by Michelle Barkdoll Three from fifty four 8-Ball teams (May 9-15) and three out of thirty five 9-Ball teams (May 19-22) qualified through their top performance at the Local Team Championship (LTC), to compete at the 2011 APA National Team Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. Malarkey’s Pool and Brew in Tacoma, WA hosted these two events. Teams will vie for a national title and first place prize money of $25,000 in 8-Ball and $15,000 in 9-Ball. The tournament takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino August 18-27. During the National Team Championships, the APA also hosts MiniMania events, including preregistered Open 8-Ball Doubles, Open 9-Ball Doubles, Masters Championship and Wheelchair Challenge, as well as a variety of mini tournaments. MiniMania events pay out more than $200,000 annually. Open 8-Ball: Smooth Strokers from The Right Spot in Fife gained eligibility into LTC by becoming two time Division Champions in the 3 to 5 person team format with Bob, Jim, Alex and Dale as the core players. In the spring session the team moved into the 5 to 8 person format and added Danny, Nicole, Tom and Carol; four more veteran APA players. Smooth Strokers team won their first four matches defeating veteran teams ~ Thanks for Coming, LC Hammer Heads, Accidental Defense and Cuatro Veinte Esa bringing them to the finals match against Positive Flow (Bowlero Lanes). At the fifth match, teams tied 2 to 2, sudden death implemented, lucky for the team Danny wasn’t on an ice cream run and available to play against another skill level 5. A repeat of 2010, he brought his team to victory! The second team to win their tournament board is Cool Runnings, which play for Latitude 84 Sports Bar in Tacoma. Two members on the team, Rudolph and Stephenie qualified on four teams. That’s one way to stack the odds for Nationals in your favor! The other team members: Sophia, Jerry, Tony, Page 2 of 4 Tracey, Thomas, Roland play multiple nights too; a couple have even had the opportunity once or twice to play NTC’s in the past. played their first four matches defeating Eagles 8, The Expendables, Warped & Twisted 2 and No Mercy which brought them into the finals match against Bastonado’s. Tracy, Thomas and Roland won three matches in a row to have their team be triumphant. The third board goes to Full Time Billiards (FTB) who plays out of Cheers Bar and Grill in Puyallup. Joe, Debbie, Tom, Tim, Robert and Chad qualified for LTC by becoming Division Champions fall session. Spring session Charles and Drew were added. Doubling their chances of winning, Joe qualified another Open 8 Ball team by having four common players on that team. Winning their first two matches against Seldom Sober in Corner and The Untouchables, they lost their third match to On The Snap. After beating Nice Rack, Scream-n-Eagles and Just Fun N, the team would get a rematch in the finals against On The Snap. The overall match was tied 2-2 and Chad(7) was matched up against Dionne(5). With the race being 5/3, Chad won the first four, then Dionne the next two; however, Chad pulled out the last game to send his team to Vegas. OPEN 9-BALL: The Schooner Pub & Galley in Lakewood is the host location for the Schooner’s Wild Card. The team consisting of: Tammi, Dionne, Ryan, Eric, Bill, Gerald, Kathy and Jhoana won their first three matches against L.o.v.h.w.c, Don’t Take This Personal and Misfits 17 Yrs Strong. Now they would be matched up against Pops Ballers, a tough team that either won play-offs or was high point’s finisher this league year. After finishing the

Schooners Wild Card third match, the score was 34-26. Then Kathy, skill level 1, would get a 20-0 win against a skill level 2. This huge win took the team to victory with 54 points. The second team to win their board; Morton Hears A Who from the Black Star Pub & Grill in Tacoma. This team consisting of: Al, Bob, Theresa, Tom, Greg, Kathy, John and Lou, lost their first match to Ohana II. They battled their way back by defeating All Racked Up, Dirty Dawgs and Niners to play Smooth Strokers from Sumner in the finals. After the fourth match, the score was 45-35. Starting the fifth match in sudden death, John(4) would need to make 21 points before his opponent, skill level 3, reached 25. Points being doubled, John took his team to a win by reaching his goal. The third LTC 9-Ball team winner is Kricketts from Krickett’s Restaurant & Lounge in Parkland. Mike (Capt.), qualified his 9 Ball team last year for Nationals. This year his team is comprised of more veteran APA players: Moi, Jeremy, Danny, Drew, Jasper, Dan and Casey. There was no stopping this group, they beat Do What You Love, The Other Team, B.o.h.i.c.a., The Oly Gang Plus 2 to meet L.C. Niners (2010 LTC winner) in the finals. The Kricketts team needed to get 3 match points to reach 50 and Danny was just the guy to do it. Vegas NTC bound!

TOP GUN AWARDS: Players based on their win percentage from the Summer Session throughout the Spring Session, playing 20 or more matches during the league year, are eligible for the annual Top Gun Award. 8-Ball Dionne Alston (page 39 top left): plays at the Schooner Pub & Galley in Lakewood. Busy Start

Craig Oden, Alex Bradeley, Tournament Director, Jimi Johnson On Memorial Day, May 30, The Broken Rack held its annual open 8-Ball tournament with $150 added to the prize fund. A full field of thirty two players arrived that afternoon to battle it out in a double elimination format (race to 3 winners/race to 2 losers). The field was loaded with great players from all over Northern California. The winner, Craig Oden, went on a tear after losing his third round match to Jimi Johnson; Craig won five matches in a row, prevailing over such players as Billy Palmer and Jeff Gregory, to face Jimi again in the finals. Craig had to beat Jimi twice in the finals to take first place, and he did just that, without losing one game! It was

