Jesse Allred Takes Cadillac Island Casino Open

Article by Mike Jensen

Upsets were the theme as fifty players came to the April 29 &30 monthly open 9-ball tournament at the Cadillac Island in Longview Washington. Jesse Allred from Vancouver, WA. lost his first match to Pat Shumacher, and plowed through the one loss side to beat Pat Vise from Tacoma, twice to win the tournament. Pat Vise went through the winner side, by defeating Scott Chandler, Troy Vanwinkle, Ivan Doty, Lee Remmers, Eddie Mataya, and Ed Hobbs to win the point. Jesse on the one loss side had wins over Gary Jennings, Andrea Maes Sense, Jim Boyce, Troy Vanwinkle, Mike Zimmerman, Lee Remmers. Frank Rocha, J.D. and Ed Hobbs to face Pat in the finals. Big stories of the weekend were Ed Hobbs playing for the point and a strong third place finish his best to date at the Cadillac Island. Good job Ed. The other big story was “the Giant Killer”, Eddie Mataya with wins over Glenn Atwell, and Mike Zimmerman only to lose a close one to Pat Vise and then get put out by J.D. for a fifth place finish. Thank you to all the players for making each tournament special. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Lower Columbia Women’s Pool League

An Old Game Made New in Town #5 Shotze’s in Everett completed its 5th in-house 9-ball league with the singles tournament on May 6th and 7th. The league was changed back to (3) member teams but to accommodate all the players, (2) 8-boot tables were added so there was room for all (14) teams. This league has grown in leaps and bounds. We are trying to find ways to enlarge this league

(l to r) Marie Brenner, Becky Mowdy, Malynne Myers, Kathi Giles

From September to April many women in the Longview-Kelso, WA area spend their Tuesday nights playing 8 ball in the local bars and taverns. Twelve teams played this past year and the battle was very competitive. On April 28th, nine of the twelve teams went into the play offs. In this double elimination format with modified BCA rules, it was a race to 7. Everyone had a lot of fun playing Friday night and all day Saturday, even with the intense games during the matches. By Sunday, April 30, the elimination results had the Last Chance Tavern team pitted against the Cross Key’s Pub team to see who’d go on to play in the finals. With a 6 6 score the Cross Key’s team grabbed the victory game and went on to play the undefeated Team 2 from the Ol’ Tima Tavern. The score stayed pretty tight through the first part of the match, but in the end, the Ol’ Tima 2 team edged ahead and went on to win 7 - 4. The players would like to express our appreciation to our sponsoring establishments and our league officers, Gale Ahrens - President and Leda Chandler - Secretary/Treasurer for their efforts in making this one of the best years ever for the Lower Columbia Women’s Pool League. 1st Ol’ Tima 2: Malynne Myers - Captain, Marie Brenner, Becky Mowdy, Kathi Giles 2nd Cross Key’s Pub: Carol Edwards - Captain, Donna Edwards, Pam Portwood, Bonnie Satterlee 3rd Last Chance Tavern: Debra Price - Captain, Frannie Haus, Phyllis Hood, Julie Hecker, Cherie Carver

