Portland Area BCAPL Pool Leagues Get Ready To Rumble

Cascade’s fall/winter 8-ball session begins Thursday, September 13th, with both traveling and in-house divisions, comprising the largest BCA league in the greater Metropolitan Portland area. Over 300 people in the Portland, OR area say its playing with Cascade Pool League, playing with their friends and family over the years at loyal sponsor locations, playing to qualify for great BCA regional and national tournaments, playing in league tournaments, having great session end awards parties where they can take home oodles of prizes, even a trip to Hawaii... Cascade is celebrating 10 years in the community, with divisions all over Portland’s east side, Troutdale, Gresham and Oregon City. Cascade has had several requests to start up new divisions as well and is working on an expansion plan. Try Some Straight Pool

San Francisco Billiard Academy (reprinted from April 2006) When I was first learning to play, I was exposed to a bunch of different games. Nine ball, six ball, partners rotation, one pocket, snooker, golf on the snooker table, 3-cushion and several other games were all commonly played in that poolroom. I think each of those games contributed to my learning process. First among all of the games was straight pool. It was the game everyone played at least some of the time and that most of the better players preferred. The basic rules are simple: call any ball and any pocket and shoot it in. You get one point for each ball pocketed on such a shot. When only one object ball is left on the table, the other 14 — that’s where the other name 14.1 comes from — come back up on the table. A match is played to a certain number of points such as 50 or 150. Bob Jewett Players quickly learn to leave that last ball in a good position to break the next rack. They also learn to leave a ball called the “key” ball in a position to easily get a perfect position on the break ball. In the diagram is a position with five balls remaining. Can you see a good way to get four of them off the table and end up with a way to break the new rack? (The rack area is shaded in). The answer is a little further down. Straight pool is an excellent way to learn skills useful in other games. When the balls are pretty well apart but still clustered in the rack area, you need precise control of the cue ball to maneuver through the balls without bumping into balls and knocking them into clusters. Breaking clusters is another important skill, and you will learn how to play position for shots that easily send the cue ball into those clusters, how not to send clustered balls clear to the other end of the table where you’ll have to chase them down, and how to play position on a ball even when you’re a little unsure of where the cue ball will go after the break-out. Have you had a chance to think aboutt the diagram? Here’s a hint you should be able to find a pattern that doesn’t require you to hit a cushion, but that pattern is little easier if you do use a cushion or two. From a fan’s perspective, straight pool has the nice feature of allowing statistics. The main ones are high runs and average number of balls per inning. High runs — consecutive balls pocketed without a miss — correspond to roughly these levels of players: Beginner: has never run a rack (14), C player has run 20, B player has run 50, A player has run 100, semi-pro has run 150, pro has run 200, champion has run 300. If you want to go for the record, Willie Mosconi ran 526 in an exhibition in 1954. That’s over 37 complete racks. The highest run in competition was 182 by Joe Procita. At the recent Derby City Classic, the high run in the 14.1 competition was 139 by Danny Harriman, and there were 7 other runs of 100 or more.