CHICO CHAISSON MEMORIAL Many of the same players were back just two weeks later on June 12th for the Chico Chaisson Memorial One Pocket Tournament—a race to two on both sides. Rousseau “Chico” Chaisson, who passed away in December 2010, was a beloved and respected member of The Broken Rack community. Born in 1912 in Louisiana, the youngest of 9 children, he left for New Orleans as a teen. He worked in the kitchens of the great restaurants of that City, gaining skills that were no doubt wasted when he served as a cook in the army during WWII. After the war he migrated to the East Bay where he worked for many years at the Heinz cannery. Billy Palmer remembers Chico as a friend of his father’s who would get off shift and come down to the pool hall to hustle a game. Chico also played infield in the semi-pro Negro baseball league back in the day when some outstanding ball was played at San Pablo Park in Berkeley. Right up to his death, Chico loved to handicap the horses and all the major sports and liked to back up his predictions with cash. He didn’t play much pool in his last years, but he liked to watch and to coach and his mind remained sharp. Chico would have been 90 years old on June 12. The Broken Rack added $300 to the tournament played in his memory. June 20 marked the end of the most recent session of The Broken Rack team 8-Ball league. Sixteen teams divided into two divisions played for 14 weeks with final ranking in many cases coming right down to the wire. The first place team in each division—Those Guys and You’re Buying—took home $840: Top Shooters—Mike Suhr and Eric Ashley—won $100 each. A for fun league, we pay all the way down so every team gets something back from the prize fund. And we always end the session with a payout party with food buffet and a final match giving each team one last chance to win a little money. As usual, a great time was had by all. t to Summer As of this writing, the most exciting event of the month is still to come. Allison Fisher, fresh off a first place finish over Ga Young Kim in the US Open, is coming to The Broken Rack on June 25th! She’ll be playing a 10-Ball Challenge Match against the Rack’s House Pro Eleanor Callado, a player in her second year on the WPBA tour,. This will be a rare appearance in the SF Bay Area for the player AZ Billiards calls, “the world’s best woman player in the history of pool” and her many fans here are thrilled to have the chance to meet her in person and watch her play up close. Of course some of them will be rooting for local favorite Eleanor Callado, whom many have watched play since she was a teen, building a resume that includes 2010 West Coast Women’s Regional 9-Ball title, BCA Junior National titles (2), and Associated College Unions International National titles (4). Whether it’s the legend or the challenger, its sure to be an entertaining afternoon. JUNIOR MINTS TAKE THE CAKE Erin and her mighty force teammates show the women of DVPL that they can have a sweet smile and a sweet name and at the same time make their presence felt on the pool table. The women’s league consisted of 14 teams and ran from Sept. 2010 thru April 2011. The total prize raised was $11,774 and paid all teams as well as top ten shooters. The top shooter was Eleanor Callado with an average of 10.23. The most improved player receives a plaque in recognition for their growth in the game. This season there were two Most improved players recognized since between the two players there was a only .05 difference. Congratulations to Laura Tow and Roxanne Skane for continuing to work on their game and showing it during their league play. This session there was no dominant team. At one point the previous summer champs from Cue N Brew had the lead but couldn’t hang on. The race went down to the last position round and in some cases even went down to the very last ball. The champions of last season Secret Sauce had a slow start and managed to get on top 4 not being able to move up as they bumped on to Cony’s mix who took enough rounds to slow them down. DVPL women’s league is known for its competitiveness and for the defensive play of many plus the continue improvement from all participants. The handicap of 135% tested top 4 team’s skills during entire session. Shawn Modelo Champion The Diablo Valley Pool League is proud to be the home league of Shawn Modelo. She has claimed the title of ACS National Champion in the Women’s Senior Division for the second year in a row. (2010 & 2011). She has also taken the entire category for BCA Women’s Senior Division. Congratulations to Shawn, for her commitment to learning the game and continuously striving to improve and maximizing all the tools needed to shine this past May. We asked Shawn to share some of her thoughts. How does it feel to win two national championships within the same week? “Winning the ACS National Championship in the Women’s Senior Division in 2010 was emotional. Not having won a National tournament before it was difficult not to give into any self doubt. I know that I was focused (at least that is what my Pop said I looked liked) and played well. But winning was extremely emotional. Satisfying. Repeating the win again this year at ACS was even more rewarding. It wasn’t a fluke or chance. But then 2 days later leave the Tropicana and go to the Riviera to play in the BCA Tournament and win my division was even more awesome. I know I was overwhelmed because I had seen a picture of me when I just received my very first 1st place BCA trophy and my smile was HUGE!”

time came into play when I just had to make it or lose the match. After all the practice there is the mental and emotional side of the game. I made personal sacrifices on my time. Improved the quality of my practice time. Allowing myself to win and play well. Dismissing all the distractions during my matches. One gentleman who has known me from the beginner days came up to me to congratulate me on my win and the other gentleman I was talking to said “and she won a lot of money too!” and he looked at me and said “she didn’t do it for the money, she did it for herself.” I believe that is exactly it. It was all about me! I stayed focus for the whole 2 weeks I was there. I took care of myself. Rested. I ate my Jr.Mints. I have a strong winning team. My Dad gets a lot of credit for his patience and giving me the benefit of his knowledge of the game. Sweating all my matches no matter how painful to watch! My husband gets credit for his patience and giving me his observations of my game and providing me a very nice to table to practice on! My practice friend Leslie gets lots of credit for the hours she has put in with me. Being able to understand my perception of the game and talk about it and talk some more, knowing I can’t shoot and talk at the same time! A big part of my winning team is my peeps. When the crowd is cheering for you it gives you the extra confidence to play well. I appreciate them a lot. When I left Vegas I was satisfied with my accomplishments but I was acutely aware of all the things I wanted/needed to work on. So it’s back to more practice.

1) Please describe to us what it felt like to Win 2 Championships in one week.

What did you do to prepare yourself for this kind of event? “I practiced all aspects of the game, the break, banks, cut shots, safe play, etc. Then I practiced some more. It was the hours of practice and playing time, the foundation of my game that backed me up thru out all my play. In the ACS tourney on the very last 8-ball for the win I put the cue ball in the center of the table 8 inches from the 8-ball that was in the center of the table straight into the side pocket. My heart was racing and I think I wanted to burst out into tears. When I looked at it my first thought was WOW look at that. Did anybody see what I just did to get there? Then it was OMG don’t miss this one! I had to get up, take 2 big breaths, chalk and rechalk, stroke it extra strokes to make sure I made the shot. In the BCA tourney the very last game of my match I was getting ready to break and my Pop called me aside and said “This is exactly what we practiced for. It doesn’t get any better than this!” and he gave me a hug. Ok Pop! I did not leave myself so well on the last 8-ball shot and again my practice

At Rodders in Oregon City on Friday June 12th the first round of the Open 9-Ball Team double elimination Regional kicked off at 7 PM with a field of 24 Tri-Cup Team Medalists from the League year’s past 3 Sessions. They were shooting it out for (6) six slots to the August APA National Team 9-Ball competition at the Riviera in Las Vegas. For the most part, it was pretty even competition as the majority of the team matches went all the way to the 5th and final race before a winner was determined. In several instances the team matches went to the very last rack—and on a few occasions — even to the very last ball. The last two losing teams on Sunday received $500 consolation money. The total payout was $25,000. When all the dust settled, the following six teams emerged with plane tickets to Las Vegas: In Saturday’s first winner side final, the Shamrock’s Spring Session 2011 Tri-Cup SILVER Medallion winner “Jerry’s Kidz,” from in the Mid Valley division --with team Captain: Gerald Gross, & teammates—Wes & Amanda Gagnier, Shannon Gee, Lynn Bui, Jesse Garner, and Diana Warnock secured the first $4,000 dollar APA National Championship slots by defeating Sam’s Billiard’s “The Sniper Shooters” 51-29. Winning the second winner’s side final was: Ringo’s Fall Session 2010 Gold Tri-Cup Medal winner “Str8 Up Chaos.” from the Skyline division—with team Captain: Jason Larsen, and teammates—Frank Kincl, Chip Bugbee, Erin Terry, Jacob Moore, Dee West, Nathan

