Bob Zack Wins 14.1 at Sam’s Billiards As so often happens when Bob Zack shows up for the 14.1 Tournament at Sam's Billiards, Bob Zack wins the 14.1 Tournament. It was a very good straight pool tournament on June 6, with lots of strong players in the 16-player field.

Although John Fleming led Bob through more than half of the final match, Bob came back to win 50 to 35. John earlier iced Vinny Mellott with his deliberate playing style. Vinny edged Pete Gates in a 50 to 49 squeaker for 3rd place.

There were 5 runs of 25 or more balls and the four finalists owned all those high

Winning Posture

The Game of Loop

Good posture can really say a lot about a person.

Think about the player that’s slumped over in his chair or practically spilling over the edge of his stool. He’s looking all around the room and now he’s text messaging his buddies. What impression is this player giving you? Does he intimidate you with his killer instincts? Does he look like he’s focused and ready to snap off a tournament?

Next, take a look at the guy that is sitting upright with his cue in his hand, ready for action. He’s Samm Diep staring at the table. He’s alert and intense.

He acknowledges you when you call a shot and he sits deliberately, barely moving when you’re at the table. Doesn’t he look respectful and professional? Isn’t he just oozing of poise and confidence?

Now that you have a visual of these two players, which one are you?

Take a look at my favorite player, world champion Ralf Souquet from Germany. He’s a world class player in every respect of the term and no matter what he’s doing, he’s conducting himself as such. Whether he’s sitting, standing, resting, drinking, or waiting to pounce, he carries himself deliberately. Even if he’s leaning forward, he’s not slouching.

Every ounce of his energy is exerted with intent and purpose. They don’t call him “The Surgeon” for nothing. Ralf understands the importance of good posture with every move he makes.

Do you have an uncanny knack for scratching from every position imaginable? Here’s a game that turns that disability into a game-winning skill.

The game of Loop -- pool spelled backwards -- is simple. Just scratch object balls off the white ball -- we better not call it the cue ball because it is never used as the cue ball. The diagram shows how to start the game. Rack 15 balls with the white ball at the apex. Take an object ball in hand in the kitchen, hit the white ball first, and try to pocket the break ball.

The game continues by cuing any object ball to hit the white ball first to scratch the ball you cue.

You get one point for each ball scratched, and the winner is the first to score 8 points. Each 6 10 7 8 15 shot has to be “called 4 12 5 3 and clean.” The pocket 9 2 11 14 13 must be indicated if not obvious, the ball you cue Foot spot with must hit the white ball first and you must not hit any other ball on the way to the pocket, but it’s OK to hit the white ball twice (double kiss). If the white is pocketed it is spotted on or behind the foot spot. If an object ball has to be spotted, it goes on or below the head spot.

As for strategy, position play consists mostly of leaving the white ball close to a pocket but not too close. For safety, leave the white ball far from the object balls and on a cushion. Advanced techniques include getting the white ball close to a pocket and then playing several shots that just nudge it, and playing the white ball into clusters to make more opportunities. Remember, you can’t use the ball you cue to break up clusters.

If you want a longer game, play to a total of 50 points or so. When you finish a rack, just rack 15 balls up as for the opening break shot.

This game was one of many interesting games and betting propositions described by a wonderful pool author named Willie Jopling.

(His real name was Bill Marshall.) Sadly, Willie left us last November 24th, but he left behind many treasures like the game of Loop.

Maintaining good posture not only makes you look like a champion but there are countless benefits to keeping yourself vertical. Here are just a few: Good posture facilitates breathing. Sitting up straight naturally enables you to breathe properly. Poor posture invites restricted, shallow breathing a host of other problems. For an extreme example, bend over and breathe. When you’re slouched or bent over, your esophagus, trachea, and other vital parts are all distorted and restricted. Sitting up and breathe deeply. Stay relaxed and calm. Who doesn’t want that in their pool match?

Good posture increases concentration and thinking. Better breathing means more oxygen into your body which means more oxygen to the brain. Basically, it helps you think more clearly. I think we can all agree (continued on page 22)

Max Eberle It was an exciting weekend in Mountain View, CA as California Billiard Club hosted the first stop on the California Pool Players Tour the weekend of June 12-13. Forty-six players from as far as Grants Pass, Oregon, Fresno and Los Angeles came to compete for a share of the $3700 prize fund.

The dual bracket format had an even mix of Pro/A and B/C players racing to 7 in 9 ball. The top 16 who returned on Sunday for a redrawn, mixed final money bracket were (A)J. Gregory vs (B)E. Urbano; (A)R. Mistica vs (A)M. Eberle; (B)T. Ansari vs (B)K. Koo; (A)A. Kang vs (B)E Ramos on the winners side, and (A)D. Alpajaro vs (B)C. Robinson; (B)O. Perez vs (A)R. Aldana Jr; (A)B. Crockett vs (B)E. Diwa; (B)H. Spenea vs (A) J. Orque on the one loss side.

Deo Alpajaro had a strong third place finish with wins over Changa Robinson, John Warren, Rylan Hartnett and Ramon Mistica, before falling to Amar Kang.

In the end, Max Eberle of Los Angeles went undefeated with wins over Ed Ames, Ryan Long, Jaynard Orque, Jeff Gregory and Amar Kang for the hot seat. Amar’s path included wins over Colin Mazaika, Bonnie Plowman, Robert Aldana and Ramon Mistica.