The game is easy to handicap by requiring the better player to go to a higher score to win. I play in a handicapped straight pool league with a wide variety of skill levels. The largest spot I’ve had to give was 14020, which means that if my opponent makes two balls, I have to run a rack to stay even with the spot. For more information on how to play — strategy, safety, rules, history and insights — there are several good books on the market. Willie Mosconi’s “On Pocket Billiards” from 1948 is still in print. Babe Cranfield, who ran 768 in practice, wrote the “Straight Pool Bible.” Phil Capelle’s “Play Your Best Straight Pool” is a very thorough treatment. George Fels and Robert Byrne also have large sections about 14.1 in their books. OK, you’ve had enough time to solve the problem. If the only balls on the table were the one ball and the cue ball, you would be in a great position to break. How can you get to that position? The first thing to notice is that the 2 ball is close to where you would like the cue ball to end up. Leave it for last. A way to get through the balls without hitting a cushion is to play the nine with stun (that means no draw or follow on the cue ball), scooting over for a straight shot on the 10. A little draw on the 10 leaves you a slight angle on the 4 so another stun shot will move the cue ball towards the 2 ball. The goal is to leave the cue ball roughly on the line from A to the 1 ball so the shot is not too hard but there will be plenty of energy in the cue ball to break the rack. Do you see where you can use the cushion to make your life easier? If you keep some angle on the shot for the 10 ball, you can go to the side cushion and bounce out for the 4 ball. That’s much easier than getting perfectly straight on the 10. Also, while getting straight shape on the 2 ball will work, if you get a little above it, so that you are shooting from roughly along the B-2 line, you can come off the side cushion and roll to the original location of the cue ball. Another good pattern is 9, 4 withdraw, 10 and bounce off the cushion and then the 2 ball. This second pattern gets a good angle on the 2 ball more easily, but you have to be accurate on the 4-ball position. Try some straight pool. It’s a great game itself, and it will help your other games.

I have been seeing a lot of tables by Brunswick in the transition days from their own manufacture and the idea of having out side contractors do their tables. In the 80’s, they had a flood in the Virginia plants that destroyed the factories in Marion and they felt that it would not be wise to rebuild. They continued selling tables but from the mid 70' s until the mid 80’s when they withdrew from the billiard industry, quality went downhill. The first table to draw my attention was from Eric Johnson in Kennewick, Washington. Eric had a Heritage made in this period. He had tried to fix it himself but was unhappy with what he got when in bought it and found that it was impossible to make it right. Eric had been a faithful reader of “From the Work Bench” but the table was so far out of whack that he was unable to make it work. Other “experts” had given him advice and the combination was a disaster. The table was made to take K66 rubber but the tip was set at 1 3/4” high so the balls would not bounce. His friends suggested to use contact cement so as I pulled the cloth off, the rubber fell off one rail and the rest held only in spots.

They had the cutouts for the nut plates and he had attempted to add spacers to the end of the rails but missed on the angle so the balls would not go into the pockets if there was any speed. The setting strip and rubber measured 2 1/4" so I added the correct pocket closers at 7 degrees and filled the nut plates. They went through the saw at 24.5 degrees and took the extra 1/4" off. I had to play around with the setting until I was happy and then jointed off the top of the setting strip to make the rubber feel right. I soaked the pockets in neetsfoot conditioner and replaced several nets and packed up the entire set and headed to Kennewick. It was a long trip for just one table but there were a lot of problems with the surface of the slate so he wanted me to take care of the entire job. The groves in the slate were so deep that the balls would follow them through the Simonis bed cloth. We filled the surface of the slate with a combination of plaster of paris with olofactic glue and sanded it with a 6 ft Straight edge with 6 ft sandpaper until the surface was like glass and sprayed it with Shelac to seal it. After taking out all the sag in the frame I was sure that it would be

flat but did not notice that the last 8" of slate were low going to the pocket, and as luck would have it Eric found it right away. Both Eric and his wife play a lot of pool and both showed me the best time on our visit. I hope that they both are enjoying that table. The next transition table was a Gold Crown III from Arizona and it was the same story. K66 rubber set at 1 3/4 “ bare nut plate holes and 2 1/4“ cushion tip to back of rail. I have redone many GCIII but never saw one with these specs. Now of course Brunswick manufactures nothing of their own but the engineers are checking things very closely. At its recent meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the 2007 ACS Nationals, the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) elected new officers to one-year terms. Cecil Messer (Portage, IN) was elected to a new two-year term as Director of Referees by the members and was re-elected to the Presidency by the new board of directors. Mike Wilson (Norfolk, VA) of Southern Amusement Pool League was elected Vice President; Julie Ann Mitchell (Portage, IN) representing Indiana ACS was elected Secretary; and Ray Lambotte (Chicago, IL) representing Illinois ACS was elected Treasurer. Each officer serves a one-year term in each position. The ACS continues to build its membership base while expanding its alliance with other non-profit associations to guide United States cue sports towards a unified image and promotion of the sport. WWR at Garlic City

