I arrived in New Orleans on a flight, Wednesday the 24th. This was the first time I ve been in the south for over 20 years, and it was the first time in 25 years that I had flown. After a twenty minute cab ride to my hotel, I checked in and went down to the convention center about seven o clock in the evening where the Billiard Congress of (The Big Easy continued on page 16)

BREAKTHROUGH Part 2 A Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem
About the Author Dean Shane Cassem Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. PART 2
In Part One, Friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keating to the game of pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captively as Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in Willie s Pool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off in a rage, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. THE STICK SMIRKED THEN SMILED JUST ENOUGH TO SHOW his toothy grin, and said. Been playing pool since I was bout twelve. He stared straight ahead as if I d taken him back twenty years and a film projector was replaying the frames. Always played pool, far as can remember, kid. Clearing my throat as if it had a big frog in it, I continued, uh Stick, would you teach me how to play pool . . . that is, if I paid for the time? Frowning as though I d asked him what color his underwear was, he raised his eyebrows inordinately, thought about what I said then asked dubiously, you ever play the game before? I shook my head. Never? Nod. Humph, he said. Then canting his head, he added, pay for all the time? Yeah that s right, I answered quickly. Turning to the large glass windows, I watched as a streak of lightning flashed across the dark, moonless sky. In the space of that brilliant nanosecond, I saw a hard cold rain slant into the windows. The wetness crawled down the translucent glass like gooey globs slithering down a wall. My thoughts washed back to the day they buried Mama. When da ya wanta do this, kid? He asked. I pressed my lips together then said, Anytime I m here and you re not involved in a game. He smiled then nodded. Sure kid, that d be alright. He eyed me from head to toe like a coach evaluating his talent. Then he pursed his lips and said, eye-hand coordination helps. Turning my lip dubiously, I said, played bout everything over at school. Uh huh, what day? Tomorrow? Hey Stick! Tools Spinard yelled unexpectedly from across the room. Tools, a heavy set middle-aged man with a large belly, drove around in a Snap-On Tools truck all day. His thin dark hair struggled to cover a bald spot on top of his head. Yeah, Tools, Gadwell barked. I ll take Wakefield, you take the kid n let s play some eight ball,
five bucks a game. His eyes sparkled as his smile turned up his pencilthin mustache on his plain round face. Tools paused then said, He makes three in a row, we give you the game. The Stick looked at me then Wakefield then back to me. Play some pool, kid? For a moment I didn t say anything. Come on, kid, he encouraged, we ll give it a shot. I sighed and nodded okay. Gadwell s tall, curly-haired forehead bunched in the middle. His eyes narrowed and peered into mine. Then he laughed and shook his head as though he d just got the punch line to a joke. Looking up to Spinard, he yelled, Hey Tools! Tools, chatting aimlessly with three friends, looked up. Yeah, Stick. The kid and I ll take you on, he yelled back. Then turning, he yelled to Eddy Cooksey the rack boy. Eddy, my man. Rackem! Eight ball on table eight! Hair-lipped, skinny and disheveled, Eddy Cooksey raced across the room with a wooden rack around his neck. He pulled the rack over his head, flipped it down to the table and started racking the balls. His unshaven face covered a strongly protruding chin that hovered over a wrinkled plaid shirt that hung loose to his waist. Ragged tennis shoes were dirty and partially unlaced. The Stick looked at me and said, Kid, grab a stick, we re gonna play some pool. As Cooksey thumbed fifteen balls into the rack with the eight ball in the middle then raced off to the next table, I sauntered up to the wall rack and inspected the regiment of cue sticks. I picked out the first one I saw, pulled it into my hands then ran it through my fingers as if I knew what I was doing. This game shouldn t be too difficult. (Part 2 continued on page 14)

In My Opinion ...

