How Much Difference Does The Tip Really Make?

One of the first things anyone learns about pool is that the tip is the most important part of the pool cue. Without a tip, there would be no way to “grip” the ball and impart the spin (English) necessary for the successful execution of many shots − the striking end of the cue would skip right off the ball. Cue tips are usually made of some kind of leather, whether that leather be cow hide, deer hide, water buffalo hide, or pig hide. These different hides, combined with different tanning Roger Long methods, provide various grains and firmnesses to compliment various styles of play. There are commonly three different classifications used to describe the hardness of a cue tip: soft; medium; and hard. The advantage to soft tips is that they grip the cue ball well, but their disadvantage is that they lose their shape quicker. The reverse is true of harder tips; they hold their shape well, but grip less when applying English. Until recent times, tips were made from a single layer of leather. But about twenty-five years ago, a company out of Japan introduced a new brand called “Moori,” and it was a tip made of multiple layers of laminated pig skin. The main advantage derived from this new design was that tips were now more consistent in their quality and firmness, whereas with the single-layered tips there had been major fluctuations in the hardness from one tip to the next in any given box. Further, these new layered tips mushroomed far less and held a crown far better. Their only drawback has been the fact that they cost almost five times as much as common single-layered tips. Regardless of the premium price, Moori tips have been proven performers,
and have spurred many new competitive brands of layered tips, as well as forcing the manufacturers of single-layered tips to upgrade the quality and consistency in their products. As a pool player, myself, I have tried several different brands of layered tips and have been appreciative of their long-lasting qualities, but have not experienced enough of a difference – particularly in light of improvements made to single-layered tips – to justify their high cost. That recently changed, however, after I asked professional player, Rodney Morris, what brand of tip he uses. His answer was, “Kamui.” When I asked him why, he answered that he was given one as a free sample a few years ago and he quickly found it to be the best tip he’d ever used. Rodney claimed that Kamui tips not only hold their shape extremely well, they hold chalk extremely well, also. Now, Kamui tips are made of laminated layers of pig skin, and they are some of the most expensive on the market. But based on Rodney Morris’s recommendation, I thought I would give them a try, and now I’m glad I did. The tip does everything Rodney said it would, plus it has improved my game. I can now draw the ball better than ever before! And I feel it is my obligation as an instructor to pass valuable information, such as this, on to others.

This was the 23rd time California Billiard Club has held a “Reno style” USPPA tournament. For years it was held as a “Reno Warmup” but now, even with no Summer event at the Sands in Reno, the tradition continues, and this time we drew 89 players. Among them were 15 players with averages of 100 or better and six new members playing their first USPPA event. It was a two-day event that brought back the 24 money winners on Sunday. All matches were race to eight using 100% handicap, on a double elimination board. It was my pleasure to run the tournament, and

even though it was not error-free on my part, the glitches were more amusing than troublesome. Spectators were treated to an interesting side show as the championship match began -- a One-Pocket match with Santos Sambajon and Tony Chohan. Pictures! Bob Zack once again came out on top, beating David Randell for 1st place in the monthly 14.1 Tournament at Sam's Billiards on June 7. Bob had a high run of 52 against Sam Rabito in the finals. Sam tied with Buzz Poleson for the 3rd and 4th place slots. Buzz beat Paul Marquez in their first match of the day by 50 to 1, but in Paul's second match he ran 43 balls and beat Jim Gillespey by a score of 50 to 2. The summary of the final results for the 18-player tournament are as follows:

The little town of Rogue River is all a buzz. Their 9-ball team, “The Rogues”, formally The “Hitmen” out of The Cattlemen’s Saloon has taken the Southern Oregon 9-ball Crown and will represent their league in August at the APA National Team Championships. This six person team of four men and two women has only been together a short time, but they made it work. Skill levels vary from a just starting SL2 to a well seasoned SL9. At The Nationals the top 9-ball awards will be individual trophies and a check for $15,000. The Beijing House in Medford is also taking pride in their team earning the same status in the 8-ball competition. Top awards at The Nationals in 8-ball will be individual trophies and $25,000. “The Three Evils” have been together for some time and finally made the slot in the Nationals. They are an eight person team with five men and three women. The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas will host these two teams and the others facing round the clock competition on 300 pool tables, with teams from all over the United States, Canada and Japan. Members will meet thousands of amateur pool players all dreaming of that top prize, but much more important they will share an incredible experience, one to cherish for the rest of their lives. The 9-ball Runner Up was “Wat Da Hell” out of The Old Barn in Grants Pass and sharing third were “Straight Shooters” from The Break Room and “The Misfits” representing The Old Barn in Grants Pass. The 8-ball Runner Up was “Barn Burners” from The Old Barn” in Grants Pass and sharing third were “Three Evils II” and The Stickmen, both shooting out of The Break Room.

