As you walk into the former storage facility for the Northern Pacific Railway Company you find a touch of class and charm with what is now known as Montana Ale Works. It consists of a private dinning area called The Grill Room , protected patio seating, more booths inside, a social pool room and a hidden nook for video poker/keno players. The bar offers a selection of forty-two beers on tap and a variety of fine wines, it would surely satisfy anyone s pallet. The restaurant has an extensive menu ranging from grilled salmon and T-bones to meat loaf and macaroni and cheese. The hours of business are 4pm-12am Sunday-Thursday, and 4pm-1am on Friday and Saturday. Among the diverse crowd attracted to this popular spot are couples and families. The friendly nonsmoking atmosphere is accompanied by carpeted floors and eight television sets. The abundance of natural lighting along with the wood ceiling and rafters highlight the spacious pool area. There are six regulation 4 X 8 tables and one snooker table, all pay by the hour, along with two coin-operated tables. The rate per hour is six dollars, even for the snooker table, and seventy-five cents per game for the coin operated tables. Montana Ale Works is located on East Main Street in downtown Bozeman. The unique building is easy to find and has been well liked since it opened early last year. Early arrival is recommended in order to enjoy the dinning and the entertainment that is offered. This is a great place to bring family, friends or that someone special.

April 21, 2001 - Salem, OR After supplying the players with a variety of delicious breakfast specials cooked by Scott and Judy McComas, owners of Jammer s Bar & Grill, hosted a 16player double elimination 8-Ball Tournament. As if the home-cooked food weren t enough, Scott and Judy added a whopping $980 to the tournament payout. All the players competing in this special event were invited winners of Jamer s weekly qualifier tournament that is held each Friday. Money from the tournament is carried over each week until 16 players are qualified to compete in the big Winners Tournament . The format was a race to 4 on the winners side and a race to 3 on the losers side, with a $10 entry fee. Rack em Daddy is one of the best, well written, entertaining instructional books I have ever read. The author, Jon Denn, must be some kind of genius. Geared for kids seven to adult, he has a way of presenting knowledge of the game to any age group while keeping it fun. I read this book to my daughter when she was seven years old. A couple Brad & Brayde Gowin of days later, we went to the poolroom. As we sat down, I noticed two people were playing one pocket. My daughter asked me, What are they playing dad? . I told her they were playing a game called one pocket. Then I used the terminology from the book and explained the principles and strategies of how to play one pocket. Immediately she started recognizing a good shot from a bad shot. She could actually sit there and enjoy the game with a knowledge of what was really happening! Since then, I have recommended this book to all of my beginning students. This is a must read for kids and adults. I have even benefited from this book! I m sure you will too.

The APA is always looking for ways to give our members the best when it comes to the sport of pool. Recently, the APA has been a sponsor a variety of professional billiard events. This past January, the APA was a sponsor of the Third Annual Tournament of Champions at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. Each year the Tournament of Champions brings together four international champions in a winnertake-all, sudden death shootout for $25,000. This year s field included international stars Allison Fisher, ShinMei Liu, Gerda Hoffstatter and Karen Corr. During this event APA CoFounder Terry Bell dropped into the announcer s booth during the matches to provide insight and to tout the APA to commentators Mitch Laurance and Dawn Hopkins. A rebroadcast of the Tournament of Champions is scheduled for later this year. We will post times and days once they are available from ESPN. The APA has secured sponsorship of an additional two events with the Women s Professional Billiard Association to be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2. Since February, American Poolplayers Association (APA) League Operators throughout the country have been hosting the Camel/APA National Speed Shot competitions to qualify amateur poolplayers to compete in the National Speed Shot finals during the APA National Team Championships at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in August. There are 92 players who have already qualified for this event, and eight others will qualify in Las Vegas. All 100 players will compete for a portion of the $25,000 purse on Aug. 23, with the Champion taking home $10,000. The following players qualified to compete in the National Speed Shot finals from the Northwest. Speed Shot competition rules are simple. A player must sink three balls from the break as fast as possible. With just three balls to sink, this format gives players of all skill levels the opportunity to win. To enter, APA members pay a nominal fee, with all entry fees being awarded to the person with the best time at each event. Players may enter as many times as they like. This competition is played on 90 3½ x 7-ft.tables at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. It uses a modified single elimination format that allows every team the opportunity to play twice in the competition before being eliminated. Two divisions make up the Championship - Open (any combination of men and women) and Ladies. Teams compete for a portion of the $500,000 guaranteed prize fund! The best pool movie ever made Hustle: to lure less skillful players into competing against oneself at (a gambling game) <hustle pool> 14-1 or More commonly called Straight Pool was the game of choice in the early days of The Hustlers and Road Men. Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) is the young hopeful on the way to challenging past master of the green baize, Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) for his world title. Pool-hall America: a merciless macho world where success demands absolute ruthlessness and coming in second means a personal hell of inadequacy. The run took two hours and ten minutes, which means that over the span I averaged four balls a minute. I finally missed a difficult cut shot, but by that time I was weary; it was almost a relief to have it come to an end. There were about three hundred people in the audience, and one of them was an attorney who prepared an affidavit attesting to the validity of my claim to a new record. A few days later, the BCA gave its stamp of approval. Bert Gordon: Stay with this kid; he s a LOSER. Fast Eddie about his pool stick: It s got nerves in it. It s a piece of wood, got nerves in it. Fast Eddie: How can I lose? Twelve ball. How can I lose? Because you were right. It s not enough to have talent. You gotta have character, too. Four ball. Yeah, I sure got character now. I picked it up in a hotel room in Louisville. And let s not forget about Walter Tevis WALTER TEVIS is best remembered as the author of two popular novels about pool, The Hustler and The Color of Money. Both books were made into enormously successful movies starring Paul Newman. The Hustler documented pool culture in the United States in the late 1950s and The Color of Money followed up on the same theme 25 years later. Both movies were directly responsible for igniting strong uptrends in pocket billiards during the years immediately following their releases.

