Orange County APA Operators Honored

Recently the National Headquarters for the American Poolplayers Association (APA) released the list of winners of their League Operator of the Year (Journeyman) Award. It was awarded to Carol and Vicki Wade, the Orange County, California APA Operators. I had the opportunity to talk to Carol and Vicki about their award and their league. They are a Mother/Daughter team that have the North Orange County area. My first question was, “What is the Journeyman Award?” They responded by saying, “The Journeyman Award is given to a League Operator who has been in business for at least one year but not more than two. It is awarded to the League Operator who has accomplished outstanding results during their second year. The qualities that are evaluated to determine the winning candidate are: 1) Considered for the Annual Administrative Award (We won the Gold Level) 2) Support the National Singles Championships program through local promotions 3) Attended the annual convention and Regional Meeting” Besides the Journeyman Award, the Wade’s received the “Goal Getters” award. This award is based on the goals they set and achieved last year. Our conversation then turned to their leagues itself. They cover the area of North Orange County, which

has approximately 1.8 million residents. Currently they have 112 (5-8 person) teams, 10 Master teams and 9 (9-ball) teams for a total of 131 teams and a total membership of approximately 900 players. Vicki mentioned that, “We were fortunate to take over a successful area with a successful and helpful league operator. We feel that we were able to make it more successful because of the previous owner. He’s been a virtue to us.” Both Carol and Vicki played pool under the previous owner and their passion influenced his decision to sell the franchise to them. Carol also was a League Rep and got an understanding of the league operation from that experience making their purchase of the franchise a wise decision. Being a league operator is a lot of work and they were prepared for it going in.
They mentioned they spent the first year learning how to run the league and now they are building on that to grow the league. Vicki mentioned, “We just started talking about having a Junior Division in Orange County, which has never been done before. We are working out the “bugs” for Junior Leagues, talking to other League Operators about any problems they encountered. There is no national title for Juniors as yet but we may be able to influence that once our Junior League gets going. We brought the idea up in a Captain’s meeting recently and got a good response.” Junior players are the future of our sport and we hope to hear more from the APA Junior Leagues of Orange County as soon as they get going. They also related a story about a group of women players in their league that all
became pregnant around the same time. All the ladies are due between September 22-29 and jokingly refer to their children as “a future APA team”. I asked Vicki if they had any high National finishers and she answered proudly, “We had a team last year that placed 9th in the 9-Ball Team Event and they were also awarded the APA Sportsmanship Award for the year.” What does the future hold? Carol and Vicki said they plan to grow to their full potential, which according the APA League Headquarters is 1900 teams! This number is based on area population, age of population, pool tables in the area, etc. Vicki enthusiastically said, “It may take us 20 to 30 years but we will get there. That’s the goal we are shooting for. Our league is great and the players are fabulous!” I could tell from my interview with these two ladies that they really love their job! They enthusiastically promote their leagues and are genuinely interested in their players and what their needs and wants are. I would like to thank them again for taking the time to talk to me and know they will have every success in their league endeavors. How could they not when they are that involved. Player Profile: Cindy Doty