In the final race to 9, Amar led early but Max was never too far behind.

He took control after Amar missed the 9 in game 12 and tied up the match at 6. Max won the next 2 games to reach the hill. Amar broke in game 15 but scratched. They traded shots on the 4 until Max pocketed the ball and easily ran the rest of the table for the win.

Said Max: "The new California Pool Players Tour has a great format that will spark the participation of all levels of players in California. It's a great way for amateurs to have a fair shot at a strong finish, and for the stronger players to test themselves and win some decent prize money. I plan on playing as many CPPT stops as possible!"

Tour founders Vincent Paul Bramwell, LouAnne Laflamme and Christy Hawley extend their gratitude to California Billiard Club for hosting the first stop, to all the players who competed, and to all the fans who came to watch the action. The Tour cannot be successful without you!

How to Speak English

There were a couple of interesting discussions on a popular billiards forum recently that dealt with English. Not the brand of English we speak every day, mind you, but the brand we smack a cue ball with every time we play pool.

In the first discussion, the question was asked, does the term English mean only side spin (hitting the cue ball left or right of vertical center), or is it proper to also apply the term to hits along the vertical axis, above Roger Long and below the horizontal axis, such as you would do for follow and draw shots?

The replies that followed the original poster’s query left little doubt that players overwhelmingly believe English should mean side spin, only.

They noted that it was Englishmen who introduced the technique of using side spin to Americans in the early 1800’s, and the Americans quickly went to calling the phenomenon, putting “English” on the ball.

Billiard instructors who chimed in on the subject held that it is more difficult to explain to students what English is, and how it is supposed to be used, if the term includes shots with no side spin. They maintained that terms like “top” and “bottom” work better for hits along the vertical axis.

Then, just as though it were needed, a second discussion ensued concerning the proper spelling of this beloved term. Someone pointed out that some instructional authors use an upper case “E” as in “English,” and others use the lower case “e” as in “english,” whenever they write anything on the subject.

To this, one author commented that he prefers the upper case spelling because his dictionary and spell checker neither recognized “english” as a word. (Funny, my spell checker keeps changing the e to upper case every time I write the word English. There, see, it did it again! I’m just going to leave it be this time.)

So then a second author came along who claimed that the lower case spelling is more appropriate regardless of what any dictionary or spell checker says. To bolster his argument, he gave several examples where lower case spellings have become the norm; the most popular of which is the term, french fries, instead of French fries. (Stupid spell checker of mine is doing it again!)

This then led to a friendly debate as to which spelling should actually be considered proper. To settle the matter, a poll of the forum’s general readership was taken, and at last count, the lower case spelling was winning by a four-to-one margin.

So there you have it. All side spin is english, but not all English is side spin.

Question: “I am new to billiards and I was wondering what you would suggest I do to improve my shot aiming. I can always see the angle needed to pocket a ball but can never hit it perfectly. Any tips or advice?”

Answer: Pocketing shots are broken down into different parts; Melissa Little 1) Look at the object ball to the pocket.

3) Walk into the shot 4) Practice strokes 5) Follow through the shot.

6) Stay down till the cue ball stops rolling.

During my clinics one of the first things I ask my students is “do you have a pre-shot routine”? I proceed and have each of them jot down what theirs is… then I encourage them with mine.

Everyone needs a pre-shot routine – this way you’re developing some structure and discipline in your game. We all strike for consistency….

CPPT EXPANDS

The past two years CueSports International (CSI) analyzed the growth of player’s skill levels at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and decided to create a new rating classification: the Advanced Division.

CSI has also reclassified all active Player Members to be included in the other singles divisions (based on their individual ability).

The Advanced Division was created to add a level of play that falls between the Open Division and the Master Division. The goal is to allow more players to participate and to further competitive opportunity.

The following new Advancement Criteria is effective June 1, 2010 and is retroactive to all players who have cashed in the singles divisions of the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships since 2005 and all recognized BCAPL state and regional rankings.

Team Masters: All Team Masters will be placed on the Advanced player list. The Team Master category is based on an individual’s participation on a team’s finish at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.

State Masters: Players who are currently listed in their state as a Master player (but who have not participated in the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships) may remain as a Master or be moved down to the Advanced Division based on known ability and state and regional tournament results from 2005 – 2010.

Player Members: All new Player Members, beginning June 1, 2010 will be required to enter the Advanced or higher Singles Divisions, ranked based on known ability.

New and established Player Members (who have not cashed) may request consideration to enter the Open Division, but will be assessed individually.

Players on the Advanced list may petition the BCAPL to be removed.

The Advanced category is based on individual play. If we have a tournament history of that player in singles that indicates that they are not an Advanced level player, they may be removed from the list and put back into the Open division.

The California Pool Players Tour is excited to announce the launch of its Southern California Tour, bringing its unique, dual-bracket format and strong focus on player development to the talented players in that region of the state. “We’ve had strong interest in the Tour since we began publicizing it on Facebook and our website in April, and we did a lot of networking at the BCA event in Las Vegas in May.” said Tour founder Vincent Paul Bramwell. “Several players from Los Angeles came to the June stop at California Billiard Club, and many of the players that I have communicated with from the Southern California area encouraged us to get things going down there sooner rather than later.”

