Jim LeBold and the staff were as gracious as always! A big thank to Mueller for being the tour sponsor, and Rail2Rail Productions who provided the live streaming for the weekend. A field of twenty began playing on a beautiful Saturday morning. Six were brought back on Sunday, Liz Cole and Mary Hopkin played for the point while Deby Welfringer played Kit Dennis and Andrena Brown played Sheila Clark on the B-side.
Hopkin lost to Cole 7-1; Dennis defeated Welfringer 6-5 and Brown over Clark 6-5. Brown, who lost her first match to Hopkin, defeated Dennis 6-2 to get another chance at Hopkin. Hopkin refusing to be denied another chance at Cole defeated Brown 6-3. That set up the rematch between Liz Cole and Mary Hopkin. Liz Cole jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Mary Hopkin won the next three racks to move ahead 3-2. Liz was able to tie the match but could not hold Mary back. The next 5 racks belong to Mary to bring the score to 8-3 but a critical miss on the nine in game 12 stopped Mary’s run. Liz was able to win 3 more games before Mary finally closed the door on Liz’s comeback. Congratulations to Mary Hopkin for an outstanding performance! Getting Instruction THE SKY ISplayers NOgo against LIMIT I wonder why pool the grain most every time?
They don’t get help. If you were studying the martial arts you’d have a sensei, you would have someone teaching you the craft. If you played golf, you would have somebody help you with your swing, with your approach shot, your putting, at least to help you become better than what you are. If you’ve played any sports you know you have a coach. He teaches you, he shows you, makes you practice and do drills that will help you in the long run. Not so with the average pool player, not so with most pool players. It seems to be, in my opinion, an ego thing. For some reason, if we ask for help or go to a billiard school, to have lessons, somehow, we are admitting that we don’t know enough about the game. We’re not good enough, or even worse because somebody is better than us, and God only knows that nobody can be better than we are. This phenomenon seems to stretch across all classes of pool players, whether it’s average barroom pokers or top players. They will practice the drills at times, not the shots that they have a hard time doing or to remember the English and how it takes and where it goes, but they don’t get instructions, and I’m talking about most. There are exceptions of course and those players are to be applauded.
80-90% of how good you shoot. Experience they say is the best teacher. This is true but in order to have quality experience you must practice. In order to practice you must have someone show you or tell you what you are doing incorrectly. Old habits are hard to break, whether it’s with your swing, whether it’s with your stance, whether it’s your mental game or whether it’s how you approach the table, what your routine is, whether it’s the way you stroke your cue, or whether it’s how you hit, whether you stand up. There are numerous things that can go wrong in your game. We’ve all experienced those, so practice, with a qualified instructor or drills. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a start and in my opinion you may need to use more than one instructor. Instructors are human beings and some have strengths in one area or another. You may find that going to another instructor will help you in your game even more. Let me know .... Email pool@onthebreaknews.com .... Subject: Chalk Talk
In my opinion, in order for your game to get better you have to find someone, first that you trust, someone that has accomplished winning, whether its in a local tournament, regional or national. Someone who has been there, done that, been in pressure situations, in the finals. Being able to know the mental game is

Saratoga, Wyoming - USA’s #1 ranked Shane Van Boening went undefeated to win the 6th Annual Wyoming Open. The South Dakota native
defeated Hawaii’s Rocket Rodney Morris in the 8-Ball bar table event that boasted a full field of 48 in the Masters Division. The event was produced by E.J. Glode and co-promoted by Dragon Promotions. Drawing over 150 players in 3 divisions, the Wyoming Open is widely regarded as the biggest and best pool event in 6 states. The event was sponsored by Asia’s #1 pro cloth Andy Cloth and Master Chalk. Local partners are Duke’s Bar & Grill and Riviera Lodge and all events coordinated by Shively Hardware. In the Sportsman Division featuring novice players, Mike Kozeniewski of Wyoming won the 50 player division. He defeated Dwain Twiford twice in the finals. The Classic Division featured a full 64 player field of advanced players and $1600 for 1st place. Colorado’s Don Clements went undefeated including wins over runner-up Kevin Wall twice. The main event open to masters level as well as professionals featured $5000 added to the purse, not including a calcutta which featured another $6000 in prizes. Early favaorites included Rodney Morris, Stevie Moore, Charlie Williams, Raj Hundal, Rafael Martinez, and Shane Van Boening. Other notable names were Marc Vidal of Spain and Mark Tadd of Utah. All the favorites made it to the final 16 bracket. In the re-draw, Martinez defeated Hundal while Vidal made an upset over Charlie Williams 7-5. Van Boening defeated Moore, Martinez 6-5, and another hill hill thriller over Rodney Morris 6-5. Hundal then shutout Stevie 7-0 while Williams bounced back with 2 more wins to make the final 8. The final day saw Rafael Martinez defeat Williams 7-4 while Morris won over Hundal. Morris then went on to win a tough 7-5 match over Martinez after being down 4-0. He then went on to eliminate Vidal 7-5 who finished 3rd. Notable finishes by non-pro players included 5th place by Ricardo Martinez (unrelated to Rafael), and Bruce Wilson who got 7th. Qualifies Four Players April 15, 2013 (Englewood, CO): On March 31, the 6th Annual Wyoming Open 8-Ball tournament in Saratoga added two juniors divisions to its event, qualifying four young players to the 2013 BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships. Of the 22 participants who arrived on Easter Sunday, Nebraska brothers Seth and Sheign Krafczik both went undefeated through their respective divisions, earning their spots into Nationals. Also joining them was 10-year-old Kelly Glode, daughter of tournament director/promoter E.J. Glode. This year’s masters division drew many of the top professional players including Shane Van Boening, Stevie Moore, Charlie Williams, Rodney Morris, Raj Hundal, and more. In between matches, Charlie and Rodney showed their support for the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) by taking challenge matches to help raise money for the organization. In total, E.J. added $500 to the juniors’ event, between entries into nationals and academic scholarships. Through everyone’s support, the BEF was able to raise over $1,600 for the foundation, “We’re very happy with the turnout and plan to make the juniors’ addition an annual part of our event,” said E.J.

