Karen Chalks Up Las Vegas was again a thrill for me, but this time more so. I was privileged with a press pass to see both pro men s and women s events that were held by the Billiard Congress of America at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, and also during ESPN filming of both events. Watching these players in person was a thrill after watching them on TV all these years. (See page 19 for the story)

My first trip to the BCA Nationals started Monday, May 12th. I was very impressed by the professionalism and the wide array of tournament selections the players were offered, as well as the two pro 9-Ball events. I had a lot of fun, made some new 1st Place Women s Open Team friends, as well as saw some old California Cue T s, CA ones. This experience I will cherish (BCA Results (See BCA Resultscontinued page 18)on page 20) and look forward to next year.

Dealing Aces was a strong favorite. They had earned the 2nd highest total points in one 16 week session, 82-Points. With Jim attaining the Only 2nd Super Six rating in the history of the W.S.P.L.;
all eyes were on him! Jim s match went well, and his team managed to reach a Sudden Death 6th Match, with the Time Out s Nice Rack Team! But, as fate would have it, the Time Out Team won the flip, and chose the skill level of 3 to play the Sudden 1st Place Division Team Captains (Back Row) Bill Winters, Dan Firth, Crystal Ross, Dusty Cline, Death Match, and the Time Out was very lucky to move T.J. Foreman (Front Row) Dale Wilhite, Dana Pelow on to the next match!! On the other side of the top half of the tournament board, The Player s WILD CARD TEAM Pick A Card also went to a Sudden Death Match, but they were more fortunate, and pulled it off. This set the stage for the 2nd possibility of a WILD CARD TEAM winning the complete Titleholders! They won their 2nd match, and received a couple of breaks, and were now the Crowd Favorite Underdog. Especially because of their low key attitude, and because they have the very popular (SVP) player Mr. James Burton on their team. At age 73 James Burton is very active in the W.S.P.L., and helps carry teams who have temporary emergencies by playing matches for their teams. But his main team on Wed. is Team Pick A Card at Players Casino. Another Players Casino team was doing well also, Team Cue Crew, captain Dana Pellow had won their *** SVP Player *** 1st match; and was taken to a Sudden 1st Place Div. & 2nd Place Titleholders Death Match in their afternoon match. Mr. James Burton They set history in the W.S.P.L. by setting the stage for the 1st All Ladies skill level 3 Sudden Death Match between Karen Leitner and Crystal Ross. This was the turning point where M.V.P.s are made. After losing her 1st two matches, Crystal Ross rose to the challenge of playing a Sudden Death Match for ALL of the marbles, and having the chance to take her team to the next day FINALS!! Karen had 3rd Place beaten her in their Kip Miller & The O Gallagers O Gzzz regular match, but NOT in Sudden Death. Crystal won 2 games straight, her team was coming back on Sunday Morning!! Note: The W.S.P.L. (AKA-PARTY LEAGUE) managed to live up to their reputation on Saturday morning and afternoon, by setting a sales record at the Carriage Square Sports Bar. CONGRATULATIONS , But we ll be having a meeting about the FACT that TEAMS DO need to show up for the next day s matches! Sunday morning saw the beginning of the FINAL MATCHES, the Q z Team N.A.D.S. were doing it the old fashion way; they were EARNING it. The 1st match that they were challenged to play came against the 2nd place State Champions O Gzzz. The O Gzzz were on a roll after winning 8 straight matches, and sweeping the first day like the veterans that they have become! But Fate had caught up to them, and they pushed their 3rd match to Sudden Death, and lost it in a dramatic sweep by Bill Cruz. That left the up and coming Finals for the N.A.D.S. and they were REEAADY! They ALL had the confidence level of Crystal Ross and Bill Cruz, to face THE WILD CARD team of Players Casino! Again, the turning point came to Crystal Ross s Match, but this time she
would have to face a skill level of a 4.1½, and it would be her biggest challenge! But, again Crystal rose to the match that would in the end, be the turning point of the Final Team Match. The match started off slow with Ralph Kuehnel winning the 1st game. Crystal managed to get down to the last ball with Ralph, and Ralph barely missed his
ball in the side pocket, but it left the door open for Crystal, and she took the chance to HEART, and put the 8 in for her 3rd consecutive match win! CONGRATULATIONS , Crystal, you earned the M.V.P. At last 8-Ball has come to an end. We played for 25 weeks with 26 teams and around 155 players. It was a fight from the start between the Q street Coots and the Alibi Misspent youth. Changing places for 1ST several time thought the season. The Coots held on and in the end finished 1ST.
Trophies were given at our payout tournament at SONNY S TAVERN In Springfield. We had a blind draw scotch doubles with 40 players 9-Ball race to 3. It was a blast and everyone had a great time. Julie Stallings and Andrena Browne were lucky enough to draw each other getting in the lead and staying there until the end. Last match Dan Madden and Sue Sorensen came from the loser s side to beat them the first match. The second match went hill hill with a missed 9-ball and Julie and Andrena went in for the kill taking first place.

How did you do on last month s follow shot? Was it easier or harder than the draw shot? Now you know which one you need to work on. Well this month we are going to explore one of the harder Disciplines Bank/Kick. My first four articles on Artistic Pool were from the four easier Disciplines. The four easier Disciplines are performed on the first day of our two day, North American Artistic Pool Continental Qualifier for the World Championship. Starting this month I ll be covering the four harder Disciplines that are performed on the second day, Bank/Kick, July Stroke, August Jump, and September Masse. One of my greatest accomplishments is that I hold the World Record for: Most points scored for the four hardest Disciplines of Artistic Pool (Masse, Jump, Stroke and Bank/ Kick), for all continental qualifiers ever held. I set this record in October 2001 during the North American Continental Qualifier held at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. Onto this month s shot that had a Degree of Difficulty, (D.O.D.) of 6. Object ball letter coincides with corresponding pocket letter. To set this shot up position the object ball B in the center of the table. The cue ball is placed on the vertical centerline, plus one diamond segment from pocket B. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to B ball. Object ball B will bank to cushion #4, then to #2 cushion, then back to #4 and finally be made in B pocket. A scratch is allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. I use a touch of low and a lot of left English on this shot. I aim the cue ball at ball B for approximately a ¾ ball aim. On this shot you will use a hard stroke. Ball B travels 14 diamonds of distance before being pocketed. If you over cut ball B it won t reverse back to cushion 4, so pay close attention to what the object ball does. Aim to hit ball B fuller if it doesn t reverse, or use a little more left English. Next month s shot will be a D.O.D. of 7 from the Stroke Discipline.

