Why the June 2016 Issue was not printed After the May Issue was completed and sent out. My beautiful wife Mary had to have Breast Cancer Surgery. All went well with the surgery so we thought. Three weeks later we were to find out that there was an infection in the breast so a second surgery had to be performer to irrigate or remove the infection. It doesn’t end there. On the first of June we were returning home from an appointment and while entering our residence, Mary collapsed and fell to the floor. We would later find out that the broken femur was caused by the Breast Cancer that had gone to the Lymph Nodes and had gone to her femur and that caused the break. The doctors didn’t operate for 6 days because of the labs. The good news is Mary is in rehab and will be coming home by the second week of July. She is improving daily and taking medicines for the cancer and to keep her labs right. The July issue is results from May and June. The August issue will be out on time and everything will return to the schedule we have previously done. If you want to find out more about what happened please go to my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DonAkerlow We would like to thank everyone who sent their wishes, prayers and comments through this extreme difficult time that our family is going through. We are living one day at a time with hope for tomorrow. Mary has been strong and resilent through all of this. She has a positive attitude and like I have said to her many times, Don’t let the Bastard win! God Bless You

American Legion doubles 8-Ball Tournament April 30-May 1, 2016 Oak Harbor, Wash.
On Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1, 2016, American Legion Post #129 in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual Partners 8-Ball Tournament. After putting forth herculean efforts to avoid conflicts and arrive at these dates for our tournament, it turned out that the Everett area leagues were having their playoffs that same weekend. Had this not happened, we would have had a full 32team tournament for the first time ever!
As it was, 23 teams (1 more than last year) showed up anyway and played for $3,360 in prize money, awarded to 6 places. The players came mainly from Island, Skagit, Whatcom Snohomish and King counties, the Lower Mainland in British Columbia, with one team coming from east of the mountains out of Yakima, WA. We played on 4 - 4x8 tables at the American Legion Hall and 4 – 4x8 tables at the All Sports Bar. The races were to be to 7 in both the no-loss and one-loss brackets, with a single race to 9 set for the championship. This field consisted of 8 Masters along with quite a few high A’s, and at least 10 of the 23 teams had a bona-fide shot at the title from the onset. So, the outcome was that most of the matches were hotly contended and often quite dramatic. The tournament ended in a two-way split for 1st and 2nd Places, by agreement of all concerned parties. The split was done 50-50 by the “Hot Seat” team of Stan Tourangeau (Vancouver,
B.C.) and Andy Randazzo (Marysville, WA) with the One-Loss winners, Chad Dumaine (Langley, B.C.) and Dexter Ambang (Vancouver, B.C.). Greg Odal (Everett, WA) and Paul Allers (Oak Harbor, WA) played exceptionally well to come in 3rd.

4th Place was tied down by Bob Duranceau and Mike Owings (both of Bellingham, WA). 5th and 6th Places were shared by the team of Leo Violette (Redmond, WA) and Cassie Francois (Lynnwood, WA) and the team of Stephen Cultee and Travis DeJong (both of Bellingham, WA). Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, to Randy Click, who ran the players’ meeting and got the tournament underway, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of whom were volunteers, for their wonderful support. And finally, our sincerest gratitude goes out to all of the players who took the time out of otherwise busy lives to come and visit our fair rural village. Let’s take a close look at how we line up our body with the shot. There are a number of very simple body alignments that can make it easier to shoot straight. If you’ve been playing a long time and are pretty good, you’re probably already doing most of them. This is worth a close look. If you’re off somewhere, making the change should make a difference for you. Look at any shot. As you stand behind the cueball, you can see “the line of the shot.” That’s the line the cueball must travel to hit the object ball or rail (or other target) precisely where you intend. How we choose that exact line is related to what we want to accomplish, our current ability level, and the various aiming adjustments we make to compensate for throw, english, squirt, etc. Choosing that line is not the issue here. The issue at hand is “What’s the best (simplest, most comfortable, most effective, most consistent, easy to remember, easy to check) way to arrange our body around the stick to produce a good, straight stroke and send the cueball down the line of the shot?” Our job as pool players is to produce a consistent, straight, fluid stroke