On May 16, Cue-Topia Billiards in Lakewood WA held the 2015 Junior State Championships. This is the first of this event so the turn-out was small, but the players that did participate were awesome. We ran two divisions. Boys & Girls 18 and under and boys & girls 14 and under. The format was round robin, 9 ball on the 9 foot tables and a total of 7 games against each player. Players from Yakima and the Tacoma area came to play in the event. We ran two separate brackets for the age divisions and combined the boys and girls together. 18 and under competition was very close with all the players. In attendance was Richard â&#x20AC;&#x153;RJâ&#x20AC;? Vandel, Jonathan Tomasini, Isaac Rios and Eiljah Rice. After the first round all the scores were 4 to 3. Second round things started opening up a bit and in the final round came the winners: RJ ended up in fourth with 7 points, Elijah Rice in 3rd just 2 points out of 2nd place, Jonathan Tomasini in 2nd and the grand champion by only one point over 2nd place was Isaac Rios from Yakima. This qualified Isaac to play at the BEF National Championship in Aug. 2015. Congratulations Isaac. In the 14 and under division we had 5 players. Haven

Seideiman, Jacob Reygers, Daniel Sardoncillo and Tylyer Reygers. This division was dominated by 14 year old Daniel Sardiocillo from Puyallup bringing in a total of 23 points. The runner ups were: 12 year old Tyler Reygers in second winning 18 points, 13 year old Haven Seideiman in 3rd with 13 points and 8 year old Jacob Reygers just two points behind 3rd place with 11 points. Daniel Sardiocillo and Tyler had already secured spots to play at the BEF Nationals in August so the qualifying spot gets passed to third place Haven Seideiman. We had one player in the girls 14 and under division and we can say that Jesyca-Lynn Vandel completely dominated this division. Jesyca competed in the boys 14 and under division and she gave them a run for their money. Jesyca showed a lot of heart to jump in and get the job done. Congratulations to all of you for a great tournament and your great sportsmanship. We look forward to see how you stack up against the best at BEF nationals. 2015 Gallatin Valley Open Invitational Pool Tournament The 2015 Gallatin Valley Open Invitational Pool Tournament at the Barmuda Triangle (Molly Brown Bar, Scoop Bar, and Haufbrau Bar) in Bozeman, MT saw 36 players in two fields, an A and B bracket. The full payout and match pay meant that there was over $1400 in the payouts. The tournament scheme allowed for several days of VNEA doubles 8-ball with a standard bracket. Multiple sponsorship resulted in a good pot for the size of the field and a small buy-in! Local pool players are thankful to have such a supporting and consistent set of sponsors for our tournaments! Players from around Montana paid a $20 entrance fee and split games to see who come out on top! Men’s and Women’s brackets were condensed to allow larger payouts. Many of the bracket matches were an exciting and very close race to five! With the finals being a race to seven. Many hill matches made for some interesting positions. Pulled pork sandwich lunch at Scoop and food vendor in front of the Molly Brown meant we didn’t have to go far for food.

While the bracket matches had an official lag to decide the first break, the break then alternated by the opponents. Due to long play time, there was some lag in the early rounds, but it got sorted out with the ability to play on over 13 pool tables. Since the top six players got a payout, quarter of the field for the A bracket saw money and 40%+ of the B bracket. It was a tight race, with some of the players meeting a second time on their way to the top. Several players fought very hard and nearly made it to the top up thru the loser’s bracket. Cole Lininger played Shane Zampich in the first round, only to have Cole come all the way back to the top to meet in the finals. Art St. Germaine got kicked to the loser’s bracket then came right back to meet Jason Tigart in the finals and win the first round, so the A bracket required 20 games for the final. Jason Tigart won with a 7-0 finish in the second round. A very tough field! “Win Jim’s Money” 9 Ball Tournament

