Tacoma Elks May 14 19, 2002 Torbjörn Blomdahl went undefeated in eleven games to win the USBA/Carom Corner tournament held May 14 19, 2002 at the Tacoma Elks in Tacoma, Washington. Second place finisher, Sang Chun Lee, was also undefeated with a 10/0 win/loss record going into the final against Blomdahl, but Blomdahl was too strong in the final match finishing 50 points in 18 innings. Sang Lee scored 36 points in his 18 innings for an average of 2.000 but even that was not enough to beat Blomdahl. Blomdahl averaged 1.756 for the tournament. Raymond Ceulemans, the Living Legend and current UMB World
Champion, finished third and demonstrated that he is still on top of his game with a grand average of 1.644. For a moment it looked as though Ceulemans would hand Lee his first loss of the tournament. Ceulemans was leading 48 37 and suddenly it was over in two innings when Lee ran ten and in the next inning three to close out the match. Ceulemans had three losses against Blomdahl, Lee, and Henk Habraken, who finished fourth averaging 1.477. Pedro Piedrabuena finished fifth with the same 8/3 win/loss record as Ceulemans and Habraken both of whom averaged higher than Piedrabuena. (Carom Corner Tour continued on page 5)

Did You Know?
(continued from page 3)
Carom Versus Pool Cues by: Ron Kilby
In general, pool and carom players use distinctly different cues from one another. While certain individuals are skilled at both games using only one cue, they are the exception. Pool players predominantly use a 58 inch, 19 oz. average weight cue with a 12.75 to 13.25 mm tip. The joint of a pool cue normally incorporates a steel bolt and may have a steel collar as well. Shaft flex varies widely among pool players, with entire segments of the population insisting that their particular taper and flex is THE ultimate and final solution to the hotly debated issue of squirt, deflection, power, etc. The challenges and counter-challenges among pool cue makers over such matters is the marketing manager s dream (or nightmare, as the case may be.) Carom players, on the other hand, whose distribution worldwide is probably greater than pool, have long since settled the issue to their general satisfaction. Carom cues are shorter, typically from 54 to 56 inches long, lighter, typically 16.5 to 18.5 ounces, and use 11-12 mm tips, only rarely smaller or larger. Carom cues traditionally have a joint which includes wooden threads on the end of the shaft, or some other joint that minimizes the weight in the joint because carom players prefer their cues to balance more under the hand. A carom cue has a thicker butt and commonly a much thicker joint than a pool cue, and the overall taper of the cue shaft, with a few notable exceptions, is nearly conical from joint to tip. Summarily, a carom cue is much stiffer than a pool cue. A carom ball weighs almost exactly an ounce more than a pool ball (some varieties even more); hence more energy is required to drive it around a table. A carom player wishes to develop such touch for the game that they can repeatedly control the distance a ball travels, perhaps after traveling 3 times around the table, to a final destination within 2 inches of a given spot on the table. A stiff cue permits developing that touch better than a flexible cue. Additionally, carom billiards uses much more controlled extreme english than pool. Being able to repeat the effect of a given english is vital to a carom player; a stiff shaft, which flexes less and absorbs less energy in the hit, permits that repeatability. Among carom players, the choice of cue length, weight, and tip is driven by the specific game, from the very light cue normally used in the small games, straight-rail and balkline, to the slightly heavier cues used for 3-cushion. The emphasis on stiffness is generally constant. Pool players often regard carom cues as clunky, unattractive implements at best. Those who had the good fortune to attend the Carom Corner Event at the Tacoma Elks over the 18-19 May weekend, and watch the Inimitable Raymond Ceulemans at play may have revised that opinion.
The tournament produced some fantastic low inning games. Sang Chun Lee finished 40 points in only 9 innings for a 4.444 best game of the tournament against Habraken. This is believed to be a US record for a 40-point game. Habraken finished 40 points in 12 innings and Ceulemans played two consecutive games finishing 40 points in 12 innings. Sang Lee had no less than three runs of eleven including eleven-and-out in his record breaking nine-inning game. Ceulemans and Piedrabuena also had runs of eleven. Twenty-four players participated in the qualification rounds in three groups of eight. The final was a twelve player round robin. The Tacoma Elks was a fantastic venue for the tournament. The five Verhoeven tables were in excellent condition and the fans were enthusiastic. Note: Final matches were played to 40 points. Matches played between Blomdahl, Ceulemans, and Lee were played to 50 points. RESULTS FINALS Total Total High Best Grand Win/ Prize Name Points Innings Run Game Avg. Three Balls in Three Pockets This trick shot is the test shot before you set up the Miller Lite Beer commercial shot that Steve The MIZ Mizerak made so famous. Place balls as shown. Ball B sometimes needs to be adjusted up to ½ to a full ball back from the tip of the side pocket as shown. Don t forget to move ball A the same distance as well. Some of the reasons are: rail height, how old or dirty the balls are, type of cloth used, humidity, straightness of the rail, etc. The cue ball should be about twelve to sixteen inches from ball A and about three inches off of the rail. With a moderate hard stroke hit the cue ball with high left English. Aim so that the cue ball hits ball A 1/3 full on the right side. Ball A will go into the corner pocket, ball B will bank across the table into the side pocket and the cue ball will go three rails and pocket ball C in the corner pocket. This shot looks impressive but its not a hard shot. I hope you enjoy this one.

