City Lights Hosts McDermott Finale S B T B PONSORED
by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow
TACOMA, WA - June 26-27, 2004 The McDermott Tour Finale went off without a hitch at Tacoma’s City Lights. Some amazing summer weather contributed to the light turnout of 47 players. There was a noticeable absence of players from the Portland area and many of the Canadian players remained in Canada to play in the Canadian 9Ball Championships. For those who did attend, the tournament had a great payout with first place receiving $1,700! To those players who stayed home, you really missed out on a great tournament, that first place prize money could have been yours!!! City Lights added $1,125 and The

Break added $2,000 to the tournament making the total payout $5,475. Andrea Saenz-Maes, tournament director, lengthened the races for the tournament in order to make the players “work” for their prize money. The A side races went to 9, the B side to 7, money rounds were a race to 9 with the finals being a single race to 13. Complaints, which normally accompany any tournament were not heard. City Lights recently recovered their tables and made their usually tight pockets larger, which helped the tournament run smoothly and complaint free. (Finale continued on page 27)

Avlon Interview D”C”A: Are you going to be issuing a press release? Mark: Yes, there should be one coming out today (see page 22). This is an extremely emotional issue. It divided the pool community nationwide and it’s sad. I don’t personally have a grudge against anyone or organization. I’m going to welcome anyone back to the Western BCA. We need to just work together and continue to have great tournaments. D”C”A: I agree one hundred percent. Mark: I’m looking forward to making the association better than it has been and the tournaments better than they have been. That’s where my focus is and I’m going to try and pull the players back together. I’m concerned that what is circulating out there is negative and reflects poorly on the association. D”C”A: I don’t want to put anything out there that’s going to make the pool players have any misconceptions about anything because I’m a player myself and it pains me not to be able to play when I go out there to cover the event. Still, I don’t get a chance to embarrass myself either. That was my first question, which you more or less went into. The biggest question for the players is are you going to be holding the regionals at Lincoln City? Mark: We have a contract with Chinook Winds through 2007. Gary Benson contacted Chinook Winds to confirm that and asked for a proposal to extend that through 2010. We also talked to Gary Benson, he is committed to running our tournaments. The look and feel of the tournaments will be the same for the players. I hope that things will be better. Instead of saying things will be the same, I’m hoping they’ll be even better. D”C”A: Are they going to be at the same time during the year? Mark: Yes. Our next November tournament is the 3rd through the 7th, our 9-Ball tournament. Our 8-Ball is scheduled for March 1st through the 6th. Those are on track, there are no changes there. D”C”A: Will you have the same events? Mark: Yes, nothing has changed. The same divisions will be available. Everything is the same. We don’t know what the entry level will be. We expect it to be less because of the division. We’re going to be working hard over the summer to recruit those players back. D”C”A: Then some players have gone over to the ACS? Mark: They have. My understanding is there is a group that is forming a new association, planning to put on a tournament. And I wish them luck. It will give players an additional choice, but again if that occurs both tournaments will be smaller than what they have been in the past. That might be unfortunate.

D”C”A: I tend to agree with that too, as long as they don’t try to hold the tournaments in close proximity of each other. Mark: That’s going to be their choice. The members that may be doing that are well aware of our dates. It’s their choice to pick their dates. I think that we have a proven track record for producing a good tournament. I’m sure we will have a
(continued from the front page)
be independent of any league system. Hopefully that will keep the referee program alive and healthy. I’m not sure where that will be over the summer but I think once the referees feel dedicated to the sport, they’ll want to avoid the politics. I will be recruiting referees for this tournament and trying to have a larger staff than in the past. D”C”A: Are you at liberty to tell me
“ The main thing I want the players to know is that there are no real changes to the Western BCA ” Mark Avlon fairly sizeable field at the tournament and I think that players when they leave are going to be happy and reassured that Western BCA is still on track. D”C”A: That’s good because I know the players are concerned about it and it’s important to them. I know the players that I’ve talked to, the majority of them would rather go to regionals than even to Vegas. And to the credit of the Western BCA, I’ve been to a lot of big tournaments whether its VNEA or BCA, it’s the best that I’ve seen. I’ve seen them as large, maybe a little larger and the Western BCA is excellent. Mark: Thank you. I appreciate that compliment. The previous board of directors has had a lot to do with making that happen. We are hoping to continue that on. D”C”A: Are there going to be any changes in the organization? Mark: There are no plans. We have a new vice president and president. The secretary is a bit divided, she basically aligned with the ACS players but felt a responsibility not to walk away at this point. Other than that, we have a meeting scheduled July 11th, a board meeting to get things rolling where we’ll be planning our tournament, thinking of the fall. All board members and player members are welcome to attend the meeting and voice their concerns but there are no fundamental changes to rules, requirements or anything. We’re going to keep as much the same as we can for one reason, to assure the players that nothing is changing. We are going to try and improve the races that people were complaining about, short races, scheduling. We’re going to try and improve those things, try to make it a better experience for the players but fundamentally the events will be the same, the same tournament director. D”C”A: What about the referees. I think they are the heart and soul of keeping the tournament going and keeping the arguments controlled – you know everybody looks at a shot differently, even though it’s the same shot and sees it differently. Mark: The referees have decided to explore their own organization that they can hire out to the BCA, APA, the ACS, TAP, whoever and
percentage wise who may be aligning which way? Mark: That is really difficult at this point to tell you. I don’t have a list of which league voted which way, because there are multiple votes per league. As an example, there is a league in Salem, Oregon, who has a league meeting tonight and they are mostly interested in regional tournaments. They were ACS at the Sunday meeting and now they are reconsidering what the future holds and maybe they should align with the BCA to insure that they can go to the 9-Ball tournament in the fall. So even though they voted one way some of these leagues and players may have a change of heart and decide to change their alignment. It’s really hard to predict. If I had to make a wild guess I’d say it’s somewhere around 50/50. The vote at the meeting was fairly close. I’m not sure that the vote really represents the entire membership though. D”C”A: I understand that. It’s probably like a proxy system where for however many players you get so many votes? Mark: Yes, for each 30 players you get 1 player representative and I’m sure many of the league operators chose to bring player reps that are sympathetic to them or their position – not all of them did
The
because many of them were split. I’m not sure it really represents the full membership. D”C”A: Basically what do you want to say that can assure the players, besides what you’ve said, how the association’s going to prosper. How it’s going to remain the same in a lot of different areas that has already been successful? Mark: The main thing I want the players to know is that there are no real changes to the Western BCA. The tournaments are still planned as scheduled in the past. The proof will be in the pudding, when they come to the tournament I believe they will walk away with a much better experience than they’ve had in the past with better races, better scheduling, better personal service by the tournament directors and association staff that is there for the tournaments. We are there to serve the players and our goal is to make it the best experience we can for them. D”C”A: You said there’s a meeting July 11th? Mark: July 11th at the Pied Piper Pizza as always. D”C”A: Are there going to be more decisions made? You’ll know about whether the other leagues will be aligning with the BCA? Mark: The items on the agenda for the meeting are basically going to be addressing the short races in the past, making sure they are adequate for the players. We need to purchase some equipment. Much of the equipment from the association belonged to board members of the association and unfortunately many of those are with the ACS. So we have things to pick up and to arrange for. We have the bylaws in the works (in the past that were never completed), changes that govern rules for the tournament. How the association should operate. Those were never finished so those will be on the (Avlon Interview continued on page 23)

