The Big Ticket

Mike Zimmerman and Linda Carter are a pool playing couple from Washington State whose roots in the pool community go deep. Mike grew up in California’s Bay area and has been playing pool off and on for about 30 years. He has been a road player and gambled on his pool playing abilities. Linda on the other hand has been playing for about the same amount of time but has played mainly on weekends and the Women’s Tours while raising a family. Linda owns her own business, which consults with other businesses on how to promote themselves. Her son, Shawn (26), was a nationally sponsored aggressive inline skater who is also in Sales, and her daughter, Carina (19), was a model and attended the University of Washington her first year. She currently attends the WA branch of the NY College of Fashion. When asked how they met Linda remarked, “When Mike and I met, I had just won a tournament and wanted to put my winnings back into the game in the form of lessons. I was going from playing 8-ball on 8-footers with a big cue ball to 9-ball on 9footers with a small cue ball. I had already b e e n playing 8-ball since 1973 a n d b e e n successful in many leagues a n d winning s m a l l tournaments before I met

Mike. When I asked someone who the best people were for lessons, they directed me to Bill Cress and Michael at the famous 2-11 Club. I approached Mike for lessons and from then on we clicked.... And I have yet to get my lessons!” Mike has fond memories of the 211 Club as well and spoke of his experiences there saying, “Well there were two 211’s. The first time I started playing there was about 1977 or ’78. That was John Teerink’s first one. Then in around ’93 or ’94, all the poolrooms closed up around here. There were no rooms except for John’s. Then about a year later the Casino Club opened up, “Nardo’s” so we all went there because it was closer to Harry’s (Platis) house.” When I asked Mike if there was a lot of action at the 211 Club he replied, “When Harry was in the room. Harry has been the action up

here forever. There was a little action besides.” Mike was also a road player and went on the road through the South and Midwest with Dave Piona and later with Cole Dixon and recounted a few stories during our talk, “I had a gun pulled on me once in Tulsa. The guy thought I did business with somebody but I didn’t so he walked off. Back then you could end up in the swamps in the South. You had to always look around you to see who was talking. It wasn’t always the guy you were playing but the guy who was side betting. And if they gathered together and started talking you had to pay attention. Cole and I got chased out of a bar once, some guy ripped a beer can in half and was going to cut our hair (we had long hair). I saw him rip the beer can, (Cole was playing someone) and he said something to his friend like “I’m gonna cut their

hair” and we ran out of that place. We jumped in the car and spun out on the gravel and threw rocks in their faces. We came around and did it again, kind of like in the movies.” Pool has been a part of this couples life from the beginning. Linda started the Association of Cuesports for Women (ACW) in the Northwest for women to compete on a semi-pro level. This evolved into what is now the NWPA, which holds tour stops throughout the Northwest and qualifies players for the WPBA Women’s Professional Billiards Association. Mike and Linda had the distinction of being chosen to play for the illfated IPT. There were only two couples that received the nod. Obviously they were excited about participating in what was being touted as a very prestigious tour and offered the pool players a chance at legitimacy. When asked what they thought about the tour, Mike responded, “I thought it was dream land.” And Linda said, “The tour promised riches added to each tournament like never before. It was a crazy jubilant time. Hope was etched on everyone’s minds

that this was the Big Ticket to pool p l a y e r ’s Nirvana. This tour would validate them and let them carry their heads high as a legitimate career (Carter-Zimmerman continued on page 6)

Side Pockets Because of the side pocket’s design and location at the middle of each long rail, certain scoring and positional moves can be made at the side pockets that aren’t possible or feasible at the corners. Some are well known, some aren’t. Scoring and position The 8-ball at the top isn’t quite straight in. The problem for the player who wants to get position on the 9-ball at the right end rail is that the 8 can’t be cut to the left. The solution is to cut it slightly to the right with topspin. The cue ball will follow a curving path approximately as shown. The action is fairly easy to get at close quarters, but difficult if the 8-ball is more than an inch or two from the rail. At the bottom, the 7-ball is touching the cushion. If it is not too far away from the point, it can be driven straight into the pocket with a hard, full-inthe-face hit - the rubber simply bends out of the way. choice.” As everyone knows all too well, the IPT is no longer a viable entity, operating in the players best interest and providing a venue that was unprecedented in the pool world. Many of the tour’s players have been greatly disillusioned and the promises of making a good living as a touring pro have all but vanished. Kevin Trudeau is still keeping hope alive by promising the return of the IPT but the question still remains: Will the players return? Linda had some comments on that very issue, “To date, the players are still divided. Many high-profile players think he was over-reaching in his grandiose schemes. Others curse the day they heard of the IPT and Kevin Trudeau. A few great players hung up their cues for good, depressed and disillusioned with the state of pool. Legal teams have been at the ready to enforce payment, but the fact that Trudeau has now paid over half shows good intent. Never mind that he initially promised full funding from his pockets....and they are deep. The lawyers have found his offshore accounts and they are well-funded!” Mike’s take on the situation was a little different, “Just pay me off. I’d go back in a heartbeat because I know next time all the money would be in escrow. The players wouldn’t mess up again. They wouldn’t touch it unless the money was in escrow and guaranteed that everybody was going to get paid. Pool players are broke and if they aren’t broke they find a way to go broke.” You can see Mike and Linda most any night in the Seattle area playing pool and unlike some pool players that have been disillusioned they are still out there playing pool and promoting the game and waiting for another chance to take it to another level - because it’s all about the game. I would like to thank Mike and Linda for taking the time to talk with me. The future of pool does not lie in the unfulfilled promises of any shady promoter but rather in the outlook of the players themselves and what they pass on to the up and coming players in our sport. Each generation passes along their experiences and passion to the next generation.