Rack Em Up Women’s 9-Ball

DVPL expanded their wings the last June 4th, by putting together, promoting and supporting a 9-Ball Women’s Tournament at Rack Em Up for our local women eager to take the game to another level. The event was to help those women to prepare for the upcoming first stop of the Tiger West Coast Women’s’ Tour (TWCWT) another sponsored event by Diablo Valley Pool Leagues. There was a variety of participants, some with little exposure to this kind of event and some with some. The event was a race to five on the winner side, and race to four o the looser side. It was a double elimination event and DVPL sweeten the pot by adding $40 to the total pot. The game of 9 ball requires lots of skill and a some luck.. Finding the right combination of luck and skill will dictate the end result. Shawn Modelo One of our veteran local players Tiffany Walker, who has never played on the tour battled her way past Shawn Modelo( ACS 9-Ball Champion 2010 and 2011). She defeated the Shawn on winner bracket to move and compete against Cathy Reaves for the “Hot Seat.” Cathy is a strong 9 ball player and has shot tournaments for many years. She looked totally comfortable at the table and beat Tiffany to take over the so wanted “hot seat”. Meanwhile, Shawn was busy working the looser side determined to get a second chance at the top money and she did of course. On her way from the looser side she defeated Tiffany and Annette Woods, who also

proved to be playing well enough to get on top 4. Shawn won the first race to five in a close match. The determination that we saw in Las Vegas at the ACS and BCA events was on with her again. She proceeded to win Cathy in an excellent show of pool and camaraderie from both of them. The few of us left to watch final match very much enjoy the concentration and desire to compete and do their best from both of them. Congratulations to all 18 participants of this event,,,,it showed that our local veterans are striving for a higher game and Cathy Reeves expanding from just 8-ball players to now 9 ball. This was preparation for the first stop of the Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour . Let us take a minute to thank our host Rack em Up, our DVPL and of course all of the women that showed up to compete. Story and Photo By Suzanne Smith June 11-12, 26 women came out to compete at Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA for the NWPA’s third tour stop of 2011. With the WPBA’s US Open coming up the following week, it would prove to be a great warm up for NWPA representatives, Kim Jones and Liz Cole. With 26 ladies, Malarkey’s added $500 to the Main Event prize fund. Located at 445 Tacoma Avenue South Malarkey’s has 11 Brunswick Gold Crown 9-foot tables and 10 Valley barbox 8-foot tables, a superb juke box, and fantastic menu. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m, there is something for everyone. There are pool tournaments Wednesday and Friday for 9-ball, Sunday afternoon 8-ball, and 211 10-Ball tournaments on Tuesday and Sunday. And for the nonpoolplaying folk there is karaoke, Comedy Club, and Open Mic nights thrown into the mix. The NWPA would like to thank Malarkey’s and room owner Clark Smith for their gracious hospitality and continuing support of the NWPA by hosting their 3rd event in as many years. Play began at 10 am Saturday morning and although the field was small, there was still one “new” player to the tour that we would like to welcome: local veteran player Clara Silvas. After a long Saturday, five ladies came to compete in a $100 added, $10 entry Second chance event. With only 5 players, the 2nd Chance event ended up being a round robin format that ended up going into the final round to determine the winner. Clara Silvas edged out Suzanne Smith to win top prize. Congratulations Clara! In the Main Event, eight players remained on Sunday morning. On the A side Liz Cole vs. Cindy Sliva and Kim Jones vs. Jana Montour. Cindy and Kim defeated their opponents 7-4 and 7-3 to square off for the hot seat which Kim won 7-4. On the B side Debbie Cicchiti vs. Mona Remedios and Mikki Small vs. Shelby Locati. Mona defeated Debbie 7-4, while Shelby survived a hill-hill match up with Mikki to advance to the next round. Fresh off of their first losses, both Liz and Jana regained their fire power and defeated Mona and Shelby 7-3 and 7-5, respectively. The next round, Jana defeated Liz 7-4 to earn her spot in the B side final against Cindy Sliva. Both players were shooting well; however, Jana capitalized on a few untimely mistakes by Cindy to take the match 7-4. This being Cindy’s first stop in 2011, it was great to

see her resume right where she left off in 2010, her sound fundamentals are always a pleasure to watch. Kim Jones path to the final: Stacy E (4), Eve S (1), Shelby L (2), Jana M (3), Cindy S (5) Jana Montour path to the final: Jessica O (2), Mary H (1), Andrea SM (2), loss to Kim J (3), Mona R (3), Liz C (4), Cindy S (4) Straight out of the gate, Kim was shooting extremely well and Jana appeared to be struggling. After the lag, Kim and Jana both won their first game breaking. Tied at 1, Kim then made a beautiful 5 and 7 ball out to go up 3-1. Game 5 looked to be more smooth stroking by Kim, as she broke and ran down to the 8 ball, but then missed. An uncharacteristic scratch while pocketing the 8 let Kim back to the table with ball in hand on the 9 to go up 4-1. Jana and Kim exchanged racks for the next four games. At 6-3, Jana broke dry and Kim ran out to get within two games of the win. In game 11 (7-3 Kim), Kim broke dry leaving no hit on the 1. Instead of pushing, Jana opted to go for the hit and ended up fouling. Kim ran down to the 8 and missed it allowing Jana back to the table. Jana pocketed the 8 and 9 to make the score 7-4. In game 12, misses and safeties by both players gave Jana the opportunity to run from the 5. Jana pocketed the 5, 6, and 7, but then scratched to give Kim ball in hand with two balls. Kim pocketed the 8 and 9, reaching the hill first. In game 13, Kim broke dry (for the sixth time of the set). Jana took her time to compose herself, walking around the table an extra time. Jana pocketed the 1, but ran into the 2, forcing her to play safe which she missed. Another miss by Kim allowed Jana back to the table, with a tough out, but doable. Jana, too, missed her shot on the 2. Kim pocketed the 2, but then hung the 3. Jana ran the 3, 4, 5, and 6 but then rattled the 7. Kim ran the last three balls to close out the game and win the match 9-4. Great tournament ladies. Story and Photos by Suzanne Smith On June 25, 13 teams turned up at Askarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA to play a little scotch doubles 8 ball. With $100 entry fee per team and the $400 added by Askar, grand prize was $500 for 1st place. The only restriction for teaming was that regional grand masters were required to play with an open player. With a lower number of teams than expected, Tournament Organizer Margie Avlon and Tournament Director Chris Rogers decided to make it a one day event. Play started at 10 am and there was really no favorite with such a strong group of ladies turning out. It was a race to four on both sides, BCA 8 ball rules, and Live Streaming was provided by Rail2Rail Productions for the entire event. Cindy Sliva and Andy Ruth charged through the A side of

THE PASSING LANE SHOT (reprinted from September Issue 2003) This month’s Artistic Pool Shot is from the Masse Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (D.O.D.) of 8. Object ball letter coincides with corresponding pocket letter. This skill shot is one of the most talked about shots form ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic. I was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base the first time I heard about this shot. It was in the mid 70’s. Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth The way it was shown to me, the set up looked wrong for this shot to have any chance of being made. I thought the show was impossible. I didn’t pay any attention to the shot until I saw it again in Nick Varner’s book. It still looked wrong in the diagram, so I called Nick and asked him how the shot was executed. He told me and I realized that the cue ball and object ball had to be farther away from the rail. Well through trail and error on my Gold Crown One, I finally figured the shot out. I would have to say I have well over 350 hours of practice and execution time during exhibitions in this one shot. This is my wife’s favorite shot. Let’s take a good look at this shot and give you some knowledge you may not have. This shot looks like it defies physics! This skill shot is a half masse. The set up for this shot is critical!

