Boise Pool Community Rallies ‘Round

L to R Winners Brent Revai, Ralph Trenga, Joan Thomson (beneficiary), and 2nd Place CarlaJean Beers, Todd Fielitz

Billiards of Idaho Pool League players, Bruce and Joan Thomson of Homedale, Idaho recently lost their pool cave to a fire. It was a complete loss. Their “Hole in the Wall”, as they affectionately called it, was where they gathered often with friends & family to play pool, share stories and just hang out. Jeff & CarlaJean Beers, owners of Billiards of Idaho called upon the Billiards of Idaho Pool League community to come together to help the Thomsons. We held a Blind Draw Scotch Doubles Pool Tournament and included a raffle and silent auction. We had 24 players in tournament and many others who came to bid on the silent auction items.

Bruce and Joan Thomson

Bruce and Joan would like to thank everyone that came together to help them. They are, “grateful and humbled by the thoughtfulness and kindness of everyone.” Collectively we raised $837 for the Thomson family! We would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their contributions: Q’s Billiards, Larry Hixon at Larry Miller Honda of Boise, 5 Guys Burgers and Fries, Red Pavilion Chinese Restaurant, Stefano Pelinga, Ron Hatfield, Dan Tibbitts, Bill Spittler, Mary Lou Milstead, Megan Morgan, Butch Garus, Scott Privette and many more.

Golden Fleece June One Pocket

The house (Golden Fleece in Seattle, WA) was packed at 9:30am on June 17, 2017 as players took advantage of the warm-up period before the players meeting and draw at 9:45am. Play started promptly at 10am with 19 players wanting to sign up for a field limited to 16. There were many new faces at various skill levels all packing their hardware and ready to compete in a format that gives everyone a chance to get in the money. In the top half of the field one of the new-comers, Cleo, was steadily sending players to the one-loss side. In the bottom half of the field Jose was doing the same, and eventually all the 9’s and 10’s were in the one-loss side. This set up the hot-seat match where Cleo and Jose faced off, with Jose giving up 8/7 in a race to two. It was a great match, but ultimately was Jose’s day for the “W.” On the one-loss side Preacher Ronn inched thru the bracket, giving up spots as high as 10/6 – 11/6. Finally, it came down to Cleo and the Preacher, but only one could go back to face the hot-seat champion and that would be the Preacher. As the winner of the winner’s bracket, Jose had the first break with Preacher giving up 9/7 – 10/7. Jose came out of the gate with a very unorthodox break, sticking the cue ball to the head ball and putting the Preacher in a jam right off the bat. Jose took the first game; Preacher took the second. Jose took the 3rd with Preacher taking the 4th. At this point it was hill/hill, and Jose’s break. Jose made an early mistake owing one, and the Preacher took advantage running a few balls and putting Jose back in a jam. Kicking to get out Jose missed the hit now owed two and Preacher ran a few more ending by putting Jose back in a hurt-locker. After the 3rd foul the match was pretty much decided and a couple of innings later Preacher finished Jose off.

Diamond Billiards in Modesto, CA held its Annual $500 Added 8-Ball Tournament on June 10, 2017. We opened the doors at 10am for free practice and by the Noon start time the tournament was under way with 49 players signed up. One by one players were eliminated with Tommy Too Good going undefeated on the winner side after beating George Michael for the Hot Seat. Meanwhile on the One Loss Side, player after player was sent home leaving Doug W. and Dirk going head to head to see who would make the Semi Finals. Doug took the match which put him up against George. Semi Finals started late in the evening with George and Doug both shooting for the win. Doug held his own defeating George and moving on to the finals. The players decided to finish out the tournament and the Finals were on. The battle for the win began with Tommy vs. Doug. As the few remaining spectators watched, Tommy took the win and remained undefeated! We would like to thank all 49 players for coming out and shooting to win. The tournament was successful due to the players and spectators alike and we hope to see you all again next time.