Whitesell Has His Day from: Clay Skidmore
Spokane, Washington, May 4-5, 2002 On the weekend of May 4-5 McQ s Billiards held another edition of our class B 9-ball tournament. Once again the event attracted a sold out field of 64 competitors, and there were plenty of spectators to watch the action. Mike Shannon, making his first trip over from Seattle in a few years, made the best of it by working his way through a very tough bracket. After an opening round win over Donna Totten 7-5, Mike went on to defeat Bob White 7-4, C.C. House 7-4, Tony Etchechoury 7-4, Jeff Jimenez 7-1, and Mike Gordon 7-2 to claim the drivers seat. Mike was the early pace setter. But on derby weekend there was a horse coming on the outside. And down to the stretch they come. It s the Umatilla Gorilla Jeremy Whitesell !!! After an opening round defeat to Jeff Jimenez 4-7, Jeremy was sent to the B-side. He then went on to beat Adam Scarpelli 7-1, Nick Lopez 7-4, Rick Adams 7-3, Lyle Redthunder 7-6, Bruce Albert 7-4, Gary Scola 7-5, Mary Hopkin 7-4 (who was also our top lady finisher), Jeff Jiminez 7-5, Scott Chandler 7-0, and Mike Gordon 7-3 to reach the finals. For those not counting Jeremy was riding a 10 match win streak and he wasn t done yet. After edging out a close 7-5 win in the first set. Jeremy left little doubt in the second. Taking control early he cruised down the lane and won going away 7-2 to cap a 12 match winning streak. Very impressive Jeremy. Thanks again to those that played, and to the few players that got shut out at the window. Take my advice, pay our entry early to avoid missing out. Until next time enjoy the races. Jeremy Whitesell $800 + $320 side pot 1st nd 2 Mike Shannon $500 Mike Gordon $350 3rd Scott Chandler $250 4th Jeff Jimenez $150 5th Joe Horner $150 Tony Etchechoury $100 7th Mary Hopkin $100 + $40 Top Lady 9th Gary Scola $75 Jason Defillipis $75 John Joplin $75 Scott Gracio $75 Rob Batorson $40 13th Dana Aldridge $40 Tom Blair $40 Bruce Albert $40
Tony Finds Gold at McQ s from: Clay Skidmore
Spokane, Washington April 27-28, 2002 On April 27th 28th, McQ s played host to 48 class C 8-ball players. The field again was a sell out and it was also very competitive. As always the new faces make me nervous but there didn t seem to be anyone too out of line. Of course there is always someone that plays good cuz someone has to win, and like I always said a 140 bowler can bowl a 220 game. You just never know when it s going to happen. Tony Golden making his first appearance at McQ s held off a strong challenge from Tim Mandelas. After a close 4-5 defeat to Tim in the first set, Tony turned the tables and won the second set 5-4. I am still seeing a lot of players that try there hearts out and are still a little overmatched in the C tournament, so I am planning to do a class D tournament next fall. Thanks again to all that played and I ll see you next time. Tony Golden $425 + $70 side pot 1st Tim Mandelas $300 2nd 3rd Cale Russell $200 th Brian Smiedy $125 4 Kathy Garrett $75 5th Melissa Wilson $75 C.C. Table Talk with Mary Price
Forever June June. That month of the longest day and the sweetness of early summer. That month of attrition in the pool ranks when players chase smaller balls on larger, softer fields of green. When shooting means trap or pigeons. When shark-bait takes on a whole different meaning and table runs are between picnic benches. Summer the time for regrowth of energy and enthusiasm in preparation for the autumn onslaught of Tournament Time and league-filled winter. Many of us take these months off from shooting pool, believing the break is good for our game. We go off to let the sun shine into different rooms. And for some it works well. I have actually given up pool for a chunk of time, personally testing this theory. I was highly successful for 9 whole days, then the memory-echo of the clacking balls and feel of my cue drove me to the nearest table! How many driving passions can any one mind sustain? Perhaps for some, the passion is actually the competitive nature of the games played. Competition igniting the coals of the soul, creating room in the psyche and releasing energy for more than one consuming activity. For me, pool is more like picking up the hot coal - can t let go and the burning stays with me always. I was recently watching a commercial video of pro players, commentated by one of the top women pros. She excitedly awakens each day because she knows she will get to play for x number of hours. She happily goes to sleep each night because she knows when she wakes up she ll get to play again. This is driving passion; the burn that stays, combusting with firestarting competition. For this deep enduring grand obsession, there is only one kind of green field, and the passion becomes the greenhouse for growth. Happy longest day, and may the sun grow your spirit in many shades of green. OTB Mary Price, roamer of greenfields.