The Perils of English By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
Side spin on the cue ball (or English as we call it) can be a very useful tool for positioning the cue ball. It comes with three major problems that you should be aware of when you re practicing your spin shots so you will understand why you re missing some of your shots, and what you need to consider consciously or subconsciously when you play these shots. In the shot diagrammed, we need to pull the cue ball to the left off the cushion, and the easiest way is with left English. The first problem when playing a shot like this is that the cue ball doesn t start out along the line of the stick. Instead it starts out at an angle away form the side where you apply the English. This is shown with the exaggerated arrow to the side labeled squirt which is what this phenomenon is called. Sometimes people refer to this as deflection , but it is actually the cue stick which deflects while the cue ball squirts. The second problem is that the cue ball doesn t travel in a straight line to the object ball, but instead swerves or curves to the left, again shown by the Bob Jewett exaggerated curved line. The curve is in the opposite direction, so it might actually cancel the effect of the squirt. A third problem arises when the cue ball hits the object ball. Instead of driving the object ball straight away from the cue ball, the side spin grabs the object ball a little and pulls it to the side. Each of these aspects of side spin can be more than large enough to make you miss a shot, and each of them has more or less effect depending on the speed, spin and distance of the shot. Squirt increases as you use more English. If you have a table-length shot, and use a lot of side, you might miss the object ball completely even though you were aiming for a full-ball hit. Squirt also changes for different shaft designs, and both Predator and Meucci Cues have been very active in working to reduce this problem. Swerve is affected by several other things. It goes up as more spin is used, but stick elevation and the use of draw will also increase the amount of curve you see. Since the curve takes time to develop, if you shoot hard, swerve is reduced. Most players elevate more than they need to, and all players elevate the stick on nearly every shot. Getting the stick flatter is a good way to reduce the guess work when using side spin. Some players try to use side spin to put the object ball in the pocket, but this is almost never necessary. There are a few situations in which you need to swerve a little around a blocking ball or to throw the object ball into the needed line, but these are quite rare and for most shots, the added complication of the three problems listed above should warn you away
from any needless spin. Keep it simple. To practice spin shots, set up a shot like the one shown, and see whether you can get the cue ball to A, B or C. You will need to set the object ball up in the same place each time because on this shot, the angle of entry to the pocket makes a big difference in how you can manipulate the cue ball. I think you will find that draw combined with left English will get the best results. Start with the cue ball close to the object ball within six inches and gradually work it back. Try varying the speed and the amount of spin and see how the three factors vary. And remember to chalk!

Embarking on its first foray into the billiards industry, Benator Publishing a leading calendar manufacturer has entered into a three-year agreement with the Women s Professional Billiards Association to create and distribute licensed WPBA Facts & Fun® Calendars. Benator Publishing is a licensee of NASCAR and the PGA Tours and has created similar calendars for both associations. Under the terms of the agreement, Benator Publishing will design and manufacture a monthly wall calendar and daily desk calendar. Building on the theme WPBA, the wall calendar will feature full color photographs of the touring professionals, while the daily calendar will be filled with facts and fun relating to the WPBA, the touring professionals and the game of billiards in general. Billiards has a significant broad base across the United States, appealing to all age groups including children, parents and grandparents, says Benator. Of particular interest is the growing popularity among women, he adds. Benator attributes the rise in popularity in part to the WPBA which has greatly increased the exposure of women in the sport. According to the April 2003 issue of the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association trade publication, Billiards is the 5th most popular participation sport in America. Of the more 39 million people who played billiards in 2002, nearly 15 million were women. This brings unique opportunities for reaching a wide female market that transcends race and age. The association adds, More females and children are playing billiards/pool. Pool participation is benefiting from increased TV exposure. The cocoon effect in the wake of 9/11 has benefited billiards/pool. With retail price points at $12.95 per calendar, Benator Publishing items will be distributed to selected mass and specialty retailers. Initial items will be available for preview later this fall. LIBBY, MT April 5 & 6 Libby was once again the gathering place of a good many stick yielders and would-be ball pocketers, as it was the weekend of the Kerry Resch. The Mint Bar was the primary host of the event, but we want to say thank you to the V.F.W. for allowing us the use of their two tables to have matches played; as the overwhelming support of this tournament, in only its second year with limited promotion; somewhat took us by surprise. Friday evening saw quite a few players ready to show their stuff, as many locals and out of towners cued it up at the Mint for a pair of mini tourneys (men s & women s) in a five dollar entry, race to two single elimination affair. Thirty-eight men and seventeen women were entered in the main event. The seventeen women played in a single flight, race to four, double elimination contest. The object was to survive to the final four to qualify for Sunday. The thirtyeight guys played in two flights of nineteen, the key to be one of the remaining four contestants in your respective flight and come back to battle again on Sunday with a fresh start. Sunday s play began at ten o clock a.m. and was to be a race to five, double elimination contest for the eight men as well as the final four women. Amber Johnson of Couer d Alene, ID stroked her way to the chair yet again, and awaited the outcome of Patty and Jenny s match. The Pocket in Twin Falls, Idaho hosted the Second Annual Wormo Rack em and Crack em Tournament. The April 26th Ladies Tournament at the Pastime Tavern in Oroville, WA was full of laughter, good spirits and fun. For several women, it was their first tournament, which made it even more exciting. Gai Rainsberry defeated Denise Jamison, Donna Reed, and Marge Jamison, then lost to Norma Cardin and Norma Riba to take home the third place prize winnings. Norma Riba had a bye her first match, then lost to Kathi Giles in the second. She then made an excellent comeback, winning against Judy Aguayo, Jackie Jamison, and Kathi Giles in their second meeting, and Gai Rainsberry, to take second place after losing to Norma Cardin. Norma Cardin had a perfect day, totally undefeated, winning against Judy Aguayo, Kathi Giles, Gai Rainsberry and Norma Riba to take first place. As you step to that table in a tournament or league that you have never played on before or it just began to rain or there is a big crowd in the tavern and neither heat nor air conditioning is on, you will need to change your game to fit the table. Last month we talked about short angles caused by damp or dirty cloth. (See diagram below) Try that 3 rail bank just to see how the angles are before the match. Pat Sheehan Humidity is a killer for the finesse game. In the late 60 s or early 70 s there was a straight pool match on National TV. When it got to the final match which was live from Atlantic City it began to rain and of course, the crowd began to show up. I can t remember the