As is typical, we had a strong contingent of players from Eugene and up and down I-5. A total of $670 was paid out to the top 8 players. The battle for 6th place was especially interesting. One of our youngest players, Kyle Jorgenson played Matt Schimming for the right to go on. In a close match, Jorgenson prevailed. Kyle Jorgenson claimed his spot for 4th place match. He faced Kyle Seltman,

last months 2nd place finisher. Everyone picked Kyle to win. J In a tough loss, Jorgenson claimed 4th place and $50. Jorgenson, 16, was elated at his performance and his prize. Kyle Seltmann faced Landon Rowden for the right to meet Joseph Farmer for 1st. Rowden took Seltmann to 7 games before subduing Seltmann. Seltmann claimed 3rd place an a prize of $90. Farmer had been sitting for awhile, and Rowden ripped out to a 3 to 1 in a 6 -4 race. Rowden was on the hill needing one win to claim the 1st prize of $ 280. Farmer snapped out of it and took the last 5

games to emphatically claim his prize, having gone undefeated on the day. Rowden settled for 2nd and $ 160. Close matches ruled the tournament. Jim’s handicapping system consistently draws hill/ hill matches. Competitive tension is a constant throughout. 14.1 Straight Pool Alive and Well at Sam’s The monthly 14.1 Tournament at Sam’s Hollywood Billiards in Portland, OR pitted ten stalwarts of the game against each other in a three stage round-robin of races to 50. The top four players made the cut to play for the money in the two-stage single elimination. Next open tournament Sunday morning June 7, sign up by 10:30, play at 11. Thanks to Valerie for providing such an oasis for local straight pool players to polish their game. Most days of the week will find half a dozen 14.1 matches taking place on the sweet vintage 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables. wins 5th Annual Martha Hartsell Memorial On April 25-26, 2015, the NWPA’s second tour stop of 2015 was hosted by The Cue Ball in Salem, OR. The Cue Ball has supported our tour from the very beginning and we would like to thank Jim Lebold for all that he does for women’s pool. Martha Hartsell was a fierce competitor whose life was cut short by cancer in 2010. Many of the women on tour were good friends with Martha and in her honor, continue to play the game that she loved, making lifelong friends and rivals along the way. round byes, but play sped right along. Tour players spent the remainder of their Saturday at Jake’s Bar, just down the road for ribeyes and bartable action, an annual tradition for this event. Sunday morning, only eight players remained. A side match ups included Jing Liu vs. Carissa Biggs and Liz Cole vs. Suwanna Matarazzo. Jing and Suwanna both advanced through their morning matches, and then squared off for the hot seat. 2014 Tour Champion, Jing, defeated Suwanna 7-2 to earn her spot in the final while the other players duked it out to see who would join her. B side match ups included Rebecca Slyter vs. Melyssa Chasteen and Dara Koch vs. Suzanne Smith. Melyssa and Suzanne both advanced through their morning matches by the score of 6-3 and 6-2. Fresh off her first loss, Liz rallied back to dominate 6-0, while Melyssa narrowly advanced over Carissa 6-5. Liz then squared off against Melyssa (her first loss had also been to Liz). Liz maintained a lead throughout the match and advanced by the score 6-4. Liz then played Suwanna again. After allowing her first match up slip away after being up 6-2, Liz was not to be denied. She defeated Suwanna 6-4 to earn a spot in the final. 2014 #1 and #2 showed would square off in their first finals of the 2015 season. With Jing’s win, she moved up to third in overall standings (she missed the first stop), while Liz moved up to 2nd, and Suzanne maintained her position at top of the standings. Great tournament ladies! The NWPA’s next event is at Ballad Town Billiards in Forest Grove, OR on May 16-17.

One thing all pool players do is miss shots. We all miss. Pros miss easy shots, just like the rest of us – just not nearly as often or as badly. In fact, some of the early billiard games eventually became so easy for some players that they had to be abandoned. Missing is what makes the game compelling. There are many types of misses. Failing to pocket the intended ball in the intended pocket is obviously a miss, but there are also position misses and strategic errors to contend with. Missing not only costs us games – it’s often embarrassing. We miss shots we “should” be able to make 100 times out of 100. Better players don’t miss as frequently or by as much, but they still suffer the same humiliation because they have greater expectations of themselves. One old-time road player told me that when he was a teenager learning the game, whenever he missed a makeable shot, he would shoot it in his next practice session until he made it 100 times in a row! This might be a little over the top, but this guy eventually became one of the top road players in the 60’s. So, we all miss and we all want to miss less. I developed a simple method that helps identify why and how we are missing, on the premise that if I know what my problem is, I have a better chance of being able to fix it. Here’s the drill: Get a notepad. Put it by your table at home, or use a pocket size pad you can take to the bar or poolroom. Record your next 100 misses. Every time you miss, write down as best you can the type of miss and the deepest truth you can about why you missed. By “type” of miss, I mean physically how and why did you miss? Overcut, undercut, shot too hard, misjudged throw, used