You may put the cue ball and object ball F anywhere within the noted 1 x 1 square as shown in the diagram. The cue ball and F ball are froze together. If they aren’t froze together the shot WILL NOT work! I’m going to reveal where I put the cue ball for my setup. I put the cue ball 1 ½ ball spaces from the head rail and 1 ½ ball spaces from the long rail. Now with the cue ball tapped lightly into the cloth I freeze the object ball to the cue ball. The line of centers between the cue ball and object ball are pointed to the right of pocket F, at the long rail by pocket F. If you extended the line of centers through the rail it would point at about ¾ to 1 diamond up from pocket F. Why is this aligned so far to the right? It is aligned so far to the right because you have the full length of the table in which the object ball will throw to the left before it gets to pocket F, (contact induced throw) caused by friction. The aiming area for the cue ball is shown in the diagram. Seeing this shot is a half masse the butt end of your cue is usually 45 degrees or less. Mine is usually less. You will be cueing the cue ball at about 2 o’clock for the masse effect to work on the cue ball. You don’t hit this shot with a lot of power. As the beautiful summer weather finally made its appearance, a slug fest made its appearance at Stixx & Stones Billiards. The Pacific Northwestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest pool players came prepared to bring their A game for the Summer 9 Ball Bash Tournament. In attendance were representatives that came from all over the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Play was fiercely competitive that even the unexpected happened. Experienced or favored players were victims of defeat as one by one surrendered to the loss side. Dan Louie, Stan Tourangeau, Damian, Lance Mason were just some of the unexpected players that got sent to the one loss side. Sunday was no different. As the players came back for the final matches, play was even more ferocious as the battle hardened came fully determined to claim the top prize. With a night to rest, each player came determined not to give up one rack to their opponent. Unfortunately, as with any matchup, there must be a winner. Defeat was readily handed out. Eddie Mataya defeated EZ. James Gifford defeated Chris Byers. Frank Rocha defeated Aaron White. Dan Louie defeated long time friend Stan Tourangeu. No stranger to competition, Dan Louie faced off against Bremertonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own James Gifford. Both players came in on the one loss side. Shots were skillfully executed as James made it to the hill first. Unfortunately experience determined the victor in this match as Dan capitalized on a misaligned shot from James to run the rest of the rack to relegate James to third place. The final match was between undefeated Eddie Mataya versus Dan Louie. Eddie went through the entire competition playing extremely well. Simply defeating Dan in one last match ensured Eddie 1st place. However, Dan would have to defeat Eddie not once, but twice in this double elimination tournament. Silence was in the air as all eyes focused on these final racks. Dan drew first blood winning the first match. Eddie, however, would not sit idly by and won the second rack. Games were traded back and forth, but in the end, Dan won the first of the final two matches, finally sending

Eddie to the one loss side. After a short intermission, the final match of the night between Eddie and Dan proved to favor Dan. Rack after rack would find Dan showing that he would not let this battle out of his clutches. Unfortunately, battle weary Eddie could not find his shot and succumbs to Dan, winning only one rack in this race to seven. Dan came out on top winning top prize, 7-1. Fisher won the opening break, but couldn't capitalize, giving the first game win to Kim. But Allison quickly tied things up after Ga Young missed a jump shot, then broke and ran the next two racks to lead 3-1 in the race to seven. In game five, players traded safes for a few shots until Kim got the first clear look at a shot and ran out to trail 2-3. In game six, a missed bank on the two by Kim again put Allison in the driver's seat. She ran the rack... to the nine... and uncharacteristically missed,

leaving Ga Young Kim an easy nine to tie the match 3-3. She broke and ran to the five, nearly missing it but slopping it in the other corner (with apologies to her opponent), then made a 6-9 combination to pull ahead 4-3. Breaking in game eight, Kim ran to the three, played safe, but the cue ball slow rolled its way into the corner pocket. Fisher played safe and Kim kicked and made a ball, but missed a bank. Allison played a long six ball and caromed in the nine to tie it up 4-4! A scratch on a safety attempt in the next game might have resulted in a runout for Kim, but missed position on the five ball caused a miss on a tough five. Allison ran out to again lead the match, 5-4. Fisher broke in game ten and played safe on the one. Ga Young made the hit with her jump cue, but left Allison a clear shot on the one. Over the past few years, I’ve had the tremendous honor of watching and interviewing so many of the best players in the world. Amidst the countless hours of world class pool, I’ve seen the best do some amazing things. However, most of the time, they aren’t really doing anything special. They’re just making smart decisions. Those are the things that make the game look so simple for them. Each of us can win more games by choosing ideal patterns and learning from what the pros would do. Samm Diep Volume 1 takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada during the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open 10Ball Championship. In a race to 8, Spain’s David Alcaide is up 7-5 against Dennis Haar from Indiana when he left himself a funny angle on his final 8 ball.

He has a few options. Option A. Slide into the 10 ball and play the 9 in the opposite corner. Option B. Draw across table, missing the 10 ball to also play the 9 in the opposite corner pocket. Option C. Use high-right to spin around the 10 ball to play for a much larger window for position on the 9 in the side. David chose Option C. Option A is risky. Clipping the 10 ball too thin could send the cue ball loose. Hitting the 10 ball in the wrong place could leave you jacked up over it. With the position of the 9 ball, there is always the risk of scratching in the side pocket if left with the wrong angle. True, the scratch can be avoided, but it may cost you a tougher shot on the 10 ball.

B Option B is not ideal either because you ultimately send your cue ball against the line of the shot. If your plan is to play the 9 in the corner, draw an imaginary line to the object ball from where you want the cue ball to be. With this shot, the cue ball is coming across that line. This means there’s only a small window for when your cue ball is in position. And again, with

C this shot, when you come too far you’re flirting with the side pocket scratch on the 9 ball. Option C is the most practical choice in this scenario. The right hand english can make it easier to pocket the ball. It also assists the cue ball to continue rolling on its organic path. As an added bonus, the target area for position on the 9 in the side is much greater than playing it in the corner. The cue ball is coming into the line of the next shot and with an angle anywhere within the shaded area, position can be easily achieved to have a good shot on the 10 ball. Remember, you always have options. Sometimes the ideal shot is more obvious than others. Look at the entire run out, not just the shot in front of you and choose the best pattern that allows you to play natural position and lead the cue ball into the line of your next shot, not against it. That’s what the pros would do.