Cindy Doty is well known in the Northwest for her pool playing abilities. I have watched Cindy play at the Western BCA Regionals and have been impressed with her skill. She is a natural. That was confirmed in an interview she gave me on Memorial Day. We spoke about Cindy’s ability and if she took lessons and she said, “Nobody really taught me. I first started playing pool at the age of 18. This was before I met Ivan (my husband), of course. I learned by watching some of the better players in town, like John Ward and Pat Gamble. I was lucky enough to be one of those players who had a natural stroke and a natural eye. I really got lucky, don’t ask me why. I had the stroke to begin with and I just loved the game right off the bat. It just all fell together and it became my real love. Then I met Ivan, he just taught me a ton. Not so much by telling me but by my watching him. I’m a watcher. I’ve learned so much by watching people and then I start to work on it myself. Somebody can tell me something and sometimes it takes me a while to understand it.” Cindy has a long list of impressive wins in her resume from local to regional to national, playing in both pro and amateur events. In 1992 Cindy placed 2nd in Open Singles at the BCA Nationals in Las Vegas and 1st in Master Women’s Singles at the VNEA in Las Vegas. This was just the
start of her stellar performances in Las Vegas at National events, which continued through the 90’s. With all these wins, what was Cindy’s most memorable? She answered, “I would have to say the most memorable was the North American 9-Ball Championships (1995) that I won through the BCA in Reno. That was pretty exciting, I played good the whole tournament. What made it even better was I played solid and stroked the balls like I was supposed to. No lucky wins, I earned it. I enjoyed that a lot.” Cindy has a lot of great memories from Vegas and added, “I have met some wonderful, wonderful people over the course of the years. When I go to Vegas it is so neat to get on an elevator, or walk in the poolroom and just have people come up to me from all over the country. We hug and talk like we’ve known each other forever, which we have, I’ve been going since the early 80’s.” Along with great wins, goes great stories and Cindy recounted some of her favorites, “I don’t know what year it was but whenever Corey Deuel was starting his run with a 2nd in the Bar Box Championships in Reno. I had the opportunity of playing scotch doubles with Corey as my partner. I was in Reno for the Women’s Division 9Ball and Glenn Atwell set us up. We got 5/6th place in the tournament. He played awesome. It was a little intimidating but it was a great experience.” “I went to Carson City and played in a little open tournament at Bobby Hunter’s place but Julie ran the tournament. It was a race to 9 and I had Robin Bell 7-2. Robin was already playing on the pro events and doing extremely well. I was playing like a god and I had her. She was just dogging balls. I was playing so good. I was getting out from nowhere. Then a bell went off
5 in my head, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to beat Robin Bell!’ I never won another game! I’m telling you, I was on tilt big time. It was like a highlight and a lowlight all in one. I was so excited to have her 7-2 and she was missing the balls, from the pressure and then I never won another game and lost 9-7.” Cindy participated in WPBA events when you did not have to win a qualifier but could buy your way into the tournament. Her best finish was in Wisconsin where she placed 9-12th. She has played locally on the NWPA tour and it’s predecessor (ACW) where she achieved top points three years. Numerous titles at the Western BCA Regionals at Lincoln City, Oregon and Cindy’s most recent notable finish was at the BCA National Championships with a 3rd place finish in the Women’s Master Team Division. Her teammates are: Andrea SaenzMaes, Liz Cole, Mary Hopkin and Cathy Gamble. Cindy’s life now has evolved from just playing pool to running a very successful and growing BCA League. She has been a league operator for 3 years and has Divisions all over Washington and Oregon. There is a division starting soon in Madras, Oregon as well. Cindy takes care of her players and recognizes their accomplishments on all league levels. Personal goals that Cindy would still like to achieve are two she said, “My first goal is I want to win the Women’s Master Team event at BCA Nationals and my other goal is to place first in the 8-Ball Singles. With one 2nd and two 3rd’s, I would love to win that too. It’s just going to happen soon. I’m running out of time.”

The first weekend of month events for May started off with 31 One Pocket players vying for their part of the $920 pot and $300 first place prize. The 9 Ball, for the 3rd time in the last 2 years, reached 64 players in the double elimination race to 6 for the winners and race to 4 on the one loss side. The total prize money for the event was a whopping $2,100.00. Not many surprises with the talent filled field including Bobby Hunter, Gerardo Jamito, Austin Murphy and George Michaels. The One Pocket afternoon’s matches were some of the best that the players and spectators had seen in a long time. Most of the matches went hill-hill and some of them, went to the last ball. Billy Palmer, Chris MacDonald and Robert Aldana split the $630 prize money for the top three positions. The 9 Ball event also included an abundance of hill-hill matches with some great comebacks and thrilling

George Michaels WINS Back to Back 9 Ball game ending shots. Bobby Hunter took his position in the ‘Hot Seat’ match with wins over Mike Spinola, Gerardo Jimito (4th place), Damien Overton (7th/8th), Marshall Williams ((7th/8th) and Robert Aldana (5th/6th). The Hot Seat opponent, Austin Murphy one of Sacramento’s young guns at 14 years old, took wins over Bill K, Craig Herman, Taylor Townsend, George Michaels, and Ralph Daloin (5th/6th). The Hot Seat match between Bobby Hunter and Austin Murphy was all Bobby as Austin didn’t get to the table enough to make an impact. Mr. Hunter was running out or leaving safeties that would be problems for any of the top players. Austin Murphy went to the one loss side to match up against George Michaels, who Austin had defeated earlier but this time the match went to a very determined Mr. Michaels. The finals are true double elimination. Bobby Hunter had a lead of 5 games to 3 and was on the hill and one win away from the tournament champion, when a ‘dry’

break led to George Michaels running that rack and two more to win the set 6-5. The second match is a race to 4. George won the lag and came up with his 3rd break and run, taking the 1-0 lead in this set, and eventually winning the set 4-2 and the $500 prize for First Place.