WBPPA Players Speak Out A request to League Players and Operators was sent out to respond on the BCA and ACS Leagues. Both Sides were contacted and these are their responses Jean Bartholomew Sunday, June 13, at 1 pm the WBPPA board met to make their decision on staying with the BCA league system, which was recently sold to Mark Griffin, or to join the newly formed ACS (American CueSports). It was a really ugly meeting and a certain group, proBCA were there with the only agenda but to make sure it stayed that way. It did. Before the Sec/Treas. could read the financial report, it started with interruptions of Out of Order, to the point of being totally ridiculous. It continued with everything and anything being challenged. Bill Mildenberger, (President of the Assn), tried to make his report on his findings at Las Vegas meetings and was continuously verbally attacked and challenged. Under these circumstances he did very well keeping some semblance of order. In my opinion, it was shameful and people guilty of this tactic should really take a good look at themselves. This association, the WBPPA has helped pool immensely and made it respectable to go to the pool hall or bar and play leagues with your wife, girlfriend, etc. They started a Regional Tournament at the Oregon Coast to almost rival the National 8-ball in Las Vegas. It has grown to over a 2000 membership in 10 years time. Now this is all changed. Everything is split and some leagues are staying with the local BCA faction and some are going with the ACS with talk of forming another local association to affiliate with the National ACS. The National ACS is another non-profit entity, whereas the BCA will be solely owned and controlled by Mark Griffin and be for profit. Supposedly both will operate exactly as the former BCA did, at least in the beginning. The vote went to staying with the BCA, by two votes. Some of the folks attending this meeting were ecstatic and others bummed out. My personal feelings aside, I hope the average recreational player doesn’t suffer from all this. Pool is now respectable and lets try to keep it that way. Billiards popularity has gained in leaps and bounds in this area as it has across the nation. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
James Baroux Thank you for your interviews surrounding the changes revolving around the BCA/ACS. The Mark Griffin interview in particular underlines some of the fundamental elements either missing or misunderstood which are leaving the game of pool in the financial dust while the likes of tennis and golf weekly draw untold millions to the pockets of players around the world. For example: The sales of rights to the name and/or logo “BCA” whether permanent or temporary, completely dilutes, if not eliminates the ability to strengthen it, promote it, market it, solicit serious sponsorship funds around it. How can the BCA seriously present “exclusive rights” to a sponsor when you have adulterated or watered down the quality or strength of your “Mark”. This is troubling because it is, or was, a fairly significant organization on this continent with growing influence. I recently competed in Las Vegas in an attempt to better understand the industry and why the game draws such small purses for its professionals. I have come to know a few pros and I am saddened that they were unfortunately only playing for a top prize of $15,000 at the Vegas tournament. I know there’s the potential for enormous growth to the benefit of players so I’ll keep digging to figure out how we can affect positive change in the broader consciousness with respect to the greatest game. I’m now retired so I have to the time for such endeavor. Keep up the good work. All the best.
Cindy Doty “Why fix what isn’t broke” — Our board worked so hard to make all the regional tournaments run as smoothly as they could ... They put a lot of hard work into it with nothing back in return. It’s so unfortunate that it couldn’t of kept going ... Just because the BCA decided to sell the league ... really doesn’t mean anything to me, except that someone put up some hard earned money to buy it ... I have a very heavy opinion about the “For Profit and Non-Profit” issue ... which I will not elaborate on ... bottom line being, after a lot of research ... It’s not an issue ... at all ... What counts ... is how we are treated in the future. I’ve been very disheartened with the way the ACS has handled themselves ... and I’ve been very impressed with the way Mark Griffin with BCA has handled himself. I’ve been a BCA player for many years and it’s absolutely the best tournament ever run in Vegas...I think we all need to fight for it and keep it going for many more years. Thank You.
Scott McComas My name is Scott McComas. I own Jammer’s Bar & Grill in Salem, Oregon. Regarding the recent controversy pertaining to ACS as opposed to BCA. My personal preference would be to play for ACS. That would be my first preference, my second preference would be to be dual sanctioned. John Lewis has been an absolute asset to the best of my opinion and/or knowledge to the BCA in the past as well as to the pool players. I have a great deal of respect for his integrity, knowledge and just overall industry-wide respect for him. His staff was always highly thought of as well. Pertaining to the meeting, I would have to say that it was like a bunch of school children, squabbling and throwing mud against the wall to see what would stick. Bill Mildenberger and Jean Bartholomew were champions for the pool players to the best of my knowledge. I’ve always enjoyed an extremely comfortable relationship with both persons. They’ve responded to my needs on many different occasions and have done so in a friendly, professional and knowledgeable manner. To have those two people drug through the mud seems to me just a bit ridiculous. To be threatened with lawsuits if indeed a vote does not go one way is intimidating. Supposedly this is a democracy and I don’t think there was anything democratic about that meeting, whatsoever. And the people that stood in the corners and slung arrows, knowing that what they were saying was not true, should be rightfully ashamed of themselves. Bill and Jean will walk away with their heads held high rightfully so. I think that the proper thing to do is for ACS to agree to dual sanctioning system because it’s in the best interest of the players. BCA is going to become for profit, ACS supposedly is going to remain a non-profit organization, built on the same standards, principles and rules as the old BCA with some minor changes and fluctuations. I vote ACS first and dual sanctioning second. And once again I would just say shame on those people at that meeting. They must have had to go home and take some sort of antacid because they seemed very bitter.
Steve Peterson I am writing in response to the last meeting the WBPPA had on June 11, 2004 to discuss what league we wanted join since the BCA was sold to Mark Griffin. Our choices were the new BCA, or the new ACS led by former BCA league top guy John Lewis. When the vote was done it was 36-34 for the new BCA (for profit). I did not vote for the BCA, but that is the way it goes. I have two complaints about this decision, and the first one is the people that voted for the BCA do not know the facts. They say why should we jump ship, if they think about it we are jumping ship by going with the new BCA. I have been a BCA member since 1995 and John Lewis had been the top guy for the BCA leagues for many years and has the experience and my trust. Mark Griffin tried to hire him to run his league (he said no), then the BCA fired him because he was standing up for the players. This sounds like the guy I want in charge of the league I play in. Then you have Mark Griffin (who is he) a business owner that is good at his business. What experience does he have at running leagues, who is on his board? There are too many I don’t knows, and wait and sees for me to take that chance. My next complaint is the way people treat each other at these meetings. For example the way people treated Bill Mildenberger (I will not mention names, but you know who you are). They called him a liar, kept interrupting him when he spoke, kept bugging how certain things needed to be worded. Tried to discredit him because he was in favor of the ACS. Bill Mildenberger and Judy Griffith have put in a lot of hours and years and a lot of other people have also to build the WBPPA into a great league and some of the finest tournaments in the nation. So to you people that have been around 2 or 3 years, or the ones with private agendas maybe you should walk a mile in their shoes before you start slamming the people that worked so hard to bring you so much, and when you’re at it GROW UP.