Many players find themselves in this situation -- it is one of the most common discussions on internet pool forums. If you are thinking, “That’s me!” the following suggestions will help you to move up. All that’s required is that you put in the Bob Jewett time with focus. About the “focus” part.... Pool halls are filled with people who are just batting balls around without purpose or plan. If that describes how you spend your time, you’ll need to change if you want to improve. If you don’t feel you can commit at least three hours a week to this self-improvement project, then you may as well stop reading now. That’s OK too. Lots of people are happy enough with their present ability, and you can see lots of ball-batters who have been having 1 fun at the same level for 20 years and will continue to have fun 2 just where they are. Still here? Good. Here are seven parts of the project. 1. Get a notebook. This is to keep track of your progress, record practice drills, diagram shots, and use as a diary for events such as tournaments. A small spiral notebook Back-and-forth drill that fits into your shirt How far? pocket or cue case How thin? pocket is fine. I filled How many times across? up a dozen of them How many in a row? when I was spending serious time learning the game. Lately I’ve scanned them to computer files for easier reference. 2. Practice shots you have trouble with. Note which shots are a problem in competition or Part 3 and find or figure out drills that include them. An example from my own learning process is in the diagram. A common play is to run a ball down the cushion and send the cue ball straight across the table. You need to develop both aiming accuracy and speed control for this shot. Begin with an easy version such as the 1 ball where the distances are short. Can you send the cue ball to the shaded shape target 7 out of 10? How about when the distances are longer, as for REJ

Answer:

When I was younger, I dwelled on what was right/wrong as far as position. My long time coach, would encourage me that there really isn’t a right/wrong way to run out as long as you get out. But there is always a simpler way of running the balls. Not always on TV do the commentators get it right either. When I teach, I always recommend fighting for that natural angle to the next shot and a rule of thumb is try and be as simple as possible; if you don’t have to be extravagant with the cue ball then don’t. twice a world champion in English 8-ball and has only been playing competitive 9-ball for two years, was literally oozing with confidence. Everything about him—the way he walked around the table, his extremely fast play, the way he stared down layouts and especially the audacious way he potted difficult balls and moved the cue ball around—spoke of a man with a winning attitude. He never gave his opponents any breathing room, pounced on the smallest of mistakes and quickly put racks on the board. Hsu must have not had time to realize what hit him. The 22 year old Taiwanese had literally come out of nowhere to reach the finals of the China Open. He’s ranked number ten in Taiwan but he had never before played in an international men’s event. Still he showed some of the same powerhouse skills that Melling had exhibited when he blew out the Philippines Ronnie Alcano earlier in the day, 11-3. It didn’t take long into the final race to 11, alternate break match to realize, though, that Hsu was in over his head on this day against the white hot Englishman. The two were all

The European number two is also looking very seriously at a spot on the coveted European Mosconi Cup team. With this extremely impressive performance in Shanghai this week, the 32 year old Brit appears to have a very bright future in pool. square after four racks but from there Melling got on his motorcycle and ran away with the match. In rack five, Melling made a very difficult pot on the one that opened up the rack and got him the lead. In the next frame he played a world class snooker off of Hsu’s safety that quickly led to another point. A minute later he was up 5-2 after a break and run out. From there, the fast playing Brit piled on the points, all the while taking on and converting daring shots that most players would be afraid to pull out of their bags. Hsu simply had no answer. Melling raced right to the finish line and the championship with a resounding 11-3

It’s Yukio! Story and Photo by Ted Lerner (Doha, Qatar)—With a super cool demeanor and a red hot stroke, Yukio Akagariyama of Japan won the 2011 World 9-ball Championship, defeating the Philippines Ronnie Alcano in a tense and scintillating finals match on Friday night, 13-11. Akagariyama won the title with a brilliant display of pressure packed 9-ball before a cheering partisan crowd of close to 1500 people, most of them Filipinos, at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, Qatar. The victory capped what has been a tremendous recent surge for the 36 year old. Back in May Akagariyama made it to the semi-finals of the World 10-ball Championship in Manila. Then in early June, he placed 5th at the China Open in Shanghai. In Doha Akagariyama played solid and steady all week. But he also had moments when mistakes crept into his game, especially late in matches during the knockout stages, when the pressure became too much to bear. But always the 36 year old from Nagano quietly sucked it up, and got right back down to business and made it across the finish line. It’s exactly what happened on Friday night. The match had just about everything fans of championship 9-ball could ask for. The lead and the momentum swung both ways on several occasions, and the outcome was in doubt right up until the last ball dropped; both players made jaw dropping shots and strung racks together while showing absolute mastery of the table. Each player committed a handful of errors too, but under the weight of the moment this was to be expected, and in fact made the match an even more nerve jangling affair.

Alcano, who had just come off a definitive semi-finals win over compatriot Dennis Orcullo earlier, won the lag and immediately broke and ran for the first point of the match. Akagariyama, who advanced by beating England’s Mark Gray 11-10 in a thrilling semi final, tied it in the next rack after Alcano bobbled the 5-ball in the corner pocket. In rack 3 Alcano fouled leaving Akagariyama a tempting 1-9 combination that rattled in the jaws of the pocket. With the 9 still sitting in the corner, Alcano sent the crowd into fits when he caromed off the one ball, and sent the cue down table, back up off of two rails and into the 9 which fell in for the win. From there the pair stepped their games up a gear, as Akagariyama broke and ran, and then Alcano fired back with one of his own to go up 3-2. They split the next two racks with each converting one clutch pot after the next. At 4-4 the match was already shaping up to be a high quality battle of attrition. Akagariyama grabbed his first lead in rack 9, and stamped his class on the match. Alcano left the 2 ball in the jaws, and the Japanese continued with his concise and steady shooting to move up by 1. In the next rack Alcano tried to jump but left the 2 ball open. Again, Akagariyama coolly picked off the balls and now led 6-4. Alcano got one back in the subsequent frame with a break and run. But Akagariyama countered yet again with one of his own to move up 7-5. The 36 year old from Nagano was clearly focused like a laser, while potting balls with deadly accuracy and a fine rhythm. He was going to be very tough to beat on this night. It was more of the same for Akagariyama in the next rack as Alcano missed a makeable two ball and the Japanese methodically began to pick off the colors for what seemed like a sure 3 rack lead. But just as he was about to put a stranglehold on the momentum and the match, Akagariyam left himself poor position on the 9 ball and the cue ball scratched after the winning ball fell. With the crowd cheering wildly, the scratch seemed to have the makings of a pivotal turning point but Akagariyama was obviously in the zone this night, and broke and ran the next frame with some sensational shooting. In the next rack he continued his measured assault, winning a safety battle then running the table after banking in the 1 ball to go up 9-6. Alcano knew it was now or never and cleared off an errant safety to get one back. Alcano then executed a marvelous full table jump on the 1 with position of the 2, a shot that had the crowd going wild. With the run out he was now down by 1, 9-8 and the crowd started sensing the momentum swinging back to their boy. When Akagariyama missed a makeable 6 ball in the next rack, Alcano convinced them it was so, running the table to tie the match at 9. Alcano continued his fine run in the next frame when he broke and confidently started potting the remaining balls. But suddenly he was stopped in his tracks when a full table 8 ball bobbled in the jaws. As the crowd gasped in horror, Akagariyama stopped the bleeding and regained the lead, 10-9. Next Akagariyama made a gutsy full table pot on the 1, leaving perfect position on the 2 ball, and a path to a 2 shot lead. But just when it appeared he had grabbed back the momentum, Alcano pulled the same extraordinary shot in the subsequent game and moved one down at 11-10. Alcano won a safety battle in the next rack, and then ran the balls to tie the match at 11-11. The World 9-ball title was now a race to two and Alcano had the upper hand as he had won the lag and would be breaking for the hill. But with an open table, Alcano missed a very makeable 2 in the side pocket. The former two time world champion couldn’t believe what hit him and neither could the fans. Tiger West Coast Women Off to a Fast Start

The Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT)-a regional 9-ball tour sanctioned by the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA)-kicked off its 2011 Tour at California Billiards Club in Mountain View, CA on June 11/12. A field of 37 women turned out. There was a mix of 31 returning players who have been part of the West Coast Regional Women’s Tour for the last 2 years and 6 new players. A special entry was Julie Hunter, she not only ran the West Coast Women’s Regional 9-Ball Tour for nearly 20 years but who was also its top ranked player for many years. Julie, who is moving out of state soon, came to say good bye to her many friends on the tour and of course play some pool. Our tour and the tour in Southern California have agreed to reciprocal membership privileges this year so that women can compete on both tours without having to pay two memberships. Our goal is to have more women playing more pool all over the West Coast. The reciprocal membership was enticing enough for a few of their members to show up and show their skills. This was the first live streaming experience to most players and some or the Tour organizers. The

streaming was done by Doug Woo and Bernie Garma from the West Coast Pool Players. Those who viewed the stream were very enthusiastic about being able to view the matches as well as to hear the commentaries by Melinda Huang player from Southern Ca, Christy Hawley and Cony Mendoza, Board Members and participants of the Tour as well. Saturday was a long day to see which eight players would still be in the Main Event on Sunday. Our format is double elimination, race to seven on both sides. Last year’s tour winner Eleanor Callado, a sophomore on the WPBA, worked her way methodically through the field with victories over Evie Hazlett, Kirsten Karim and Jackie Karol. Helen Gaughran started with a bye then defeated Linda Miyoshi and Kacie Ragen, but was sent to the one loss side by Eleanor. Linda Carter also had a bye followed by wins over Sandi Specht and Brenda Clark. Her first loss came at the hands of Mary Rakin. Deirdre Li, who took last year off after giving birth to her first child, made an impressive return with wins over LouAnne LaFlamme and Mili Chin, then a loss to Riwan Khalil followed by a win against Evie Hazlett on the last match of Saturday night . Riwan had already defeated Theresa Teague and Shawn Modelo so her victory over Deirdre secured her place for Sunday. Meantime, a player from Southern California, Melinda Huang, was making her way through the winners’ side with victories over Jess Quinata, Deborah Cullen, and Christy Hawley. Last year’s second and third ranked players, Mary Rakin and Revelina Um, drew each other in the first round. Mary, now a WPBA rookie and the second TWCWT player to make the pro tour, defeated Revelina and cruised on with victories over Rachel Byrket and Leslie Bernardi. Revelinas’ loss to Mary apparently didn’t make her any less determined to play on Sunday. Ragen, Jackie Karol, and Christy Hawley. Sunday began with wins by Eleanor Callado over Mary Rakin; Melinda Huang over Riwan Khalil, Helen Gaughran over Linda Carter and Revelina Um over Deirdre Li. Melinda Huang’s victory over Riwan got her in the hot seat match with Eleanor. Although Melinda plays in Southern California now, years ago she played against both Eleanor and Mary in junior tournaments at the Great Entertainer in San Francisco. The player’s familiarity with Melinda showed in their respect for her game, camaraderie and knowledge of each others strengths and weaknesses. Melinda’s first loss was to first Eleanor and then to Mary. Mary reached the match with Melinda for a spot in the final with wins over Revelina Um and Helen Gaughran. The final was a match-up between Eleanor, in the hot seat, and Mary. When these two meet the result is usually a great match and Sunday was no exception. The first match went hill-hill before Mary won it (7-6), forcing a second match. But Eleanor steadied herself and took the second match (7-2) to win first place. Sunday at Sam's the five SPS qualifiers played for ca$h and bragging rights, and the results of the round-robin were : Buzz Poleson went undefeated, and took home $225. Dave Randell was 3 and 1, and his 2nd place was worth $180. Will Ford went 2 and 2 for 3rd and $135. Newcomer C.C. Cox, with 1 and 3, took 4th and $90. Frank Cooke, 0 and 4, got 5th for $45. Dave Randell posted the high run of the season way back on the first day of competition, and pocketing those 57 balls put an extra $57 in his pocket. He also had the high run of the tournament with a 38 against Buzz Poleson, but Buzz clawed his way back from a 50-15 deficit to win that one 64-50. All agreed that Will Ford was the most improved player, showing calmness and solid strategic shooting against every opponent. C.C. Cox wasn't up to his usual precise game, but did pretty well considering the Saturday night Nighthawk tournament went to the wee hours and then he had to go to work until just before the playoff. Frank, as usual, enjoyed the heck out of every game; it wasn't that long ago that he was the novice of the league, and he's made the playoffs twice now. The summer session is starting right away, and we will go to September. $70 for continuing members, $75 for new members. As he had all night, he calmly and methodically potted the balls and took the World 9-ball championship without any further drama. Afterwards, the low key new champion attributed the biggest victory of his 20 year career to his consistent training regime which, he said, led to self belief that he could ride out the inevitable rough patches and win the big prize. “I wouldn’t say I played perfect this week,” Akagariyama said through an interpreter. “I had some misses. But I had confidence. I’ve been playing well in the past few months. After the World 10-ball and the China Open I went back home and I trained hard, on my game and physical training. I had too much confidence.” Alcano was left to rue what might have been. He knew he had come close to winning his third world title but realized that at this level, you can’t expect to cash the big ticket when you make elementary mistakes. “I missed four easy shots,” a clearly dejected Alcano said afterwards. “How can I win if I miss four shots? Maybe it was the pressure.” Akagariyama collected $36,000 for the victory, while Alcano received $18,000.

FU XIAO FANG WINS CHINA OPEN GOING AWAY Beats Defending Champion Chen Siming 9-3 Moves To World Number 1.