The Pocket Lathe
June 2002
Reviews
For the shark in all of us TM
System
This is not a high-speed lathe as the name may indicate. The slow rotation creates a very nice nickel or dime shape. You have to shape your tip to begin the lathe-like shaping. The reason is your tip is probably flat. It leaves a perfectly shaped tip. This is one of the best tips I have had. From the slow motion of your hand spinning your shaft while shaping the tip with the sandpaper, you wouldn t expect any progress to be made. But within less than a minute you will begin to see the nickel or dime shape curvature that is consistent as you eyeball the tip. Smooth and ready for play. Use of the Pocket Lathe TM System will reduce tip loss by correctly shaping your tip with minimal leather removal. The system is available with 80, 100, 120 and 150 grit paper that will shape/scuff any hardness tip uniformly. A must have for tip shaping. The only better way to shape your tip is on a real lathe. For information on this product, contact On The Break by email at: cheeses4u@aol.com or by calling toll free 1-877-285-3099.

Justa Bridge
TM
At first look it would appear to be lobster-like claws. Lightweight machine polished aluminum for extra smooth edges, that comes in black anodized or gold plated. The slip lock has a soft rubber lined couplet to prevent rocking or tilting. After putting on any shaft 13mm or less, you can adjust with the hand you are holding the shaft while positioning your shooting cue. Gives you angle, height and flexibility for your bridge. If you don t have this in your arsenal and your opponent does advantage, your opponent. A must see and use to appreciate. Out classes every bridge out there. See ad on page 4

Pocket Tracer
TM
If you ve tried the diamond or criss-cross systems and find them too complicated, the Pocket TracerTM will train you in bank shots and aiming. The base sits along the cushion on a keel , the player lines up the views of pocket/ball (bank) or cue ball/ target ball (kick) on the crosshair, that s all there is to it. A bright fluorescent orange tip on the keel marks the computed impact point. It is credit card size, fits in your pocket or case and is easy to use with immediate results. The technology is precision plastic optics much better than mirror based products on the market. The Pocket TracerTM also works for kick shots. If you are having trouble with bank shots or kick shots, the Pocket TracerTM will help you whether you are a beginner or advanced player. A must have training tool.

away. The Best of Pekin Illinois quickly cleared their balls from the table but scratched on the 8-ball. During the second game Nester broke again, leaving an open table. The Pocket Chalkers played cautiously. Martin scratched on her last stripe giving the Pocket Chalkers control of the table. The Best of Pekin Illinois redeemed themselves during the second game, making the match 1-1. After the fourth game the match was dead even at 2-2. The Best of Pekin Illinois pulled ahead after the fifth game. Martin and Franklin cleaned up their table, not letting either Pocket Chalker a chance at the table. Franklin called the side pocket for the win. The final game of the match was extremely steady. Martin made a beautiful break, scattering the balls, and claimed the stripes. Each player took his time with each shot.