Richmond, California, 1993. Right off Highway 80 on Cutting Boulevard, a small island of run-down buildings sits behind the huge cranes of the old Kaiser shipyards. Among these buildings, The Tree Earl Watson s Crabtree pool hall still stands. Years ago Watson, a 60-year old black man, was a pool hustler up in the Sacramento Delta, but after years of heroin abuse he s left the playing to his sons. Jones, fathered with a peasant woman when Watson was a GI fighting in Korea, and TC, Watson s adopted ChineseAmerican son, a pool-playing prodigy, nightly hold court at the Crabtree. Jones hustles and TC plays. They take down marks, but this is TC s limit. Everyone knows he doesn t have the nerve to take onreal competition. TC s girlfriend, Lois, a white girl from Philadelphia, is the only source of order in a pool hall constantly disrupted by the internecine quarrels of father and sons. She manages the place and keeps Watson s dubious finances from total collapse. She is also a thorn in TC s side, encouraging him to broaden his horizons beyond this little smoky room, forgotten by time and neglected by fortune. The status quo is threatened when Jones sets up a high-stakes match with Dorian James, a ranked tournament player with a shady background in Asian gangs. TC resists the match until Jones plays his trump card. He reveals that Watson is dying, that this is TC s chance to set him up for a retirement which may be brief but which could at least be made more comfortable. The stage is set for the most important evening in TC s life. For the first time in years he begins to practice seriously. The night of the match, Dorian arrives an hour late. Now Jones reveals that he has covered the family s wager Watson s entire life-savings and is betting on Dorian himself. Then Dorian, seeking insurance, tries to use Lois to shark TC and break his concentration. There is a reason why achievement and crippling pressure go hand in hand. Silly tale about pool hustlers, and their world of gambling and high living. James Coburn mugs his way along as an aging pool shark who is still the greatest. The story is accented by much free-for-all brawling and macho ogling of women. Houghton Cast: Jonathan Winters, Jack Klugman A young pool player finds himself playing against a long-dead master pool shark. The stakes: his life. The best ever game of pool, however was in an old TV show. Maybe you remember an episode of the old Twilight Zone series called A Game of Pool. Jack Klugman stars as Jesse Cardiff, a man obsessed with the game who is tired of being compared to the late, great Fats Brown. If only he had a chance to play Fats, he could prove he was the best! But as Rod Serling says, Being the best at anything carries its own special risks, in or out of the Twilight Zone. Of course, the ghost of Fats comes down to play him one game of straight pool to 300 for the title of Best Pool Player of All Time. The game is chock full of strategy and skill shots, and even some mistakes,. The writer (George Clayton Johnson) and director (Buzz Kulik) obviously love and play the game of pool, because they pepper it with great shots and pool philosophies. There s even a nice message about how you should take time out and enjoy life. There s more to life than pool. Klugman is too far into it to understand that, though. The episode was first broadcast in October of 1961. So it was no doubt riding on the success of The Hustler but lucky for us it is not a cheap imitation. There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. The movie that made Pool boom again in the 80 s
Gamble: 1 a : to play a game for money or property b : to bet on an uncertain outcome 2 : to stake something on a contingency : take a chance Pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) finds the young, promising pool player Vincent (Tom Cruise) in a local bar and he sees in him a younger version of himself. After hearing Vincent break open those 9 ball racks like thunder Fast Eddie was hooked again. To try and make it as in the old days, Eddie offers to teach Vincent how to be a hustler. After some hesitations Vincent accepts and Eddie takes him and Vincent s girlfriend, Carmen on a tour through the country to work the pool halls. However, Vincent s tendency to show off his talent and by doing so warning off the players and losing money, soon leads to a confrontation with Eddie. Soon they find each other playing in the same tournament together that Fast Eddie had trained and groomed Vincent for those long months on the road. Powerhouse acting and distinctive character development propel this keenfollowup to the 1961 atmospheric melodrama, The Hustler. Throughout the years of my going into pool rooms, I have continuously remained amazed at the lack of utilization between the pool room owners and players. This issue has been going on for many years and has never been dealt with. Now is the time. The room owners complain about top players not spending any money. They view the top players as predators. The owners feel the top players come into their room to steal money from the regular customers and spend a little as possible. They think the good players are taking money out of their pockets and always complaining about anything and everything. The owners believe the top players are a bunch of cry baby prima donna s. Even at the BCA trade show, the poolroom owners have a meeting every year and discuss this problem. The solution they come up with is to get rid of the good players. After all, good players are more trouble than they are worth. The players complain about owners not doing anything to help support them. There are no, or very few tournaments for them to play in, while the B players have tournaments all the time. Where is the reward for becoming a good player? What is going to happen to the game if, once you become a good player, you are shelved to collect dust, like a trophy on a shelf? In all other sporting events, the top players are put on a pedestal. These top players are treated with respect. They receive rewards and privileges where ever they go! In pool, top players in each city usually end up taking jobs and quit playing altogether. There you go! We have defined a problem. In order to remedy a problem, you need to look for solutions. Sometimes there can be more than one solution to a problem. In other situations, there may be only one solution. There is always an answer to every problem. A correct solution needs to satisfy both parties. Both must give a little, in order to receive the benefits and respect deserved from one another. An ideal situation would be a win-win, rewarding both sides. My proposal would be for the top 6 players. These players would receive discounts on their pool time, but would be required to earn it. The first three players would receive free pool time. These players could be numbered 1,2,and 3. The next three players would receive pool time at a 50 percent discount. These players could be numbered 4,5, and 6. In order for these players to receive such benefits, they would have to maintain their status on a monthto-month basis. The top three players would need to play each other a minimum of once a month. These matches would be a $50 entry, tournament match, race to 9, with $100 going to the winner. The format would be... Player 1 vs. Player 2 Player 1 vs. Player 3 Player 2 vs. Player 3 (continued on page 10)