The Psychology of Pool DR. CHRIS STANKOVICH Dr. Chris Stankovich, known as “The Sports Doc,” is a national expert in the field of sport & performance psychology and has been featured on ESPN for his work with elite athletes. His #1 best selling pool video “Mind of Steel: Mental Toughness for Pool Success” has been used by thousands of players to improve focus, increase confidence, and eliminate anxiety. DO SUPERSTITIONS HELP IN POOL? Does playing pool wearing your lucky shoes, keeping 4-leaf clover in your pool case, or eating a specific meal the day of big tournaments really make a difference with the way you play? The answer to this question might actually surprise you when I say YES (but only if you believe those things “work”). Most people have some kind of superstition they use to manage their way through life. In most cases the thought, ritual, or behavior is something quirky or fun, and while it may not have any magical power it does provide the believer a sense of comfort. In science we call it the placebo effect when something with no value (i.e. a 4-leaf clover) appears to have had a positive effect (the clover appears to have helped you to play your best). Why superstitions “work” Superstitions “work” in the sense that they provide the believer with confidence that he or she is doing everything within reason to be successful. When we feel comfortable with our approach, our nerves settle, our focus becomes more refined, and inevitably all of this combines to allow for our minds and bodies to work in perfect synchrony and make shots on the pool table. As you can see from this example, the superstition does not have any power by itself, but often what superstitions do is allow us to take our mind away from negative distractions (i.e. the person we are playing, or the crowd that is watching) and instead refocus on the table and making the shots we know how to make. If this sounds simple it is, but it is also often the difference between wins and losses, and between good and great.

MIND OF STEEL MENTAL TOUGHNESS FOR POOL SUCCESS Eliminate nerves & anxiety, beat pressure, and DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!! Streaming in HD on any device 24/7/365

Dr. Chris Stankovich DRSTANKOVICH.CINEVEE.COM OnTheBreakNews.com

When superstitions don’t work As I previously mentioned superstitions are not magic, and when they do “work” it is anchored in the belief that the superstation works, not the superstition itself. What this also means is that if you don’t believe in something, it’s likely you won’t see any difference with your game, either. Try instead to think of superstitions as little “helpers,” and not magic. Bottom line Every pool player needs to do what makes them feel the best they can feel, and if this includes quirky superstitions that don’t negatively effect the player then keep doing what works! Superstitions can help ease anxiety, increase confidence, improve focus, and sometimes even get in the head of the competition – all things that help players WIN MORE GAMES! But remember, for superstitions to “work,” you have to believe in them; otherwise you’re probably wasting your time keeping that 4-leaf clover in your pool case. I would like to hear from you. STROKIN’ VS. POKIN’

July 2017

Ask anybody. Stroking is better than poking. Now ask them why. “Um, uh, it looks better.” Yes, it certainly does look better, but let’s peer a little more deeply. This is a big deal. The jump from poking to stroking is huge. But if you’re ever going to be an excellent player, you’re gonna have to do it. A nice stroke is highly desirable. With it come better touch and speed control, and more consistent action. It feels good, and it looks good. So what are we talking about? We’ve all seen beautiful strokes, and somehow knew they were beautiful, even though they may have looked quite different from each other. We’ve heard comments like “he’s got mercury in his arm,” or “that’s a sweet stroke.” What are we seeing there? I think we’re seeing a silky, fluid, ultra-smooth swinging motion. It’s a motion that tells us that cue is pretty much directly connected to the player’s intent – his mental image of what he wants the ball to do. It’s a stroke that has been honed through hundreds or thousands of hours and is now smooth, simple, effortless, and accurate. Pioneering instructor Jerry Briesath says a stroke is “a beautiful throwing motion.” I like that image. What are some of the qualities of a stroke? The stick swings without effort, very smoothly, with no jerky transitions, no hitches, no muscle. It feels like you’re ever so smoothly throwing the stick through the ball. The right feeling is to feel like you’re accelerating through the ball. You’re releasing the stick, not pushing it or pulling it back. When you’re not ready to shoot – not focused, don’t like your plan, not confident you’re aiming accurately – your stroke will suffer. A great stroke is without doubt. What characterizes a poke? Pokes are jerky. The stick looks like it’s being muscled around. Often, an overly tight grip will lead to pokes. If your hand is clenched, your forearm is also involved, along with some of your upper arm musculature. This “extra” muscle use interferes with the fluidity of the swing, making it look more like a jab. Where a stroke can be said to accelerate smoothly forward, a poke decelerates, actually slowing down on the way to the ball. Here’s where you can see it. A lag speed stroke might naturally yield a follow-through of about 4” or 5” past the cueball. This is because the player doesn’t try to stop the stick. He throws it and commits.