Saturday June 6th and Sunday June 7th were the dates for this months Jamboree at Hard Times in Sacramento. The One Pocket event had 39 players from all over the Northern California area. Missing in action was Billy Palmer the long time favorite to win any One Pocket tournament in the Pacific Time Zone. It was reported that Billy was performing family responsibilities and we are all proud of him for thinking of Family first. Billy’ absence opened the door for George Michaels, favorite Rafael Martinez and a lot of other well deserving players that would have to battle past Billy to have a chance at the 1st place prize. This was the first month that Hard Times added a $500 guaranteed prize to the entry fee totals. The 9 Ball event had a great turnout with 56 players for a total of $1400 in entry fees plus the first month of a guaranteed $1000 from Hard Times. The $2400 prize fund got a lot of the players super charged to get their share. Only 16 players got their hands on the money. Local player Jun Almoite took 1st with Rafael Martinez coming in 2nd. Hot Shots Host NCS Qualifier
First of all, I would like to thank everyone that participated in the tournament yesterday, Saturday, June 27, 2009. For a qualifying event, we had a pretty good showing. Seventeen players made their way to Hot Shots Billiards in Cypress,CA for chance at a spot in the NCS 10-ball event. Although, the tournament lasted a little longer than anticipated due to the longer races (race to 7- both sides) on each side of the bracket and being a true double elimination tournament, we certainly had some exciting matches. Here are the details: $250. - Added Money 1st Jose “Amang” Parica Qualify 2nd Brian Parks $160 3rd Santos Sambajon $100 4th Arthur Garcia $60 Highlights - Jose Parica had a challenging day in the tournament, starting the day with a hill/hill victory right out of the gate. Only to face, in his next match, a local legend (Francisco Galindo) in a hill/hill affair as well. This day was filled with hill/ hill matches. Combining the longer races (7- winner’s side/ 7 one-loss side) with the 13 game matches, we were in for a long day. With the attention given to Jose Parica and Santos Sambajon, Brian Parks and Art Garcia won each one of their matches with a quiet confidence and determination. Art Garcia took on Santos Sambajon taking the match hill/hill, but Santos would come out the winner. Eventually, Brian Parks faced the ever-so-dangerous Santos Sambajon and was thrown to the one-loss side but Brian wasn’t finished just yet. We had a classic match-up for the hot seat match - Jose Parica vs. Santos Sambajon. Mr. Parica showed in this match why, even at 60 yrs old, he is still a force to be reckoned with. He was able to come out victorious in this match with relative ease (score: 7-4). Brian Parks and Santos Sambajon would end up having a rematch to decide who would face Jose Parica in the finals. Brian Parks caught a gear and didn’t look back taking advantage of the second opportunity, taking down Santos

Sambajon. Being a true double elimination tournament, Brian would have to defeat Jose Parica twice in the final. Coming off a rewarding victory over Santos, Brian took the first set (race to 7) with ease 7-1. The tournament would come down to one set, a race to seven, and what a match it was. Both players, visibly tired from a long tournament day, would battle back and forth. Both were making key mistakes but both would capitalize on each other’s mistakes at key point in the match. Of course, keeping up with the theme of the day, the tournament would end up coming down to the last game (hill/hill). Brian broke the rack but didn’t pocket a ball and that would be the key misfortune of his tournament day. Mr. Jose Parica, after midnight, showed why he should be in the “Hall of Fame” by running out the last remaining rack as drained as he was and earned himself a spot in the NCS 10-ball event in September in Las Vegas, NV. Next month (July) we will resume with our regularly scheduled $250. added Last Saturday of the Month 10-ball Tournament. Saying goodbye to “Critter”