If beaten, the new player would receive said benefits for the remainder of that month, with the responsibility of finishing his opponents matches(if needed). A chart would be visible, showing each player s name in their designated position, along with their designated discount. Each one of these players must present themselves in such a way as to enhance the game. They must act like gentlemen and present a positive image. They must also be aware, if there is a waiting list and people are willing to pay pool time, they have the option to pay full price or give up the table. If they are playing another individual, that s another story. Ground rules could be different from one poolroom to another. The poolroom owners would receive nine higher level pool matches per month. These matches would draw customers and give them a chance to see a higher level of the game. It would act as an inspiration for people to improve their games. If a young player knew, if I improve enough he could get a 100 percent discount, he would surely be inspired to practice more diligently! The poolroom would be filled with more people watching these matches. They would buy drinks and later become inspired to practice. The more they come in, the more that pool room becomes their home court. In a short time the poolroom would have more regular customers. That means more money to the room owner for a small sacrifice. The player is also sacrificing his time to play these matches, thus becoming a regular customer himself. The good players need to be given some kind of reward. Most of them are older and have supported the game during many of the low points in the history of poolrooms. With the lack of tournaments for many good players, why would anyone want to become one? We have to create a situation where a new player would think, Gee, I would sure like to be like him! . If you have that, you can guarantee the game of pool to survive. Without it, who knows? There you have it. This is only one solution, something I been thinking about for some time. I would appreciate some feedback. If you can think of something better, I d like to hear it.

Have You Ever Lost Before ? by: Don Cheese Akerlow
You can always walk away learning something from a loss and that doesn t make you a loser. I was recently at a tournament, with a lot of good players. A friend of mine had commented that during one of his matches that he d beat a well known national champion during this tournament and he had done it pretty handedly. He walked over to shake his hand and told him good play . The person didn t respond, was kind of moody and arrogant about it, being down from his loss I m sure. My friend is somewhat outspoken and he just proposed a question to him, Have you ever lost before? The gentleman looked at him a little befuddled and said Well, yes . My friend s comment was to the point, Then act like it! , which in my opinion speaks volumes. We all like to win and we all lose but you ve got to realize also that you re probably going to do more losing throughout a years time than winning. It s like any other sport, the batting average of any major league player is good if it s 33%. So you figure if you lose a lot there has to be something to be gained from that loss. You can approach it in several different ways. You can become moody, arrogant, don t want to talk to anybody, kind of brood about it. That is not very productive. We all tend to go over any game or any match we have lost to figure out perhaps where the turn around was, what we did. What we missed and how we could have done anything different. I know I have many times. If you walk away from a match after a loss and you ve learned something from that, perhaps what not to do next time, then you gain. If we walk away with an attitude and figure, Well, I m just not on today , I m not in stroke , The other guy was lucky , that may be true. The greatest part of this game is that you learn and you keep learning. I don t care if it s Earl Strickland or if it s some average barroom player. You should learn from your mistakes or your losses. I like to watch opponents. Not necessarily opponents of mine but other opponents that I ll meet some other time, on the road or even a little bit later in the tournament. I find their weaknesses so I can capitalize on my strengths. There s many avenues that you can take to improve your game. Practice is only one of them, but to know the weaknesses of your opponents is a very crucial one. You can also learn from the mental attitude of an opponent. How he or she reacts in certain situations. If you play a lot of safeties that you don t need to. You re not in stroke. You re on your B game - so play a B game. You run a couple and you duck and hide. Just one example that can be used. I ve won a lot of games and many matches using the philosophy Play to the level that you re playing today . Don t think about how great you were. Don t think about how great you could be. Think about how you are playing today and adapt. That s what it s about, it s adapting to conditions that you re playing. We all get bad rolls. We all get unlucky, but we all get lucky as well. We all get good rolls. That s not saying that they average out but utilize how you play at the time you re playing. Just because you lost doesn t make you a loser. There s always another match and another day. Revenge is always one of the best reasons for winning.