The Break

OnTheBreakNews.com

Meanwhile, a lag speed poke may follow through only halfway into the cueball, or not at all. This is because the player is slowing the stick. Watch closely and see how players don’t follow through, or just follow a little. To do that, they had to be pulling back against the forward motion of the stick. Instead of just allowing the bicep to pull the stick forward in the swing, the tricep is working too. They’re fighting each other. It’s pretty hard to have the kind of touch and consistency you need as a player when you’re moving in two opposing directions at once. Here are a few things to try in your quest for a better stroke: • Check your follow-through. The idea is to allow the natural amount of follow-through for the speed of the stick. Poking comes from interfering with the simple, natural forward swing. Throw the stick and let it go as far as it goes. Don’t pull back. Forward only. • No clenching. Any muscle tension you’re holding, especially in the shooting arm, interferes with the free flow of the stroke. Try to find your clenches and let them go. One way to do that is to clench a muscle hard and try to stroke. Let it go. Soften. Now, let it go some more. Keep stroking and observe what happens as you soften. • Increase touch. Most good players heft the butt of the cue as part of their pre-shot routine. They are trying to get the feel of the cue, connecting with its weight, shape, and texture. For most players, a light grip provides better touch, a better joining of cue and player. • Slow backswing. Fast, jerky backswings often lead to poking. The purpose of the backswing is simply to get the stick back to the hit position without disturbing your aim. Slow and smooth is what you want. • Melt your triceps. On the hit stroke, try an image of the tricep giving up more and more completely as the stick moves forward through the swing. • No hitting. Pokers hit the cueball. They hit it and stop there. Strokers toss the stick confidently through the ball, like it’s not even there. Be a stroker and play with more ease, beauty, and consistency. Show the flow.

ONE MORE GREAT ESCAPE STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

A

B

This month’s shot is another “useful trick shot”. More so if you are playing against a good safety player. It was shown to me about 10 years ago by my good friend and toughest opponent Mike Massey. Let’s suppose we are playing 9-Ball. Place the CB frozen to the long rail at 1.5-diamond distance from pocket A and the yellow 1-ball right by the C-Pocket. Then let’s block the CB from any direction by placing a ball (the blue one) on the long rail at about one-ball distance from the tip of pocket A, two balls (the pink and the red) frozen to it and perpendicular to the long rail, another ball (the green one) right behind it at about ½ ball distance from the same long rail and let’s finish the set up by placing 3 balls frozen and perpendicular to the short rail, with their left edge even with the first diamond from pocket A. I am right handed so I will lean over the table as much as I can by putting my right leg on top of it. You can obviously do the opposite and use the mirror image of this shot if you are left handed. Elevate your cue by about 45°. Unless you are very tall, your forearm will now be parallel to the table’s surface. Aim slightly past the first diamond on the long rail (red line). Shoot into the rail and use a 10:30, 2-tip, 2.5 speed stroke. The CB will gain a generous amount F of left spin so once it hits the short rail, it will bounce off it and curve enough to likely clear the red ball and head towards the yellow OB laying by pocket C. Speed or, if you wish, power, affects this shot so you will need to find the right amount of force to use: if you shoot too soft, the CB will curve too quickly and hit the red and 45° pink balls whereas if you shoot too hard, the English E on the CB won’t have enough time to grab and it will hit the 3 balls on the short rail. A great and very useful shot for sure!