This was George’s second straight 1 st place finish at Hard Times Monthly Jamborees Last month George took the fist place prize by defeating Damien Overton in the finals. George got to the finals by defeating young gun Patrick Rhea, who finished 3rd.

Local Youths Rally to Win

Two of the youngest players combine to decide McQ’s “B” nine-ball tournament championship held May 5. Ryan Busto, 24, of Spokane, defeated Danny Quince, 25, also of Spokane, to emerge from a field of 30. The win is Busto’s first “B” tournament championship. In the match for the “driver’s seat” Quince rolled past Busto 7-2. Busto eliminated Rudy Boyd of Nespelem Wash. 7-5 to get back in the championship. Busto took the rematch 7-6, forcing a third and deciding match in the double elimination tournament, and won again, 7-5. Boyd gave the best comeback performance. He lost his second match to Busto 7-5. In the loser’s bracket, he advanced the next six matches until he defeated again by Busto in a rematch to finish third place. The director of the double-elimination tournament is Carrie Queen. The race is to seven, both sides. It is played by BCA rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Red-Circle cue balls. Trick & Fancy Discipline
This month’s Artistic Pool Shot is from the Trick & or Fancy Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 6. Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up place F ball on the foot spot. The C ball is now frozen on the tangent line to pocket C with allowance for throw effect of F ball. The D ball is centered between pocket points. The cue ball is in hand, anywhere in box zone by pocket A. The objective of this shot is to shot the cue ball to C ball, then travel three cushions to D ball. Make all three object balls as pocket letter designated. The cue ball may contact an extra cushion by D ball, and a scratch is allowed. All Mr Ed’s Tournaments have food served and no table fees

Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Make sure that the foot spot is in the correct location, center of the table Length wise and centered two diamonds up from the foot rail. Next, use top left English and allow for deflection of the cue. The speed of this shot is slightly above moderate. It will take a little power to get the cue ball three cushions around the table. Lastly, be sure to allow for throw on ball F. The line of centers between C and F ball should be pointed to the long rail side of pocket F. Seeing this is one of the easier shots you should be able to master this shot in a short period of time.

San Francisco Billiard Academy Here is a good shot to test your ability to spin the ball and to improve your ability to get around the table using the cushions. I find it useful to check out both my stick and the table for how spin works under current playing conditions. A common adage in the pool world is that you can shoot 90% of your shots without using English. Well, this may be true if your name is Mosconi or Hall. Ideally, you can run out the table with nothing but Bob Jewett stop shots and slow rollers. Babe Cranfield in his book on straight pool recounts the time he was watching Ralph Greenleaf who in a run of 60 balls sent the cue ball to the cushion only twice. Not much English in that run. But for most of us, it’s good to be prepared to use the rails to help us around the table. Working with this shot will help you combine follow with side spin. The shot is pretty easy. The cue ball is near the head spot. (I don’t put it exactly on the spot in case there is a sticker or crater there.) The object ball is about half way between the cue ball and
the pocket. It’s not quite straight in, so a follow shot will hit the side cushion on your side of the side pocket. The first level is to send the cue ball to the line by A which is even with the foot spot. Take several tries until you can end within a few inches of the goal. Use enough side spin to go to the side of the spot shown. Even if the shot is easy for you, experiment to find the combination of side and follow that makes the shot easiest. You want to hit the shot as softly as possible and still get to the goal. Finesse, not power. Next, try to leave the cue ball by B, on the cushion. A little more power is required. The next stop is C. Note on your table the angles the cue ball takes with the spin. This may be above or below C as shown, depending on the spin on the cue ball. You should be playing with enough side that it is clearly visible when the cue ball contacts B. When C is easy, try the final test — bring the Continued........page 9

It was good to see some new faces and players who hadn’t been around for a long time at the May 6th 14-1 Tournament at Sam’s Billiards. But there must have been something in the air, because a lot of players were off their game. Nonetheless, the final four put in strong performances. It was a pleasure to see Chad Kurokawa, a fast-improving player who practices more than most, win his first straight pool tournament. It was also a pleasure to welcome Michael Jensen to Portland, having recently relocated from Boise. Michael finished in second. cue ball back into the kitchen at D. This distance will especially require the correct mix of follow and side spin. Experiment. As you work up through the goals, you will probably find that the aim for the shot changes some. This is because the swerve and throw are changing so you will need a fuller or thinner aim on the object ball. There is no precise rule for how this changes; the point of practicing is to get a feel for it. Remember to try the shot the other way around the table. You may be surprised to find that your left spin is a lot different from your right spin. If so, revisit your fundamentals. If you are considering buying a new cue stick, this is a good shot to test it with. Different sticks require different amounts of compensation when using side spin, and this shot is a good reference if you have practiced it before. One final thing that may help you get a feel faster for the shot: if one of those spotted cue balls is available, use it so you can see immediately what kind of spin you got on the ball. If that’s not available, you could use a stripped object ball, but be careful to clean any chalk marks off your temporary cue ball.