My first encounter with Jerry Crider was a memorable one. It was 1974, at Helena’s old Red Carpet Billiards. I was 22 years old, fresh out of the Navy, and thinking I was getting to be a pretty good pool player. I had just finished shooting some with Pat Foley, when he said he had somebody he wanted me to meet. Foley knew that I had the same goals as a few other guys hanging out in the pool hall in those days, that being to turn pro. Or at least finding out how good we could get before giving it up to go to work. Foley was also familiar with the old adage that if you want to get better, you have to play somebody that’s better than you for money. Which is why he introduced me to Crider. Crider was a skinny fella, a few years older than myself I figured. He had fairly long, stringy hair that hung out from underneath his stocking cap. He wore a mustache and was missing his two front teeth. I learned two things right away; that almost everyone referred to him as “Critter,” and the guy could shoot some stick. We played a session, and I don’t recall whether it was straight pool (14.1) or 9-ball, but I do know that I lost. I also remember – and will never forget – that after I paid him and was unscrewing my stick, he looked me straight in the eye and said, “The reason you lost is because I’m better than you are. You can’t beat me, and you’ll never be able to, because I’ll always be better than you.” I recall thinking to myself, ‘Oh yeah? Well, we’ll see about that.’ With renewed purpose, I worked twice as hard on my game, becoming obsessed with beating Jerry Crider. He and I proceeded to spend countless hours on the tables together, and it took a while, but I finally did get better than he was. Two of my more unforgettable sessions with him (mainly because I won) took place a few years later when he was working for the pool hall. After closing down at 2 a.m., we locked ourselves inside and played 9-ball all night, and then went out for breakfast the next mornings. What was interesting about my learning process, was that the whole time we were playing and I was losing, he became my teacher. Prior to that, I was basically self-taught, by studying other players, and trial and error in practice. Critter took me under his wing, as a mentor to the many different aspects of the game. Not only was he unafraid to share his knowledge, he was actually anxious to pass along whatever he knew. I’d be losing to him in a money game, he’d shoot a shot I didn’t understand, and between racks he would show me how to do it. I later learned a lot from quite a few other guys, but he was the first to take a personal “hands on” approach. This was well before instructional videos, and the first book I ever read on the game, Willie Mosconi’s “Winning Pocket Billiards,” was borrowed from Critter. A pool hall consists of quite few colorful characters, and Critter was among the most unique. I can still picture him in my mind’s eye, gliding gracefully around the table as if on skates, sort of leaned back with his head tilted slightly to one side, a cigarette clamped in his teeth. He had a distinctive bridge – the hands of a mechanic showing the telltale grease under his fingernails. He was confident, cocky at times, and like most good players, didn’t mind showing off once in awhile. A good shot was usually followed by a big toothless grin and a high-pitched “Wooh!” I’m convinced that his strengths on the table were his follow shot and his bank shots. He had such a powerful stroke shooting high English, the cue ball literally exploded in pursuit of the object ball when he shot follow. In bank pool, we’d rack nine balls, with the first to make five banks winning. I always had trouble beating him at this game. As we became better friends, we found out we had more in common than just pool – particularly our proclivity to party. We were both Navy men as well, and he and I also had forebearers who

owned businesses at the corner of Lincoln Road and Montana Ave., where Bob’s Valley Market is currently located. After we each sobered up (although he eventually went back on the sauce), our families partook in several activities together, mostly playing cards and water skiing. Joe Jacques hung Jerry with the nickname “Fang,” and Chuck Wiseman altered it to “Fanger,” which was my favorite monicker for him. Whether it was cheering one of his patented bank shots, or greeting him on the phone, I’d always do my best impression of a howling wolf – “Ow-ROOH!” – ala Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. When pool leagues became popular in the mid-1980s, Fanger and I played on different teams up until about 1112 years ago. Reunited on the table as teammates, we competed together at nationals in Las Vegas. The last few years my interest in pool faded and we sort of lost contact. But a couple months ago, when I heard he was sick, I felt moved to look him up. As he answered my knock on his trailer door in early May, I could tell at first glance he was in a bad way. When he said he had to quit playing pool and couldn’t ride his motorcycle anymore, I knew it was serious. We sat around for a couple hours, BS-ing about the old times. Some things hadn’t changed, as he invited me along for a boat ride this summer. Back again was his shoulder-length hair. Resting among the clutter was the very same Mosconi book he’d loaned me 35 years earlier. Fiesty as ever, Fanger refused to pay for expensive health insurance after retiring, and was waiting for his Medicare to kick in, before seeing a doctor and getting the meds