lined the walk areas and stands over looking tables 1-10 in the Riviera Grand Ballroom to watch such names as top U.S and international professional players such as Shane Van Boening, Roberto Gomez, Allison Fisher, and Kelly Fisher just to name a few. It is tremendously rare for spectators such as the spectrum of amateur players who play in the BCAPL every year to see up close pros of this caliber to play 8-ball, much less

The first set of finals in the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championship was the men’s and women’s Grand Master divisions which took place Monday, May 11. Both the men’s and women’s brackets were full of known names and tremendous talent. Literally several hundred other players and spectators

on 7’ tables. The matches were often close but last night the finals took place in both the men’s and women’s divisions and in both finals it was the case of the widely known vs. the lesser known. In the Men’s Grand Master Division, Shane Van Boening came from the one loss side to take on Simon Pickering who was undefeated coming into the final race to seven. The men’s field was so thick with (continued on page 10)

VEGAS! Mary Rakin is the headliner again this year, winning her 3rd BCA championship, each on a different continent. Last year she came in 2nd in the Women’s Open, so she got moved up to the Master’s division this year. To win her $4,400 paycheck, she began with a bye, then defeated Misa Carlson, Sara Miller, Debby Carmona, Betty Sessions, Gina Kim Lipsky, Tina Pawloski, and then got Tina again after Tina defeated Gina on the loser’s side. Two 5-player teams went from the Family Billiards NPL 8-ball league, not going very far, but Mary and her partner, Elmer Diwa, cashed in 13th place in Scotch Doubles, good enough for $225. Mary also won the Women’s Speed Break contest, just like she did last year. Women’s Master Singles: 1st Mary Rakin

What Are The Differences in Pool Balls?

by Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

Have you ever given any thought to why there is such a wide disparity in the prices of pool balls? Have you ever wondered if the balls themselves may be the culprits behind roll-offs in cases where the table is presumed to be level? Have you ever wondered if the balls used in professional tournaments are any different than those used in bars and pool rooms? To get to the meat of this matter, I’ll just tell you that, yes, there are definitely differences in not only Roger Long the brands of pool balls on the market, but also in the styles offered by the single leading brand. The Billiard Congress of America sets the standards for pool balls, and they say that the balls are to weigh 5-1/2 to 6 ounces and have a diameter of 2-1/4 inches, with a tolerance range of plus or minus 5 thousandths of an inch. The “book” also says the balls are to be “molded and finished in a perfect sphere.” Again, in an effort to be brief, I’ll just tell you that I have never found any brands of balls that consistently adhere to BCA specs, with the exception of Aramith balls made by Saluc SA in Belgium. Even though other brands on the market may look very similar to Aramith balls, many of them are out of round, out of balance, and out of tolerance. If they are out of round and out of balance, they will roll like eggs. If they are out of tolerance, they will leave unacceptable gaps between the balls when racked, and they will give inconsistent rebounds off of each other because of differences in where their centerlines contact. Aramith actually offers four different styles of pool balls, but only three of those are commonly encountered in circulation. The three sets are: Aramith Crown, Premier Aramith, and Super Aramith Pro. Let’s take a closer look at the three sets and see what the differences are. Aramith Crown: They maintain tolerances of plus or minus 3-5 thousandths of an inch. They can be identified by looking at the number on any of the striped balls; it will be a plain block numeral and will be in the field, rather than in the middle of the stripe. This set is great for use in homes or on coin-operated bar tables. A set of Crown balls retails for around $110.00. Premier Aramith: They maintain tolerances of plus or minus 2-3 thousandths of an inch. They have the same block style numeral as the Crown, but it is located in the middle of the stripe on the striped balls. This set is commonly used in pool rooms and better pool bars. A set of Premier balls retails for around $155.00. Super Aramith Pro: They maintain tolerances of plus or minus 1 onethousandth of an inch. At least half the balls in a set of “Super Pros” will measure exactly 2.250-inches when new. These balls can be identified by their more stylish numeral which, like the Premier, is set in the middle of the stripe. They are also polished to a higher luster than the other sets. This set is commonly used in professional tournaments. A set of Super Aramith Pro balls retails for around $250.00.