and add even more members, but that is to be seen in the future. This season was a record breaking one. When all was said and done the league paid out over $8,000. As usual there were the pay outs for individual wins, top ten percentages, and top (2) women, 9-ball breaks during the regular play, a 9-ball pot, and then the famous singles tournament in which a cool $4,578 was paid out. The most important thing about the singles tournament is that every member that participates is paid money. There are so many ways that a member can win money in this league it is almost unbelievable. Another great thing about this league is that we have a great arrangement of different talent. There are a couple A and a few B players and then plenty of C players. But these are league players, not those A+ and super A’s that play on the road and play the majority of the time for money only. This gives the C players the opportunity to pit themselves against a higher ranked player for experience and yet not feel completely out classed. It also gives a change for anyone having a good weekend to finish high or to even win the tournament. Every one of our playoffs has been won by different members and this season wasn’t any different. Ed Slade went undefeated in the playoffs. His matches were Concorde Rapanan (7-0), Bill Irons (7-6), Dino Lyons (7-3), Edward Cauley (7-0), Bob Brandt (7-4), Mike Siplivy (7-1) and then Mike Siplivy again in the finals (9-1). Ed was shooting lights out for the entire tournament. Mike Siplivy joined the league for the first time this season. His matches were Carol Mellors (7-2), Manny Fernandez (7-5), Randy Martin (7-2), Treon Pham (7-1), Ed Slade (1-7), Sambo Hoff (6-5) and the finals against Ed Slade (9-1). Shotze’s, Ford and I want to congratulate both players on a fantastic tournament. We would also like to congratulate Lorraine Krom and Bernie Foster for being the top (2) women of the season. Lorraine also made history by being the first woman to finish with over 50 percent for the entire season. Lorraine finished with 52%. The payout for this playoff went as follows: 1st $518 Ed Slade 2 nd $380 Mike Siplivy rd 3 $300 Sambo Hoff 4 th $240 Bob Brandt 5/6 $190 Treon Pham, Scott Chandler 7/8 $150 Edward Cauley, Randy Martin 9-12 $120 Jeff Jimenez, Ron Graves, Don McMillan, Phil Wilson 13-16 $95 Brad Hornshaw, Marvin Holmes, Bill Byers, Alan Buck 17-24 $80 Jerry Lawson, Jim Shoemaker, Lyman Moss, Lance Bauge, Manny Fernandez, Lorraine Krom, Dino Lyons, Scott Walton 25-32 $70 Bill Irons, Joe McLaughlin, Carol Mellors, Nancy Kennedy, Mike Kennedy, Bernie Foster, Dave Bronson, Marc Greenberg 33-38 $65 Vicki Knutson, John Te, Paul Haubiel, Melanie Elder, Concorde Rapanan, Chuck Mellors Thanks again to Dave Shields, Jae and the rest of the staff for putting on a great tournament and always to Darryl for giving us a great place to have this league. Have a great summer! Rose Wilson and Ford

Here is another great Artistic Pool Shot / Challenge. This shot is from the draw discipline and has a Degree of Difficalty (DODof 7. Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up position F ball per grid one diamond segment off of the foot cushion and one diamond segment off of the #4, (long rail),cushion. The A ball is centered between the pocket points. The cue ball is in hand, ON THE FOOT STRING, behind line X. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to F ball and draw back to A ball. You must make both object balls as pocket letter designated. The cue ball may contact an extra cushion before making A ball. A scratch is also allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Don’t raise the butt of your cue to get draw. Keep your cue as level to the plane of the table as possible, i.e. lower your bridge hand. Pay close attention to how low you are cueing the cue ball by getting the tip extremly close to the cue ball. Don’t use excessive power. Make sure your warm-up strokes are smooth and don’t forget to follow through on your execution stroke.

Slow and Slower By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy A large part of learning how to play well involves pushing back your frontiers. You are comfortable in parts of your game but there are parts that might terrify you, such as drawing the cue ball more than three feet or 80-degree cuts on the game ball. Practice should help to take the terror out of those “terra incognito” regions. Power shots are one area to work on, but this month let’s try the other side — soft shots with precise control of speed. These are most useful when playing safeties and just rolling a ball into a pocket. I got this drill from Tom Riccobene of New Mexico, who has just completed his training as an Advanced Instructor in the BCA’s Instructor Training Program. I didn’t do very well at first, but Bob Jewett it’s fun and attention grabbing. The idea is to shoot a series of balls from the head string and make each one travel a little farther than the one before. The cue ball is not involved — just hit each object ball with your cue stick. In the diagram are the beginning and ending positions for a typical attempt with 8 balls. Things went OK until ball 7 which didn’t get past the six. The first technique to work on is visualizing where the ball should go and then putting it there. Pick a precise spot on the table. With a ball already out there, pick a certain distance past that ball. For the first balls, I try to put the next ball exactly one ball beyond the previous. For the balls farther out, that’s too much precision for me, so I try for a half-diamond past the previous ball. You will probably need to shorten your bridge. There are lots of reasons to use a shorter bridge on this kind of shot. A 4-inch bridge is not to short for the first shots. Really. Try it. As you get better at controlling your soft speed, add more balls to the line with the ultimate goal of shooting all 16 balls. I’ve done all 16 once, and