Gilroy, CA The Western Women’s Regional 9ball tour held their first event at Garlic City Billiards on the weekend of July 21 and 22. Owner Bob “Action Bob” Tapella included money to the pot as well as Easy Street Billiards owner Michael Stansbury (of Monterey, CA). Despite the 90-degree weather and the sauna-like conditions, there were 21 women in the field. Play began at noon on Saturday, with a race to seven format, double elimination. younger sister Mary defeated threetime tour champion Michelle 7-2. On Sunday, Michelle fought her way through the losers’ side, including matches with Revelina Morales and Lee Stansbury. Revelina met up with Mary in the quarterfinals and lost, and then Michelle defeated her 7-5 for a fourth place finish. Lee played against Mary and lost for the hot seat, and then met Michelle and lost for third place. Her father Michael, a sponsor, was awfully proud :). Tacoma, WA - Tacoma City Lights proudly hosted the 2nd Stop of the Rainier 9 Ball Tour, July 14th , the field again was full of champions, including Rafael Martinez, Paul Potier, Naoki Wakimoto, JD, Todd Marsh, Pete Semoe and many more, 25 Players in all showed up to compete for a $1500 total purse. The races were set to 9/9, BCA, cue ball foul only rules. From the start both Rafael Martinez and Paul Potier set the pace, Rafaels first match over Larry Davis took a record of 11 minutes for a (9-1) slaughter, also in Martinez bracket was Al Perez, who early showed why Oregon players live up to their name sakes, beating last tournament’s champion Todd Marsh in a hill-hill thriller (9-8). The bottom half was controlled all the way from Canada’s Paul Potier, But even early on He showed that He is still human, after being down to Miguel Morfin (6-4), He staged a comeback and beat Miguel (9-7) and easily cruised to the point giving his next match Bill Coats a shot finally in the sixth game to no avail beating Bill (9-2). Then Jason Evans out of Dr. Cue in Shoreline (9-4), Deo Alpajora (9-6) and Al Perez on the point throwing in the towel at 7-1, putting Paul to the point and Rafael in the B-side after a stunning loss to City Lights own Jay Siongco who soundly outplayed Martinez in a (9-7) victory, But even the outstanding win was short-lived by a hill-hill loss prepoint to Al Perez (9-8), sending Jay the 5th/6th matches. The B-side was run early on by Todd Marsh who had wins over Dan Golsby (9-6), Bill Coats (9-7), Junior Sardoncillo (9-6), Ed Hobbs (9-5), Naoki Wakimoto (9-3), Jay Siongco (9-5), only to suffer a loss to Rafael Martinez (3-9). Martinez was put on tilt after his loss to Jay Siongco and showed how strong he is sending Raul Abenojar home (9-3), JD (9-5), Deo (9-4), Todd Marsh (9-3), Al Perez who once again threw in the towel (9-2) setting up the championship to remember. Paradise Valley Pool League July 18th 2007 Glendale, AZ The Paradise Valley Pool League rapped up another great season by hosting it’s End Of Season 8-Ball singles tourney at the Northern Lounge on Wednesday night. 46 league members turned out to vie for the $725 in prize fund. The event was played on 5 Valley Bar tables and the format was BCA rules. There were no favorites coming out of the gate as a race to 2 games with loser breaks leaves the door open to all players. Working his way through the field was Tyson Cole. After starting with a BYE he notched wins over Autumn Blondell, Chris Shenker, Aaron Purdy, Tony Norem and Dennis Gresham for the Tyson Cole, Dennis “BBQ” Gresham hot seat. The other hot seat opponent was Dennis “BBQ” Gresham. His road to the right saw wins over Ivan Noriega, Pat Dicker, JD Wilkins, Steve Henderson, Virginia Jennings before his 1st loss to Tyson. The trip to the losers side would pit Dennis against Chris Shenker. Chris sent many players home on the left side of the board after his early loss to Tyson. Despite going to the 3rd game Dennis was able to get by Chris and earn a re-match for the title. Being a true double elimination format “BBQ” would have to defeat Tyson 2 sets to take 1st place. This one would go the distance as Tyson Chris Shenker remained undefeated the entire evening and earned the title of League Champion 2007. A tourney highlight was Virginia Jennings, top woman shooter in division B, run to the final 4 winners without dropping a singe game. What Are “THE FUNDAMENTALS”? By Roger Long, Certified Instructor, BCA, ACS Pappy’s Sports Bar, Phoenix, AZ