he needed. I called him a couple weeks later, but my plans on visiting more often came to a halt on May 24, when Jerry Crider passed away of natural causes, three weeks before his 65th birthday. At the funeral, I was reminiscing with his best friend, Mike Leach, who related how Fanger had told him the “You’ll never be better than me” story. This surprised me, since he and I had never talked about it, and I didn’t think he’d even remember it. But the kicker was, he explained to Mike he did it with the intention of motivating me. It worked, and even though I never got as good as I had hoped, he helped me reach my potential. So goodbye for now, Fanger. When we meet again on the other side, let’s play some pea pool with Joe, Chuck, Bud and Eddie. And thanks again, old friend. CURT SYNNESS is a sports writer for the Helena Independent Record. The ‘Onion’ Rolls
Rack ‘em Billiards in Medford, Oregon holds an open 9-ball tournament on the third Saturday of each month. Limited to 16 players, the field was full again for the June 20th tournament. Recent Seattle transplant Zack Leech, well known to the Seattle pool community as ‘Onion’ bested a tough group of players to claim the $250.00 first prize. Leech recovered from a close winners’ side loss to defending champion and points leader Jesse Allred and charged back to win the race to 7 final. John Cassidy had a strong showing, losing only 2 matches to Leech, and finished 3rd. Steve Heiman eliminated past winner Walt Dorsey, and ended up 4th. Dorsey and Zack Leech Ken Cavener rounded out the money spots with 5th and 6th place finishes. A big thank you goes out to all the players for their support, and we’ll see you on July 18th.

Snohomish County APA
Division High Point winners and Session Champions from summer, fall and spring came together to compete in the largest APA tournament in Snohomish County on June 13th/14th and June 20th/21st. Sixteen 8-Ball teams along with seventeen 9-Ball teams met at Uncle Jack’s Billiards & Lounge to take part in the 8-Ball Winners: Debi’s Aces tournament they have worked for all year to compete in, the Snohomish County APA 8 & 9-Ball Championships. The top 8-Ball and top 9-Ball teams win their entry to the APA National Team Championship at the Riviera in Las Vegas, NV. Several of the first round 8-Ball matches were played decisively with the Billiard Junkies from Uncle Jacks making quick work with a 3-0 win against the Straight Shots who play out of Danny’s Midway in Marysville. Billiard Junkies continued the pace with a 3-1 win against the Drunken Lords, and 3-1 win over That’s a Patch to earn a spot in the quarter finals. Fast & Easy from the Madison Pub started the day by taking the Wolf Pack down in round one. They then went to joust with the knightsofthegreentable also from the Madison Pub. This round wasn’t fast or easy by going hill/hill. When it was all said done the knights had to retreat back to the castle with 3-2 loss. The first day ended with Hooked Again making slow tedious work in the process of eliminating the Fast & Easy 3-2. Hooked Again (Danny’s Midway), slipped a bit in the first round, but pulled out wins all the way thru the B side to work their way back to the winners bracket by beating Masters of the Cheap Shot, from Danny’s Midway. The Drunken Lords of O’Finnigans Pub were the next victims of Hooked Again. Organized Chaos was the next in line to succumb in a 3-1 loss in the quarter-final match. Drunken Lords took down the Highway 9er’s out of Ace’s Casino, to meet up with the Billiard Junkies. Meanwhile in the previous match, the Billiard Junkies sent the Straight Shots to play the Highway 9er’s on the B side. Straight Shots moved on to sober Drunken Lords III to return to the winning side of the bracket. Two heavy weight teams came head to head in the first round. Xtra-Stout whose home bar is Shotze’s Rack & Roll, brought down one of Marysville’s strongest teams, That’s a Patch!, who then hit a winning streak against Rack’em Up from Saigon Gardens and knightsofthegreentable. Unfortunately, back on the winning side, That’s A Patch! ended up in a match against another heavy hitting team, last year’s Snohomish County APA Chuck 8-Ball Champions, and possibly the strongest APA team in the county, the Billiard Junkies of Uncle Jack’s. This heavy weight match went 4 rounds to chalk up a win for the Billiard Junkies. Organized Chaos also of Danny’s Midway, was hot right from the start by putting the Drunken Lords III into the B side of the bracket, and sending the Wolf Pack from Las Coronas back into the kennel. Organized Chaos then runs into a brick wall with Hooked Again at the quarter finals. This wall took 4 matches with Hooked Again taking 3 of them with authority. Debi’s Aces of Ace’s Casino emptied the Xtra-Stout keg and then broke the trajectory of the Straight Shots. The Aces took all of the highly favored teams head on and the worked their way up the winning side without visiting the B side of the bracket.