THE INTERVIEW: Viper: Where were you born? Lu: Hsinchu, Tawain Viper: Do you have a girlfriend? Lu: No, I am basically married to pool Viper: Do you have siblings? Lu: I am the oldest of five children and none of them play pool Viper: What do your parents think of your pool career? Lu: My parents have always encouraged to me to be the best that I can be. Viper: As far as a Taiwanese player, who did you look up to? Lu: Ching-Shun Yang, he is a couple of years older than me and he was the number 1 ranked player in the world. His mental game is superior; nothing can bring him out of his game and that is what I admire that about him most. Viper: In your opinion, what parts of the world produce the best players? Lu: Taiwan and the Philippines Why: Lu: Not because of talent rather I think it’s because of the equipment. Over in Asia it’s very humid and most pool halls over there have extremely tight tables. So when the big names come over to the US it seems a little easier Viper: Who’s your favorite female pool player? Lu: Alison Fisher, because she is so consistent and a very nice person Viper: Where and when did you first start playing pool? Lu: I was 13 years old, and visited a bookshop that housed a pool table and I was intrigued by the game so I started playing. Viper: What are your biggest accomplishments in the sport of billiards so far in your young career? Lu: In 1998 I won my first WPA world junior 9-ball
championships Viper: Do you currently have any sponsors? Lu: No and I am looking for sponsorships for here in the USA. Later in the spring I plan on coming back and playing in more US events including the US Open. Viper: Did you ever play in a pool league? Lu: NO, they do not exist in Taiwan Viper: Are you good at any other sports? Lu: I started playing baseball in elementary school and got really good at it. Viper: Describe yourself in three words? Lu: Quiet, dedicated and determined Viper: If you had to live your life over again, what would one thing you change about yourself and/or your pool career? (Viper continued on page 39)

Get ready to lock and load and have some fun When you first started out in pocket billiards you were an all offensive player. You went for everything. When you approached the table your purpose was to win. If you go for the win twenty times you will win many games. In fact, the more you go for a win the more you will win. You cannot win a game by playing safe. How about those run and gun shooters?
The Monk
Tim Miller
They have more fun than the conservative player. But you have to know when to go for it. I won’t go for a low percentage bank shot. That is one chance to win and it is a slim one. When I am faced with no shot, I will look at how many balls can I get moving with this one shot? If I can send my object ball into a clump and get some balls rolling, I am tempted to do that. In a very serious match in Wisconsin I ran seven racks of nine ball in a row. On three of those runs I sent balls crashing into other balls just to keep my run going. In other words, I used the “Poke and Hope” style. It was fun and I kept my turn at the table for seven racks. If you develop an aggressive style people will begin to fear you. I won a race to five on all short racks. That is enough to drive an opponent into retirement. He would not shake my hand after the match. When you send an object ball into a cluster you should use force follow (over spin). This puts back spin on the object ball and with the back spin you send the other balls a further distance. Plus the cue ball is turned into a missile as it careens forward in an uncontrolled manner. This type of shooting makes a pure shooter sick. Make sure you have a dumbfounded look on your face when balls drop into the pockets. You are welcome to mutter “how did that happen” as you proceed to run out for the win. Be creative. I had a very makeable four ball in the corner pocket. The nine was on the other end of the table near the rail as a big ball. In other words, it was a thumb width off the rail. I saw that I could bank the four into the rail just before the nine and I’d make the nine. I also saw that I could hide the cue ball behind the seven and separate it from the four ball. This was a chance to win that many players never see. I banked the four, almost made the nine, hung it in the pocket and left him no way to even hit the four ball. So with ball in hand I finished what I started. Most importantly, enjoy the game. Put the fun back into it. In your next tournament play a run and gun type of offense. Lock and load when you go to the table. Smile when balls drop in. I faced a two ball that was in a cluster. All I could see was the edge of the ball so I was looking at an easy safe. I chose to kick the two ball hard. This meant that five balls were going to be sent on their way and two of them dropped in the pocket with one of them being the nine ball. Cock that cue and blast your way to the finals. May all the rolls go your way.