players but they both had been running 90 to 100 balls. As the crowd pushed in close, they couldn t run 3 balls! The tables were covered with Chas House 25 ounce cloth which must have weighed 50 ounces with the added water. The banks wouldn t come out, balls jawed in pockets. They interviewed the players who were bewildered and complained about the cloth and the humidity. Boy, if I was only there with my iron. I ve got to say it was years before the next TV match and Mike Giger withdrew his support for the Pro tour. Please don t tell anyone, but once in a while it rains in Oregon and Washington. The humidity inside without air conditioning is 100%. No heat at night and the slate is ice cold, open the door and let in the folks, the dew point in the cloth is out of sight. Add 1 pound of sand from cue chalk in the ball tracks that runs around the perimeter of the table just ahead of the cushion tip, you have to change your game. Add a diamond or two to the short angles and really pop the cross table bank. Shoot right for the center of the pocket and little or no English. The balls are not going to slide into the pocket off the rail and rail shots are going to be tough because of the extra friction caused by the sand in the ball track. If you are in charge of the tournament you can help the play. I had a chance to compare dirty to clean to new cloth at Touche s. They have two tables that get sun all day long and look like hell after six months. The other four just get the late afternoon sun and look fine but dirty. They are all covered with Simonis 860. Dirty cloth caused the angles to be short; two diamonds short. On the 4 ½ X 9, we got three cushion contacts and ½ table, which is very slow, after vacuuming and brushing ½ diamond short and four contacts. After shampoo and conditioner, we iron and wash and wear and after a few hours check against the new cloth. The conditioned tables played 1/8 short 4 ½ table widths; new cloth with the slide on an Olhausen 1 diamond long and 5 table widths. I did the table at the Wigwam in Scappose where I live. It hadn t been long since someone else covered the table, but it played and looked real bad. When I finished it looked new and played so well I came back and played on Saturday. It was nice to play on a table and not get dirty and gritty. Folks who use the table regularly liked it too. Next trip to the Oly Club in Centralia where we covered the tables in January, but had only been brushed on a hit and miss; I trained Jessica and Eva how to do the tables. We did three in 45 minutes. They will do the other four later. Since they use Championship Titan Cloth it piles badly and was slow, very short angles. After vacuuming, shampoo, stain proof and ironing, speed and angle problem solved; Sheehan left with a vacuum full of dirt, chalk and pile. When ironing pay special attention to the ball tracks and the rack area. The iron and the moisture cause the cloth to bloom back to original, that weird looking rack area and where the balls hit the foot rail look like new. Be sure to vacuum and brush with the nap. All cloth that is on right side up is directional. You want to lay it down for good speed. The brush will tell you the direction. Rough against, smooth with the grain. Next issue the unlevel tables. The Pool Whisperer . . . . . Lance McGill Pool Is Not The Problem . . . Well, it s spring and the beginning of the slow time for pool and pool parlors. It s not just slow for pool, although it may feel that way to those of us immersed in pool and the many businesses surrounding it. All things have a season and a time. They all come with their own rhythm. Even the church and the prospect of heaven or hell has seasons! During the time when our country was new, people went to church regularly. Maybe even religiously. During these times attendance was always higher during the harsh winter months than it was in other seasons. So, it was, that during the harsh winter months, more souls were filled with the spirit and were called to a God-fearing and righteous lifestyle. The problem was that baptisms were done in the rivers and lakes in those times and those newly saved and redeemed souls had to wait until spring to be baptized. That was too long for those newly saved souls to wait so large numbers of them strayed and returned to their worldly ways. And as a result of that circumstance we now have inside baptismals. Even the very offering of eternal life was subject to the rhythms of season! What kinds of things do you think that we now see around pool because of the slow traffic flow
during fun and easy weather? I want to tell you about a tournament that I attended. It may not be enjoyable reading at first. Please get through the entire article before you pass judgment on this particular text. Last month I wrote an article entitled Mad About Pool...? , in which I discussed the anger management circumstances we often find around pool. I included strategy for defeating this problem within ourselves. I don t yet know why this is the article that received the least email response. I think this one will shatter that record. Again, please read the entire text before you begin assessing its value. The tournament was being held at a Sheraton Airport Hotel. Not only were the top players there from all over the United States, players were entered from Canada and many parts of Asia. I was there with the 2 best players in the room, one a world champion at the time and the other would later win a world title. Because I was with them I was privy to a lot of inside conversations and
situations. And, as I have seen at many pool tournaments, before we could even enter the venue, there was fighting in the parking lot. A student and his instructor! Before the men that I was with could change into their tournament clothes they got involved in 2 ugly and pathos filled conversations. One was with a man that wanted to discuss how to handle another man in the tournament that drank uncontrollably and beat his wife often. The second conversation does not warrant repeating and was directed at one of the men that I was with. I know the man that both of my friends learned from and he is an extraordinary and kind man. This person only came over to repeat rumors that he had heard. So then, the people standing around hear it and hold it as truth. (mostly because they hear bits and pieces.) So when they meet this man they already have an inaccurate and negative view of him and he stands little chance of ever being known to them. Now the
tournament begins and there is an argument, a loud one that something is fishy about the draw. The 2 players were unevenly matched because someone tampered with the match-ups. After that match finally began and began with the alleged tampering problem unresolved, there was a fight between a spectator and the referee. One of the contestants was the referee s student and the spectator had taught the other man. The spectator thought that the referee was making biased and unfair calls. After that small battle, and some others, there came the finals. And with the finals came dispute over who belonged and how they should match-up. Things were stolen from cars, lies were passed like water bottles, wives were secretly flirted with, some smelled of alcohol, others smelled of SMOKE and on it went...in the end the men I was with won the event. Now do you recognize ANY of that above scenario? Haven t we all seen parts of it and/or all of it happen at many a pool tournament? I have and I m nearly certain that we see some and often all of it at every tournament that we attend. And so (Pool continued on page 27)

Since the first week of November, the Pastime Tavern #1 team has had only one thing in it s sights, the first place league trophy. Saturday, May 3rd, they were finally awarded that well-earned trophy. Dan Colbert, Jeff Rounds, Will Lemaster, team captain Ernie Wisdom, and substitutes Alvin Manuel and Danny Fletcher, worked very hard to reach the top. Second place went to another Pastime Tavern team, #6 Osoyoos Legion. Third was taken by the Chesaw Tavern A team, and fourth went to the Peerless Restaurant #6 team. Individual awards were given to Ralph Fitzhum Jr. for most 8 ball breaks, Ernie Wisdom for most table runs (7), Dan Colbert for high game winner - men, and Kathi Giles for high game winner - women. The North Okanogan Pool League had a total of 25 teams on its roster this past season, which made for some serious competition. These teams were sponsored by Max s Parts Plus, Fat Boy s Diner, Fao s Restaurant, The Eagles Post 3865, The Tonasket Saloon, The Peerless Restaurant, The Chesaw Tavern, and The Pastime Tavern. R E S U R R E CT I O N About the Author Dean Shane Cassem Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and

out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and
Part 4
In Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former Special Operative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles. Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. He enrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, Joe Lauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love for the game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two finds Keating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his former passion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell and old Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy at only eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cues out of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three has Keating working on his game in Sharky s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. A verbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. Later Linda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approaches Keating while he practices. The story continues . . . SMILING WITH A WARM, BUT RESOLUTE assurance, I introduced myself. Carter Keating, I said, nodding politely. Her red hair was striking, her smile warm smile and attractive. Linda, she responded, the tone in her voice dancing as though it were a melody, Linda Jo Manard.