The final round came down to Hooked Again vs Debi’s Aces to determine which team will travel to Las Vegas to represent the Snohomish County APA at the 8-Ball National Team Championships. This match was played skillfully and carefully. The first match went to the Aces, while the 2nd and 3rd went to Hooked Again. With the score sitting at 2-1, the Aces needed to play their cards just right to get thru this “must win” situation. Match number 4 was no easy task for the Aces, going straight up to the hill. The Aces made it over the top of the hill, to take it all the way to the 5th match. Hooked Again had to fold their cards to Debi’s Aces, who are the 2009 Snohomish County APA 8-Ball Champions. The winning teams will be playing for the APA National Championship in Las Vegas. 9-Ball was no less exciting with many of the 8-Ball teams eliminated the week before came back to take their chanes playing the 9-Ball tournament. Macon Bacon out of Saigon Gardens went two rounds then out to finish their pork rinds and 9-Ball Winners: hot sauce. Foxy’s went on hot streak out of the box to cross the Highway 9er’s and were turned back across the road. Ringer’s of O’Finnigans stayed on the winning side of the bracket all the way to quarter finals against the Highway 9er’s and then turned back across the road as well. After a long weekend of 9-Ball the final rounds consisted of Rack’em Up vs That’s A Patch and Highway 9er’s vs Ringers. That’s a Patch had Rack’em Up rack one too many times to move on to the final round J n J Kipp Dennis with a 53-27 win. It went down to the wire with Highway 9er’s squeaking past the Ringers to play That’s A Patch in the final round to play at the APA 9-Ball Team Championship in Las Vegas, NV. In a long battle it came down to a neck and neck race with a Skill Level 8 beating a Skill Level 5 for the victory. The APA is the world’s largest pool league and is generally considered the governing body of amateur pool. Snohomish County APA host 8-Ball and 9-Ball leagues thru out the county. The first year at Tahoe I was a referee, but in 1983 I became Richie’s tournament director. The tourney only got bigger with more players and more money. Once again I put together a souvenir program which was a slick looking publication. This was the year the young wunderkind Earl Strickland beat the mighty Steve Mizerak in the finals. During the final match he made a jump shot, which had to be a first on national television. Earl won $33,000 plus a new car! These successful events allowed Richie to branch out to other Caesar properties; putting on tournaments at Caesars Boardwalk in Atlantic City (also won by Sigel) and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (a second win for Earl). I directed all these events along with Barry Behrman, who assisted me in Atlantic City. Richie was on a good run and things were looking up for professional pool. It all came crashing down at Caesars Palace in 1985. Everything looked good during the course of the event, and it came down to Dallas West, Terry Bell and Earl on the final day. Once again the matches were being televised by ESPN, and the players were required to sign television releases prior to the taping. This is where things got sticky. They refused to sign the releases on the grounds that they were not being paid residuals for reruns of the shows. At that time it was ESPN’s custom to rerun shows multiple times. In fact they still do it today. Signing television releases is normally a formality and the players were getting some very bad advice. The rumor was that Bill Cayton of “Big Fights” wanted to break Richie’s grip on men’s pro pool, and this was a way for him to do that. Cayton was the promoter of the Legends of Pool (also on ESPN), featuring all the old time greats. If he got Richie out of the way he could get the current champions under contract as well. ESPN went ahead and taped the matches in the hopes that the players would relent and sign the necessary releases. They never did and the shows never aired. That was the end of RDF Productions, Richie’s pool promotion company He never staged another tournament and pool lost its best promoter. The players had essentially shot themselves in the foot. It wasn’t going to be the last time either. At nearly every juncture in professional pool the players have made decisions which have proved costly to their bottom line. I attribute it to bad advice and some piss poor decision-making by the top players. Someone should have told them that repeated airings of televised matches was the surest way to stardom for any pool player. Look what it’s done for Allison Fisher and the other stars of the WPBA.