The culmination of one year of APA pool league play brought 28 teams of amateur pool players from the 8-ball format and 10 teams from the 9-ball format to one of two Team Regional Championship tournaments in Salem, Oregon recently (last month) Teams from Yamhill, Polk, Marion and Linn counties participated at the events, which were hosted by Jammers Tavern and Sharky s Pool and Brew over two different weekends (in June). The APA (American Poolplayers Association) is a nationally sanctioned league for amateur pool players of all skill levels. It uses an Equalizer handicap formula, which allows all players a chance to win no matter how strong of a player they are. Teams that made it to the Regional level were Divisional winners or runners-up from one of the three sessions of play that take place in a year s time. The summer session starts in June and ends in September. The second session, fall / winter, runs from October through January. Then the league year ends with the spring session, which goes from February to May. Regional tournament play entailed a double elimination format where one team out of the ten 9-ball teams and two teams out of the 28 8ball teams earned a free trip to the APA National Team tournaments in Las Vegas during the month of August. The Nationally qualified 9-ball team: Behind the 9 , hailing out of the Roadhouse in Lafayette consists of Charlotte Heinonen, her husband Harold, her son Michael, her daughter Dianna Higgins and two friends of theirs, Mark Meier and Jim Shelton. The threesome of Charlotte, Michael and Jim also qualified for the 8-ball Team Nationals with their team called Smokin out of Pied Piper in Carlton. Other team members include Lisa Piper, Eduardo Munoz and Kim and Keith Perry. The second team to qualify for the 8ball National tournament is All in the Attitude playing out of the American Legion Post 21 in McMinnville. Players are Gary Osbon, Peggy Barnes, Larry Burnett, Sharon Hall, Sharon McBride, Darren Reed and John Vamos. This is a return trip for some of the players on both teams and a new experience for the rest of them. About half of these players have participated in the Yamhill county APA league for the nine years it has been operating in that area. New players join every year and the league continues to grow not only in the Willamette Valley and Portland areas, but also nationally. The APA national office expects membership to reach the 200,000 mark this year. In conjunction with the announcements and trophy presentations to the Nationally qualified teams which took place at the Annual APA Awards Potluck Picnic July 1 st in Salem, other teams and players received
recognition also. For their dedication and longevity in the league, these players were awarded Certificates of Appreciation. Member number 5, who actually was the very First player to join in the Salem franchise area: Alan Vollmer. Member number 9, who has been a Team Captain every session that we have had league play on Sunday afternoons: Gary Mink. Member number 18, who has played more matches on more teams in more sessions than any other player: DeDee Burton. And member number 31, who has earned many Sportsmanship awards throughout his years of play: Billy Bud Myers. High win percentage certificates and plaques were awarded to individual players for their performance this last season. Special recognition goes out to our 100% winners from this session: Dennis Heine of Sweet Home, Dani Parry and Kat Jenkins both of Newberg and a 92% winner: Bob Graisbery of Silverton. 90% winners were Linda Mergel and Larry Johnson of Newberg and Rod Bair of Salem. Each team nominates an M.V.P. from their team and then trophy awards go out to winners in each Division. This last session M.V.P. winners were: Gay Brousseau, Mike Adams, Bob Sellers, Michelle Swearinger, Deb Dahlstrom, Chetter Pratt, Mike Jones, Gerald Monteith, Ross Gay, Linda Opsahl and Linda Lou Garcher from the Salem, Stayton and Silverton areas. M.V.P. winners from the Yamhill, Polk and Linn County divisions were: Eduardo Munoz, Matt Dog Collins, Jered McCullough and John Cochran, with Special mention for Robert Simeral of Sweet Home. The highest honor acknowleged in the APA league goes to our Sportsmanship Award recipients. This session s majority votes in each Division of teams went to: Alan Scales and the full team of Ringo s Raiders from the Salem/Sunday 8-Ball Division. Alan Vollmer, the whole team of Jammers Bad Company , Linda Lou Garcher (our own National Singles Champion), Billy Bud Myers and Tiffanie Venner from the Marion County/ Monday 8-Ball Divisions. Gerri Prohaska, Brian Damewood and Donna Kingsbury from Marion County/Thursday 9-Ball Division. These players and teams have shown repeated acts of Sportsmanship to their opponents throughout the season. In many cases, every session they have played, these same players have earned this award by majority votes from their pool playing peers. We are honored to have them all as a participants in our local pool league. In Memory Of ...
Leon Long Fox Jr. 1970 - 2001
This is to inform those of you who did not know the loss of a very dear friend Leon Thomas LongFox, Jr. I am going to start this out by typing in a poem: Your stick and cue are now silent, but your name will remain amongst all those that loved you and knew you at the top of your game. In pool and in life, your challenges were taken head on, you played to win. And now as we go on without you, we don t know where to begin. Pain and suffering could not defeat you, though it rocked you to the bone. And now that you ve won the final round, God the creator has called you home. We ll need some of your courage and strength to find a way and carry on. In the tournament of life, you were a champion, in our hearts and memories you re never gone.. We Love you, Leon, you are with us forever. Leon was born on May 8th, 1970 in Denver ,Colorado passed away July 12th, 2001 on highway 191 south of Hay s Montana. Leon was 31years old. He was a very happy go lucky person and cared about everyone. Despite his many health problems Leon never let anything get him down. Leon loved playing pool, fishing, hunting, and spending time with all of his friends. Leon was one of the Billings pool sharks. Leon was also known as the King of Bullwackers, and also for the Leon rack. I am going to conclude this by saying he is survied by his immediate family fiance , Traci Braley of Billings, his pride and joy stepdaughter, Kylie Braley, mother, Gladys Colliflower of Billings, father,Leon Longfox, Sr. of Hay s Montana and several brother s and sister s so many friends. Leon s friends were very dear to him. He was not disliked by anyone he got along with everyone and everyone got along with him. (Leon my friend ever know you are not here physically but I know your spirit is with us all. We love you Leon and our thought s are with you). Your friend s always Roland and Toni Barnes, Ryan and Sara Grimm, Mark Davis and Mindy Bradford and many more friends that will never forget you. Kerry Lee Resch 1963 - 2001