APA NATIONAL SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS Six amateurs crowned champions in Las Vegas
From: Jason Bowman, Public Relations Manager LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (May 16, 2003) - More than $300,000 in cash and prizes was awarded to APA members at the APA National Singles Championships held April 24-26 in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. The National Singles Championships consisted of both the 8-Ball Classic and 9-Ball Shootout Singles Championships and the Jack & Jill Doubles Championship. The final round of the 9-Ball Shootout featured three championship matches, one for each skill level tier, with two shooters in each match competing for $10,000 in cash and prizes. In the finals of the Green Tier (SLs 1-3), it was Michael Richards of McCook, Neb., defeating Robert Rose of Trenton, N.J. 2517 for the championship. Richards advanced to the finals after a semifinal round victory over Charlie Mahlmeister of Casey, Ill. Rose advanced to the finals after defeating Layla Addison of Pinellas Park, Fla. Richards, who narrowly won his first two matches, said he hoped and prayed that he d make it to the finals of the event, but Michael Richards didn t really expect to. He credited his large group of friends and family who were in attendance for their support of him. Michael Mason Jr. of Indianapolis defeated Rich Denham of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 38-18 in the finals of the White Tier (SLs 4-5) for the championship. Mason Jr. defeated Scott Hudson of Richmond, Va., in the semifinal round to advance to the finals. Denham advanced to the finals by defeating Edgar Montano of Austin, Tex. This feels great. I was a little nervous, so I had to overcome that nervousness, Mason Jr. said after the victory, just before he and his friends made their way to an automobile rental agency next to the Riviera to rent a Ferrari for a night on the town! The finals of the Black Tier (SL 6-9) pitted Michael Mason Jr. defending Champion Richard Schmiegel Jr. of Saginaw, Mich., against Mike Billodeaux of Shreveport, La. Schmiegel defeated Billodeaux 75-4. Schmiegel Jr. advanced to the finals after defeating Paul Graclik of Colorado Springs, Colo., in the semifinals. Billodeaux advanced to the final round match after a victory over Tommy Hershey of Gaithersburg, Md., in the semifinal match of the Black Tier. I m loving it, said Schmiegel Jr., after repeating as Champion. All in all, I felt I performed well and shot my game. He added that it was particularly challenging trying to repeat as Champion. Each of the three Champions received a prize package worth $10,000 that included a $1,700 Viking custom commemorative championship cue, a $1,200 14K gold championship ring, a $300 Zero Halliburton Richard Schmiegel Jr. aluminum cue, an electronics package worth $1,700, a Singles Championship jacket and $5,000 in cash. In the finals of the 8-Ball Classic, three champions each took home a prize package worth $15,000 for their performances. In the Blue Tier (SLs 2-3) of the 8-Ball Classic, it was Emery Sims III of Ocoee, Fla., defeating Veda Carter of Little Rock, Ark., 3-0 in the final match. Sims III defeated Jan Smith of Brandon, Miss., in the semifinals to advance, while Carter defeated Nina Josey of Hilton Head, S.C. I d like to say it s a dream come true, but I never dreamed something like this would happen. Nerves were a challenge for me the entire time, but once I got over the jitters I shot pretty well, said Sims III. The finals of the Yellow Tier (SLs 4-5), saw Rama Ukperaj of Bellmore, N.Y. defeat Emery Sims III Peter Alvarado of Chicago 5-0 in the finals. Ukperaj advanced to the finals by defeating John Tronca of Quincy, Mass., earlier in the day in the semifinal round. Alvardo defeated Stephanie McFarlin of St. Petersburg, Fla., in the semifinals. Every match was a challenge. There was tough competition out here. This was my first national championship, I wouldn t be here if it wasn t for the support of my friends, said Ukperaj. The finals of the Purple Tier (SLs 6-7) pitted Scott Tollefson of Arvada,
Colo., against John Lehman of Orland Park, Fla. Tollefson, the Runner-Up in last year s U.S. Amateur Championship, defeated Lehman in the finals 5-1. Tollefson defeated Kerry Standridge of Decatur, Ala., in the semifinal round. Lehman advanced after defeating Nate Leemon of Peoria, Ill. You gotta love this event. Where else does it cost you $15 for a chance at $15,000! said Tollefson in reference to the event s $15 entry fee. I was up against some tough players early in the tournament, but I found my groove, got in the zone and played my best. Rama Ukperaj First place winners received cash and prizes worth $15,000. Prizes include $7,500 cash, a 14K gold championship ring, Viking custom commemorative championship cue, Zero Halliburton aluminum cue case, an electronics package and a championship jacket. Each RunnerUp received cash and prizes worth $9,000; including $4,400 cash, a commemorative Citizen watch, a Viking custom commemorative cue, a Porper cue case, an electronics package and a championship jacket. In the annual Jack & Jill Doubles Championship, held in the MiniMania Room during the Singles Championships, Barry Partridge and Laura Bendikas of Brookfield, Ill., defeated Joseph and Erin Aidukas of Bayonne, N.J. Partridge and Bendikas took home $5,000, while Joseph and Erin Aidukas received $3,000 as Runners-Up. Scott Tollefson Winning the Sportsmanship Awards were Michelle Billodeaux of Shreveport, La., wife of Runner-Up Mike Billodeaux, and Bill Carlucci of Audubon, N.J. for their outstanding conduct throughout their matches in the 9-Ball Shootout and 8-Ball Classic, respectively. T h e women s semi-final match was played Friday, May 16, 2003 between Karen Corr and Helena Thornfeldt. In the women s division, the beginning of the match started just like the men s Karen Corr won the lag, but failed to keep control of the table by playing a loose safety and Helena Thornfeldt took the first rack. Thornfeldt broke and ran out on the second rack and Karen took Steve Tipton, Tournament Director measures the lag the third making the score 2-1. Helena took a rack; Corr took a rack. But that was the end of the volley. Karen won the next two racks making the score 5-4. In the tenth rack, Helena finally brought some excitement to the match by making a jump shot to either make a two nine combo or at the very least play safe on the two ball. The safety was played flawlessly, but Karen was still able to win the game. Helena played another beautiful jump shot in the twelfth rack and the crowd exploded with excitement as it sunk the eight ball in a perfectly executed shot at the 6/8 combo, but Helena left herself a tough cut shot and couldn t finish the rack. Karen Corr took the match by a score of 7-5. The finals of the 2003 BCA Open 9-Ball championships took place Saturday afternoon and paired Allison Fisher (#1 seed) against Karen Corr (#2 seed). The women s final started off with a close lag that had to be measured by tournament director, Steve Tipton, but that was as close as it would be the entire match. With Allison winning the lag, she was poised to jump out in the lead, but after rattling the 5-ball in the corner pocket, Karen took the rack. Ms. Corr broke and ran the next rack and took the third rack from Ms. Fisher after Allison pushed out after the break. Corr broke and ran rack four and once again Allison was forced to push out after her break on rack five giving Karen a chance to run out again. In rack 6, Karen missed the shot at the 1-Ball and allowed Allison to the table, but Allison set up too close to the 3-ball to have a good angle and played safe. Karen ran the rest of the rack making the score 6-0. Rack seven finally went to Allison after several safeties and mistakes on the part of both players. Corr breaks and runs out on rack eight winning the championship for the second year in a row. She now becomes the first player to win the BCA title twice.

