SEATTLE, WA The Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) held its #5 tour stop of the 2004 season at Jillian’s on Lake Union, July 17-18. This is the first time Jillian’s has hosted an NWPA event and we couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to play. Jillian’s added $500 to the main event. The Break billiard newspaper was the title sponsor for the event, making it a WPBA qualifier. The winner of

this event received a paid entry into the WPBA Cuetec Cues Canadian Classic, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada this October. Top player Hsin Huang was still in Taiwan. The tournament favorite, Kerry Impson (winner of the last two tour stops) was knocked out Saturday evening after losing her first match to Donna Totten 7-6. This left the top spots wide open for a (NWPA continued on page 21)

EVERETT, WA - Shotze’s concluded a third successful season of its In-House 9-Ball League on May 2nd, 2004. Once again there were (10) teams with (3) members on each team making a total of (30) players. We are still looking to making each team (4) members for a total of (40) players competing for the fabulous payouts of $8,000+. This year our payouts consisted of $3,600+ in the singles playoffs, $1,888 for individual winnings, $730 9-ball pot and $170 top individual percentages. Our total payout was $6,161 for the season. B U Y I N G P O O L TA B L E S AT A D I S C O U N T: by: The Pool Table Guy - Leo Hancock by: Leo Hancock

Unfortunately, I have not been able to contribute to this fine periodical in the past year. Fortunately, it has been because I have had to spend a lot of time getting our own retail business up and running. I have learned a lot! In doing research for products besides our standard billiard offerings, I went to the internet. I needed to learn about everything from darts to poker chips. The first thing I learned was that there is so much misinformation on web sites that I thought my head would explode trying to unravel it all. It became apparent that a lot of these businesses did not have any clue about what they were selling. They just wanted my money. For years now, the traditional way of retailing has been changing drastically. Many businesses have felt the pressure of the warehouse store and the internet. Resellers of high ticket items like electronics hired knowledgeable employees who could offer the expertise and service that consumers needed to make a wise investment. I think back to the first computer I ever bought. I went to a popular computer store that offered many brands and had folks working there who could explain the differences and help me decide which was the best for me. Then when I had problems, I could go back and get my questions answered by someone who understood and who wanted my business. Selling merchandise this way is not the cheapest way to sell. Employees need to be paid for their knowledge and time. They have to be more than cashiers. You have to stock many types of merchandise to offer a wide selection; eliminating the ability to buy at huge quantity discounts. Another secret; service and warranties don’t come free. Manufacturers and venders will replace faulty products but they still have to be received, repacked and reshipped. The time involved goes to overhead and thus the final costs of merchandise. If a product needs service by a technician, that time and any materials need to be paid for somehow; more overhead. Deep discounts have to be paid for somehow: lack of selection, lack of quality, lack of service. Ever see the line on beauty products that say the warranty is void if not sold by a salon? That is because you may be buying something that is wrong for you without the advice of a knowledgeable reseller. Now we have the internet. Anyone with a computer can set up shop and sell anything under the sun. The problem is you have no way of knowing which of these people actually have any kind of knowledge of what they are selling. My mother used to say that paper is flat and you could write anything you wanted on it, even lies. Today’s paper is the web page. This is where I finally segue into billiards. Many of you know that we have been in the billiards service business for almost 20 years. About five years ago we began to see a few pool tables being bought from both the warehouse stores and the internet. Customers would call us to put them together. Many of these we refused to work on. The tables were so poorly built that we would not take on the liability. Others were complete knock downs that would take all day to put together and the cost was so high that many customers would send them back. Then about 3 years ago we began seeing the tables from the internet auction sites. Toss the dice…sometimes they would come to the customer just fine but without any cloth. Other times the customer received the table but it was the wrong style or the wrong size. We still assemble these tables and it has just gotten worse. Bad hardware, bad finishes, shipping damage, but the worst thing I have seen is that many of these so called “power sellers” and the like have disappeared along with the lifetime warranties they offered. We also began retailing pool tables and accessories a few years ago and last year moved to a full retail, bricks and mortar store. We hear the claims of internet and warehouse prices all the time. We also see the buyers’ remorse after they talk to us about details no one told them about up front. In order to defend our business and our customers we started doing some more investigation. I want you to be educated before you buy. If you have the facts and still want to buy this way, fine. My experience, however, is that once people really weigh the pros and cons they almost always end up buying from a billiards reseller who has expertise in the field and can stand behind their product AND the installation. THE TABLE First, remember that buying a pool table is NOT like buying a kitchen table.

If you are buying what I call a REAL pool table; real slate, real rubber, real wood, then it is going to be heavy. You are going to have a three piece slate which has to be leveled and seamed. You are going to have very expensive cloth that needs to be put on properly so that balls roll and bounce true. BEWARE: Many internet tables are advertised as solid mahogany, cherry or such. Most of them are not! This is where the knowledge of the seller comes in. We know that most of these tables are imports from China, not necessarily a bad thing but they are almost all made of maple or oak and STAINED a mahogany or cherry color. Many of these sellers don’t know anything about wood, they are presuming or lying. They may or may not be completely solid wood. What we have found is that one set of specs for a site is being used to describe every table that seller has. Some of the tables are solid wood and some of them are not. To make matters worse, you can buy what appears to be the same exact table from two different businesses and get two different quality levels. We found this out first hand. A table offered on the internet appeared to be exactly the same as a table we offered. Upon installing a couple for customers that had bought them on an auction site, we found they had a lower quality, thinner slate; end rails that did not come up high enough; mismatched wood with lots of filler and faulty hardware. After asking our own supplier about this we found out that the same manufacturer in China was building them under a separate contract for someone else… a cheaper contract! THE TRUE COST No matter who you are buying from you need to know the actual costs. The table price, the delivery price and the assembly price. Resellers like us will always have these prices. They may break it out individually or they may have a combined price, but you will be able to get the info up front. Many of the internet sellers, especially auctions have these prices buried in the fine print or not at all. I have seen some auctions that advertise “no shipping” but upon closer look they will have crating charges or other charges tacked on. Warehouse stores and department stores may offer inexpensive delivery but do not offer assembly. If they do… BEWARE: We get many calls from these companies wanting us to bid on assemblies. They always want the lowest bidder, not the best service. Many people out there performing these services don’t have any experience with pool table installation and are guessing. We recently reassembled a very expensive table that a local “technician” put together for $350. He probably did $500 worth of damage to the table and on top of that the client had to pay us close to $500 to fix what we could. YOUCH! ACCESSORIES Next cost, accessories. Every table needs balls, sticks, chalk etc. I can’t tell you the number of internet sights that I have seen offering a “FREE ACCESSORY KIT WORTH $500” or more. I say “NO WAY”. If you could tell what the quality of these accessories were and then went to price them individually, you would be lucky if you could come up with a fourth of that.