Pagulayan Roars Billiard Factory World Summit of Pool June 13th - 16th, 2007 Riviera Hotel and Casino Las Vegas, NV

Las Vegas, Nevada- Day 4 of the Billiard Factory World Summit of Pool was filled with excitement with three top notch matches. A sold out crowd filled the newly configured arena with one featured Olhausen Championship Pro table. First up was Warren Kiamco making his ESPN debut against Francisco Bustamente, a veteran of ESPN events. Kiamco found himself fortunate with some rolls to take an early 3-1 lead, but as Bustamente proved this past March at the US Pro Tour Championship, no deficit could be too large for him to overcome.

Bustamente wins 7-4. The Pagulayan/Bustamente semi-finals proved to be exciting and bewildering with Pagulayan taking a commanding 5-2 lead. Both players were in good spirits with laughter and joking echoing the entire match. But Bustamente again fought back to 5-4 before missing a 9-Ball to tie the match and then Pagulayan tried to make the winning 9-ball with his head turned facing away, that was an easy simple short straight in shot. He missed with a genuine look of shock on his face, but ended up making the shot when Bustamente missed the 9-Ball afterwards. The final match was a re-match between The Lion and the South Dakota Kid. Van Boening trailed early on to Pagulayan, despite making just minor errors. Alex stood at 5-2 lead once again with smiles and jokes, but a few errors and Shane's awesome break and fire power soon eroded the laughing and the score stood at 5-5. Shane's break failed him in rack 11 when he scrathed in the side off the break and Pagulayan breathed heavily to run out out and broke and ran out to the 9-Ball in the next game. Making the final 9-Ball with a joyous yell, he soon stopped and screamed, "Oh no...yaaa!!" as the cue ball went two rails towards the side pocket for a scratch....but the cue ball avoided the side pocket by an inch and a relieved Pagulayan threw his hands up in celebration for sure this time as the new champion of the World Summit of Pool! The Plus System for Kicking

San Francisco Billiard Academy In my October and November 2005 articles, I discussed the “Corner-5” diamond system which allows you to calculate the line when kicking at an object ball along a side rail, end rail, side rail path. That system tells you where on the third cushion you will hit for any starting line to a side cushion. (Those articles are available on-line at the On The Break News web site. Click on “Columnists.”) Now let’s look at a system to use when you have to hit the end rail first. In the diagram is a typical problem. A good safe by your opponent has left you locked up. The Plus System may be the key. Bob Jewett The system is good for situations where you are shooting from a side rail and need to hit the end rail first, then the far side rail to return to your starting side rail. It tells you where on the third rail you will hit. You begin by noting how far down the rail from the cue ball’s position you want to hit. The cue ball’s position is given by where your stick crosses over the diamonds. In the example shot, I’ve made it at an even diamond. The system doesn’t bother to number diamonds along the first rail, so there is nothing to memorize there. The next thing to note is how much farther down the table you want the cue ball to land on the same cushion. In the diagram, I’ve arranged for it to be exactly three diamonds further down, since the side pocket counts as a diamond. So, you say to yourself “3.” Then you shoot the cue ball to the spot on the end cushion numbered 3 in the diagram. That’s all there is to it. If you can subtract small numbers, and memorize the numbers on the first rail, you can use this system. Well, it’s not quite that simple. Note that the 2 target is not quite where it should be — up in line with the other spots. That’s because most tables change angles a little when the ball gets closer to the corner. I haven’t marked the 4 target as it is right between the 3 and 5. A better name for this system would be the “3-5 System” since those are the numbers of the first two diamonds by the far corner.

The other problem with the system is that side spin has a large effect on the angles. I think you will find that running (left in this case) side spin combined with follow will get the most consistent results, but to make the numbers come out right, you may have to vary the spin as the angle of the cue ball into the first cushion changes. There is no one kind of spin that works for all shots here. That means that you need to practice the system before you use it in a game. If you’ve read this column before, you knew that demand was coming. Finally, on your equipment and with your stroke, the landing spot on the third rail may be consistently high or low. That’s fine — just add in a little correction to the calculations for your own conditions. You can find those corrections through practice.