June 2006

the key was leaving the first 10 balls between the line and the side pockets. That left more room and chance for error on the last 6. When you have made good progress on this drill, and I think you will see

progress within 10 minutes of practice, try the drill in the other direction: Shoot the first ball as far down the table as you can without hitting the far cushion, then shoot the next one so it doesn’t quite reach the first, and so on. Do you have a favorite, fun drill? Send it in to my email address, and I may write it up in a future column.

Just Shut up and Take it “The worse thing you can do when a match is handed to you is hand it back,” said Robert Rodriguez, Master level player and good friend from Denver. This profound statement was made after a recent winning match where I could do no wrong. I’m currently writing from Las Vegas, Nevada where the 2006 BCA National events just wrapped up. This story was inspired by my first match of the singles event. It’s a race to seven and I’m playing a very tough competitor. She’s played in numerous pro events and I know she’s a strong player. In fact, I accidentally saw on the board that I was playing her and intentionally didn’t tell anyone because I just didn’t want to hear their reactions when I said her name. Immediately, I could tell that things were going my way. I missed a couple balls early on that didn’t leave her with a shot. A couple breakouts she went for left her snookered. She Samm Diep was clearing her balls and leaving me an open table in most racks. In a race to seven, she won one game. After the match, I was excited about the win, but had a hard time feeling I like I deserved it. As silly as it may seem, I knew that I was very fortunate to get a chance in many of those seven racks. It was then that Robert pointed out to me that though I had the opportunities that I did, I still needed to get out. Even if someone “hands you a game” you still need to take it. Just shut up and take it. (Those were my words, not his.) You can’t lose sight of your objective; which is, once you enter that tournament arena and assemble your cue, you’re playing your best and playing to win. If you’re playing to have a drink and some fun or to meet new friends, then don’t bother entering the tournament. This is not the time and place for that. May that reminder keep you focused enough to do what you came here to do. Who cares how you do it, just do it. Another insightful reminder came from Tom Ross, friend and writer for Billiards Digest (and a million other publications). “That’s okay,” he said, when I told him I felt like she handed me the match. “It’s okay to win a match that way as long as you are realistic about it. Be honest with yourself but accept that you still played well to win.” Robert’s right. The worse thing I could’ve done would be to hand the match back over to her. So, the next time you feel the table going your way. Accept it. Take what you get; good or bad of course. Its okay to acknowledge you got a lucky roll or two, but make sure you take advantage of it. Instead of feeling sorry for your opponent, punish them for not finishing the rack. Just take that game away from them. Run out those balls. You deserve it. Byrne’s Complete Book of Pool Shots My Best Pool Day Ever by: Dale E. Caldwell I remember the day that I just couldn’t miss How I made every bank shot, angle and kiss Every ball rolled exactly the distance it needed Every shot that I played somehow succeeded And it wasn’t long before everyone noticed I was playing beyond my typical novice So a player approached, I mean a real player One everyone feared who happened to be there He told me my game was looking real fine But wondered if it would with cash on the line I couldn’t back down I was shooting too well Besides, if I beat him, the stories I’d tell I knew I could do it this day was so rare A crowd gathered around smelling cash in the air We wagered some cecils the race was to seven And I played like God with divine intervention My opponent was fried at seven to three I was truly elated all eyes were on me But just as I started to reach for the money A voice in the back said “I need your help honey!” Startled and groggy I awoke from this fable My best pool is played when I’m not at the table.