We probably hear the word fundamentals used more often in conjunction with sports than with most other activities. And in any given sport we are told that we must first learn the fundamentals before we can learn other facets of the game. And we often hear things said like, “He has gone back to working on his fundamentals.” But what, exactly, is meant by “the fundamentals”? I know that would depend on the chosen sport, but can you tell me what the fundamentals in pool are? When I stopped to ponder this question for myself one day, I realized that even I wasn’t able to properly answer it. I needed help. So I sought the course that I normally take in situations like this, which is to immediately run to my bookcase and get a dictionary. A quick check of my dictionary informed me that the words fundamental and basic mean the same thing. A lot of help that was! Basically speaking, I was still in the dark. So I then read the second definition for the word fundamental and was told that it is something that forms a foundation for other things to be built upon. That’s good, but it still didn’t answer the question; because if you was to apply that definition to the actual construction of a building, you would find yourself with truckloads of bricks, blocks, lumber and steel, but you wouldn’t know (unless you’re an architect) which should be used in the foundation of the building and which should be used in the upper levels. So then, still searching for help, I read down to a third definition that said fundamentals are those things that are “most important”. Now I knew I was getting somewhere! All that was left to figure out was: what are the most important things to remember in building a solid pool game? After considerable thought, I came up with a long list of things that I believed to be important in learning how to play Harry B Platis good pool. more than truckloads of building materials without any knowledge of where they should go. In other words, which ones should make up the foundation, and which ones should be reserved for the upper levels? So after even more thought and careful study, I pared my list down to only four essential things that I believe every player should employ on each and every shot. These four things (The Fundamentals) are: 1. Straight Alignment 2. Level Cue 3. Stay Down 4. Follow Through You probably noticed right away (being the well-focused reader you are) that my list didn’t include things you might have expected, like stance, grip, bridge, or stroke. Well, that’s because those things can vary greatly from great player to great player but they still don’t keep those players from playing great, so they must not be all that fundamental to great play. So I’ll now elaborate a little on each of my newly found fundamentals so that you will be able to better understand how they made it to my final list of “most” important. Straight Alignment. No player would intentionally line up their feet, head, hands and arms in such a way as to point their cue in some direction other than that in which they want the cue ball to travel. So make sure you’re lined up straight on every shot before shooting it. Level Cue. No matter which direction a player aims his cue stick the ball will swerve off of the line of aim if the player hits down on it. Not all shots can be hit with a perfectly level cue, however, but you should always hit every shot with the cue being as level as possible. Stay Down. Straight alignment and a level cue won’t mean squat unless everything is held in place until the cue ball is well on its way to its destination. Even the slightest body movement (other than the stroking arm moving straight forward) will pull the shot off line and cause you to miss. Follow Through. Stroke the tip all the way through the cue ball to ensure that the desired action is imparted to the cue ball. Some shots may require a short follow-through, while other shots may require a longer follow-through, but all shots require some sort of follow-through. Following through the cue ball also helps you to stay down on the shot. You can help yourself remember The Fundamentals by memorizing the following little poem. With straight alignment and a level cue, I will stay down and follow through. Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s cornball. But it works.