Double Follow Shots When I was first learning pool, the book I learned from was Willie Mosconi’s “Winning Pocket Billiards.” In the back of the book are some trick shots including some rather remarkable stroke shots that Willie wowed audiences with during his many exhibitions. I didn’t realize that such shots might not be intended for beginners, so I went ahead and learned them even before I could run a rack. Here are two shots that are both amazing (to players who don’t know much about the game) and useful. They are also not that hard to shoot if you’re willing to spin the cue ball and hit it a little harder than the typical shot. I call them “double follow” because they follow to the rail and then they follow back to the same rail. Even as a beginner, I liked to play Shot 1. At nine ball you could play the simple stop shot bank on the 1 ball but that would leave a very tough cut on the 2. If you’re not playing a runout player, why not try to get shape? Even if you are playing a good player, a safety battle is as likely to leave him with the first good run-out possibility as you. To make the bank reasonable here, the 1 ball needs to be a little off the cushion to avoid the kiss and at an angle where you need to hit slightly on the right side of the 1. Just slightly. Left follow will take the cue ball to the left (from the shooter’s viewpoint) and the follow after the cushion contact will take the cue ball back towards the rail. You might even get a second cushion on the way to shape on the 2. When practicing the shot, first work to get the right action on the cue ball, then worry about mak-ing the bank. You will soon learn the positions that work for both the bank and double follow. Shot 2 comes up far more often. You have an almosthanger that’s by the pocket but with a little angle and you want to leave the cue ball on the cushion for an easy 5-9 combo to win the game. Trying a stop shot either misses the shot or slides too far to the side. You could try a slow roller and pray for a table and a round cue ball. A surer way is to play a double follow with inside (right) English on the cue ball. The English will keep the cue ball from going too far towards the 5 and 6. The long distance
14 The Break - May 2013
www.TheBreakMagazine.com
Bob Jewett
between the cue ball and the 4 is actually helpful because the table will put follow on the cue ball over that distance so as long as you start the cue ball with some follow, it will have plenty by the time it gets to the 4. Plan B for this shot is from Mosconi’s book. If you hit the 4 a little thinner and with no English or a little left English, a little harder, and maybe a little more follow, you can loop the cue ball around the 5-6 and go for the 9 immediately. This is an excellent shot to convince your opponent that either you’re crazy or much better than he thought or both, so it’s really a psychological play. It’s also fun. If you hope to improve your game, you need to increase your comfort zone and learn to make shots you don’t yet enjoy playing. Spending a few minutes with these shots will help do that.

The Semi Annual Diamond Billiards
Tournament of Champions The semi- annual Tournament of Champions was held Saturday April 20th at Diamond Billiards. The format for this tournament is Texas Express 9-ball Handicapped. This is a true double elimination Race to 7/Race to 5. Alternating breaks and you rack your own. Jump cues are allowed, three foul rule in effect, cue ball fouls only. The first event of the day would be a $410 Calcutta. Two players would rise to the top and take top honors, Karlo Rocha and Tom Bentley. No one knew these two competitors would be the ones to beat all day “not yet that is”. The field for this first TOC of 2013 was 18 strong. The Tournament started at noon. As the players put together their cues you could see everyone was here to compete for the $1085.00 purse that was up for grabs. This event definitely brings out the big hitters. As the day progressed and the field thinned, some very common names were still active on the brackets. When the finals started two local Reno players were the last standing Karlo Rocha and Tom Bentley. Tom was in the hot seat going into the finals. This is a true double elimination tournament. Karlo had his work cut out for him coming from the one loss side. He would have to beat Tom twice if he was going to take the title. The first set went to Karlo ~ hill/hill 7-6. The second set would see Karlo on a lucky streak beating Tom 5-1 and taking the title of Champion. Congratulations to Karlo Rocha, Diamond Billiards of Reno’s April 2013 TOC Champion. Diamonds would like to thank all the players and fans that came out for the event. The next tournament qualifiers have already started. For more information on how you can qualify for the next TOC go to www.RenoBilliards.com. See you at the Pool hall!!