ROBERT BYRNE

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: B YRNE has won R OBERT tournaments in 8-ball, 9-ball and straight pool. In 1999 he won both the National Senior and National Amateur tournaments in threecushion billiards. Named “Best Billiard Writer” by Billiards Digest, his books and videos on pool have sold nearly a million copies. Byrne was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame in 2001. He lives in Dubuque, IA.

Editors Note: Excerpts reprinted with permission of the author, Robert Byrne.

In a strict technical sense, every shot is a massé shot unless the cue is exactly level and hit’s the cueball precisely on the vertical axis without a trace of sidespin. If the cueball path curves even slightly because of sidespin and a downward hit, it is a massé shot. The big massés that make the cueball travel in weird, lookpin paths are best left to exhibition players. Executing those eye-popping showstoppers requires a short stiff, heavy cue, coaching from an expert, and a table of practice them on. Little massés on the other hand, don’t require a special cue or an explosive stroke. When opportunities for them come up, the great majority of players pass them by. Either they don’t see them, or they think they are too hard. Little massés, the kind that are worth trying in games, aren’t easy, but with a bit of knowledge and practice, they are no harder than, say, an offangle bank. Massés should be considered in games when the cueball is within an inch or two of the object ball; at greater distances controlling the curve is usually too hard. It also helps if the final target is large - a ball in the jaws, for example, or a safety zone behind a group of balls. A geometric method of aiming massé shots was worked out in 1835 by physicist Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis and then forgotten for a century and a half. It was demonstrated on Byrne’s Standard Video of Pool, Volume II and explained in detail in Byrne’s Advanced Technique in Pool and Billiards (1990). To save you the trouble of running to your bookshelf for the book or tape, here is a condensed description:

The geometry of massé shots:

The circle in this diagram is the cueball as viewed from directly overhead. Point A is where the cueball rests on the cloth. Assume that AC is the direction you want the cueball to take initially and DE is the desired final direction. Because you want the cueball to curve to the right, you must use right English. Start with the cue level, aiming as shown by the solid arrow labeled “Aiming line”, which is parallel to AC. Raise the cue to about 67 degrees and aim through the cueball at a point on the cloth, B, so that AB is parallel to DE. It’s up to you to bring the cue down on the cueball at the correct speed, for the harder you hit it, the farther out it will go before it curves. While it is not necessary to understand the physics behind this aiming method - almost all top players rely on simple judgment based on practice and most have never heard or Coriolis - I find keeping the geometry in mind very helpful for the relatively soft massés in this section.

EXPO IN LAS VEGAS - JUNE 2007 BCA Board responds quickly to the membership COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO: The Billiard Congress of America has reset the dates of the International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo. The 2007 event will be held June 21-23 at The Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas. Feedback from the recently concluded 2006 Expo, held last month in Houston, indicated that a majority of BCA members — both exhibitors and non-exhibitors — preferred Las Vegas as a location for the show and that the show be held at a later date. “In our first meeting after the Expo, we felt it necessary to determine the cause for the light turnout in Houston,” stated Trade Show Committee Chairman Ivan Lee, “Once we had an indication that the major issues were the location and the date, we had a clear path to follow.” The unanimous action by the BCA Board moves the 2007 Expo to the June date and maintains the previously scheduled location at The Sands Expo Center. “We listened to our members and felt that this was the best move for the entire industry” stated BCA Board President Gregg Hovey. “Combined with a return to Las Vegas next year, we expect this shift to produce a very well-attended trade show.”