SOUTHWEST OREGON APA THE FIRST APA 8-BALL TEAM TO EVER REPRESENT SOUTHWEST OREGON IS PACKING FOR THE LAS VEGAS NATIONALS by: R J Canyonville, Oregon – Saturday, June 19th, began with eight APA 8-Ball Team Division Champions from Josephine and Jackson Counties, merging on the Seven Feathers Casino/Convention Center to compete for a slot in the upcoming APA Nationals being held at the Riviera Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Those eight teams represented the following local Taverns and Billiard Parlors: The Alibi Tavern, The Old Barn, The B r e a k Room, The “G” Street Bar & Grill and The Cedarwood Saloon. Everyone was pumped and hearts were racing as the 8-Ball Regional Champions: Hope’s Bad Boys f i g u r a t i ve (l to r) TOP: Russ Ritter, Doug Pooley, Shane Caster, Sean Davidson, starting gun Adam Nordahl BOTTOM: Shelley Loar, Hope Bolien, Jeremy Hughes and Trista went off. Each and every team had worked hard to achieve this level and a chance to compete in the Nationals is the ultimate prize. The rounds past painfully slow as cheers came from some teams and sad faces dropped for others, but the applause went out 8-Ball 1st Runner-up: Royal Z for all and (l to r) Chug Marotz, Jerrie Marotz, Dan Dorsey, Amy Medina, Travis Riegel, sportsmanship (camera shy) Paul Koskela was as high as it could possibly be. After four grueling rounds there were three teams left to return on Sunday, June 20th for the final battles. The, so far, undefeated “Hope’s Bad Boys” watched as “The Ball Breakers” squared off against “The Royal Z”, each with one loss. It was an awesome display of concentration and team support with the win possibly going in either direction but “The Ball Breakers” out of The Break Room had to settle 8-Ball 2nd Runner-up: No Alibis for third place with (l to r) Prince Michalski, Scott Stewart, Doug Lengel, Ron Jackson, a money award Karalee Cates, Andy Konkol, Sandy Michalski (camera shy) Gary Smith and Bronze toned medallions. “The Royal Z” from The Old Barn now had to beat “Hope’s Bad Boys” twice to take first. Every shot in every game of each match had everyone on the edge of their seats. But “Hope’s Bad Boys” had no intention
of giving the slot up to anyone else and they took their matches for the win 1, 2, 3. The second place team also got a money award and silver toned medallions to hold onto as a reminder of this very special 9-Ball Regional Champions: Barnstormers day. (l to r) Bruce Walden, Jennifer Essick, George McKeow, Robyn Werner, The Break Room James Pineda, Brian Shahan (camera shy) Kelly Cromwell, Doug Sullivan is bursting with pride as they present the very first 8-ball team from Southwest Oregon to get this honor. “Hope’s Bad Boys” received trophies, patches, gold toned medallions and $3,250 to help them finance their trip to Las Vegas in mid August. The team has already started to plan some fund raisers to pay for the rest of their trip. This team of very close friends was among the first to join the league. Last spring they were the very first to become Division Champions. FIREHOUSE GRILL Monroe 360.794.1922 This month’s Artistic shot is from the prop/novelty/ Special Arts Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 9. To set this shot up place the bridge on the rail tops as diagramed. Place F ball’s edge, closest to bridge, flush with the back edge of the bridge. The D ball is centered between the pocket points. The cue ball and F ball can be placed anywhere in the 1 by 1 diamond square area. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball with a jump draw stroke into F ball. The F ball goes under the bridge and the cue ball jumps over the bridge and then draws back under the bridge to D ball. You must pocket both object balls as pocket letter designated. A scratch is allowed and the cue ball may contact the long rail on the way back to D ball. Here are a couple of tips to help you execute this skill shot. I place my F ball 1 & 1/4 balls distance away from the long rail. Make sure that the ball goes underneath the bridge. If it doesn’t, put something under the bridge head to raise it. I line up the cue ball with the F ball so that I’m barely cutting the F ball to the left. Now because I’m cutting the F ball to the left the cue ball will come back to the right as it draws back towards the D pocket. I place my cue ball about 1 & 1/2 balls width away from the short rail. The elevation of my cue for the jump draw stroke is about 35 degrees. My basic bridge that I use for this shot is on top of the short rail. I use a medium hard stroke for this shot. In my opinion I think BCA Hall of Famer Lou “ Machine Gun” Butera executed this shot better than anyone. You should get the owners permission before you attempt this shot. Next month’s Artistic shot will be from the Draw Discipline and has a (DOD) of 10, a great skill shot. Don’t miss it.

A Position Drill With Dice By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com
San Francisco Billiard Academy Sometimes it’s hard to maintain your interest in doing drills even though they provide the best way to correct your faults and improve your skills. Here is a drill that is more like a game, and you can even play it as a challenge game against a friend. You’ll need a pair of dice. The goal is to perfect your no-cushion position play. The object ball always goes back to the Bob Jewett spot shown, the cue ball is in hand, and you have to send the cue ball to a specific spot on the table without using the cushions. To decide where you have to send the cue ball, roll the dice. The first die sets how far along the short-rail direction your goal will be, with the side cushion you’re near being 1 and the far side cushion being 5. The second die says how far up the length of the table you need to go to. The diamond before the side pocket is 1 and the far cushion is 6. If the first die comes up 6, there is a special rule to go to the locations that are even with the spot, as shown. If you roll double sixes, change to the other side of the table and roll again. Shown are two position plays that you might make to send the cue ball to 1,5 and to 4,1. To sharpen your focus on where you want the cue ball to go to, place the dice at the target point. Consider a
Email Questions to:
shot a success if you get the cue ball within a hand-span (nine inches for me) of the goal. As you gain more experience, you can tighten up the requirement. The cue ball is shown starting from the same place for the two examples, but you’re free to move it to make the shot easier. The angle shown — roughly a half ball shot — is a good balance between thinness which gets more speed on the cue ball and fullness which makes it easier to draw and have more control. But you’ll discover those things while trying the drill as long as you try variations of cue ball placement. You can play the drill as a two-player game. The first player places a coin as the position target and shoots the first shot, leaving the cue ball in position. The second player uses a second cue ball (or object ball, if necessary) and tries to end up closer to the coin. It’s OK to hit your opponent’s ball away from the target if you have that much control. Variations: Play one or two cushions instead of no cushion. Try other positions for the object ball or use the dice to determine the position of the object ball as well. Try a fixed location for the cue ball, and see which of the locations you can get to. (As shown, I think you won’t be able to go to 6,1.) Try to visit the spots by the rail in order, and see how many you can do in a row.

Metro Sportz Bar – June 5 and 6 Amidst the record-breaking heat, sat the awesome facility of the Metro Sportz Bar. Women from all over the state turned out to play 8-ball for this event, which was the AWBT’s 4 th stop in their IX Season, and let me tell you, the action was sizzling! The finals started and, since this was a true double elimination tournament, Meiko would have to beat Edwidge in 2 backto-back matches of a race to 5. In what seemed to spectators to be a (l to r) Susan Williams, Meiko Yamanobe (1st) blink of an eye, Meiko had won the first match 5 to 0. Meiko was also dominant in the 2nd match, winning a 5 to 2 victory and claiming the 1st place spot along with the $292 prize. This was Meiko’s first time winning a main event! Great job lady! Edwidge’s outstanding 2nd place finish earned her $198. Congratulations to all 27 ladies for coming out, competing admirably and playing this game we all love! This final match only went to 1 race to 4, and Susan came out victorious, winning the first place spot along with $62. Ann went home with $33 for second place. 50/50 Drawing and Door Prizes! IMPSON SLIDES INTO FIRST McQ’s in Spokane, Washington hosted the fourth Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) tour stop of the 2004 season June 19-20th. A great supporter of the NWPA, McQ’s added $500 to the prize fund and Clay Skidmore and staff showed us why this is one of our favorite stops. This was the NWPA’s second tournament at McQ’s. And the event went so smoothly, McQ’s and the NWPA are currently in negotiations for 2005. Tournament Director Chris Rogers had all 24 players up and running by 10am Saturday morning, playing down to the final six by the end of the day Saturday.
and Kerry Impson 7-6. Kerry defeated Jo Woodward 7-1, Julie Valdez 7-3 and Mary Hopkin 7-3 before losing to Hartsell 7-6. Impson met up with Hartsell again in the final by defeating veteran player Cindy Doty 7-6. The finals would prove to be just as tough as some of the matches to get there. It seemed Impson and Hartsell would trade racks all the way through the single race to 9. And they did until the score was 7-7. At that point, Impson left Hartsell in the dust to take the last two games, $365.00, 200 points and the first place spot on the tour. (l to r) Clay Skidmore-McQ’s Manager, Kerry Impson (1st), Chris Rogers-Tournament Director
Kerry Impson, winner of the NWPA’s last tour stop at The Cue Ball in Salem, OR, had her sights set once again on top spot. With tour points leader Hsin Huang out of the country, this was Impson’s chance to move into first place. Despite Huang’s absence, the road to the finals was tough. Impson made here way through the “A”side to play Martha Hartsell of Junction City, OR for the point. In a nail biter, Hartsell defeated Impson 7-6 for the hot seat, forcing her to play another tough match against Cindy Doty before making it to the Martha Hartsell final. Hartsell made her way to the point by defeating Jackie Fitchner 7-2, Donna Totten 7-1, Cindy Doty 7-6