Sorry for the last two months, but I pushed myself to the limit building tables for McMenamins new locations in Olympia, Forest Grove and Eugene and finally the dreaded virus hit and turned to pneumonia and put me out of commission. Thanks to the antibiotics out there I am now back. I never get a chance to really take it easy so I keep pushing on but am too exhausted to keep in touch with you. There is nothing more beautiful than the old tables from England and the continent. They are real treasures and once in a while I get a chance to bring these sexy ladies back. Most of the time I work on Brunswick or other tables made in the US and I steal them from the trip to the dump and return them to factory condition. This year I have had the opportunity to work on three 6x12 English Billiard tables. The first was made by J Ashcroft, the second a Burroughs and Watts and the third and most unique was made by Wm Baylife which we picked up in Seattle for Dr Eric Hansen. The Dr and I made a truly joint effort of bringing this dowager Lady back to the princess she is today. We all went to Seattle to tear her apart and Paddo, myself and two doctors packed the slate and frame into a U Haul and brought her to Portland. The cushions were changed three times in her long life and were still excellent after the Forty years since she made the trip from Liverpool to the US. We replaced the fuzzy nap with Simonis 760 and I refinished the rails while the Doctor took care of the frame. He was smart and sent the parts to a furniture stripper and I hand stripped the rails. We could never tell what the wood was under all the coats of varnish over the original shellac. I made Eric promise to use the original Orange Shellac and gave him complete instructions on how to do it since the furniture people did not want to go through the many steps to get that glow that only French polish will give. We found the lower frame was Honduras Mahogany and the horizontal pieces were done in Santos Rosewood and a beautiful Brazillian Rosewood pattern inlaid into the wood so perfectly that it took a very careful eye to detect that it was not a part of the whole veneer. The rails were Bubinga on the top and Rosewood on the lower “T”. I was a little jealous that the Doctor’s work with a little instruction from me was a dead match for my work and the table was truly as beautiful as the day it was set up first in Liverpool. Of course my kick was to look at the different way the English did their repairs. The table had been recovered many times in her life and had had a lot of damage from players and mechanics. They didn’t have Bondo in those days so they drilled and plugged with dowels to give a place for the next set of Tacks. Many of the moldings were broken over the years and parts must have been lost for the Englishman doing the repair duplicated them by hand with a softer wood. To cover all the mismatched grain he mixed lampblack with the varnish and the original and replacement parts completely had me (From the Work Bench continued on page 29)

POOL IN THE PARK Back/Street’s Billiards HAS BEEN CANCELED
To all you pool players out there: For those of you who may not know, the park next to the Eagles Club actually belongs to the City of Bozeman and is governed by the Safety Director for the City of Bozeman. Therefore every time we wanted to do Pool in the Park, that is the office we had to negotiate with. The City has finished the remodel on the park. The walkways are wide enough for a pool table, but a player would be standing in a flowerbed in order to take a shot. The city personnel didn’t like that idea. Also all the scrub surrounding the park has been removed leaving the park visible to the streets. The city personnel did not like the idea of pool players being that visible to the good citizens of the City Open Daily from 5pm - 2am
of Bozeman. Since a lot of these people are elected, this would be called covering you’re a!! Then, I thought why not try again to put the pool tables in the parking lot that belongs to us. Well that didn’t work either. A person would have to cross an alleyway that is owned by the City of Bozeman, again having to deal with the Safety Director’s Office. They wanted us to completely block off the alley and the parking lot. Again, a situation the City did not want to be involved in. Until I can figure out a way to deal and/or negotiate with the office of Safety Director for the City of Bozeman, I have no other choice but to cancel this tournament at this time. Walking into Back/Street’s Billiards you are greeted by a seating area that takes you to an era gone. The papers and brochures are of course from today, but the sense of a time when pool was billiards and referred to as a gentleman’s game begs you to come in. There is no other place like Back/Street’s in Boise, Idaho. Many adult neighborhood-hangouts have one or two quarter-tables with few strangers walking through their doors. The bartenders know the patrons by name and don’t ask, “Would you like the usual?” There is a bond between the bartenders and the patrons like that of a husband and wife who don’t have to finish each other’s sentences and know what would have been said. The bartenders have the drink ready before the neighbor sits down. The pool tables are worn with the faded streaks of balls being racked on the head spot and covered with dots of shots gone wrong. The cues are few. Most have flat tips that can’t be shaped and are tattooed with a blue ring around their ferrule. Jessie, Jodi, Trista, and Mike will greet you and serve you behind the antique styled U-shaped bar stained a dark cherry with brass accents and a small kitchen tucked into a nook. Pales, ales and lagers are on tap and wine is available as well as soda and bottled water. The menu lists basic fare prepared fresh for you. To play on a table at Back/Street’s you must exchange your id for a rack of balls at the bar and the tables are hourly. The snooker table usually has a game of golf going on it with the gentlemen of experience graciously waiting their turn. All of the tables have three shaded lights above them with accents of foliage. The tables are well lit. The walls bear framed black-and-white photographs of famous billiard players from Jackie Gleason to The Black Widow. Occasionally you will find a living billiard star playing at one of the 9' tables. There are ten 9' tables, freshly felted, lined in two rows toward the back of Back/Street’s. The tables are hourly tables. The price varies depending on the number of players on the table. One of the tables will occasionally get the curious look...it has no pockets. How do you play billiards on a table with no pockets? This table is a Carom table. It is used to play an English game of billiards or a game of Five Pins popular in Italy and Argentina. At the end of the two rows of 9' tables you will find two tiers of spectator seating and five 7' quarter tables that take $0.75 a game. In the far right corner are a few arcade games reminding you of the present. Parallel to the two rows of 9' tables are four more 7’tables that are played by the hour. Continued........page 26