too much english, shot was too difficult, etc. By “why” you missed, I mean psychologically why did you miss? This is harder to get at. Perhaps you missed because you weren’t paying attention, or were intimidated, in a hurry, nervous, thinking about the great shot you just made, knew you were off but didn’t stop, changed aim after you went down, didn’t focus because it was an easy shot, lack of confidence, off balance, distracted, undecided on position plan, etc. – any of a hundred possibilities. This is difficult because it calls for you to admit these errors and shortcomings and write them down. Please do this practice. You don’t know what you’ll find, but I guarantee you’ll find something useful. In my case, for example, I quickly found that physically I was missing 80% of my shots by undercutting, and most of those were when I was cutting the ball to the left. This can be corrected, but I would not have believed I was off this consistently without this drill to convince me. My position misses tended to be misses on the long side – rolling too far. Also fixable, now that I know that’s my tendency. Psychologically, I found no obvious pattern. I lost concentration here and there, and skipped my preshot routine a couple of times. Nothing chronic, but still, helpful to have it pointed out so clearly. It’s hard to face the truth about our shortcomings. This drill puts it right in your face. If you make the effort to learn about your misses, and then you find ways to improve the things that are holding you back, you have to get better. A big part of excellence at pool is how well you recover from error. Not just the big, missedthe-shot-and-gave-away-the-game errors, but also the ongoing position adjustments, the runs of “bad luck”, your opponent’s good rolls, the equipment faults (“I was robbed by that pocket”), and so on. You’re going to miss. Accept it, study it, learn from it, get a little better. Start today.

In January, we talked about how to run a tournament. I’d like to share with you an experience where they did almost everything right. This happened in Vegas, so I hope I’m not breaking any rules by sharing this! I recently had the pleasure of participating in the American CueSports National Championships at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. It was my first time playing in this format, which is very similar to the BCA. When I found out that there were approximately 500 people participating, I thought there was no way it would compare to the BCAPL tournaments I have attended in the past, boasting almost 10 times that number. I imagined a tiny room, frazzled tournament directors trying to keep up with table assignments, poorly maintained tables, and in general just mass confusion and chaos. I couldn’t have been more wrong! The conference rooms that were used were huge, and they had about 120 tables available. All of them were Valley tables, were very well maintained, and were open for practice at any time, as long as you weren’t next to a live match. The walk from my room to the table took no more than 5 minutes. A short elevator trip to the casino floor, a walk down the corridor and down a flight of escalators, and I was there. Anyone who has played in the BCAPL at the Rio (or the Riv before they moved) knows how rough it can be to get to the event from their room: Aurora ran to our room to get my chalk once, and it took her 20 minutes round-trip! As I mentioned in the January article, time management is very important in running a good tournament. The ACS Nationals really impressed me in this respect. I played two events – Men’s 9-ball Singles (121 participants), and Advanced Scotch Doubles (24 teams) with my partner, Shawn Modelo. She also played in the Women’s Senior 8-ball Singles 50+ (20 players). First of all, there were plenty of tables for each round, so you didn’t have to wait for a table to be available in order to play your match. Because they supplied plenty of tables, they were able to schedule every match ahead of time. If I had made it to the finals, I would have known where and when I was playing before the first round even started. This earned points from me immediately. As a person with certain dietary needs, it’s nice to know when I have time to grab a meal, or whether I have time to take a short nap in my room.

The matches were tracked live through compusport (www. compusport.us), and there were plenty of monitors around the venue to check on match results and schedules. This was also available through the web, so people at home could see as well, and players could access it via their smartphones. They even had an app that could notify you of wins/losses, when your match was about to start, and any last minute changes to the schedule. I’m a tech geek, and this was another huge bonus point from me. And this wasn’t the best part! The score sheet itself was printed and placed in a slot corresponding to your table assignment. When your match was up, you grabbed the sheet, met your opponent at the table, and played your match. There was a QR code under each person’s name. The winner of the match would take the score sheet to the tournament desk and scan the code under their name. The computer screen would immediately congratulate you, and display the information about your next match (time, table, and if available, your opponent). My phone would buzz about 2 seconds later, notifying me with this same information. My family back home also got notified that I won, and who I was playing next. Cool stuff! All systems are prone to glitches. $#!& happens, right? Somehow, ACS managed to pull this off without any hiccups (at least, for the time I was there). There were times when I was scheduled to play a Scotch Doubles match at the same time as a 9-ball match, and they handled the conflict very well. My opponent had to wait a bit, unfortunately, but it still went very smoothly. American CueSports, you have my respect and admiration. You truly “get it,” and know how to run a tournament very well. I can only hope that other associations can learn from you, and do as well. I managed a 5/6th win in 9-ball, and Shawn and I took 5/6th in Scotch Doubles as well. I will be playing in the BCAPL tournament in July: Scotch Doubles with Shawn Modelo again, and Men’s Team Open 8-ball. I am very interested to see how their tournament is run this year. DRAWING THE CUE BALL