... many of these so called “power sellers” and the like have disappeared along with the lifetime warranties they offered.

We also see the buyers’ remorse after they talk to us about details no one told them about up front.

THE HIDDEN COSTS

Helena Open 9-Ball by: Mary Price

Most of these cues are cheap ramin wood. Two piece or not, they aren’t worth more than about $15 a piece. The chalk is the cheapest on the market. The balls are soft polyester that will first loose the cheap lacquer finish and then become scratched and marred in less than six months. And who really wants a cheap thin plastic cover for their beautiful new table. BEWARE: You don’t get anything for free. Look for cues that are made from Canadian maple with leather tips, balls that are cast resin and polished like Belgian Aramith and chalk that is fine textured like Masterchalk or Silvercup. If the accessories are less than this, fine, but you will probably need to replace them within six months. Bad cues with cheap chalk are responsible for a lot of rips in cloth. Scratched up balls will wear the cloth much faster and don’t play true. WARRANTIES & SERVICE Is there one? Most tables offer a limited lifetime warranty, even if they don’t say “limited”. The warranty should cover at least the slate and the structure. Many do not cover the rubber and most do not cover the pockets or cloth, these are called consumables. However, a reputable dealer will offer a standard 90 day or so guarantee that these will be free from manufacturers’

Bad cues with cheap chalk are responsible for a lot of rips in cloth.

a reputable dealer will offer a standard 90 day or so guarantee that these will be free from manufacturers’ defects. defects. Finally, the install, this is usually up to whoever puts the table together whether it is the dealer or an outside company. If there is a warranty, in effect, it will usually be limited to cloth application and slate seams. Here is where the types of companies split. Name brand tables have a company besides your dealer who is enforcing the warranty, not that these are easy to get honored without the dealer who wants to keep your business. “No Name Imports” also have a manufacturer’s warranty, but these are between the dealer and the manufacturer, so you have no one to go to but the dealer. It is one reason the imports cost less. (I use the term imports here loosely, many of the so called American tables are now manufactured, at least partially outside the US but they have an American company here in the states that markets and labels them.) In the end it is the dealer who is going to make that warranty work for you, look at the fine print and ask if the dealer has his own guarantee that the product and service will be honored. BEWARE: Internet sites offer warranties too, but they say that you must ship them the part at your expense. Then, if they deem that it is their fault they will reimburse you and ship you the new part. Sometimes they say that they will reimburse you for the expense of having a local tech disassemble and reassemble your table but, as I said before, you have to ask yourself if they will even be around after the sale! That brings me back to where I started. When you are spending $2000.00 and up for a decent table after you pay for the item, the delivery and the assembly, don’t you want someone standing behind the product? The internet & auction sites have people going in and out of business all the time. Often it is the same folks “recreating” new businesses and avoiding their old customers’ complaints. One of the biggest resellers of pool tables on the net a couple of years ago had it’s site touting all the positive feed back it got and showed copies of articles written about how wonderful they were. They are gone now and so are there warranties. In the end it was nothing but a computer, a warehouse and a shipping clerk. No one with actual billiards experience, no customer service. That’s bad. At a warehouse or department store, you at least have the option of going back and demanding a return or replacement if the product is not what you thought. Many of them have very liberal return policies. That is good. In my humble opinion, if you are even a little serious about having a nice pool table that plays well, you will seek the advice and help of someone who knows about pool tables. Someone who will help define the kind of table you need and keep you from spending money on things you don’t need. Someone who will spare you the embarrassment of bragging about the price you paid when the table plays badly. Finally, someone who will be there when things go wrong. That is the best! OTB

The 2nd Annual Helena Open 9-Ball tournament was held June 2627,2004, at the Valley Hub in Helena, MT. Friday night before the event saw a small turnout wanting to play a $10 mini. Edwin Montal stayed in the driver’s seat to take the win. Christian Stuart from Alberta took 2nd & Mary Price, Helena, came in at 3rd. The tournament saw 29 players fired Edwin Montal up & ready to play for the payout, which included $525 added money. The Valley Hub sponsored tee shirts for each paid entry. Though the signup was down from last year, the field was very strong with players from Canada, Idaho & various parts of Montana. Play started at 11 am Saturday on 7 bar boxes and the field was narrowed to the final 8 by 7 pm, after many very close & challenging matches. The Tournament Director, Jerry Crider, awarded $150 to high woman, Sky Tigart from Great Falls. Congratulations, Sky! Sunday morning saw this lineup: Mike Schaff (Bozeman, MT) vs Don Oliver (Missoula, MT); Jeff Boucher (Helena, MT) vs Edwin Montal (Calgary, AB); Jim Winter (Billings, MT) vs Robb Gibson (Helena, MT); and Jody Thornton (Medicine Hat, AB) playing his traveling partner, Lorne Kastrukoff (AB) in the continuation of Saturday’s bracket. Still standing when the dust from the first 2 rounds settled were Don & Edwin in the winners’ side and Jim & Jody on the 1-loss side. Edwin won 9-2 for the driver’s seat, and Don faced Jody for 2nd, but Jody was on a long run of wins, taking this match 9-2 and completing his run through the 1-loss side after losing his 2nd match. The 2nd Annual Helena Open finals was a duel between Albertans Edwin Montal & Jody Thornton. There were many truly great safeties & the high-caliber play kept the gathered fans engrossed. Edwin won, taking tenacious Jody 9-3, becoming the 2-time Champion. Great shooting Edwin & Jody! Many thanks to the Valley Hub for their support & sponsorship, to Clausen Distributing, Sandy Mac Distributing & Jester’s Bar for their contributions. 1st $514 Edwin Montal $232 5-6 $ 75 Mike Schaff, $385 Jody Thornton $140 2 nd Jeff Boucher 3 rd $257 Don Oliver $ 93 7-8 $ 50 Robb Gibson, 4 th $129 Jim Winter Lorne Kastrukoff