35 Women came out to play at Northern Lounge, AWBT’s 4th stop for an 8 ball tournament with $500 added and presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues. This was a great chance for all the ladies to warm up for the BCA Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada. The weekend was a long scorcher with summer just around the corner. Along with the regular players we had 7 new comers and were happy to see everyone come out to play. Sunday started with Susan Williams vs. Cathy Kelly and Michelle Trevino vs. Susan Mello all on the A-side. The B-side pitted Mary Moench vs. Margie Stephanik and Amy Willkom vs. Holly Ryan. Susan Williams and Susan Mello made it all the way through their brackets and met up for the hot seat match. Susan Mello came out victorious and waited patiently as Susan Williams went on to play Kristie Ortega Michelle Trevino.
After the match between Michelle Trevino and Susan Williams, Susan gained the win and went on to play the final match against Susan Mello once again. The lag was won by Susan. Since this is a true double elimination tournament Susan will have to beat Mello two sets of a race to 4. With an outstanding run out of all stripes, the 1st game was won by Susan. By winning the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and having a spectacular run out, the 5th game, Mello won the match with an ending score of 4 - 1 Rounding out the top 8 were : Michelle Trevino - 3rd, Margie Stephanik - 4th, Holly Ryan & Cathy Kelly - 5/6th, Mary Moench & Amy Willkom - 7/8th. Congratulations to Susan Mello for placing 1st and taking home $290. Congratulations to Susan Williams for taking 2nd and pocketing $200. You both did a great job and we hope to see you two June 9th and 10th at On The Snap in Prescott. The AWBT, also held a free Second Chance event on Sunday and 13 Women came to battle it out. Way to go Kristie Ortega for placing in 1st and winning $77. Great job to Natalie Hostler who came in 2nd place and took home $42 & Beverly Cook who came in 3rd place and pocketed $21. Nicely done to all of you! We held a raffle for a sharp - looking J. Pechauer Custom Cue valued at $460. We were able to raise $271 for the AWBT points fund and we were proud to announce the winner of this fine cue was our very own Secretary, Alison Wayland. AN OLD GAME MADE NEW IN TOWN - PART VI
Shotze’s in Everett, WA has just completed its 6th Open 9-Ball League and to date it’s biggest yet. This year we started with (46) members making up (16) teams. For the first time, no one was turned away and told we were full. This is because we have room to grow. We are looking to max out our league with (22) teams making a grand total of (66) members. Hopefully, down the road, this will happen. Ford and I started this league to be played on 9-foot tables but realistically could only fit up to (10) teams because of the 5-table max. We tried moving it to allowing (40) members by going from 3 to 4member teams but found that the majority of the members liked the 3-member teams better. So to accommodate a few more members, 8-foot tables were added. Since this conception, we have grown from (12) teams to (16) teams. The popularity of this league has put pressure on us to open the doors and allow the numbers of members to grow and also the addition of the 8-foot tables not only in the league but also starting with our next season, into the playoffs. We tried our best to keep the playoffs to the 9-foot