(A version of this article first appeared in the June 2004 edition of On The Break Magazine.) Draw seems to be the hardest stroke for beginners to learn. A major problem is that it requires you to hit the ball well off center, and lack of chalk or an inaccurate hit can lead to miscues, embarrassment and rejection by your peers, not to mention loss of your lunch money. I’ve seen players tighten into knots whenever they had to pull the rock back. A second problem is that most draw shots need to be struck harder than for other strokes. That’s because the backspin wears off as the ball travels across the cloth, so to get it to arrive with plenty, you have to start it with more than plenty and that takes some power. Also, the cue ball slows down quickly as the draw wears off. It’s important to know that you have to do only two things to get a lot of backspin on the cue ball: hit it hard and hit it low. There are fundamentals that will help this happen more easily, like a straight stroke and a firm bridge. Did I mention that you need to chalk well? There are some who will say that to draw you have to snap your wrist, or jerk the cue back after contact, or lock your wrist, or exaggerate the followthrough, or have a very loose grip, or a tight one, or any number of other bogosities. When you’re listening to such hogwash, it’s best to smile politely and say, “Oh, I’ll have to try that.” Hit the ball low and hard enough and the backspin will be there. You might even humor them and try what they say, but be sure to hit the ball low. One important concept when spinning the cue ball is the “quality” of the spin. This refers to how much spin you get on the cue ball for the amount of speed it has. It’s easy for anyone to get a little draw with a high-speed hit, but much tougher to get a bunch with a relatively soft hit. The diagram shows a drill to work on this aspect. You are not trying to pocket any ball on this shot. Place the object ball about on the line and the cue ball about a foot from it towards the rail. The goal is to shoot the object ball straight up the table and draw the cue ball back to the head cushion without the object ball also hitting the head cushion. You will need “high quality” draw for this shot -hitting just a little off-center won’t get it. If you can’t do it at first with the object ball that far from the cushion, move it closer so the cue ball doesn’t have as far to travel. Also, you can make it easier by having the cue ball closer to the object ball, but you risk cramping your follow through and learning bad habits. (It’s important to be able to stop the cue stick quickly for very close draw shots, but that’s not the point of this drill.) Keep your stick as level as possible -- that’s one of the

fundamentals that will help. Once you have the hang of the shot at a distance that’s comfortable for you, try moving the object ball progressively farther from the cushion, and see how far out you can get it before the shot’s impossible. When you have the draw shot down pretty well, compare it with follow: send the cue ball forward about the same distance. From the position in the diagram, send the cue ball to between the side pockets. I think you’ll find that the object ball doesn’t travel nearly as far and that it’s much easier to get consistent travel on the cue ball.

