Charlie Williams by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow Saratoga located in the southeast corner of Wyoming, along the banks of the Upper North Platte River, nestled between two mountain ranges, the Snowy Mountain and Sierra Madre Range. This is a great little town with a population of around 1800. They put on an amazing pool tournament. The OTBnTV crew arrived on Thursday, March 31st to get the booth set up and everything ready for the start of the events on Friday. The Platte Valley Open consists of 3 Divisions, the Sportsmen’s for local players, the Classic for Wyoming Intermediate players and the Open for everyone. The live streaming started on Friday around 6 pm and our first match was from the Sportsmen’s Division between Joe Morrison vs Chris Duke in a race to 3. Next up featured Lee Hauley and Joe Ringle also from the

Sportsmen’s Division and our final match was from the Classic Division between Jordan Thayer and Dave Riley in a race to 4. We wanted to broadcast some of the preliminary rounds in both divisions before the action in the Open Division started Saturday morning. The field of the Open Division was packed with big name players from all across the country like Charlie Williams, Raj Hundal, Rodney Morris, Mark Vidal, Glenn Atwell, Eddie Mataya, Mark Haddad and Melissa Little, just to name a few. The OTBnTV broadcast started at 2 pm with our first match between Gilbert Garcia and Heather Curby in a race to 6. Mark Haddad and Justin Reckemeyer faced off next on the TV table with Mark advancing. E J Glode (tournament director) and Raj Hundal were up on the live stream next. E J, local city councilman and tournament promoter’s match was viewed at one of the hot spots in Saratoga,

where the locals were watching the match on the TV tables at Duke’s Bar & Grill. Raj Hundal won that match. Our next match on the TV table was from the Sportmen’s Division between Dan Tewes and Jodi DeBerard. Jodi won that match in a hill-hill battle. The field was narrowing and Rodney Morris met Raj Hundal next. This was a race to 7 with Raj coming out on top 7-5. The last match of Saturday night was between Charlie Williams and Justin Reckemeyer with Charlie advancing. Rounds were starting again Sunday morning and the best of the best remained. We started the live stream around 10 am on Sunday, expecting a relatively shorter day of streaming but that was not the case. First we had Glenn Atwell and Tony Piazza, followed by Atwell and Rodney Morris which was a repeat of the 2010 finals. Glenn proved to master the table in between smoke breaks and met Raj Hundal to play for third place. FYI: We were having trouble with one of the viewers in the chat room, as we kept banning this person from the vulgarity that our audience was subjected to. Ustream was contacted through many emails throughout the weekend. Their customer service in the past was reachable by phone but no longer does this service exist. They were either incapable or chose not to address this problem. This user was hacking their system and at the time nothing could be done about it. Charlie Williams was waiting in the hot seat for his opponent to be determined. Charlie sent Glenn to the one loss side earlier in the tournament so the rematch was set. It started out a little one side with Charlie getting out to an early 5-0 lead, Glenn brought it close by taking 3 racks in a row, but Charlie prevailed with a final score of 7-4. s Platte Valley Open Williams Crowned Platte Valley Open Champion By Samm Diep, PoolTipJar.com On April 2-3, the small town of Saratoga, Wyoming, population of roughly 7,500, filled the city with pool players for their fourth annual Platte Valley Open. Locals were treated to some world class bar table 8-ball. “The tournament went fantastic! I’ve loved pool since I was five years old and I can’t get enough of it. It’s a way to get everybody together,” said tournament director E.J. Glode. In the masters division, 52 of the finest players from Wyoming and Colorado came to try their luck. The $9,000 added prize money also drew players from the as far as Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. The professional team of “The Rocket” Rodney Morris, “The Hitman” Raj Hundal, and “The Korean Dragon” Charlie Williams also made an appearance. Four players advanced from each of the original four brackets into a 16-player redraw finals board which started on Saturday night. The first round of the evening saw a finals caliber match between Morris and Hundal. Both players shot quickly and loosely with an outcome of Hundal advancing 7-5. From Denver, Tony Piazza and Rafael Ibarra both gave it a good run, finishing tied for 5th place. On the b-side, Piazza was down 5-2 against Portland, Oregan’s Glenn Atwell. The veteran bar table champion began losing his grip allowing Piazza to close the gap and take the lead. While up 6-5, a fatal scratch in the side would cost Piazza that game. At hill-hill, Atwell broke and scratched allowing Piazza another chance for the kill. Uncharacteristically, Piazza missed with ball in hand and Atwell took that match to advance. The Rocket awaited his match with the winner. Atwell would keep the momentum going against Morris and Hundal. After several failed attempts to run out, Atwell defeated Morris 7-1 and then did the same to Hundal by a score of 7-5 after being down 5-4. Williams went undefeated through the A-side and watched as Atwell took out his travel companions one at a time, shattering the pro team’s hopes of taking 1, 2, and 3. Williams, who delivered Atwell his first loss, came out strong. He quickly jumped to a 5-0 lead. Atwell had several opportunities but could not capitalize. At 5-0, Atwell made a tricky run to get on the board then proceeded to run the next two racks making it 5-3. It appeared that he was making a comeback until he missed a 9 ball in the side pocket in the following rack allowing Williams to get to the hill. The gentlemen battled over the next couple games until Williams finally
gained control in the last rack pocketing the 8 ball for the win. The final score was 7-4. Pom Rai of Fort Collins, Colorado won the Classic division and Danny Haynes from Rawlins, Wyoming took the Sportsman division. Both men came through their respective fields without losing a match. Rai came through the 64-player field to meet Denver’s Steve Thomas in the finals after Thomas lost his first match of the redraw. Haynes’ victory of the 48-player field earned him $400 while Rai pocketed $1,200. LOUIE & FERNANDEZ ON TOP AT BLACK DIAMOND By DAVID TELLER The outcome of the championship match became obvious when Seattle resident Dan Louie left himself poorly and had to carom the 4 ball off the 9 ball to keep his run alive. Though he made the shot, he sent the 9 ball to the opposite end of the table where it conveniently stopped in front of a corner pocket; the 5 ball sitting no more than eight inches way. It was a perfect angle to another carom for an early 9 ball. All his opponent, Bob Gray of Missoula, Mont., could do was sip cola and watch as Louie extended his lead in the match to 4-1. Louie continued during the championship match with Gray by putting on a near flawless shooting exhibition to win the open 9-ball tournament held at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery in Spokane, Wash. on March 26 and 27. The only victory Gray would be able to wrestle away from Louie started by pocketing a kick shot. Gray took the table after Louie’s break dropped two balls but left the object ball buried behind a cluster. After Louie’s rollout, Gray pocketed the rail-first shot and continued for a run out. Gray played a tough safety after the ensuing break. Louie took the tempo away from Gray with a counter safety and never looked back. Louie began the small, but competitive 38-player tournament with a bye through the first round and then started strong, winning 9-4 and 9-4 against his first two opponents. The first serious challenge came from Jeff Jimenez of Seattle. Louie won 9-8. The second day of the tournament Louie got another workout from Jeff Milton of Boise, Idaho. Despite a few missed shots and some speed control problems, Louie won 9-8. Meanwhile, Gray coasted to a 9-1 route in his first match Sunday morning. Louie and Gray uncharacteristically missed a few shots each in the match for the “hammer,” but put in a good performance with Louie winning 9-7. Freshly arrived in the loser’s bracket, Gray went to work. He jumped to a quick 3-0 lead against Loy Long of Seattle, but his game quickly flattened out. The left-handed Long mounted a come back and forced a rubber match. Gray held off Long’s rally to get another shot at Louie. By then a well-practiced Louie brought his pin-point precision and stingy safety game to the tournament finale and coasted to a 9-1 win. Clay Belvoir of Auburn, Wash., had the comeback performance of the tournament. He dropped his first round match against Joe Horner of Pinehurst, Idaho 9-7. Belvoir left a wide swath through the