I wonder why pool players go against the grain most every time? They don t get help. If you were studying the martial arts you d have a sensei, you would have someone teaching you the craft. If you played golf, you would have somebody help you with your swing, with your approach shot, your putting, at least to help you become better than what you are. If you ve played any sports you know you have a coach. He teaches you, he shows you, makes you practice and do drills that will help you in the long run. Not so with the average pool player, not so with most pool players. It seems to be, in my opinion, an ego thing. For some reason, if we ask for help or go to a billiard school, to have lessons, somehow, we are admitting that we don t know enough about the game. We re not good enough, or even worse because somebody is better than us, and god only knows that nobody can be better than we are. This phenomenon seems to stretch across all classes of pool players, whether it s average barroom pokers or top players. They will practice the drills at times, not the shots that they have a hard time doing or to remember the English and how it takes and where it goes, but they don t get instructions, and I m talking about most. There are exceptions of course and those players are to be applauded. In my opinion, in order for your game to get better you have to find someone, first that you trust, someone that has accomplished winning, whether its in a local tournament, regional or national. Someone who has been there, done that, been in pressure situations, in the finals. Being able to know the mental game is 80-90% of how good you shoot. Experience they say is the best teacher. This is true but in order to have quality experience you must practice. In order to practice you must have someone show you or tell you what you are doing incorrectly. Old habits are hard to break, whether it s with your swing, whether it s with your stance, whether it s your mental game or whether it s how you approach the table, what your routine is, whether it s the way you stroke your cue, or whether it s how you hit, whether you stand up. There are numerous things that can go wrong in your game. We ve all experienced those, so practice, with a qualified instructor or drills. It s not a guarantee, but it s a start and in my opinion you may need to use more than one instructor. Instructors are human beings and some have strengths in one area or another. You may find that going to another instructor will help you in your game even more. Let me know.

The U Turn Shot
Here is a trick shot that you don t see in many exhibitions because it has a low percentage make rate on the first try, unless the shot has been pre-set before the show. This shot is designed for a nine foot table. You start by racking a full set of balls. You then remove the front three balls from the rack and place the balls as shown. Object ball A should be aimed in the direction of the dotted line for the right corner of the pocket. Using a hard stroke shoot into the object ball as diagrammed. Ball X will carom off of ball A last and be guided to the far corner pocket following the solid black line. If ball X doesn t go, adjust ball A until the proper carom is achieved. Be patient and enjoy this shot.

For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a Chip Pool Tournament is in the February issue of On The Break, I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. Dog Days Long, hot August days. Dog days of summer. The long-awaited heat making us want to lay around snoozing, hopefully without our tongues hanging out We associate so many things with our furry best friends, the four-legged ones, I mean! Run with the Big Dogs; in August, even the Big Dogs are on the porch. Dogged the shot; just cannot seem to get onto the origin of that one ? (if you have any ideas on this one, email me (really): headingoff@hotmail.com.) Doggedly pursued the win; we have all been there. In the doghouse; we won t even GO there! Hair of the dog not a pool player around who knows what THAT is yeah, sure. Dog tired; after all, it is soooo hard chasing butterflies and sleeping all day - must be a musher thing. Up to our knees in well, never mind that one. Meaner than a junkyard dog never in reference to a poolplayer, of course. Found you like a bloodhound; sometimes good, sometimes not so good! Have you ever wondered why there are so many associations related to animals in our conversations? Sharks, dogs, turkeys, chickens. Maybe poolplayers are just naturally more visual. Maybe we are saying that WE are animals at the pool table! Maybe we are saying that we do not have to be verbally capable to whup em like an orphan step-dog, I mean child. Maybe we just LIKE sharks, dogs, turkeys and chickens. Who knows? And, I am sure, at this point, who really cares? Happy Summer, players tournament season is getting closer!

The Amateur Nationals.... What a fun and exciting tournament...You see and play the best of the best amateurs and semi-pros in the country and at times, other countries. 71 players attended at Murphy s Brass Rail in Athens, Georgia. Guess who was there trying hard to show their stuff? ... Martha Hartsell (33rd), Jo Woodward (25th), Andrea Saenz-Maes (49th), and myself, Cindy Doty (13th). We wished we could have done a little better, but we had a fabulous time. We got to watch the top players from each regional tour from all over the states and Austria compete for the 2 paid spots to the WPBA Pro event. It was a real treat to know that if we work a little harder, we could be right there...The by: Heather Barkley