Dates are confirmed at Danny K’s in Orange on August 7-8 and College Billiards in San Diego on September 18-19. The College Billiards stop will feature a Dave Whitsell custom cue for raffle. Multi-Winners Abound at the So many divisions!

So many winners and multidivision champions!

As with each of the six National Championships produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – and this year welcoming its new league and championship sponsor: Lucasi Hybrid Cues – the annual spectacle at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, June 6-12, showcased formats that Jeff Heath encouraged many different winners…in many different formats…for many different skill levels…along with multi-titlists in the higher-skilled divisions.

Multi-titlists included the likes of: Debra Aarens (Las Vegas, NV) who anchored the Women’s Open 8-Ball Team Champion “Smokin’ 8s,” the same Women’s Open 9-Ball Team runner-ups, and placed as the Women’s 9-Ball Singles runner-up; Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) who won the Men’s 9-Ball Singles crown and shared top honors as well with his Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles partner, Jessica Frideres (Fort Dodge, IA) [Jessica also anchored the champion Women’s Open 9-Ball team “Which Witch Is Which” as well]; Christy Goldsmith (Henderson, NV) who won the Women’s Speed Pool Challenge, placed 2nd in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles and 2nd again on Vegas’s “I Had A Plan” team in the Women’s Open 8-Ball T e a m s ; Beth Fondell Jerrod Frideres and Christy Goldsmith (Owatonna, MN) who won the coveted Women’s Master 8-Ball Singles crown and placed runner-up with partner and Men’s Speed Pool Champion, Jerrod Frideres in the Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles category; Edward Mataya who was runner-up in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles and anchored both the repeating champion “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 9-Ball team from Tacoma, WA and the same “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 8-Ball Team 3rd-place finisher; and Mary Rayner (Calgary, AB) who captured the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Singles title and placed 2nd with partner Brian Bird in the Open 8-Ball Scotch Doubles division.

DVPL Winter Team Results The Diablo Valley Women’s winter session came to and end last May. After 32 weeks of battling for top prizes.

Thirteen teams signed up for the challenge and eleven sponsors supported their efforts. Congratulations to the Office’s Team Secret Sauce for coming out on top after a ferocious fight with last years champion The Junior Mints from the Vinnies bar. At the end they top previous champs by only a half of round point. The leagues run a double round format for the 32 weeks of play. The total payout back to the players was a total of $12,211, so you see folks on this side on the hill playing pool means cash. All the teams got paid out cash plus the top 10 shooters of the league, also got cash. This is a handicapped league and it runs at a 135%, geared to protect or even out the skill level from new developing teams. Top teams need to shoot their best to overcome it, middle of the road teams, are the ones being totally affected by this, because they struggled with consistency to overcome it. Our bottom half teams love the system, because it gives them a bit of an edge when they get awarded certain number of balls per round.

The Dominguez twin sisters; Denise and Darnell, are excellent shooters, and we are delighted to have them join our DVPOOL .

They were joined by pro player Eleanor Callado, whose game is just awesome. She has brought the best four local players to step up and meet the challenge. They were also joined by another master’s local veteran Holly Robinson, who also loves nothing but to run racks on you. Gloria Chen and Salene Castaneda also make up the shooting machine. Eleanor Callado also took first place on the top ten shooters, collecting even more cash.

The Scotch doubles 8 ball league for the winter session ended this past may. Twelve teams signed up for the double round session, and generated a total payout of $6,480 back to the participant teams.

The dominating team at the end, were Holly Robinson and Dave Gomez; simply making a statement of their dominance in all the leagues at DVPL. Holly and Dave are part of the Open-Mix team who just crowned themselves 1st and Holly is part of the Women’s team who took 1st place in women’s league. These two are currently the Champions of the 9 Ball scotch doubles league.

Congratulations to them, they have earned every penny they have made. They won 15 matches and lost 7 out of the 22 required. They also won money for the most break and runs with the highest number (8).

The second place got a bit complicated when we run into a 4 way tie.

The veterans Shawn Modello and VJ were of course in the run for top places. They fell out at the very end when they experienced unexpected losses, taking them out of first place. They are, as we all know, one of the best scotch doubles team in the area.

The new team of Robert/Milianne came into the league very strong.

They were taking no victims. They were also tied for second place. The team of Tina /Morris also surprised many by crawling up to the top place.

Cary Wolcott came in as the alternate for Tina, due to her recovery of the knee injury. Morris, an Oakland resident and an excellent shooter adjusted well to Cary’s and Tina’s game, and they were also a in the tie for second place.

Jess and Jeff, another dangerous team, was in the 4 way tie for second.

They all won 13 games and lost 9. The league had to count total number of games won vs. lost to come up with the winner of second.

The next spot went to Kacie and George, both excellent shooters struggled a bit and fell out of the top places when their game was on an off note. Annette Wood tried a different partner this time, joining up with another veteran player bill. They had great days when they were unbeatable however they would run into other teams that simply took them down.

The new team of Tracy Datuin and Kevin Yi, were the surprise team this year. Surprisingly their game came together and they beat several of the top teams and managed to tie it up with Bill and Annette for 7th place.

Frank and Stacy, another two that shoot very well together started very strong but there times when the moon sat in the wrong side, so did their game. They are, however, always a challenge and a contender for the money.