Kerry Lee Resch, our most excellent friend, co-conspirator, pool guru, The Big Bub, a.k.a. Buddah, left us to be with his Lord and family on Thursday, June 28, 2001. Kerry was born Jan. 19, 1963, in Whitefish, Mont., to Louise and Matthew Resch. They lived in Eureka during his childhood, where he played football and started his wrestling career. In the third grade, be joined the AAU wrestling program. His coaches were Larry Hilderman and Charlie Thorstenson. They moved to Libby in 1980, and Kerry graduated from Libby Senior High School in 1981. He was an excellent wrestler, competing for the Libby wrestling team. Through the years, his wrestling career took him to Spain, Guatemala, and Mexico. In Mexico City, Kerry placed second after suffering an anguishing knee injury in the match, and lost by points in the third round. During his life, the entrepreneur in him led him to undertake many endeavors. He owned and operated Libby Cab Company, operated the American Legion Bar with Johnny Siefke and Clifford McQueen, operated P&R Cleaners with Larry Parker, and for years he restored antique pipe organs across the nation. To say Kerry loved the game of pool is an understatement. Marbles is just a game. He became one of the best players in Montana, earning respect on the table and off. He competed against the greatest players the region offered. His friends include many pro and semi-pro players, and has hundreds of pool playing friends everywhere. He is the 1996 Exhibition Amateur Trick Shot Champion, winning this title in competition in Las Vegas, Nev. He competed twice in Las Vegas, and captured many first place victories as a team player and in singles competitions. Kerry and Johnny organized the Tom Scott Memorial tournament in Libby. In 1996, Kerry met Bob and Becky Zapata, and in 1998 he moved to Helena and started a new job with the APA. He became League Manager and quickly made friends with the pool playing community in Helena. He had an incredible ability to make people laugh and gather around him. He was always hanging out with the players and introducing pool to anyone he could. He had many students he taught who have since excelled in their game. Kerry was also very competitive in dart leagues, and he d beat you at pretty much any card game. He loved kids, especially his little buddy Eric, and his cutie-pitootie Bobbie Sue. Kerry was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He held the offices of Worthy President 1998-1999, Worthy Past President 1999-2000, and Worthy Secretary 2000-2002 for the Mt. Helena Aerie #4040 in East Helena. He was very loyal to the Aerie, and did his best for the membership. We will all remember the smile on his face, the way he threw his head way back when you made HIM laugh, the conversations a person tended to get into with him, his gentleness in spite of his greatness, and the stories he told. He often talked about The Three P s: P****, Pool and Pfishing. He knew every song title, every artist, and lots of little known facts you didn t even know you wanted to know. He enriched our lives, and made us all better people just by knowing him. He took in everything, and cared deeply about us all. For those of us whom he loved, our hearts are less full with his passing, and we hurt. But we will party for you, man, and we will remember all you gave us. We will laugh for you, and play our best game. Kerry was preceded in death by his father, his sister Beverly, and his mother. He is survived by his brother Michael Resch, his sisters Karen Raihl, Pam Smith and Marlene Weinzetl, his 12-year-old son Reese, two aunts, several nieces and nephews, a slew of cousins, and all his many, many friends who loved him. Memorial services for Kerry will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 3:00 p.m. at Hagler-Anderson Chapel, 650 Logan Street in Helena. Viewing will begin Monday at 2:00 p.m. In Kerry s honor, the Kerry Resch Memorial Scholarship Program has been established to help kids with their education. The Kerry Resch Memorial Tournament will be held each year to support this program, and to always remember Buddah. Memorials in Kerry s name are preferred to the Kerry Resch Memorial Scholarship Program, c/o Valley Bank of Helena.

Rosendaul & Brownstein Elected to Billiard Congress of America Board of Directors by: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development
Mr. Michael Brownstein of Recreation World and Mr. Matt Rosendaul of Billiards Playground have been elected to the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Board of Directors as the retail and proprietor representatives, respectively. Fellow BCA retail and proprietor business members cast their ballots, which were due into the BCA office on July 6, 2001. Both gentlemen will become members of the BCA Board on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 and serve a two-year term. Mr. Brownstein is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in business management. He has been a retailer of pool tables for more than 25 years and has built his store, Recreation World (Natick, MA) into one of the largest billiard stores in the United States. Over the years, he has been asked to consult with several billiard manufacturers and retailers. His primary goal as a BCA Board Member will be to give retailers a greater voice in BCA matters. Mr. Rosendaul became the manager of Billiards Playground (Kalamazoo, MI) in 1992. After managing the 24-table room for five years, he purchased the room from the previous owner. A graduate of Western Michigan University, Mr. Rosendaul puts his business degree to use not only as a room proprietor, but also as the tournament promoter for the US Open One Pocket Tournament held annually at his facility. Mr. Rosendaul is a former BCA Board of Directors member, the current chairman of the BCA Instructors Committee and a BCA Recognized Instructor. BCA Retailer and Proprietor business members are also represented by Retail Representative, Mr. Tony Stick of The Billiard Factory (Houston, TX) and Proprietor Representative, Mr. Larry Cooper of Barley s Billiards (Atlanta, GA). Terms for Mr. Stick and Mr. Cooper expire in July 2002. The Billiard Congress of America is a national nonprofit organization, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose mission is to provide exceptional value to our Members by promoting and growing cue sports worldwide.