I couldn’t figure out a way to send the photos that I took of the French table and it is so unique that I thought I would try again this month. After working on Dr Puziss is an Orthopedic Specialist who couldn’t stay retired and has developed several new treatments for worn out and tired joints on guys like me who have worn them out sanding cue tips and carrying slate. When I was doing my radio show Mike Shamos was nice enough to call and we talked Old Tables and I described the Doctors table and he thought it might be the oldest surviving table in the World. It is not only an unusual table but a real piece of art. I built a pool table once to match a set of rails that were very ornately inlaid and saved as a picture frame for a large oil painting from Austria. The art dealer kept looking at the frame and thought it looked like a set of billiard rails, sold the painting and brought the rails to me. Sure enough it made a 46 x 92 pool table. I built a Newport style frame and put the rams head carved leg on and it passed as an Austrian piece of furniture. Unfortunately for us the French found out they were losing their heritage and not as many works are being sent to us. Out of all the satisfied customers I have had the privilege of working for, I finally have two unhappy ones. Shuffle Board pool table and two Global tables. I finally got them done and they are on their way, and Brendan Crooks in Santa Rosa Calif. Brendan wanted a perfect Gold Crown II and I worked hard to make his one. The castings had scratches that I tried to buff out; however, much to my surprise they were not like the old Aluminum castings but pot metal with a thin chrome coat. Try as I might I could not get them right. They needed a new chrome treatment. A word to you out there who might try to buff out the later models of the GCII castings, Don’t. I tried every type of auto chrome paint and lacquer over coat and struggled to the last minute as I had my helpers cover and pack the rails. You know the old story “ if you want something done right, do it your self”. Well, I instructed Aaron to wrap the rails back to back and wrap them with Bubble pack. He put the bottom side to the face and of course the staples scratched the mica that I had spent hours shellac sticking and polishing. They did a poor job of covering one of the rails so I guess that on my way to southern California where I am heading in July I will stop off and redo. If any one wants me to stop we will be heading almost to San Diego and over to the Phoenix area. Give me a call @503 313 8646 we will try to see you. Potier Dominates Seattle Open another. Harry Platis could be heard barking at anyone willing to play for high stakes and ended up matching with Dan Louie playing one pocket. After a few hours Harry brings the balls up to the counter with a big smile and said he had the time. Uncle Jack’s Billiards & Lounge hosted the 2nd annual Seattle Open 9-Ball on June 9 10, 2007 and some of the best talent in the world like Rafael Martinez, Paul Potier, Dan Louie, Harry Platis, Hsin Huang, Alan Ima, Mike Zimmerman, and Japanese sensation in Kyoko Sone enjoyed a weekend of fantastic pool and a tournament that was ran with class by Tournament Director Randy Camantigue “I wanted to run a tournament that I as a player would enjoy playing” from the tournament format (races to 9 both side) to the atmosphere my staff and I work very hard to make sure everyone that was here enjoyed their time at Uncle Jack’s. Paul Potier was definitely enjoying his time with dominating performance against Dan Louie 94, Kyoko Sone 9-6, Harry Platis 94, Alan Ima 9-5, and had a thriller with Mike Zimmerman 9-8, for the point match. Zimmerman was also dominating his bracket by beating

Kristin Haney Captures AWBT Stop #5 June 9 - 10 The AWBT’s 5th stop was held up in the cool pines of Prescott Valley at one of our favorite rooms, On the Snap! This was a WPBA Qualifier, presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues. The Qualifier Spot was for the WPBA Florida Classic to be held Hollywood, Florida June 27th through July 1st. 25 ladies made the trip up on Saturday. The field consisted of women from all over the State of Arizona as well as several ladies from California, Nevada, Mexico and even Wisconsin! The top 8 ladies came back to play on Sunday, all bright eyed and bushy tailed. On the A side was Susan Mello vs. LeAndrea Gaff and Susan Williams vs. Holly Sholes. On the B side was Kristin Haney vs. Michelle Trevino and Hydred Makabali vs. Jeri Engh. Susan Mello and Holly Sholes both won their first matches of the day and met up for the hot seat match. As expected, it was a very tight match. Holly made it to the hill first with the score 6-5 then quickly won the next game which won her the match and the hot-seat. Mello went on to play Kristin Haney for 3rd place. At this point, since Holly had already won her spot into to the WPBA Florida Classic at the last AWBT WPBA Qualifier, and since Kristin did not pay to play for the qualifier spot, that meant Susan Mello had already won the Qualifier spot in this tournament! So any wins from that point on would just be for fun and bonus money! We knew this match would also be a tight match and we weren’t disappointed! After game 10 it was tied at 5. Kristin put together some great runs, won the last two games and won that match 7 - 5. After a really long day with many long matches, Holly finally had an opponent. Kristin and Holly hugged and began their match. Since this was a true double elimination format, Kristin would have to beat Holly in 2 sets of a race to seven. The match started off rough for both girls. The first set was Kristin all the way. She easily won the match 7-2. The ladies took a break and started the 2nd set. Kristin won the lag and snapped the 9 on the very first break! The very next game, Holly broke, the 9 almost went but hung in the pocket with an easy 1-9 combo, which she made! Just like that tied 1-1. Then, Kristin snapped the ball again to win game 5 and Holly turned right around and snapped the nine to win game 6! At that point the match was 4-2, with Kristin in the lead. Holly ran the rack in game 7 which made the score 4-3, then a 3 ball run out tied up the match 4-4. Then game 9, Kristin broke, almost made the 9ball again, but left it hanging, then made an awesome 1-9-cross-tablecarom to make the 9 which earned her the lead back 5-4. Holly came right back and made a great run and won the next game, which tied it back up 5-5. Game 11 was a game of great safes and great hits. Finally Holly got an edge and made a difficult cut shot and ran the rest of the 3 balls to win the game and put her on the hill. Kristin came right back and won the next game which made the game hill-hill! Kristin broke and scratched. The game went back and forth until they were down to the 7 ball. Holly plaid an awesome safety which made Kristin have to kick at the 7. Kristin kicked and hit the 7 ball but didn’t make it. Then Holly made the 7 and 8 but missed the 9. The crowd gasped. Kristin calmly walked up and made the 9 to win the game, the set and the Match! Congrats to Holly Sholes for 2nd place and $195 in prize money, Congrats to Kristin Haney for winning this tournament and the $295 in prize money in prize money! Congrats to Susan Mello for her WPBA Qualifier win to the Florida Classic during this tournament! All of Arizona will be routing for you and Holly in Florida! As a side note....Man these women can play! I know I’ve said it before, but these women make it look so easy! If you’ve never had a chance to come out watch one of the AWBT WPBA Qualifiers, as mostly a spectator, I can tell you, you really should come! Northwest Jr Qualifiers