Requesting A Referee Referees are not active participants in the match. This means that referees will not presume that a particular shot might result in a “bad hit” or any other condition that could produce a foul, and will not make calls or rulings, unless officially requested to do so. Referees are typically assigned to more than one table at any given time, but even in those cases when only one table is involved, the following procedures must be followed: 1.) Referees in most cases will not enter the playing area unless the match has been temporarily halted by a TEAM CAPTAIN, COACH, OR CURRENT MATCH PLAYER. You halt the match by calling a “REFEREE TIME-OUT”, which allows time for the referee to get into position to view the upcoming shot. No coaching is allowed during this period. The referees decision is final. Do not simply look over at the referee, or ask the referee to “watch the hit”, expecting some action to be taken. You must first halt the match and request the referee to make a call or ruling. Teams are not allowed to use the “REFEREE TIME-OUT” in an untimely manner, or in situations that are obviously non-essential. Teams that abuse the use of the referees are subject to loss of time outs. Using the “REFEREE TIME-OUT” as a means to “SHARK” opponents will not be tolerated. Please remember that it is the responsibility of the TEAM, not the referee, to be aware of potential infractions. Study the table situation and call a “REFEREE TIME-OUT” if you feel that an infraction is likely to occur. The referees are there to help you. 2.) Contested plays will be handled by calling a “REFEREE TIME-OUT” and asking the referee if he or she was watching the table at that time, and was in a good enough position to make a call or ruling. If yes, the referee will make a binding call. 3.) Situations involving potential rules violations are also handled by calling a “REFEREE TIME-OUT”. If necessary, the National Rules will be checked. The Floor Manager and/or Tournament Director may also be called, in order to render a decision. 4.) Situations not requiring calls or rulings may be brought to the attention of the referee by TEAM CAPTAINS ONLY. No other member of the team is allowed to ask for referee assistance in these “non-playing” situations. If the request is reasonable, the referee will monitor the situation and take appropriate action. If the problem cannot be solved to everyone’s satisfaction, the match will be temporarily halted, the Floor Manager and/ or Tournament Director will be called and the parties involved will discuss the issue. Please treat the referees with courtesy and respect. These APA League members have volunteered for this duty in order to make your competition more enjoyable. Players or teams treating referees in a disrespectful, demeaning or uncooperative manner are subject to disqualification by the Tournament Director. Enjoy yourselves and good luck. Mike’s Power Draw Shot This month’s Artistic pool Shot is from the Draw Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 10. My good friend Mike Massey devised this highly skilled stroke shot almost 30 years ago, when he started doing exhibitions. It was designed as a one pocket shot then. When I perform this shot in an exhibition I set up the shot as diagramed with the reference ball being the eight ball. I informed the audience that I’m playing a game of last pocket 8 ball and I need to pocket the C ball in C pocket and get shape for the eight of course the C pocket is where I made my last ball. The C ball is a stripe

and F ball is a solid. Most of the audience is astonished when you execute this shot to perfection. Let’s now get to the set up. The C ball is in line with the first diamond from pocket C and frozen to the foot cushion. The cue ball is frozen to the foot cushion and is about a ball and a half distance from C ball. The F ball is centered in F pocket to block a cue ball scratch. The objective is to shoot the cue ball to C ball, pocketing C ball in C pocket. Then the cue ball draws 3 or 4 cushions to the position zone near F pocket. Here are a few helpful hints to help you execute this fantastic shot. Aim the center of the cue ball at the right edge of the C ball, your bridge length should be at least 8 inches and make sure your bridge is firm. You will need to use a very powerful (fast) stroke and cue the cue ball at 5:15. Mike also suggests that you let your whole upper arm collapse into the shot on the follow through. This is one of many skill shots that Mike has personally helped me with. Thanks again Mike for all of your great knowledge you have shared with me. Don’t get discouraged if you are not able to execute this shot at a consistency rate of better than 60 percent. Next’s month’s Artistic Shot will be from the Follow Discipline and have a DOD of 9. Challenge Shots By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

San Francisco Billiard Academy A challenge shot is moderately difficult shot that is set up as a challenge, such as “I bet you can’t make this shot in five tries.” It is kind of between practice and playing as it usually stresses a specific skill, and it involves the risk of loss — either of face or cash. These shots are sometimes called proposition bets, but the good ones don’t involve any kind of weasel-wording. In Diagram 1 is one of the first such shots I saw played. It is a two-person Bob Jewett shot, one the shooter and one the caller. Put six balls by six pockets, and start the cue ball on the head spot. The caller calls a shot and the shooter shoots it, then the caller calls another ball, and so on. The challenge is to make all six balls in the called order. A few details: The side pocket balls should be exactly one ball out from the side, which gives the best blocking for a cue ball that carelessly settles on the long rail. The corner balls should be touching the long cushion and as far into the pocket as possible which makes position harder to get, especially with large, deep pockets. It’s OK to move an object ball on a shot, but the called ball must be shot into its

pocket only when called. This last rule permits side-ball to corner-ball combinations, but the shooter usually doesn’t have a shot on the side ball to its correct pocket afterwards. Seems easy on paper, doesn’t it? I once saw a player try it for several hours and he ended up 120 games behind. Towards the end, the ball-caller was giving up odds of 3:1. Confidence is good, but overconfidence can be fatal. For a variation, place the wooden triangle in its normal place. In this version, the balls should be placed centered in the pockets so the individual shots are easier. In Diagram 2 is a cut shot challenge. The object ball is frozen to the cushion and the cue ball is just to the side of the head spot. The challenge is to cut the object ball into the “wrong” corner pocket. The technique is to use sidespin on the cue ball, hit the cushion just before the object ball, spin the cue ball into the object ball, and drive the object ball straight along the cushion. Even beginners should be able to make the shot when the cue ball is on the head spot, but the shot gets harder as it is moved farther to the side. If someone bets you he can make it in 15 tries from A, be prepared to pay. I’ve heard of a road player who would freeze the object ball at B and put the cue ball in the square at C. The bet was to make the same cut shot — no side rail first – within half an hour or so. He wouldn’t try the shot for less than several thousand dollars, and this was the only (Challenge Shots continued on page 27)

Rick Blackorby 12-09-1944 to 6-22-2004 Rick Blackorby co-owner of Sunset Family Billiards in Renton, WA passed away at home peacefully on Tuesday June 22, 2004. As some of you know Rick had not been feeling very well for quite some time. He was released from his suffering on this day. I had known Rick for over a decade. Most of this time in which he was in better health, humorous and caring. Always willing to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Although this past year it was very difficult to watch Rick go through what he was going through. Being on some very strong medication that would change anyone of us didn’t help either. I tried to just focus on the Rick that I knew before he became ill. Many thanks goes out to the people that did the same, and were very patient with him during this time. Rick did have a very big heart for billiards and wanted to make a contribution to the sport even if he hardly got a chance to play anymore. It’s even more important now to see to it that Sunset Family Billiards makes a contribution to the sport that it opened its doors for. So with that being said let’s all get the Northwest rolling in the right direction and grow the sport we all love. Rick, I know you’re watching so when you’re not fishing up there, rack up a few for yourself and play some with the best that ever ruled the tables. OTB Sean Finney