July 2017

The first big pro tournament I attended offered a lot of lessons. One of them was an introduction to Shot 1. Hall of Famer Irving Crane was faced with Shot 1 (after a break shot at straight pool) and I was wondering what he was going to do. This is a shot that I hated because it was really hard for me to keep enough draw on the cue ball to avoid scratching if I hit the 1 ball straight and there was too much distance to try to cheat the pocket. The Deacon didn’t even slow down to think about it, he just rolled the 1 ball in by hitting rail first with an easy stroke and got easy position on a ball on the foot cushion. There are systems for aiming shots like this, but for now let’s ignore those and just get a feeling for playing the shot. So that you can repeat a shot precisely, I’d like you to get two practice aids. First, a bunch of paper reinforcement donuts will let you put the object ball back in exactly the same place a few times so you can zero in on the shot. Second, a round paper target the same size as a pool ball will let you try shooting along the same line multiple times. It’s shown up on the rail by the corner pocket. It probably won’t be 2 necessary to position the cue ball precisely, so just noting about which diamond you are shooting from will be sufficient. In the diagram, Shot 1 is being shot from 3/4ths of a diamond from the corner pocket measured along the head rail. Ready? Start with Shot 1 but with the 1 ball only half an inch off the cushion. I think the easiest way to shoot it is with a low-speed rolling cue ball and no side spin. You probably won’t need the round target. Practice the shot just until you make it three in a row. Then move the ball to an inch and then two inches from the cushion. For these shots, the target may help. Place it so that you are shooting the cue ball straight at the target. Once you see the right distance up the rail to hit, go for your three in a row without the target. Once you have the simple shot down, it’s time to move on to doing more with the cue ball. Shot 2 shows some of the possibilities. If you happen to have left yourself straight in on the 2 ball, they give you a way to get the cue ball across the table. The first to try is the follow shot, similar to Shot 1, but start to crank up the speed to get more movement on the cue ball. Running english, in this case right side, will also help move the cue ball. With the changes in speed and spin, the aim is going to change some as well. You may want to use the round target as a guide 3 even when the 2 ball is close to the cushion. Increase the speed and spin and see how far you can get the cue ball to go. Can you get it back to the kitchen? The

next thing to try is to get the cue ball to go straight across the table after hitting the 2 ball by using draw. What is the slowest you can hit the shot and keep a little draw on the cue ball? Finally for Shot 2, use more draw and pull the cue ball back after hitting the 2 ball. Right english will help get the cue ball back to the kitchen after hitting the right side rail. These shots at higher speed are very challenging with the object ball more than a fraction of inch off the rail, but try a few to get a little experience with the more difficult positions. Shot 3 is an advanced one-pocket shot that’s worth a few minutes practice. You have pocket A. The simple bank has a kiss (or maybe it is blocked in a game situation), so the kickbank is the best option. The donut and target will definitely help with this shot.

He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

As a Master Instructor, I work with numerous students each year. One of the most popular topics in pool of late has been the discussion of how professional players aim. Many pros use the old ghost ball system, or aim through the aid of their memory from of thousands of shots they have struck during their careers. However, the majority of professionals prefer to use some type of concrete aiming system. Aiming systems range from the very simple to the complex (Center to Edge). Personally, I find that most students really don’t want to learn an aiming system that is overly complicated, and I also find that the simplest systems (like ghost ball) just aren’t all that effective. I have found that the best aiming system for most players is one that is both simple and effective. The system that I use is both easy to learn and accurate. I like to call this system, “Point and Aim.” This system is very similar to the one previously taught by Bert Kinister and Shane Van Boening. Parts of the technique I am referring to were previously referred to as “The Edge of the Shaft” system. As you can see here, the first shot is straight in. For this shot you would use the center of your shaft through the center of the cue ball and draw an imaginary line into the base of the object ball. You can also use the center of your shaft to calculate slight variances up to around 14 degrees. Simply point the center of your cue into the point on the object ball that is on the line into the pocket. Once you reach 15 degrees, the system changes slightly. For a 15 degree cut to your right, you should aim the right edge of your shaft into the imaginary line on the ball that points into the center of the pocket