On April 9th, 2011 the Wynkoop Brewing Company located in Denver, CO hosted its 2nd annual US qualifying spot for the upcoming US Open 10-Ball Championships to be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino located in Las Vegas, NV May 16-21, 2011. 14 players participated in this year’s qualifier and the hot-seat match was won by 15-Rack players rep Frank Urbaniak from Colorado Springs. He had victories over Jeremy Coulter 9-2, Steve Thomas 9-4, and Rueben Silva 9-8, followed by a hill-hill victory over Marc Vidal. On the loser’s side, Marc Vidal beat Bill Meacham from Colorado Springs 9-5 to have a re-match with Frank. The final was set for one race to 11 to win the qualifier and in the end it was Marc winning a close match 11-10 over Frank. A special thanks to tournament director Melissa Little and house-pro of the Wynkoop for promoting this event and hosting the LIVE streaming through USTREAM, the Wynkoop for hosting the event and adding an extra $270 to the funds for the players efforts and Samm Vidal Claramunt (Diep) for volunteering her time all weekend. One Pocket Qualifier One Pocket Qualifier , At Oscar’s Golden Fleece Billiard’s The weekend of April 16-17 brought a wave of players to Kenmore,Washington, 20 minutes north of Seattle. The location could be no other than the beautiful action joint: Oscar’s Golden Fleece. The game played in this event was the player’s favorite this time, One Pocket. 40 players competed in the CSI, US Open One Pocket qualifier. In an event where only one player, the winner, was going to qualify for the US Open One Pocket Championship $10,000 Added coming up May 12-15 in the Riviera Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas,Nevada. This was a tremendous turnout that made for a successful open One-pocket tournament to find out who’s who in the Northwest in one of the most skill demanding disciplines in the game today. The tournament saw a variety of players from Tacoma (south of Seattle), Oregon, Canada, Spain,and California. Also some of the strongest local talents were in attendance, including legendary gamblers and road agents that still keep their games sharp to this day, Randy Camantigue from Washington and One Pocket Hall of Famer Mr. Harry Platis. On the same note, Steve Graham “Buster”, another local and regular in the Golden Fleece Billiard Club, defeated Miguel Morfin. Ed Hobbs from Tacoma had a great run winning all 4 of his matches on Saturday, including dominating wins over Jeff Jimenez, Junior T from Bremerton, and always-tough Paul Marquez from Oregon. The upsets came to be even bigger by Clay K, a local old-timer who after losing to Dave B went on to tear the loser’s side taking down no other than legendary road player Bill Cress, Joe Chung and Eddie Mataya.

Early favorite, local John Doherty , Dave B’s opposition on Saturday went hill-hill. Another notable through the entire event was Tommy, who was derailed to the loser’s side by Marc Vidal on Saturday in a close hill-hill decision. Local favorite Dennis had a good run coming into the loser’s side on Sunday. Marc Vidal went through the 1st day with dominating performances over locals Neil, Dennis and Mataya from Tacoma. Day 2 started with JD making quick work of Ed Hobbs and Marc Vidal over Tommy, both winner’s side matches. In the loser’s side Clay ended his run in glory, when he stepped in Paul Marquez’s way.

The point match(hot-seat match) was a nailbitter between JD and Marc Vidal, that was decided in the last 2 balls with the score at 2 games a piece, in the race to 3. Although at the end JD’s experience and expertise prevailed all the way to the final. Tommy was looking for revenge and he almost got what he wanted. Again, taking the match hill-hill, but Marc Vidal ran out to win. I know that I need to work on practicing other areas of my game (e.g. safeties, kicks, banks, Melissa Little etc), and I wanted to know about your practice schedule. How often do you practice, for how long, how much attention do you give to safeties, kicks, banks, etc., and do you recommend any specific drills that you would recommend? Hope to talk to you soon! Answer:
Aimee, thanks for the great question!! For kicks, combos, banks and safeties I do practice drills by setting up those particular shots and shoot them till I feel like I can see and feel them. When I play alone, I play the game I invented called “15-Rack” but for 45-racks per session- it’s a lot but it helps me focus when I cannot play with someone else. And sometimes I will even do make-up matches with my 15-Rack league players. 15-Rack is playing 10-ball the ghost in a modified statistical scoring way for a total of 15-Racks per session. This game really helps me figure out what I am doing wrong so I can fix and improve on my weaknesses. Otherwise, I schedule in different workout partner each week to get the total workout package. I sometimes play 1-pocket with the players around town who like to play the game, and I’ll even drive to Hank’s and play Mailman George some 3-cushion billiards at least once per month. Divide and Conquer! By Samm Diep © May 2011
In science, the “divide and conquer” algorithm refers to breaking down a problem into more manageable smaller problems until they become simple enough to solve directly. This same concept can be applied to understanding our pool game and conquering those errors during competition. With nationals just around the corner, who couldn’t use a little help in conquering those errors? How many times have you been in Samm Diep a match where it seemed like nothing was going right for you? No matter what you did, it wasn’t working. It can often feel overwhelming when that happens. You make one little mistake and the next thing you know all the errors start snowballing. When you look back on that match, you might be able to pinpoint one or two specific things that resulted in your downward spiral. If only you could identify it when it starts happening... You couldn’t because all the combined errors clouded the real reason you weren’t getting out. You were looking at the big problem instead of dividing it into smaller ones that you could attack. Here’s a perfect example: You lost your match because you missed too many key shots. You missed those shots because you were too tentative and did not deliver a confident stroke. Without confidence you weren’t following through. You didn’t follow through because in the very first rack of the match you over-stroked a draw shot and hooked yourself. Now, instead of adjusting to the table, you’ve managed to make a mountain of a loss out of the molehill of the table speed. If only you were able to recognize what was happening while it was happening. My personal biggest weakness is when the balls are really dirty. As soon as I’d over-spin that first shot, it would ultimately make me so uncomfortable, it would cause me to jump up or misaim. When you’re not comfortable, it’s difficult to stay down. You just want the shot to be over with. My point is that if you’re able to break down the equation and quickly identify the problem, it makes it much easier to conquer it. Sometimes confidence can win as many matches as skill. If you can’t figure out what’s causing you to feel uncomfortable, you’ll never be able to feel confident. When a match takes a turn for the worse, break it down and conquer it! Figure out what’s happening and regain your confidence. Sometimes you can’t do that and you have to push some facet of your game to its limits. To prepare for such situations, you need to spend part of your practice time on shots that are at the limit of you abilities. That might be tough cuts or power shots, but this month we’re going to work on extreme Bob Jewett kick shots. In the diagram are three kick shots in which the goal is to pocket the one ball. Each shot also has a blocker ball that you have to avoid. (If necessary, imagine that there are other balls on the table and this is the best way to hit the ball you need to hit first.) For the shot with the 6 ball, the idea is that you are shooting straight across the table and need to get to the corner. This is a fairly common kicking situation and it’s important to learn about how much angle you can get with side spin. Tables vary widely, both in the quality of the cushions and in the stickiness of the cloth and balls. A shot that works perfectly on 9-foot table with new Simonis cloth may be a disaster on a 7-foot table with old rubber and cloth that was last changed in the last millennium. On most tables the shot can be made as shown, with the cue ball about 3 diamonds from the corner. This is a simple shot to try during practice and it will give a quick read on the conditions. There are several things you can do to get more angle off the cushion. Use a little draw along with the side spin, and don’t shoot too hard. The idea is that the draw will slow the ball down on the way to the cushion but all of the side spin will remain and will give you more angle. STROKE DISCIPLINE (reprinted from July Issue 2003)
This month’s Artistic Shot is from the Stroke Discipline. This shot is named Stroke Around The Rack. This shot has a Degree of Difficulty (D.O.D.) of 7. Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up you must first put the rack in its normal or standard position for racking making sure the rack is straight. Next place the edge of the cue ball closest to the foot Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth cushion even with the back of the rack and two ball’s width from the point of the rack. The next step is to place two object balls, (between cue ball and A ball), plus A ball and cue ball are all frozen in a straight line to pocket A. The F ball is centered between the pocket points. The objective of the shot is to shoot the cue ball into three balls, trying to go through the resistance of them,
sending A ball to pocket A. The cue ball goes out past the rack and makes a curving draw to pocket ball F as pocket letter designated. A and F ball must be made. Here are some special notes. A scratch is allowed. The cue ball may hit an extra cushion by F ball. The two object balls between the cue ball and A ball do not have to be made. The cue ball may not touch the rack before F ball is made, but can after F ball is made. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. This stroke shot requires a very good follow through, not with power but with a fluid stroke. I use low right English and cue the cue ball at about 4:30. Aim the center of your shaft from where you’re applying English to about ½ diamond segment to the left of pocket A. Try to keep the cue as level to the plane of the table as possible. If the cue ball is squirting to the left too quickly and hitting the rack then you are aiming too far to the left of pocket A. If the cue ball is going straight with the line of three balls you will need to aim further to the left. This stroke shot is a unique blend of speed and spin. Good luck to everyone.