The Northwest Junior Qualifier was a small tournament but was BIG on great pool shooting! 19UB (19 and under boys) Our local players were honored to see the performance level that Chuckie Holyoke brought to us! What a shining star Chuckie is. For those of you that have not yet seen or heard of this young man, keep your eyes and ears open because he IS the next big name in Billiards, and I’m not just talking Juniors! Chuckie is a quite player. But it is loud and clear that he has paid his dues and has put in his practice time. Most 15 year olds would be happy with just making a shot, not Chuckie. Each shot was made with thought and precision and nearly flawless throughout the tournament. Every once in a while I could see Chuckie Chuckie Holyoke shake his head for a missed leave (only by inches) but he would quickly regroup to finish the run. Chuckie easily walked through the field to take first place. But because he already earned a spot for Nationals the previous weekend, the qualifying spot went to second place finisher, Levi Meyer. Here’s how the event unfolded: Chuckie (Mt Vernon, WA) had wins against Zak Biggs (Spokane, WA) 9-3, Nat Biggs (Spokane, WA) 9-1, and Levi Meyer (Boise, ID) 9-3. Levi’s march to the finals included wins against Josh Moore (Boise, ID) 9-7, and Brian Phillips (Boise, ID) Levi Meyer 9-7. Levi went to the B side with a lose to Holyoke 9-3. On the B side Levi defeated Zak Biggs 9-3, to get back to a rematch with Chuckie. The final match between Holyoke and Meyer ended with a strong finish of 9-1 for Holyoke. Well Done! Chuckie Holyoke is sponsored by Dr. Cue Billiards. 14UB The finals for the 14 and under boys event put brother against brother. And what a match it was. Logan Parker, 13 and Alec Parker, 11 took the brother match to the limit. It started out with one game to younger brother Alec. Logan quickly tied it up at 1-1. Well, it went on like that only as brothers can do. At 7-7, after it being tied several times up to this point, Logan won to make it 8-7 in a race to 9. The next game went back and forth just as the match had gone. Just when we all thought it was over, Logan missed the nine and scratched. Alec had a ball-in-hand on the

nine to tie it up one last time. The lack of experience and nerves of a long, long match proved to be too much for Alec and he missed the nine. After each Parker brother shot at the nine a couple more times, Logan was able to play a nice rail shot to end this intense match once and for all. The final score was 9-7 older brother over younger brother. Tracie Parker, Loagan and Alec’s mom deserves a medal, or a trip to a day spa, for being able to sit through such an intense match! Although, Logan won the match, they are Alec Parker both winners in my book. The Parker’s are true gentlemen and treated each other with the greatest amount of respect. Girls There were only two girls present for the qualifier, Anna Thorne 15 (Boise, ID) and Logan Parker Mercedes Pendleton 9 (Boise,ID). They played a set between them to get in some tournament practice. Even though Mercedes is only 9, she shot real well. She managed a win against Anna 5-4. Mercedes is excited to be going to Nationals again. She attended Nationals in Tuscan, AZ last year where she was the youngest player of the entire Juniors event. Thanks to those of you that came from out of town to participate in the qualifier. I hope to see you all again next year. Thank you to all the parents for coming and supporting these young players. City Lights proudly hosted the first stop of the Rainier 9-Ball Tour, June 16th and 17th, the field was full of champions, including Rafael Martinez, Dan Louie, Todd Marsh, Hsin Huang, Kyoto Sone and many more, 30 players in all showed up to compete for a $1700 total purse. The races were set to 7/7, BCA, cue ball foul only rules. Early on this tournament belonged to Rafael Martinez, taking out Canada’s own Alan Ima in truly stunning form (7-0), in just under 9 minutes. Mike Zimmerman knocked off women’s champion Hsin Huang (7-1), Jeff “Hill-Hill” Jimenez showed us why he earns that nickname, knocking off the tour’s director, Junior Tolentino (76), then Junior Sardoncillo (7-6), but truly all eyes were on the top of the bracket as Rafael continued to dominate and destroy every challenger he faced, his race to the point, brought every great challenger to their threshold, he