Story and Photo by Ted Lerner (Shanghai, China)--Playing virtually mistake free 9-ball, and seemingly immune to the pressure, Fu Xiao Fang defeated fellow Chinese and defending champion Chen Siming 9-3 to capture the China Open championship Sunday afternoon in Shanghai. With her impressive victory, Fu won $30,000 and cemented her status as China’s best player. She has now won two major tournaments in the last year, including the World 9-ball championship held last September in Shenyang, China. In addition to stamping her class on the highly popular and competitive world of women’s pool in China, the victory now moves the 25 year old to the top of the world rankings. The match, played in front of several hundred people inside the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium, and an estimated nationwide television viewing audience of over ten million people watching on China’s CCTV, was expected to be much closer. But the usually unflappable Chen made some uncharacteristic mistakes, all of which cost the 17 year old phenom dearly. The two stars split the first four racks before Fu grabbed the lead and, from there, hightailed it all the way to the title. In the fifth rack Chen twice fouled, the last one leading to a nervy and difficult clear for Fu. In rack six, Fu and Chen engaged in a long safety battle, before Chen missed an open

shot on the 1. Fu then ran out for a two rack lead. Chen couldn’t seem to get comfortable while Fu just stayed steady, and Fu soon went up 5-2. Chen faced a pivotal rack in the next frame and after missing an opening on a long 1 ball, she went on to play a lock down safety that earned her the point. Little did she know, however, that it would be the last rack she would win. Fu just refused to buckle and would hold a tight reign on the proceedings the rest of the way. A terrific long pot on the six down the rail won her the next rack for a 6-3 lead. Chen fouled twice in the subsequent frame and Fu moved up by 4. Then Fu broke and ran out to go on the hill. In the final rack, Chen broke but got nothing down and left an open shot on the 1 ball. From there the balls presented a basic layout and Fu cleared to claim the title. “I played really well,” Fu told a throng of Chinese media after the match. “The pressure was big but Siming had some mistakes and maybe I have more experience than her in big events.” Chen claims $15,000 for getting runner up and will now move down to the second spot in the WPA world rankings. Lucky is fine, because you haven’t heard anything last month. I took a picture of Lucky with my cell phone. He doesn’t know about it. I know he’ll hate it. I have to figure how to get it off my phone. We have been reading “West Coast Pool Players” and Pool and Billiard Magazine on the laptop. Neither of us had shaved for a while, and Lucky was looking more like Uncle Sam by the day. It had been a fantastic time, winning a lot of money and having a blast. I had to constantly remind myself of the real reason Lucky had agreed to go on the road with me in the first place. It wasn’t just for the fun of it; it was that he needed money for his medical bills. He’s holding up pretty good. Still, I wished it could just go on and on. Traveling down 95 going through Idaho. We spent a lot of silent time just looking at the scenery. We will likely not do any gambling here on this leg of the trip. We would likely just get the skinny on some players from Roger Anderson then come back later. There used to be tons of action around Boise, Twin Falls. We kept driving till we stopped to rest from the long drive. We ate in Winnemucca a town that is really looking like a mini metropolis. The casino’s there have decent food and cheap. Surprising we hit some snow before we hit Tonopah. We rolled in Vegas admiring at all the glitter and for a place to stay. Found a cheap room to get bearings from. We had reservations at the event the next day so we stayed at budget Suites. Lucky was kicked back on the bed with his boots off, while I sat at the table going through Vegas coupon books. We were sitting in the room remembering all the matches we’d played in the past weeks. We laughed till we were silly over some, and spoke of others with the respect due to true and honorable players. Lucky brought up the 16 year old kid

from Portland. Lucky thought the kid looked ready to start play in action. I told Lucky he was going to be at the BCAPL national event. Lucky hinted about maybe backing him and help keep his head on straight. Lucky says many young pool players turn out to be jerks. “wonder if the kid has the character and the maturity it takes” Lucky’s thinking was surprising because Lucky has previously said he backs no one. Especially admitting what his father went through backing him at a young age and “business” players do. Lucky who rarely is out of line sees more out of Chris then just pool talent, He might develop into a good person but time will tell. Lucky commented about how much he enjoyed the classy Cue Sports International BCAPL Tournament especially for its nonsmoking, and I knew it was a lot more than that for him; it was one of the few places he could watch and play the sport he loved and safeguard his health, too. Vegas is action and, we were anticipating the upcoming days at Riviera and expectations at the VNEA tournament. We decided to go out see what was happening. We went to Cue Club but it had no one in action. It has been a great spot for action for years. Toby VS. Coney… but it was dead. We next went to Pool Sharks. The name was appropriate. The first thing was that the smoke was so thick rolling out the door. It seemed like death factory. We read in the newspaper Las Vegas is considering more restrictions of no smoking law. I knew Lucky would baulk at going in, because of his medical condition. He had to look in… We took a big breath and walked in. It was hard to hold it in. The first thing we saw was the doorman “Thumb”. Thumb’s been around Vegas pool a while. He was setting up action and keeping track of each game in action like a calculator. He new odds and game score. Right next to us was Ronnie Allen barking up a storm. “I’ll play

anyone here for no less then a thousand”. Scott Frost tried to get him playing. Ronnie wants to know what the spot is… they just can’t agree on any game. In the mist of barking as we stood there Ronnie turned to us and starred at Lucky speechless he stopped in his tracks just kept starring, almost hypnotized glued at his face. After a long pause 45 seconds people talking to him and he was oblivious, Ronnie’s says you look familiar. I know you”… Lucky just said likely not. Meaning Ronnie didn’t know him personally but they played a few times. Lucky told me stories. Ronnie didn’t fully recognize him. It was as time stopped for Ronnie he continued seemed to be in a trance you could visualize is brain endeavor to figure it out. It was a who’s who over in the joint. We looked over and there was the kid from the Northwest, Chris from playing cowboy Jimmy Moore’s Jr. A tough seasoned player for the kid. Lucky kept an eye on him during his play and later that night lucky said….”He’s got talent” He’s got to be still in school??”. “Look out Shane” Lucky said it in faint voice so just he and I could hear. Couldn’t help to notice Doug and Bernie from Concord, CA walk through the doors. It seemed that the rail wanted to trounce on them and get them in action. It was non stop barking. Moments later Gentile front Canada and a kid from Oklahoma got into a race to 7 one pocket for $5000.00 It didn’t take long to see that the Canadian was seriously out playing the Oklahoman. We had a soda but Lucky couldn’t stay too smoky. Next day We were getting psyched up to go find a game, when the phone rang………. Devastating news! It was one of my teammates, saying wasn’t going to be able to come Vegas and play with the team! He got hurt! , but it put a serious crimp on the rest of us at the team event. In fact, it completely knocked us down. We needed a full team of five members

to be able to compete. Lucky must have seen my face fall, because he immediately offered to play in his place, a gallant gesture on his part, but I morosely explained to him that to play he’d have had to be previously qualified How great that would have been to have him, Lucky would have been the best replacement any team could have! He’s an unselfish player, he has a positive attitude, genuinely helps people with their games, once committed wants to be there and give his best, makes sacrifices for the team. Oh, and of course he’s the best player I have ever known. What else could a team want in a team player? Well, then Lucky said we could go ahead and leave Vegas if I wanted, it wasn’t at all important for him to stay. He could sense my distress, and he wanted to make things better for me, and just forget the reason we were there in the first place. What a great person and friend to have at a time like that. But I said no thanks; we’re here to make some money, plus have some fun. I took a deep breath and psyched myself up to tell the other team members and break the bad news. I knew that would go over like a lead balloon. Early in the morning 3am the phone rang again. This time it was a friend at the action room who was scouting for action players for us and had spotted someone we thought sounded interesting. Good timing, as I clearly could use a distraction. Within a few minutes we were down the elevator and strolling into the convention area side room. The action was thick but the air was clear. Unbelievable! Someone People called HR, with “Hoosiers” written across his shirt, had just won about three grand from a Minnesota player. While he stuffed money into his pocket we heard him say to a buddy, “I’ve been waiting for this day since he beat me last year.” It looked like he had gotten his revenge pretty good. Lucky, sizing up the moment, strolled over to HR to see about some action, and HR put him onto