The Best of Pekin Illinois were behind by four balls; they played their strategy, and showed great displays of teamwork to catch up. Martin pocketed the 8-ball in the corner to win. The match ended 4-2. It was a very good game, they outplayed us, said Nester, but everyone out here was very nice we had a lot of good matches, the event was extremely organized and was run very smoothly. We don t play together back home, but I think we matched up well out here we were very calm and I think that contributed to our success, we will be back next year! said Syacsure. Vegas, I originally had qualified with another gentleman, but we later found out that he did not have enough match scores to qualify to go out to Vegas, so I had to find another partner. I made a list of people I thought I would shoot well with; then my friend said I should ask Jerry, because we shoot and think alike. I really did not know him, but called him up and he was excited to come out here. We filled the last spot in the nation! It was funny, because people and even our League Operator said you guys don t shoot together, how will you go out there and compete? but I think our team worked out great! said Syacsure. Nester and Syacsure walked away with
$2,000. Martin was completely exhilarated after the Finals round. I just wanted to come out here and play our best, said Martin, but we got out here, our games just clicked and we made a great team, I am very proud of Scott and the way he played! We took it one game at a time, we didn t look too far ahead, each match we focused on the game at hand, said Franklin, and it worked. Scott and I play together on a League, I like his playing style and his positive attitude, he plays smart and handles himself well , said Martin, the way we clicked really had a lot to do with being successful. Denise dedicated her game to her Uncle Joe, who passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002 while she was competing in the tournament.

How can I find a quality table? Is there a consumer s report that compares tables by make and model?
A
I am not aware of any brand-to-brand billiard table comparison but many of the web sites supported by manufacturers will have information on the construction of their particular tables. With a little information at hand you can do some research to compare. I will try to address some of the key things to look for. First thing probably goes without saying, all tables are not created equal. You must ask yourself what you really want this table to do. Is it entertainment for the kids, are you looking for an heirloom or something in between? How the table is constructed and with what materials should dictate your price. Low priced tables, those under $1500, are going to have lots of particle board, brackets, faux finishes and either no slate or thin slate. If you want a table for the kids to play on and don t care what happens to it after they fly the coup then by all means go ahead. Don t look for a table that is going to hold it s value or even a level at this price range. Many companies will not service or recover these tables so be careful. Between $1500 and $2500 it gets more difficult. The trade off in materials and workmanship gets more confusing. Some parts of the table may be particle board, others plywood and still others solid wood. Slate will very in thickness and type. Finishes may be laminate or veneer. You are not going to find a solid wood table at this price, so look closely. Look for a table that has the body completely constructed, not one that has to be put together from pieces. The only parts should be the legs, rails/pockets and slate. Every place that a bolt goes should have something sturdy to hold onto. Plywood is preferable to particle board. The thicker the slate the better and three piece is better than one piece slate. The next level is almost as confusing but between $2500 - $3000 dollars you can hope to see more solid wood, especially in the structural parts of the table. You can get a table made completely from solid hardwood with furniture finish quality although it may not have a Big Name logo on it. Many of these tables are just as good and play just as well as the Big Names. For most folks this is where you want to be. How good a deal you get may depend on where you are and what the market is in your area. In our area we can offer a completely solid maple table with a 1" three piece slate delivered and set up with good quality cloth and accessories in this price range. Other suppliers may have to ship farther or pay more in overhead, etc., so remember that this is a guideline and not a rule. At this level and beyond you should look for a body that is solidly constructed with solid wood cross members in the body. They should span both the length and the width of the table. The slate should have wood backing on it to rest completely on the interior body structure. The slate should be 1", three piece, oversized slate. No matter what you have heard, 3 piece slate is better. The rails should be solid wood and bolt directly to the slate. You should be able to get diamond inlays of mother of pearl or such, not plastic buttons. Pockets should be leather and not plastic. Finally, the cloth should be at least a 21 oz. 75/25 wool/nylon blend. Beyond the $3000 - $3500 range you are going to be paying for the extras; the name, prettier pockets, extra carving, fancy wood, fast cloth and custom or one of a kind type tables. The best advice I can give you is to go shopping, compare these items from table to table. Make sure you ask if installation is included. What kind of accessories and cloth are included. Do they have guarantees and stand behind their install? How much experience do their installers have? Looking at a web site? Make doubly sure you ask these questions of the online resellers. There is a lot of false information on some of the so called wholesale sites. Get your info in writing! Thanks again, Leo