A man calling himself J. J. played and won his first Sam’s 14-1 Tournament Sunday, May 7. With 11 players, J. J. was beat by Tracy Fannin (43 to 37) in one of the three qualifying groups, but made his way into the finals round in the wild card spot. J. J. beat Bill Bradford solidly in the finals, 50 to 16. Bill had the top seed coming into the finals with 3 wins, but ended the day in third place with the high run of 23. J. J. faced Tracy again in the finals and beat him 44 to 21. We were pleased to see several new players, as always, among them Debbie Gronvald. It’s always a pleasure to have women participate in the Sam’s Straight Pool Tournament. The next First-Sunday-of-the-month 14-1 Tournament is scheduled for June 4, 11 a.m. Tables are open at 10 a.m. with the $12 registration fee. From The Work Bench by: Pat Sheehan - mrpoollsr@aol.com - See ad page 13 Going to the trade show for the BCA is always a special treat for me and the April show in Houston Tex. was even more exciting than ever. Old friends to see and new ones to meet. We were going to set up a Pat Sheehan Gold crown style for Gorina Cloth and help them staff their booth. It is always a pleasure to see my good friend Carlos Gorina when he comes over from Spain, and finally had a chance to meet Jon Spiegel and John Abbey for we spend a lot of time on the phone, but that is the great part of the trade show, getting to see face to face the voice you know. There was a lot of excitement at their booth. Because of their long tradition of producing fine woolen cloth they Ledeen Hangen from R C Designs were chosen to provide the cloth for the IPT tour this year. The International Pool Tour will be using the wool cloth for all the final events and will leave it to the qualifying event sponsor to choose the new wool or Gorina’s excellent worsted. The first trade show I attended was at the Jack Tar Hotel in San Francisco 1965. It was held by the Bowling and Billiard Institute of America BBIA. There were 4 exhibitors displaying on 3’x6' dining tables. A couple of bowling shoes here some pool balls there, no pool tables, cues or accessories. About 25 attendees who remained friends all my business life. Since I was in my early twenties I have out lived most of them. Lou Wermers from Fischer tables, Maurice Blatt, Art Schmidt and the whole gang including Frank Lanza are all gone. Fred Mali and I continue on. Fred Mali still looks the same and the two of us posed at his booth. We shared old memories Pat Sheehan and Fred Mali and he filled me in on what was new or old in the material that makes the game what it is. Fred knows the cloth and cue part of the business better than any one I know. His booth

was always busy and he was there from open to close. It was great to see Ledeen Hangen from RC Designs. She is now running the company for Raul Rubalacava her father and took a lot of time for an interview to explain how they had solved the problems we manufacturers and installers have been having with imported pockets. She was showing a new convertible pool dining table. RC Designs is always on the cutting edge of fashion and design in this industry. I met an old friend from the Italian slate industry who is now representing a Brazilian slate producer. I was most impressed with Domus Slate finishing technique and the company’s investment in the Italian machinery and methods to produce the finest slate beds I have seen since the quarries ran out in Vermont. I got out my 30 power Geoscope that I use to examine billiard cloth and got a close up view of the surface. None of the grind marks I am used to seeing and had the gold flecks that the Vermont slate had and no carbon streaks. Not to be prejudiced about Gorina I spent a great deal of time with the folks at the Simonis booth visiting with another phone pal, Felice Enright and Chris Hayes. Both of them are “drop dead gorgeous “ so I was not disappointed when I saw them in person. Even though Carlos Gorina is a good friend I still buy a great deal of cloth from Simonis and am never disappointed. I had a chance to meet Mark Simonis from the plant in Belgium and got a real education on “ why worsted “. Ivan Lee the director or the US operations was a real treat to meet. He really knows the industry and the product he handles. My Brunswick Marquett special thanks to my special” Angel”, Angel Cruze who is the guy we all count on to get the cloth, for he is in charge of the warehouse and shipping. Cheese wasn’t able to make the show so I was to cover the event. Paddo’s camera was in his car in Portland and Angel loaned us his camera so you readers can share the pix. Brunswick was the star of the show with their immense booth showing their new tables and game room furniture. Ewa was there to show off the new Marquett table which was snatched out of the pages of history and brought to Houston, It was always my favorite along with her sisters the Rochester and Phfister. Their furniture design people did a complete game room to go with it. I was lucky enough to gain an interview with Sean Cummings the new president of Brunswick Billiards. I will be talking about Sean and the new Brunswick in future articles. for I think (continued on page 25)