Kerry Resch Memorial From: Kerry Resch Tournament Directors
The third annual Kerry Resch Memorial eight-ball tournament was held over the weekend of May 15th and 16th at the Mint Bar in Libby, MT. This tournament is not to be confused with the tournament held in Helena, MT in January, its just that Kerry touched so many in the Libby area before moving to Helena, that we figured he should be remembered and honored here as well. Players showed up Friday evening at the Mint for the Calcutta and a mini-tourney. Play got underway about 8:15 pm following the Calcutta. Top honors went to Come Plourde from Galloway, BC, Johnny Siefke from Libby MT finished in second place, third place went to Jim Allen of Ronan, MT. Saturday morning saw the start of a long day of pool as we whittled down the field of players in both the men’s and women’s brackets, in order to set the stage for Sunday. The final eight guys to make it to Sunday were as follows: Matt Wolff, Kalispell; Adam King, Libby; Dale Evans, Libby; Bart McCully, Libby; Ken Rosean, Kalispell; Bob Vignali, Libby; Johnny Siefke, Libby; Rusty DeShazer, Libby. Johnny Siefke found himself in the rocking chair after defeating Adam King 5-2, Bart McCully 5-2, and Bob Vignali 5-2. McCully had defeated Dale Evans 5-2, before losing to Siefke 5-2, but then went on a tear up through the losers bracket, finishing off Rusty DeShazer 5-2, Dale Evans 5-0 and Bob Vignali 5-0, to get another match against Siefke. But for the first time in a long time it was to be Johnny’s weekend.

Without these folks’ support, things like this are not possible, so in your travels please take time to show your support to these businesses. Thanks to the Moen’s of the Mint Bar and of course their staff, all the people who helped to provide food for the weekend. We are also proud to announce $500 has been raised from everyone’s support to create a High School scholarship this year for a Libby student, in Kerry Resch’s memory. Thanks for your support.

TABLE RESTORATION In the past month lots of excitement on the home front. I finished the job of putting together the finishing touches on the Monroe table that I talked about in the May issue. The rails were in terrible shape and sure enough the rails were short, not only the end rails like the Oly Club, but also the side rails. Since this table did not have the blinds we put on Brass Pat Sheehan rosettes. The last guy who restored the table in Philadelphia had put matching veneer on the back side of the rails but missed the size and filled all his mistakes and the damage from water on the leg with a white epoxy and painted over it with a very close colored paint. For many years his short comings were not noticed but the table was in storage for a couple years and the epoxy didn’t like the temperature changes and began to crack. The owner Phil Scalley was moving back to Bloomington, Illinois and wanted the table in excellent shape. We cut 1/8” off the back of the rails and left an 1/8 slot in the rail cap so we could get an exact fit and it gave us a chance to repair all the inner damage to the rail core. We inserted 3/8” Brass tubing to set the pockets at the right height and filled the void with the epoxy and wood and redrilled the pocket bolt holes. We made up the size difference in the rails by adding 1/8” Brass plates to the corner of the rails and shaped them so they fit the rail caps and polished them to match. I found an old name plate and polished it to match all the brass fillings. The original slate was replaced some time ago with slate from a Liberty table (circa 1940-1945). Many of the lugs for the 5/16 rail bolts were missing or stripped so we remanufactured some out of 3/8” pipe and tapped them with 5/16 x 20 thread and replaced. The work went way beyond the estimate but Phil was so pleased with the work that he got out the checkbook and even gave me a nice tip. We put the slate in a crate and the table is off to Bloomingdale, Illinois. I only regret that I won’t get to see the finished product but Phil promised to send a picture. I have noticed that many tables made to copy the old timers have that problem with the lower part of the rail giving away because they do not put in the brass tube like the old Brunswick’s. Connelly and Olhausen tables have this problem. I tried in the past to repair them with Bondo. I did the 9 foot table at Ringlers with Bondo and a month later the pockets still jiggled. This time I took a 7/8” plow in the end of the rail and set in brass tubes. Pockets were never as tight. After 56 years of working on tables I am still learning something new every day. Now for the good part. I sold that Brunswick New Century Challenge to go to Bend. Again I got a big surprise. Someone had given this beautiful Quarter Sawn Oak table a coat of grey paint which I thought was a grey wash coat, but some areas were painted with grey primer and what a job it was to get off. I couldn’t sand much because the last guy had almost gone through the veneer. So four days of stripping we got down to the trouble spots that the primer was hiding. I really hate people who don’t respect the true gems they are working with and do so much damage. It’s bad enough that these old beauties have to fight nature with humidity changes, water damage, fires and sunlight, but so much of the damage is done by people who are so careless. The guys who gage their skill by how fast they can recover a table or how strong they are tightening the bolts. We just picked up a table that sat in an old farm house with a crack in the foundation and water that poured in. When we got to the house to pick it up we had to wait for the sump pump to take out 6” of water. I don’t know how many times it had been pumped out in the past but the legs were destroyed. I was not turned away by what I saw because the table brought back old memories. Dad and I moved and set up this table in 1954 for Ron Harris’ dad. It came from the Odd Fellows Hall in Boring, Oregon and we rode in the O’Neill Transfer truck to set it up and now it is going to Ron’s farm in Boardman. You know these pool tables last for generations. I love to see them passed on from generation to generation. Sometimes I lose sight of them for a while but it is great to see these old friends again. Next month I will do a story on a table that I built in 1974. I just crated it for Max E Ross to send to his house on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. The neat part is that the family kept the original invoice and pictures of Great Grandfather and Father with Max. The crating fees, shipping and finally the delivery and set up on the Island are far more than the physical value, but the memories, pride and family tradition are well worth the dollars spent. OTB

Chandler Wins .... At Last By: Dennis Winsor Recently The New Grove held its eight week 9-Ball qualifying championship with over $500 in cash & prizes and with a talented lineup of players like Rick Brunner, Larry Davis, Jeff Jimenez, J D and others. The field was tough and ready to play, but in the end it came down to Manny Fernandez and Scott Chandler. When the dust cleared The New Grove crowned a new champion, Scott Chandler. Scott has played in several of these qualifiers but seemed to stumble in the end. But this time his game was on the mark from start to finish. The tournament players would like to thank The New Grove and its staff for making this a great event. Join the action of a 9-Ball Qualifier running every Saturday night at The New Grove, 7:00 sign-up, 7:30 start and as usual the green fees are on the house. 1st Scott Chandler 2 nd Manny Fernandez rd 3 Monte Twin Jeff Jimenez 4 th Jersey Gentleman, Pat Farison 5 th OTB