So with this in mind, our league will consist of both 9 and 8foot tables in all aspects. This also means, there is plenty of room for those of you out there who might be interested in joining. Our next League meeting will be August 27th at 7pm and league will start on September 10th. You do not have to bring in a team. Just yourself. Teams don’t mean anything except to schedule matches and get members qualified for the playoffs. breakdown: $3,000 indiv payouts + $390 top percentages + $51 9ball breaks during league play + $641 9-ball brk pot left overs + $650 Shotze’s add in + $410 playoff entry fee + $4,100 left over league money = a grand total of $9,242.00 paid back to the members. The playoff totaled $5,131 paid out to the (41) members who participated. This is bigger than any of the major weekend tournaments we’ve had so far, I believe. This years playoffs left (3) members standing that had won this league before. They were Jim Conway, Jeff Jimenez, & Ed Slade. Any one of them could of taken this once again and it was anyone’s guess who might be the one standing at the end. The top percentages in the past has always been won by the men of the league. The ladies have their own first and second place finishes for their percentages. This year there was a first. Shari Ross with a 59+ percentage actually was place 10th in the league of 46 members. Since 10th place would of only gotten her $5, she decided to take the $20 for the top woman. This is a feat in itself. Congratulations Shari. Jim Conway matches were - Vicki K (7-2), Shari R (7-1), Treon (7-3), Ken W (7-3) and then a loss to Jeff J (6-9), Ed S (5-2) and then back to the finals with Jeff J. Jeff Jimenez’s matches were Suzanne J (7-1), Rob D (7-0), Scott W (7-5), Don Mc (7-3), Sean L (75), and then Jim C (9-6) for the point. The finals, like our major weekend tournaments, is one race for all the marbles. Like I have in the past, I upped the point match from 7 to 9 and the Final match to 11. This is to give these players a fair race to come out the champion for the season. Jim Conway is a hard person to beat in any aspect of a
league playoff situation and this one was no exception. Jim defeated Jeff in a final score of 11 - 6. Jim has also won free entry into our September 8-ball Tournament. Congratulations Jim. Shotze’s has reinstated the Monday Night 9-ball Money Tournament and its open to all comers. Free practice from 6pm and start time is 7pm and there is a $10 entry fee. We are requiring (14) players to have Shotze’s add $50 a night and only taking up to (32) players max. This started on May 7th and will continue until August 20th. Come on down and join us. In the winners bracket, Colin Mazaika, Dec 2006 Champion, went undefeated with victories over Mitch Galbreath (61), Braden Murphy (29), Marshall Williams (95), Sylvester Coronado (73), Kristen Cobb (70), and Jason Hardcastle (73). His opponent in the finals, David Vincent, Dec 2006 2nd place finalist, had victories over John Alaniz (38), Paul Mattox (45), Taylor Townsend (90), before losing to Jason Hardcastle (73). In the one loss side, David beat Jeff Gregory (115), Jeff Heath (95), Kristen Cobb (70), Ed Ames (111), and returned to beat Jason Hardcastle. In the finals, a true double Elimination, David Vincent had to beat Colin Mazaika twice. In the first set, David got out to an early lead and won the set 8-4. In the second set, David got out to a quick start at 6-1. Colin found his game and won the next six game to make it 7-6 in Colin’s favor. At that point, David Vincent found some magic and won the next two games and the Championship. Congratulation to both players for playing great pool, and special thank you to Teresa Mojica for running such a smooth tournament. Finally on Sunday night May 27, 2007 we had our weekly USPPA 9-Ball tournament with the winner taking home 1/2 of the total purse. We had 25 players with the first prize being $310. This tournament was held on 04/07/07, singles, 8ball. There were 32 participants. 1-8 places were paid. This was the second annual memorial pool tournament for Josh Osterman. Josh was tragically killed in a vehicle accident on 07/14/05, he was only 24 years old. The top picture is of Josh’s good friends who organized the pool tournament. They are from left to right, Rodney Johnson, Justin Salcido, & Daniel Garrison. In 2005 they were planning on playing in the Anaconda pool league with Josh as the “Pink Panthers”, that is why their T-shirts have a logo of a panther. We are at the close of another calendar league year, which consisted of 3 sessions: summer, fall and spring. Teams from each session participating in the 5-8 person open format that win the title of ‘division champion’ earn entry into the annual Local Team Championship (LTC). In addition, any team that finishes ‘high points’ in their division, prior to session play-offs, also earns a seat into the LTC tournament. The same applies for any team in the 3-5 person open format during the summer and fall sessions, as long as their team participates during the spring session in the 5-8 person open format. This year, 8 Ball LTC’s will be held from April 30 - May 6 at Tacoma’s City Lights Spirits & Pool. Teams that win this tournament advance to the National Team Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. The amount of teams that can qualify for the NTC is based on local area team count. This year, 3 teams from Pierce County in the 8 Ball format will compete to win the 1st place prize of $25,000. The Bohica Boys from City Lights Spirits & Pool (Clark Smith, Larry Maes and Sean Gray) won the Division Championship title. Since this team had already won a division title from the previous session and earned a seat into the annual Masters Championship Tournament (MCT), the team that finished in second place would earn a placement. This year the MCT was a oneday event, taking place on April 23 at City Lights Spirits & Pool. APA NATIONAL TEAM PIERCE COUNTY, WA 8 BALL TEAMS TO COMPETE by Michelle Barkdoll Three from thirty eight 8-Ball teams qualified April 30 thru May 6, through their top performance at the Local Team Championship (LTC), to compete at the 2007 APA National Team Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. Tacoma’s City Lights Spirits & Pool in Tacoma, WA hosted this weeklong event. These teams will be vying for a national title and first place prize money of $25,000. The tournament takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino August 20-25. A team to earn eligibility into the The Replacements annual LTC tournament must end a regular session as ‘high point finisher’ within their division or win a division play-off therefore becoming a ‘division champion’. The Replacements is a first year team that branched off from another group, who also plays out of the Lake City Tavern. The team qualified during the fall session for LTC’s by finishing with high points in their division, prior to session play-offs. The team continued through play-offs and won to earn a ‘division champion’ title. Sevell Brown, the team captain
and a couple other team members have never been to Las Vegas, so this will really be quite an experience for them. My suggestion, fly down there a day or two early and get the ‘Vegas Wow’ out of your system so you can concentrate on playing pool! The Replacements defeated quite an accomplished team to win their board. The All Bro. Team plays for the Elks Lodge #1450 in Puyallup. The captain, Steve Scholz, and the majority of his team, have been playing APA for twelve years and have competed at the NTC twice before. Third time will be a charm! On The Snap team has been playing together for quite some time. The core of the team also plays on a 3-5person 8 Ball format. Playoffs just wouldn’t be normal without this team t h e r e . Between the two nights, the team seems to always finish On The Snap high points or win a division champion title. I hope everyone saved some of the cash back winnings for this trip! Las Vegas is no foreigner to this teams captain; Robert Alston just got back from the APA National Singles Championship where he competed in the purple tier (skill level 6 and 7’s) at a chance to win the grand prize of $15,000. The opponents this team faced at the finals match, See Spot Shoot, has many veteran players. The captain, Tim McKenzie has been an active APA member for eleven years and ascertained a skill level seven. The team plays for The Right Spot in Fife and at the finals match the owner of the Right Spot, Len Ekenman, was there to root the team on. You won’t See Spot Shoot find a host location owner that gives more moral support to a team than Len does ... thanks, I know you don’t hear that as often as you should! The Hawks are no strangers to the National Team Championship. This will be the team’s second year in a row participating. Oddly enough, the team had not qualified for the LTC from summer or fall sessions and a ‘wildcard’ team tournament. Not until the end of the spring session did the team finish high enough in points to qualify them to compete in play-offs and thus won the finals match earning them a ‘division The Force champion’ title. Cutting it a little close weren’t we? Well now, the team that the Hawks played in the final match, The Force, was a team that traveled to Las