(center of the white line as shown). For a 30-degree cut to your right, you

OnTheBreakNews.com

www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews

should aim the right edge of your shaft into approximately 25 percent of the left side of the object ball. For a 45-degree cut to your right, you should aim the right edge of your shaft into the left edge of the object ball. In essence, the idea is to use the right edge of your shaft if you are cutting a ball to the right and use the left edge of the shaft when you are cutting balls to your left. The problem with the system is that once you go beyond 45 degrees there is nowhere on the object ball that you can point your shaft to. Anything beyond a 45-degree cut requires a player to use a slightly different strategy. In other words, for really thin cut shots to the right, you should aim using the right edge of the cue ball into the left edge of the object ball and vice versa for thin cuts to your left. I believe this collection of aiming strategies will come in handy for you during match play. The strategies will serve as a solid foundation for aiming and will create a direct connection between your cue stick, the cue ball, and the object ball. With some practice, the “Point and Aim” system above will give you a solid framework that will help you pocket balls more consistently. Remember, practice makes perfect. In the words of Annie Oakley, “Aim at the high mark and you will hit it. Not the first time, not the second, and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting. Finally you’ll hit!”

Pacific ACS th 13 Annual Do you want to have a good time, drink some beer, play some pool, meet new friends and say hello to some old friends you have not seen in a while? Then the Pacific American Cue Sports Regional Tournament is the place to be. Everyone who attended commented on what a great time they had and the competition was pretty good also. Our individual dual sanctioning program increased this year and looks to increase even more next year. However, we will be lowering the cost for individual dual sanctioning to $20 due to the fact that the individual dual sanctioning will not qualify players for the national tournament in Las Vegas. Because Pacific American Cue Sports is a players’ league, we do listen to the players and gladly accept any and all questions and suggestions that the players have regarding the tournament. However, we did have a player suggest that the races be increased, so we did, and then the player came back and said that they should have been more careful about what they asked for. They did not mean that increasing the races would include 8-ball because that was a little much. Our staff loves to talk to the players and here their comments and suggestions and I hope that we can continue to make the players feel comfortable enough to talk to the staff. This is after all, the players’ tournament, and the staff only administers it.

SVB Wins Pac-West Invitational by: Carissa Biggs Portland, OR – Marc Adamus, Carissa Biggs, and Valerie Schwartz teamed up to make cue sports history in the Pacific NW with the $10,000 added Pac-West Invitational. With the additional prestige of being a Mosconi Team USA points earning stop, the event attracted contenders like Skyler Woodward, Dennis Hatch, and Hunter Lombardo. Top local and regional players converged to put their skills to the test and try to send out-of-towners home! Russell Cearley from the Eugene/ Springfield area caught a nice branch and made his way through the winner’s bracket to face Ernesto Dominguez in the quarterfinals of the winner’s side. Russell had been sold for only $25 in the auction, but he kicked himself hard for not buying his half! Local Sam’s player Scott Pahl also made a run for it, falling to Russell in the match before, and then Ramil Gallego on the one-loss side. Chris Byers had beat Hunter Lombardo on the backside, but fell to Oscar Dominguez one match before the money. Darin Walding however, made his way through the backside of the bracket, and didn’t fall until he hit Skyler Woodward in the 9th place position! There were definitely enough professional players to go around, Paul Marquez faced Corey Deuel right away and put up a great fight. Steve Lingelbach took his 2 losses to Antonio Lining and Dennis Hatch. Bob Zack faced an absolute barrage of champions: Mika Immonen, Dan Louie, Paul Potier, and Ramil Gallego where he was stopped in his tracks. Shane VanBoening cruised smoothly through the winner’s bracket defeating Ernesto Dominguez in the hot seat match. Ramil Gallego worked hard and gained momentum on the backside earning his place in the finals against Shane. Both competitors treated spectators to quite an exhibition of talent driving the score to an 8-8 thriller in the first set of the true double elimination tournament. Shane captured the final game and earned the title in addition to a cool $6,000 first place prize. Simonis Cloth, Aramith Balls, Coors, and Miller Highlife all provided support to the event, and we sincerely appreciate their assistance. Many people helped with all kinds of different aspects of the event – Paul Marquez, Liz Cole, and Kirsten Hermanson-Fery all helped with the auction. Pat Mowdy, Steve Schneringer, and David Scarth all assisted by providing their referee skills. John Evans, Shirley Morgan, and Maddy Mowdy helped with crowd control. Steve Lingelbach, Darin Walding,