Remembering the Good Stuff

5

By Samm Diep, PoolTipJar.com © May 2009

Far too often, when we lose a match, the only thing we can remember is the freshest, most recent mistake(s) we made. Perhaps you missed an 8 ball at hill-hill? Or, maybe you hung an aggressive shot instead of playing the safety. Whatever the case may be, it’s so easy to reflect on the negative. Sometimes, we only remember the bad even after we win a match. We are our own worst critics. Samm Diep Unless you’ve just played a near flawless set, chances are the most recent error you made was not your only one. If you really wanted to rehash your faults, you could probably find other misses or bad decisions that resulted in a loss here and there; maybe some were more costly than others. It’s so much easier to be hard on ourselves. Let’s try something else. If you don’t already do this, the next time you lose a match, instead of immediately reviewing the worst shots, try thinking of the best ones. Of course, we should note the trouble shots so we can work on them, but reflecting on the positive can be just as helpful. For instance, it’s common to play another match right away once you lose your a-side match. Well, instead of beating yourself up over the 7 ball you rattled, visualize that perfect break and controlled runout you had from game three. Remember how smooth you stroked each shot and think about how it felt. You were decisive and confident. Your cue was level and your head stayed down. Yeah, so you missed the 7 ball; the same shooter broke and ran the third rack. That means you have it in you to do it again and again. When you think of your errors, counter each thought with a positive one. Visit PoolTipJar.com “random smatterings of pool thoughts, articles, & news”. Tyler Edey

The BCAPL Nationals started off with a bang as Tyler Edey of Canada won the 9-Ball Challenge for an unprecedented second year in a row. The 9-ball event, which each year kicks off the first two days of the 10 day BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships, is open to all players, amateur and professional. Top players worldwide play in this “warm up” two day division. The field was the largest yet with 221 players. $2500 was added by the BCAPL for a prize fund of $22,100. Edey will represent Canada in lieu of Alain Martel in the 2009 PartyPoker.Net World Pool Masters May 8-10. Edey beat out Curtis Fleck, Ray Lucerno, J.R Davis Jr., Glen Cameron Sr., Ike Runnels, Tim Joseph, Jason Klatt, and Sammy Cordova in order to take the hot seat. Working his way through the one loss side to meet Edey in the finals was Arizona top gun Mitch Ellerman. Considered one of the best young players in the western U.S, in the past 18 months Ellerman won the 2009 Jay Swanson Memorial, the 8-Ball division of the 2008 U.S Bar Table Championships and has been a dominant force in the competitive Desert Classic Tour. Edey, considered a highly steady player has consistently placed well in major events: top 16 in the 2008 U.S Open, 9th place in the 2008 World Cup of Pool, and 5th place in the 2008 Predator International 10-Ball Championship. Both Edey and Ellerman will be participating this year in the pro arena in the Predator event, which is held in Mitch Ellerman conjunction with the BCAPL Nationals.

NCS Nationals

CueSports International NCS 9 and 10-Ball National Championship Dates Announced CueSports International (CSI) would like to announce the National Championship Series (NCS) 9-Ball and 10-Ball National Championships are scheduled September 3-7, 2009 at the award winning Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. The NCS 9-Ball and 10-Ball national tournaments will be treated as two separate events yet held consecutively over the scheduled five-days. 9-Ball will start September 3 and finish September 5 and 10-Ball will start September 5 and finish September 7. By combining the two tournaments together players who qualify for both national events have the opportunity to save on their time and travel while getting the chance to win a U.S national champion title and expand their prize winning potential. Each of the two events will have a maximum field of 64 players. The prize fund for each separate event, based on a full 64 player field, is $32,000. Should both events have full fields the total payout for the dual NCS event would be $64,000. While players interested in playing in 9-Ball are not required to qualify for the 10-Ball event or visa-versa, it would seem they might be interested in doing so since the two events are being held consecutively. The first NCS national event, the NCS 8-Ball National Championship came close to a full field in this first year with 57 players with a prize fund of $28,500. To compete in an NCS national event players must win a spot at an NCS qualifier. Qualifiers are scheduled in area pool rooms throughout the U.S. The NCS is open to all U.S citizens and permanent residents who have resided in the United States the previous 12 consecutive months prior to the date of the qualifier in which they win an NCS spot. The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, winner of the AAA Four Diamond Award since 1977, is the most luxurious resort on the Fremont Street Experience, and consistently receives critical acclaim for exceeding customer expectations. The Golden Nugget offers more than 1,900 deluxe guest rooms and suites; a high-energy casino featuring the most popular slot and video poker machines, table games, race and sports book and poker room; nightly entertainment; worldclass restaurants; luxury spa and salon and The Tank, a year-round outdoor swimming pool complete with a live shark aquarium. In September 2005, Landry’s Restaurants, Inc. purchased the Golden Nugget hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nev., and embarked on a 14-month, $100 million renovation project, which was completed November 2006. In December 2007, the Golden Nugget completed its $60 million Phase II project, which expanded the resort west onto First Street and introduced additional entertainment, event and dining venues. The NCS is sponsored by Diamond Billiard Products, OB Cues, DELTA-13 Rack and Aramith. For more information about the National Championship Series, the Golden Nugget, the Fremont Street Experience and a list of all NCS qualifiers visit the CSI website at www.playcsipool.com, call 702-719-7665 or email Holly Ryan at holly@playcsipool.com