When Saturday finally ended we had eight teams coming back Sunday. Four of the local teams, both Tacoma teams, one from up north and “Dred” from Bellevue. Now that means 13 teams are out of the tournament, we’ve all been there it sucks! Though everyone I talked to said they had a good time and the tournament ran smooth. I couldn’t ask for more than that. 10 am Sunday morning its “Dred” vs Shotze’s and PC III vs Schooner Tavern from Tacoma. Two fantastic matches both go hill hill, Shotze’s and Schooner Tavern advance. Shotze’s goes to PC’s and plays “Dooleys Dogs” who have been waiting patiently and they get by them and come back to the Soundview. The Schooner goes to the White Buffalo and has to play the other Tacoma team “Money Shot”. “Money Shot” gets it and plays “Dooleys Dogs” at Soundview. Oh yeah, the point match took place when everybody left. It was “The Bald Spots” who got there by defeating “Represent” from Burien. The Schooner and “Doolies Dogs” in a hill hill thriller. The other point match team ...The Soundview, of course my team, why do you think I put on this tournament? I love team pool. We beat the White Buffalo and Shotze’s and got by “Money Shot”. We know the “Bald Spots”, because we play against each other at the American Legion open team tournament in mid February every year. It’s great fun. So we start out kind of close and then they pound us. Now we get to watch “Dooleys Dogs” and “Money Shoot” battle for fourth place. “Money Shot” has a stacked team, master women were fine with two master men, Cindy Sliva plays right up there with any open player. Back/Street’s weekday special requires one to eat lunch and in turn one can play on a table free during lunch. Weekdays usually bring in the serious billiard players. More often than not some of them will stay and play into the night perfecting a stance, stroke or shot. Back/Street’s is smoke-free from open to 4:00 pm. The evenings bring a diverse crowd of billiard players. There will be a few 7' tables with players just wanting to have fun with their friends. Other 7' tables will host a pool league. The 9' tables have the ‘usual’ players perfecting their game and playing each other. Weekends bring tournaments to Back/Street’s. May 4th -6th brought a Pechauer Tour tournament and a packed house. The buzz is still going about the amazing players in the tournament. There has been an on-going Sunday 9-ball tournament. June 10th will bring an APA open 8-ball tournament along with a barbecue to say, “Good-bye,” to Doug and Ronni the previous and original owners of Back/Street’s and to say, “Hello,” to the new owners Rizah and Senad. Rizah and Senad want to keep the ambiance of Back/Street’s. They have small bistro tables in the front where people can play card games, chess, or just chat over a brew and burger. Offering a place where the surrounding community can gather is important to Rizah and Senad. They may bring in the popular latte drinks. And, of course, they will keep the dart boards tucked in at the front of Back/Street’s.