Kathy came back after beating Kasia Wilcox, who had been sent down by Patty earlier. Patty and Kathi battled again with Patty staying focused on her game and pulling out the win. Lucky: We arrived in Lincoln City, Oregon on a sunny day, which, for March, was pretty lucky. And Lucky was excited to be out of the desert and at the beach. He said he’d already heard a lot about this Western BCA tournament from a friend who also was attending, and he’d been waiting to feel good enough to check it out. I got him settled in his room – he always has to hang up all his shirts and line up his boots in the closet -- and then brought him over to the casino. I’ve been there so many times, I see people I know before I even get in the door. I stopped to say hi to some of the Seattle players, but when I turned to introduce Lucky to them, he was nowhere to be found. I made my way on upstairs and there he was – said he’d come up the back way to avoid the smokers. How he knew that I don’t know… probably me telling him stories from the past. Anyway, I took him inside the event room, and he was actually taken aback. “I’ve seen a lot of pool tournaments,” he said, “but this is huge for a local amateur event. This looks like a lot of fun!” Well, he was right. 1,200 plus players and the biggest in the country? Yeah, it’s fun. I had to go check in at the podium, since I was scheduled to work the event, and last I saw Lucky he was wandering off down the room. I stopped by his room later that night to see what he had to eat and find out what he’d been up to all day. He said after we parted ways he walked up and down the aisles for a while and marveled at all the young players and remembered those good old days, and then he thought he saw someone from his past-- “Donald Duck.” I knew he meant Don Wirtaman, so after I grabbed a deli sandwich out of Lucky’s fridge, I settled in to hear his story. He said he stopped at the table where Don was practicing, and when Don finally noticed him, he said his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and he dumped his cue on the table, scattering all the balls around, and came over to greet Lucky with a slap on the back and a long hand shake, saying, “You son of a gun! Where you been all these years?” Lucky said they were both acting like it was like a high school reunion or something. Come to find out they first ran into each other when Wirtaman was an 18-year old kid thinking he could take on Lucky. He said the way Don told it he beat Lucky out of a bunch of dough. Lucky laughed and said Don had a little bit of amnesia about that. He almost choked on his food, he was guffawing so hard. “Yeah,” he barely could get it out, “He won a whole fifty… fifty… fifty cents!” He said Don couldn’t beat him playing pool so he tried switching to flipping coins. I guess you just have to decide for yourself what really happened. They reminisced about some of the old days, remembering Old Man Everett and Don Watson, two great Northwest pool players they both had come up against and who were almost as tough as Jimmy Caras ever was. Lucky said Everett used to give Willie Mosconi fits. Everett beat him at 9-ball and 1-pocket and because Mosconi couldn’t dominate, he’d duck him, a story only a few ever knew. Lucky remembers watching fortysome years ago when Portland Don Watson and Bucktooth matched up at Cochran’s in ‘Frisco. Bucktooth asked Watson to play 9-ball, and with all the side bets, over a $100 a game was on the line, a chunk of change back in the 70’s. Anyway,

Lucky said Watson stepped up and ran eight racks in a row and looked like he could run eight more, or just never miss. He said Bucktooth’s friend and backer stood up and said it was time to go home and Bucktooth turned all red in the face, and stuttering a little bit, said, “No! I haven’t got to shoot yet! Wait ‘til, ‘til it’s my turn!” Bucky’s friend said, “Ah… Yeah, that’s why we’re leaving… now.” Don told Lucky he was invited to play in this Western BCA Grand Master Challenge and would be in a match a little later on. So Lucky said well, you better keep practicing then, but Don said he wasn’t going to get any better in the next half hour, so he packed up his gear and took Lucky over to check it out. My ears perked up and I said to Lucky, didn’t you see that whole thing was on live streaming and Lucky said, yeah, but he found seats off camera. I knew he never liked getting his picture taken. Anyway, he said there was some young kid attracting a lot of attention in another match over there, and I knew he was talking about Chris Byers. Lucky said they sat down and immediately he started hearing a lot of whispered comments from the spectators, young and old. “It was really something,” Lucky said. “Here was this young kid playing some crazy pool and people’s jaws were just dropping everywhere. You don’t see that every day.” Lucky said he looked composed for someone so young but at one point he missed a shot and showed his disgust. I said, “Well, he’s only 16. He’s bound to blow up a little!” Lucky said “Well, he reminds me of me at that age. He’s a competitor. When I was twelve, I was playing this guy my father knew from Mississippi, gambling with Pop’s money. I’d run out, then he would run out. It went on for a while like that and then I got frustrated that he kept firing back at me. I tried to insult him. I swung my stick in the air. I stomped my Pop’s cue on the floor. I kicked the chair. My Pop taught me a serious lesson that day. He yanked me aside. He pulled a little hand mirror out of his jacket pocket and shoved it in my face and he said, ‘Look! Who are you? Are you a decent human being or are you this guy?’ He said I needed to regain and keep inner control or he was going to pull me out of the game and that would be the end of it for all time. The guy I was playing was watching and was amused, and I was filled with shame. I’ll never forget it and I never lost my composure or my true self again.” We were quiet for a while after that. Lucky was in a dream state, staring out the window at the ocean, looking a little disconnected… with some look on his face like I’d never seen before. Then he said in a soft voice, “I truly hope that kid will stay in school and graduate. You need much more in this world than to be great at one thing.” Then the news on TV took over and the spell was broken. There was a huge earthquake in Japan and in several hours we might be in for a tsunami right outside just feet from where we were sitting! For the rest of that night we were hearing all kinds of rumors. We even saw people right there on our floor pack up all their stuff and leave in the middle of the night! People were running back and forth with new reports of what