July 11 14, 2002 Another fantastic WPBA Amateur National s event was hosted by Doug & June Murphy of Murphy s Brass Rail in Athens, Georgia and co-sponsored by Iwan Simonis Cloth. This was the second year Murphy s hosted the National Amateur tournament. This year they kicked things off Thursday evening with a HUGE charity Pro/Am event to benefit local player, Bob Davis. The event raised over $2000.00 toward his mounting medical bills. Jeannette Lee, Allison Fisher, Ewa Laurance, B e l i n d a C a m p o s , Monica Webb, H e l e n a Thornfeldt, Tiffany Nelson, and Tommy Kennedy made g u e s t appearances and performed their favorite trick shots. A special guest Jasmin Ouschan appearance by seven year old Landon Shuffett was also part of the evenings attraction. After the players autographed anything and everything fans handed them they proceeded to challenge their fans to a quick game of nine-ball. Spectators looked on with amazement at the talent that was displayed throughout the evening. As the weekend unfolded, ladies from 22 states and 2 other countries (Austria and Canada) gathered to compete for the National Amateur title. The tournament drew many players from the WPBA Sanctioned Regional Tours. Representatives from the following tours attended The CAT Tour (Chesapeake Area Tour); SEAL Tour (Southeast Amateur Ladies Tour); NEWT Tour (Northeast Women s Tour); NWPA Tour (Northwest Women s Pool Association); Hunter Tour; AWBT (Arizona Women s Billiard Tour); with the Ladies Spirit Tour from Florida having the largest showing of 12 members. Co-directors Peg Ledman & Heather Barkley kicked off the main event Friday morning with the players meeting and draw. The 71 players began their battle for the right to proceed to the next day s competition; dwindling down to 48 players by Saturday morning. As some of the best amateur lady players in the country where slowly eliminated, the 14 nine-foot Brunswick Gold Crown IV tables came alive as the inspired spectators got their opportunity to pit their skills against the lady amateurs Saturday evening in some friendly competition. The final 8 players returned on Sunday to a crowd of knowledgeable onlookers. The match-ups included Jeannie Seaver vs Gina Kim-Lipsky; and Helene Caukin vs Kelly Willis, on the one-loss side; and Michelle Allen vs

room was very nice with wonderful service and great food. The owners had specials and raffles going all the time. So, if you didn t do well in the tournament, you had a chance to win some wonderful things including a couple of pool sticks they raffled. The WPBA gave away posters of the top ranking pros and a T-shirt with the same picture on it, along with Murphy s, who also gave us on of their tt-shirts. If you got tired of watching pool, you could get a few autographs...such as..Jeanette Lee..Helena Thornfeldt...Monica Webb...Allison Fisher...Peg Ledman...Kelly O Yama...We even got to watch Allison give a pool lesson. Coooolll... The worst thing (of course) about the whole thing was the long flight...then when you get to Atlanta you have to drive 1 1/2 hrs to Athens .. We got there at 2am. It took me a week to catch up with my sleep .. Oh well ... It was worth it. I hope to see more players from our area next year .. It was an extremely fun tournament and a very realistic one for a lot of players in our Northwest area. I came home with a lot of physical and mental work to practice on. Till next time ... Cindy Renee Salvi; and Jasmin Ouschan vs Pam Bell on the winner s side. The skill was at such a high level that no player was eliminated on Sunday in the first round of play by a score of less that 7-4. First round action eliminated Kim-Lipsky and Willis finishing tied for 7/8th . In round two a miscue and some untimely misses said goodbye to strong player Pam Bell and Helene Caukin was also eliminated to finish in a tie for 5-6th place. The Queen of the Hill match saw some excellent safety play and miraculous kick shots by both players with 16 year old Austrian-born Jasmin Ouchsan sending Renee Salvi to the one-loss side to wait for an opponent. Jeannie Seaver defeated Michelle Allen 7-5, for fourth place. Seaver moved to the semi-finals to play Salvi for a shot at the title. Seaver advanced to the finals by defeating Salvi 7-2 as Salvi had to settle for a 3rd place. By reaching the finals, both players knew they had secured an invitation to the WPBA National Championships, hosted by the Miccosukee Resort and Gaming in Miami Florida December 4th 8th. Now they turned their focus to the task at hand, winning the title of 2002 Amateur Nationals Champion. As the final one race to 9 match unfolded Seaver won the lag. The players volley back and forth trading racks, with the score tied 5-5 Ouschan misses a seven nine combo to let Seaver back to the table. Seaver misses a long shot to allow Ouschan to gain a 6-5 lead. In the next rack Ouschan misses a tough 3 ball to give Seaver ball in hand to again tie the score 6-6. A tough safety battle begins the 13th game, Ouschan prevails winning that rack and the 14th rack to jump out to the first two game lead of the match, 8-6. Through the course of the 15th game Seaver sits in her chair anxiously awaiting a return visit to the table, only to observe the 16 year old Jasmin Oschan running out the final rack to become the 2002 Amateur National Champion. A great match by a couple of young talented players we ll be seeing as regulars on the pro tour real Jeannie Seaver soon! Again we would like to thank all the players for attending and supporting the 2002 WPBA Amateur Nationals, along with Iwan Simonis Cloth and all the folks at Murphy s Brass Rail. People 18 and over would donate a dollar to the Shriner s and if they won CB they would receive a $10 gift certificate to a local restaurant in town. C h i l d r e n d o n a t e d 50cents to play against CB or with there friends or with one of our workers. We had children come to us from all over the fair wanting to learn how to shoot pool and even had some ask if we would start a Pool League for them...so you can imagine the amount of 4-H, FFA and just kicking around kids that we had. (We will be looking into setting up a Children s Pool League after we recuperate from the next fair that we do.) On Sunday, which was the last day of the fair, we had a Tournament for the kids. 8 kids signed up and each one of them received a gift for attending. The 1st place was Samantha, age 17 (or Sam she liked to be known as) and then Lauren took 2nd place. Lauren had never even held a pool cue until meeting CB and his crew on the first day (l to r) Lauren, CB, Sam of the fair. Not to shabby huh! CB and his crew raised a little over $1,000 and presented it to them this morning at a local breakfast meeting. This was probably the biggest hit of the fair with temperatures going up into 102. We were asked to set this up and do it for the neighboring town of Grants Pass for the Shrine group there also. The Josephine County Fair in Grants Pass begins on August 13th and ends on 17th. And yes...CB accepted the invitation to do it all over again in 3 weeks! So once again.. I guess we will see ya at the fair!