Mika Immonen met a very focused and determined Ralf Souquet in the men s division semifinal and was q u i c k l y reminded why Souquet is known as the Kaiser . After winning the lag, Mika failed to maintain control of the table and Ralf took the first game. Souquet broke and ran out the second rack bringing the score to 2-0. Mika took the next rack after breaking. The score was 3-1. It would be the only game Mika would win in this dominated match. Mika scratched while breaking the seventh rack and Ralf ran the last two racks and took the victory (7-1) without breaking a sweat. A discouraged and disappointed Mika packed his cue and exited the tournament arena. The men s final between Ralf Souquet (#4 seed) and Francisco Bustamante (#11 seed) proved to be much more exciting than the women s final. After winning the lag, Souquet plays safe on the 1-ball, but Francisco Bustamante hangs the same ball in the corner pocket, allowing Ralf to run the table. Bustamante breaks and runs the next rack and wins the third rack after a volley of safety plays. Racks four and five were dominated by Souquet. When Bustamante broke rack six, the cue ball flew off the table giving Ralf ball-in-hand. Souquet sets up the 1-9 combination taking the rack and running rack seven behind it, making the score 5-2. Rack eight and nine go to Bustamante after he makes a perfectly executed jump shot on the two in rack nine. The score 5-4, Souquet. Souquet runs rack ten after getting out of a safety shot by Bustamante on the three-ball. Bustamante takes rack eleven and twelve making the match hill-hill and bringing the crowd to their feet. Souquet breaks the final rack but chooses to play safe on the two-ball. Bustamante cuts the ball to the left instead of right, passing the rack to Ralf. Ralf takes full control the table and the championship in the process! Each champion departs with $15,000 and the second place finishers take home $7,500 each.

Due to copyright restrictions the United States Snooker Association is unable to publish the official rules, so we bring you an interpretation of the rules written by our snooker consultant. THE SNOOKER TABLE The rules of snooker state that a regulation full-sized table should have a playing surface of 5 feet 9½ inches x 11 feet 8½ inches. The height of the table from the floor to the top of the cushion rail officially must be between 2 feet 9½ inches and 2 feet 10½ Mark J Williams inches. The bed of the table is covered with green napped billiard cloth on which the spots for the various balls and the baulk line are marked out. The baulk line, 29 inches from the face of the baulk cushion (also known as the bottom cushion), is the line on which the spots for the yellow, green and brown balls are placed these three balls are sometimes referred to collectively as the baulk colors. From the yellow spot to the green spot is described a semicircle (radius 11½ inches) known as the D. The blue spot is positioned midway between the two center pockets. The pink spot is positioned midway between the blue spot and the face of the top cushion. And finally, the black spot is positioned 12¼ inches away from the face of the top cushion in a straight line with the pink, blue and brown spots. A room ideally needs to be a minimum of 18 feet x 24 feet to accommodate a full-sized table, though smaller sized tables of excellent quality are manufactured in various sizes for a limited room space or budget, and
they are also a great building-block for children to start learning the sport on. THE SNOOKER BALLS A set of snooker balls consists of: fifteen reds; one yellow, one green, one brown, one blue, one pink, one black (known collectively as the colors or colored balls); and one white ball (known as the cueball). Regulation size balls for fullsized tables measure 2 1/16 inches in diameter. Smaller balls are manufactured for smaller than full-sized tables, with diameters of 1 7/8, 1 3/4 and 1 5/8 inches the most popular size of balls. Though due to room constraints on the table, usually tables of 8 feet in length and below will only Kelly Fisher usually feature a set of ten redballs instead of fifteen. THE RULES OF PLAYING SNOOKER At the start of each frame a frame is the snooker term for one game or a rack the colored balls are placed on their respective spots, with the red balls placed in a triangle with the apex red ball as near as possible to the pink ball without actually touching it (see picture of the snooker table set-up to the right). The basic idea of snooker is that players play alternatively to pocket balls (referred to in the game of snooker as to pot or potting balls) to build-up a frame winning score. And when there is no opportunity to pocket a ball, make it as difficult as possible for your opponent to achieve this aim by playing defensive or what is referred to in the game of snooker as a safety shot. To build-up a score, a player must first attempt to pocket any of the red balls (worth one point each) into any of the six pockets on the table. Having pocketed a red ball, the player is then free to select and pocket any colored ball into any pocket to add to their score if more than one red ball is pocketed in the same stroke a player scores accordingly, but is free to select and pocket only one colored ball. Each colored ball is worth the following points: Yellow (2 points), Green (3 points), Brown (4 points), Blue (5 points), Pink (6 points), & Black (7 points). Please note, once a red ball has been pocketed the colored ball only needs to be nominated by a player if there is reasonable doubt to which colored ball the player is aiming for. Once a colored ball has been pocketed, unlike a red ball which stays in the pocket, it is returned to its respective spot on the table. A player can then attempt to pocket another red ball and continue the sequence to build-up their score. However, if the pocketed colored ball s spot on the table is occupied or obstructed by another ball, the colored ball must then be placed on the vacated spot of the highest valued ball and left there till such a time it is pocketed, then returning it to its spot assuming that its spot has since been vacated. In the event of all the spots being occupied, the colored ball is then to be placed as near to its own spot in a direct line toward the face of the top cushion (the cushion nearest to the black spot). Once the final red ball has been pocketed, a player again has the option of playing to pocket a colored ball. If the colored ball is pocketed, as usual

LAS VEGAS, NV Some pool players expressed an anxiety over what appeared to be a blue mark that was being left on the cue ball. Some thought it was chalk that was causing the spots, and felt the cue ball could roll off if the chalk was present. After further examination the marks were actually green, it was caused by friction or heat when the cue ball was hit, green because of the green dye in the cloth. After consulting with a couple of experts and their attempt at numerous rubbing compounds, the dye would be lightened at best. This I feel is a minor imposition compared to the plugged cue ball. After questioning dozens of pool players each one confirmed, and I have to concur, the cue ball rolled true. Truly a success. We ll have further information on the making and development of the new cue ball in future issues of The Break .