was supposed to happen. Everyone was glued to their computers or their tv’s or their cell phones. Players’ families were calling them all night long, and the team event that was supposed to start the next morning was looking like it might be a disaster zone worse that the emergency shelters that were going up at the local high school. I was imagining people sleeping on the pool tables. Most of the casino staff went home to be with their families. Finally, Lucky and I and my wife Sassy decided to stick it out on the hotel’s 3rd floor, but we were awake all night. The tsunami did hit in the early dawn hours, but it was nothing more than a fast low tide and a fast high tide, and then poof, it was gone, but its memory and the awareness of what it caused across the ocean was raw in everyone’s minds. After the event, where Dan Louie won the Grand Masters Challenge and Josie Leroy the Women’s Masters, we heard solemn news of a fallen pool player, Leo Newberry. We went to his service to pay our respects, although Lucky sat in the back by himself. I guess he gets kind of choked up about stuff like that. But about Leo, he was one of a crop of teenage prodigies of 70’s and created a huge reputation for himself throughout the years around the Northwest, California and Arizona. To those who knew him well, he had a big heart, but his competitors saw him a little differently. Lucky recalled watching a $20 ring game in California in the late 70’s or early 80’s where some of the best players around -- Mike Sigel, Paul Brienza, Dave Piona and Richy Ambrose -- were going at it. Leo started out with a five-pack and a couple games later put another on another 5-pack. He won a bunch of games in between everyone else and topped that with a 6-pack, which busted up the game. Leo got all the money. When he was in gear he was absolutely fearless. He once said the only secret to 9-ball is to never miss the 9. When he was thirteen years old, hanging out at the pool hall and skipping school, the vice principal came in and told him that he was going to suspend him if he didn’t get back to school right now and Leo said, “Well, sir, you don’t understand that I don’t want to go to school. I’m a pool player.” Anyway, after Leo’s funeral, I kissed the wife goodbye and Lucky and I headed up to a mountain ranch in the Cascades to chill for a while. Lucky had made it through a lot of social stuff and was pretty worn down and tired. We’ve been up here almost a week now, and I’m sitting here looking at it snow. I’ve gotten away from writing some, since the owner here has a really nice table and a bunch of good pool videos. This has been a great opportunity to buckle down and put in some serious practice time, but we’re planning on heading out again tomorrow or the next day. Lucky has a route all mapped out, and eventually we’ll land in Vegas and for one thing check out the Pro 9-ball tournament at the Riv. Last night we were talking about it, and Lucky said he might have to disguise himself. I said it didn’t look like it was going to be a problem since no one had recognized him so far. He threw me kind of a funny look, and said, “We’ll see, we’ll see.” Makes me wonder what he has up his sleeve. I know it’s going to be very interesting, whatever it is.

On April 8, 9 & 10th the 9th annual Wormo’s Rack’em & Crack’em 8-ball tournament was held at The Pocket in Twin Falls, Idaho. The tournament was run by Jody “Rooster”DeRoest of Boise Idaho. The Pocket added $1000.00 to the event and over the next 3 days players totaling 111 entries competed for prize money totaling over $7500.00. Players played on 5 Diamond Smart Tables and 7 Valley tables covered with Simonis tournament blue cloth and Aramith pro balls with red circle cue balls The weekend competition started Friday night with a 9-ball warm-up tournament. 1st place women’s 9-ball was taken by Tara Vreeland of Boise Idaho. Cheryl Wilson of Boise Idaho took second and Janis Ogawa also from Boise placed 3rd. 1st place men’s 9-ball was taken by Jeff (J.R.) Melton, out of Oklahoma. Tommy Baker of Utah takes 2nd, followed by Danny Stratton of Oklahoma for 3rd and Oscar Guerro of Boise Idaho finished 4th. 5/6 finishers were Richard Chavez of Blackfoot Idaho and Eric Tate of Ontario Oregon. 7/8 finishers were Kings Santy of Boise Idaho and Steve Ewuniuk of Twin Falls Idaho. Saturday’s 8-ball tournament brought a lot of good players to the tables. Competition was tough and fun to watch. The races were to 5 in both brackets. 1st place in women’s 8-ball was Holly Ross of Jerome Idaho. Heidi Phipps of Boise takes 2nd, followed by 3rd place finisher Cheryl Wilson of Fruitland Idaho and 4th place finisher was Jennifer Acker of Boise Idaho. The men played most of the day to get to the top 4 which were brought back on Sunday to begin fresh. After several matches the tournament ended with the winner of the 9th annual Wormo’s Rack’em & Crack’em being Kings Santy of Boise Idaho. He had to beat Jeff (J.R.) Melton of Okalhoma twice to secure the win. Jeff had to settle for 2nd but still
took a big chunk of money with him. Third place was taken by Shane Shoemaker of Pocatello Idaho, followed by Jody DeRoest of Boise for 4th place. 5/6 places were taken by Eric Tate of Ontario Oregon and Josh Smith of Boise Idaho. 7/8 places were taken by Bruno Oake from Meridian Idaho and Ace Brown of Utah. Wormo was on hand to hand out the winnings and a much appreciated hand shake. Without the players this tournament wouldn’t be a good as it is. Thank you all for coming again to The Womo’s Rack’em & Crack’em tournament. We look forward to seeing you again next year for our 10th Anniversary Wormo’s Rack’em & Crack’em 8 ball tournament. Mona Remedios Wins Martha Hartsell Memorial Story and Photo By Suzanne Smith The Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon hosted the NWPA’s second tour stop of 2011, the 1st Annual Martha Hartsell Memorial, on April 16-17th. Billiards 911 donated a cue for raffle and all proceeds were dedicated to The Shriner in Martha’s name. Rail2Rail Productions provided streaming for the event and several new players joined in for the action. Kathi Giles from Ryderwood, WA, Nadia Fay, Diane Krause, and Coryn Walker from Oregon played in this event and all plan on playing more events in the future. The Cue Ball has been open since 1963 and has so much character that all of players on the NWPA look forward to traveling to visit every April. This is the 11th year that they have hosted a stop and the room houses 22 9 foot Brunswick Centennial and Anniversaries, 1 oversized 8 foot Brunswick, 2 5X10 Brunswick Snooker tables, and one Chevillotte 3 cushion table. The room is open 7 days a week and all ages are welcome. The Cue Ball was generous enough to give the green fees back to the NWPA and with 34 ladies; they added $750 to the prize fund. We would also like to thank Mueller for becoming our title sponsor in 2011. Saturday night festivities included heading over to Jake’s for Ribeyes and their weekly tournament, and then on to Jammers for karaoke and dancing. Play started with 34 ladies on Saturday morning. Race to 7 on the A side and race to 6 on the B side made for an action packed weekend. On Sunday, only eight ladies remained in the main event. Surprisingly, Liz Cole and Kim Jones (1st and 2nd from our first stop) had been eliminated on Saturday, so no chance of their repeat performance. On the A side, Deby Welfringer vs. Andrea Saenz Maes and Mona Remedios vs. Mikki Small. Deby and Mona defeated their opponents 7-3 and 7-2 to square off for the hot seat, which Deby won in a hill-hill battle. Mona eagerly waited to see who her opponent would be from the B side
to try and earn a chance at redemption. On the B side, Shelby Locati vs. Eve Stockstill and Alisha Rogers vs. Kimberly Kirk. Shelby and Kimberly defeated their opponents 6-4 and 6-2 to advance to the next round. Andrea defeated Shelby 7-5 and Mikki defeated Kimberly 6-2 to square off for 4th place. Andrea defeated Mikki 6-5 to advance to the B side final against Mona. Mona shot extremely well during the match and defeated Andrea 6-2. The finals were set, one race to 9, alternating break: Deby Welfringer vs. Mona Remedios. The final would prove to be a battle to the very end, with Mona Remedios prevailing 9-8 over Deby. Score was tied at 0-0, 1-1, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, and 8-8. Deby led the match 6-5, but Mona would then take games 12, 13, and 14 to reach the hill first. Deby then showed nerves of steel as she ran out game 15 after Mona scratched on the break and then drilling a