THE FIRST SHOT I TOOK WAS A STRAIGHT IN on the six in the corner pocket. Before I actually set myself, I suddenly felt a nervous rush come over me. With sweaty palms and trembling hands, I set myself awkwardly, miscued and missed the shot completely. My second shot was a potential game winner on the three that sat dead at the door of the left side pocket. Determined, I balanced the cue stick on my thumb then jerked the stick and my body forward. The stick slipped off my thumb and committed another foul. Good God, Keating, Gadwell bellowed disbelievingly. I shrugged and looked around the room. Each patron I looked at either grinned or shook his head as though I was the class clown and doing a lousy job of it. This is not the basketball court, Keating, or the baseball field, Wakefield jibed. Star athlete might oughta go home and see if he can learn how to hold a cue stick. Everybody laughed. Embarrassed, I stared at the ceiling fan as it wobbled and turned just enough to circulate the air. I shifted my eyes outside. The driving rain kept slanting into the windows as a harsh wind whooshed solidly against the glass. The weather the day of Mama s funeral was similar. I wondered how my sister and little brother were doing. One hour later, I had still had not made a shot. Worse yet, I had missed two more dead winners. I felt alone, as though the whole world had deserted me. Inside, my guts tossed and turned. The agony of failing in front of such a large group of people and not competing stirred my emotions in a way that had me crying inside. Tools Spinard yelled out so that the whole place heard, Keating, boy! Anytime ya want to play me for a buck or two, let me know. My pocket book s already salivating. Everybody hooted and howled. Inside, my blood heated up some more, my face constricted. Might ought to try croquet, Spinard scowled, shaking his head, as though I d broken the record for ineptness. Grinning, he turned away from me to keep from laughing some more. Inside, I cried some more. To make matters worse, at game s end, I missed another shot that would have won the game. Gadwell, thoroughly upset, slammed the butt of his stick on the floor and gestured that he d had enough. No sense throwin away good money after bad, he raged, then broke down his cue and stomped off to the men s room. I was alone in the corner. After a few moments he returned, came over and sat down beside me and asked, Still want to do this, kid? I winced, then narrowed my eyes angrily and nodded slowly without saying anything. Gadwell snapped, Your money, kid. And got up and walked out, shaking his head, laughing. Inside, I made a promise to myself. I swore the day would come when they would no longer laugh. No. More than that.