Colorado Springs, CO - A new billiard-themed TV show is in production called Hollywood On Cue. Hollywood On Cue is a celebrity-driven pool series slated to begin airing in the fall of 2003. Co-Executive Producer Cheryl Allen contacted the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) several months ago to assist in making industry contacts for sponsorships, technical support and guests. The BCA is very supportive of Hollywood on Cue, said BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff. The show will highlight billiards in an innovative format and support the BCA s efforts to make pool everybody s game. The producers recently announced their partnership with World Artistic Pool Champion Mike Massey (www.mikemassey.com). In addition to being the shows technical director, Mr. Massey will conduct the Trick Shot Challenge segment of the program. Mikes wealth of knowledge regarding pool as well as his engaging personality were two of the main reasons we pursued him so vigorously, said Executive Producer John J. Pistone. 15th Annual BCA Junior National 9-Ball Championships from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development
Colorado Springs, CO - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Junior National 9-Ball Championships are slated for July 30 - August 2, 2003 at the Michigan Union Billiards Room at the Student Union of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. A projected 150 qualified players will compete in three divisions - 18 & Under Open, 14 & Under Open and 18 & Under Girls. Participants must qualify by either winning a recognized qualifying tournament hosted in billiard rooms throughout North America between April and June 2003, or be nominated by a BCA-sanctioned junior league operator. The BCA Junior Nationals is the most prestigious event in youth billiards. Tournament champions earn the right to represent the United States at the 2004 WPA Junior World 9-Ball Championship (dates and location TBD). The WPA is the World Pool-Billiard Association, the global governing body of the sport of pool. The World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS) is the world body for pool, billiards and snooker. The International Olympic Committee has recognized WCBS as a permanent member. Additionally, cue sports made its debut as a medal sport at the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan. Jeanette Lee represented the United States well and brought home the gold medal. During the 2002 WPA Junior World 9-Ball Championship, BCA Junior National champions placed among the world s top players, with Shane Hennen taking home the 2nd place title, Tyler Strawn following in 3rd place and Michelle Rakin in 9th place. Competition at the BCA Junior National 9-Ball Championships will be conducted on 9-foot tables, but qualifiers may be held on 7', 8' or 9' tables. REYES AND KELLY ELECTED TO BILLIARD HALL OF FAME (continued from the front page)
outstanding people whose competitive skills and dedication have enriched the sport and industry of billiards. These nominees represent a diverse cross section of some of the best players and contributors in the history of billiards, he states. The 2003 ballot included five outstanding candidates: Maurice Daly (1849 - 1932), Edwin Kelly, 64, Jerome Keogh (1873-1953), Sang Lee, 49 and Efren Reyes, 49. EDWIN KELLY, 64, born in Waterbury, Connecticut, earned the nickname Champagne Eddie because of his smooth playing style and elegant attire. He entered his first tournament in 1963, placing second to Mr. Luther Lassiter on ABC television. In 1965, he won the World 9-Ball Championship. In 1966, he won both the World One-Pocket and World Straight-Pool titles. The following year, he placed second in the Invitational World Open 14.1 Championship and several months later, won the International One-Pocket title. In 1969, he won the LA Open World Pocket Billiard (14.1) title and in 1971, took both the World One-Pocket and All Around-Championships. In 1985 he came out of retirement and won the Nevada Open 3-Cushion Championship, giving him titles in four different games, in four decades. EFREN REYES, 49, The Magician , was born in Pampanga, Philippines, and was a star in his home country well before 1985, when he won his first tournament in the United States. He has been awarded the Philippines Legion of Honor, the Outstanding Filipino Award from the Jaycees and is a Gold Medal winner in the Asian Games (9-Ball) and Southeast Asian Games (Snooker). In 2001, he won the richest first prize in pool history: $163,172 in the Tokyo 9-Ball Championship. He is also a champion at Rotation and Balkline. His many wins include the 1995 Pro Tour Championship, 1995 PBT World 8-Ball, 1999 Derby City One-Pocket, 1999 ESPN Ultimate Challenge, 2000 Camel Pro 8-Ball, the 2001 Masters 9-Ball and numerous other titles from 1985 to present. His latest title is the Mid Atlantic 9-Ball Champion (January 2003). Mr. Reyes and Mr. Kelly will be honored at the BCA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, taking place at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, NV, on July 12, 2003 during the BCA International Trade Expo. ESPN STAR Sports ESPN STAR Sports to be Host Broadcaster of 9-Ball s Most Prestigious Tournament in 2004 and 2006 13 May 2003, Singapore: Asian pool fans can tune into STAR Sports over the next five years for comprehensive coverage of the biggest tournament on the 9-ball calendar. Asia s number 1 sports broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports achieved yet another programming coup with its acquisition of an exclusive multi-year broadcast and broadband deal in Asia for the World Professional Pool Championships (WPPC). The 2003 World Professional Pool Championship returns to Cardiff, Wales on July 12-20 and ESS will air a total of 59 hours of LIVE pool action on the STAR Sports channel. Together with the primetime telecast of the tournament’s Match of the Day on ESPN, World Pool Championships will reach over 57 million households live on STAR Sports and over 128 million households on ESPN. The World Pool Championships will feature 128 players from 44 countries competing for a piece of the prize-fund of US$300,000. Ten of the pool players will qualify through the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour, the only pool competition in Asia which allows players to garner points to qualify for the tournament. The Pool Players Best Source of Information
Pool Is Not The Problem we discuss those things as though there is something wrong with pool. Can you admit that before reading on? We discuss pool and especially pool tourneys in a certain way. POOL IS NOT THE PROBLEM-pool is just sitting there. You see, my friend, the tournament described above was a martial arts tournament held at the Sheraton Airport in Portland, Oregon. POOL IS NOT THE PROBLEM. When I began to write these articles there was only one point of concern for me. I have seen so many articles written and followed by rebuttals. And to me it appeared ugly, mean spirited and personal. Not only the rebuttal- the original articles also. I did not want to be involved in that. I did want to be involved in offering solutions. And that is why I risked letting all of that potential negativity and anger into my personal life. And do not be misled nor misunderstand- I am easy and even excited to be disagreed with-with that I ll move to solutions for some of the nonsense. As I constructed and typed the last sentence I had no idea what form the solution would take. What can I offer in such a short writing? Then and almost immediately it came-I ll tell you what we do and what is required at the school. (McGill s) first know this- sound communication is the way to resolve conflict. So, when communication skills are found to be lacking, conflict abounds. So, almost too simply, when there is conflict, there is also something that has not yet been communicated by one side or the other. I add that if a thing has been communicated poorly, it still awaits being communicated. First let s get some clarity about conflict. it is not infinite and undeffined. For us, there are four possible conflicts and we study ways of resolving (communicating about) each type. For clarity, here are the four possible kinds of conflict. WITH ANOTHER PERSON...WITH YOURSELF...WITH AUTHORITY.. and WITH THE ENVIRONMENT. And in that same order four easy to see examples. Another player...you dogging a shot...the room owner...something wrong with the tournament. Just knowing that there are only those four types can be of help to anyone willing to learn. You can model what follows to suit and fit your personal need. The first thing that is not allowed in the school is known as UNDERMINING. Absolutely not allowed. When someone starts to say what they believe is wrong with someone else or what they don t like about someone they are interrupted and not allowed to finish. It is suggested to them that they have that talk with the individual they are speaking of. a lot of time UNDERMINING comes in the form of a question. What s the story on Jay? As I was asked at the Midway this week. Have you asked Jay? for me is one of two possible responses. The second response being my direct suggestion, that he ask Jay. And then he began (still!) to begin listing all of the gossip and rumor. I interrupted him and said that I don t want to know. I got the opportunity to say to him that he could rest assured that I give him the same respect when someone else begins speaking to me about him in that negative and undermining manner. I congratulate the few of you that will adopt this. You will end up with fewer acquaintances and you ll be more trusted by your friends. The rest of you will remain in the undermining mode and you know why. Now, the four conflicts. For the conflict with ANOTHER PERSON: first be willing to receive their entire communication. The sooner in their communication that you find yourself interrupting them, the less skilled you are at sound communication. Then own their communication as valid. Add that information to what you already have. That does not mean that you agree. A