Open 9-Ball Championship May 12 - 18, 2002 Riviera Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV Las Vegas, Nevada The finals of the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships were held today before a packed house. The day began with the women s division final in which Karen Corr met undefeated Vivian Villarreal in a quest for the coveted title. The match between the two women was a circus of errors and mis-cues normally unseen in a championship match. The match began with an even Charlie Williams exchange of the lead between Ms, Villarreal and Ms. Corr - with neither playing up to their full potential. With the score 3-3, a mis-cue on the seven ball by Vivian in the seventh game seemed to be the turning point of the match for Karen. After Karen took the match to 6-4, it looked like Ms. Villarreal would not get back to the table since Ms. Corr had the final break. But a missed shot on the seven ball by Karen had Vivian jumping out of her chair in hopes of a rebirth. She sank the seven and was in great position on the nine for the game, but rattled it in the pocket. As all hope was dashed for Vivian, Ms. Corr rose to finish the match. Vivian was overcome with emotion in disappointment. Having played strong all week and surviving undefeated, she entered the final feeling confident of a win. She said, I came to this tournament feeling like I was going to win. This was a very tough loss.
Miss Corr was very gracious in thanking the sponsors and crowd and said she had dreamed of winning this match since losing in the finals in 2001. In contrast to the women s final, the men s final match was fast paced and almost flawless. Undefeated Charlie Williams met Tony Robles in a battle for the title. Neither opponent had ever won a major title event on TV. The two men are best of friends and began the match Karen Corr by staring each other down, and then giving each other a good luck hug before lagging for the break. Williams won the lag and began a match that resulted in an even exchange of points on the board until Tony failed to make the three ball in the eighth game to make the score 4-4. Mr. Williams ran the next two racks in record speed before Tony would run one more rack in less than two minutes time making the score 6-4. With the break belonging to Charlie while on the hill, he was able to get to the table and run the last and final break. As he sunk the last shot, his joy overflowed! His first major title! His opponent his best friend, but always a true gentleman, Tony Robles congratulated him, hugged him and raised Charlie s arm for the crowd - truly happy for his friend. Watch for the broadcast of all taped matches on ESPN.

The B Division for the Men was a tight match again. Dave Brewer of Bozeman, also playing in the Open VNEA Leagues. Dave was on the point and had to be beat twice. He was pitted against Joe Palm from Malta and Joe ended up winning the first set. Now going into the final set Dave jumped out to an early lead 2-0, only needing one more game. Dave broke ran down to the 8-ball and hooked himself. He kicked at the 8-ball, hit it but did not make it in the pocket. Joe ran down, had a combination into the corner pocket, made the 13-ball that he called but scratched in the side, therefore giving Dave ball-in-hand on the 8-ball. Joe conceded without letting Dave shoot. So the Men s Champion on the B-side was Dave Brewer from Bozeman. On the Men s A-side the final match pitted six time Champion Jerry Kohm against Woody Roberts of Winifred, who had been beat by Jerry earlier in the day to go to the losers bracket and fought his way back through, beating Jason Tigart of Great Falls to face Jerry in the finals. The shooting was excellent on both sides, came up to a hill-hill match with Woody winning the final game. Now going into the second set Jerry jumped out with back-to-back wins. Woody breaks, a powerful snap into the rack, four balls are pocketed and so is the cue ball. Jerry takes ball-in-hand runs the table and claims his seventh title! Congratulations to all the players on their sportsmanship, their honor and their pool etiquette. The M.C.M.O.A. sponsored the 22nd 8-Ball Championship and on a personal note I was glad to see a lot of my friends that I haven t seen for a couple, three years and at least some that I hadn t seen for a year or that I only seem to see at this tournament. You can find the results also on OnTheBreakNews.com. Now for probably the most unusual turn of events of the tournament. Something that is rather difficult to believe but humorous in the same way. The first player is on the 8-ball with an extremely difficult cut into the corner pocket. The 8-ball hangs up in the corner pocket as the cue ball travels to a rail and into the center of the table. The second player picks up the cue ball and calls a foul, while saying, You didn t patch your pocket. The first player informs him it is not a foul to not patch the pocket you intend the 8-ball to go into as long as you make a legal hit, but picking up the cue ball is so Foul on you. The first player takes the cue ball, places it on the table and shoots the 8-ball into the pocket he had first intended. Game over. The second player never realizes that now the first player has fouled by pocketing the 8-ball and not patching the pocket. Although he never realized it, they both discussed patching the pocket just a few short moments ago.