what a strong player he really is, coming back from the bottom of the bracket, to win seven straight matches to wait in the third spot while Martinez, sent Todd Marsh packing to the 3rd place match with Alan who had wins over Gary Garvin (71), Michael Jensen of Beaverton, OR (73), Pat Vice, (7-6), Tim Paget (7-2), Mike Shannon (7-3), Arlo Walsman (7-3), and Raul Abenojar, (7-4). The “Plan B” Exercise Samm Diep (c) May 2007 After having taken a personal hiatus from my pool training these past few months, I’m back to basics this week. I’ve just been shooting a ton of stop shots and just making lots of balls. The Monk calls it “piling rocks.” That’s when you throw all fifteen balls on the table and run them and run them and run them. I love to pile rocks. It’s really quite demanding of your attention and focus actually. It’s so easy to get lazy and lackadaisical if you don’t have a plan. Other variations of piling rocks include shooting every ball with your opposite hand, using the bridge on every shot, drawing every ball, following every ball, Samm Diep shooting every shot as firm as you can, shooting every shot as easy as you can, or trying not to bump into another ball. These are all just some variations to spice up your practice a little. On this particular hot summer night at Table Steaks East, I was piling rocks, shooting each shot with a firm punch stroke. Then I decided to select only the more difficult shots, versus just shooting the connect-thedots layout in front of me. In doing so, I began noticing a pattern. I caught myself second guessing my decisions. I noticed that I wasn’t fully committed a couple times to shooting this not so obvious shot. That’s when it came to me. I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it, but I’m calling it The Plan B Exercise. Obviously, Plan B is what we resort to when our Plan A fails. In this exercise, throw all fifteen balls on the table to run in no particular order. Start with a not so obvious, more difficult shot and play shape for a specific ball and pocket on the table. Once you get there, turn around and now shoot a completely different, much more difficult shot. Repeat. The objective is to become accustomed to committing to and pocketing any shot, not just the one you planned for. You’d be amazed at how this forces you to just suck it up and shoot. Have you ever gotten out of line and now you’re faced with a more difficult shot than intended, or maybe even have to choose a different shot altogether? It’s so common to then miss because we were so consumed with the disappointment that we were distracted from our task at hand, which is making the shot. My Plan B Exercise is just a simple little way of practicing overcoming the change of plan and resetting yourself for the new plan and shot you’re facing. I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it. APA FEATURED BY SPORTS ILLUSTRATED LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (June 18, 2007) - Sports Illustrated has highlighted the positive impact the American Poolplayers Association (APA) has made on the sport of pool in a recent article by Jon Wertheim. Wertheim addresses pool’s “seedy reputation,” but also notes the success of the sport at the recreational level - due in large part to the APA. Here’s a small excerpt from that article: “Much of the credit for this growth is owed to the American Poolplayers Association (APA), a Missouri-based outfit that claims a quarter of a million players as members and sanctions weekly amateur leagues in 9,000 different sites. If the group’s official mission is to organize and standardize recreational pool — serving as a governing body for amateur pool — the unofficial mission is to serve as a public relations vehicle for the sport. For one, there’s a strict prohibition in gambling. (“That’s not the view we want others to have of us,” says APA President Renee Poehlman.) Women are welcome and comprise nearly one-third of APA membership. And thanks to an in-house handicapping system, The Equalizer, ball-bangers (beginners) can play alongside the most skilled practitioners. “We don’t want to be considered the pool of yesteryear,” says Poehlman.”

Yes it’s that time of year again. Time to turn our attentions to the 2007/ 2008 league season. After just having returned from Las Vegas and shortly before that the PACS regionals at Little Creek, I can honestly say I’m excited to begin the new ACS year. The organization as truly developed itself into the premier association and has been named as the governing body for all cuesports (pool, carom and snooker) into the US Olympic Committee. This was evident this year in Vegas as they had the American/Canadian Snooker Challenge going on in one of the side areas. They held clinics for the pool players at no cost. Boy, if you think a pool table is big, try playing on a snooker table!!! It gives you a whole new appreciation for that game. Also, during the tournament, they had the ESPN Televised World Summit of Pool as well as “challenge the pros”, where during the Beer and Chips mixer the Billiard Education Foundation sponsored an event to “challenge” the pros. One of the ladies beat Corey Duell and the crowd went wild. The actual event itself couldn’t have been better. The competition was great and as usual, High Country Promotion did a fantastic job of running the tournament. Many of our local Northwest players did great, in fact taking top honors but I won’t go into that here. I’m sure the results will be published elsewhere in this paper. One change this year was a new scotch format where you played both races in 8 and 9 ball. It was a new twist and quite fun! In addition to the main events, second chance tournament where offered with no entry free and added money in all 8-ball events. Mini tournaments were also running non stop. If you’ve never been to an ACS national tournament, I’d encourage you to mark your calendar for next year. Well, enough about the nationals. I’d like to turn your attention to the local action and the Pacific ACS. We have secured the Little Creek Resort and Casino in Shelton, Washington again this year for the tournament. Of all the people I talked to after this year’s event I honestly can’t say I heard a single negative thing. The facility was excellent and they really appreciated all the pool players. The tournament was run flawlessly, again with the assistance of Gary Benson of High Country Promotions (a recurring theme here?). I’m really excited to be part of this organization as we enter our 4th year. Speaking of the upcoming year, leagues are beginning to form. We’ve got leagues underway from Eugene up to the North Seattle area. We expect the northern area to

All girl team Balls Out (Dawg House, Hacienda Heights) shows the league exactly what “girl power” is all about as they battled through a brutal field of tough teams all week long to ultimately take the whole tournament down. Did we mention that is is an all girl team playing in the open division Regionals. The road to the All girl team Balls Out championship was Captain Celine Barrett, Sarah Cho, Brook Thomason, Melinda Huang, Shannon Woods, Suzanne Isaacs hard fought and dramatic beginning with their struggle to make playoffs in the closing weeks of the Spring Session. Trailing division leaders Lounge Lizards by 3 and in a dead tie for 3rd, Balls out brought out their best game to clinch 2nd with a 4-1 win. With a little help from the Lizards at The Lounge, the girls were now 1 win away from division finals and a Regional qualifier spot. On Tuesday, May 22nd, they laid down their road to the LTC with a 3-1 win over Plan B from the Golden Cue in the division semi-finals. The team’s blitzkrieg continued with a 3-2 win in the division finals over the 1st place lounge team bringing this all girl crew to the opening rounds of the 2007 Local Team Championships. After a first round bye, Balls out pulls out a hill-hill, 3-2 win over the Dragon Ballerz (The Well). The girls follow that up on Wednesday with