Chip Pool Classic By: Dick Jones, Manager/Tournament Director
Final standings for the “Chip” Classic Pool Tournament held at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was held Saturday June 12, 2004 with a great turnout of 29 players. A special Thank You goes out to all the players that showed up and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a “Chip” Pool Tournament is I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball, Singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. You are paid immediately for every game you win, instant gratification. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the player with any chip/s left. Every player won at least one game. Everybody made money. What’s left of the prize fund is paid out to the final four players. 1st $80 Leland Flint, Three Forks 2 nd $60 Curt Watts, Bozeman 3 rd $40 Rich Robinson, Three Forks 4 th $20 Steve Spritzer, Bozeman Again, I want to thank all the players that showed up. A special thank you to Jason and Sky Tigart for coming all the way from Great Falls. What a fun day it was, thank you. OTB

ACS Board Broadens Dual-Sanction Policy From: John Lewis
The American CueSports Alliance, the new non-profit national league sanctioning body, officially began operations on June 1, 2004, and is soliciting independent leagues formally sanctioned with the Billiard Congress of America as well as other leagues from throughout the United States to sanction. ACS Board of Directors (composed of
independent league operators from throughout North America) met on June 16 and formulated a more inclusive “Dual-Sanction” policy to present more choices to the players within independent pool leagues. The following policy goes into effect immediately: Leagues sanctioned with ACS may be sanctioned with any other national pool league organization on the same night of the week if it is determined by the ACS staff that the dual sanctioning is offered solely for
the purpose of offering its players extra benefits and not for the purpose of undermining an existing ACS-sanctioned league within its area of administration. Generally, such dual-sanctioning will be approved if rival leagues within a region are able to offer the same dual-sanctioning benefits to their players. Additionally, the ACS National 9-Ball Championships will be contended at the Silver Legacy Hotel & Casino in Reno, Nevada, November 10-13,
and the ACS National 8-Ball Championships will be produced at the new, downtown Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada, April 30 May 7, 2005. dedication to the TV production and distribution over the past two years. The Open was on ESPN in the early 90’s, BCn put it on pay-per-view live in 2002 and increased the distribution in 2003 on regional cable networks. Now it’s back where it rightfully belongs, on the worldwide leader in sports.” ESPN also has an option to broadcast the Ring Game of Champions, set for Sunday, September 5, 2004 as a kickoff to the Open. This Ring Game will feature past U.S. Open Champions and will be broadcast live online at www.billiardclub.net along with BCn’s entire production of the U.S. Open 9-Ball tournament. “This is just another step in the overall plan to establish pool as a nationally recognized sport,” said Rob Sykora, BCn president. “Having the most prestigious title in professional pool on ESPN benefits everyone involved, from the players, to the room operators, to the manufactures and retailers.” “One thing’s for sure,” added Sykora, “there’ll be no shortage of opportunities to see this year’s U.S. Open, The entire event will be broadcast live online through our web site. Amar Kang suffered a first round loss to “Bee” 6-2 and then ran over the One Loss bracket opponents with wins over Roger Estelle, Jesus Q., Carl Stewart, Rezaldi Rosaluna, Chong Vang, James Williams and Paul Juarez. In the 4 th rack, Billy came up dry on the break and Amar came back and won the next two games making it a 3-2 score. Amar’s break was working well and he made 3 balls on the 6th rack and was sure to get out when he missed the shape on the 6 ball and made a great attempt to not only make a good hit, but also try to pocket the ‘hooked’ 6. The ball didn’t make it to the hole and Billy took game 6 making the score 4-2. Quick -Clean HELPFUL HINTS from: David Hodges Spitting Sputtering and Globs Sometimes the spray will give off a small glob of mist. When this happens it will leave a small damp spot that will evaporate without leaving a mark. To prevent a damp spot just use the towel before you wipe the table to pick up the glob. If you wipe the glob rather than picking it off the table you will end up with a wet spot. You should not have a problem with globing until you get to the last quarter of the can. (This is typical of all aerosol cans). When the can gets low, I tell people to clean your table at night. This allows the table plenty of time to dry. This is the only time that I shake the can while applying the cleaner. You do want to use all that is in the can.