TWCWT

ELEANOR CALLADO WINS AT BUFFALO BILLIARDS The West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) had their first official stop on the weekend of June 17-18, 2017 at Buffalo Billiards in Petaluma, CA. This pool hall has ping pong tables, dart boards, shuffleboard, pinball, and a combination of different types and sizes of tables. Mr. Lee Simon and his staff opened their doors promptly at 10:30 AM to allow plenty of warm up time for the women competitors and for the Board members to set-up score cards and the live stream. This is the fifth year that Mr. Lee Simon has hosted a TWCWT tour stop, where he also shared that he is now a Diamond representative and will soon add a handful of additional bar tables and continue to run bar table events. For this Stop, 23 women showed up to participate. This being the first stop, majority of the players were regulars of the TWCWT. This group was certainly a different group from the ones that participated at the Kick-off event in Sacramento last month, and, one thing is for sure, there is always a different mix of players and skill levels represented at each stop. Still, some players are not able to make it to every single stop, but a lot of our girls attend when they can. The Domingo sisters were present this time and their friendly demeanor plus their competitive edge was felt by all. Denise and Darnell continue to be strong forces on the Tour, whether they only play 1 stop in a season or every single stop. They were both instrumental a few years ago doing the live stream for the tour. They both made it to top 8! Another player who participated a few years ago was Masae Aitoku. She plays mainly out of Family Billiards in San Francisco. She is very active in the leagues and tournaments and is a top finisher in several events. This was her first event since the handicap started so she came in with 6 rating. By default, any new player that comes into the tour will start as a 6 and then, after the first round (depending on her performance), the Tournament Director and TWCWT Board members receive feedback from their opponent and also look at the final score to determine whether that 6 rating will hold or not. She was quickly raised to a 7 by agreement based on her 6-0 victory in her first round match. For the first bracket, we had Dorothy Lam (5) getting a bye in first round, playing a tough match against Olga Azarova (7) who is now a 7 average due to her excellent performance on the last year’s stops where she finished top 8 in all 3 of the final stops. Dorothy would defeat Olga 5-6, being down the entire match and making two tough 9 ball shots to win the match, and then lose to Masae Aitoku. Masae received a bye and won matches against Kim Scott and Dorothy Lam to set herself for Sunday morning. Khanh Ngo (7) would receive a bye and win matches against Kendra Fuller (6) and Dar Domingo (6) for a Sunday match against Masae on the winner’s side. Khanh and Masae both play out of San Francisco and know each other (and their games!) very well. Eleanor Callado (8) advanced with a bye and wins against Naomi Manuel (6) and sister Emilyn Callado (7). She would await the winner of the match between Denise Domingo and Alice Loo who had defeated Rhiana Price (6), and Samantha Hill (6). At the end of Saturday evening, these were the matches for top 8:

The only regular players again in top 8 were the Callado sisters, who continue to show their skill and dominance in this event. Surprisingly enough, Masae Aitoku would challenge Eleanor Callado in the Hot Seat match, losing 5-8 and then going to the one-loss side to await the survivor of many matches. Emilyn Callado, who was sent to the one-loss side by her sister, would win key matches against against Olga Azarova (7-5), Alice Loo (7-4), Khanh Ngo (7-5), and Denise Domingo (7-5) to finally face Masae Aitoku. The win would go to Masae (7-2) who would have another opportunity to challenge Eleanor Callado. This is a true double elimination event. Eleanor would defeat Masae (8-6) in a very entertaining match. Masae capitalized on the few mistakes made and