well known professional players that many people found themselves asking, who is Simon Pickering? Well, conventional wisdom would have had Van Boening winning the match, but it was not the case. Pickering, who hails from British Columbia, Canada has played the past 12 years in the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championship. Last year he tied for 5-6 in the Grand Master division. The Women’s Grand Master division pitted one of the strongest U.S regional women players in the county, Julia Gabriel against one of the fastest rising women professional players in the world, Yu Ram Cha from South Korea.

Both women played well and in the first set it looked that Gabriel would take Cha. The two sets were close, but it was Cha who prevailed taking first place.

Pool Wars by: Jay Helfert

On the road to hell and back with the world’s greatest money players. The influence of the movie The Hustler in 1961 gave a new and different dynamics to playing pool for the average player. Jay describes his trip across the country to where he settles on the West Coast. The big tournaments from Johnson City to the Bar Table Championships. From players like Cornbread Red, Billy Incardona, Bucktooth, Earl Strickland, Minnesota Fats, Cowboy Jimmy Moore, to a nickname that Jay picked up as Toupee Jay. But what interests me most about Pool Wars was ESPN’s desire to take pool to a new level and who stopped it. You’ll be surprised who was involved back in 1985 at Caesar’s Palace. What you don’t know about The Color of Money and Grady Sessions. When Jay witnessed a million dollars to run 10 racks of 9-ball and how it went down. Pick up a copy of The Break in July and read one of the stories.

Here are some testimonial for his book:

“Jay’s recollection of pool stories exceeds any that I’ve ever heard. His exactness in recalling events as they actually happened is amazing. There are few as qualified to write about pool action as Jay. He has always been right on the money with everything he has accomplished and this book isn’t any different.” -- Billy Incardona World 9-Ball Champion “I’ve known Jay since the 60’s. Although he loved to compete, he became more respected as a great game maker and money winner who helped out many a pool player when down on their luck. -- Danny Dilberto World All Around Champion “Jay is the ‘go to’ man in pool. He is a living historian and a source for all pool info. As an accomplished player himself, he evolved into every aspect of the sport. He has given sage advice to up-and-coming players as well as champions. Jay is a valued member of the pool community who gets a nod and a smile from all who know him.” -- Pat Fleming AccuStats Video Productions

Taking The Easy Way

By: Bob Jewett

I like to think of learning to play pool as having three separate parts or phases. In the first phase, you learn the basic mechanics of making a shot: how to chalk, how to aim, and how to stroke. In the second phase, you learn how to move the cue ball in various ways: follow, stop, draw, side spin, and speed control. In the third phase, you learn how to put together multiple shots to form a run. Most players don’t have the luxury of so much Bob Jewett practice time that they can learn the parts in order, so usually a player is still working on mechanics while trying to put sequences together. If you’re trying to run out with imperfect mechanics and only partial knowledge of how to move the cue ball, you need to limit your plan to tactics you can execute adequately if not perfectly. In the diagram is gift. Your opponent has managed to scratch at eight ball, giving you an open table with the cue ball in hand anywhere. Which group do you prefer? The standard recommended technique for planning an eight ball run-out is to work backwards starting from the eight. That works here. Here’s a hint: the runout can be done with just stop shots if you plan carefully. That is, the cue ball will not move more than an inch after pocketing each ball in your run. If you see a solution, write down the number of balls in order, and send me an email at jewett@sfbilliards.com. I’ll acknowledge the first five “correct” answers in my next column and give some drills for perfecting your stop shots.

Cue ball in hand. All stop shots. Stripes or solids?

DVPL Women’s Session

The Diablo Valley pool league brought yet another women’s session to a successful end this past April 09. This season included eleven teams and a blind in a double round format, which generated $7850. All teams got paid, top ten players got paid and plaques were given away to the two most improved players. Join us in congratulating the Farrington’s-team Right on Cue who had an excellent season and comfortably took charge of the first place spot early in the season. Mixing up her high and low scores and managing the high handicap the captain Annette stayed ahead of group and never looked back. She was supported by Ana, Tina, LouAnne, Darla and Dez. This is certainly a great mix of veterans, top shooters, upcoming and improved players.