PORTLAND, OR Bob Zack beat Justin Lilje to win the July 1st Sunday of the Month Tournament at Sam’s Billiards.With only twelve players the tournament moved pretty quickly. The 3 groups of 4 seemed quite well balanced and from them emerged four strong players in the finals. Bob was consistent again, although he didn’t break any records with his high run of 43. Some problems with a couple of the tables may have held down the high runs. It was good to see Justin meet Bob in the finals instead of Bob Zack getting matched up with him in the qualifying rounds as he has the past couple of tournaments. Bob gave a few pointers about 1-pocket strategy to some of the players while waiting for his final match, which was well appreciated. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, with many saying they would be back for the next 1st Sunday of the Month Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s. The Monthly One Pocket and 9 Ball events were held July 7th and 8th respectively. The One Pocket event had 27 players with $270 added by Hard Times for a total prize fund of $810. Chris MacDonald went undefeated and won a tough George Michaels match over Tony Melendez in the finals. Perennial high finisher John Henderson took 3rd followed by the usual cash finishers in this event, Eric Krause, Bart Mahoney, Robert Aldana, Frank Nordmann and Jeff Gregory. The 9 Ball event had a good field of Northern California players. But it was a local player that won the hot seat match. Bart Mahoney went through the winners bracket undefeated with wins over Charles B., DJ, George V, Frank J (7th), Tony Melendez and a great Hill-Hill match against Billy Palmer (3rd). Billy Palmer took his trip on the winners bracket matches with wins over Trevor Smith, Robert Aldana, James Williams and Austin Murphy (4th) before losing to Mr. Mahoney. George Michaels, always a favorite to place high in these Monthly events, got wins over Dave Rodden, Chris MacDonald, Brian Silva before losing uncharacteristically to young gun Austin Murphy 6-0. On the one loss side George had to battle the short races with wins over Trevor Smith, Eric Krause (7th), Tony Melendez (5th), some revenge over Austin Murphy (4th) and then a squeaker against Billy Palmer (3rd). George Michaels had to defeat Bart Mahoney two sets to win the tournament and that is exactly what George did. Both sets were close, but George seemed to have the upper edge in the late rounds of this tournament. George as also won this event 3 out of the last 5 times he’s entered. Product Review: The Chameleon

Robert Tertel of RST2 International took time from his busy schedule to talk to me about The Chameleon. The rack is an ingenious design, which incorporates the racks for all games of pool into one. I asked Robert how he came up with the idea and he said, “I was sitting at pool leagues one night as I was staring at the back of a bar box table where the racks go in and it dawned on me how it would be neat to have an 8-ball and 9-ball rack that could convert over. Those are the two games that most people play. After pursuing the idea and talking to an engineer and getting things drawn out we decided to get the other features added to the rack and developed it on paper.” Robert sent me a Chameleon to try out. I was curious when it first arrived to see how it all worked. The rack has a durable plastic construction and the different pieces snap in or out for racking the balls. Besides the basic 8-Ball triangle, there is a 9-ball rack that swings into place, or you can use a bar that goes across the bottom of the rack to push up for a 10-ball rack. Besides that you also have the means to rack for 7-ball, 6-ball and 3-ball. It is truly an all purpose rack. I asked Robert about the time for the development process, since it is relatively new to the market it is always interesting to know how much time went into the developing stages for a product. He responded, “When it was all said and done it took a little over a year because we made prototypes. It went from one concept to another and we were fine-tuning it and always improving upon it. We got input from other people to help with the finetuning before we went into production. We made this rack so there is one rack for all games and you don’t have to go out and buy multiple racks. One of the things that Allen Hopkins likes about it is that it prevents your opponent from manipulating the rack.” What I liked about it is that I can see where I am placing the balls in the