9 ball bank in game 16 to tie things up at 8 games apiece. Fortunately for Mona, she had won the lag, for the final game ended up being the only game of the entire match that was won from the break. Mona broke and pocketed the 7 ball, leaving a 1-9 combination in the corner. Although she missed the shot initially, the 1 caromed off of the 5 shooting the 9 straight into the corner for the win. Mona has made an amazing return to the NWPA. In 2006 after two severe accidents, Mona was told she would never be able to play pool again. Knowing that her love of the game was strong, she fired her physiotherapist and began a recovery process that took 5 years. When I spoke with Mona about her journey, it moved me to see the passion that prevented her from giving up on a game that she loved so much. Congratulations and welcome back Mona. Dan Louie Tops Field With neither displaying any signs of diminished skills, both Dan Louie (Seattle, WA) and Glenn Atwell (Salem, OR) marched to the A-side semifinals, where Louie vanquished Atwell 9-3, while Bobby Zack (Portland, OR) overcame Damian Pongpanik 9-7. Louie continued his dominance in the A-side finals to eclipse Zack by a 9-3 margin to gain the hot seat. On the B-side Ivan Doty (Longview, WA) relegated Kenny Dodd (Hillsboro, OR) to 7th place, 9-3, where Dodd was joined by Matt Horner (Salem, OR), who fell to the cue of Zac Masiby (Vancouver, WA) 9-4. In turn both Doty and Masiby were eliminated in the next round by Glenn Atwell 9-5 and Damian Pongpanik 9-5 respectively. Atwell kept his hot hand, out stroking Damian Pongpanik at 4th place by a 9-7 margin and Bobby Zack in the B-side finals by a 9-2 score. A claasic tourney finals emerged with a one-set, race to 11, and Dan Louie kept control to protect his winning ways for the weekend with a 11-6 victory to claim the weekend’s title. The Pool Players Memorial 9-Ball Tournament was hosted in Portland, OR, April 8-10, 2011 at the Nite Hawk Lounge. The $1,500 added event featured a full 48-player field in a double-elimination, handicapped 9-ball format on 8-foot Valley bar boxes. This event annually draws the top players throughout the northwest United States, and legends such as Stan Tourangeau, Dan Louie, Rich Geiler and Glenn Atwell definitely came out for this one!
211 Quarterly Event
This year’s Behind The Rock Tour’s 211 First Quarterly Event broke some barriers! For the first time, the tournament was played in two different locations at the same time; Malarkey’s in Tacoma and Black Diamond Billiards in Spokane. This game is structured to do just that which invites more players and allows bigger prize payouts and more competition. In the first quarter we paid out $2,395.00 to our weekly tournaments and our quarterly event turned into a state-wide competition for a purse of $1,000! That’s a total $3,395.00 paid out to the players in the first quarter. The top third of the field enjoyed payouts each week as well as at the quarterly event. So what happened at the quarterly event? This 211 tournament is structured into three stages: First Round Play, Sudden Death, and the Finals. Everyone plays two matches in the First Round with only their highest score establishing their position. The two top players in the First Round Play automatically advance to the Finals while the remaining have to work their way into the Finals. The lowest two scores are automatically eliminated and the remainder move to the Sudden Death Stage. This is an all or nothing round where each player plays one match to decide if they will be in the top half of the players to move to the Final Stage. In the Final Stage, participating players get two matches to establish a winning score. Bill Anglin, one of three competitors from the Spokane room, started things off with a wicked final score of 179 that cleared the rest of the field by a huge margin

in the First Round. Pete Gonzales stroked his way to a personal best to nail down a second position in the First Round. Sadly, three players missed the cut to get to the Sudden Death Round, but that’s how this game is played! In the Sudden Death Round, Eric Sawyer led the ten player field with a fantastic total score of almost 172. Players McCrory, Francisco, Gonzales, Gwinn, and Eberly made scores that pushed them into the Finals. Five more players fell by the wayside. It was Larry Francisco who soared over the Finals pack with a great number of nearly 170. He was followed by Justin McCrory, Eric Sawyer, Bill Anglin, and Pete Gonzales for payout positions. For their efforts, Francisco took home $480, McCrory $240, Sawyer $120, Anglin $90, and Gonzales $70. It was terrific that other pool rooms were able to join in the action this time from a remote location. The tournament included players from the Golden Fleece in Kenmore that made their way to Tacoma’s Malarkey’s Room to play and Black Diamond Billiards in Spokane. as food for the players. Sign-ups started at 3 pm Friday for those who had not qualified and wanted to “buy-in” to the tournament. The tournament started at 7 pm Friday night and everyone played once. Everyone would return at 9 am for the start of play on Saturday.
OTBnTV broadcast a few matches on Friday night and immediately noticed that there was a flow of traffic directly in front of the LIVE Streaming booth, which made it a little difficult to always have a view of the pool tables that our audience of over 30,000 could enjoy. It took some creative camera switches to keep the players out of the way of the camera lens. By Sunday, the area was roped off and there was very little interference that way.