1) Farrington’s-Right on Cue – Nancy Valdez (Dez) Tina Lux, Ana Heaney, Annette Wood, LouAnne LaFlamme, Darla Decker 2) The Player’s Club from Vinnie’s (winners of last season) made an incredible come back from the bottom of standings to climb back up to claim second place showing “game” in final two tough matches between The bitches and The Right on Cue teams. Out of 10 possible rounds they got 9. They were the first ones to feel the effect of the high handicap when they f o u n d themselves at the bottom of the pack close to the half point This team is a power house with excellent shooters, hosting our two master player players Leslie and Holly. Shawn, Deanna and Cathy completed this successful roster. They got their money back in las Vegas tournaments loosing their last match on the hill (race to 11) Vinnies-The Players Club – Shawn Modelo, Deanna Spomer, Cathy Reaves, Erin McKibben (joined the team for Vegas), Leslie Bernardi, Holly Robinson 3) A Whole Different Animal-Rack em Up Captain Kristin Eisen brought aboard Darnell and Denise Domingo, two talented shooters from Emeryville who definitely added power to the already dangerous group. Last years most improved player Lauren veteran Theresa whose game has become very solid and improved Lee Ann were part of the winning effort. This team had their best year in league by placing in the top 4 teams of

the league and gave The Players Club a challenge for second place up to the last week of play. They went to the nationals and won their money back. Congratulations to them. Rack’ Em Up-A Whole Different Animal - Lee Ann Arendtson, Theresa Teague, Lauren Rutkovitz, Kristin Eisen, Darnell Domingo, Denise Domingo 4) The Outsiders from Vinnie’s also had a decent year and managed to place fourth on the standings, after shooting well over all. This is certainly a group of veteran players you never want to take for granted. For the Outsiders Sally, Stephanie, Brenda, all veterans of the game had a consistent season. They came short a game from the Vegas money however Brenda Johnson took 9-13 in the single senior category. Vinnie’s-Outsiders-Stephanie Guinn, Cary Wolcott, Sally Harvey, Brenda Johnson, Angie Nelson 5) The Office-Get Felt lead by Jonni Smith, had their best ending in the standings of the women’s league. In the very last week of play got ahead of the Bitches Forever by taking all 5 rounds on the last night of play while the bitches only took 4.5. This group showed major improvement and took advantage of handicap system as well. For the Office we have Wheezy, Nikki and Leslie. (continued on page 27)

OTBnTV Live Real A

by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

Our journey began three days before we were to arrive in Las Vegas at the BCAPL and had arranged with Mark Griffin, owner of the league, to have OTBnTV Live on site and on the tournament floor to stream the Grand Masters and Masters events free for the pool players. Pool on the net has grown exponentially in the last several years. In what turned out to be some of the best pool played, that has been seen over the internet to date. Pros playing 8-ball on 7’ Diamond tables. Whether it was the Men’s or Women’s turn, remarkable shots were made or missed, games won and lost by the roll of the ball. Mr Griffin had set up an area in the bleachers for OTBnTV and staff to set up the filming that would prove to be a classic. From the Grand Masters to the Masters and hill-hill matches, you can watch it all on www.playbca.com and click on videos by OTBnTV. After we set up on Sunday afternoon and throughout the live streaming we were joined by Jay Helfert, Mark Griffin BCAPL Owner, Holly Ryan of CSI/NCS, Ken Shuman, Samm Diep, Bull, Mike Fieldhammer, Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth, Darlene Stinson, Mark Fenn. And interviews with Rick Donner about the refereee program, Mary Rakin before her Master Singles match, and Jennifer Barretta before her Master Team Semi-finals match. The 33rd Annual BCA Pool League 8 Ball National Championships is now in the record books. Some of the singles matches we filmed during the week were: MEN’S GRAND MASTERS: matches between Dan Louie vs Daryl Peach, Sal Butera vs Daryl Peach, Shane Van Boening vs Sal Butera and in the finals Shane Van Boening vs Simon Pickering WOMEN’S GRAND MASTERS: matches were Allison Fisher vs Yu Ram Cha, Yu Ram Cha vs Melissa Little, Yu Ram Cha vs Amy Latzko and finally Yu Ram Cha vs Julia Gabriel.