This tournaments in the Northwest could have been used as a strategy to throw your opponent out of stroke, because I get to know and meet but more likely than not its more to get yourself together and back into some of the players, meet up with stroke. Get your head together, talk to yourself and get in your game. But old friends that I have made tempers did flare. Rich is a good showman and he plays to the crowd. America was putting on a Challenge of the Stars Benefit, a Who s Who of pool players. The event lasted until about ten o clock. Thursday was the first day of the show which started at 10 am. I was up and ready to go early, down to the trade show by the time it opened, went in, checked in and got in line and headed into the exhibition hall. I stopped by the BCA booth, talked to Amy Long and John Lewis, then went around to the various exhibits to see what was new. I ran into people I ve seen from previous trade shows, Tom Dr Cue Rossman, who was just recently in the Northwest this past spring and Jason Bowman with the A m e r i c a n Poolplayers Association (APA). Steve Mizerak stopped by and shot a few games on the Diamond Table that APA had displayed. I had a chance to talk with the Miz and he is recovering well from his stroke. It was good to see him shooting again. The show itself was a magnificent creation of glitter and glamour, bells and whistles and all the new products, everything put together in exciting displays. The trade show layout was done very well with all the big table manufacturers, as well as cue dealers throughout. There were bar accessories, stools, benches and games, enough to keep everybody busy with everything that they may want to do with pool or billiards. I met with a lot of the dealers from various parts of the country and was able to talk to them about how pool was growing in their particular part of the world. I believe that the traffic on the floor was down. Some people had opinions on that but the general consensus was because it was not in Las Vegas. There is a certain lure to the town that never sleeps. The town that s always open, the nightlife, the shows and the BCA trade show will return to Las Vegas next year. One of the best new products on the market was the Pool Shark Case, made out of different types of wood (tiger wood, boa wood, etc.) and created by Mel Larsen. It will be in the Product Review section in September s paper. These cases are one of a kind. As Mel said, he may make up to a hundred of each particular kind but will also do special orders. They are spendy, but the uniqueness is extraordinary. A see to believe! There was an appearance also by Raymond Cuelemans playing a match on the exhibit floor. In the crowd, was one of the best-known authors Robert Byrne, also a BCA Hall of Fame inductee himself. We chatted for a while. I also had the pleasure of meeting Jeanette Lee, Ewa Mataya Laurence, Loree Jon Jones, and Vivian Villarreal. New Orleans, the land of jazz and Mardi Gras, with its care-free ambiance was inviting to the visitors here for the Billiard Congress of American s Trade Exposition. The city is alive with sights, sounds, perceptions and tastes, where every meal is an event with cajun and Creole cooking and gumbo. I didn t talk to anybody that didn t have a good time, that included myself ..

July 13-21, 2002 - Cardiff, Wales Earl the Pearl Strickland, the 41 year-old from Greensboro, North Carolina, has won the 2002 Hasseroder World Pool Championship after beating Francisco Bustamante 17 - 15 at the Cardiff International Arena. The match was a thriller with neither player being more than three racks ahead at any time but it was the Pearl who came on strong down the home stretch to take the title, his third WPA World Championship. Bustamante, who had suffered severe personal tragedy earlier this week, when he learned of the death of his baby daughter, lead for most of the match but Strickland gamely stuck with him as neither man could get sufficient momentum to run racks at a time. The balls so often ran awkwardly after the break and there were an incredible four scratches and one jump off the table during the match. The CIA was packed to the rafters for the eagerly anticipated clash between the tourney s two in-form Earl Strickland cueman but instead of an explosive rack stringing fest, it turned out to be a cagey tactical battle. Strickland s safety play throughout was exemplary and he escaped from Bustamante s safeties with some quality kick-shots. However, every time Strickland seized the initiative his ensuing break shot failed to deliver the goods. Strickland grabbed the initiative when 15 - 13 down and looking in danger, as Bustamante scratched on the break as the pool gods frowned on him. That gave the Pearl the chance he had been praying for and Bustamante never won another rack. In the next Busta got back to the table but Earl had too much in the safety department for him. The final two racks of the match saw Strickland complete very difficult run-outs and when the final 9-ball dropped Earl jumped onto the match table and started pumping his fists. Strickland picks up a cheque for $65,000 whilst Bustamante wins $30.000. Tables for the Hasseroder World Pool Championship are provided by Brunswick, cloth by Simonis, balls by Aramith and Predator are the Official Cues of the Championship. The event s official bookmaker is Stan James. The Championship is sanctioned by the World Pool Association.