Bill and Cony, they have been playing together for at least ten years, struggled this session. They are both seasoned but failed to deliver when they had to.

Another good team was that of Jenny ad Gary Marcus. His knowledge and experience has pushed upcoming jenny’s game to different levels,

however at the end were unable to deliver the 8-ball to win the matches needed to stay in the race for the top places.

Last but not least the mix of Brenda and Blaine , whose game has become better and better, kept them in the fight on every match, but again, on delivery of the winning 8 ball they fell a bit short keeping the away from the race to the top.

This 8 ball league was an excellent show of were everyone’s game is going with their games. No team was easy, and anyone could walk away with the win. Thank you everyone for choosing to be part of the DVPOOLl movement in our Contra Costa County. The next league coming up will be 9-ball. The challenge my friend is to test the reigning champions, Holly and Dave see if they remain to be the dominating team of scotch doubles.

Justin Tuck Celebrity Billiard Tournament

Parker, Colorado, June 7: Executive Billiards announced their support this past week for the Justin Tuck Celebrity Billiard Tournament held on June 3rd, at Slate Billiards in NYC. In its 2nd year, this exclusive event brought together celebrities and VIPs to raise funds for Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy, an initiative started by Lauran & Justin Tuck to encourage children to READ, UNDERSTAND, SUCCEED and HOPE. Tuck’s R.U.S.H. For Literacy donates books and other reading materials and benefits children in the New York City and Central Alabama communities.

The two winners of the tournament were John LaRuffa and Frank Puusinelli. The tournament consisted of 32-2person teams pre-paired in a double elimination bracket style competition. The tournament was managed by the Billirad Congress of America.

Justin Tuck is an NFL Pro Bowl and All-Pro defensive end who was drafted by the New York Giants in 2005. He recorded a career best 12 sacks last season and his dominant play in Super Bowl XLII helped lead the Giants to victory against the New England Patriots. PIERCE COUNTY TEAMS HEADED TO

By Michelle Barkdoll, Pierce County APA League Operator Three from forty seven 8-Ball teams (June 1-6) and three out of thirty three 9-Ball teams (June 11-13) qualified through their top performance at the Local Team Championship (LTC), to compete at the 2010 APA National Team Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. Malarkey’s Pool and Brew in Tacoma, WA was Host to these two events. Teams will vie for a national title and first place prize money of $25,000 in 8-Ball and $15,000 in 9-Ball. The tournament takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino August 19-28.

During the National Team Championships, the APA also hosts MiniMania events, including preregistered Open 8-Ball Doubles, Open 9-Ball Doubles, Masters Championship and Wheelchair Challenge, as well as a variety of mini tournaments. MiniMania events pay out more than $200,000 annually.

Going into the fifth match with the teams tied 2 to 2 and Sudden Death implemented, Zach White (s/l 3 and a quadriplegic) would play Tom Price (s/l 5). With only one object ball remaining before the 8, Zach had an extremely long and difficult cut. With a special mechanism, Zach shoots

the ball but it hangs the pocket, leaving Tom the chance to make the 8 Ball and win the match.

Hawks

The second team to win their tournament board is the Hawks who play out of the Black Star Pub & Grill in Tacoma.

They won their first match against Phoenix but 5 QBalls & 3 Beer Nuts put the team on the B side. The team battled their way back to the A side by defeating N i c e - n - E a s y, Budwizers and the Eagles, only to met Home Location rival team Off In The Corner. The

Hawks were a ‘split team’ from their opponent group after last Summer Session; however, requalifying with the current roster in the Fall Session. The match was 2-2 at the end of the 4th round, but time ran out forcing the teams into Sudden Death. Danny Brooks brought home this team’s win.

The third board goes to Full Time Billiards (FTB) who also plays out of the Black Star Pub & Grill. They too were a ‘split team’ from the two Finals Match teams afore. This team won their first four matches defeating We Be Stroken, Thanks For Coming (2009 LTC winner), Ain’t Strokin Ain’t Tokin and Different Strokes bringing them to the Finals against Big 8 Baller$. Going into the 4th match, the score was 2 to 1. Tim Kellner (s/l 4) secured their team a slot at the

NTC defeating a s/l 5, 3 games to 1. This will be the fourth time the ‘core’ of the Hawks and FTB has gone to the NTC. OPEN 9-BALL: The Log Cabin Pub in Sumner is the Host Location for the L.C. Niners. Losing their first round to Miyagi n’ Company, they came back to beat Double Fun, Stick It In To Win and All Racked Up. The finals match would be against 2009 LTC winner Hand Picked. With good coaching and a few rolls, the team won the match in 4 rounds 53-27.

Dirty Old Men and Chicks

The second team to win their board is Dirty Old Men and Chicks from Ricky J’s Restaurant & Lounge in Puyallup. The team lost their first match to Krickett’s but came back with wins over The Other Team, Ice Breakers and, Malarkey’s Best to match up against the #1 Misfits in the Finals. With the majority of the Misfits team having played APA since 1994 and Dirty Old Men & Chicks having long-time seasoned players, this was going to be quite a match.

The match went to the 5th round with the score being 4139. The winner of the last match would be the deciding game.

Captain, Jennifer Anderson (s/l 4) matched up against Dionne Alston a s/l 1 and was unstoppable, taking her team to victory.