SACRAMENTO, CA The summer months have been upon us and have taken its toll. With the great weather and LOTS of alternative activities, pool players are making the choice to enjoy their time in the sun. Our Monthly and weekly tournament attendance numbers are at their traditional Summer numbers. The “Die-Hard” players will always be supporting the game and attending these tournaments all year round. We appreciate their dedication and perseverance. These are the “true players” in my most humble opinion. Thanks for your regular attendance. The July 1st of the Month One Pocket and 9 Ball events had a total of 34 players. Joey Gebron ran thru the field and took 1st with a well fought match against Amar Kang in the One pocket event. The 1st of July Monthly 9 ball event was won by one of most gentlemanly players to grace our tournaments. James Williams won the event by beating Tony Chohan in the finals. Every year Billings hosts the Big Sky State Games in July. Our July Round Robin Blind Draw Doubles Tournament just happen to fall on the eve preceding the billiard games associated with the Big Sky State Games. Our tournament provided some serious 8-ball practice for our players participating in the games. There was an excellent summer evening turnout of 23 players making up 12 teams.(One player was in a class by herself) Teresa and Sue came in 1st with four other teams tied for second. One person, thinking their team had no chance, left early (big mistake) and missed out in the four-way playoff and a chance for 2nd place. Like the great baseball legend Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” This holds true for our doubles tournament as well. There was no runaway team; the competition was close till the very end. After the dust settled and the tally was counted, 2nd was captured by Doug and Linda, and third was claimed by the solo team of Val. With only one man in the top three winning teams, the results show that women can compete along side men and kick some serious butt as well! Everyone had a great time so plan on joining us next month on the 3rd Friday, August 20th, 2004. The action starts at 7:30 pm sharp. That’s it for this month.

We’re all about Fun!

Cascade Pool League Plans An Exciting Year Of BCA Play The recent upheaval over the sale of the national BCA league system has left a lot of players uncertain about the future of BCA leagues this year. Portland’s Cascade Pool League President Andrew Monstis took a lot of time at the May BCA Nationals in Las Vegas to attend BCA Pool Leagues (BCA) and American CueSports Alliance (ACS) to study the options. He presented his findings to his league team captains, players and to the regional association board. His diligence was appreciated not only by players from his own league but from all over the northwest. CPL is BCA All The Way The consensus among Cascade Pool League captains and players was to offer more of the same great BCA-sanctioned pool divisions this year through sanctioning with the BCA Pool Leagues. CPL, already BCAsanctioned for six years, will be a major BCA pool presence in the greater Portland area as it enters its seventh year. Western BCA Regional Tournaments The annual WBPPA regional events will continue to offer great fun in scotch doubles, singles and team events in both 8 and 9-ball. The 9-Ball event is November 3-7, 2004, followed by 8-Ball March 1-6, 2005. The Western BCA PoolPlayers Association, headed by league operators from all over Oregon, Washington and Idaho, is hard at work to bring BCA players the best tournaments ever. Under new leadership, the Western BCA has developed a great communications network, giving the entire association a voice. BCA players can visit the website (westernbca.org) and not only

learn the latest news, but contribute their own thoughts and ideas. The association looks forward to making the already exciting BCA Regionals even better. National BCA Tournaments The new national BCA organization, The BCA Pool Leagues (playbca.com), promises to bring the same great league system to its players for the same $10 annual fee. Its new ownership has plans to bring more opportunities than ever to its membership. We are committed to helping BCA Pool Leagues build the finest pool league system available. The 9Ball National event is back! November 16-21, 2004 at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The 29th Annual 8-Ball National Championships are set at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Vegas May 13-21, 2005. Dual-Sanctioning Cascade Pool League has had one of its divisions dualsanctioned for years with the Valley National Eightball Association (VNEA). This has given players the option to play on one night and qualify for both BCA and VNEA. It will continue to offer players another opportunity to play at the national and international level. This year is VNEA’s 25th anniversary. They host the longest-running international tournament event in the world in Las Vegas in late May and have a great one planned for 2005. CPL will consider dual-sanctioning with other leagues as the call arises. CPL Divisions CPL has BCA traveling and in-house divisions playing on Thursdays, and multi-sanctioning with VNEA playing on Wednesdays. We have summer sessions going now, and 8-Ball teams will start September 9th and 16th and will continue through January 13th. Our CPL 5-week Interdivisional Tournament will be a ‘prizes and surprises’ event. Our 8-ball session-end Awards Party February 19th promises to be a blast, as always. We will offer spring sessions of 9-ball, both team and scotch doubles, to close out our pool year. Captains/Players Meeting August 28th Thanks to the participation, support and input of our members, our league offers great fun and experiences to remember for a lifetime. CPL is a community – family — of friends …a league that is more than just showing up to qualify for regional and national events. CPL’s annual captain and player meeting is 11 am on August 28th at Clamity Jae’s on 107th and SE Halsey. Players discuss and vote on policy, fees, awards, payouts and any other issues that come up. All players are paid back by individual point accrual. New teams and players are encouraged to attend! It’s time to put together teams for fall and play some pool! From The Work Bench by: Pat Sheehan See Ad Page 13 Since I have been writing “From The Work Bench” the inquiries for additional information has come from the most unusual places. For a long time there was no response. I thought I was wasting my time, but the past few months have brought response from all over the U.S. The website reaches interested players and buyers all over the World making “The Break” a great educational and sales tool. One article Pat Sheehan I wrote last year has attracted the most attention and results in two to three calls a week. The subject was a request from Cheese on the Keno Board. In the 50’s I was kept busy making Keno Boards for 5 x 10 Carom Table, the game of Billiards played with three balls on a table with no pockets. After the 70’s this game lost it’s popularity and Keno came to save the billiard rooms with these tables. It was very popular and made the room owners lots of money. During the 1980’s most of the rooms closed down because of the rents in the down town locations. Keno died with the rooms and the rack man. A few of the players have remembered the fun they had playing the game and I guess that I am the only one of the manufacturers that still makes the boards. My first sale was to Cheese Akerlow but he didn’t remember the rules. The second one happened on the 4th of July weekend, which I had decided to take off. Saturday morning the phone rang, “Hi, I am Sam and I have been following your articles on the net. I want a 4 ½ x 9 board for a party next Saturday and I live in Massachusetts.” The only 4 ½ x 9 board was an old one from the 20’s and I spent the weekend getting it ready. Sam had the board for this party and another one that Max attended and played. Max called and is ready for one for Baltimore. I have had calls from Georgia, Texas and points East. Everyone wanted rules so here they are for a pool table. Since there really weren’t a fixed set of rules her they are by Pat Sheehan:

The board consists of a series of holes with numbers and stars. Here in Portland three of the holes had special values. In the second row which repeats 2 – 7- 12, the center hole (#7 has a hole with three ($$$) signs. The third row which repeats 13 – 3 – 8, one of the #8’s has a single ($) sign and a #3 has a single ($) sign. A value is assigned to the winner of the game (most points) and each Keno marker (hickey) has a smaller value. Let’s rackem and play. Object balls are racked on the foot spot. The Board and the cue ball are at the head of the table. The cue ball may be placed anywhere behind the head string. The balls are broken and if an object ball goes into the center star hole the game is over. The shooter gets three times the value of a hickey and the price of the game. Balls are re-racked and winner breaks. If the star is not made on the break the game continues. Any ball going into and resting in a hole scores the value of the hole. The 15-Ball in the 1 hole scores 1. The 1-Ball in the 15 hole scores 15. The 15Ball in the 15 hole scores 30 and 1 hickey. It is a Keno as with any ball going into the number hole that is the same as the number on the ball scores double and get a hickey. All object balls shot onto the board remain. These (sleepers) and any ball knocked out of a hole and going into another hole scores for the shooter. If the cue ball remains on the board it is placed behind the head string and no score is counted, but the object balls remain. Object balls may be shot directly onto the board or banked. If an object ball goes into a pocket it is respotted on the foot spot or as close to it in a line going to the foot rail. If the cue ball goes into a pocket it is placed behind the head string and no score is counted, object balls remain on the board. Any object ball going into the center star hole after the break scores three times the value of the ball and 3 hickeys. (Keno Board continued on page 28)

McQ’s Summer Jam Tests Endurance and Skill SPOKANE, WA On July 17 th & 18 th McQ’s Billiards hosted our 2 nd Summer Jam Tournament. The events included 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 141, One Pocket and a youth tournament for anyone under the age of 21. Out of a possible 112 spots 97 were sold, and the event proved to be very grueling for myself and the players. Without the help from Nita I would have gone crazy. After a 16 hour day on Saturday all the events were set up pretty good for the returning players on Sunday. All of the events were over by 6:00 pm Sunday and most of the players had a great time. There were a couple of upset players about the length of waiting time between matches but hey, what’s new. The youth tournament was very fun and entertaining to watch and all the kids are champions. I will plan another one next year but I may need to shorten the races on the B-side in the 9-Ball and 8-Ball to speed it up on Saturday. Thank you very much to all that played and thanks again to Nita for all your help. Remember the Spokane 9-Ball Open Labor Day weekend.

Pool On TV

Pro-Celebrity Pool

For the first seven months of 2004 there has been a significant increase in the airing of pool on television. In 2003 there was a moderate increase. We started listing in “The Break” from the first issue (October 2000) “Pool On TV”. In that issue there were only eight times that you could watch pool on TV in the month of October. And for the next two years there were moderate increases and fluctuations of three to four each month until 2003. I have talked to many players and heard many comments on how much the players like to see pool on TV. They’ve told me that they’ve cut the TV listings out of the paper and put it with their remote, even downloading the listings from our site www.onthebreaknews.com. In August again, there are thirty-two listings to watch. The irony of all this is that, it is pretty much what was on last month and the month before that, etc., etc. They would air tapings of Trick Shot Magic’s from 2003 and 2002 over and over again, the first two semis and finals of the WPBA Championships and tapings from Las Vegas with the BCA Open. Now please don’t misunderstand me, I think the airing of pool is a huge step for players and fans alike and we promote it in “The Break” every month, but the repetition and even the monotony of the same event being shown week in and week out become tiring, watching the same people do the same thing time after time. I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining without a solution or at least without a scenario that may work. Perhaps the filming of other events like the Reno Open, the Bar Table Championships, the Derby City Classic and other long time events. We are coming to the part of the year that we will see new airings of the same events from last year and the year before. The Trick Shots, Challenge of Champions, new WPBA events and what they’ve added now is the US Open 9-Ball Championships. Something new to look forward to, to see different faces playing familiar faces in this publishers opinion would enhance our sport with productivity and growth. I enjoy hearing from everyone so if you have any comments regarding the editorial, feel free to send them to: otbnews@aol.com or mail to: P O Box 100, Three Forks, MT 59752.

2005 State Games of America From: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

Colorado Springs, CO. - Colorado Springs will continue its tradition of hosting national sporting events when it welcomes the State Games of America in 2005 and 2007. The National Congress of State Games (NCSG) Board of Directors awarded the State Games of America bid to the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation in April and, for the first time, billiards will be a featured sport. The 2005 national competition will run concurrent to the Colorado Rocky Mountain State Games and feature individual medal disciplines in five divisions: Juniors (age 18 & under), Men’s Open (age 19-54), Women’s Open (age 19-49), Men’s Seniors (age 55+) and Women’s Seniors (age 50+). All divisions will compete on 7-foot tables using the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) world-standardized rules. The State Games of America is an elite grassroots multi-sport festival that is the culmination of the 49 State Games events across the country. Held every two years, the State Games of America began in St. Louis in 1999. It was created to bring State Games competition to the next level in a national forum featuring the top athletes from each State Games event. You do not need to be affiliated with any billiard organization in order to participate. For more information on the 2005 State Games of America, visit the State Games website: www.stategames.org. How To Spray

Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

Stand at the side pocket and point the can at a far corner. Hold the can about 2 feet off table. When you begin to spray, have the nozzle of the can pointed slightly off the table. Sometimes an aerosol can will sputter a glob just as you begin to spray. By pointing the can off the table it prevents globs from landing on the table. I will talk about the can spitting and sputtering at the end. FULLY depress the nozzle and immediately start a SMOOTH sweeping motion down the length of the table. When you get to the end just make a SMOOTH turn and come back down the table closer to the center. The inside edge of the spray should be at least touching the center of the table. Two more SMOOTH passes and you’re done. Do not shake can while spraying Squeeze the trigger tightly SMOOTH and steady is the trick Watch where the mist hits the cloth . This will make it easy to tell how much spray you are using and whether you are applying an even coat. When you start to spray, aim the far edge of the spray at the cloth on the railings, this gives you just enough over spray to wipe off the edges of the table. By using some footwork it will also help with the SMOOTHNESS. I take a step left and right to help me spray the length of the table. I also move away from the table, as the spray pattern gets closer to me. Hold the can at the same height off table while making all the passes Four passes on a nine-foot table works the best. The height that you hold the can off the table adjusts the width of the spray pattern. The higher that you hold it the wider the spray pattern. Wipe the playing surface first than wipe the railings. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU WIPE THE TABLE OFF IN 60 SECONDS.