that moves the cueball down the shot line at the right speed and with the right spin. What I’d like you to think about is making good use of your skeleton. We can simplify our job if we align our skeleton well. The better we align our skeleton, the less we have to rely on muscle and various swoops and on-the-fly stroke/aim adjustments. The point I want to drive home is that if we line up well, it’s way easier to hit what we’re aiming at, and to do it consistently and effortlessly. OK. We know where the line of the shot is. Now, imagine there is a vertical plane (a wall) running through that line. There are a bunch of body parts we’re going to align with that plane: • Bridge – This is obvious, but make sure your bridge is planted precisely, and is not pulling to one side or the other. • Grip – Again, obvious. Make sure your grip is as light as possible. The tighter you grip, the more you’ll tend to pull the stick off line during the stroke. • Stroke Arm – This is a big one. Your entire arm – forearm, elbow, upper arm, and shoulder should
The Break
OnTheBreakNews.com
be in the vertical plane. Watch out for wrists curled in or out, elbow tucked in or flying out on the hit stroke. Have someone check you out from front and back. You might be off vertical a little, and not be able to see it or feel it yourself. • Aiming Eye – Obviously, you want to be able to see directly down the line of the shot. Don’t worry about which eye is dominant – just make sure you feel you are seeing straight down the line. Check to make sure your eyes are level. Many players (especially older ones) bend lower than their flexibility allows, so their head tilts a bit. • Chin – Try to get your chin directly over the stick. How can you get your eye and your chin over the stick, and keep your eyes level? Try turning your face (just a little) toward the appropriate side. Check yourself by lowering your chin to the stick once in a while. • Back Foot – The stick should generally run over the top of your back foot. If you find you can’t do that, or can’t get your eye over the cue, your foot placement might be the culprit. With your back foot angled forward a little, try moving the front foot forward a foot or so and out to the side a foot or so from where the back foot is. This will put you in a pretty neutral position. Adjust from there until you can see down the cue, and you feel balanced and comfortable. These are guidelines. Since everyone’s body is different, not everyone will find that all of these alignments are workable. Very tall, very short, and very heavy players usually need some adjustments. A good instructor can help with the adjustments. This approach is intended to get most players arranged into an alignment that makes it easier to see down the line and send the cueball down the line. These alignments can help you stroke more consistently and with less interference from muscle and from limbs that naturally want to move in some direction other than straight. As with any change in your fundamentals, you may experience a decline in your game for a while, but if the change is a good one and you stick with it, you’ll come back stronger. Let’s get straight – and get better.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I personally like this shot a lot and like most of the shots I prefer, it can come in handy in regular pool games. If we master how to approach the tips of the pockets, a new world of solutions will open up for us. Place the Cue Ball frozen to the long-rail jaw of the corner pocket, just like shown in the diagram. Surround it with 5-6 Obstacle Balls placed in a circle that roughly joins the 2 closest diamonds to that pocket. Place your Object Ball (the Yellow Ball in the diagram) by the opposite corner pocket. On a 9-foot table with regular size pockets as well as on 7-foot Diamond tables, you can use your regular, full length cue for this shot. On most 7-foot tables or on 9-foot tables with shimmed pockets, you may need to use your jump cue. A sharp aim is the major requirement to successfully and precisely jump out of this tough situation and pocket the OB at the same time. As you will notice, this time I used the lower diagram not only to show you where to hit the CB but also how to aim into the tip of the pocket. In this shot you need to have the tip of the opposite jaw at exactly 1/3 of the CB’s diameter. Then jack up your cue by 25⁰ circa and use a 2 o’clock and 2 tips of English on the CB, with a 2.5 speed stroke. I recommend using a close bridge for more control and accuracy and, most importantly, just poking the CB with a quick snap of your wrist, as you don’t really have any room to follow-through. The CB should jump off the tip of the pocket, over the Obstacle Balls and hit the first rail just above the side pocket in order to hit two more rails and pocket the OB in the corner. By using the same principle and slightly adjusting our aim, we can send the CB just about anywhere on the table. So start practicing right away to impress your friends and beat your opponents.