Pool is a game of ups and downs. Most pool players experience a slump at some time or another. Slumps occur when you play below your expected ability for a prolonged period of time. Most pool players do not know why they are playing bad, so they tend to look for solutions in all the wrong places. Sometimes this causes the player’s performance to drop even more. Often, the player falls deeper and deeper into despair. Pool players are often unable to break fee from the chains of this performance inhibitor because they become tense, think negative thoughts, and develop a negative attitude. The primary key to overcoming a slump it to remain positive! In order to remedy the problem, a player needs to begin by identifying the root cause. The first step should be to determine the type of slump that you are dealing with. Slumps can be either physical or mental in nature. Physical slumps are often result from some sort of change in a player’s fundamentals or mechanics. Slumps that fall into this category can be remedied quickly but require diligence to overcome. When dealing with this type of slump, my suggestion is to video tape yourself and watch your stroke in slow motion. Review the video with your pool coach or someone who is knowledgeable about stroke mechanics. You can even try to identify the problem yourself, but If you are unsure of what to look for you can enroll at Virtual Billiard Academy and receive a complete video analysis for a for a nominal fee. Mental slumps on the other hand can be much more difficult to come out of. The real problem seems to be figuring out what causes them. Mental slumps often originate from some sort of psychological problem. Psychological issues can create a prolonged decrease in performance, and they can also prolong the life of a slump that already exists. It is important to note that slumps can originate from numerous causes, and it is always important to identify anything that might be an underlying cause. Some mental game challenges that can cause or prolong slumps include: • Lack of confidence • Inability to improve • Being uncomfortable at the table • Satisfaction with current ability • Lack of motivation • Too much practice time • Putting pressure on yourself to win Here are some suggestions that will help free you from the bonds of performance slump: Remain focused on the process. Stop worrying about the results. Do not think about how poorly you have been playing. Forget about the past. Do not look at league statistics or previous tournament performances. Instead, focus on shooting one shot at a time. Do not worry about other players or how they perform. The only player you should worry about is yourself. Worrying about other players is often a distraction that can produce negativity, especially when you are in a slump. Remember to focus on your pre-shot process and your performance will start to improve over a period of time. Always remember that it is important to stay motivated and committed that the goals you set for yourself. When you are not playing well, it is easy to begin questioning your expectations. Stay patient and remind yourself why you love to play the game.

When you aim for the center of the cue ball and you’re off to the left it will deflect to the right, if you hit imperfectly to the right, it will deflect to the left......so it will veer off one of two ways. When you favor the left side of the cue ball and hit imperfectly to the left it will still deflect to the right, however, if you hit imperfectly to the right it will not defect to the left (because you’re still just hitting the center, not the other side of the cue ball). So the cue ball will veer in one direction on an imperfect hit, not two. Also, when you favor the right side of the cue ball and hit imperfectly to the right it will defect to the left, however, when a shot is imperfectly hit to the left it won’t defect to the right. So again, it will only defect in one direction on any imperfectly hit shots (I don’t gauge my game on hitting each shot perfectly, this is not possible for most humans). This is very important, because then you can adjust where you hit the pocket by your shot speed, which will give more accurate feedback on missed shots. I calibrate my shots to the center of the pocket, however, using TOI I’m actually aiming at the inside of the pocket.....if it doesn’t deflect I’ll hit the inside of the pocket, if it deflects slightly I’ll hit the center, and if it deflects more I will still hit the outside of the pocket zone.

This isn’t true for the “center ball player,” they don’t truly know why they miss a shot, because their shots can defect right, or left on a shot that’s not perfectly cued. This doesn’t give them the immediate feedback and puts them in a position of guessing why they missed, and at my level I can’t afford to guess......it may cost me the match, money, or tournament. This is how I developed such a finely tuned feel for the pocket. I see the pocket as a zone, and divide it into three parts, this is what I refer to as ‘The 3 Part Pocket System’. This is a powerful shift from how players normally view the game, the pocket and how they see margin of error in shot-making. I was known as one of the most accurate shotmakers in the history of the game, what I’m doing is sharing my technique so that others can benefit. If someone chooses not to listen, or even try what I’m suggesting, it’s entirely up to the individual. I’m the messenger, delivering the message that I learned from many champion players through the years. Without their help I would not have developed a game that has been consistent in both tournament play and high-dollar gambling sessions for many years. Jackie Karol (formerly Broadhurst) has been a pool player for as long as she can remember. She was born in Richland, WA and then moved to Philadelphia as a child. In her teen years, when some kids were looking for minimum wage jobs, Jackie was trying to setup money matches in addition to working. From Philadelphia, she moved to Denver, CO and has a degree in Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and supported her pool career along the way as a restaurant/bar owner, consultant, black jack and poker dealer and car salesperson. After years on both amateur and pro tours and numerous tournament wins including both an 8-Ball and Trick Shot National Championships, Jackie has refocused her talents toward helping others reach their dreams in pool. Moving to Chico, CA in 2010, she provides demonstrations and challenge matches for festivals and fundraisers around the country. Along with her “Angels of Billiards”, Jackie has entertained and won over crowds with her personality, skill and ability to make pool accessible to men and women of all ages. At the Chico Billiards Academy, she offers private and group lessons as well as structured courses to help people go from beginner to competitive player. She also operates a pro shop and carries cues, cases and many other supplies for both players and pool halls.