Canada’s Alex Pagulayan, a runner-up last year, is the 2004 Taiwan World Pool Champion after a marvellous come from behind 17 – 13 victory over local hope Pei-wei Chang. Pagulayan, who trailed 10 – 4 at one stage, put in a superb performance as he came on strong down the home straight to get the better of Chang. Chang, who was an unfancied player from a country that boasts the likes of Chao, Yang and Hsia, looked good in the early stages as he made the most of a solid break and some positive potting. Pagulayan, was patient though as he sat in his chair and waited for his chance. That came when he was 13 – 11 down and Chang played too loose a push out shot from which Pagulayan pocketed the 1 ball. From there he gained the momentum he needed and reeled off the next six racks to take the title and with it a cheque for $75,000. “This is my first beer in two weeks,” he smiled at his post-match press Alex Pagulayan conference. “The best beer I’ve ever had. The TV break before the last rack felt like an hour - I wanted to get it over with, I couldn’t take any more pressure! This was the game I’ve been waiting to win my whole life. I couldn’t sleep at all last night, I was thinking about Pei-Wei all the time,” said the effervescent FilipinoCanadian before adding dryly, “Well, he’s so good-looking!” “I was in the zone in the semi-final but felt like something was missing at the start. All my good friends had been saying, ‘You’re going to win’ so that was extra pressure. I was cold and I needed to get in stroke. It didn’t happen until 11-5. It feels twice as good to win from behind, picking off racks like cherries one at a time. I wasn’t getting any luck on the break early on so I switched to the soft break when I was 11-7 down. I just had to change something, but once I’d started to make a few run-outs, I went back to the hard break, because soft breaking is bad TV I didn’t want people saying I won because of it. The key shot was Pei-Wei’s miss on the 2-ball when he was up 11-7. I was thinking, ‘Punish him, punish him.’ From there I got it to 11-11 but missed an easy 2-ball and I wanted to kill myself… with a shotgun so it would be over quick!” Asked about what he plans to spend his $75,000 first prize, Pagulayan joked, “Are there any casinos round here?” before admitting that he would use $30,000 dollars to clear debts. “I actually had a large side bet on myself to win the event,” he added. “I’d practised so hard, did not drink at all and I felt that after reaching the final last year, this was my time.” Pagulayan had defeated four Chinese Taipei players in the knockout phase, and placed them second-only to the Filipinos as the most dangerous players in the world. His defeated opponent Chang was disappointed but said he was pleased to reach the final. Chang was delighted with his $35,000 prize and was already making plans to open up a new business and make a downpayment on a house.” OTB

18. Throughout most of the 1800’s, the chalk used on the new leather cue tips was carbonate of lime, better known as blackboard chalk. 19. Most chalk used today is comprised of fine abrasives and does not contain a speck of chalk. 20. The Church has long been a part of billiard history. From its earliest days, the game was often denounced as a sinful, dangerous, morally corrupt activity. In 15th century France, billiards play was forbidden, by the Church, as well as the King. In early American history, actual laws were passed (thanks to religious influences), outlawing the game in many parts of the land.

number of strong players. By Saturday night there were just eight players left. Kim Gates and Jackie Fitchner on the “A” side and Cindy Doty, Deby Welfringer, Shari Ross, Trish Lee, Linda Carter and Martha Hartsell on the “B” side. Kim Gates easily moved Jackie to the “B” side with a 7-2 victory. Jackie was forced to wait to see who would challenge her for the chance to play in the final. But Jackie was not going to allow anyone to take the prospect of a Kim Gates rematch away from her. Deby Welfringer, who played this tournament with determination and confidence made her way to Jackie by defeating Shari Ross 7-6, Julie Valdez 7-0, then losing to Kim Gates 7-6 and continuing thru the B Side defeating Melanie Elder 7-5, Shari Ross 7-5, Cindy Doty 7-6 and Martha Hartsell 7-3. Jackie Fitchner finally knocked her out of the tournament with a 7-2 win. Jackie showed the players that she came to capture both her first NWPA win and her first trip to a pro event by defeating Andy Ruth 7-3, Vikkie Knutson 7-2, Kim Jones 7-5 Cindy Doty 7-2, then losing to Kim Gates 7-2. Kim Gates, a veteran player on this tour, also had her eyes set on the prize. Her road to the winners bracket hot seat included wins over Amy Chai-Claassen 7-2, Donna Totten 7-2, Deby Welfringer 7-6, Linda Carter 7-5 and Jackie Fitchner 7-2. Everyone was on the edge of their seats as Kim easily took the lead 6-2 in the single race to 9 final. Jackie however, regained her confidence — and her focus – tying the match at 7-7. Kim took the hill first and had a shot on the 9 to win the match. But she missed, leaving Jackie a fairly tough shot requiring the bridge to bring it to hill-hill. Jackie then played tough with lots of determination and came out victorious. Jeff Barker, a reporter from the Seattle Post Intelligencer covered the event on Sunday too. He interviewed some of the veteran players as well as some newer players that have joined our tour over the last couple of years. We’d like to thank all the managers of Jillian’s for hosting this event as well as their tremendous staff. We received tremendous assistance and great service.

21. The first 18.2 Balkline Championship was held in Paris, in 1913. It will probably be the only world championship in history ever decided by the courts. After six days of play, three contestants were tied for the first place. When a tie-breaking playoff was suggested, Maurice Vignaux, the French champion and notorious whiner when things weren’t going his way, scoffed at the suggestion. He insisted the title should be awarded based on the highest overall average (which he, of course, had at the time). Vignaux refused to continue, and the matter wound up in the French courts. (Which, of course, awarded Vignaux, their countryman, the title, after a delay of more than two months). 22. No one knows exactly who, when or where the first billiard table was built. The earliest documented record of a billiard table was made in 1470. In an inventory of the possessions of King Louis XI of France, his table was said to have contained the following: a bed of stone, a cloth covering, and a hole in the middle of the playing field, into which balls could be driven.

Nick Nikolaidis breaks his own Guiness World Record

“Guinness record holder shoots to break his own mark for charity.” Montreal’s Nick Nikolaidis has broken his Guinness World Record for the most pool balls sunk in 24 hours during a $5000 fundraiser for the Foundation For Research Into Children’s Diseases. The task was a daunting one. His previous record (16,723 balls) is the equivalent of sinking an average of one rack of 15 balls every minute and 15 seconds for 24 hours non-stop! Anyone who plays pool knows how difficult it is just to sink one rack in that time let alone continuously for 24 hours straight. Now he has surpassed that number by 369 balls for an outstanding 17,092 balls! BCA Pool League Update Grassroots support for the BCA Pool League remains strong and growing. League sanctions have been sent at a gratifying pace, and state associations and Canadian charters have rallied to the wishes of their players with visible signs of support for BCA. State associations — Since we assumed the management of the BCA leagues on June 1, every state that has voted on whether to continue affiliation with BCA Pool Leagues has voted YES! That’s right — Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Oklahoma and Wisconsin have all reaffirmed their affiliation with BCA Pool Leagues in recent weeks. Canadian BCA — A new Canadian BCA association has been launched to conduct the BCA Canadian Championships for 2005 and beyond, and the future for BCA affiliated leagues is brighter than ever in Canada. Look for details on the Canadian Championships soon. BCA national office — Staff orientation and training has been completed in Colorado Springs and the transition of the BCA Pool League national office to new headquarters in Las Vegas will be complete next week. The routine distribution of league materials began two weeks ago, and a new membership card program personalizes each card with the member name and membership number. Your new five person BCA Pool League staff has been diligent in bringing the national office up to speed. Please check our web site (www.playbca.com) for contact information updates when we can be of further service. OTB