rack. There is no guesswork about where the balls are in the rack. This makes racking easy and quick. If you’re in a match with time restraints, you are not wasting shooting time on racking. Robert chose the name Chameleon because, “As a chameleon changes its colors and adapts to the environment so does this rack since it can be used to play multiple games.” The solid construction of the rack in lightweight plastic makes it nearly indestructible. It is easy to use and stores either on a hook or in almost any slotted pool table. It is designed with the pool player in mind and can be used as easily in a pool hall or at home. The 2007 Junior National 9-Ball Championships has crowned the 2007 winners and was a huge success. Over 130 players representing 29 states and Ontario, Canada, demonstrated great talent throughout the week of July 12-15. This event was held in conjunction with the ACUI Collegiate 9-Ball Championships at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Nearly 350 people attended the Thursday evening banquet to welcome the junior players, to honor the winners of the ACUI event and to congratulate the 39 recipients of the 2007 Academic All-American Awards. Special guests at the dinner included reigning world artistic pool champion Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman, Jerry Briesath of “The Pool School,” and Shane Van Boening, 2007 World 10-Ball Champion. The evening ended with almost two hours of artistic pool entertainment from Dr. Cue and hours of challenge-the-pro matches. The competition kicked off on Thursday with players competing in four separate divisions. The 19 & under boys’ division saw Christopher Futrell matched up against Richard Barney in the finals. Christopher went undefeated through a field of 73 players. In the finals, Barney maintained his momentum with a win over Futrell 11-6 and captured the 2007 Junior National 9-Ball Championship title for the 19 & under boys’ division. The 14 & under boys’ division proved to be exciting as early round matches heated up. Landon Shuffett faced Behnke and exacted his revenge, winning 7-3 and thus earning his way for a chance to play the undefeated Newman. In this riveting match, the players traded

racks until the score was tied 8-8 in a race to 9. While both boys made an appearance at the table in the last game, Shuffett made good on a winning opportunity and dropped the final 9 ball to earn the title as 14 & under boys’ Junior National Champion. In the girls’ division, Mary Rakin was determined to make the 2007 Junior Nationals memorable, as it would be her last appearance in the junior ranks. She went out with a bang, losing only 7 games before reaching the finals. The final was sharply contested, but Rakin was able to seize the match by a score of 9-7, becoming the 2007 Junior National Champion for 19 & under girls’ division. Last but not least was the 14 & under girls’ division. Competing in her first Junior Nationals, 12-yearold Briana Miller was unstoppable and went undefeated through the winners’ bracket. Miller made her presence known, and it was evident that she wanted this title as she glided through the tournament, becoming the 14 & under girls’ Junior National Champion. Along with trophies and prizes, all

winners of the 4 divisions were given a $1,000 scholarship, a berth to represent the U.S. in the upcoming Junior World Championships. In addition, second-place finishers in all 4 divisions were given a $500 scholarship with second place in the boys’ divisions also earning an entry to the Junior World 9-Ball Championships. Mary Rakin will be defending her title as reigning Junior World 9-Ball Champion in the girls’ division November 27- 30 in Willingen, Germany. 2007 ACUI COLLEGE NATIONALS

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) ... recently announced its 2007 Collegiate International 9-Ball champions. Now in its 70th year, the i n t e r n a t i o n a l championship was hosted at Minnesota State University, Mankato, July 10-12, 2007, in conjunction with Eleanor Callado the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) Junior National Championships. Eleanor Callado, of San Francisco State University, made history this year in the women’s division as the only player ever to have snatched four ACUI titles (2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007), and California State University at Los

Angeles’ Andy McKinn held the top spot in the men’s division. Full results of the ACUI National Championship tournament are available online. The 30 male and 19 female players in the event represented over 600 collegiate contestants who vied for a shot at the international title by first winning their Andy McKinn campus championship and later finishing in the top tier at their regional championships. This was the third year that the ACUI Collegiate tournament took place alongside the Junior National Championships. Holly Sholes Wins A WBT AWBT