Our unique tournament rewards our senior 3-C players by allowing them to compete on a national basis and have a chance to be the World s 3-C Champ. Let us not forget the seniors are responsible for keeping our great sport alive for the past few decades. The 3-C senior tour presently has THIRTY TWO events planned for 2001 with the tour starting in late July. The United Professional Pocket Billiards Association
As professional pool players, we all have a responsibility to the game and to those who play it. For almost 2 years, we have not had an association for the players. The result is no group = no rankings = no sponsors. Instead of everybody complaining about no tour, no rankings, and no money, let us all do our part and start at step one. We are not asking anyone to sign an over binding contract, but simply join our organization to promote professional pool. There will be a board and it will be a democratic system and not a dictatorship. The board will consist of players and members of the business community outside the pool industry. Our goals in the beginning are very modest, but as we try to promote the game to higher levels, we will ask for stronger commitments from you, the player. First, we want to prove ourselves to you. Remember, our goals are all eventually the same, to promote this game into a major sport. 9-BALL PRACTICE DRILLS English - is very complicated and
therefore requires considerable practice before it can be used effectively. Some of the variables that must be considered are; cue-stick induced deflection (squirt), cue-ball curve, cue-ball jump, english-induced throw, transfer of english and dissipation of english. To make matters worse, all of these variables change with the condition of the cue tip, cloth, cushions, and balls. The rudiments of english can be practiced without using an object ball. Place the cue ball on the center spot and shoot at each of the diamonds in turn. When shooting at each diamond, try to predict where the cue ball will go with maximum right, left, top and bottom english before executing the shot. Where will the cue-ball hit the second and third cushions? Set a chalk on each rail where you expect the cue ball to hit. You should be able to guess where the cue ball will hit the second cushion within one diamond, the third cushion within two diamonds, and the fourth cushion within three diamonds. Accurate predictions are difficult even when no english is used and is extremely difficlut when english is
used. To fight off the frustration, remind yourself, you are learning something that your opponent will probably never know. This diagram shows an english practice drill that uses an object ball. Place the 9-ball on the head spot and the cue ball on the center spot. Shoot the 9-ball into pocket A with maximum top, bottom, left and right english. As in the previous drill, try to predict where the cue ball will strike the first and second cushions with each type of english. The 9-ball is not an easy shot even when no english is used. When using maximum english the 9-ball will probably be missed twice as frequently. For some people, it may be better to start with the 9-ball a few ball diameters closer to the side rail. But keep in mind; it s better to miss the shot in practice than to miss it in a competitive game. This setup can also be used for a position drill in which english must be used. The challenge is to shoot the 8ball into pocket S and then shoot the 9-ball into one of the other pockets. When you can make the 9-ball into all six pockets, without missing, you should be able to win most barroom tournaments.
Cut Shots - Having the ability to
make thin cut shots (high cut angle), provides yet another tool in getting out of difficult situations. Practicing thin cut shots not only builds proficiency at thin cut shots but it also makes average cut shots seem easier. Most thin cut shots are missed by hitting the object ball too thick (not c u t t i n g enough). This is caused by a psychological tendency of not wanting to completely miss the object ball. In NINE-BALL this is good, because missing the object ball is a foul. Cut shots approaching 90 degrees can theoretically be made. The problem with extremely thin cuts is that there is a chance that the object ball will be missed. And even if you hit the object ball it won t move very far. When shooting as hard as is practical the object ball will move only a few inches at a cut angle of 85 degrees. For a cut shot of 80 degrees the object ball will move a maximum of about four feet. The diagram shows a series of thin cut shots into a corner pocket. An object ball is placed on the foot string one diamond from the side rail. The cue ball is placed one diamond from the
opposite side rail. The various placements for the cue ball are shown in the diagram along with the cut angle for each position. The indicated cut angle is accurate for a 50-inch table (with tight pockets) on a smaller table the cut angle would be slightly greater for positions 1 through 5 and slightly less for positions 6 through 10. Cutting the object ball into the pocket from cue-ball position 1 is extremely difficult. The cut angle is 83 degrees which means the cue ball must be struck extremely hard to make the object ball roll all the way to the pocket. But, because the shot borders on impossible, practicing to make it is a real challenge. From cue-ball position 2, the cut angle is 78 degrees; therefore, the shot can be made. From position 4 the cut angle is 67 degrees and a good shooter should make it about 50 percent of the time. Note: It is physically impossible to cut an object ball more than 90 degrees when normal cut shot techniques are used. However, it is possible to cut an object more than 90 degrees if the cue ball is made to jump up and land on the far side of the object ball.