TABLE TALK Live Streaming BY: DON AKERLOW
Personally I think live streaming is the best thing to happen to pool since “The Color of Money”. We are still in the infancy of live streaming. The first time I saw it on my computer was in the summer of 2007. I was amazed. I was sitting in my house, in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, in Montana and I was watching two players in Olathe, Kansas playing pool for thousands of dollars. How cool could this be? It was almost like watching a movie. The commentary was more in the lines of people talking in a pool hall than a movie script but that was fine. I grew up in a pool hall. I’m not here critiquing that quality. I am mystified by the lack of viewership. As the summer of 2013 approaches, its been six years. The commentary has come from entertaining to professional and that’s a good thing. The quality of the stream for some has become excellent. Yet the number of viewers are still down. If you use percentages you may be up 10% or 20% and maybe more. When you start with only a few hundred viewers to possibly one to two thousand that seems great if you are live streaming. I have. I have gotten as low as and as high as these numbers. I’m not speaking of the live streamers in any negative way. We have worked for nothing or next to it. Sometimes the only payment is a handshake and thank you or someone saying, “This is really cool, man!” We try to get sponsors, advertisers or logos on the live stream. Commercials inside the live stream and
it is a rough road to travel. There’s the travel to, the set up, making sure the internet has enough upload speed, test the audio, check your cameras and no matter how many times you do this something can always go wrong. So before you start your show you cross your fingers. Then there is the countless number of hours, usually 12+ per day that you are on the air. Kudos to all the live streamers. Clearly its not all about the money. To me it was always about the numbers. We do not get the numbers even the pros. Shows on cable have been cancelled because they only have a viewership of 150,000. Imagine any live streamer getting that kind of numbers! On our Ustream page we show a viewership of over one million but the numbers don’t match up. The statistical analysis that is offered by Ustream doesn’t match the viewership numbers displayed on the home page they are putting out. Imagine if you will a live streamer, any live streamer, taking the total number of viewers that you would get from a weekend of live streaming, anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 and that would be what you would see at any given time watching the live streaming! Whether it would be a league national championship, the U. S. Open or any $5,000 added pool tournament. Where are the viewers? If you are reading this and you have never seen a live streaming, go to Ustream. tv, search words, “billiards, pool” and find two or three live streamings and make it your favorite. And don’t forget to watch the challenge matches too. There are some pay for view matches that are excellent. We have to get the numbers up if this is to grow. Watch - just watch. It may not be ESPN but take the time to watch. We welcome your comments. pool@onthebreaknews.com Subject line: Table Talk