Rodney Morris (1st)
RENO, NV – June 8-13, 2004 The Sands Regency Hotel and Casino hosted yet another Reno Open (39) and had a field of 196 players. First place receiving $12,000 always guarantees a great playing field. Many of the top names in pool were vying for top honors. Rodney Morris took top honors and also found time to get married while in Reno for the tournament. Morris faced few challenging matches on his way to the finals and went undefeated on his way to the hot seat. In
the match for the hot seat Morris defeated Cliff Joyner 9-0. Joyner defeated Alex Pagulayan 9-7 from the one loss side to again face Morris in the finals. Joyner started out winning the first game but play went back and forth with Morris finally pulling ahead 5-3. After that Joyner won his next and final game of the match. From there on Morris dominated the game and gave Joyner little chance to shoot. The final score was 9-4 and Morris walked away with the first place prize money of $12,000. (Reno Results continued on page 22)
USPPA RENO, NV – June 3-7, 2004 Tony “T-Rex” Chohan has won the 2004 USPPA Pro Am Classic held at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino. Tony came through the winners side unscathed until he met Richard Burns. Tony is a 144 rated player by the USPPA system and Richard is rated 160. It was a rather lopsided loss that sent Tony to the one loss side (8-3). Tony then beat Ross Fregoso and Ed Ames on the one loss side to again face Richard Burns who had lost his match with Gerardo Jamito Tony Chohan for the hot seat. Tony was not about to be beat again and after going hill-hill with Richard won the match 8-7. Now Tony met Gerardo who had been unbeaten throughout the tournament. It was a true double elimination final and Tony had to beat Gerardo twice 83 and 8-5 to secure his place in the history books with the win. ACS National Championships from: John Lewis, ACS Executive Director
Cecil Messer, President of the newly-formed American CueSports Alliance, has announced dates and locations for the 2004 ACS National 9-Ball Championships and 2005 ACS National 8-Ball Championships, both of which are to be conducted in Reno, Nevada. The Silver Legacy Hotel & Casino will host the inaugural ACS National 9-Ball Championships, November 10-13, 2004, and the Silver Legacy will co-host - with the brand new downtown Reno Events Center - the ACS National 8-Ball Championships, April 30 through May 7, 2005. The American CueSports Alliance will begin their physical operations on June 1, 2004, as a new national governing body and non-profit national league sanctioning body. Mr. Messer, in an address to over one hundred independent league operators at the Stardust Convention Center in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 18, was pleased to note that “the ACS formation board of directors, primarily composed of the elected Presidents of the various BCA state associations, had been working diligently behind the scenes to establish these events in the few weeks since forming the association.” Many former BCA-sanctioned leagues have committed to sanctioning with the new national non-profit association to ensure the success of these inaugural championships. Capri Glassware Partners with WPBA Tour Charlotte, NC – The Women’s Professional Billiard Association, the world’s most renowned professional billiard organization, announced a retail licensing agreement with AAA Glassware (dba Capri Glassware), a prominent CA-based glassware manufacturer. Under the terms of the agreement, Capri Glassware will manufacture and mass market a line of WPBA branded glassware products including; mugs, pub glasses, shooters, tall shooters and tankards. Capri Glassware will make the products available through their nationwide distribution channels, mass and specialty retailers, billiard retailers, billiard rooms, WPBA tournaments and on the WPBA’s online Pro Shop at www.wpba.com. They expect to release the new product line to market within the next month. “I think it is fabulous that a female owned company can now be a part of supporting a professional female sports league,” says Sharon Simon, President of Capri Glassware. “We are very excited about becoming a member of the WPBA family and look forward to many years of successful partnering.” The increasing popularity of WPBA Tour has encouraged a number of manufacturers to venture into the billiards market for the first time. “We are thrilled that Capri Glassware has chosen to make their first foray into professional sports with the WPBA Tour”, says Kathy Kopacz, Director of Licensing for the WPBA Tour. “We are confident this is going to be a significant addition to our stable of products this year.” Capri Glassware joins a growing list of licensees who have recently contracted with the WPBA. Ragold Confections signed on with the WPBA last month. Recently PG&A introduced a full line of travel gear & business accessories, and earlier this year New Deal Playing Card Company released its “ergonomically-correct” decks of WPBA playing cards. Benator Publishing, LLC will soon be introducing wall calendars featuring the WPBA and its top professionals. A number of additional products are being planned for the upcoming year according to Kopacz. The WPBA governs all aspects of female professional activity; represents the media and participation rights of professional and semi-pro players; governs rules, regulations, and conduct, ethics and equipment specifications for professional sanctioned tournaments; and, develops, produces and sanctions tournaments. WPBA events are broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2 throughout the year. Capri Glassware is a 48 year old, family-owned business based in Los Angeles, CA. The company is solely owned by a female and certified as a woman owned business. The business is self-contained, all decoration is done on site, and all processes are produced in house by the Capri Glassware staff. 11. The first coin-operated billiard table was patented in 1903. The cost of a game on the first pay-for-play table: one penny. 12. Before the invention of celluloid and other new-age plastics, billiard balls were made out of ivory. The elephants can thank their present existence on the invention of plastics. Because billiard balls had to be cut from the dead center of a tusk, the average tusk yielded only 3 to 4 balls. 13. Captain Mingaud, the inventor of the leather cue tip, was imprisoned for political reasons during the French Revolution. With the help of a fellow prisoner, he was able to have a billiard table installed in his cell. It was during his incarceration that be became obsessed with the game, that he devised and perfected his invention. His obsession became so intense, that at the end of his prison term, he actually asked for a longer sentence so that he could complete his study of the game. 14. The world’s largest billiard hall was built during billiards’ “Golden Age”. “The Recreation”, a mammoth seven-story health spa, was a bustling Detroit business in the 1920’s. It featured 103 tables, 88 bowling lanes, 20 barber chairs, three manicuring stands, 14 cigar stands, a lunch counter on each floor, a restaurant that could seat 300, and an exhibition room with theater seating, that could accommodate 250 spectators. 15. The Hustler was based on a novel by Walter Tevis. The novel, however, was based on a short story he had earlier submitted to Playboy. Before “The Hustler” was released, the “Philco TV Theater” aired an episode called “Goodbye, Johnny”, which bore an uncanny resemblance to the Playboy short story. In it, Cliff Robertson portrayed the cocky young hustler, making Robertson – not Newman – the original “Fast Eddie” Felson. 16. Marquetry – the art of making pictures or designs with thin slices of wood, shell or other materials – has long enhanced the beauty of tables and cues. The art form is hardly a recent development. It has been practiced in Egypt and the Orient for more than 3,000 years. 17. Many handicapped people have played the game of pool, but the story of “Handless George” Sutton is truly one of inspiration. Born in 1870, Sutton lost both hands in a sawmill accident at the tender age of eight. Despite his handicap (and long before the days of advanced prosthetics), he studied medicine and graduated from the University of Milwaukee. During his college years, he took up the game of billiards. He became so proficient, he set an 18.2 Balkline world record with a run of 799, in 1921. He took his playing skills on the road, touring the country and amazing audiences for nearly 35 years. He left an everlasting legacy – the resolve of the human spirit – upon his death, in 1938.

Western BCA Pool Players Association Votes to Stay BCA! VANCOUVER, WA In a meeting of the Western BCA Pool Players Association (WBPPA) held Sunday June 13th a motion was made to change the name of the organization to the Western ACS Pool Players Association, to disassociate with the BCA Pool Leagues, and to align with the American CueSports Alliance (ACS). There was much discussion of the pros and cons of each national organization and representatives of both sides also fielded many questions from members. After an emotional and lengthy debate, the board took a roll-call style vote of league operators and eligible player representatives. The majority voted down the motion and the Western BCA Pool Players Association will remain affiliated with the BCA Pool Leagues. Elections were also held for President and Vice President. Mark Avlon of Lynnwood, WA was elected President. Sam Rabito of Oregon City, OR was elected Vice President. The WBPPA consists of most BCA leagues throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho; there were approximately 2000 members in the 2003-2004 season. The WBPPA produces a regional 8-Ball tournament in late February and a 9-ball tournament in early November at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, OR. The total prize money paid out last season exceeded $110,000. The dates for this year’s 9-Ball tournament are November 3rd – 7th. The association looks forward to getting this year’s leagues started and running an event even bigger than in years past! OTB

W OMEN ’ S R ACES E XTENDED !! BCA Pool League is very happy to make the following announcement. Our stated goal is to improve the opportunities for all pool players through fair governance and equitable policies. For years the women have been “shorted” in the BCA National 8-Ball Tournament held each May in Las Vegas. In both the open team event and the trophy event, the women historically have only played to 8 games, whereas the men have played to 13 games. Both men and women have the same number of players (5) and pay the same entry fee. In following our sense of fair play, the BCA Pool League is proudly announcing that effective in May 2005, the women matches will now be a race to 10. After analyzing the 2005 event, we hope to extend the races even longer. Time, number of entrants, and number of tables available will be the controlling factors. We hope this will encourage more women to experience the greatest pool tournament in the world. And we feel it is the right thing to do. In time, we would love to see the gender barrier gently fade away. Although that is not likely to happen in the near future, we hope this is recognized as a step in the right direction. Go to www.playbca.com for the most up-to-date info on the BCA Pool League. If we can help you in any way (or if you need to know the facts about BCA Pool League), please contact us at (866) USA-POOL, 719264-8300 or leagues@bcapoolleague.com. It is always our pleasure to serve you.