type of qualifiers such as they hold in Colorado Springs for the Olympic Games? Tournaments throughout the United States perhaps as a State Championship with qualifiers to get to the State Championship. Their reply was that nothing had been formulated as yet but everything is on the table to make it as fair as possible and have the best representation that is possible to be sent on to the World Games and eventually the Olympics. There was no update on the Olympics as yet. There were other concerns about the trade show with space and vehicles that were there, that may or may not have been obscuring or blocking other vendors. After the trade show got started everybody seemed to have had their sales running along at a pretty good clip, so the concern was lightened. Next year s BCA International Trade Show will be in New Orleans July 25 - 27, 2002 at the Morial Convention Center. There are many plans for the promotion of pool through the BCA that are coming up in the future and press releases will be forthcoming. As they are given to us, we will inform you, the pool player, of what they are. You can look forward to what s coming up and what s going on in the future and what the future of pool is for everybody because it s everybody s game. Also discussed in the newsconference was the upcoming pool on PBS, how it is going to relate. It must be educational in nature as well as getting the message across that pool is for everyone and everyone can play. There will be more on when in the fall we can expect to see it on PBS. We will have news releases in future issues. I also ran into Carissa Biggs from Portland and we talked for a good forty-five minutes to an hour, maybe even longer. It was ncie to meet her and be able to talk with her. One of the highlights for me at the show was to meet the incomparable World Champion Jimmy Caras. I also was able to take a picture of him which will be a treasured memorabelia for myself. I was very impressed with the organization of the trade show and how well it was run. There were over 1,300 booths from BCA member exhibitors from around the world. Exhibitor categories included: billiard & game tables, cloth, slate, cues, cases, balls, racks and stands, chalk and talc, lighting, decor, billiard accessories, spas, bars and barstools, apparel, associations, books and videos, darts and dartboards, software, food service items, jukeboxes, publications, insurance and promotional items. On The Break would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of BCA and W.T. Glasgow, Inc (Expo Management) and Dave Anglum of Colle & McVoy, Inc. (marketing firm) for an excellent Trade Expo and look forward to next year s show in New Orleans.

8-BALL PRACTICE DRILLS The following are some examples of practice drills designed to teach various aspects of the game. The estimated scores that a barroom player would get assumes a 44-inch table with large pockets. Aim Accuracy -- Aim accuracy is the ability to make the cue ball go in the direction you intended for it to go. All knowledge in the world won t do any good if your aim accuracy is lacking. A rudimentary accuracy drill is shown. Place the cue ball behind the head string in front of one of the diamonds as demonstrated by position A . Aim and shoot the cue ball directly at the corresponding diamond on the foot rail. The objective is to make the cue ball rebound directly back along its original path. Care must be taken to avoid inadvertent side english which will cause the rebound path to deviate. This exercise can be made more difficult by starting with the cue ball touching the head rail. A more difficult aim and shooting drill is also shown. Place the cue ball directly on the head string one diamond from the side rail as indicated by position B . Place a target ball (4ball) on the rail at the opposite end of the head string. Shoot for the center of the target ball so that the cue ball rebounds directly back along its original path. Any cue ball error will be magnified because of the round surface of the target. This drill can be made more difficult by placing the cue ball on the rail thus requiring a rail bridge. To further increase difficulty, set up the same shot using the length of the table as shown by cue ball position D with the target ball (3-ball) on the foot rail. Some bottom english must be used in order to make the cue ball rebound all the way back to the head rail. This is because the target ball does not stop the forward roll of the cue ball like the cushion would;
therefore, roll is acting in opposition to its rebound direction. Scoring can be done by temporarily marking the head rail as shown. If the ball rebounds back to the center diamond it is scored as a 10. If it strikes the side rail it s a zero. A good barroom player should average about 6 points per shot. Combination shots require great accuracy. It follows that they can be used in a drill to help improve accuracy. Set up a series of combination shots with the cue ball in the center of the table as shown. Make distances a , b , and d different for each shot (the shot is the most difficult when all three are equal). Try to position the balls so that the combination is straight-in. The straighter they are, the less judgment that is required. A good barroom player should average about 5 successes in each series of 6 shots on a 44-inch table. Since combination shots are so distance sensitive, average success rate will vary depending on table size. Another simple accuracy drill is shown. Place an object ball on the center spot and the cue ball about 6 inches from the corner pocket (pocket K). The object ball is shot directly into the opposite corner pocket (pocket P). This shot is not extremely difficult (permissible error is shown for different size tables) but it does require good s h o o t i n g technique. A good barroom shooter should make this shot about 7 out ot 10 attempts. This

drill can also be used to help diagnose the cause of shooting slumps. If the shot is consistently missed on the same side, it is generally the result of improper eye positioning realative to the stick. The eye position, distance the chin is above the stick, etc. can be adjusted until your normal accuracy r e t u r n s . Regardless of skill level, this drill should be shot about 10 times at the beginning of every practice session. This will help avert a shooting slump by allowing accuracy problems to be recognized when they begin creeping into your game. The same drill can also be used to help alleviate the bad habit of last-second aim corrections. Set up the shot as described and assume your normal shooting stance; when aim is thought to be perfect, close your eyes, take a few more preliminary strokes, then execute the shot. With the eyes closed, there is less tendency to change aim alignment. Your success rate should not drop more than about 50 percent with your eyes closed.