Close Approach
At the start of a first lesson with a new student, the first thing I do is size up their basic ability and look for obvious problems. You might think I could just ask them, but pool players for the most part seem unable to see their own weaknesses. In that regard, they’re pretty much like all people. Anyway, a recent student was doing fairly well with the preliminary shots until we got to the follow shot in the diagram. The goal is to pocket the 1 ball and follow down to the end rail, leaving the cue ball within a diamond of the cushion. When I watched from pocket P with my head just above the pocket, everything looked pretty good: straight cue movement, head over the shot and still, and a nice even swing, very little body movement. But the student was having a real hard time getting the cue ball down to the cushion. Even with a firm stroke the cue ball would sometimes drift forward only a foot or two. This lack of cue ball action with good stick speed can only happen on this shot if the tip is not hitting the cue ball high enough. To see how high the student was hitting the ball, I moved to S to see the height of the tip on the cue ball. The problem was visible immediately -- more accurately, I couldn’t see where the student was going to hit the ball and neither could he. When the student was done with his warm-up strokes and about to take the final back stroke and power stroke, he stopped the cue at the point shown in the diagram, back from the ball maybe three or four inches. In fact the warm-ups never got any closer than that. From that far back, the spot the tip is going to hit on the cue ball is just guess work. In order to achieve accuracy in position play, you need to control within the thickness of a dime where the tip hits the ball because that is going to determine how much spin you put on the cue ball. The easy way to see where the tip will hit the ball is to bring the tip up to the ball at the end of your warm-ups and stop it within a quarter-inch of the ball. Then if you bring the stick straight back and straight through on the power stroke the tip ends where it began and you have excellent control over your spin. A second benefit is that the final stroke is a lot more like your warm-up strokes if you don’t have to add an extra three inches to the motion. Here’s a practice for you. See if you can shoot the shot as shown and follow to within six inches of the end rail five times in a row. Notice that the cue ball is a little less than a diamond from the object ball. Try the draw shot as well to leave the cue ball within

a diamond of the other end rail. If you have trouble with consistency on these shots, you may have an approach problem. Have a friend stand at S and tell you when you are in “ready” position how many quarter inches (or tip thicknesses) the tip is from the cue ball. Work to get that down to no more than a half-inch of clearance. If you have no friends handy, and your depth perception is lacking as well, get a small mirror and stand it on it’s side at M to let you see from the side while you’re in position. I found a small mirror with a protective plastic rim in the cosmetics department that is perfect for the job. When it comes to accurate English, you want to be close to your work.

TOURNAMENT PREPARATION Good preparation is about having a consistent warm-up routine for your body and mind before match play. Be sure to follow the steps below to prepare yourself for success:
1.