Nubbins Memorial The Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial Monthly Pool Tournament in Saratoga, WY for June was held on June 23rd & 24th. 18 players from the Wyoming towns of Rawlins, Saratoga, Cheyenne, Laramie, Riverton, Wheatland and Rock Springs made it to Saratoga, WY along with two players from Denver, CO and one from Scottsbluff, NE to compete for the June 8-ball title. While not a huge field of players this tourney was stocked with stiff competition! Casper’s Perry Gilbert coasted to a 1st place finish that included tough wins over Tony Langi, Justin Martinez and EJ Glode before dispatching Monte Thayer for the hot seat. Perry claimed the title with a win over Johnny Cisneros who bounced back from a first match loss to Ryan Henry of Denver, CO and won six straight matches over Chico Cisneros, James Watkins, Justin Martinez, Tommy Lacarbo, Ricardo Martinez and finally Monte Thayer for walk through the loser’s side of the bracket! The third place spot went to Monte Thayer of Rawlins, WY who racked up wins over Watkins, Henry and Ricardo Martinez before dropping two straight matches to Gilbert and Cisneros. Ryan Henry took 4th place and had an opening match over Cisneros then dropped a match to Thayer before winning three straight matches over Lynn Duncan, Anthony Lucero and EJ Glode to finally losing to Cisneros. These tournaments continue each month during the summer with $700 added to each tournament til September when the added money increases back to $1,000 added. There is only a $30 entry fee which is paid back to the players 100%. The fact that there are no green fees or quarters required and $49 per night motel rooms this tournament is certainly a must for all rocky mountain regional players or those just passing through the area! DES MOINES, IA The 4th annual Midwest Billiards & Cue Expo is a wrap. It featured some of the world’s greatest players again this year, along with pool’s biggest fans. Dennis Orcollo, also known as “Robocop”, is truly a force to be reckoned with in the great game of one pocket. The scenario leading up to the finals was exactly the same as last year, with Alex Pagulayan losing his first match of the event, but fighting his way back to the finals against Orcollo. This time however, Dennis wouldn’t be denied, capturing the one pocket championship in convincing fashion, 7-2. Tony Chohan played very well as always, and finished in 3rd. Tony Chohan showed us that he is also a great rotation player, not just a one pocket champion. The 10-ball challenge was played on the bigfoot diamond table, where most spectators thought Tony didn’t have a chance against the likes of Rodney Morris, Jeremy Jones, Francisco Bustamante, and the great Efren Reyes. But Tony proved everyone wrong, capturing the title. He defeated “the rocket” Rodney Morris, 11-8 in finals, with Busti finishing in 3rd. Alex Pagulayan showed all of us why he is considered one of the best bankers in the world. The “lion” was roaring with some tremendous banks to win the “by the rail” Banks ring game over Francisco Bustamante. John Hennessee, one of the toughest players in the country on a bar table, put on a clinic. The 9-ball portion of the expo featured 142 great bar table players. In the finals, it came down to a match between two of the hottest players out there right now, John Hennessee vs Jason klatt. The match would be decided by who broke better, and Jason came up dry 3 times in the finals, which cost him at the very least the first set. John made the most of it, and got the win in a hill thriller, 7-6. Somphet Thongsouk, one of our great local players from Des Moines, finished in 3rd. Danny Olson finished 4th. Sarah Rousey was our highest finishing female player in the event. Sharon Rinkert was our highest finishing local female player. As the tournament director, I would just like to thank all the

players for their sportsmanship, their promptness when matches were scheduled, and the quickness at which they reported their scores. You, the players, made my job easy. I could go on and on about the stats from the event, but I feel that the fans that support these great events don’t get enough recognition in articles like this. Just like the previous 3 years, the fans travelled from far and wide to play in the open event and to watch their heroes battle it out. On the event facebook page, I asked that anyone that attended the event send me their pics taken with the pro players. You can see just how much it means to them to interact with the greats of the game. That’s what keeps them striving to be best they can be, and also travelling all over the country for events like ours. An example being a young guy from Illinois, Nick Ciaccio. If you’ve ever talked with him, you will know how passionate he is about pool. He has attended the Midwest expo the last couple of years, and has met some of his biggest heroes. One story he tells is about how he had Alex Pagulayan talk to his brother on the phone. His brother didn’t believe that he was really speaking to Alex Pagulayan. So Alex sent him a selfie from Nick’s phone. I was talking with Nick on Friday night, and I told him that him and others like him are what makes these events great. We could have the top players here every year, but without fans like Nick, the event would mean nothing. Seeing how Alex, Busti, Justin, Rodney, Efren, and others interact with fans of all ages is something that will never be forgotten. To me, I rate our events by how many people walk away having the best experience possible. I would say this year’s Midwest expo might get the highest rating yet. I thank all the fans