Keeping in the Family By: Pat Sheehan

Very few things in our throwaway society stay in the family. Homes change; TV sets, VCRs, computers, cars and most furniture are discarded. One thing that lasts and is passed on from father to son or daughter is the family pool table. In the 55 years that I have been in this business I have seen tables pass down the generations. Last month this really came true. In the past few months articles I have mentioned a few of these tables but I thought that it might be worth a full story. I had just finished a table for Phil Scally that had been in his family since Phil was a boy. Dad bought it for their home in Philadelphia. Since Phil has had the table it has gone with him all over the U.S. When we finished the table and shipped it to Bloomington, IL, it hadn’t looked so good since it left the Brunswick Factory in the early 1900’s. The phone rang and Lestley Palmer asked me about shipping her father’s table to his grandson on Nantucket Island clear across the U.S. Crating a table and shipping it this distance is a very expensive undertaking, but I could see why. Grandma had saved all the pictures of little Max Ross standing at the table with Great Grandfather, too small to use a cue but good at throwing the balls into the pockets. Grandpa is showing Max how to hold a cue. I am sure that the table could be sold and the freight saved. A new table could be purchased but what would you do with all the memories? I sold the table to Max’s Grandfather in 1974 and built it to last the years and they had taken excellent care, brushing and putting the dust cover on after each use. The table was just like it left our plant 30 years ago. Still played great with the Manhattan cushions that I used in those years. It’s a Sheehan Regent and is built to last 100 + years. So it is up to Max to keep it and pass it on. I always sign the table so someone years from now will wonder just who was this Pat Sheehan. H.B. Close signed every table that left the Portland office in the early 1900’s that Brunswick maintained. I almost felt that I knew him though he was gone years before. It has been awhile since I crated a table for this long a trip in a freight truck and boat and all my old suppliers were out of business, but I had a chance to meet Dama Johnson at Carton Service. She helped me find just the right stuff in cardboard. I had a 6” x 30” piece of cardboard left over after all the pieces were put in their containers. Since I don’t have a forklift we built the heavy slate crate to fit the 1” x 46 x 92 slate in the back of the pick-up. 1 x 6 and 1 x 4 with 4 x 4 risers made a crate for all 3 pieces. The next day it was on a Yellow Freight Truck and heading to Massachusetts to be delivered and installed by ferryboat to the Island. The original invoice and pictures of Great Grandfather and Grandfather are going with a copy of this article to be saved for the next generation. The next week Ron Harris called to move the table from his Father’s house in Gresham to Ron’s ranch in the high desert; a short way from (Keeping in the Family continued on page 29)

There’s An Old Game Made New In Town Part II (continued from front page)

In the singles playoffs Jeff Jeminize took top honors by winning $500 in which he played excellent pool. His entry was paid into Shotze’s next big weekend tournament which was the Memorial Weekend tournament in which he also placed. Each playoff winner of our league gets this as an additional incentive to win. If you are tired of playing season after season in leagues that only guarantee you money back if you win a game and you are looking to expand your pool knowledge then this is the league you need to join. Out of the (30) members (28) played in the singles playoffs of which all (28) players received money for just competing and those unfortunate to lose their first (2) matches received $75. How many other leagues out there give money back for losing out your first (2) matches?? This league consists of (14) weeks of play and then a (2) day playoff. Each member pays a $20 entry fee and then $10 per week. There is also a 9ball break pot which Shotze’s starts with $100. Each ticket costs $1 each and (3) tickets are drawn nightly to give lucky players a chance to break the 9-ball for ticket #1 = 100% of the pot, #2 = 50% of the first and #3 = 50% of the second ticket. Once money is won for that night then no more tickets are drawn until the following week. This last season the pot was won twice by Dave E for $156 and Andy W for $101. The final pot was divided into individual envelopes in which players who participated in the 9ball pot were able to draw for additional money when they lost out of the singles tournament. Our next league meeting is August 30th at 7pm and league will start again on September 13th. If you have a team of (3) or (4) interested, please come. If you don’t have a team, but are still interested, come on in anyway. We will put you on a team. This is a singles league and how your team does, has no bearing on the money payouts. Individuals win $1 per game won (9 or 12 games per night), and an additional $1 for each nine ball break during the season. Small cash prizes to the top (5) players and with (40) we will make that the top (8) players. And then the mystery 9-ball break envelopes and every player participating in the singles playoffs will receive money. With (40) players we could be looking at $100 after (2) matches to first place making $750. That would be great. We only hold (2) seasons a year with the following starting the end of January 2005. If you have any questions please contact Ford at Shotze’s (355-5766) or join us on August 30th.

British Wheelchair PoolPlayers Association from: Ted Bristow, President - BPPPA (British Professional PoolPlayers Association)

We are pleased to announce that the BPPPA and the English Wheelchair PoolPlayers Association (EWPPA) have reached an agreement and, with immediate effect, the EWPPA will merge and become an integral part of the BPPPA. The EWPPA will be renamed as the British Wheelchair PoolPlayers Association (BWPPA). The BPPPA, as the governing body in Great Britain for American pool disciplines, will be the main council for the BWPPA and all members of the BWPPA will automatically become members of the BPPPA. The BPPPA will organise tournaments for the BWPPA and BPPPA personnel will personally oversee these Tournaments. We have agreed that in the first year we will hold four wheelchair ranking events (to establish who will play in the European Championships next year) and these Tournaments will commence in Leicester in November. It has been agreed that the BWPPA will have its own council comprising of a Chairman and two player representatives. In the first year Roy Kimberley, who has been appointed Chairman, will also take a seat on the BPPPA Board whenever wheelchair issues need to be addressed. The BPPPA feel this merger is a unique step forward in uniting British pool and we now welcome wheelchair players to participate from Scotland and Wales as well as England. The BPPPA is extremely pleased about the merger as we can now concentrate on our wheelchair policy, taking the sport forward and in giving it proper direction. We are sure the newly formed BWPPA will benefit from this and will have the advantage of not only being part of the BPPPA but can also share our resources in the future. OTB