By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow OTBnTV rolled into Billings, Montana a day earlier than last year for the 31st Annual Montana Coin Machine Operators Association (MCMOA) 8-Ball Championships after a grueling schedule of Live streaming, magazine deadlines and live streaming again. We were really excited about the new venue. This year the event was being held in a larger facility and we were curious to see what the venue looked like. It was huge! There was easily enough room for 80 tables but this event only need 40. Each row of pool tables was spaced 20’ apart so there were rows of tables and seating for the participants and their families. Plenty of room, as opposed to previous years where the event was crowded or divided up into different rooms. This was going to be great. The first players started to arrive early on Friday to check out the new facility. Everyone remarked at how large the room was. It was as long as a football field and about as wide. For pool players who had played in cramped conditions, close proximity and waiting for room to shoot or finding a place to put their cue cases down, this was soon to become the favorite location. Need I remind you of Livingston in the parking garage, or the fair grounds in Great Falls. We, the pool players, were treated to a spacious, unencumbered location that allowed the us to go about what is most important, playing the game. There was a strong field of about 350 pool players in attendance for a weekend of pool. The MCMOA also provided bars centrally located around the room as well

Saturday brought some great matches to the TV Table and all throughout the event. There were past champions who were knocked out early and players who were previously unheard of winning match after match. The tournament was full of surprises. Saturday all the matches were a brutal race to 3 and a race to 5 on Sunday in the finals bracket. On the one-loss side of the A Division, last year’s champion Dan Hamper waited while Jeff Boucher, a former champion and friend, finished his match on another table. The talk was we would have both men on the TV Table for the next match. To everyone’s surprise Jeff lost his match and Dan met B J Goodwin. Four games later Dan was knocked out of the tournament. The field was narrowing. Play continued until each division had the number of players that would return on Sunday. The brackets were redrawn Saturday

night around 7:30 pm, after play ended and the race to 5 final brackets were to begin at 9 am Sunday. A question was proposed, would players like to start the final bracket after the redraw? This has long ben a controversy. Why stop so early on Saturday? OTBnTV started streaming at 10 am and continued to the end of the tournament around 10 pm. What a day for matches. All day long we had great match-ups with former champions, Dave Willis, Nick Douma and Terry Bummer to name a few, and players who finished in the money every year. Most of our LIVE matches were of A Division players, but a break in the action gave an opportunity for Jon Kaphammer and Mark Strandberg to play their semifinal B Division match. Mark went on to take second in the tournament and Spencer Marsh won the B Division Championship. Unfortunately for the live streaming audience, a few tables away out of camera shot, the Women’s A Division title was being played. Sky Tigart and Janet Dunks, both former MCMOA champions were fighting it out. The biggest surprise in the Women’s A Division was that Linda Asleson, last year’s champion and 5 time winner of this event, was knocked out and playing in the Second Chance tournament. Janet took first place, Sky second and Mary Garcia who said she hadn’t been playing for about a year, took third. The Women’s B Finals and the Men’s A Finals were the last
Carey Ziebarth divisions to finish up. Once again the ladies were out of camera range but Krystal Kindred (cover) placed first, Erica Wise, second and Ashley Drabbels third. The Men’s A Semi-Final match was between Terry Bummer and Nick Douma, both former champions. Terry advanced to the finals to face Carey Ziebarth who was waiting in the hot seat. Terry would have to beat Carey twice to take the tournament. Terry won and the match would go to a second set. By the time the second set started, someone on the control desk remarked that Terry had been playing an incredible 9 hours straight. Both men were taking their wives to an Elton John concert held in Billings, but by the end of the first set, the concert had already started and by the end of the second

As a good many pool enthusiast already know, mid-March means players make their way to Libby, MT to test their skills, visit friends from all over and take their shot at a piece of the prize money. Ninety-five men and thirty-six women from near and far gathered for the shootout. The caliber of players that made the trip was well above average, with former winners in both the men’s and women’s division along with several who have cashed in the past. Mini-tournaments ran Friday night at the V.F.W. Post 1548. Unfortunately the results have been misplaced. Play in the main event got underway Saturday morning as the tournament was flighted in both divisions this year. The top eight men and top four women from their respective flights qualified for Sunday’s Grand Finale. Sunday’s play was a race to five, double elimination contest. Sixteen men and eight women started the day. The top eight men received prize money as well as the top four women. WOMEN’S RESULTS: 1st $535 Phyllis Fernandez (Spokane, WA) $760 side pot 2nd $401 Cheryl Rosean (Kalispell, MT) $456 3rd $270 Patty Dunning ( Libby, MT) $304 4th $133 Char Samuels (Nez Pelam, WA) Other women to qualify for Sunday were as follows: Dorothy Nash (Lewiston, ID), Tina Teesatuskie (Wellpeit, WA), Darlene Freedman (Spokane, WA), Ashley Burke (Sandpoint, ID) The sixteen men that qualified for Sunday’s play showed up ready to do battle. The shocker of the first round was seeing Jeff Boucher booted to the losers bracket 5-2 at the hands of Joe Gilliland, who stroked his way to a respectful 7th and 8th place finish. Wayne Hill, formerly of Libby, now of Kalispell and Johnnie Karr of Post Falls, ID were in control of the winners bracket, with strong wins 5-3, 5-2, 5-2, and 5-1, 5-2, 5-3 respectfully. They faced-off for the cat-bird seat with Wayne coming out on top 5-2. Meanwhile there was plenty of solid play going on on the one loss side. Coby Jaap put four strong matches together to stroke his way to a fourth place finish. Patrick Ferryman was booted to the one loss side in his second match 5-4 by Sonny Redthunder, but then put it together coming through the losers bracket to

Championship match Wayne Hill against Patrick 5-1. Patrick’s only win coming from running rack #4. Patrick was once again bitten by the seven ball on more than one occasion in the match. Simply put Wayne played stellar. I personally kept looking around for Kerry Resch as I had flash backs of the last time I saw Wayne play this strong. Doc’s Tavern BCA League from: Don & Jenny Sheldon 2011 Lower Columbia Peninsula Division BCA Annual 8-Ball Pool Tournament Doc’s Tavern hosted the BCA Annual Pool Tournament February 25-27, 2011. Thirty-two BCA qualified players from Oregon and Washington signed up to play in the $1,000 tournament. The players were divided into groups of 8 by known ability then each match was handicapped to make the competition as equal as possible. Group A included four past champions, Mark Larson, Curtis Bade, Bill Herman and Tom Myer. Bill Herman beat Curtis Bade 5 to 3, Jim Mortensen beat Pat Ryan 5 to 4, Tom Myer made a come back to defeat Eddie Lau 5 to 4 and Mark Larson beat Don Sheldon 5 to 4 by taking the last two games. Group 2 included favorites Dwain Schultz, Woody Phillips and Jack Rubins. Davie Berkman beat Dwain Schultz 5 to 4, Bob Hunt defeated Woody Phillips, Jack Rubino beat Jim Harrison 5 to 4, and Robert (Bubba) Reed eked by Richard Davis 5 to 4.