Jana Montour vs. fellow Canadian Sandy Badger. The B-side matches were Kimberly Kirk vs. Mary Hopkin and Debbie Cicchitti vs. Kim Jones. Deby defeated Tamre 7-4 and Jana dispatched Sandy 7-1 to play for the point. On the B-side, Kimberly defeated Mary 6-3 to move on and play Tamre while Kim Jones beat Debbie 6-0 to play Sandy. 5th/6th place was settled by Sandy beating Kim in a double hill match and Tamre besting Kimberly 6-4. That set the matchup for 4th between Tamre and Sandy. The point match was a double hill battle in which Jana came out victorious, sending Deby to the B-side to play Sandy after she defeated Tamre 6-4. This match turned into another hill hill battle between the ladies, but Sandy ended Deby hopes to play in the finals. Sandy got her opportunity to play Jana again, but was unable to stem the tide of table runs by Jana. Jana defeated Sandy 9-2 to become the Washington State Champion. However, because of Jana’s ranking in the WPBA and already having a spot in the US Open, the paid entry goes to Sandy Badger. Not only did Shane Van Boening win the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship at this year’s Super Billiards Expo at the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison, NJ (April 4-7) for the second year in a row, becoming the first back-to-back champion, he did it by giving up only two, race-to-8 double sets through six matches. RALLY IN EDISON
TAP – RALLY IN EDISON 2013 – Edison, NJ TAP, LLC has another successful history making event ! Little River, SC, April 18th, 2013 There was electricity in the air, as thousands of eyes were set on watching and playing yet another legendary Dream Team/Singles Rally at Edison event at the NJ Expo Center and for good reason. Players created Dream Team Rosters of TAP players from
all over the USA and Canada. The competition was stiff and it wasn’t black and white who the winners would be in either the 8 ball dream team, 9 ball dream team or 8 ball singles events. Registration started on Wednesday April 3rd in conjunction with the Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo. TAP event staff welcomed players and licensees and provided their badges, programs and information. Registration continued through the 4th, while the TAP National meeting for Licensees and TAP Corporate took place at the Sheraton Edison. On the evening of the 4th, the 8 Ball Singles competition started on 90 Diamond Tables. Players of all skill levels played in the double elimination brackets and continued each evening throughout the weeks’ event. 8 and 9 Ball Dream Team competitions started the morning of the 5th running on high voltage as 180 dream teams played round robin then out to single elimination until its completion on the 7th. Livestreaming by Onsite Pool Network provided a new kind of exposure to a TAP event, that was not provided before. Players at the event and throughout the world could watch the matches in 8, 9 and Singles competition on two tables throughout the extended weekend. Commentating, scores, interviews and information were provided in High Definition and speeds of all types to accommodate different cellphones, tablets and Singles 7 - 8 Ball Champio n laptops. Brandon Ashcraft, MI McDermott Handcrafted Cues, TAP’s Cue Sponsor,
was onsite with TAP Members Only Specials, and provided instruction and sales of their products from their booth. Sharkin U Apparel once again provided sales of their popular demand apparel line and provided gift packages to each of the singles event winners. TAP Apparel showcased their new line of apparel, event shirts and the TAP Online store as well as their new full line of customized products they can do for TAP Players and their Licensees. As a vendor, the TAP Sales and information booth had a busy 4 days as well, at this year’s Super Billiard Expo and TAP’s Rally event. The people that stopped by to ask about Singles 5 - 8 Ball Champio n bringing TAP into their area Paul Caivano, NJ seemed to be charged up, serious and interested even more than in the past years, which has been greatly successful. People spoke of being tired of their league that they are now in and feel TAP is the better choice for them and their players. At this time, one contract in New England has been signed and another in New York is expected shortly. Many of the people gathered information and advertising to take back and talk to their players to see how much interest is there before they committed but more new licensees are expected in the coming months. Most, if not all, were very optimistic that players in their area want a change. With events like the Rally Dream Team events, TAP hosting our nationals by traveling to all parts of the United States plus the overall TAP format, Pool-Net software and other features of what TAP offers their members it seems to be just what they are looking for in a league. So the Event and the Competition throughout the event was impressive. Several “on the hill” matches were played by pion Singles 2/3 - 8 Ball Cham all. Some great amateur nada Svetlana Kozac, TAP Ca play happened. the Rally in Edison 2013 Champions were crowned.

Get a Grip We Salute You!
BY: SHARI ROSS
It seems I have hit some nerves but at least people are finally taking note of what I am saying. I want to make it very clear I am pointing out problems and possible solutions to these problems so we may elevate our sport not calling out individuals for public crucifixion. So to change it up a little I would like to use this month to recognize and thank the people who keep pool alive. Whether it be volunteering at an event, hosting one, running a league or streaming tournaments, without these people we are extinct.
Last month I made reference to our regional BCA event as an area that needs some tending to, the key word being some. This is also a place where many people give up time everyday to set up and put on these events, most of which wear several hats. If you haven’t been to the website, www.westernbca.org, you many not know how many people it takes to put on these events and that they are always in need of more bodies. From the president all the way down to the raffle girls everyone is a volunteer, except for the refs. I’m pretty sure you can figure out that this doesn’t come together over night, when I said everyday