Watch all the videos o www.rackemmag.com/2009BCANationals.htm MEN’S MASTER DIVISION: saw Vince Chambers vs Danny Petralba WOMEN’S MASTER DIVISION: Gina Kim-Lipsky vs Tina Pawloski, followed by Tina Pawloski vs Mary Rakin. When this match was over Mary was exhuberant with her win and was about in tears as her father hugged her and the excitement set in (see photo lower left of Mary and her father). Masters Division Teams both Men and Women concluded the following Saturday night at the Riviera Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Up first was the Men’s Division that started early evening between the defending Mixed Masters Team 2008 of Two Stooges from Minnesota playing Young Guns from Missouri. The entire match was streamed live by www. OTBnTV.com and is available to watch for free. The Women’s Masters played afterwards with the semi-final match between NPL Chix and the New York Dolls and finals between NPL Chix from the Pacific Northwest and Table for 5 from the Chicago area. We were there filming as the match concluded at 2AM Sunday morning. There were other bonus matches filmed throughout the BCAPL Championships that www.OTBnTV.com filmed that are available to watch Free. There were 400-500 people watching the matches at any given time on the tournament floor as well as over 16,000 unique viewers overall on the internet. And at press time we have had over 6,300 additional viewers who have logged on after the live streaming to watch the videos. Needless to say these numbers at an amateur event are unparalleled and more pool players and friends and family were

Action in Real Time

on www.playbca.com m or www.ustream.tv/channel/OTBnTV-Live able to watch someone they knew or had heard of, bringing the exposure of the BCA Pool League to a new level. The BCAPL, the Greatest Pool Tournament in the World, had a community atmosphere of a family reunion. OTBnTV announced the different streamings and tournament that were going on for each of the 10 days throughout the BCAPL. We encouraged the viewer that was watching to log on to the other streaming sites such as the World Pool Masters and the Predator International 10Ball Championships and challenge matches by the Action Report. We encouraged an atmosphere of having 3-4 streamings at one time on your computer enabling the viewer that could not make the BCAPL feel like they were there. OTBnTV was sitting in the crowd filming on the 10 final tables as if we were merely a spectator. We were trying to bring to you the viewer the true experience of being on the tournament floor live just like you were there. Accompanying the free live streaming Don “Cheese” Akerlow took nearly 600 photos of the players while the matches were being streamed. Photos are available to view on the BCAPL Video Magazine page along with nearly 28 hours of video that was streamed live. You can still see the action if you haven’t had a chance to at no charge. The BCAPL did an awesome job of keeping the players updated through the live tournament brackets. This new software system gave the pool players up to date bracketing so that you could watch the progress of your favorite player or team by just checking online at cts.playbca.com/tournamenthome.aspx?tournamentid=72011 We would like to thank Mark Griffin, Holly Ryan, David Vandenberg,

and all the BCAPL staff for all their help and insight to make this live streaming possible and bringing amateur pool and it players to a new level. We’d also like to thank Ric Jones and Bad Boy Promotions and staff for all their help. And of course our sponsors, BCAPL, Riviera Casino Hotel, OB Cues, The Break, Rackem Magazine, Stroke Magazine and CuePen. com. We at OTBnTV would like to invite you to log on and watch the videos of the BCAPL. The photo galleries, which have had over 18,000 viewers, are free to download. Find your favorite photo(s) from the BCAPL Nationals in Las Vegas, download it and have it framed. If you would like to be notified of upcoming events being streamed by OTBnTV Live become a follower of our channel on www.ustream.tv. Dennis Orcollo Dominates

from Dragon Promotions Orcullo Outstanding at Predator International 10-Ball Championship The 9th Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship has ended with Filipino Dennis Orcollo dominating Ralf Souquet in the finals. Orcollo is the first ever Filipino to win the title in its nine year history. Ozone Billiards presents the 112 top players from around the globe along with top sponsor JBETpoker.net on the Dragon Promotions production at the Riviera Hotel & Casino May 11-16,2009 during the BCAPL’s National 8-Ball Championships. The 9th Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship features live scoring of the entire event on www. Predator10ball.com . In the first semi-finals, Orcollo faced fellow countryman Warren Kiamco. Kiamco had been playing well the past few years with several top 4 finishes at major events including the US Open. But once again he was not able to top his run of fourth place finishes as he trailed the whole match with Orcollo till the final 7-4 score. The other semi-finals was even more lopsided between Ralf Souquet and Alex Pagulayan. This was a rematch of the past US Open finals between the two stars, and this time the result was the same. In a flawless performance, Souquet gave Pagulayan no opportunities and defeated Alex 7-1. The finals pitted Germany vs Philippines or Europe vs Asia. Orcollo has been considered to be the best player out of the Philippines the past 2 years now, while Souquet has been dominant in finals play in major events. And with the recent years having Filipino players coming in second place to their western counterparts in several major championships, Souquet seemed to be the favorite. Fortunately for Orcollo, he was able to make his own destiny. Orcollo capitalized on a good roll from his own miss and a safety error from Ralf to take the first game. From there he built a 3-0 lead and never relinquished his lead. Souquet lost his flawless performance with a few bad safeties and a couple missed shots. Dennis was able to maintain his high level of play, and though not flawless, was strong enough for the win at 8-3. “It looks like I saved all my mistakes for the finals”, said a disappointed Souquet in his after finals speech. “But Dennis was the better player and deserves the win.” “Ralf is a very good player, but in our match he made some mistakes. He played good on Alex, so I had to play good, too. I’m very happy for this win