The third LTC 9-Ball team winner is Players from Krickett’s Restaurant & Lounge in Parkland. Having a ‘bye’ first round, this team took the direct route winning their first three matches defeating Dead Stroke, The Highway and D’s and P’s. In the Finals Match, Players Eric Stewart

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Portraying good sportsmanship and making a competitive sport fun is one of the main objectives in the APA. The winner of this award is an individual that B J “Red” Allen exemplifies this goal.

Promoting growth within and outside teams and is an attribute to the League: Rudolph McPherson: member APA since 1998. Upon Captaining 3 8-Ball teams and playing on a 9-Ball team out of Latitude 84 Sports Bar in Tacoma, he finds the time to help run Singles Qualifier Boards. This person Rudolph McPherson has done an awesome job in promoting the sport and showing his players what fun is!

Active in all League functions, this player is beyond doubt an asset towards the goal of the APA. Congratulations to all teams advancing to the NTC’s and individual award winners! During the LIVE Streaming we met an amazing amount of people with heart, pride and a love for this game. Each photo has its own unique story from Nicole who is from South Africa, to a team from Minnesota who won its 3rd Master Team title in a row. A gentleman from Portugal who’s countrymen supported him and when the LIVE Streaming started, added over 300 viewers from Portugal to watch him double dip his opponent. In the Women’s Masters Chrissy’s brother Andy, sat in to commentate during her team’s victory. To the Sportsmen’s Champion Team who’s hometown bar was watching them LIVE, with Roger’s win over the gengleman who beat him in the finals last year. We were priviledged to have met, filmed and shared a moment with these pool players.

I’d like to take this time to explain why OTBnTV was not on all 9 days of the Championship. The unions at the Riviera had a policy in place that any LIVE Streaming had to be shadowed by a union worker at a cost of $70 per hour. This worker did absolutely nothing to help with the live streaming, mostly sat and did nothing, read

The 30th Annual Championship seemed not to have as many players as the previous two years. In all the singles there were 3,214 players and 557 teams, most teams had 5 players times the number of teams comes to 2,785 (these numbers were taken from the VNEA website and may vary).

Jo’s Saloon just has to be the dumb-luckiest team in OPAL-APA’s history. They won eligibility with the Bronze in Summer, but lost that eligibility when they didn’t play in Fall. In addition, they didn’t even realize that they were no longer eligible until the beginning of the Sunday morning medal round of the Spring Tri-Cups. They happened to have told the team they were playing that they were already qualified and couldn’t take a second regional spot.

When, the other team asked Boomer and I if that was true, we immediately informed Jo’s that they had mistakenly given out bad information-that they were no longer eligible. Surprise! Fortunately, Jo’s Saloon won that round and a Bronze medal which reinstated their eligibility. Otherwise, they would have not been competing in this regional.

The “Don’t Be’s” rallied back with a 15-5 win in the 4th race bringing the score to 45-35 in favor of “Felt Friction.” The last race would be sudden death as they were past the allotted time. The “Felt’s” SL-2 Sean Allie needed to pocket just six balls to close the deal against “Don’t be Scared’s” SL-4 Jesse Adams before he got to his winner’s point.

Larry Carter 1950 - 2010 One of the legends of Olympia pool was lost.

There was a remembrance for Larry Carter at Frankies Bar in Olympia WA on Sunday June 6th at 2 pm.

For those that did not know Larry he was a big part of pool in Olympia and the Northwest through the 80’s and 90’s and into the new century. I first met him in the early 80”s at Casey’s. He was an incredibly cheerful and jovial person who remembered every person he met and treated them with respect. Injuries to his back in recent years made his life a living hell taking with it one of his biggest joys – playing the game of pool. I will always remember him for his best moments on the table many of which I was privileged to see.

Over time, bad posture can result in a multitude of difficulties. For example, it increases the risk of a slipped disc, back aches and pains, poor blood circulation, and possible pressure inside your chest.

Start by correcting your posture during your matches. Then, before you realize it, you’ll be sitting up straighter even when you’re not playing pool. Be careful not to overcorrect your posture as that can cause back problems too. You want a straight, relaxed spine.

June 15th, 2010 • Denver, CO: It started one afternoon at St. Paul’s Health Center in Denver Hugh “Frank” Wilson told Jeremy Bloom that his wish of a lifetime was to get a pool table. Unfortunately, his room at St. Paul’s Health Center really couldn’t accommodate a pool table, so Jeremy Bloom’s Wish of a Lifetime (JBWOL) is partnered with St. Paul’s Health Center and Senior Helpers Denver to grant 83-year-old Hugh Wilson his wish of a lifetime – to play pool again.

Joined by 10 additional seniors and his family, WPBA touring professional and champion Melissa “The Viper” Little was on hand at The Wynkoop to work with the seniors. Melissa even had some special pool cues made for those in wheel chairs. Wish recipient Hugh Wilson played pool as a hobby and even played with Willy Masconi, an American professional pool player nicknamed “Mr. Pocket Billiards.”

Two years ago, Mr. Wilson had to quit playing pool for health reasons.

He was born in California in 1927 and is retired from the air force where he performed as an aircraft and missile frame maintenance technician.