person would have to be pretty messed up to have conflict with you while you re listening to them. Listening is an actual skill and one that can be learned and improved upon. Listening to them takes a certain level of humility. And humility doesn t mean meek. It is simply being where you wanna be relative to a thing when
Here are the four possible kinds of conflict --WITH ANOTHER PERSON... WITH YOURSELF... WITH AUTHORITY.. WITH THE ENVIRONMENT you respond do so with compassion; have their passion along with them. for conflict with YOURSELF: simply be still and decide. The conflict is either the result of being undecided or your own knowing that you decided against your instincts. Get to a quiet part of the pool room and instead of sulking get quiet, get still and decide something. You will find some resolve (less conflict) even if you decide what later turns out to be the wrong thing! When you are in conflict with yourself you re uncertain. Get decided. For conflict with AUTHORITY: for pool players this could be conflict with a room owner, tournament director, referee and even a backer. This is a simple story about agreements. Some spoken and the rest of them being implied. Keep your agreements. In this instance your actions are the form of communication. In playing in an
owner s room or under the scrutiny of a referee, with another player and even with a backer. Communicate clearly what the rules are. Notice that it will take listening on your part to even get to making a sound agreement with an authority. This conflict is about honor, dignity and respect. Understand that merely by playing you are agreeing to spoken and implied agreements. Honor your agreements, have a dignified manner and respect authority. Remember that these are communicated though actions. for a conflict with THE EVIRONMENT: this is another area where the communication comes in the form of actions. In the case of conflicts with our environment where we cannot improve on it, we have two choices. That is to adapt or leave. Discussing what s wrong with the tables, pockets, cloth, music, noise level, lighting, temperature, food, hours, rates, an so on is completely useless toward anything positive. It s your environment and you chose it. Adapt or leave. BYE. I can t list all of the names of those that responded with questions and comments on last month s article about anger. I believe that this article responds to nearly all of that mail. I am getting a lot of angry mail because I haven t responded to questions about myself or the school in any of my articles. One of the smaller reasons for that was that I didn t want to use the articles to promote my school and certainly not to promote myself. Next month I will carefully choose a few of your McGill questions and give you elaborate answers. Claire Gauthier was hardly tested throughout the tournament, he is a very solid player, fun to watch, and everyone thought he was just a great guy to be around. The entire Canadian entourage was very pleasant and a hell of a bunch of nice guys. They may have taken the lion s share of the money home with them, but they surely spent their fair share while they were here, and all are welcome back anytime. We want to express a sincere thanks to all of the players who came out to support this tournament over the weekend and a big thank you to Brian Kair for his help and to Mark Managhan s help with the bracket on Saturday. As she was walking away she added, My instincts tell me the Brat may be in trouble. I chuckled and watched as she pranced away. Her walk pleasant and attractive. Pulling balls from the pockets, I forced my eyes to the felt, bent down and focused in on a long bank. I followed through and watched as the object ball, like a heat-seeking missile, fell deep into the lower corner pocket. Sixty-four shots later, I finally missed a shot. After that I ran thirty-nine. Maybe the Brat was in trouble, I thought. After breaking down my cue, I nudged it in the leather case, snapped down the lid and headed for the register. The case over my shoulder reminded me of the day I d beat Guillotine Coleman out of it eight years before. The Richard Black cue inside much more precious than the money I d won. Linda Jo was at a table chatting with a friend. She crossed her legs so that I saw plenty of thigh, then smiled and waved. I gestured back. How much? I asked Lilly, the cashier. She had short dark hair, was petite and dollish. Her voice squeaky, her personality warm and genuine. Lilly had had polio and had a slight limp. Three hours, Carter, she stated, like always. She waited, glowing at me like life was perfect. Digging a twenty from my pocket, I laid it on the bar and said, keep the change, Lilly. Pause. Like always. I spun around to leave, but suddenly was knocked back solidly against the bar by a stiff shoulder from Danny the Brat. Had it not been for my martial arts training, I d have retaliated without thought. Pardon me, he joked, guess I need to watch where I m going, Flanking him on both sides were two rugged-looking types. One, short and bullish, the other tall, athletic and steely. I smirked and said, true, Danny. Might run into something you can t handle. Then, without hesitation, I scooted my way to the door and left. Life at least seemed perfect and Danny the Brat wasn t going to spoil it for me. THREE WEEKS LATER. WE SAT AT A TABLE IN SHARKY S near the windows facing the street. Joe was across from me, Elizabeth to my left. Outside, the trees were dropping their leaves quickly. We had had some rain, the temperatures had been cool and for the first time in memory Fall unleashed some color in Houston. The Kids had geared up for Halloween and the houses and stores had started decorating for the occasion. Goblins were becoming vogue. Americans. Think of something to market, even if it s macabre. A brochure in my hand spelled out the rules and gave the locations of the satellite poolrooms featuring the prelims. Finals ll be in the Galleria Mall, Elizabeth said excitedly. And you ll be there, Carter. Keating, you win that tournament in the Galleria, dinner s on me. McDonald s of course. Geez, I chuckled, have to remember that. How large is the field? Elizabeth asked. Only sixty-four entries here at Sharky s, bout 2000 throughout the state, I said. I ll have to win the whole schmooze here to get to the

Galleria. Whole schmooze? Joe questioned, looking at me cross-eyed. Elizabeth laughed. Like a referee coming between two quarreling boys, she said, Carter said you ve been dating someone new lately, Joe. Joe rolled his eyes and slouched into his chair. Keating, Joe threatened, pursing his lips, puffing his cheeks, zip it up. I grinned sheepishly. Elizabeth eyed me, her grin bigger than before. Carter, she begged, who is it? The entry doors to Sharky s opened wide. I glanced up. Linda Jo walked through them, the wind followed her, blowing her hair freely about. Her form jeans were tight and accentuated the curves in her body. I pointed with my chin and eyes over Elizabeth s shoulder. She turned slowly, saw Linda, then exclaimed, well, why should I be surprised. Elizabeth s spendin too much time with you, Keating, he muttered. Hi Liz, Linda Jo greeted, smiling broadly, observing the repartee, what re these two scheming now? You re putting your life at risk, Linda Jo. Linda Jo laughed. Uh huh, your dark headed boyfriend s at fault, she said, then added, if this gets worse, we re holding him responsible. She grabbed a chair and sat down next to Joe. Hi handsome, she said eagerly, waving her hand through his hair and sporting a brilliant smile. All entrants! A voice roared through the overhead speakers and broke through the crowd noise. A hush fell over the large room. The pairings for today s matches are now posted at the bar. Chairs screeched loudly on the floor as a wave of players flooded their way to the bar. I didn t move. Joe eyed me analytically, Don t get too excited now, Keating. Scarin me boy, he said, shakin , getting nervous like you are. Give em time to clear out, I mumbled. No sense in hurrying. Elizabeth eyed me affectionately and said, you seem really comfortable with your game. Sinking back into my chair, I put my hands in my pocket and said, Ol Charley Sturgis said that winning comes where opportunity and preparedness meet. Must be Shakespeare, Joe barked dryly. Elizabeth choked lightly. Ol Charley Sturgis had lots to say, Linda Jo injected. Nod. Pushing out from the table, I rose to my feet and said, Yes, and he spent lots of time drilling it through my head. EACH MATCH WAS A RACE TO FIVE. ALTERNATE THE BREAKS, ball in hand after any foul. My first opponent was an Asian who stood five six, weighed about one-thirty-five, and had short dark hair parted left to right. As he played, he joked frequently with his three friends who cheered him on from the sidelines. A patterned black tie with gold squares hung loose from a slightly opened collared white dress shirt. About thirty, he looked like an insurance salesman spending time with friends before going home to mama and the kids. The competition seemed light but I knew that taking him for granted could spell trouble.