Sarah Cho extends the lead next with a 2-1 win over Victor Martinez. In the 3rd match, Sam Musa from the Jokers cuts into the lead by beating Melinda Huang 5-1. The drama continues in the 4th match as Jokers’ captain Alex Posada evens up the team match at 2-2 with a 5-1 win over Brook Thomason. It was yet another nail biter. Up until this point, every LTC match Balls Out has been in has gone hill-hill and team captain Celine Barrett has gotten the cue in the fifth match every time. Success may have something to do with that decision, as Barrett takes total control of the hill match and dispatches Bash Syed 3-0. The girls are going to Vegas for the National Team Championships. Spike’s Justice League In the title match-up Paul Herrera, Gary Hijar, Fernando Guevara, featuring Pin Pum Pan Edward Martinez, Rogelio Cabral, Gabriel Hernandez, coming fresh off of a Richard Sales, Carina Villarreal win against the heavily favored Air Barrels team from the Golden Cue, the girls were not to be denied. Shannon Woods gets the team going with a 3-2 win over Aik Lim. Pin Pum Pan evens the match in the 2nd as Shawn Zhen defeats Suzanne Isaacs 3-0. In the 3rd, Brook Thomason gets the girls the lead back with a 4-2 win over Raymond Zhao. With the finish line in sight, Balls Out brings in their closer Melinda Huang in the 4th to slam the door with a 5-3 win over Pin Pum Pan captain Yong Fang. Congratulations Captain Celine Barrett, Sarah Cho, Brook Thomason, Melinda Huang, Shannon Woods, and Suzanne Isaacs. You have done something really unbelievably special here and have defied all odds to win this thing. The girls will be representing the San Gabriel Valley APA (August 20-25, 2007) at the National Team Championships. They will be joined by runner up team Pin Pum Pan. Please give them all some props and wish them luck in August as they head to Vegas to face the best open 8 ball teams in the country.

On June 7th, the crew from Spike’s Justice League began their bid for the National 9 Ball Team Championships by powering through a tough Hunters team from El Fino’s 44-36. After a 2 day break, they returned to face the fall division champs Different Strokes. The gang from Spikes made short work of this semi-final match with a 51-29 win moving them 1 step away from the big show in Vegas. In the finals, Justice League seemingly hit their first road block as they struggled at the start against a hungry Cloud 9 team from Kelly’s Pub. In the 1st, Michael Quizon of Cloud 9 edge’s out Edward Martinez 12-8. The follow up 2 punch was supplied by Ray Reid as he pounces on Gary Hijar 16-4. Down 28-12, the spike’s team creates a little breathing room compliments of Richard Sales as he pulls the Spike’s team within 4 points in the 3rd with a win over Rosalie Sabino. The 4th match was a clash of the Titans as Fernando Guevara (SL6) faced off against Joseph Martinez (SL9). Needing some valuable points, Fernando lowered the boom on Cloud 9’s ace to a tune of a 16-4 win. Needing only 5 team points to secure a National birth, Gabriel Hernandez closes the deal with a blistering break draining 4 balls against Vivian Schootz. “Chip” Pool Classic

Final standings for the “Chip” Classic Pool Tournament held at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was held Saturday June 9, 2007 with a great turn out of 30 players. A special Thank You goes out to all the players that showed up, and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a “Chip” Pool Tournament is I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. You are paid immediately for every game you win, instant gratification. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the player with any chips left. Every player won at least one game. Everybody made money. During the week of June 7-16, battles on all sorts of green felt abounded at the Riviera in Las Vegas at the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) Nationals. 9-Ball, 8-Ball, snooker, wheelchair, artistic, speed pool, carrom, amateur, professional - the Nationals showcased it all. And no player had a better run through the various divisions than did Jessica Frideres of Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Jessica hauled in the hardware in no fewer than six (!) divisions of play - Women's 9Ball Singles [2nd], Women's Masters 8-Ball Singles [1st], Master Scotch Doubles [1st], Women's Open 9-Ball Team [2nd], Women's Master 8-Ball Team [2nd] and Women's Speed Pool [1st]. Bar whiz Jesse Bowman (E. Moline, IL) rebounded from lackluster 2006 singles results to claim the Men's 9Ball Singles title, but again placed out of the money in the Men's Masters 8Ball Singles - won by newcomer Shannon Ducharme of Winnipeg, Canada. Katrina Dennis (Ridgefield, WA) scored the Women's 9-Ball Singles crown, and claimed a strong 3rd place in the Women's Open 8-Ball Singles as well. Injuring her leg in transit to Las Vegas, Jean Bartholomew (Portland, OR) continued to add on to her impressive resume in the Senior Women's 8-Ball Singles by claiming yet another national title. Blake Byrket (Muscatine, IA) took down the Men's Standard 8-Ball Singles title, while his seventeen year old daughter, Rachel, took 4th in the Women's Open 8-Ball Singles and 1st on the winning Leisure Time Bratz team in the Women's Master 8-Ball Teams. The FCB Willis team from Omaha, Nebraska claimed both the Men's Open 9-Ball and Men's Open 8Ball team titles, while Canadian teams