Saturday began the task of 8-ball. Lots of sunshine and other events going on the valley so it wasn t quite the turnout we expected. 1998 marked Ewa Mataya Laurance s return to the winner s circle after a winless 1997. In April Ewa captured the Brunswick Cues Boston Classic title in a thrilling final against top-ranked Allison Fisher. Ewa s play was consistent all year, with seven top8 finsihes to conclude the year ranked #5. Always a favorite with the spectators for her easy grace and fluid stroke, Ewa is sure to continue her run for the #1 position. Perhaps the best-known personality in the sport, the Striking Viking learned to play in her native town of Gavie, Sweden at the age of 14. She won the European Championship at 17, and has gone on to win every major title in the sport since then, including the World Championships, WPBA Nationals and the U.S. Open. She is the 1992 Sportsperson of the Year, and twotime Player of the Year, and former President of the WPBA (1996-97). Ewa is the author of Ewa Mataya s Pool Guide and the recently published The Complete Idiot s Guide to Pool & Billiards , as well as the column Ewa for Pool and Billiard Magazine. She is familiar to TV audiences through her appearances on national shows such as Late Night with David Letterman , Live with Regis and Kathie Lee and The Today Show , and provides expert commentary on ESPN alongside husband and cocommentator, Mitchell Laurence. She has one daughter, Nikki, and makes Charlotte, North Carolina her home. Tiffany Nelson Madawaska, ME
Tiffany is a star of the Women s Professional Billiard Association. After turning pro at the age of 13, she is currently ranked #13 on the WPBA Tour and was voted the 2000 Rookie of the Year on the WPBA tour by Billiard Digest. In 2000, Tiffany finished 5th in the L.A. Classic and the Baltimore Classic where she beat Allison Fisher, Gerda Hofstatter and Jeanette Lee. She also had a 5th place finish in 1997 at the ESPN Ultimate 9-Ball Challenge and 2nd in the Orlando Classic in 1994. Media credits range from appearances on ESPN, ESPN2, and LIFETIME, to featured articles in Billiard Digest and Pool & Billiard Magazine. Her practice time is spent at TJ s Classic Billiards in Waterville, Maine. Tiffany will receive her Bachelors Degree in Business Management in May 2002 from Thomas College, Waterville, Maine.
Karen had a phenomenal year in 1999, rising to #4 in the rankings. She came to the United States from Ireland in June of 1998 and began playing in qualifying tournaments to earn the right to compete on the WPBA Tour. Karen won 8 qualifiers in a row, and played in her first WPBA Event in New York in August 1998. She finsihed 7th in that event, and has only gotten better. In 1999, Karen finished 2nd in the Gentleman Jack Great Dallas Shootout, 3rd in the Cuetec Cues Player Championship in Valley Forge and the Discovery Huther-Doyle Rochester Classic, and 4th in the Brunswick New York Classic, the Bucky s Casino Arizona Classic in Prescott and the Soaring Eagle WPBA Nationals. Not bad for her first year! Karen now lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With 4 World Snooker Championships and 2 World English Billiards Championships under her belt, she cannot be said to be a newcomer to cue sports. Karen s goal is to become the #1 9-Ball player in the world and to be the World Champion. She practices at Family Recreation and Pete Fusco s for 4 hours per day. She hints to new players that one should try to develop a good, consistent straight stroke, which will help in shot making under pressure. In addition, Karen believes one should watch and study professional players as often as possible.

Jeanette Lee, known by many as The Black Widow , has been a leading professional in women s billiards for half a decade. She rose to prominence in 1994 when, after less than two years on the tour, Jeanette became the Number 1 ranked professional in the world. Her string of accolades continued to mount with Jeanette winning the 1994 WPBA Player of the Year Award (as named by Billiards Digest and Pool and Billiard Magazine) and the WPBA s prestigious Sportsperson of the Year Award in 1998. Jeanette continues to dominate the professional billiards scene winning five titles in 1999 (Gentleman Jack Great Dallas Shootout, Viejas Southern California Classic, Tournament of Champions, ESPN Ultimate 9-Ball Shootout and ESPN Ultimate 9-Ball Challenge). Jeanette is highly visible outside of her sport and can be seen in television and magazines worldwide. Some of her recent publicity pieces include HBO Real Sports , Esquire Magazine, MTV and Cigar Aficionado. Jeanette is also finishing up on a book called The Black Widow s Guide to Killer Pool expected to hit bookshelves nationwide in April 2000.

Allison Fisher retained the #1 ranking in 1998 for the third consecutive year, winning five Classic Tour events, in San Diego, Valley Forge, Detroit, San Francisco, and Hawaii. In fact, she never placed lower than 5th! The reigning and three-time World 9-Ball Champion, Allison added to this remarkable season the WPBA Nationals, the Asian Amway Cup, the first-ever $25,000 winner-take-all Tournament of Champions, and European 14.1 and 9-Ball crowns. In addition, Allison prevailed in both matches of the historic live ESPN Ultimate 9-Ball Challenge and Shootout, winning a total of $65,000 in these two matches and tying the event record. Her $154,000 in U.S. earnings this year breaks the single-season earning record, and she has an unbelievable 1998 win-loss record of 91 match wins versus only 11 losses! Allison began her cue-sport career in England, at the age of seven. By 15, she had won her first title, National Ladies Champion. Over the following years she won 18 major titles, including seven World Ladies Championships, three Mixed Doubles, and the only Ladies Doubles Championship ever held. In September of 1995, the Classic tour lured the Fisher Queen to the states to try her hand at 9-Ball. She finished a commanding 9th in her first event, then burst into the winner s circle at the very next stop in Orlando, capturing her first of an amazing 23 Classic Tour titles. She also won that year s Connelly WPBA Nationals, a feat she repeated in 1996 and 1998.