agenda to get those moving again, to get those completed. There are changes to the tournament as far as who’s renting tables, what kind of tables, not any major fundamental things the players really care about. It’s more like who’s going to produce our program guide and things like that. D”C”A: Is Jean Bartholomew still going to produce the program guide? Mark: I have sent an offer to her. I have asked her to submit a proposal for continuing to do that. In my opinion, she’s welcome to do that. I do not intend to exclude anyone from the association. She produces a very good player program. She benefited from that work she did. If she’d like to continue that, she can submit a proposal. There are other interested parties and I have suggested they also submit a proposal and we’ll discuss those proposals in one of our meetings. D”C”A: Thank you Mark for taking your time. BCA Is Here To Stay Yes, we are. You can’t believe everything you hear these days, can you? The BCA Pool League is alive and doing quite well, with business as usual in the Colorado Springs headquarters until our new building is completed in Las Vegas. The BCA National 8-Ball Championships remain slated at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas each May through 2010, and the BCA National 9-Ball Championships have been added for November 2004 at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas. By the way, our new building is being built by the new league CEO Mark Griffin, and Mark has reached into his pocket to fully fund the league operation “for as long as it takes.” Keep in mind that John Lewis admitted in a public forum (in Colorado Springs, June 5) that the ACS is using funds received from BCA state associations to pay for ACS operations. Please remember those words if you are asked “to switch” your state association to ACS. We believe the BCA dues that funded your state association were intended to fund events for the BCA members who paid those dues, and not as gifts or loans to another league. League Operators — Remember also, the recent notice from Steve Ducoff reminding you that after June 1st your state association voting rights mmay depend on the renewal of your sanction with the BCA Pool League. Please get your applications for league sanction in to us, so that we can validate your status as “a BCA league operator in good standing” and assure your right to vote. We recommend that you review your state association by-laws carefully. In some states, the state association by-laws impose a strict code of ethics intended to protect your rights and your state association funds. So, now is the time to ask questions of your state association officials. If they refuse to provide you the answers you need, please feel free to contact us. We will assist you anyway we can. Lastly, a personal note from me as your new CEO of the BCA Pool League. There are rumors circulating that the BCA Pool League is negotiating to sell the BCA leagues to ACS, or that the BCA Pool League is out of business. These rumors are NOT true. I (Mark Griffin) played a major part in initiating meetings with ACS officials with the goal of finding some common ground between the BCA and ACS, and with the hope that the players and operators could avoid being torn between the two league systems. I was unsuccessful, but I tried. I love the sport of pool and think that I can help improve the future of the game. I have a vision for the BCA Pool League and it is not for sale. It is the BCA that allows true dual-sanctioning, and defends the player¹s right to play on any and all leagues. Go to www.playbca.com for the most up-to-date info on the BCA Pool League. Again, if we can help you in any way (or if you need to know the facts about the BCA Pool Leagues), please contact us at (866) USA-POOL, (719) 264-8300, or leagues@bcapoolleagues.com. It is our pleasure to serve you.

Legend Parica Set for WPC Debut From: Luke Riches, Matchroom Sport Pinoy pool legend Jose Parica is set to make his debut appearance at the $350,000 WPA World Pool Championship this summer after accepting a sponsors invitation from event promoters Matchroom Sport. Despite nearly 25 years as one of the world’s premier 9-ball exponents, the Los Angeles-based Parica has never before had the opportunity to test his considerable skills against the toughest line-up the sport has to offer. The 2004 World Pool Championship takes place from 10 - 18 July at the World Trade Center, Taipei and is scheduled for over 60 hours of live broadcast on ESPN Star Sports throughout Asia. For Parica, a youthful looking 54, Taiwan has proved a happy hunting ground over the years as he has racked up two major wins - the 1980 International and the 1993 Peace Cup - in his sporadic visits to the country. The 2003 US Open runner-up said, “I’m looking forward to it. It is a fantastic championship and I will be going to do my very best to win.” Parica’s presence in the 128 man starting line-up highlights the anomalies that the World Pool Championship selection process can throw up. Despite being ranked No.2 on the UPA US Tour, Parica could not be nominated by the Billiard Congress of America as he is not an American citizen. Similarly, the Asian Pocket Billiard Union could not nominate him either, because despite Parica being a citizen of the Philippines, he does not hold a ranking within that organization. Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, “ We’re thrilled that a cueman of Parica’s talent will be with us in Taipei and I’m sure he will be a real danger to anyone he meets. “We are seriously looking at the selection procedures for 2005 with a view to giving it a complete overhaul.”

BCA Pool League Announcement from: David Vandenberghe, BCA Pool League
The BCA Board of Directors had discussed the future needs of the BCA Pool League for the past two years. They felt it necessary to find a qualified leader to take the BCA Pool League into the future, and allow the BCA to refocus o-n its mission as a trade association. They found just such a leader in Mark Griffin, and he has assumed control of the BCA Leagues as of June 1, 2004. The new business — Under new management, the basic league structure will remain intact and all league operators will be treated equally. For general league information, go to www.bcapoolleague.com Mr. Griffin may be personally contacted at a toll free phone number (866) 793-7665, at his personal cell phone number (812) 987-1461, and at his Email addresses msgriffco@aol.com and markg@bcapoolleague.com. BCA Advisory Board — we are currently forming our initial league advisory board, and we seek qualified candidates to fill the remaining board poositions. If you wish to serve, or if you wish to nominate a qualified candidate, please call Mark at (812) 987-1461. We still need representatives from all critical disciplines — especially players. New Canadian presence — we are currently talking to candidates for establishing a new Canadian BCA office and producing the BCA Canadian Championshhips. The BCA will have a strong presence in Canada. New events — The new BCA Pool League is bringing back the BCA National 9-Ball Championships for 2004. Join us November 16th-21st, 2004 at the Union Plaza Hotel and Casino — http://www.plazahotelcasino.com — in Downtown Las Vegas. The $13,000 added 9-Ball event will include singles, doubles and team divisions, and will be played on 7-foot Diamond Smart Tables. The new “BCA Grand Masters” division — the previous league management confused the boundaries between the Open and Masters divisions, and these divisions are now being redefined. We will follow the lead of the VNEA and create a higher category of Masters — which we will call the “BCA Grand Masters” division. Dual sanctioning — in order to give the players more opportunities to play, we will open up the “dual sanctioning” policy we inherited from BCA. Pool in the Olympics — The BCA once envisioned an Olympic concept that began with a new organization with seats for ALL worthy pool, snooker and billiards organizations in the US. In other words, an all inclusive organization that could represent all amateur and pro players. The BCA Pool League would wholeheartedly support such an honest attempt to get pool into the Olympics. Santos Sambajon took home the first place prize money after an exciting final match against Barry Emerson. Barry started the match slowly and found himself down 6-1, but he soon geared up and tied the match at 7. Barry went ahead on the next rack but Santos came back to finish the match 13-9. Santos had been undefeated through the tournament displaying his professional playing ability. He mad it look easy. $1,700 Santos Sambajon 1st 2 nd $1,250 Barry Emerson $725 Raul Abenojar 3 rd 4 th $400 Don Wirtiman 5/6 $200 Stan Tourangeau, Ed Hobbs 7/8 $150 Craig Dumo, Dick Trichtler 9-12 $100 Rich Geiler, Scott Chandler, Jim Boyce Karl Baughman 13-16 $75 Soud Alabdulrazaq, Tim Paget, Frankie Rocha, Randy Camantigue “The Break” would like to thank McDermott Cues for sponsoring the tour and City Lights for hosting our finale. We would also like to thank all the locations and players who have supported the tour this season. Andrea would like to invite all the players back to City Lights in September because she is bringing back the Wednesday Night “Heavy Hitters” 9-Ball Tournament. Sign-ups are at 7PM, starts at 7:30PM with a race to 3. See ya there!
McDermott Tour’s Roadmap to Success October 3rd was the start of the McDermott NorthWest 8 and 9-Ball Tour presented by “The Break”. First venue was City Lights Tacoma, Washington and was billed as a BCA warm-up for Lincoln City, small table 9-ball. The field was limited to BCA players and brought in the best players from Washington and Oregon. Stan Tourangeau and Rich Geiler, two talented players in the Northwest fought a hill-hill match in the finals, with Stan coming out on top. N o r t h W e s t To u r s It was a great kick-off to the season. Troutdale, Oregon at Skyland Pub saw the first 8-Ball stop on the McDermott Tour on October 11th. Pool players packed the pub for play on three 4 x 8 Valleys and four 3.5 x 7 bar boxes which made the tournament challenging and full of surprises. Local talent Glenn Atwell played strong the entire tournament and went undefeated to win. The spectators were treated to some very tough play by all the participants and everyone found the final match between Glen Atwell and Mike Stevens riveting. Next up on the circuit was Let’s Play Billiards in Forest Grove, Oregon, November 1st. This was again a 9-Ball stop and was shaping up to have a strong field of 48 players. The actual count on the day of play was far below this expected number but the owners, John Campbell and Gary French still added the $1,000 to the pot. Darin Walding the tournament director remarked, “Isn’t it strange to see more heart from a room owner than from Northwest pool players? The tournament was successful with or without a full field, it was disappointing to me to have heard throughout the years how there are no good tournaments in Oregon, and when we do have a strong added pot, the players call in sick? I think the pool players of the Northwest at least owe an apology for not supporting pool, or at least the integrity to not whine about lack of events in the Portland area.” Everyone enjoyed the tournament and Brett Seyler took top honors. The tour now turned North to City Lights in Tacoma for a Thanksgiving weekend 9-Ball tournament. This time the play was on the 9 foot tables and the house was packed with 61 players all vying for their share of the $3,940 pot. Even though it was a holiday weekend the field was very strong with the best players in the Northwest coming to play. Tournament Director Andrea Saenz-Maes remarked that, “It was an honor to watch and participate with some of the best in the business”. The top four were names familiar to anyone who follows pool in the Northwest, Stan Tourangeau, Dan Louie, Marlon Oliveros and Glen Atwell. Stan again took top honors at the 4th stop on the McDermott Tour. December 13th and 14th was the 5th stop at Harvey’s Billiards in Renton, Washington. The field was originally limited to 32 players but was expanded because of the demand for spots in the tournament. The field could have been twice as large with an entry of $25. Bert Harvey, owner and tournament director instituted a rule to keep the players on time. “For every 10 minutes you were late for a match you lose one game”. This rule only got used during the first matches and was not needed again. This was the first “no smoking” venue on the tour which didn’t phase the players at all. The finals saw Dan Louie and Robert Colby contending for the $700 first place prize money. Dan came out on top 11-7. The next stop moved east 300 miles and foul weather limited the field (which is not uncommon for January) at The Falls Club in Post Falls, Idaho. Expecting a full field of 64 players a heavy winter snowstorm prevented many players from making the trip but the field was still a strong 51 players. This tournament advertised a $5,000 payout due to the generosity of John Carr owner of The Falls Club and the field of players was proof of that. Nita (Finale continued on page 34)