Melissa “The Viper” Little, ranked #15th in the world of professional pool spent a great deal of time playing and teaching the seniors how to hone their pool skills. There were times when it was very clear that these guys knew their game and gave her some competition.

Frank and the guys were thrilled to get to play with a professional pool player as they lined up to receive a photo with Melissa and waited patiently for an autographed poster of “The Viper”.

Bozeman Chip Pool Classic The Eagles Club 326 in Bozeman, Montana held their 18th Annual Chip Pool Classic on June 12, 2010. The Chip Classic operates on a five chip elimination format. Each player recieves five chips. In a race to one, when the player loses a match, they lose one chip. Once they have lost all five chips, they are eliminated from the tournament. When a player wins, they receive $2.00, with the top four players receiving a small lump sum at the end of the tournament. This tournament has proven to be one of the most exciting and fast paced events of the year. Once again, we had another great turnout with 33 players competing. Taking first place in the contest was Britton Schwartzer, Misty DeBates placed second, with Miral Gamradt taking third and Jon Kapphammer rounding out the top four.

What A Weekend! 25 Tri-cup 8-Ball Team Medal winners gave it their all during the weekend of June 18-20 in the double elimination tournament format at Rodder’s in Oregon City. All teams had legitimate hopes of being one of the “Lucky 7” teams to win a slot to the APA National 8-Ball Team Championships this coming August 22-28. We held the first round of play on

Friday night. Saturday we had 3 rounds of play with the last one —the 5 PM round—producing 4 winner’s side team champions to claim their seats on the plane to Las Vegas—and on Sunday we had 3 rounds.

The top seven finishing teams — FOUR from the winners side out coming from the 5:00 PM Saturday round and the THREE teams left standing from the “Last Freakin’ Chance Side” on Sunday’s 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM rounds — would win the appropriated $4,000 per-team-slots which is enough to cover the National Tournament entry, round trip Las Vegas airfare, lodging for all teammates at the Riviera Hotel and Casino as well as enough money left over to eat fine meals at inexpensive diners for the whole team. In addition the one final bridesmaid team received $500 consolation money which brought the total payout to $28,500.

On Friday, “8-9 Suited” chopped down the “Red Fir” and sent them planking off to the Last Freakin’ Chance side then in Saturday’s 9 AM round they arrested the “8-Ball Bandits” and sent them to jail on the one loss side as well. In the 5:00 PM Saturday finals against Happy Fortune’s “Dirty Pockets” who had previously wasted Fortune Star’s “Toadily Wasted”, followed by Back Alley’s “That’s Not My Name.” In the finals for the first set of plane seats to Las Vegas and the first of seven $4,000

Meanwhile on Friday Night Sam’s “Astronaut Cowboys” managed to herd “Don’t Be Scared” off to the Last Freakin’ Chance side to go on and meet Yur’s “Money Shots” on Saturday morning. The “Money Shots” shot the starry eyed cowboy’s right off their rocket saddles to the last chance side and proceeded on into Saturday’s 5 PM finals against McAnulty & Barry’s “O.C. Hustlers Too” who had previously wiped out Fortune Star’s Summer Silver Medalist “Masse’ Hall” who in turn had knocked off River Road House’s “Any Pocket Alice” on Friday night. The finals match went by cautiously slow. By the time they were through with the 3rd race they were already past the allotted time and into sudden death whereby it was a race to one game regardless of skill level. So, Team Captain: Anthony Darnell, and teammates—Kelly Morse, Brandon Houle, Jason Shriver, Jenn Myers, Brandon Martinez, Vince Mills, and Ayron Nassey quietly laid claim to the $4,000 slot and the third set of plane seats to Vegas.

This match went all the way to double hill and to sudden death where —SL-6 Jeff Hayes the team captain from “Jin’s” was matched up against SL-4 Kimberly Engh of the “Kat’s” — both players had multiple opportunities to win, but it was Fall Silver Medalist’s “1st & Only Jin’s” from the Falls division—with Team Captain: Jeff Hayes, and teammates—Keith Bender, Monique Luckcuck, Chris Spear, Katrina Curtis, Jose Angulo, Gary Rike, and Debra Krewson who claimed the Last of the Saturday night $4,000 National Slots, and the day’s last set of plane seats to Las Vegas.

After McMenamin’s Spring Silver Medalists “Straight Shots” had been drank by “Yes We Can” on Friday night they sobered up during the trip to the Last Freakin’ Chance side on Saturday afternoon to kick Obrien’s Fall Platinum Medalist’s “Bustin’ Loose” right out the door to the road home. Next, they made a dead man’s hand out of River Road’s Fall Gold Medalist’s “8’s & A’s” to go on to Sunday morning’s competition against Happy Fortune’s Spring Platinum Medalist’s “Dirty Pockets”. The “Shots” managed to clean out the “Pockets” in a double hill thriller and then found themselves going to the first of the Last Chance finals against the River Road’s Fall Session Bronze Medalist’s “Freak’s & Geeks.” The teams were playing on two tables simultaneously, and even though the “Shots” were up 2-1 over the “Geek’s” the match had gone over the allotted time and into a one game sudden death while the 4th match race was still in progress. The Shot’s won the sudden death match giving them a 3-1 & unfinished match race win. For McMenamin’s Spring Silver Medalist “Straight Shots” with Team Captain, Jesse Marchetti, and teammates—Peter Shafer, Mario & Tina Peralta, Casey Muchmore, Tawnya Baker, and Peter “Hell On Wheels” Ploem had won the 5th National $4,000 slot with reserved plane seats to Vegas.