The Easy Way Revealed

Last month I gave you a position pattern problem (shown in the diagram) involving a rack of 8 ball that you began with ball in hand and choice of balls. The goal was to run out the rack with just stop shots. The first reader to come through with a solution was Mike Fieldhammer who is a certified instructor in the Minneapolis area. You may have seen Mike at tournaments where he works as a photographer when not playing matches or heard Mike as a commentator on OTBnTV. Bob Jewett Shown is the solution using the solid balls. The best way to find this pattern is to work backwards from the 8 ball. The only pockets possible for the eight are the lower left and lower right corners. The 3 ball is close to the line from the lower right pocket to the eight, so it is our candidate “key” ball. It’s not hard to find the pattern with this start. Note that which pocket each object ball goes into is important since with a perfect stop shot the cue ball is left one ball away from the position of the ball you just sank. For a puzzle like this that’s helpful -- the stop shot on the 3 that gets a stop shot on the 8 must come from the direction of the 5 or you won’t be straight in on the 8. Of course in actual play, the balls are rarely configured so obligingly. Even if they do offer an easy path, it’s important to take care on each shot to make sure the shots stay easy, maybe by adjusting a little from the stop shot ideal. An example of this is the shot you play on the 5 to get on the 3. If you pull the cue ball back from the 5 a little with unwanted draw, it will be hard to maintain the position on the 8. On the other hand, if you let the cue ball drift forward slightly after hitting the 5, the slight angle on the 3 is not a problem as the 12 can stop the cue ball if it drifts in that direction. Another tricky spot is the 7-4-6 sequence. If the cue ball drifts forward after the 7, the shot on the 4 will cause the cue ball to drift towards the 8 and possibly hide the 6 behind the 13. If it’s May in Las Vegas then it must be time for the 29th Annual VNEA International Championships. For the second year, OTBnTV Live was on hand at the Riviera Hotel and Casino to film “All the Action All the Time” during the VNEA Championships. The OTBnTV booth was set up in the “Finals Arena” with 8 pool tables and bleacher seating on 3 sides. This
was an ideal set up so that all the audience could have a great view of the playing area. Don “Cheese” Akerlow was joined in the booth by guest commentators Samm Diep and Mike Fieldhammer who added their knowledge and expertise to the coverage. OTBnTV streamed LIVE for 4 days during the event: the singles finals and the team finals. From our vantage point
we were able to focus in on all but two of the tables. The audience for the LIVE streaming was awesome. We had viewers from all over the world tune it and it was interesting to find out where people were watching from and what time of day it was in their part of the world. From May 21-30, 2009 there were 5,305 unique viewers that watched 4 days of the live
streaming and 7,117 viewers that have watched the VNEA after we stopped streaming until June 10th. And you can still log on and watch any of the videos that we recorded. We took 835 photos of pool players during VNEA Nationals. There were 34,882 views of photos from the event. This number is through May 30th and does not include any numbers since then.