continued their dominance in the Men's Standard 8-Ball Team division Mad Dogs of Calgary, Alberta, being the latest hoisters of the crown. In other events, Brad Rautio (New Westminster, BC) surprised the field in the NWPA-sanctioned "Las Vegas Open" wheelchair event to take the crown, while 13-year old Austin Murphy (who placed 9th in the pro 9ball event) outlasted all challengers for the ACS National Artistic Pool Championship, sponsored by Tom "Dr. Cue" Rossman. In the 2nd Annual "Can-Am Snooker Challenge," Team USA avenged its 2006 defeat by Team Canada on the beautiful 12-foot green baize to claim the challenge trophy by a 12-8 margin over Team Canada. Canada regained some sense of satisfaction when its 2-man team of Alain Robidoux and Don Chomiski took down the $500 winner-take-all "UPA vs. Canada" snooker challenge over pro 9-ball and former pro snooker players Tony Crosby (UK) and Lee Chenman (Hong Kong). Former World 9-Ball Champion, Alex Pagulayan (Canada), outlasted Shane Van Boening (Rapid City, SD) 7-5 in the ESPN-televised $25,000 added "World Summit of Pool" for the pro 9ball championship. Kudos to Dragon Promotions on promoting a very successful event. The 2008 ACS Nationals will again return to the Riviera, June 7-14, and will include a few changes: 1). no Master team divisions; 2). 4-person women's teams; 3). Scotch doubles play in 8-ball only; and 4). 9-ball team divisions and 8-ball team divisions scheduled on the same dates (different times), so that teams can play to their heart's content in two separate team divisions! The ACS inspires as much play as possible at the Nationals in many divisions, so that a player has the time of his/her life; that is, if they are not allergic to green baize!ACS. Two from thirty 9-Ball teams qualified June 1 thru June 3, through their top performance at the Local Team Championship (LTC), to compete at the 2007 APA 9Ball National T e a m Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. Tacoma’s City Lights Spirits & Pool in Tacoma, WA was the host to this event. These teams will be vying for a national title and first place prize Vi Suga Arse money of $15,000. The tournament takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino August 17-20. A team has two ways to earn eligibility into the annual LTC tournament. 1. End a regular session as ‘high point finisher’ within their division. 2. Win a division play-off therefore becoming a ‘division champion’. Since the LTC format is modified single elimination, all teams are guaranteed to play twice. With this tournament format, when teams get to the third round, it turns into single elimination. Vi Suga Arse (contrary to their sarcastic team name) has been a competitive team for many years. The team just qualified at the end of the spring session for LTC’s by finishing third highest in points in their division, placing them in the session play-offs. The team continued through play-offs defeating HHH Crew in the semifinals and The Thizzzle in the finals match to earn them the ‘division champion’ title and a seat into the 2007 LTC’s. This is the first year the team will be competing at the NTC. Since the majority of the team works at the Right Spot in Fife, they always have to do The Other Team people shuffling to have enough players to play in the LTC tournament and still have employees to work! :) Having little sleep from closing the bar on Friday night, the team played their first round at 8 am on Saturday morning. After winning that match, they were scheduled to play their next match at

11. The team was defeated by the 9 Ball Runners, Steve Franco (capt.) from the Log Cabin Pub & Eatery in Sumner; therefore putting Angie’s team on the B side of the tournament board. Vi Suga Arse continued to defeat their opponents for the next 3 match’s earning them a seat in the finals match. The finals match was to be against The Other Team, Gary Lamb (capt.) from Denny’s in Lakewood, WA, a team where the majority of the players won the LTC for 8 Ball in 2005. Also, one of their team mates, Kenneth Hendrickson, just got back from the APA National Singles Championship in Las Vegas. The match went down to the 5th game where Len Ekenman (owner of the Right Spot) had to play Steve Clardy (both skill level 6). The score for the two teams entering in the 5th match was 46 to 34, in favor of The Right Spot team. This meant Len All Racked Up had to only get to 23 points before his opponent needed to reach the skill level points of 46. After an exciting match between both players, Len led the team to victory with a final game score of 23 to 37. If the Right Spot has a ‘gone fishing’ sign on its front door from August 17 to the 20th ... you’ll know why! The captain of All Racked Up, Secret Wong, is no stranger to the 9 Ball NTC; she competed with a team in 2005. Her current team qualified this year for LTC’s during the summer session by winning division play-offs. In the fall session, the team Bastanados made it to the finals match and this spring session made it to the semifinals. The majority of the team is used to playing together since 4 of the 7 members also played as a team in the 8-ball format. All Racked Up was defeated in their first match against the Too Fun Crew team; therefore, putting the team on the B-side of the board. The team won their next 3 match’s earning them a seat in the final match. Their opponents, Bastanados, Christal Haesel (Capt.) from the Unicorn Sports Bar & Grill in Ruston, WA has had a phenomenal league year. The Bastanados finished high point’s finisher 2 of the 3 session, won the finals match for the summer and fall sessions and finished in 2nd place for the final’s match of the spring session. Christal’s team also won their first four matches’ of the LTC tournament to seat them in the final’s match. That made for some tough competition for the All Racked up team! Let’s not forget to mention Jeremy had a 9 on the Snap to start the match! What a comeback for Vi Suga Arse and All Racked Up, that went to the B-side of the tournament, then stayed tough to win their respected boards. During the National Team Championships, the APA also hosts MiniMania events, including preregistered Open 8-Ball Doubles, Open 9-Ball Doubles and Open 8Ball 3-Person Championships, as well as a variety of mini tournaments. MiniMania events pay out more than $200,000 annually. Danny K Plays Straight Los Angeles World 14.1 Championship Qualifier: Kuykendall & Nakano Win Los Angeles, California- Danny K’s in California hosted the 2007 Los Angeles World 14.1 Championship Qualifier. This event would be the only World 14.1 Qualifier to be held on the West Coast, and only one of six qualifiers total. Last year no qualifiers were held on the West Coast, but owner Danny Kuykendall had a deep desire to promote the growth of straight pool in his home