19

because I didn’t expect to win in this great field of players at the beginning of the tournament”, said Orcollo in his speech to the fans. World’s Largest Pool League Awards League Operator of the Year Awards LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (May 7, 2009) - The American Poolplayers Association (APA) recognized five of their top franchisees with League Operator of the Year awards during the APA Annual Convention in late April in Las Vegas. The five were selected from a group of more than 260 League Operators throughout North America with one League Operator selected from each market size. In the Level 1 Market, Joe and Carmen Bond of McCook, Neb., were honored for their performance during the past year. Steve Floyd of Shreveport, La., was the top League Operator in the Level 2 Market. In the Level 3 Market, Walter and Emily Mims of Birmingham, Ala., were selected. Marc Lancaster and Area Manager Kim Ramsey of Raleigh, N.C., were selected in the Level 4 Market. Lee and Jane Tiani from Washington, D.C. were awarded League Operators of the Year in the Level 5 Market. The APA awards a number of League Operators each year for their accomplishments in running their League area. Those selected League Operator of the Year receive a check for $1,000 and a trophy. In addition to recognizing the League Operators of the Year, the APA also awarded the Rookie and Journeyman of the Year awards. Brad Rees of Central Square, N.Y, received the Rookie of the Year Award, while John and Kelly Croft of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, were selected for the Journeymen of the Year Award. The Journeyman of the Year is presented to the top League Operator who is no longer a rookie, but not yet eligible to receive the League Operator of the Year award. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States, and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. More than 260,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9Ball league play. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards. The APA produces three major tournaments each year-the APA National Team Championships, the APA National Singles Championships and the U.S. Amateur Championship-that, together, pay out nearly $1.5 Million in cash and prizes annually! The APA and its championships are sponsored by Cuetec Cues and PoolDawg. For more information on the American Poolplayers Association, visit www.poolplayers.com.

Vernon Elliott from: Steve Booth - OnePocket.org

The family of Banks legend Vernon Elliott sadly reports that Vernon died the afternoon of May 9, 2009, after suffering a heart attack following several recent surgeries. Vernon Elliott, like fellow One Pocket Hall of Fame member ‘Cornbread Red’, was a tough country bred Kentucky road player from the old school. Except unlike Red, Vernon completely shunned the publicity of tournaments, never once playing in one. Like Red, Vernon’s fearless hustling style took him all over the country, into even the toughest of poolrooms in the toughest of neighborhoods. He is often called the ‘greatest under-cover player of all time’. As a young man he developed as a player among the great bankers of the day in the banking capital of the universe, Louisville, KY. Among Louisville’s banking legends were guys like Bob Bowles and Charlie Jones, where even Eddie Taylor was humbled now and then. A patient and observant player who could also win at 9-Ball and One Pocket, Vernon hunted the big game players, seeking out the ‘big score’, which he was very successful at. In a 2006 interview with OnePocket.org’s Steve Booth, Vernon described it this way, “I’m going to tell you something pardner, I wouldn’t let nobody (continued on page 26)

Appleton World Pool Master

Appleton Takes Masters Crown at First Attempt Darren Appleton, the reigning World 10 Ball Champion became the third ever Englishman to win the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters title following a fighting 8-4 win over Holland’s Nick Van Den Berg at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. The 33 year-old, who converted to big table pool in recent years, following an outstanding career at English 8 Ball, beat Raj Hundal, Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen en route to the final. As well as the title and magnificent trophy, Appleton takes a check for $20,000 while Van Den Berg earned half that amount. “It’s unbelievable to win the World Pool Masters,” said Appleton. “It has been my goal to win a Matchroom event and to win this is like winning another world title. “After the 10-ball victory I put a lot of expectation on myself and hopefully this will help me get in the World Cup of Pool and the Mosconi Cup. We all want to play in Matchroom tournaments and this hasn’t done me any harm.” “This gives me a lot more belief that I can go on and keep winning titles. My target has been to get in the Mosconi Cup and winning this puts me in the mix. It is every pool players dream to play in the Mosconi Cup.” Appleton won the lag but delivered an illegal break as the requisite number of balls failed to travel past the headstring. Both players had visits but it was the Dutchman who took the rack. Van den Berg, whose break had served him so well throughout the tournament came up with a dry break but his opponent missed a routine 6-ball but then made up for it with a fine 6-8 combination to level the score at 1-1. Appleton produced a legal break and a fine