He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Fuel for Battle: The first thing that you need to consider is eating a healthy meal. You also need to drink plenty of water—it has been proven that being dehydrated lowers your ability to perform well, and if you’re thirsty, it’s time to give your body what it’s asking for. It is also important to eat the right amount of food. You don’t want to be hungry, but you don’t want to be too full either. You should eat foods that are healthy for you. Snacks like apples, bananas, or nuts will help maintain positive energy levels. 2. Warm-Up Mentally: As you are driving to the poolroom, play through a match in your mind and imagine running out. Don’t start thinking about the score; just imagine what it feels like to play a positive game of pool where you put a good stroke on each and every shot. The idea is to “ingrain” positive images into your subconscious, which will give you a better chance of making those images into a reality when you play. 3. Follow a Consistent Routine: Watch any of the top professionals and their pre-match routines. They always prepare for success and you need to as well. I strongly recommend following the same plan over and over. If it takes you fifteen minutes to warm up, be sure to get to the table early so that you can get yourself in stroke. 4. Warm-Up with Easy Shots: Simple shots struck with a medium speed are a great way to start coordinating both your physical and mental abilities. Always remember to visualize what you plan to do and try to start developing a feel for your surroundings. One of your primary goals during warm-up should be to develop positive feelings. 5. Develop a “Feel” for the Table: As you warm up with simple shots, try to play as many different shots as you can from a variety of cut angles. This will help you develop positive feelings as you start to get your creative
www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews
juices flowing. This will also help you get familiar with the speed of the table. 6. No Mechanical Thoughts: Resist your temptation to start thinking about stroke mechanics. You need to start playing, and that involves visualizing shots and trusting in your stroke. Honestly, there’s no correlation between your warm-up and how you are going to finish. 7. other thing that you need to do is practice the pre-shot routine that you’ll be using before each and every shot. This sets a solid foundation for a high-quality performance and is the only thing you can completely control while you are at the table. A good pre-shot routine also gives you something to focus on other than external distractions. 8. Have a Positive Attitude: This component requires for you to have fun and enjoy yourself. Tell yourself that you’re going to love playing no matter how well you play. After all, pool isn’t your profession. If you don’t have to win in order to pay your bills, there really shouldn’t be any pressure on how you perform. 9. No Expectations: No matter how well you might have been playing, you must understand that sometimes it’s just not meant to be. The balls are loyal to no one and sometimes they just won’t let you win. 10. Focus on the Process: The fact that you have no idea what’s going to happen during your next match is actually pretty exciting. The only real thing within your control is the process of putting a good stroke on the cue ball time after time. Following your pre-shot routine should be one of your primary goals for match play. Following a strict process will distract you from things that could negatively impact your performance.

Buffalo Billiards, located in the heart of downtown Petaluma, opened their doors the weekend of June 11-12, 2016 to thirty participants, this being Lee Simon’s third year of sponsorship for the Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour. With 27 participants in the previous two years, this stop added two new players to the tour in addition to our regular competitors. In addition to the assortment of pool tables, the pool hall also offers ping pong, dart boards, shuffle board, kids’ activities, and a vamped-up menu featuring local ingredients. Buffalo holds weekly in-house leagues and have also started participating in large-scope tournaments like the Mezz West State Tour. Last year’s finalists, Eleanor Callado and Revelina Um, were not present for this stop, which opened the doors to many of the other returning players who are looking to place in the top 8. Traditionally, TWCWT likes to recognize players who have made significant strides as competitors throughout the season. With a top 8 finish last year, Kendra Fuller found herself in a top 4 spot this time around. Playing on the tour since 2012, she has played primarily on bar tables for the last 20 years. She participates in the East Bay women’s league, Diablo Valley Pool League, and Family Billiards in San Francisco. She also enjoys competing in a few tournaments sporadically. She aspires to become the master of her own mind, as she feels many times her head game is what prevents her from winning more matches. This was the first time in the history of the tour where we used a handicap system based on survey results at the end of the 2015 season. Our players had an overwhelming desire to use a handicapping system to give players that don’t consistently cash in a “better chance” to win or “stay in the match.” The pool