In the first two table races “The Glad’s” slipped and fell in the mud right out of the gate and quickly got their head’s bashed in by the “Kat’s.” Now down 2-Zip in the overall match score, Glad’s SL-6 Rich Burns also found himself down 2-zip in a race to 5 against Kat’s SL-6 Randall Lusson. Deciding it was time to rise to the occasion, Rich rallied and took the next 5 games straight to win the race 5-2. Score now 2-1 in favor of the “Kats.”

The 7th slot final was a playoff between the losing teams of the last two finals—Sam’s Fall Bronze “Kitty Kat’s Crazy 8’s” and River Road’s Summer Bronze “Freak’s & Geek’s.” . The “Geek’s” won the first two races, lost the third, and the fifth races while the fourth race was still in progress between “Kat’s” SL-6 Randall Lusson and “Geek’s” SL-5 Alison Meacham which was a 5-4 race respectively. Alison won games one and three, but Randall came back with wins in the second, and fourth, and fifth games which virtually made it a race to “2” at that point. Alison took game six putting herself on the hill. However, Randall then rallied back to take game seven to tie the match up at double hill. Now it was a race to one game—Just like Sudden death except for all the pre played anxiety and drama.

Freak’s & Geek’s Four innings later Alison sank the 8-Ball in Terry Pinto, Dan Fendall, and Don “Coyote” Walker, who a properly marked pocket and the match was all over. gave up a large part of their weekend to officiate this Sam’s “Kitty Cat Crazy 8’s” received a check for $500 regional event.

We especially wish to thank John & Cathy consolation money, whereas River Road’s “Freak’s Johnson, and their superb Rodder’s staff and crew for & Geek’s” from the Willamette division with Team Captain: the tremendous job they did in playing host to our special Rhonda Madding, and teammates—Alison Meacham, Alex 8-Ball Team regional event. There wasn’t a single solitary Platinum Medal holder that succeeded in getting to Nationals at the Riviera in Las Vegas. One more race to play for all the marbles—and, of course, it was a sudden death, race to one game between Kat’s SL-3 Kim Premore, and Glad’s SL-4 Shari Christian. The game went nine long underware-changing innings with both players having missed golden opportunities to win...

2010 BCA 8 Ball Team Championship X Tournament

2010 Team Championship X Winners – The Schooner Predators Larry Tulfo, Rennie Amadeo, Jing Gicoso & Bobby Hinkley (Captain Robert Alston was unavailable for final team photo.)

On June 5, 2010 four top teams from the Tacoma and Bremerton Traveling 8 Ball Divisions competed for the Western Washington 2010 BCA Team Championship X Title. This event was hosted by Full Splice Billiards in Lakewood, Washington.

Full Splice Billiards owner, Craig Rittel provided the players with a great tournament venue played on 9 ft. Kasson tables. Craig not only donated the time for the tables and $150.00 additional cash to the prize fund, but also made connections with two greatly appreciated new sponsors, McDermott Cues and J&J Billiards America. McDermott donated a pool cue (Model M91C) and J& J Billiards donated a cue and case which were raffled off a no charge to the players entered in this tournament.

All matches were played on two tables per match which allows the local players the same venue that both our regional Western BCA Tournament in Lincoln City, Oregon and the BCA National Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada uses for their events each year.

This team tournament which provided the players continuous play on Saturday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. simulates the type of play and endurance that is needed when teams are in the finals at the larger BCA tournaments. Each match averaged around 2 hours of playing time.

The format was a race to the first 3 rounds won with 4 games in each round. The regular weekly player league handicaps were used with the difference being credited at 1.5 the normal rate to the lower team per round. The increased handicap benefit per round levels the playing field between the stronger veteran teams and the lower handicapped teams.

The Schooner Predators played well and stayed undefeated throughout the tournament to obtain the 2010 Team Championship X title. All players had a great time and would like to thank the owner, Craig Rittel and his staff at Full Splice Billiards, McDermott Cues and J&J Billiards America for making this tournament a great success.

June 19-20, 33 women representing British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon, and Minnesota descended on Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA for the NWPA’s third tour stop of 2010. With 33 women, sponsors increased the prize fund from $500 to $750 added.

Located at 445 Tacoma Avenue South Malarkey’s has 11 Brunswick Gold Crown 9-foot tables and 10 Valley barbox 8-foot tables, an awesome juke box, and tasty food. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m, there is something for everyone. There are pool tournaments 3 days a week, June Maiers karaoke on Saturday nights, and Open Mic nights thrown into the mix. The NWPA would like to thank Malarkey’s for their gracious hospitality and continuing support of the NWPA by hosting their 2nd event in as many years.

Play began at 10 am Saturday morning and there were several new players that we would like to welcome to the NWPA: Alisha Rogers from Everett, WA, Anne Bounds from Seattle, WA, Jennifer Wishinski from Surrey, BC, Gretchen Szeibert from Steilacoom, WA , and Denice White from Clackamas, OR. After a long day on Saturday, only eight players returned for the main event and six ladies came to compete in a $100 added, $10 entry Second chance event.