long pot on the red 3 set himself up to run out the rack which he did to lead 2-1. That became 3-1 as he produced one of the best breaks of the tournament as four balls disappeared. Van den Berg had a chance after Appleton missed the red 3 into the center pocket, but he over- screwed and scratched potting the 4 ball and with ball-in-hand, Appleton moved 4-1 in front. A scratch from Darren Appleton gave ball in hand to van den Berg and the score quickly moved to 4-2. In the next a fluke from Appleton gave him a three-rack advantage after a fortunate 4-6 combination helped him. Appleton had a dry break in the eighth and the rack wasn’t a long one as van den Berg closed the gap to two thanks to a 1-9 carom. After serving him well, Van den Berg was beginning to struggle with his break. An illegal one helped Appleton inch closer to the title as he moved into a 6-3 lead in the race to 8. Fortune went with van den Berg in the tenth rack as Appleton made an illegal break and then failed with a 2-7-9 combination. The Dutchman

avoided scratching by millimeters after he potted the 6-ball and saw the cue ball hanging on the edge. He went on to win the rack to reduce the deficit to 4-6. Appleton moved to the hill after another breaking error from van den Berg - this time a dry break, and he clinched the title thanks to a 4-9 combination in the 12th rack to win by an 8-4 margin. “I probably didn’t play as well in the final as I did in the semi-final,” added Appleton. “I didn’t break as well as I had done and neither did Nick - he had three dry breaks in the final. “Nick recently won the European Championship so I had him as the favorite and had broken the best to get to the final. “He’s a great guy and we’re very good friends so we both tried to enjoy the final and was just a shame someone had to lose. “He was on a great run so to beat him in the final is a dream come true especially with the three other players that I defeated.”

A field of thirty-one began playing on a beautiful Saturday morning. By Sunday the field was whittled down and found Liz Cole sitting comfortably on the point. After an initial loss to Liz on Saturday, Carissa Biggs battled her way through the b-side of the bracket to win a rematch with Liz in the finals. Carissa jumped ahead of Liz winning the first four matches. Liz answered with fours wins to tie the match. From there, these ladies traded games to keep the match tied 5-5. Liz then won two games back to back to move ahead 7-5. In the 13th game, Carissa missed her shot on the four-ball, but managed a lucky roll kicking in the nine for the win bringing the score to 7-6. Liz, however, was not to be denied and won the next two games to win the match 9-6. Congratulations to Liz Cole on another spectacular performance! Challenge the Stars

The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) held its annual “Challenge the Stars” fundraiser on May 12th during the 9th Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship and BCA Pool League (BCAPL) National 8-Ball Championships in Las Vegas. Pros, amateurs and fans helped raise almost $5,300 to help academic scholarships, “Pool In School” and other junior billiard programs. Billiard enthusiast attending the benefit also participated in the silent auction and raffle made possible by the generous donations. Diamond Billiard Products and BCAPL provided the pool tables and arena for the festivities. A team of two dozen dedicated volunteers helped to make this event successful. A comprehensive list of all who came together to support the future of billiards through junior programs is available on the BEF website at www.BilliardEducation.org.

play cheap; if they want to play cheap, they can get somebody else. I always made ‘em bet. They always thought that I was just a damned old country boy, that I couldn’t do nothin’. I got big action everywhere I went, damn near, because I always had that ability to make ‘em bet. They didn’t ever know my real name, because I wouldn’t tell them, and I never played in a tournament, so they couldn’t find out.” Vernon Elliott was born February 18, 1938 in Kentucky. He raised a family of six by playing pool and hustling his whole life, until he was finally forced to retire in the 90’s after suffering several strokes. During his playing years, he was possessed of one of the most powerful pool strokes of all time, and if he couldn’t get a game for the money he wanted, he had an array of impossible looking proposition shots that he could win at. Once he even cashed in with Eddie Taylor on a bank shot that even the great Taylor was convinced was impossible. Vernon was inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame in recognition for Bank Pool in January, 2007.