Once your fundamentals are correct and you are shooting with a straight and level cue, you need to master the stun stroke. This shot is the most important shot because it gives you a reference for cue ball positioning.

STRAIGHT-IN STUN STROKE

When you hit a stun stroke on a straight in shot, it will produce a “stop shot.” In other words, the ball stops as soon as it makes contact with the object ball. Factors that influence this are a blend of the following; cue tip location, force, follow through, and quickness (the amount of time it takes the cue tip to accelerate through the ball). There are an infinite number of blends of these variables that produce a stop shot. For example, you can use 4”of follow through with a small force OR only 1”of follow through with a large force to produce a stop shot. Play with these variables until you can manipulate each one and still get the same cue ball position. Measure your follow through by placing a ruler beside your cue tip. Then, vary the distance between the balls. Once you’ve mastered a stop shot with 12” of distance, keep increasing it by another 12”. The more distance you have, the more forward rotation or “high english” the ball picks up before it strikes the object ball. In other words, the greater the distance, the lower you must hit the cue ball to produce a stun/stop shot

Once again, place the object ball 12” away from the cue ball. But this time, put the cue ball at a 30 degree angle, so that you are aiming at half the ball to pocket it. Use the same stun stroke, and the cue ball will travel straight down the “tangent line.” This is the line that is perpendicular to the object ball at 90 degrees. The harder or quicker you hit the ball, the further it will travel down the line. This is the first step in predicting cue ball position. DO NOT move on to the next article until you are comfortable shooting Straight-In Stun Shots and Stun Strokes at an Angle at different distances. Be able to alter the variables (cue tip location, force and quickness) and get the same cue ball position.

Diablo Valley Pool League The Diablo Valley Pool League brought another session for the BCA Open league to a successful end this past March 2015. It was a single round session due to the number of teams which participate in the league. It run for 20 weeks of solid competition and at the end an unexpected team took the top honors. This league generates an average of $15,000 on a single round and as usual all teams get paid as well as the top shooter both male and female. This league is one of dedicated players thriving to excel and compete against all those who are dedicated enough to join a league that continuously has 20 teams and brings out the competitor in all. This season has a new champion team. This team has been in the fight every season but this time, they were able to keep their lead and beat the awesome group of shooters which play with Jason Williams. Jesse’s team out of Diablo Lanes has been fighting for top money for the last 7 years in the league and players like Bee Davidson and Billy Palmer have helped it placed in the top 7. Let us congratulate the group of this year, Joe Valerio, Joe Henick, Jason

Kuang, Kevin Yee, Gary Gomez and Captain Jess Quinata. . They continuously displayed team comradery, defensive skills and each player stepped up to support the other. MCMOA 35 Annual Montana VNEA State Pool Tournament th

The 35th Annual 2015 Montana VNEA State Pool Tournament was another great success. From changing our format to a fully VNEA sanctioned players in 2013 we have seen a steady increase in player’s attendance. Our 4 person team event is growing every year, from 14 teams in 2013, 24 teams in 2014 with 2 levels and yet again, an awesome increase with 32 teams in 2015. We are anticipating even more for the 2016 tournament. Singles events have increased as well with being down in the initial 2013 tournament we were happy to see a steady growth over the last two years. With new leagues starting around the state we will begin to grow this tournament into a powerful event and keeping it VNEA sanctioned to ensure even divisions throughout. With the implementation of an automated tournament software program, Compusport, this tournament ran pretty close to perfect. This software is being utilized by operators all over the world and exclusively at the VNEA World Championships in Las Vegas. It is

becoming the most efficient and cost effective tournament software available. Players are able to follow themselves along with other fellow pool players on their smart phones by downloading the app Compusport. It also has the ability to ping that person’s phone, at no cost to the person to let them know when and where their next match will be held. 14 & Under: Jerry Miller, Tanner Stoops May 21, 2015 (BEF - Denver, CO): The 2nd Annual Colorado Junior State 8-Ball Championships was held April 18, 2015 at Rack ‘Em Billiards in Aurora. This special event drew 18 juniors from all Colorado and Wyoming. Among the 18 & Under division, 16-year-old