of competitors is broken down into 3 rating categories: a rating of 5, 6, or 7. Depending on each player’s overall finish, the amount of stops they participated in, and their finishes at each stop, most players were given a score. Top ~15% of the field have been rated as a 7, middle ~40% are at a 6, and the rest are a 5 [“established” ratings are for players who have participated in at least 4 stops last year]. New players entered at a 6 and were adjusted depending on feedback and to the board’s discretion. The match spot would depend on the point difference between the two players. So, a player with a rating of 7 would spot 2 games to a player rated at 5 in a race to 7. As games got going, a few of the regular top players started tearing through the brackets. Denise Domingo returned to day 2 on the winner’s side, defeating Theresa Teague, Elizabeth Jeung, and Emilyn Callado. Also on the winner’s side was Minnie Tayaotao, with wins over Lori Burgesen, Tammy Moreda, and Kendra Fuller to set up a match against Denise Domingo. In the next bracket, Janna Sue Nelson had wins against Kim Cuarisma, Cony Mendoza, and Kirsten Karim, while Sher Ahola won against Sondra Faith, Lindsey Dorn, and Leslie Bernardi. At the end of Saturday, the 2 winner’s side match-ups were: Denise Domingo vs. Minnie Tayaotao and Sher Ahola vs. Janna Sue Nelson Working on the one-loss side, Kendra Fuller won a match against Lindsey Dorn (a regular top-8 finisher) to return on Sunday guaranteed in the top 8. evening before. Leslie Bernardi won her match against L.A. visitor Gigi Callejas to wait for the winner of Darnell Domingo and Kirsten Karim. Matches for Sunday morning on the one-loss side were: Kendra Fuller vs. Emilyn Callado and Leslie Bernardi vs. Kirsten Karim The sole survivor of the one-loss side would be Leslie Bernardi, playing Minnie on day 2, who defeated Sher in her previous hot seat match. With the final match honoring a true double elimination format, Leslie would need to win two matches to emerge victorious in the tournament. Leslie took the first set 7-6, after being down 5-6, however, Minnie quickly snatched the next set 5-1.

In addition to her professional media experience, Masy is also an accomplished player who has participated in the sport at all levels, from league play to women’s professional tour events. She is passionate about pool and will use her enthusiasm and professional skills to help the BCA Pool League (BCAPL) and USA Pool League (USAPL) grow by attracting new players of all skill levels. “I am looking forward to the challenge of this new role and to introducing our sport to new players, whom I hope will be as enthralled and engaged with the sport as I am,” Coffman said. In her new role, Coffman will reach out to league operators as a resource to help them grow and thrive, by finding opportunities to attract new players and retaining current ones. She will also improve communication and support between the national organization and state and regional league organizations. Coffman plans to help league operators and players understand FargoRate and how it is being incorporated into leagues and tournaments to create more equitable tournament divisions throughout all levels of play. “FargoRate finally gives the billiards industry an accurate gauge for determining a player’s true skill level and will help ensure that players at regional and national tournaments are pitted against those of comparable skill — providing a better experience for everyone,” Coffman said. In addition, Coffman will take charge of the CSI’s social media, email marketing, advertising and promotions. Coffman, previously of Richland, Wash. will be based out of CSI’s Henderson, Nev. headquarters. She will start in her new position in mid-June.

4th Annual Energy Capital 9-Ball Classic The 4th Annual Energy Capital 9-ball Classic was played April 29-May 1st! It was the biggest turnout we’ve had so far. 120 players in 3 divisions – open, B, and women’s. Open had 54A players, 19 AAA, 20 AA, 20 A. Don’t Wait Too Long! With four months to go, you would think that you have plenty of time to make arrangements for this year’s U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. Well, don’t think that way!
Last year, the tournament field was filled at 128 with a long waiting list. Last year, the choice seating was sold out. Last year, on some days, the hotel room reservations were completely booked. Does that tell you anything? This year’s event, in honor of the late Barry Behrman, may be the best U.S. Open ever. Barry gave the reins to Pat Fleming of Accu-Stats and his job will be to live up to Barry Behrman’s dream. Last year, 128 players competed, many from around the world. Because of a long waiting list, the field has been increased to 160 players. The $75,000 in added money qualifies it as a “Tier 2” event sanctioned by the WPA. Over $200,000 in prize money is at stake with $50,000 going to the winner while paying down to 48th place which will pay $2,000. From October 16-22, 2016, The Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel will be bending over backwards to accommodate us. They loved the U.S. Open and want us back for years to come. This wonderful host site is offering us extremely low room rates, especially for being in the heart of Norfolk. The hotel staff, as well as the City of Norfolk, will do everything they can to make you feel welcome. For tickets to the annual BCA Hall of Fame Banquet at the Sheraton, call Mike Panozzo at 312-341-1110 ext 2004. Go to www.usopen9ballchampionships.com
for key information with regards to player registration, VIP seating, and hotel reservations.