D a r y l Peach took the winner’s trophy and £1000 first prize at the B P P PA Doncaster Open on Sunday 23rd May 2 0 0 4 , Daryl Peach (1st) and Tom Ford (2nd) beating snooker professional Tom Ford 9-3 in the final. It was Tom Ford’s first appearance in a BPPPA event, and although he didn’t get much table time against Peach, can be pleased with his performance, knocking out the likes of Martinho Correia and fellow snooker pro Nick Dyson on his way to the final. The fact that most of the top eight got no further than the last 16 stage did Daryl’s cause no harm. A crunch game came when Peach was paired up with the number two Raj Sagoo at the last 16 stage, a match he won 9-7. Raj and the most of the top eight will be hoping for a reversal of fortunes in the next double-pointer, at the end of the season. Finishing 3rd - 4th were Nick Dyson and Steve Brown, with Jay Trivedi (the highest finisher out of the top eight apart from Daryl), Wayne Lloyd, Clark Smith and Martinho Correia making up the remainder of the last eight. Other players in the money were Gareth Esprit, Norman Kay, Raj Sagoo, Steve Higton, Graham West, Paul Medati, Andy Worthington and Nigel Webb. For the updated ranking list, visit the BPPPA website at http://www.bpppa.com. The BPPPA is a non-profit organisation, limited by guarantee, dedicated to the development of the American cue sports disciplines in Great Britain. As well as promoting a range of pool disciplines, we aim to support a wider player base through our Ladies’, Youth and Disabled policies. To these ends, we are working closely with the European Pocket Billiard Federation, as the EPBF member representing Great Britain.

Corteza the Conqueror! By Bob Guerrero
Before this weekend, Lee Van Corteza was known as a gambler with a thin tournament resume. But now he’ll be known as something else: Champion of the Manila leg of the 2004 San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour. Van Van, as the 25-year-old native of Davao, Philippines is called, out dueled Bustamante in a riveting, extended-racks final, 13-11 in front of an enraptured audience at the Octagon Hall of Robinson’s Lee Van Corteza receiving trophy and winners check from Galleria. Mr Erick M Bartolome and Mr Aristeo G Puyat It was enough for Django to build a seemingly unassailable 10-6 lead. The shot of that run was a jaw-dropping two-rail bank kiss on the two off the six in rack 15. But breaking for the match, Bustamante overdrew his break shot straight into a corner pocket. That proved to be a crucial error. Corteza found an extra gear, picking off four racks in a row to level the match and send the final into extra racks. Bustamante responded with a massive break in rack 21 which claimed five balls. But Corteza made the most of his break in the next rack, snookering Django on the three and running out. Corteza drilled a series of tough shots to reach the hill, 12-11. He ran out the final rack. The lanky former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist earned US $10,000 for the win. Bustamante settled for US $5,000. OTB Information & photo courtesy of espnstar.com.

Saddler tournament director kept the tournament running smoothly. Two Canadian players found their way into the finals Edwin Montal and Mike Vidas. Edwin was undefeated throughout the tournament and beat Mike 9-6. Once again the tour ventured into Oregon to the Cue Ball in Salem, February 21st. And once again an Oregon venue didn’t get the player draw. Jim Lebold, owner even provided the players with free Lattes, Cappuccinos and donuts, not to mention the 9 foot tables covered in Championship 3030 tournament cloth. With 21 tables to play on the tournament ran quickly. The tournament directors expressed that “While the playing field lacked quantity, it certainly did not lack in quality”. This stop had past McDermott tour stop winners in contention. They were Stan Tourangeau (1st), Glen Atwell (3rd) and Brett Seyler (4th) who filled out three of the top four spots. Justin Lilje, a new player on the tour took 2nd place. March 20th and the tour turned once again to Idaho for an 8 Ball stop. This time the venue was Mingles in Moscow. The field was limited and play was held on 4.5 x 9 foot Brunswick Medalist tables covered in 860 Simonis cloth and cleaned with Quick-Clean. Skyler, owner of Mingles furnished coffee and donuts for the players and even raffled a McDermott Cue during the event. The tournament was won by Clay Belvoir who went undefeated and faced Tony Waters in the finals. Heading south 32 miles to Lewiston, Idaho, Shooters Sports Bar hosted the next stop on the tour April 3rd and 4th. Max Martin, owner with his son Zane worked very hard to put on an awesome tournament. Local television channel KLEW was present and aired the final match including an interview with Stan Tourangeau the winner. Max even went so far as to have some great looking T-shirts printed for the event. Shooters really went all out to show the players a great time in their new facility designed for tournament play. “The concensus among players, both locally and out of town was Great Place, Great People, Great Tournament.” Stan faced Wayne Boyd in the double elimination finals and won 9-4/9-3. Heading back west to Seattle and 80 miles south to Centralia, Washington home of the Olympic Club, the next stop April 24th and 25th. The six 9 foot Brunswick tables had just been recovered by Pat Sheehan who stayed to watch the tournament and clean the tables with Quick-Clean. Pat even put up $250 to the first player that could run 7 racks. No one did but the money was added to the pot. The Olympic Club is a unique venue in that it has a Hotel, Restaurant and Movie Theater along with the Poolroom in the Club. Everything you could want in a tour stop. Todd Chaput, manager even invited Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth to put on one of his famous Trick Shot Exhibitions during the tournament. This was the first tournament ever played in Centralia and everyone is excited for a return visit. The field was filled with big name players from around the Northwest and Simon Pickering of Canada, who faced Raul Abenojar in the finals, walked away with top honors. OTB