Cliff Thayer Visits the Northwest By: Ken Sarge Aylesworth
Cliff Thayer, a World Pocket Billiard Legend, will be visiting the Seattle area in June. He would like to see as many of his friends and acquaintances while he is here on his trip up from Sun City, Arizona. For those friends and acquaintances that would like to see him again, Cliff will be at Harvey s Billiards in Renton on June 13, 2002 at 7:00 P.M. Even if you don t know Cliff you may want to meet this individual. He is one of a few individuals who has run over 400 balls in the game of straight pool. His two remarkable runs are 449 and 364. At age 82 Cliff is still pretty spry. Stop by and say hi to an old friend who lived in the Seattle area for many years.

Dan The Man Louie Takes Ten Ball Tournament at The Cue Lounge by: Linda Carter
Where thoughtful ideas are transformed into better results for cue sports enthusiasts 9142-44 Jordan Avenue Chatsworth, CA 91311 818.727.7966 800.388.5132 Fax 818.727.9076 Website: porper.com
Can THIS man be beaten? It seems like in any tournament he enters, he can stroll to the finish line without breaking a sweat. Even when one of his opponents displayed unbecoming and bizarre behavior, he finished like a champion. Of course, the most accurate shooter is favored to win with the shoot-out rules, since every MISS results in a ball-in-hand! Throw in the 3-foul rule and the 7-game knockout rule, which declares an early victor if they are up by 7 games, and the long races to 13, and you have a mix that favors the best shooters. Danny Louie came out on top at The Cue Lounge in Kent, WA over the weekend of April 27-28. He went through the whole tourney undefeated, with wins over Jeff Jiminez, 14-10 (Jeff actually led most of the Dan Louie match), Larry Nelson 13-8, Linda Carter 8-1, a nail-biter with Eddie Carrido 13-12, and Rich Geiler for the point, 13-10. Now all he had to do was sit back and relax and see who would meet him in the finals. That decision would be played out between Eddie and Rich. Eddie soundly defeated Rich in the semifinals 13-9, so Eddie got his rematch, but he would need to beat Danny twice to win. Eddie, a great veteran player, had reached the finals posting wins over Mike Zimmerman 13-11 and Gerry Van Scharrel 13-9, before losing to Danny 12-13. On the B side, he KO d Scott Chandler 9-1, and won against Gerry again 13-8, and Rich Geiler 13-9, before succumbing to Danny in the finals in one set, 13-9. Congratulations to both gentlemen that played so well. They (and most everyone else) have figured out the strategy for the 3-foul rule is that if you are on 1-foul, then blast the balls out...sometimes you get lucky! Honorable mentions should go to Marlon Oliveros and Scott Chandler who finished 5th in their first tries at 10-ball, Gerry Van Scharrel who had the misfortune of running into Eddie twice to finish 4th, Larry Nelson who was recovering from recent shoulder surgery and still garnered 7th, and Linda Carter, the tournament director and the only female in the tournament, who was down 3-11, and ending up winning against Sam Jones, 13-12, (at one point making the last 3 balls with tough banks), to finish in 7th place. King Cobra Billiards and the Cue Lounge are to be commended in their first joint tournament for adding $1,000 without a full field, and for providing a beautiful trophy and T-shirts. It is a gorgeous place to play and we look forward to returning for even bigger tournaments. The Cue Lounge would like to announce the addition of 2 weekly tournaments on Sundays and Thursdays, adding $100 with a $10 entry fee ($7 entry, $2 green fee, $1 break pot). Thursdays will be 9-ball at 7 pm and Sundays will be 8-ball at 2 pm, both with their own break pots. Call Stacey at the Cue Lounge for more information at 253-872-3477. Watch for King Cobra Billiards $10,000 added Labor Day Weekend Tournament. Results: 1st Dan Louie $750 + trophy + T-shirt 2nd Eddie Carrido 500 + T-shirt 3rd Rich Geiler 300 + T-shirt 4th Gerry Van Scharrel 200 th 5/6 Marlon Oliveras 100 Scott Chandler 7/8th Linda Carter OTB Larry Nelson