DVPL Women’s Session The Office-Get Felt – Louise (Wheezy) Panzarella, Jonni Smith, Nikki White, Leslie Nuccio 6) For the Diablo Lanes, Bitches for ever veterans of the league Cony and Tina Mendoza tried to continue their tradition of making sure everyone who gets money earns it, and assembled a decent group of shooters for this matter. They were joined by veteran Stacy Wilson, Kacie Regan, Jess Quintana and Lynn Cage. Bitches like many of the teams in the middle struggled big time with the handicap and unfortunately were unable to make up the difference with their games. They just couldn’t find the right momentum. They had a strong start and played fair most of the session until the end when the handicap and the lack of consistency took the best of them. Bitches got their money back in Vegas, wining their first two games and loosing next two. Diablo Lanes-Bitches Forever – Tina Mendoza, Stacy Wilson, Kacie Regan, Cony Mendoza, Jess Quinata, Lynne Lage 7) Diablo Lanes Erin’s team, which is a relative new group of women shooters in the league, lead by Erin McKibben had an excellent season. With a little bit of help from the handicap they certainly provided challenges to the top seated teams. Carmel Pipper, Zorah Mariano, Theresa Williams and Monica Kappl make part of this young but aggressive group. Erin was asked to be the filth player by Players Club team in the national tournament at the Riviera. Her game is one to respect. Watch for her in the future. Diablo Valley Lanes - Erin – Teresa Williams, Carmel Piper, Erin McKibben, Monica Kappl, (Not in photo: Zorah Mariano) 8)Your Average Killers-from Rack ém up, led by Laura Tow who continue to show tenacity and competitiveness during the entire season is also another new group of shooters in our women’s league. Again, they proved to be a challenge and with the right handicap forced all teams to play their best. Like their name states, they killed a lot of higher seated team’s hopes due to their high averages. Rack Em Up-Your Average Killers – Pat Souse, Laura Tow, Kim Randolph, Cheryl Query Michelle Latimer, (Not in photos: Val Helenson) 9)AJ’s –The Tight Racks led by Brenda Clark, one of our favorite captains in the league, put together a strong group with Carol Prescott, Jenny McCary, Diane Friedman, Elizabeth Baum and veteran Lily Davis. She took this group to the nationals and they made all of us very proud by winning their money back in this competitive event. This is a team to look for in the coming seasons. Veteran Barbara Martish also helped their effort during the regular session. AJ’S -Tight Rack – Barbara Martisch, Lily Davis, Brenda Clark, Carol Prescott, Jenny McCary, Elizabeth Baum, Diane Friedman 10)1220 –Warrior’s led by Heather Outlaw is another fresh group of women relatively new to the league. They take the game seriously and continue to climb up that learning curve with their pool game. Jen Reed,

(continued from page 15)

Tacy Nichols, Deidre Hurley and Hillary Denney assisted Heather this season. 1220 Pine-Warriors - Hillary Denney, Tacy Nichols, Heather Outlaw, Deirdre Hurley, Meridith Slater, Jen Reed 11) Least but not last Carmen Milholland another veteran player in the league, led the Farrington’s team The Straight Shooters this season. She is still in the rebuilding phase and has struggled a bit finding the right mix. We, however know better that to take her and her players for granted. Farrington’s-Straight Shooters: Carmen Milholland, Patti Brown, Heather Penman, Claudia Schultz, Theresa Bales End of Womens Tournament: End of the season tournament and payout was held on May 2, 2009 at Vinnie’s Bar. The Bitches Forever reclaimed some pride and showed how challenging they can be by taking first place in the end of the season tournament Bitches $180 Denise’s $120 Final Standings and Prizes Teams 1) Farrington’s-Right on Cue $1000+$600 2) Vinnies-The Players Club $750+$400 3) Rack’ Em Up-A Whole Different Animal $650+$300 4) Vinnie’s-Outsiders $500+$200 5) The Office-Get Felt $463 6) Diablo Lanes-Bitches Forever $400 7) Diablo Lanes-Erin $363 8) Rack Em Up-Your Average Killers $288 9) AJ’S-Tight Rack $238 10) 1220 Pine-Warriors $200 11) Farrington’s-Straight Shooters $150 Top shooters 1) Leslie Armstrong $100 2) Shawn Modelo $90 3) Darla Decker $80 4) Deanna Spomer $70 5) Ana Heaney $60 6) Sally Harvey $50 7) Brenda Johnson $40 8) Denise Domingo/Annette Wood $30 9)7) Denise Domingo/Annette Wood $20 10) Angie Nelson $10 MOST IMPROVED PLAYER 09 ANNETTE WOOD 7.41 Starting Average - 8.48 Final Average Annette Wood