that attended, played, or watched from home. You guys are the best. I want to thank our sponsors for the Midwest billiards & cue expo. Pat Diveney, from Diveney Custom Cues, has been one of the biggest driving forces behind this event. We appreciate everything he does not only for this event, but for his players, the fans, and his customers. A great ambassador for the game. Dave Jacoby has also been right here from the start. He shares Pat’s passion for the game, building the highest quality cue out there, and putting on the best event possible. John Bertone and Kamui tips are also a big part of our sponsorship team. Diamond billiards products. Ivan Lee from Iwan Simonis and Aramith. Rex, Jason, and Steven, from poolplayermatchups.com. Ramin and MaryAnn from goplaypool. com. Again, we thank you. The vendors play such a big part of this event. It was great to have them all here. Diveney Custom Cues, Jacoby Custom Cues, Sureman Cues, AVS Cue Shop, Keith Walton Cue sales, Palmer Cue Sales, Terry Ashelman Cue Repair, and Action 24/7 gave all the players quite a show. Thoroughly enjoyed by all. We thank them all for setting up their respective booths. The staff at Big Dog Billiards went above and beyond again this year. Everyone, including the bartenders, the wait staff, the kitchen staff, the set-up crew, the assistant tournament directors, and the owners, put in very long hours to provide the best experience possible for all players and VIP’s. They truly deserve this recognition. On behalf of Monica, Rachael, Bri, Tody, Vicky, Shanna, Des, Michele, Cara, Jaymi, Anthony, John, Charles, Jessica, Kevin, Rick, Dylan, JJ, Marcus, Bob, Curtis, Jim, Randy, and myself, we would like to thank all who attended. You made the long hours worth it. I can’t say enough good things about the team from poolplayermatchups.com. these guys make the tournament experience great not only for the players, but the tournament director as well. In the 9-ball, we had times posted for all matches from start to end. It allowed the players to have breaks to enjoy some pro matches, get in some action, eat dinner, or just relax. We hope you enjoyed the change from previous years, where we were more of a shotgun style event. Ray Hansen with poolactiontv.com, put on a great show for everyone at home, and here at Big Dog Billiards. He also did a great job with player auctions for the pro events. I think he has learned a lot from watching the Chris Miller show. We would like to thank him for his help with promotion of the Midwest expo, promotion of pool in general, and all the behind the scenes help.

9-Ball Champion John Hennessee They say that a successful event is one that achieves your goals and exceeds your expectations. I believe we can say without a doubt that we accomplished both this year. See you all again very soon. Jon Brown, Big Dog Billiards Tournament Director

Team USA Standings as of June 30th ONCE AGAIN, it was Shane Van Boening who took the honours as the eighth event on Team USA Mosconi Cup qualification took place in Oregon. The tournament was the Pac West Invitational and it was Van Boening who triumphed beating Filipino Ramil Gallego in the championship match to take maximum points. High finishers included Dennis Hatch who is chasing a fifth Mosconi Cup appearance nine years after he made his MVP-winning debut at the MGM in 2009. Other contenders harvesting the points included Oscar Dominguez, a team mate of Hatch in 2009, and Skyler Woodward who enters the top ten for the first time. The name of the game is to finish inside the top ten of the ranking once the 17th and final event has concluded in early September. Following that, Team USA supremo Johan Ruijsink will be making his picks from the top ten finishing players. To give himself some leeway in this make or break year for Team America, Ruijsink will be selecting four players from the top ten plus another whose final ranking won’t be of significance. PERFORMANCE

MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.

7 Responsive Top Layers The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.

3 Foundation Layers The bottom 3 layers are high density pig skin, selected for its premium durability and legendary feel.

KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs. By splitting the shaft into ten sections and alternating the direction of the grain, Katana removes natural variances and provides lower deflection and more consistent results.