it is re-placed on the table, then a player must try to pocket the colored balls in strict order, into any pocket, in ascending numerical value from the yellow ball to the black ball only this time, when each colored ball has been pocketed, it stays in the pocket. The accumulation of points with a series of successful pocketed balls in snooker is called a break. The highest break you can achieve in a frame of snooker, that is managing to successfully pocket all 15 red balls alternatively with 15 black balls and all of the colored balls in order, is officially recognized as 147 and is known as a maximum break. The Snooker and the Foul Stroke At one time in a frame, a player may find that there are not enough points available on the table to overtake their opponent s score to win the frame (referred to as needing a snooker or snookers). So this is the time when the player needs to employ a tactic to try and force their opponent to commit a foul stroke, in order to gain the extra points for their score. A foul stroke in snooker can be committed in several ways and carries a minimum penalty of 4 points going to the non-offending player. The value of the penalty depends on which ball the offense was committed on; foul strokes committed on the colored balls which are worth more than 4 points are given away in accordance to their respective value. In the event of a foul stroke having been committed on more than one ball, only the points of the highest valued ball involved are given away. The term to snooker means to position the cue-ball behind another ball, thus blocking a clear path to the target-ball(s) (in snooker the target-ball(s) are referred to as the ball or balls on). This may happen unintentionally or by design by a player to try and gain those extra points to win the frame, as it forces a player to strike the cue-ball on a less direct path to the target-ball(s) with either a massé shot (usually referred to in snooker as a swerve shot) or by playing off a cushion. This position is known as a snooker or being snookered, and failure to hit the target-ball(s) is a foul stroke this tactic can also be deployed throughout a frame as a defensive safety shot. Foul Strokes can be committed with the following rule infringements: Failing to hit a ball. Pocketing the cue-ball: If the cue-ball is pocketed, the non-offending player is allowed to place the cue-ball anywhere within the area known as the D and play from then on. Pocketing the wrong ball(s): This includes pocketing a colored ball when a red ball is the target-ball; pocketing a colored ball other than the target-colored ball; and pocketing a red ball when a colored ball is the target-ball. Playing a push-shot (a legal shot in pool): A push-shot is committed when the tip of the snooker cue is still in contact with the cue-ball when the cue-ball makes contact with another ball. This can happen when the cue-ball is very close to the target-ball or when the cue-ball is touching another ball (known as a touching-ball). A touchingball must be announced by either a player or referee, and as moving a ball which the cue-ball is touching will inevitably be a push-shot, it must be played away from if the/a target-ball is touching the cue-ball, playing directly away from it is deemed a legal shot and not a foul stroke. Striking the cue-ball whilst it is still moving. Striking the cue-ball whilst any other balls are moving.
Striking the cue-ball with both feet off the floor a foot must maintain contact with the floor during a shot. Striking the cue-ball with anything other than the tip of a billiard cue which must be of at least three feet in length. Touching or moving any ball. Jumping the cue-ball over another ball unintentionally or by design (a legal shot in pool). Playing out of turn. In some situations after a foul stroke, the offending player may gain an advantage over their opponent for example, the cue-ball could come to rest in a snooker or other safe position. To counter this situation, after any foul stroke committed the offending player can be requested by their opponent to continue at the table. However, if the non-offending player is snookered on the target-ball(s), that is the player cannot be judged to be able to strike the cue-ball to hit both sides at the same time of the object-ball (though please note that you cannot be snookered on a particular target-ball by another target-ball), the player is allowed to nominate any ball on the table as their target-ball (known as a free-ball). If the free-ball is the pocketed, it will score only in accordance as the original target-ball in theory, before any red balls have been pocketed, if a player is awarded a free-ball there is a possible break of 155 on, though this is not recognized as the maximum break total. Other rules to take note of as regard to the free-ball are: it is permissible to pocket a target-ball using a free-ball in a combination shot (referred to in snooker as a plant, but its much more common use is for pocketing red balls in a combination); and also a player may not snooker their opponent behind a free-ball, except that is when only the colored balls pink and black remain on the table. However a player may use a free-ball to snooker their opponent behind another non-target ball. Also, if a player is deemed by the referee to have not come close enough to making contact with the target-ball(s) from a snooker, then the referee will give the option to their opponent to have the cue-ball, and any other balls if necessary, replaced in their original positions. The shot is known as a miss and will be called along with a foul stroke by the referee (a miss however will not be called if any player requires a snooker or snookers at that moment in the frame), and the player must then attempt the shot again until contact is made with the target-ball(s), or the referee deems the player has made an exceptional attempt at making contact with the target-ball(s) in calling a miss, the referee will usually take into consideration the size of the target balls such as a cluster of reds, and the pace at which the cue-ball was struck. And when a player is not snookered and fails to hit the target-ball(s), a foul stroke and a miss will automatically be called by the referee. Three misses of this kind will result in the automatic forfeiture of the frame this section of rules however is much more stringently enforced in professional and top amateur level snooker. The Start of a Frame The break-off is the opening shot played in a frame of snooker. The player who has the break-off is allowed to place the cue-ball anywhere within the area known as the D, and play for the red balls. As it is extremely difficult to pocket a red ball from this shot, it is usual practice for a player to try and return the cue-ball back to the baulk area (preferably to the baulk cushion or behind one of the baulk colored balls) as a safety shot. The End of a Frame A frame is technically still alive until only the black ball remains with the cue-ball on the table. Once this situation has been reached, the player who is more than 7 points (the value of the black ball) behind has lost the frame I believe it was decided in the 1970s that it was deemed unsportsmanlike play to try and gain points from a foul stroke on the final black ball. Of course, some frames are closely fought and a player may need to pocket the final black ball to win. This is known as a black ball game, and the player who pockets the black ball or whose opponent commits a foul stroke on it wins the frame. If the scores are level once the final black ball has been pocketed at the end of a frame, the black ball is replaced on its spot and the players spin a coin to decide who will place the cue-ball in the area known as the D, and play from then on.