I meant exactly that. They do this not for the glory, but for a true love of the game. These are generally thankless jobs so please let me say thank you. This of course doesn’t just apply to the BCA but to any league or tour, amateur or professional.
So many people give their time for little or no money so we can play and compete and we need to start being aware of and grateful for what they do. Hopefully in the near future we can change the standing of billiards so we may better pay and hire those qualified, maybe even get the players more involved too. For one last time let me say thank you for all you do. Do stand, take a bow and pat yourselves on the back, if you don’t have someone to do, cause you deserve at least that.
Then we have our league operators and division managers, the nuts and bolts of the leagues, without them we can’t qualify to play in regional or national events. Sometimes it seems we take them for granted or maybe just don’t understand what all they do. 3 New Tour Records Set
DEBY WELFRINGER
This score broke the tour record for total Snap games (break, take ball-in-hand and running the rack) previously held by Drew Curmutt scoring 8 break and runs out of his 12 games (Francisco earned a 12th game for breaking and running his 11th game). That’s some good shooting there. Coming in second in the first round was Pete Gonzales bringing an 84 and a total score with handicap of 148.22. Others that moved on to the Sudden death round were Deby Welfringer shooting an 82 and David Lash 75. All the players that qualified for the Sudden Death played out of Malarkeys in Tacoma WA and this round was fierce. Francisco, Gonzales and Welfringer were neck to neck the entire match. Deby Welfringer caught top performance this round of 124 points (50.32 points over her average) for a total score with handicap at 182.42 ousting Pete Gonzales out of first place in this round by only 0.20 points. Gonzales shot a 118 (breaking the tour record for total balls on the break of 26 previously held by Cory VanNorttick) for a final score of 182.22 and Larry Francisco still shooting over his average with a 100 and a total score of 153.59. This round took Welfringer and Gonzales to the finals. Gonzales smashed Welfringer in the finals by 54.80 points with his best match of 112 (44.75 points over his average). Gonzales’ best score for this round was 112 and a final score of 176.22 making Gonzales the winner of the Open 198 division. Great shooting by all the players and it was very exciting to watch. Behind the Rock Tour (BTRT) has another division for 9 foot table players. This division is called 220. This division plays a modified version of 10 ball vs. the Ghost. Play from your local room and compete with rooms from all states. If you’re interested in learning more about this tour, the format and how to start playing visit our website at www.behindtherocktour.com or call 253-226-3594 for more information.
FRANNIE JOHNSON
PETE GONZALES
This event was exciting. This was the first ever 198 Tri-annual event April 13, 2013. 198 is a game that is played on 7 foot or 8 foot tables playing a modified version of 9 ball vs. the Ghost. These tournaments are played from any certified location in any state. For the triannual event we had six locations participating. Players played from their local pool room simultaneously with all the other participating rooms. In the tri-annual event we have three different rounds. After each round, match scores and stats are uploaded to the website www.behindtherocktour. com and the winners of each round are calculated. It ends up being a little like the Biggest Loser if you’re above the yellow out you move on and if you finish below the yellow line you’re out. We have two divisions participating in this event, the Intermediate and the Open division. The Intermediate division was players with averages of 0-45 over their past 20 matches and it was fierce competition. The first round consisted of players playing two matches. We had three players that posted personal bests. Cory VanNortrick shot a 67 (23.70 over his average not to mention that he broke the tour record for total balls on the break of 25 out of 11 games), Frannie Johnson 54 (25.07 over her average) and Dianna Trent 49 (18.33 over her average). All three of these players along with Terry Lawrence and Ken Fine moved to the Sudden Death round of one match. From here Cory VanNortrick topped his personal best again, shooting a 75 combined with his handicap giving him a final score of 160.77. Frannie Johnson came in behind him with a 35 and a total score with handicap of 129.70. This moved both these player to the finals for two matches. For the finals the best score of the two matches are used to determine the winners. VanNortrick continued to play over his average shooting a 50 and a 31 for his top score of 135.77, but Johnson fired back with a 19 and 45 for a top score of 143.70. Johnson takes home the intermediate division title. The Open players (players with averages of 45 and more over their past 20 matches) were not to be outdone by the Intermediate division excellent play and they brought it as well. In the first round, Larry Francisco shot a personal best of 125 scratch score topping his previous average by 45.94 points and bringing a final score of 178.59.

Lucky
BY: ANDREW MONSTIS
Lucky About Life: PART 3
I drove back from Kansas to Lucky’s Ranch. The drive was long so we started a conversation about life. We in a deep conversation covered what seemed to be a scratch on the surface. I said “Life travels across vast knowledge. What we pick up along the way is based on what we previously know and want to know or believe, which makes it limited to our own sphere of the world. In today’s world, everyone seems to know everything, so they say how can one not be informed. We all want to feel that we know it all and our opinion is upmost, Most of that is an illusion”……..
fun. Most of my discovery was that Lucky was so knowledgeable. I had 8 years of College and Lucky never went to college and knew so much. He spent time reading and consciously teaching himself and not relying on just beliefs that everyone one else might have. He had so much more substance that playing pool and reading people. The world of pool has changed the romantic era of pool should never be forgotten because as knowledge is our predecessors made pool better through each year. Pool would not have the identity without champions like Ralph Greenleaf, Willie Hoppe Willie Mosconi, Jimmy Caras, Mike Sigel’s and Efren Reyes’s. Or the Hustlers Minnesota Fats, Ronnie Allen, Cornbread Red.
Lucky had so much more substance than playing pool and reading people.
Lucky believes “that there are two ways to look at how the world develops: the first is through the progress of history and human civilization, and the second is through the progress of knowledge and human understanding”…… Knowledge moves when intake of information is greater than any previous generation? We are bombarded with words and ideas, pictures and concepts. The classic example is that we once believed that the earth was the center of the universe. Everyone was told that. The religious thought kept knowledge from progressing. This notion has rarely publicly questioned for centuries. Eventually one becomes compels to ask the question: why? Most of us do this in everyday life. And I am no different.
It was a game of nobles now everyone play at it. The word “pool” means a collective bet, or ante. Many non-billiard games, such as poker, involve a pool but it was to pocket billiards that the name became attached. The term “poolroom” now means a place where pool is played, but in the 19th century a poolroom was a betting parlor for horse racing. Pool tables were installed so patrons could pass time between races. The two became connected in the public mind, but the unsavory connotation of “poolroom” came from the betting that took place there, not from billiards.
We spent time establishing what we did know or thought we knew. This whole conversation was