Scotch Doubles is one of the favorite divisions among the spectators. These tables are hard to reach due to the sea of fans surrounding them. Broken into divisions again to reflect relative skill levels, this year our Master Team winners were the team of well-known Chicago pro player Ike Runnels and his partner Amy Latzko. They took home $2,900 for their win over Tara McCracken and Gordy Vanderveer of Dallas, Texas. In the Open Division more players means a larger purse so Carolyn Pao of New York City and her partner, William Reuben earned a cool $3,600 for their win in that division. The end of the week in Vegas brings closure to the most popular of all of the events, the Teams. These teams play together throughout the year and part of the 2nd Place Men’s Super Senior Singles Donald Harp drama here is in deciding the lineups as many teams carry more than the five-man playing limit. The Women’s Masters Division was captured by Greenfield’s Slightly Competitive from Denver. Hosts IPT Qualifier May 26-28, 2006 The Las Vegas Cue Club hosted one of the five IPT Qualifiers held over the Memorial Day weekend. Seventeen top pool players showed up to do battle for the two entry spots being offered into the IPT’s North American 8-Ball Open Championships to be held at The Venetian in Las Vegas. The list of players for this event was impressive. The players who won their entry into the North American 8-Ball Open were Mark Tademy and David Matlock. Entry into IPT Qualification Tournaments is $1,000, with the option to enter for a $500 fee. Entry fees must be paid in advance. There is very limited space at each event so entries are based on a first-come, firstserved basis. 9BALLPOKER.COM F.Y.I. Pool is losing players to online poker sites. (Source: Billiard media 2004-2006) Pool players love action. In it’s first week, 9ballpoker.com averaged 550 unique visitors a day. “We are very pleased with player response to 9ballpoker.com and these results tell us that there is a valid demand for a poker site where part of the profits are added to pool tournament prize funds,” says Magic Marketing Group’s Mark Griffin. That’s right, the same Mark Griffin who has successful ties to pool through the BCA Pool League and Diamond Billiard Products. Griffin continues, “There are so many pool players out there who just love action. They are playing on poker sites that have no interest in pool, or pool players. These sites just host, take fees, and give nothing in return. That’s where 9ballpoker.com comes alive. Every hand you play racks up cash for pool.” 9ballpoker.com uses the most robust, and secure, poker technology available in the online poker industry. 9ballpoker.com is a site where pool players feel at home as familiar billiard imagery is present on every page. You even play around a pool table sporting the new tournament blue cloth. The goal is to create a lot of added money for pool tournaments. Cross sponsorship with leading billiard industry manufacturers will be offered. Now players can enter poker tournaments and not only win cash, but cool pool products too. 9ballpoker.com is in also negotiation with prominent pool, and poker, players to both represent the site and challenge players in “Beat the Pro” live poker tourneys. Says Mark, “ You may not be able to beat them on a pool table, but at 9ballpoker.com you have a chance to get even.” Go on, “Give yourself a Hand,” visit 9ballpoker.com and play where it pays to be a pool player.

LEWISTOWN, MONTANA I arrived at 3 o’clock in the afternoon on Friday and as it is every year, you reacquaint yourself with business associates, friends and just the good old feeling of getting out of town. The State 8-Ball tournament started back in 1981 and has been in various locations throughout the state, with the most predominant location being West Yellowstone, I believe. The town sits in the middle of a volcanic caldron and if you watch your science channel, it is believed to be the largest volcanic eruption known to the third rock. All the pool players that I talked to almost exclusively have the same sentiment. They would like the state Billy Saunders championships to be held somewhere new, somewhere else. The problem being, as in real estate, “location, location, location”, a place big enough. A place that must fit forty pool tables, house some four hundred players and have access to beef and potatoes or some other delicacy