Cascade Pool League Team Knocks And the Door Opens for the VNEA International Champions By Andrew Monstis/Sassy Campbell
Sometime when bad things happen, the old adage that good things can come out of it is true. Our team ‘Opportunity Knocks’, out of Cascade Pool League in Portland, Oregon, had struggled to get VNEA qualified, had no outside funding, and had barely pulled it together to get us to Vegas this past May. Once there, we couldn’t wait to take on all comers at the Valley National Eight Ball International Championships. But before the team event started, one of our team members biking down from Oregon took an unexpected detour to a Reno hospital. Pat Schumacher suffered serious injuries when he crashed his motorcycle south of Tonopah, Nevada, just 180 miles north of Vegas.
Pat was immediately life-flighted to the ICU at Reno’s Renown Hospital, where he faced numerous surgeries and a much longer road ahead than just to Vegas. Team members Ivan Doty, Steve Tune, and Glenn Atwell, and I were ready to quit the event and head to Reno. We got word that Pat wanted us to continue, so we contacted fellow VNEA player Bill Rosenberry, who graciously agreed to head for Vegas, facing his own hardships to come on such short notice. Our focus became, “Kick A** for Pat”. We knew he was in terrible pain and was undergoing surgeries for a crushed spine, badly fractured ankle, splintered ribs, and that he had a neck fracture, internal bleeding and shoulder damage, but we had to concentrate on every shot, every game, every match. about him being stuck in that hospital so far from home with no one there for him. We couldn’t even talk with him for days because he was so out of it, but the troops back home began to take care of business for Pat and keep us posted, and we knew he was stable and the prognosis was good over the long term. Our wins started stacking up. There were no easy wins, but opportunity was knocking. We felt a need greater than any one of us to win this event... and we did. For the 2nd time in 9 years, Cascade Pool League gained the title of VNEA International Team Champions. Lightning does
Pinion, and many others, including our own Glenn Atwell, the reigning United States bar box champion, landed in this division. Our first goal was to win our first match. Our second goal was to make it to the final chart. Our third goal was to take the Championship. We were put to the test every match but somehow we stayed focused on winning. All the matches in one bracket were played on tables next to each other, so we got to preview the next teams we would be playing. Knowing what was coming was interesting. We found no easy 1st Men’s/Mixed Intermediate Team: Opportunity Knocks (OR)
strike twice in the same place. And Pat is getting his own trophy as a member of our team. He was on the Group Therapy team that won the event in 2000, along with Glenn Atwell and Andrew Monstis. The VNEA event in Las Vegas was spectacular! Thousands of men and women amateur pool players attended from all over the world. Players with skill levels from novice to intermediate and advanced. They came to play for ten days of singles and teams events in 9-ball singles, 8-ball singles, scotch doubles, mini-tournaments, speed pool, artistic Men’s Intermediate 9-Ball Singles pool, 1st Len Hekbert (AB) and the different team events — on 260 tables. Everyone was up for the challenges. There were teams from all over the world. Spain, Australia and Germany had top players in the Intermediate Division. Players were running out racks all over the place— it was scary and tough - but this is the epitome of what pool is all about. To be there is the treat of a lifetime for any pool player, and the best part is, every amateur pool enthusiast can experience these greatest of events. The VNEA is in its Women’s Master 9-Ball Singles 29th anniversary year of its international 1st Pearl Ortiz (NM) Women’s Master 8-Ball Singles event, which is the second biggest pool 3rd Pearl Ortiz (NM) event in the world— and Las Vegas is the place to have it. If you haven’t been to one of these huge events in Las Vegas, you really need to check yourself. Make your plans, start saving every week, put a committed team together, and then show up ready to play. Even before the competition begins, hundreds and hundreds of pool players are milling around the tournament charts or podium or hallways, feeling the excitement, telling each other story after story about pool, about events, about getting there. You hear a lot of languages spoken and some players have to have interpreters. Vendors are all over the place, selling the latest pool stuff. There are entertaining events and free pool coaches and exhibitions and parties. There’s just no reason not to have a great time. The pre-event gambling action on the pool tables is exciting, too... at almost every hour something is happening. The intermediate team division was studded with top nationally recognized champions and their top-notch teammates. Players Troy Frank, John Kucharo, Sam Kirby, Gene Albrecht, the VNEA Open 8-Ball Champion Bill