a buddy of his, who accepted. Lucky’s first attempt at action was a hit! How easy can it be, I thought. Lucky took off his coat and asked to borrow a cue from me, which I got from the cue storage vendor who set up lockers at the event every year They started playing on the table HR had just vacated, but by then most everyone had drifted elsewhere, not seeing anyone they thought was worth watching. And that was just the way Lucky liked it. Lucky proceeded to play down but solid and beat this guy in what I now knew as a very routine manner. The first set was for $500 and ended 9-6, the next another five bills and 9-7. I kind of thought Lucky was going to let the guy win a set but he didn’t, and he picked up $1,000. After every game the guy would go outside the door and light a smoke, take a drag, put it out, and come back. Nic fix. Didn’t work. Lucky knows it a weakness when some smokes as they are too preoccupied with it physiologically and not as occupied on pool. Lucky accepted the guy’s money graciously, and handed me my cue back. I really thought Lucky was going to play more, but said he wanted to wait a while to let things cool down. I knew he didn’t want people to think that he was there to hustle, so I checked my cue and we left. I appreciated Lucky’s class act. He didn’t want to search and badger people into games as many of the young kid hustlers do. In Vegas it scares most of the action off. Those kids and their egos are bigger than their common sense…………… More on Vegas in next issue…. I am trying to include Lucky’s picture along with these issues, but I can’t figure out how to get the picture of Lucky off my cell phone……

Redthunder Takes 8-Ball Open

By David Teller Lyle “Sonny” Redthunder, of Grand Coulee, Wash., holds off a surging Jasoné Defillipis to win the April 30 8-Ball tournament held at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery in Spokane, Wash. Redthunder’s trip to the winners bracket did not come easy. In a quarter final match, he went hill-hill with 2010 National Singles Championship qualifier Edmund Carrido of Auburn Wash. In the following match he came from behind to beat 2005 women’s U.S. Amateur Champion Phyllis Fernandez. Spokane, Wash. resident Defillipis lost a second round match against Fernandez, another Spokane-area resident. He went to work wining the next five matches in the loser’s bracket. By the latter matches Defillipis got his stroke down, going hill-hill to eliminate Jason “Buddha” McGlocklin of Spokane, Wash., going hill-hill again to beat Carrido, and then finished his trip through the bracket with a rematch against Fernandez, who he routed 4-0. Fernandez ended up in the loser’s bracket at the hands of Redthunder 4-3. In the championship match Redthunder wrestled the early matches away from Defillipis, including Defillipis missing the 8 ball, to give Redthunder a 2-0 advantage. An early 8-ball by Redthunder in the next game turned the momentum as Defillipis brought out his A-game, and eventually tied the match up at 3-3. As fast as his A-game showed up, it disappeared. Despite RedThunder surrendering the table with a bunt shot to free his tangled up object balls, Defillips’s run out was cut short when he left himself badly and gave the table back to Redthunder. Event organizers were Brian and Alicia Kvasnicka. The tournament was played by Billiard Congress of America rules on 7-foot Shelti tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. Entry fee was $35 with $5 greens fees and with $250 added. The total purse for this tournament was $1195. The race was to four on the winner’s side and to three in the loser’s bracket. When the disqualifying matches ended in fourth place and higher, the loser’s bracket matches were a race to four. For questions about upcoming tournaments, call (509) 891-8357. 3. Practice several different games. Straight pool (14.1) is easy to keep score at so you can track your progress in terms of balls per turn. At 8 ball or 9 ball note how many balls you make taking ball in hand after the break. Advanced players can try the same at one pocket -- how many balls can you score in five racks after a smash break? 4. Get lessons. Go into the lesson with specific things you hope to fix. Ask questions if you don’t understand something. Lessons with video analysis are particularly good for finding and fixing flaws in your fundamentals because you cannot see yourself. 5. Watch better players maybe on internet videos. Even better is to attend tournaments, the higher the level the better. You can pick up a lot of info hanging around where the top players are swapping shots and stories. Remember to use your notebook. 6. Read books about pool. You need information and good pool books are dense with it. Look for Byrne, Capelle, Fels, Martin, Alciatore, and others. Sift out the points that help your game -- no book is perfect. Lots of instructional videos are available with some free clips on YouTube. 7. Compete. Most players are motivated by both the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” Again, note shots that you have trouble with and amazing shots your opponents make. There’s the plan. I know some of you are laughing already. This is a great skill shot, and I would like to comment that I think George Middleditch executes the shot better than anyone when he was giving exhibitions. New National League in Colorado

The USA Pool League, a division of CueSports International (CSI), heads into its second year and is now available in Colorado. Mile high pool players will now have an opportunity to join the fun, new national league. The USAPL is unlike any other national league in the United States. Player benefits include: no player membership fees, national “Fairplay” handicap system, paid local cash and prizes, and players have an opportunity to enter the national championships directly without having to qualify through local or regional events. Additionally, USAPL members are offered a wide array of player discounts from some of the largest and most notable groups in the industry, including Mueller Recreational Products, McDermott Cues, Billiards Digest and Diamond Billiard Products. The Denver area Rocky Mountain USAPL operations will be managed by the team of Samm (Diep) Vidal and pro player Marc Vidal. Also for the first time, through the Rocky Mountain USAPL, league members will have the opportunity to be dual-sanctioned. Rocky Mountain USAPL league members will be eligible to participate in both USAPL and BCA Pool League events including both national championships. Pool Net, a subsidiary of TAP LLC, just got some enhancements for the TAP Players and TAP Operators. Once again, free of charge, just as an extra bonus for being a member and part of the TAP family. Players can view stats and handicaps by going into their league/ organization and division, standings can come up on not only desktops and laptops, but via smart phones, pads and tablets. Players can click on Games Won and sort the division by top to bottom or vice versa. Also, they can click on their team name and sort the team players by matches won. League Operators were given new communication tools to the players by division and / or to their entire league. Host Locations of TAP were not left out. Host locations can sponsor their team and can provide their logo and or team picture. Host locations can call their local operator or ask the captain to, to obtain more information. Providing Players, Operators and Host Locations more accessibility, marketing and communication tools thru Pool Net. Even better, these features are available through the Tournament Module that TAP introduced last year to all of it operators. TAP is continuing to grow, with almost 40 new licensees / organizations in the last year and a half; 3 new formats (10 Ball Team, Scotch Double and Singles) about to be released in September; and a management team that has grown to support it.