that would delight your pallet. The old MCMOA Winners pictured saying “Be careful what you wish for at the top of the page (l to r) … you might get it”. Rumor has it Linda Asleson, Jeff Boucher, Candace Bradley, Brian Dyson new locations may be in the works, but we’ll have to wait and see. A big hit at the tournament this year was their logo T-shirts, creatively designed on a black T-shirt. I for one , and I’m not alone, thank you for the great T-shirts. Another item that was introduced to this year’s 8-Ball Championships was a commemorative souvenir CuePen and soft leather case. It has the date, event and location that make it a cool keepsake. If you didn’t get one at the tournament you can find out how to by going to www.CuePen.com or by calling 406-285-3099. There are six divisions in the State 8-Ball Championships: Men’s A and B, Women’s A and B, and Second Chance Men & Women. In the Second Chance Tournament each first place winner received a commemorative plaque, while the top three in each of the other divisions received a commemorative plaque. Those winning several times over the years include Jerry Kohm of Billings who has won seven times, the first being in 1982, then 1988, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002. Other multiple winners are Don Oliver of Missoula (1987, 1990, 1994). Georgianna Casteel of Butte (1994, 1998), Jane Bartrum-Plant of Belgrade (1988, 2000, 2003), Gail Lave of Laurel (1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992), Terry Bummer of Mary Price Billings (1993, 1996), Janet Dunks of Butte (1992, 1999), Jason Tigart of Great Falls (1996, 2000), Debbie Keithcart of Helena (1994, 1995), Jeff Boucher of Bozeman (1999, 2004, 2006), Sky Tigart of Great Falls (1996, 2002), MorganSteinman of Hamilton (2001, 2003, 2005) and Linda Asleson of Billings (1995, 2004, 2006). It was great to see everybody and I’m looking forward to seeing everybody next year that I don’t see along the way. Chris Warren of Capital Music added these closing remarks, “Thanks to Ryan Dunster the dedication of the coin machine operators of Montana we hope to continue to grow and promote the game of pool and thanks to all the pool players.” Men’s A 1st Jeff Boucher 2 nd Billy Saunders 3 rd Jim Winters 4 th Jim Hansen 5/6 Dave Schwartz, Jim Ward 7/8 Brett VanVoast, Terry Bummer 9-12 Art St Germain, Doug Medina, Wes Wageman, Walt Wolff

Souquet & Ouschan Reigning Champions Photos and article courtesy of enjoypool.com

Jasmin Ouschan and Ralf Souquet are your new enjoypool.com 9Ball Champions. Ouschan defeated Allison Fisher 7-5 in the first match of the day. Fisher came out and took charge early in the match with a 3-0 lead. Ouschan then came back and won 3 games of her own to tie the match at 3-3. The match was tied again at 4-4, but Ouschan won two in a row to get to the hill at 6-4. From there, they split racks on their breaks and Ouschan won 7-5. The men’s finals saw Souquet run the first 3 racks he broke and he took a 4-2 lead by taking advantage of a dry break by Archer. A great shot in game 8 by Archer knotted the score back at Ralf Souquet, Jasmin Ouschan 4-4, but Archer went for a very tough cut shot in the 11th game that cost him the rack. It looked like Archer would get a chance to redeem himself when Souquet got bad shape on the 1-ball in the final rack, but Souquet played a great two way bank on the one that left him out in the final rack. Both Ouschan and Souquet earned $20,000 for their wins, while Archer and Fisher settled for $10,000 in prize money. The action from the semi-final rounds set the field for the finals. Souquet won a grueling hill-hill match against Efren Reyes on Friday to earn his spot in the finals. The match between Souquet and Reyes saw neither player able to capitalize on their break early and the first seven racks were won by the player who was not breaking. Souquet finally pulled ahead 5-3, but Reyes pulled back even at 6-6. Reyes had the break in the final game but left a combo on the one ball after the break. The combo didn’t look tough, but Efren missed it anyway and Ralf went on to run the final rack for the victory. Jasmin Ouchan won a hill-hill match with Helena Thornfeldt that turned

sloppy as Thornfeldt seemed unable to get started and Ouschan taking an early 4-0 lead. As Thornfeldt finally got her game going, it was Ouschan who seemed unable to finish off the match and Thornfeldt came back to tie the match at 6-6. The final game was Ouschan’s break and she made three balls on the break and ran the final rack to book her spot in the finals Saturday against Fisher. Three Peat for Jeff Gregory and $2,000 Richer by: Chet Itow, California Billiard Club