Canadian BCA Ready to Rock! The future of BCA Pool Leagues in Canada is assured by the launch of Canadian BCA Pool Leagues — chartered to conduct the Canadian BCA Pool League Championships and to represent the BCA community of players and league operators across Canada. As of July 26th, the new Canadian BCA Pool League has received from BCA league operators the commitment of more than 7,000 members for the upcoming 2004/2005 season. Once submissions are received from all BCA leagues, the BCA membership in Canada will reach an all-time high. The 2005 Canadian BCA Pool League Championships are slated for July 6 to 10,2005 at the Winnipeg Convention Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The event will feature an anticipated $150,000 prize fund, plus a guaranteed $40,000 added. “We are pleased that our members in Canada will have a true national Canadian BCA championships and we look forward to developing more Canadian BCA events in the future. Our goal is to create and improve opportunities for pool players of all abilities through fair governance and equitable policies,” said Mark Griffin, CEO of BCA Pool League. “We believe that our inaugural Canadian BCA championships will be the largest and finest BCA event ever held outside of the U.S.” said Shaun Pilfold, Director of Canadian BCA Pool Leagues. All sanctioned Canadian BCA Pool League players and league members who qualify during the 2004/2005 league year will be eligible to compete in the 8-Ball Singles and Scotch Doubles events, as well as 8-Ball Team competition. The Team and Singles will offer Ladies and Men’s events with multiple skill divisions in each. Pre-registration will be through your local BCA league operator. BCA Pool League members in Canada will continue to be governed from the BCA Pool League National Office, located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new Canadian BCA Pool Leagues will represent the interests of Canadian players on the BCA Pool League Advisory Committee and will help build interest in Canadian BCA events, as well as the annual BCA North American 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas and the BCA flagship event, the BCA National 8-Ball Championships in Las Vegas. Canadian BCA Pool Leagues can be reached at (204)233-7665. To sanction your Canadian BCA Pool League, go to www.playbca.com or call (866) 872-7665. OTB

shot he played. No trick is used, but the cue stick is elevated some for halfmasse. A final version is to place the cue ball up on the nameplate — Mizerak is said to have been 50-50 from up there. If you’re tired of practice drills, challenge shots can liven up your routine while developing specific shooting skills.

If you are playing on a coin table without the ball door open all pocketed balls will remain down. The game ends when the last ball remains on the board. The scored is totaled and the winner is the person with the greatest score. Each player is rewarded for his hickeys paid down the line by each other player. In the days when gambling was not permitted tokens were passed among the players (hickeys) and were exchanged for cash in private. The game was played and paid to the rack man after each game. Since many players played in each game, the rack man collected as much money off the Keno game as he did from all the other tables combined. It was not unusual for 15 players to be in the game. Sam had 14 in one of the games in Massachusetts. If you have any questions or would like to order a board please contact me 503-313-8646 or email my son at robertsheehan1@yahoo.com.

Current World Pool Masters champion Tony Drago claimed victory and the £1000 first prize at the Guildford Open on Sunday 4th July 2004 at Rileys Guildford, beating Lee Chenman 11-4 in the final. Tony was faced with t h e daunting task of overcoming a fired-up Chenman, who had Tony Drago battled his way through some very high quality players to earn his first-ever final appearance in a ranking event. Lee, who had overcome Mikey Kay, Stewart Colclough, Paul Medati and Martinho Correia leading up to the final, had difficulty finding his rhythm against Drago who was firing balls in at his customary ‘blink-and-you’ll-missit’ pace. Drago had cruised through the first day’s double elimination stage undefeated, but once into the straight knock-out on the second day did not have an easy run to the final. His first two games on Sunday were against Jay Trivedi and David Walsh, both top 5 players, and he had to come back from a 5-1 deficit against Mike Berry in the semi-final. The 9-7 result meant Berry got two racks closer to beating Drago than anyone else Bobby Lee had. However, Drago looked focused and ready to go against Chenman, reeling off rack after effortless rack. He had obviously been putting in a great deal of work on his break as he was getting that wonderful ‘pop’ that is the trademark of so many world class players. ‘The Tornado’ this week flies to Taipei for the World Pool Championships, where he will be hoping to get even further than the semi-final stage, which he achieved last year, and on the form he showed this weekend, he looks to have every chance. Finishing 3rd - 4th were Mike Berry and Martinho Correia. Martinho had spectators reaching for the oxygen and covering their eyes throughout Sunday as he battled through a series of thrilling matches that all seemed to end on the hill! He won 9 - 8 against Mark Stephenson and Wayne Lloyd, then went down 9 - 8 to Lee Chenman after scratching on the 7. Martinho may be the most consistent player in the country right now having had one quarter final, two semi finals, and one final in the last four events he has entered. Quarter-final finishers were Daryl Peach, Mike Rogers, Wayne Lloyd and Paul Medati. The rest of the last 16 were John Wims, Norman Kay, David Walsh, Gareth Esprit, Mark Stephenson, Dean Mazirel, Suk Gohil and Stewart Colclough. For the updated ranking list, visit the BPPPA website at http://www.bpppa.com.

Hermiston, Oregon. When we got to Dad’s old farmhouse we saw a stream of water pouring from a pump in the basement. There was still 6” of water on the basement floor but the pump was working away. It had been 50 years since my Dad and I and O’Neil Transfer moved the table from the Odd Fellows Lodge in Boring to set it up for the Harris’ Family. Now it was a wreck. Many coats of Red Varnish had been applied to it at the Odd Fellows Clubroom but you could see the rails were East Indian Rosewood missing some veneer and Ivory sights. The nameplate was gone. In the semi darkness of the dank room I could see that it was a Brunswick Makado, so I knew the frame would be quarter sawn brown English Oak. My pocketknife and some scratching proved the point. I asked Ron if it was going into a basement where it would never be seen – but it was going into his office where everyone passed and needed to be sharp. We agreed on a price and went to work. One week and many man-hours later a beautiful piece of furniture began to take shape from the ghastly figure we saw in the basement. As soon as the legs began to dry they blew apart. We could never re-glue them so we saved the top and bottom and rebuilt the core with 6/4 Poplar.

(continued from page 23)

We use 1/8” Quarter Sawn Oak skins and replaced the 3/8” x ½” trim molding that makes it a Makado instead of an Aviator. With a little magic and 30 coats of Orange Shelac, the French polish, and everything matched. Now the table looked like it spent 92 years in a Museum instead of Hell. Three weeks after we took the table from the basement we were off to the Harris Ranch. Talk about the middle of nowhere. Ron has a Boardman phone number, an Ione address and his drive is a side road on the way to Hermiston. 400 acres of the most beautiful fields of hay, alfalfa, wheat and Angus beef, grown in 113 degree temperatures with a lot of help from the Columbia River 460 feet below. I wouldn’t want to exchange electric bills with Ron, a retired Fire Chief from Portland for his $5,200 a month bill to pump the free water. He is not a fan of Enron. In the past year we have moved or restored nine tables that were passed on to the next generation. Two of them I may never see again. The other six, The Men of the Cloth will see in the future and the history goes on. These are truly the best investment a family can ever make. If you are thinking about purchasing a table, be sure to pick one that will last so the stories can be passed on. OTB