turf and has also been a co-sponsor supporter of pro events such as Dragon Promotions US Pro Tour Championship and is a card carrying member of the UPA. The World 14.1 Championships main event will be held on July 9-14,2007 at the Hilton in East Brunswick NJ. Broomfield, Colo. - June 23, 2007 - The 24th edition of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) International Home & Recreation Expo came to a close today. The event, produced by the BCA, was held at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, June 21 -23, 2007. “Our theme, ‘It’s a whole new game,’ was witnessed over the past few days with our commitment to provide added value to all attendees of the Expo and with the overall success of the show,” commented Ivan Lee, chair of the Expo and newly elected president of the BCA Board of Directors. “The feature presentation by Clyde Fessler, former vice president of business development for Harley-Davidson, the consumer research review and the CEO roundtable discussion provided informative dialogue that our membership has been seeking, while the Commodores concert and golf tournament provided added networking opportunities in a new, fun environment. All the special events exceeded our expectations with respect to attendance.” Attendance for the three-day event rose 17 percent over last year’s show, with a total of 2,156 buyers, as compared to 1,843 this past year in Houston. “The attitude on the show floor was upbeat and positive, with many exhibitors commenting to me personally about how successful the show was for them,” said Lee. The number of companies exhibiting at the event equaled last year’s number at 234. Total number of booths was 1,003 as compared to 1,272 last year in Houston. “We are pleased with the overall success of the Expo,” said Lee. “The attendance and exhibitor participation levels were where we projected and the feedback we’ve received so far is very positive for the event. If you’ve wanted to play ACS but haven’t been able to find a league, that is quickly changing. To qualify to play in all ACS events you must play 8 weeks in a sanctioned league between June 1st and May 31st of the upcoming year. You can play in as many leagues and league sessions as you’d like. Your membership dues ($20.00) cover you for the entire year. The PACS is more than happy to sanction any league, or dual sanction leagues with whichever organization you are currently playing under. I know this has been an issue for some of you in the past and frankly, I don’t understand why some of the other leagues are dead set against this. We are happy to work with you to make this happen. We want all pool players to be able to play as much pool as they can and participate in as many events as their schedules allow One of the things that we as an organization feel we could do a better job at is communicating with you, our members and future members. Unfortunately, or fortunately as the case may be, your Pacific ACS board is made up of pool players, not journalists. This year I will personally commit to you to communicate on a regular basis and keep you informed of how you can participate in our leagues and events. I will be asking all our league operators to keep me abreast of their leagues so I can share this information with you. It breaks my heart to think there are some of you out there that want to be a part of the organization but have been unable to do so in the past because of a lack of knowing how to get involved. So, stay tuned each month for more information and contact information for leagues in your area and be part of the association run by pool players for pool players. Summer Jamboree Hard Times Billiards, Sacramento CA By Tom Suarez, tournament director

The Big story for the Jamboree 9 Ball and One Pocket events was the addition of the World famous players attending. Francisco Bustamante, Rafael Martinez, Marlon Manalo, Bobby Hunter, John Schmidt, Ike Runnels, Chris MacDonald and Tony Chohan all traveled from their home towns/countries to play in the Jamboree. Francisco Bustamante didn't just walk away with all the prizes, but it sure looked that way. The 9 Ball event had 72 players with races to 9 on the winners side and 7 on the one loss side. Bustamante drew a 1st round bye and played John Schmid (who also drew a first round bye) and won a close match 9-7. John then took the long way to the finals winning 10 matches on the left side to gain the rematch with Busty in the single race to 11 in the finals. It was not an easy win for Francisco, John was on a mission and was leading 8-7 in this race but came up dry on the break in the 16th rack, and Busty caught a gear and won the next 4 to send John home with 2nd place money. 1st $3000 Francisco Bustamante 2nd $2200 John Schmidt 3rd $1500 Tyler Edey 4th $1000 Marlon Manalo 5/6 $500 Geraldo Jimto and Edwin Montal 7/8 $350 Louis Ulrich and Jose Parica 9-12 $250 Bobby Hunter, Austin Murphy, Tony Chohan, Jeff Gregory The One Pocket event had 53 players in the double elimination event. A race to 3 on both the winners and one loss side made for interesting matchups by all entrants. Once again the random draw matched two great players up in the first round. Rafael Martinez and Francisco Bustamante played great against each other and it was unfortunate that this match up was so early.

Francisco won 3-1. This turned out to be just the first match of Francisco's undefeated run to the finals. In the Hot Seat match, Tony Chohan took the early lead and then was on the hill when Bustamante found what he needed to make the run for the finals. Busty won the next two games and sent Tony to the left side. This match took all of 35 minutes. The first 4 games were over in 20 minutes. Tony met Colorado's David Gross in the finals of the left side. David put up a struggle but Chohan was on a mission and wanted to get back to the finals in the longer race to 5 against Busty. Tony won 3-0 against Mr. Gross to gain his chance again. The finals started out all Tony winning the first game. Busty came back to squeak out the second game but Tony bounced back and won the next 2 to make the score 31. But, then Busty slowed down and started taking the better percentage shots and playing more safeties than in the first few games. This new strategy turned the table around and Busty won the next 3 games to make the score 4-3. With Tony breaking on the next game and Busty missing a cross bank, Tony got the easy win to tie the score 4-4 and set the stage for the single game final. Busty broke, Tony turned the table layout around and had most of the balls now in front of his pocket. Francisco took a lot more time in this game than the previous games and it paid off. Bustamante kept playing safe and taking ball out of the front of Tony's pocket and sending them up table and keeping Tony scrambling. The Hard Times Summer Jamboree kicked off the summer event with the addition of two events. The USPPA tournament, usually held in Reno during the summer, accepted the offer to add their two events to the Summer Jamboree. Both the events are open to all qualified USPPA members and did they show up for this Jamboree. This year the Jamboree started with a June 14th USPPA mini event. The USPPA membership showed up with 98 players to take part in this single elimination event. Sacramento's own Gene Ahola took first place honors and the $750 cash prize. The USPPA Main event started Friday June 15th and produced a whopping 102 entries that surpassed anyone's expectations for this tournament. Two and a half days later the double elimination tournament ended with two Sacramento CA players in the finals.