Earl the Pearl; I m Proud of Myself
Earl Strickland, never short of a word or two, was in effusive mood as he talked about his third WPA World Championship win. Addressing the post match press conference, Earl covered all aspects of the match; Boy, when he had me 11 - 8 I was starting to get worried but I was always thinking that if I can get a roll, then I can get in it. I also knew that if he hit me with a three or four rack package, it would be all over. The breaks were going all over the place and I changed my break cue during the match. Francisco was making the cue ball work for him more than me and I certainly took my eye off the ball when it flew off the table. Throughout the match my safety game was ideal though, very good. I thought I kicked very well too. I was a little fortunate at times but you ve got to know when to kick hard and when to kick easy. I didn t watch when Bustamante was at the table, I just covered my eyes and tried to stay composed. When I was watching I was trying to wish him to make a mistake but when you watch it never works. But every time I got back to the table for a shot I got out, but I really believe that the key to victory was that he didn t hit me with something large. That was the key. I played some quality outs - at 10 - 7 down in particular. Tell me how big that was? At 15 - 15 I almost didn t get out there and the pressure was unbelievable but I was thanking the Lord that he didn t hit me with a barrage especially when I was 11 - 8 down. Every game I won when I was behind was critical and I played very well in tough situations. In the last rack I had a scary shot on the 2-ball. I wanted to play a safety and I normally don t think too long but these guys are the greatest kickers in the world and I could lose the match if the shot wasn t perfect. So in the end I thought that if I can pocket it, I can win. I didn t sleep well last night, maybe four or five hours and I felt a little groggy today. This afternoon, I watched the Open on TV, lazed around and rested. I ate five hours or so before the match because I wanted to be a hungry fighter. At 41 I may not get that many chances at big tournaments like this because this is the greatest title you can win in the billiard world. (Strickland continued on page 26)

A special thanks has to go to all the staff at Seven Feathers Casino/Hotel in Canyonville for their super service and hospitality this past weekend (June 21st, 22nd $ 23rd). The Evergreen Division of The Association for Pool (TAP) held their spring session Titlehoders at this great facility and gave out over $15,000.00 in prize money and awards. It made for a long weekend for a lot of pool players as over 275 TAP players shot their hearts out in the Team, Singles and Scotch doubles events. Once 1st - 1st Place Titleholders Deadstroke 5 again, Roger Weibrecht did a great job as the tournament director with the help of Paul and Laurie Kennie, Ryuji Yamada, Rod Bair and a host of other players. Congratulations goes to the Deadstroke 5 team from our newest division in Grants Pass, for winning the grand daddy of them all, the 1st Place Titleholders. It was not an easy task as the Captain Cues team from Salem revenged an earlier loss by winning the losers bracket and then beating Deadstroke 5 team the first match in the championship game to force a second and final match. Captain cues ran out of gas and lost a very close match to Deadstroke 5 to take second place. What a fun match to watch. Moderate cut shots Having the ability to make thin cut shots is great, but the real meat and potatoes of NINE-BALL are cut shots from zero to about 20 degrees. These cut shots are fairly easy to make and offer the greatest possibility of moving the cue ball for shape on the next shot. Since you are intentionally trying to get these cut shots (for position potential) you better be prepared to make them when you get them. The diagram shows a series of shots that have a moderate cut angle. Place an object ball one diamond from the side rail and two diamonds from the end rail as shown. Start with the cue ball on the center spot (position 5). This shot is straight in (0 cut angle) but a one or two degree cut can be manufactured by cheating the pocket. After pocketing the object ball from position 5 move the cue ball to position 6, which is one ball diameter from position 5, and shoot until you make the object ball. Continue through position 10. Then shoot from positions 4 through 1. In going from position 4 through 1 the cut angle increases at a slower rate but the shots are a little longer. Once the object ball can confidently be pocketed from each position, repeat the exercise using English. Vary the type and amount of English for each shot. Place a target tissue on the table and try to stop the cue ball on the tissue from each cue-ball position. Thin cut shots Having the ability to make thin cut shots (high cut angle), provides yet another tool in getting out of difficult situations. Practicing thin cut shots not only builds a proficiency at thin cut shots but it also makes average cut shots seem easier. Most thin cut shots are missed by hitting the object ball too thick (not cutting enough). This is caused by a psychological tendency of not wanting to completely miss the object ball. In NINE-BALL this is good, because missing the object ball is a foul. Cut shots approaching 90 degrees can theoretically be made. The problem with extremely thin cuts is that there is a chance that the object ball will be missed. And even if you hit the object ball it won t move very far. When shooting as hard as is practical the object ball will move only a few inches at a cut angle of 85 degrees. For a cut shot of 80 degrees the object ball will move a maximum of about four feet. Note: It is physically impossible to cut an object ball more than 90 degrees when normal cut shot techniques are used. However, it is possible to cut an object more than 90 degrees if the cue ball is made to jump up and land on the far side of the object ball. The diagram above shows a series of thin cut shots into a corner pocket. An object ball is placed on the foot string one diamond from the side rail. The cue ball is placed one diamond from the opposite side rail. The various placements for the cue ball are shown in figure 16-3 along with the cut angle for each position. The indicated cut angle is accurate for a 50-inch table (with tight pockets) on a smaller table the cut angle would be slightly greater for positions 1 through 5 and slightly less for positions 6 through 10. Cutting the object ball into the pocket from cue-ball position 1 is extremely difficult. The cut angle is 83 degrees which means the cue ball must be struck extremely hard to make the object ball roll all the way to the pocket. But, because the shot borders on impossible, practicing to make it is a real challenge. From cue-ball position 2, the cut angle is 78 degrees; therefore, the shot can be made. From position 4 the cut angle is 67 degrees and a good shooter should make it about 50 percent of the time. The diagram below shows a series of thin cut shots down the rail. It s important to practice these shots so that you feel confident when you have to shoot them during a competitive game. It would appear that the shots, from cue ball positions 1 to 3, couldn t be made because the cut angle is greater than 90 degrees. Actually these shots can be made by using maximum right English and missing the object ball slightly to the left. The cue-ball rebounds off the cushion and into the object ball propelling it down the rail. When it runs into the object ball (actually from the other direction) the cut angle is less than 90 degrees.