Winners this year were: Heidi Winkenwerder: plays out of City Lights Spirits & Pool two nights a week, one 8 Ball team and the other 9 Ball, skill level 3 and shot 80% this year. Robert Alston: plays for the Schooner Pub & Galley, played 61 matches this league year and won 55 = 90% win percentage (not too shabby for a 7). This is Robert’s 4th year in a row winning the Top Gun award - way to go! SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD All teams complete a ballot for this award, votes are tabulated and amongst those nominated a winner is decided. Portraying good sportsmanship and making a competitive sport fun is one of the main objectives in the APA. table was on and thought it must be a pool table and accepted it in payment for his help. Next he thought of me and brought it by. It was twice as long as it was wide and the inside of the upper rail was covered with a heavy canvas type of fabric because rubber had not been developed until the 19th century. There were no screws in the rail section and frame except for some very unusual fasteners to hold on the legs. I took over a year of fussing and fooling to completely restore and make a pool table out of the ink stained survivor. A 3 1/2 x 7 Valley slate fit right into the playfield and with a set of Valley rails we had a 40x80 playfield. We drilled and cut through the 4" thick outer rail and used RC designs Modern Pocket and we had a pool table. Since this table was designed to be played with a mace (a bent version of our cue - Billiard is French for a crooked stick) the playfield was only 27” high. The rail cap was removed
with a screwdriver to expose the system that held the table together without screws or bolts. I hadn’t seen this table for over 20 years, for Dr Puziss and I had a disagreement, but Sherry his wife called me and was so charming that I did go back to move and bring the table back to life. I polished the brass pocket holders changed the cushions. (They were only 20 yrs old but some of the bad stuff that Imperial pushed on us had turned to dust.) Four more coats of shellac a shampoo job on the cloth that another mechanic had installed replaced the missing plugs and cover the screws that I put in to hold the Valley rails on and the table looked like it just left the Frenchman work shop. One small problem that remains to be solved is how to remove the glue from the spot that the last mechanic left when he mis-measured and glued the spot 1 1/2" off center. Maybe we will have two spots.

(CONGRATULATIONS TO EL POOLO LOCO, Q-CLUB, RELENTLESS, RIGHT ON CUE, DARKISDE, JACK’S QUEENS & JOKERS, SOFT RACKS, AND POCKETZ.) Winners of this local team championship advance to the $500,000 APA 8-Ball National Team Championships at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Aug. 17-25. Members of APA Pool League teams became eligible to compete in the local team championship by participating in weekly league
play during this past year and placing tops in their division during the summer, fall or spring sessions. Last year, more than 600 North American teams comprised the APA 8-Ball National Team Championships field. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. More than 260,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball league play. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards.