For the last 17 tournaments we have had many top players play in the tournament like Marlon Manalo from the Phillipine coming in second to Danny Petraba in May of 2005. During all of these tournaments, we now have one winner who has finally won the tournament 3 times. Congratulations to Jeff Gregory. Jeff is no stranger to the winner’s circle as he had won the Reno USPPA tournament twice. Jeff has grown up in the USPPA system in Santa Cruz, CA and now resides in Lodi, (l to r) Jeff Gregory, Teresa Mojica - tournament director, Jarvis Haskin

CA. From the room owners view point, it is always a pleasure having Jeff Gregory play in your room and tournaments because of his polite, respectful, appreciative manner. Jeff had to play 9 matches to win the double elimination race to 8 USPPA 9-Ball tournament. Jeff received his first lost from Gene Peregrino but later came back to beat Gene and put Gene in the third place. In the finals, Jeff beat Jarvis Haskin twice to win the $2,000 first prize. For Jarvis Haskin, this was one of his finest finish in the Bay Area and received $1,000.

Monthly Results By Tom Suarez, Tournament Director for Hard Times Billiards

Once again the First full weekend of the Month One Pocket and 9 Ball events were filled with Northern California’s best players. House Pro Tony Chohan took the One Pocket event that included a record 36 players. The tournament started at 1pm and was over at just after midnight. This was very quick for a One Pocket tournament with that many players. Mr. Chohan’s matches only lasted a brief 30 minutes or less. The finals only lasted 20 minutes, as Tony had an 8 and out off his opponent’s break and ran 6 and out in the second game against a very tough local player, Trevor Smith. The One Pocket format was double elimination with a race to two on both sides. Total prize money was $1020 which included $300 added by Hard Times. First place received $300 and second $220. The 9 Ball event took in 42 entries at $25 each for a total of $1050 and an additional $420 added by Hard Times. Local player Frank Nordman took

Each team of players competed in the round robin format and were guaranteed four rounds of play. All the teams knocked out of the round robin advanced to the Best of the Rest semi final board. first place honors and the $400 prize going undefeated. Carl Wilson from Carson City NV, took 2nd and $260 for his efforts. Carl Wilson’s first match was with Tony Chohan. Tony took the first 5 games in a race to 6. Carl battled back, capitalizing on Tony’s very few mistakes to tie the match at 5-5 and then snapped in the 9 ball for the early win. Tony went on to the one loss side and won all his matches going into the finals of the One Loss bracket. Guess who he met there? Carl Wilson. Once again, Tony took command and got to the hill without a loss, but, as fate would repeat itself, Carl would once again battle back to get to Hill-Hill and win on a ‘Snapper’. Frank Nordman played almost flawless in the first match against Carl Wilson in the finals and won, eliminating the need for the second match. Janet Shimel

Shimel the president. I first met Jan when her father, Ben brought the whole family to visit our shop on S.E. Bybee in 1965. I had been buying Sampio cues from Ben that were manufactured in Belgium. Ben, his wife Dawn who ran the company after Ben’s death are all gone, but Jan still remembers the visit. She has expanded the line from the Sampio cue to every major product in the accessory line including Cuetec, Joss, Excaliber, many of the cloth people, and so many novelty products that the booth was a must to visit. BCA is sure they made a mistake in choosing Houston, but was that all. Is it the date or do they need something to bring the 886 buyers back and add more, for buyers are the key to a successful show. If you have any comments I will be glad to send them on to the powers. We will be seeing a new director after Aug. Stephen Ducoff will be retiring and the new director whom ever it is can use all the input. See you in Los Vegas next year.