In the Second Place Teams Bracket: A special thanks and congratulations go to tournament directors JR Mailo (team events) and Don Crepeau (singles) who kept the weekend running with precision, professionalism, and courtesy. Between them, they demonstrated how even a large tournament can run smoothly, and their contribution to the successful weekend was invaluable. The TAP Players also deserve credit, not only for the excellent level of skill that earned their positions in Titleholders, but also for the good sportsmanship and enthusiasm through the weekend. The focus was not only to win, but also to see who could have the most fun over the weekend. Even the fact that it was our first non-smoking venue only brought a minimum of complaining, which quickly dissipated. The Casino provided plenty of smoking areas within sight and earshot of the podium, and the players adapted to the new system quickly and graciously. By the end of the evening, even the smokers appreciated the clear air in the hall. (After all the smoking/non-smoking controversy I ve been reading about, it was a surprise to see what a non-issue it was.) The growth of TAP in western Washington has considerably increased the level of skill and talent of the participating players. There were no matches easily won. Every participating team had already placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their local division, so it was truly a tournament of winners. Speed Pool Record from: Steve Shamash
Speed pool is an extraordinary combination of skill, stamina and concentration. The player must not only pocket balls but he has the added pressure of a time limit. Of the various versions, the most difficult has to be the 24 hour one. The current Guinness World Record for balls potted in 24 hours is 16,723 balls where the 8 ball is pocketed last in the rack. To break that record, the player must pocket balls at a blistering pace, on average 1 rack (15 balls) every 75 seconds for 24 hours non stop. On July 15, 2002, Nick Nikolaidis attempted to break that record but at the 20th hour, exhausted and discouraged, Nick pulled out. I was just missing too many balls Nick said. I worked very hard for this event and I felt physically in top shape, but the last 4 hours are grueling and by that time I was already 300 balls behind my pace. If I continued, I would ve been out of commission for months because that s how long it takes to recover. I would ve done it if I was on my pace (for 17,000 balls) but it didn t seem worthwhile to injure myself for nothing. When asked if he will try again Nick replied, I feel that I ve let down my team and supporters and sponsors but I have to consider my options and I also have to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. Anyone can have an off day and we wish Nick all the best in his future endeavors. One week later Nick writes, As you may have seen/read or heard on the news, my WORLD R E C O R D ATTEMPT was not successful. I am currently reviewing the tapes to assess the problems. It has become apparent to all that I can easily attain the mark of 17,000 balls in 24 hours. Therefore I have just begun preparation for a second attempt at this mystical number! My reason for p r e m a t u r e termination of my attempt was an easy decision to make. The human body can Nick Nikolaidis s record breaking attempt take a tremendous punishment the first 18 - 20 hours with little it no damage what so ever (DEPENDING ON PHYSICAL CONDITIONING). Just after I week I can tell you all I am back at full strength, contrary to last year s attempt where it took me 4 months to recover. This is the difference 4 hours can make! The figures show that my start (noon - 10 p.m.) was slower than I would have liked, HOWEVER on the flip side, my last 10 hours (10p.m. - 8 a.m.) where much stronger than my previous attempt. I was on pace to perhaps equal my previous mark, but this was clearly not what I set out to accomplish. It is therefore official, I WILL MAKE ANOTHER ATTEMPT for all interested in the details, please e-mail me and I will send you the details when all is completed. Thank you, Nick Nikolaidis P.S. NIU to Host National Pool Championships August 8-10 at Huskies Den

July 15, 2002 DeKALB They re coming to Northern Illinois University from all over the country to stick it to each other and that s a good thing. NIU will for the first time host the U.S. youth pool championships in August. The Billiard Congress of America Junior 9-Ball Championships will be Aug. 8-10 at the Huskies Den in Holmes Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. Approximately 150 of the best pool players under age 18 will vie for the national title, having competed in qualifying events throughout the country to gain admission to the championships. The winners will represent the United States at next year s world championships in Taiwan. Besides national honors, players also compete for an estimated $40,000 in billiard equipment. Competition will be 9-Ball, the fast and popular game featured on ESPN and in The Hustler and The Color of Money. Cory Deuel, Jon Kucharo, Michael Coltrain, Charlie Williams, Max Eberle and