Kyle Chewning came through the b-side to double-dip Hunter Stoops in the finals. 11-year-old Jerry Miller also came from the one-loss side to defeat Tanner Stoops in a two-set finals. Kudos to the Stoops brothers Hunter and Tanner for their runner-up finishes, playing side by side in the

finals, and congrats to all the players who participated! Some were first time tournament players. ACS Nationals May 9 - 15 The Diablo Valley Pool league held the first of a series of women’s tournaments, in preparation to the BCA nationals coming up in July, this past Saturday May 16th at Farrington’s Bar in Pleasant Hill, Ca. On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon we had 14 “brave” women show up to join the action and try to take home some “lunch” money. It was great to see some familiar faces which have been missing in action for a bit as well as seeing new faces come play with us. Let us welcome Danita and Kendra to our women’s events. Danita had a good showing in her first event , getting pass Stacey Wilson and Tina Mendoza . Jenny had an excellent tournament staying focused and in the zone. she played a close match with Kendra for the catbird seat. She however was sent to the looser side. On the looser side, Tammy Moreda and Carol Prescot fought it out to earn the right to face Jenny who would move forward to face Kendra again for the top price. Dvpool added $50 to the pot to sweeten the deal. Let’s thank our sponsor Farrington’s for allowing us to take over the bar for the day. DVPL was highly represented by two of her best players. They joined in forces to compete on the scotch doubles event. They also participated on singles evens. Congratulate our Shawn Modelo and Michael Glass for doing an awesome job at the 2015 ACS National Championship which just past this May 11., They played good enough to be able to cash in all the events. KUDOS to them. Shawn Modelo has been part of the ACS competition for 11 years. A few years ago she captured 1st on the senior Category against Linda Asleson. She shared with us that the event was very well ran and it was a pleasure to be part of it. She competed one more time against Linda who ended up capturing the 1st place on the senior category. Shawn and Linda have been competing against each other for the last 5 years. Shawn lost her first match early and proceeded to win all her matches to get to the finals again. She would however fall short in her effort and would taking second place. Michael Glass attending ACS for the first time competed in the open division and out of a field of 121 he took 5th /6th in Men’s 9-Ball for ($375). Article & photos by: Don Akerlow This year would prove to be different yet the same. The venue was changed to Minot, North Dakota some 74 miles from New Town and the Four Bears Casino. The reason - a remodel - so next year the tournament will be held at a virtually new Four Bears Casino. for the usual suspects there were no big upsets getting to the final 32 in the open division. The calcutta was held before the re-draw on Saturday night. The auctioneer had, to me, an unusual way of auctioning the players. Something I had never seen before. I have been in dozens of player auctions and been to many more. The way it usually goes - you start at say $50, then it goes to $100 - $200 - $300 and so on. What I found so unique, the auctioneer started at $500 or $1,000 and went down or up as the case may be. It worked well. The player auction was just over $20,000. After all the money was collected, the re-draw took place and the last match started at midnight Saturday night. In the final 32, prohibited favorite SVB past champion, who was matched up with Rory Hendrickson, also a past champion. Rory was shooting lights out and won the match 6-2 putting SVB in the one loss side.And like anyone else, when you’re not shooting good or you’ve lost a tough match, if you’ve been in the situation you can become very dangerous in that one loss column. Like I have seen Shane many times before, once he gets on a roll he is smooth as silk. His play becomes more focused and he just doesn’t miss. Shane would find himself going through the losers side like a weed whacker tearing up

everyone until he ran into the gentleman that put him in the losers bracket, Rory, playing the fourth place match. And Shane would extract revenge and move onto Taylor Anderson for third place. Taylor is out of the Kansas City area. He had lost his first match on the point against John Morra. Shane would go on to face Morra in the finals. There was a crowd of some 75 interested players and spectators watching the final match. Morra, who had been shooting very well the whole tournament, would feel Shane’s quest and his own agony of defeat in the first set 6-1 or maybe it was 6-2. In the second set things would be different. It was 8-Ball after all on 7’ tables, a race to six and there were only six games played. The score was 6 to zero Shane Van Boening! Back - to - Back Champion. On a side note: I heard a rumor and hopefully that’s all it was, that SVB may be retiring in 5 years or so. Tell me that’s not true! Rachael Nadeau playing Lori Gourneau in the finals. Rachael had lost to her on the point, came back and won the 3rd place match against Joann Jacobs to play Lori in the finals. Lori winning the first set and then the second to win the championship. In the Men’s B Chris Haulkyard defeated Brent Donahue. The Women’s B Champion Val Wilhelmi defeated Tania Barnhart. All four tournaments went to a second set and was won by the player coming out of the one loss side!