May 2013 - The Break 31
Deuel and Lee
BY SKIP MALONEY - AZBILLIARDS.COM
l e u e D y e Cor 32 The Break - May 2013
Corey Deuel stopped a seven-match, loss-side streak by Hui Chan Lu to win the Men’s event, while Jeannette Lee, a little later, had to get by Nicole Keeney twice, and in the process, lend new meaning to the term “playing lights out” on her way to the championship. Both were winners in the 22nd Annual Four Bears Classic, a $16,500-added (total) pair of 8-ball tournaments for Men and the Ladies from April 18-21 at the Four Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town, ND. The long weekend actually began on Wednesday, April 17, when pro player Melissa Little sponsored a pool clinic for a local Boys/Girls club, at which 50 youngsters were given a pool cue and case by the Four Bears Casino Lodge. On Thursday night, events got officially under way with a $2,000-added, 9-ball tournament that was won by Joey Gray. The main event Men’s and Ladies 8-ball tournaments, which began on Friday night, drew 164 and 55 entrants, respectively. Both were triple elimination tournaments, at which competitors on both sides of the bracket, were re-drawn and set up for a new double elimination tournament. The men re-drew when the field had narrowed down to 16 on each side of the bracket. The women did so with eight on each side of the bracket. Advancing among the winners’ side final four in the men’s event were Shane Van Boening, Bart Good, Mark Haddad (who finished second in last year’s tournament, won by Jesse Engel) and Deuel. Van Boening and Deuel advanced to the hot seat match with identical 6-1 victories over Good and Haddad, respectively. Deuel battled Van Boening for the hot seat and came out on top 6-3. Van Boening would not make it back for a second chance against Deuel. Instead, Deuel would be challenged by Hui Chan Lu, who’d been sent west by Good, and embarked on the seven-match, loss-side streak that put him into the finals. The streak included victories over Shane Manolo and the Thursday night, 9-Ball winner, Joey Gray, which set Chan up to face Haddad. Good drew Stan Tourangeau, who’d eliminated Chip Compton andDanny Olson. Lu and Tourangeau met in the quarterfinals once Lu had downed Haddad 6-2 and Tourangeau bested Good 6-3. Lu chalked up his sixth straight with a double hill win over Tourangeau and then finished Van Boening’s weekend with a 6-3 win in the semifinals. Deuel, though, stopped Lu’s bid for the title with a 6-3 win. Had it not been for Jeanette Lee, the finals of the Ladies event might have been a carbon copy of last year’s finals, in which Melissa Little and Nicole Keeney battled. This year, with Lee in the hot seat, Little and Keeney squared off in the semifinals. Lee had defeated Keeney in the battle for the hot seat 5-3, once Lee had sent Sam Matuska west and Keeney had defeated Lisa McNab. Little, having been sent to the loss side by Lee when they were among the final eight winners, had defeated Rachel Nadue and Joanne Jacobs to pick up McNab. Matuska drew Joelle Bearstall, who’d gotten by Rene Benton and Julie Brunelle. Little and Mutuska advanced to the quarterfinals, where Little prevailed 6-1, setting up last year’s final scenario in this year’s semifinals. The result was the same, almost to the score. Keeney had downed Little 5-3 in last year’s finals and ended her Four Bears Classic bid this year 5-2 in the semifinals. About midway through the final match between Lee and Keeney, the lights went out. Emergency lighting stopped the scene from being a visual blackout (The Big Truck Show kept broadcasting), but the conditions stopped play. When play resumed about half an hour later, Lee ended Keeney’s bid to win the Classic for the second year in a row with a 5-2 victory. In the no-scores-kept Thursday night 9-ball tournament, Joey Gray was in the hot seat, having sent Chip Compton to the semifinals. Compton moved over to face the man he’d sent to the loss side from among the winners’ side final four, Warren Kiamco. Kiamco had just defeated Jeanette Lee in the quarterfinals, and wreaked his vengeance on Compton, setting up the final against Gray. Gray prevailed 6-4 to take the title. Tour director Ray Poitra thanked the staff and crew at the Four Bears Casino & Lodge, including general manager Pat Packineau, Spencer Wilkinson, and Scott Wilson, as well as Trustland, Inc, PoolActionTV (The Big Truck show, which