2002 World Pool Championship from: Matchroom Sport - 21st May 2002
Tickets Now Available Matchroom Sport are delighted to announce that tickets for the 2002 World Pool Championship are now available from the Cardiff International Arena Box Office and the good news is that as in previous years, tickets for the first eight days are FREE! The events which takes place from Saturday 13th to Sunday 21st July will feature 128 players from in excess of 40 countries competing for a prize fund of US$300,000 (approx £205,000) and in addition to 63 hours of live coverage on Sky Sports in the UK, the World Pool Championship will also be broadcast live in over 60 other countries around the world. Leading the Welsh challenge will be 2000 World Snooker Champion Mark Williams who will be looking to improve this time out after failing to progress past the group stages last year. Rob McKenna, Cardiff s 8-Ball king is impressing more and more at 9-ball and with a big hometown crowd behind him, will be favoured to reach the knock-out stages. Finally, Penarthbased Dominic Dale, the self-styled Spaceman , has gone out on a limb and vowed to win this year s championship after having a terrible time at the World Snooker Championship in April. In addition all the big names of world pool will be at the CIA including defending champion Mika Immonen, snooker legends Steve Davis and Jimmy White, previous winner s Efren Reyes and Fong Pang Chao as well as American stars like Earl Strickland and Johnny Archer. Tickets for the final which takes place on the evening of Sunday 21st July, are priced at £12 each and like all tickets for the event are available from the CIA Box Office on 02920 224488 or in person Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, Since 1999 this event has been a resounding success in Cardiff. We always endeavour to bring the very best players in from all four corners of the globe and in return we get fantastic support from the people of South Wales. This year we will be repeating the Pool Village where punters can get the chance to play themselves, often against the stars of the show and there will be a host of other attractions to keep people entertained throughout the day. Plus, it s all free! OTB

8-Ball Shorthorn Tavern from: Gene Baker, Tournament Director
Omak, Washington May 10-12, 2002 Shorthorn had a pretty good turnout for an 8-Ball Tournament held May 10, 11, 12. The warm up on Friday had sixteen shooters with Dave Williams coming out on top winning $75, 2 nd Sal Sal Saenz $45, 3 rd Wedo from Pentilton, BC and Gail Stensgar receiving top woman $10. In the 8-Ball on Saturday and Sunday we started with twentytwo shooters in a race to 5 setup. Roy Garza from Yakima, WA went from start to finish not losing a set to capture the first place money of $236.
Second place went to Nick Kruger of Pentilton, BC who played Dave Tice of Lake Wenatchee in the previous match, which went 4-4 before Nick got the win in the finals. The play was real close going down to the wire again 4-4 before Roy finally scraped out the win with a 5-4 victory. Everybody was a real sportsman. It was the easiest tournament I had the pleasure of running. Congrats players and thank you from Ron and all the help. $236 Roy Garza, Yakima, WA 1st nd 2 $177 Nick Kruger, Pentilton, BC 3rd $118 Dave Tice, Lake Wenatchee, WA 4th $ 59 John Burling, Pentilton, BC Top Woman Tina Teeskatuski