Tiffany Nelson are just a few top pro players who have competed in previous junior national championships. Bringing the event to NIU is generating excitement both from campus officials and the Colorado Springs-based Billiard Congress of America. The BCA is the governing body of pool in North America. We re very pleased that NIU will host this prestigious tournament. We welcome the players and their families, and wish them the best of luck, said Dr. Anne Kaplan, Vice President for Administration and University Outreach. Billiards is one of the country s top 10 sports and is growing. By hosting the national championships at our wonderful facility, we bring an interesting new event to the NIU community, and we get to introduce NIU to an audience which otherwise might not know us. It s really exciting, agrees Donna Wargo, Huskies Den manager. Our goal at the Huskies Den is to become the best collegiate bowling and billiard facility in the country, and hosting the junior national championships is a good sign that we re getting there. Stephen D. Ducoff, BCA executive director, says that having the tournament at a major university not only helps promote pool in a positive way, but also helps reinforce the requirement that would-be competitors be in good academic standing. We re very happy with the NIU venue; it is a great fit for the BCA Junior National 9-Ball Championships, Ducoff said. The NIU staff we have worked with over the past few months have been wonderful, flexible and very supportive of this prestigious event. Also equal to the challenge this weekend was the Sure Shots team from Salem who won the 2nd Place Titleholders and the Just for Fun team from Klamath Falls who won the 3rd Place Titleholders. All of these winning teams (that stay active) will automatically be entered in our final tournament at the end of this summer s session to determine which of the 6 teams from Oregon will win the free trip to Las Vegas to the TAP Nationals in October. In the Singles event Chris Barton from Corvallis won the 2 s, 3 s & 4 s singles tournament and Jeff Hackinson from Medford won the 5 s, 6 s & 7 s. This was the second time that Jeff has won this very tough single tournament. Great Job Jeff. While it may not be the richest tournament, the Scotch doubles is by far the most popular (maybe its the free entry) and a big congratulations goes to the team of Bob Cook and Chris Barton from Corvallis for winning this sessions 2nd - 1st Place Titleholders Captain Cues tournament by defeating the team of Jeff Redel and Aaron Propst from Salem. This article is dedicated to ALL the W.S.P.L. players who have gone camping with us over the last 3 years!! We took so many pictures, that we really didn t have room to present them all! So, they say one picture can say 1,000 words! That s why we chose this one. It was actually taken on the first campout, and features an eight foot Valley Cougar that was purchased from City Lights Billiards and moved to the campsite the very same day of purchase. It eventually ended up in Bob Salvati s game room. So we kept it in the W.S.P.L. family! Since then we have had many camping pool tables pass through our hands, and the latest one was just purchased by Mike Cammilleri who provided the Tow Motor and Truck that moved TABLE. The latest campout saw some VERY DEDICATED, happy go lucky player campers, drive all the way to Westport, Washington. The trip is a little over 110 miles, and took place on June 28-30, 2002. At first we thought it was going to be a complete RAIN OUT!! But low and behold, not only did the player campers, show up Friday night, (and played pool until 4:30 am), but we were over fifty strong by Saturday afternoon. We had our traditional Pot Luck Picnic, (so much food that it felt like THANKSGIVING) on Saturday evening. Bruce Walsh, Tim Park, Rick Carlson and even Leo Hancock managed to show up and help us set up the tables at the campsite! THANKS Guys without your help it wouldn t have been possible!!! Just in closing let me mention what a great Partying Group we are. Over the two and a half day event, they consumed two regular kegs and twelve cases of beer; and that didn t include all of the B.Y.O.B. bottles that we counted when we cleaned up!! YEA, WE DEFINITELY HAD A GOOD TIME!!! THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED AND HELPED!!! PLEASE NOTICE W.S.P.L. PLAYERS The W.S.P.L. ST. LOUIS, MO BILLIARD CLUB network (BCn) and DISH Network will offer the final match of the 2002 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship live on DISH On Demand PayPer-View. The championship will air live on Sept. 29, 2002 at 7 p.m. EST from the Chesapeake Conference Center, in Chesapeake, VA. BCn will produce the live broadcast in association with Accu-Stats Video Productions and Q-Master Billiards. The event is available for $9.95 for residential customers and $99.95 for commercial accounts. Subscriber information and purchasing details are forthcoming. This is an excellent opportunity for the pool and billiard marketplace to step forward and send a clear message that pool deserves to be on TV more often, said Rob Sykora, president of BCn.