Group 4 consisted of seasoned beterans and pool hall junkies. These people love their pool. Tina Nelson beat Jim Vanek, then Ron Kraus out lasted Vidkie Beamguard. Earl (the squirrel) Ransom beat Tina Wiegardt, the Don Michaud pounded Bonnie Danel. Each year Doc’s puts on this tournament to get the players ready for the greuling regional event held by the WBCA. The tournament is a double elimination race to five format which means to win a match 5 games must be won.

Tom Ross Fundraiser Where Pool is Cool “Cueing Folks with Strokes” Benefit Pool Tournament presented by Melissa Little and the Wynkoop Brewing Company: On Saturday, July 9th, 2011, a pool tournament will be held at the Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado to benefit Tom Ross and the Boulder Community Hospital’s In-Patient Rehab Center. The event will feature a grand prize of a 9-foot Murray Californian Table donated by Ross himself. There will also be a silent auction, challenge the pro matches with Tom and friends, an awareness campaign featuring professionals from the BCH staff, and Melissa will be honoring pool players who have suffered from strokes/brain injuries. This hopes to be the first of many events to benefit the new organization, Cuing Folks With Strokes, founded by Melissa Little, house pro at the Wynkoop. Welcome to The Pocket, where pool is cool and so are you. Shelly (me) and Carl “Wormo” Wormsbaker invite you and your friends to come enjoy a game or two of pool. We have been here since 2002 although The Pocket has been around since the 70’s. We are probably the closest thing to a Mom/Pop sort of pool house even though you have to be 21 to enter. I have a lot of “kids” that even call me Mom! I’ve even been known to lovingly scold my “kids” if they get too unruly or I catch them smoking over the pool tables. We have 12-7 foot newly covered tables to choose from and even a 10 foot snooker table. Recently we purchased 48 new scorpion one piece cues for your playing pleasure. Here at The Pocket, we believe you, the customer comes first. We want you to have a great time with us. We strive to provide a clean, fun place to come and kick back. Trouble makers need not apply. We are always trying to come up with fun events or specials to make your time with us memorable. This year we are going to be the official Boise Hawks fan base in Twin Falls. Fun bus rides with tickets to purchase to Hawks home games are on the agenda. We run lunch specials Monday thru Friday from 11 am till 2 pm where you can get a great deal on some delicious food plus get to play pool for free. A few hours after the Lunch specials are over; happy hour kicks in when you can get $1 off Pitchers and well drinks. Monday night is Men’s night. Come in and find out how you guys can get free pool. Tuesday is a very Special Day and Night. Tuesday we have an in-house special of 50 cent tacos and $2 Coronas all day long. It is also our Ladies night. Come in ladies and ask how you get free pool. Wednesday is kind of wacky. We are going to hold random drawings in the summer months for door prizes starting at happy hour. Wednesday night is also the weekly handicapped 8-ball tournament starting at 7 p.m. You can sign up by 6:30 the night of play. It is a fun tournament that only cost $6.00 a person. The field is limited to the first 20 players due to time constraints. Any Wednesday tournament with 16 or more players, The Pocket will add money to the tournament. Friday and Saturday nights are fun busy nights. Get here early to get a table. The internet jukebox is usually playing non-stop. Saturday afternoons we are going to do weekly tournaments for you players starting at 1pm. Sign up start at 11 a.m. and tables will open for practice. The 1st Saturday of each month will be a mixed doubles tournament. The cost will be $10 per couple and a $5 green fee. The 2nd Saturday of the month will be a women only 8-ball tournament. The cost is $10 per player and a $5 green fee. The 3rd Saturday of the month will be a No Big Dogs tournament. The fees are $10 per player and $5 greens fee. The 4th Saturday of the month will be an Open 8-ball. The fee is $20 and $5 greens fee so come on you Big Dogs let’s play some pool. The occasional 5th Saturday of a month will be a Women’s Big Dog Tournament for $20 and $5 greens fee. For you seniors 55 and older, we will have a Sunday Tournament at 1 pm for $5. We like to give back when we can. I am always willing to donate table time for a worthy charity or fund raiser. So come see me if you have a worthy fund raiser or benefit that you’d like us to host tables for it. Carl is the league operator here for the BCA player’s league and we average about 18-20 traveling teams. It is a lot of fun. We’ve even had local teams go compete in the BCA Nationals in Las Vegas. Come share a joke and a laugh with one of our staff. And believe me they like a good laugh and you’re apt to get a good laugh too. Come say hi to Henry, Troy, Ashley, Sheri, Tonya or Stacie and let them take care of you. I will personally be your cook Monday thru Friday and Coleen will make sure you are taken care of as well. We are always glad to offer a smile and a light of your smoke. Yes, smoking is still allowed in bars in Idaho for the time being but we have 4 smoke-eaters to scrub the air to keep it as comfortable as possible. You, the customers, make The Pocket great. RELAY FOR LIFE FUNDRAISER Alright, so this week they stepped out of the box just a little here at Toadstool. Dave and Suzanne hosted a Relay for Life Poker Tournament fundraiser event put together by team We Care. With over 30 players this was a fun event. The evening started with a buffet style dinner of slider sandwiches, chili, and cheeses served up from the Toadstool kitchen. Players paid a $35.00 entry fee, which included dinner and drinks, for a chance to win one of the top three prizes. Action was fast as this was a re-buy tournament, players began with $1,500.00 in chips and re-bought for $5.00 and had an add-on at the break for $10.00 more. Players fell to larger chip stacks and better cards after the break as the field was narrowed to the final table of 7, including Toadstool owners Dave and Suzanne Mackey. As cards were dealt Dave and Suzanne found themselves in a hand with all her chips at risk…..Dave had the better hand and Suzanne moved to the rail…Dave slept on the couch later I am sure. As the field was narrowed to the final 3 players Mike Stromberg fell to Dave Leary, which lead to heads up match with Dave Mackey. Just a few hands later Leary put Mackey all in to win the tournament. I must say at this point Dave Leary came back from a forced all in small blind with an absolutely brilliant play on a Jack Three off suit, poker genius I say…. So first place of $125.00 went to Dave Leary, who donated it back to the charity, Thank-you Dave. Second place of $75.00 went to Dave Mackey, who slept alone…..