Remaining in the winner’s bracket were Liz Cole vs. Suwanna Kroll and June Maiers vs. Jana Montour. Suwanna defeated Liz in a hill-hill battle and June defeated Jana 7-4 to advance to the hot seat match, which June won 7-5 to take the point. In the loser’s bracket the two matches included Kimberly Kirk vs. Shelby Locati and Regene Wentzell vs. Cindy Sliva. Kimberly and Cindy would advance through their morning matches 7-1 and 7-5 to play Jana and Liz. Jana defeated Kimberly 7-3 and Cindy defeated Liz 7-6 to advance. Jana then defeated Cindy 7-4 and Suwanna 7-1 to play in her second final of 2010. With a runner up performance at the previous event, June was also competing in her second final in as many stops.

Jana won the lag, but straight out of the gate, June was shooting with strategy and patience. Excellent defense and shotmaking lead to June with a 4-0 lead before Jana could even get on the board. Jana won game 5, but then a combination of safety play and luck would see June win the next two racks as well to take a 6-1 lead. Jana was laughing to herself as it seemed that the rolls were not with her. June left her with very few opportunities through this point in the match, however; Jana ended up taking the next couple racks when June’s defensive play left unplanned openings for her to get through (6-3). Continued safety prowess followed by a runout by June gave her a 7-3 lead.

Uncharacteristic misses and a little bit of better luck would have Jana win the next two racks to bring the match to 7-5. It seemed that her luck was changing, but then a runout ended shortly with a scratch on an 8 ball, June was left with ball-in-hand on the 9 to reach the hill first.

Game 14: Down 8-5, June broke pocketing the 7 ball. June pocketed the 1 and then made a rushed attempt on a 2-9 carom for the win. Jana played a three rail safety on the 2 ball, which resulted in June having only a bank shot, which she missed. Jana ran out…

Game 15: Jana broke dry, leaving June jacked up over the 6 and 8 balls. June missed a reverse angle cut on the 1, leaving no easy shot on 1. Back to back safeties left Jana shooting a two way shot on the 1, which she made. Jana was left with a table length reverse angle cut, which she missed and then scratched. With ball-in-hand, June took her time and ran out the rack to win her first event on the NWPA tour. Congratulations to June for going undefeated through a tough field to win her first event of 2010.

Hard Times June Jamboree DENVER QUALIFIERS FILLED

June in Sacramento is a great time of year. The days start out in the cool 50s and start to warm up to the high 70s then the low 80s. This June was a little different. The Saturday One Pocket event was held inside at a cool 68 degrees with HOT action and even hotter temperatures for the weekend. The Saturday Mid 80s for a high gave way to a really HOT 90+ degree Sunday. Way too hot for most outside June activities.

Hard Times Jamboree event was the recipient of some very much appreciated bonus “Added Money” for both the One Pocket and 9 Ball events. Mr. Al Barber is celebrating his well deserved retirement in the pursuit of playing in as many pool tournaments as possible. Mr. Barber 1st Place, Rafael Martinez donated $1000 to the Jamboree; $500 to each event. All the players gave their new friend a huge round of applause when the added money was announced.

The One Pocket and 9 Ball events were won by professional pool player Rafael Martinez. He won all his matches to take both event ‘undefeated’. There were some close matches, Billy Palmer and Ramon Mistica took the measure of Rafael’s skill for some tight and well played contests.

Small-Ball Targets May result in a Bulls-Eye for Position!

Playing Small Ball Position Shots The small ball shot is demanding. The intimidation of trying to score to the 3rd ball which doesn’t lie near a corner or cushion and is only 61.5 mm in diameter is challenging to say the least. To attempt to execute the scoring aspect and position for these positions sometimes leaves a player in doubt. With some essential knowledge of the ball lines and common sense a player can feel more confident about approaching these types of challenging positions.

In Diagram 1 we have a typical small ball position. The shot has the scoring ball in an unforgiving area of the table. The shot can’t be played 5 cushions or 4 rails short because of the kiss. The backup 5 rails will miss long every time on a new cloth.

The player must hit the ball more fully. In playing position, you must drive the 1st object ball around the table 5 cushions as diagramed, (a little hint), when playing shots off the outside of the ball naturals, hit the 1st object ball a little fuller, especially when applying low English.

Diagram 2 shows the 3rd ball in that same difficult position, this time we have the option to play this type of shot short 4 cushions to score easily and the position is built in. The player has to be careful to avoid a possible kiss by the long cushion right before scoring. The timing for this shot is important. The 1st object ball must arrive at its resting place before the point is scored.

T h e position in Diagram 3 shows another fine example of a small ball position shot.

This time the location of the 3rd ball is such that the shot could be played 5 cushions to just score the point with a chance of kissing the point away. But this book is all about playing position. As in Diagram 1 you must drive the 1st ball around the table 5 rails to the long cushion. But this time, the player needs to send the object ball behind the 3rd ball to achieve the desired results as shown. This shot requires the 1st ball to travel farther than the cue ball; both balls must come to rest at their final position at the same time.

There are always going to be those types of shots that need extra attention to just score the point. You are not alone attempting to play position from them. But knowing how to make the cue ball and 1st object ball travel around the table at different speeds is a key element in position play.

The techniques using various strokes are the foundation to proper position play!