pickings...all the teams played good, if not great. We felt if we just played our games, we’d be in every match, but we also knew we’d have to dig deeper and deeper as we progressed through the brackets. Since you never know for sure how you or your teammates are going to play, going into a known process still is always a journey into the unknown. We always had to remember not to fall prey to the tendency to let down or relax after an easy out... past experience says never assume that any game or match will be easy. Like I’ve said, no match was easy for ‘Opportunity Knocks’. We won by skill and sometimes by luck. We played teams from New Mexico, Colorado, Winnipeg, Canada, Wisconsin, two teams from Indiana, and same Michigan team twice. In the hill match against Michigan, the anticipation was high — we needed this match and we played like we wanted to win. We won the point by one point in a nail biter when an opportunity knocked and allowed Bill to finish, 157-156. Being in a finals match is the most exciting thing any pool play ever experiences. In the VNEA team finals, the crowd watched from bleachers and the match was displayed on a big screen TV. The match was live-streamed (contiued on page 23)

When the National Championship Series (NCS) was initially launched fall 2008 only players who were eligible to hold a U.S passport could participate. However, there are many players who have resided in the U.S much of their lives as permanent residents and after much consideration it was decided to amend the NCS eligibility requirements. This allows players who have been long term permanent residents the opportunity to also compete for a U.S national championship title. Effective immediately the policy now states: The NCS is open to all players, men and women, amateur and professional who are either U.S citizens or U.S permanent residents. If a permanent resident, the player must have lived in the U.S at least 12 consecutive months prior to their first qualifier. Qualifiers are currently scheduled all over the U.S in 14.1, 9 and 10-ball. The NCS 14.1 National Championship will be at Comet Billiards, July 31-August 2, 2009 and live streamed by Accu-Stats. The NCS 9-Ball and 10-Ball are scheduled to be held back to back September 3-7, 2009 at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino with The Action Report (TAR) streaming both events.

On the B side were Cheryl Walters vs. Stacy Novack and Susan Williams vs. Angel Paglia. Angel went on to play Heather in the finals! The first set was all Angel, she shot with an amazing 97% accuracy (Missed 1 ball the whole set) and won the set 7-0! The second set started and Heather made it on the board first. Angel dominated the next 6 games. Then in game 8, a miscue on the 7-ball by Angel Angel Paglia allowed Heather to capitalize on a 3 ball out which made the score 6-2. Final Standings for the “Chip” Classic pool tournament held at Eagles Club # 326, Bozeman Montana. This tournament was held Saturday June 13, 2009 with a great turnout of 37 players. However the weather was nice and sunny so a some of the players had a lot of other things to be doing. A special Thank You goes out to all the players that showed up, and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a “Chip” Pool Tournament is I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball, Singles. When you pay your $10.00 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. You are paid immediately for every game you win, instant gratification. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the player with any chip/s left. Every player won as least one game. Everybody made money. Diablo Valley Pool League News
The Diablo Valley Pool League held their 5th women’s tournament this past June 21st at the Office Bar, located on Willow Pass Road. Sharing the event with the fathers day celebration, the tournament was small as expected however the women that showed up all had a respectable game and were looking for a few extra bucks to go do their shopping. The fight for the catbird seat came down between Darnelle Dominguez and Jess Quinata. Dar managed to beat her sister Denise in a race to two. On the bottom bracket, Jess Quinata won her matches against Kristen and Stacy Wilson, sending them to work the looser bracket. Playing some of her best pool, Jess defeated Dar and assumed control of the catbird seat. On the looser side Stacy Wilson worked her way back to play Dar Dominguez and won the match to get a chance to play Jess for the top spot. She won the first game but made mistake on the second game, allowing Jess to win the game and the tournament. Congratulations to Jess for her victory.