Press Release
LADIES, IT’S TIGER TIME!
TWCWT 2013 STARTS IN MAY– SAVE THE DATES LADIES, IT IS TIGER TIME! We want to welcome all the returning and new players and our wonderful sponsors to the 2013 Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour. The first stop of the tour is right around the corner. Save the dates, check out our new two pool rooms, a new sponsor, read a little about our new board members and note the changes in tour stops. The Break, a monthly billiards publication that provides pool enthusiasts with information on upcoming tournaments and leagues throughout the states is our media sponsor. We have also revamped our board members with new faces, ideas and solid experience which will only continue to strengthen our already strong but growing foundation. Let me welcome Stephanie Hefner, Kevin Yi and Eric Harada. They will be part of our support group which will assist with all of the preparation before season and facilitation during the season. Stephanie has been in love with the game of pool her entire life. Her first encounter with the TWCWT was in 2010 as a spectator. This is her second year as a player and “I couldn’t be more excited to be involved with such a fantastic and supportive outlet for women’s pool.” Kevin has been playing pool for almost two decades. When asked to
volunteer with the tour, Kevin thought it would be a great event to support. “I’m new to this but hope I can help make the tour bigger and better in the upcoming future.” Eric has been playing for over 40 years and teaching for over 30. He has experience competing locally and nationally at all levels, being a House Pro, and also being on tournament staff. We are excited to have such a seasoned veteran on our board. We would also like to acknowledge our returning 2013 committee members: Eleanor Callado, Tournament Participant, 2012 second place holder and recent 1st place at the WPBA Regional Tour Championship, Linda Silva, Tournament Director, and Cony Mendoza, Tournament Coordinator, League Co-owner and Director of Diablo Valley Pool Leagues in the Contra Costa area and Sponsor to the tour. As always, we want to thank our regular sponsors for 2013: Tony Kalamdaryan, President of Tiger products Mark Griffith of Magic Rack Cony & Tina Mendoza of Diablo Valley Pool Leagues Don Akerlow of www.OnTheBreakNews.com

Wyoming Open The finals pitted two red hot players in Morris vs Van Boening. Both players went #2 and #1 respectively in the player auction. The match went extremely fast. Morris had beaten Van Boening in the past 5 other tournament. But Van Boening’s break seemed unstoppable, and Morris scraatched the final break giving the match to Shane 7-5. “Bar Box 8-Ball is my all time favorite game,” said Shane. The Wyoming Open also had a second chance Hard Luck 9-Ball event for the players knocked out early. This was won by Ace Brown of Utah who was thrilled to finally win his first trophy at the Wyoming Open in 6 tries. Several mini-tournaments were held at Duke’s Bar that went on to 3am. “I’m finally starting to shoot loose! It’s so much fun! I won’t ever miss this tournament!”, said Brad Kallevig. “The Wyoming Open is the biggest week for my business and for

many others in our town. E.J. is always trying to improve the event, and this year is by far the best Wyoming Open ever!”, said Chris Duke, owner of Duke’s Bar & Grill. Duke is one of the event’s primary sponsors and partner. The Wyoming Open is organized and promoted by Shively Hardware & Dragon Promotions “If we had more promoters like E.J. Glode, the pool world would be a much better place”, said Raj Hundal. All streaming matches will be available for archive viewing at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ oneshotproductions. For more info and to follow the WY Open goto www.facebook.com/wyomingopen The event is majorly supported by the town’s own businesses which include : Hotel Wolf, Duke’s Bar & Grill, Valley Foods, Riviera Lodge, Carbon County, and Shively Hardware.
“The way I’ve been playing, I knew Shane would have to play absolutely perfect to beat me. And sure enough, he played a flawless two matches against me this tournament. My hat’s off to him” Rodney Morris

(continued from page 12) Lu: I have had the opportunity to travel the world and I wouldn’t change a thing Viper: Who were/are your favorite professionals? Lu: I really liked Rodney Morris, when I was a kid I got to watch him in action and he was unbeatable in Taiwan. Viper: How do you prepare for events? Lu: I listen to my music on my iPod and practice for a few hours per day. I work on my break and play the ghost. I like to listen to American hip-hop music – Lady Ga Ga Viper: What was the best advice you were ever given? Lu: The National Coach for the Taiwanese team told me once growing up to not ever worry about the score and try to stay relaxed as much as possible. Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool? Lu: I love everything about competing especially when I am winning. Viper: If you could say one thing to a young up-coming player what would it be? Lu: Make sure you have enough time to practice and analyze your game so you can learn your mistakes. Don’t make the same mistake twice. Try your best not to focus your attention on winning and losing. Viper: What’s your Favorite game? Lu: 10-ball because it’s so much more challenging then 9-ball. A special “Thank-you” to Lu Hui Chan for taking time out of his travelling schedule to participate in my Ask the Viper. Till next month you can find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wpbaviper