Master Cue Maker, Mr. Paul Huebler (Huebler Cues), passed away shortly after 1p yesterday in Linn, Missouri. Paul’s passing comes just a few days after our Annual World Championships and just a week before our Annual Int’l Junior Championships. Paul was such a huge part of these two events for many years and was adored and admired by every VNEA player who was lucky enough to make his acquaintance. Paul was 89 years old. Services were June 13th at 10a held at the St. George Catholic Church at 613 Main Street in Linn, Missouri 65061. No known Memorials have been established. Randy Baker “Wins Jim’s Money” May Tournament at The Cue Ball In the match for the point, Rocky Berquist and Randy Baker faced off in an 8-4 race. Baker prevailed 8 -2. Berquist missed the 8 ball on his final shot of the match, crumpling to his knees in defeat, as Baker converted. Meanwhile Sheldon Lebow, the “Cue Tech Master”, faced off with Dave “Obi Wan Casanova”, Canova in a 5 – 4 race. After being down 3 – 1, Berquist stormed back to take the match 4-3. Berquist made a tough out from the 8 sealing the win.
The May issue of the Cue Ball’s “Win Jim’s Money” attracted 34 players to the field. It was a perfect day for a Pool Tournament, as the rain started early. $550 was the prize pool, with $215 going to the winner. 2nd would claim $130 for their disap pointment and 3rd would go home crying with their $80 prize. The Cue Ball paid out to the 8th place spot, $10.
Berquist’s prize was a rematch with Randy Baker for a shot at 1st place. The race was 8-4, not allowing much room for error, Karma or luck. Different match, same result. Baker won the match 8-2. (see above) Berquist says he had his chances but couldn’t convert. Randy Baker, in his usual machine like manner, seized the prize. The next “Win Jim’s Money” 9-Ball handicapped tournament is scheduled for Saturday June 11, 2016. Player registration opens at 9:30am and play starts @ 10:00. BE HERE!
New Winner Emerges in June’s “Win Jim’s Money” The June edition of The Cue Ball’s “Win Jim’s Money” 9-Ball Handicapped Tournament was held on Saturday, June 11, 2016. A field of 32 players showed up to compete for their portion of the $520 purse. In the fight for the 4th place prize of $ 80, Adam Lebow faced a titan, Randy Baker in a 9 – 2 race. Baker was faced with the challenge of not making any mistakes against a much lower ranked player who had been hot all day, playing above his skill level. Adam Lebow, all of 13 years old was facing a serious case of nerves, as we can all empathize with. Lebow, as stated, is the youngest, highest placing player The Cue Ball has seen in quite some time. Baker, the heartless competitor he is, didn’t open the door for Lebow an inch. Lebow played some awesome shots, but fell to the new overall points leader, 9 zip.
against an opponent who had won 17 straight games. Bakers streak ended, and ended poorly. Kjelde tore Baker up, reversing the tables. In a 7 – 3 race, Baker was smoked, 3 zip. He took 2nd place and his $120 prize. Jack Kjelde had won the tournament in a dominating fashion and is enjoying his 1st place prize of $200. The next “Win Jim’s Money’ Tournament is scheduled for July 9th 2016. You can’t win if you don’t play. Be HERE!
Baker then faced off against a relative newcomer to the tournament, Daniel Majid. The race was 7 – 3. Baker had reeled off 9 straight against Lebow, and continued his streak against Majid. Majid was never able to mount a challenge, and succumbed to Baker 7 zip. Majid, for his efforts, took 3rd place and $80. Nice showing for the new guy. In the match for 1st place, Baker face Jack Kjelde, who had ripped through his bracket undefeated. Kjelde had played well all day, but faced off