Grand Masters Explained
The WBCA Grand Master Event from: Mike Jensen Competition Committee Chair
We came up with the idea for the Grand Master event for a couple of reasons, one was to showcase the best players in the Northwest and another was to give some other players an opportunity to place higher in the master event. We have a large pool of master players and create more at each regional event, a high number of lower ability master players play an event or two and don’t return because they don’t feel they have a high chance of placing in the money. We felt that by taking the GM players out of the master division and creating there own division, more master players might attend regional’s. We had eight men on the GM list when we ran the first event for eight ball, at the time three of them were not qualified ( 8 weeks minimum) to come to regional’s. We wanted to do an eight man round robbin event and had five available, We decided the fairest way was to review the highest money winners on the list and invite the other players based on this. We
don’t have records prior to the WBCA split. We thought that the winner of the prior eight ball event should get an invitation also to play. The Team Grand Master Policy states that only one GM is allowed to play on a team, we felt that just because you invite a master to play in the event does not make them a true GM. We decided if a master player plays and places in the top three positions of the GM event he would then become a true GM, which Don Wirtaman did in the first event. We feel invited master players in the GM event should not be penalized for stepping up and playing in the toughest event in the Northwest when they could potentially win more money in the master event and not being a designated GM should not effect there team status. The last event Todd Marsh could not attend, so we invited the next highest money winner to play and he accepted. No player has been invited that turned down the invitation to compete. Now we have eleven men and eleven women listed as true Grand Master players on the WBCA web site. I hope this answers most of your questions and clears up any misconceptions you may have had about picking the GM contestants.
RANDELL WALKS THE PROBABILITY TIGHT-ROPE The first Sunday in April brought a bunch of the usual suspects as well as a few new faces to the monthly 14.1 tournament. Shelby Locati, in her first ever straight pool competition, didn’t make the cut but did have one solid win over Stephen Brees and respectable showings against Aaron Curti and Justin Lilje. Justin and Paul Marquez sailed undefeated through their three qualifying matches, and were seeded first and second into the money round. Darrin Walding with two wins and an exciting 43-50 loss to Paul got the third of the four slots. That fourth slot took an extra
match to decide, though. By the rules of the tournament, the place would go to the player with the most wins; Aubrey Robinson and Dave Randell each had two wins. That tie would be broken by comparing points scored in their losing game; Aubrey and Dave both pocketed 32 balls in their losing game. To break that tie, we went to the longest run scored in the tournament thus far; Dave and Aubrey both had runs of 15. (As a math teacher, I am still trying to figure the odds on that first-ever threelevel symmetrical happening.) This was a rare situation, and we didn’t want to settle it by a
boring coin-toss, so they played a quick race to 50 to see who would sneak in to the elimination round. To make a long story short, Dave edged out Aubrey and proceeded to roll over Justin and Darrin to take home the gold. High Run Contest Beat Mosconi’s High Single Run of 526 Win up to $20,000 at CSI 14.1 High Run Contest at the BCAPL Nationals One of the festivities taking place during the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships (May 11-22, 2011 at the Riviera hotel & casino, Las Vegas, NV) is a special 14.1 High Run contest. The contest will take place during the BCAPL event on two Diamond 9’ Pro Cut tables located in booths 30-32 in the Grande ballroom of the Riviera Convention Center. The main contest will feature several divisions: pro, amateur men, amateur women, and amateur seniors. Each participant who signs up pays $20 for 4 turns at the table with their recorded run being an accumulation of their 4 turns. Each division will be awarded cash and prizes based on the top scores. The top eight highest accumulative scores will have a tournament on Saturday, May 21st. The goal of the CSI high run contest is to encourage more interest in the great game of Straight Pool. In addition to the primary 14.1 contest is a very special opportunity. CSI will match up to the $10,000 (cash only) for a potential grand total of $20,000 to award to any player that beats or ties the Straight Pool single run record of 526 balls set by Willie Mosconi in 1954. The shooter who breaks or ties the record must do so in a single, not accumulative, run at the table. CSI will have set up the capability to record the contestants at the CSI 14.1 Contest. CSI Junior Program Fundraiser at BCAPL Nationals to Support U.S. Junior Team This year at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships (May 11-22, 2011 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV), CueSports International (CSI) is expanding fundraising efforts on behalf of the U.S. Junior National Team. The proceeds from the fundraising efforts will be used to hold youth camps throughout the country and to provide coaching and mentoring to the U.S. Junior National Team while they prepare for the WPA Junior World Championships. Coordinating the Junior Program for CSI is WPBA top professional and former Junior National Champion, Sarah Rousey. The CSI Junior Program is working in cooperation with the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF). The fundraising activities will include: Challenge the Stars: May 17th from 8-10 pm in the Grande Ballroom at the Riviera Hotel & Casino Convention Center. By paying a nominal donation you will have a shot at beating some of the top pros from around the world. Fernandez Goes Undefeated Phyllis Fernandez of Spokane, Wash., cruised in a rematch victory to emerge uncontested in the women’s 8-ball tournament held at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery in Spokane, Wash. on March 26. The only threat Fernandez encountered came during the match for the “hammer,” when she went hill-hill against Alicia Kvasnicka, also of Spokane, Wash. The two exchanged blows with Fernandez coming out on top, 5-4. In the losers bracket, Kvasnicka went to work against Nasrin Emam of Mead, Wash., and quickly fell behind 2-0. Emam, who was in the losers bracket at the hands of Fernandez, allowed Kvasnicka a ball and hand, which was enough to turn to momentum. Kvasnicka settled in and tightened up her game with more accurate shooting and better shot selection. She took four unanswered games from Emam to advance from the losers bracket and get another chance at the championship and Fernandez. The run would be cut short as Fernandez routed Kvasnicka 5-0 for the tournament win. For a really extreme angle, you can elevate some and shoot a half-masse shot into the cushion. This works by getting a favorable incoming angle. Don’t spend too much time at this as it’s much harder to control and is needed less often, but give it a few tries. For the shot with the 7, the normal angle from corner pocket to corner pocket is to aim close to the side pocket. On this shot it definitely helps to have follow on the cue ball when it hits the cushion, but if you start with draw (and right English) and shoot softly, the cue ball will have follow by the time it gets to the rail. Finally, with the 8 ball, you need to make a reverse angle off the cushion. I like to use enough speed and draw that the shot is about the same as a stop shot for a ball at the far cushion. On most tables, you should be able to go out beyond the middle diamond on the end rail for the cue ball position shown. Do you have other parts of your game that are not well developed? U.S. Bar Table Championships Becomes a Grand Affair in 2012 Heading into its 19th year the U.S. Bar Table Championships (USBTC), produced by CueSports International (CSI), will soon have a new yet familiar home. The USBTC will still be held in Reno, NV, however the growing and popular weeklong event will be moving to the stunning Grand Sierra Resort and Casino starting February 12-19, 2012. The USBTC was last held at the Grand Sierra in 1996. CSI has enjoyed the last 15 years at its former downtown location, but has physically outgrown the available space. The venue change allows CSI the opportunity to offer even more to players, vendors and sponsors. CSI will expand from the 8000 square feet at its former USBTC location to a usable 40,000 square feet at the Grand Sierra allowing for unlimited growth. The Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino is as its name implies, grand. It has over 2000 guest rooms and suites. Additionally is boasts an extensive array of restaurants, amenities and entertainment options in addition to its large casino. For your dining options there are 4 fine and 7 casual restaurants as well as 7 bars and lounges including the Xtreme Sports Bar and Lounge which has 40 HD Screens and a 12’ x 8’ mega view screen. The list of amenities offers something for almost everyone. Need to relax, visit the Grand Sierra Spa and Health Club. Are you an adrenaline junkie? Then speed over to the Grand Sierra Go-Kart Race Tracks. There you can climb into a half scale NASCAR replica race and choose to test yourself on the 400 foot oval or 900 foot road course. There is also an 18 hole mini golf course, an indoor virtual golf course, 50 lane bowling alley, 6,000 square foot laser tag, full size movie state of the art theatre, driving range and an 180 foot Sky Coaster.