July 14 - 15, 2007 - Phoenix, AZ 35 Women came to Sixshooters for the AWBT’s 6th stop. This was a WPBA Qualifier for the WPBA Midwest Classic in October. The race for the Qualifier spot heated up in round 9 when Kristin Haney played Marissa Hallett. These were the last two women still in the tourney who paid to play for the Qualifier spot so the match was extremely tense. Kristin came out victorious with a 7-2 win! Marissa then went on to finish in 4th place, knocked out by Kristie Ortega. That meant that from that point on, Kristin was guaranteed the Qualifier spot! next 3 games which made the score 5 to 4 all of a sudden! Kristin then scratched on the 9-ball, which gave Kristie an easy game to put her on the hill. Kristin won the next game, but then the scratch bug bit again after pocketing the 4 ball, which brought Kristie up to the table with a 4 ball out. Kristie made the 4 balls and won the match 7 to 5! So it was down to the last two women standing - Kristie Ortega vs. Holly Sholes! Since this was a true double elimination format, Kristie would have to beat Holly in two sets of races to 7! Holly took off to a quick 3 to 0 lead. The match went back and forth until game 8. Kristie missed the 5 ball, which left Holly with a 4 ball out. Holly made all 4 balls with ease which won

her the game. This also made the score 6 to 2, with Holly on the hill, and Holly’s turn to break. Holly broke and snapped the 9 on the break which won her the match! In a split second, it was over! Congratulations to Kristie for 2nd place and $230 and congratulations to Holly for 1st place and $335 in prize money! Holly will also be attending the WPBA Classic event in October! She had earned a paid entry by winning one of our previous AWBT WPBA Qualifiers! Congratulations Holly! We’ll all be rooting for you and Kristin both! 13 women came back on Sunday to play in the free second chance event. Congratulations to Michelle Trevino for 1st place and $75, Terri Johnson-McCauley for 2nd place and $40 and Claudia Justus for 3rd and $20 in prize money. Tucson Arizona’s Main Street Billiards Ms Q’s captured top honors in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Team Division at The American Cuesports Alliance (ACS) Nationals, June 7-16 in Las Vegas. The Ms Q’s, captained by Tracey Elliott, included Olivia Jackson, Michelle Trevino, Mary Moench and Lois Schmitt. These ladies have also won three consecutive ACS State Championships, are members of the ACS Sanctioned Old Pueblo Cuesports League,hosted by Main Street Billiards. All of Arizona, particularly the southern part, are so very proud of the Ms Q’s. Their hard work, dedication and team effort obviously resulted in quite a bit of well deserved success.

The Paradise Valley Pool League just wrapped up another successful season by rewarding players with some healthy payouts. With two divisions and 27 teams the level of play was spectacular. Kitty’s Lounge was the hotspot this year with teams taking the top spot in both division A and division B. Metro Sports Bar and the Northern Lounge have been frequent title holders in the ‘A’ division but could not out shoot the Cool Cat’s of Kitty’s (65th Place finish at the BCA Nationals). The next PVPL season will start play on Wednesday August 8th. The league continues to grow and we expect to have 3 divisions this season. Make sure to reserve your spot soon as the league is almost full. Division A - The top division in the PVPL is chalked full of great 8ball players that had the stats to prove it. Ox Sports Bar The Ox Sports Bar 3209 E. Pinchot Phoenix, Arizona. The home of four 25 cent Valley Bar Tables. On July 21, 2007 28 players signed up for the Scotch Doubles 9 Ball Tournament. This tournament was a 16 & under Arizona rated tournament. Race to total team handicap minus 7 with a minimum race to 5. The Team entry was $20.00 & there were $5, $10 & $20 side pots available. Sign up was at noon and the tournament started at 1 pm sharp and finished just before closing time. The teams that were in the money were as follows: 1st Bill Hicks and Duncan Barnhill $450.00 2nd John Casey and James Parker $195.00 3rd Jack Bristow and Charlie Taylor $60.00 4th Ebony Kelly and Charles Peten $20.00 Pay outs included side pots and $200.00 added by Rick and Julie. As usual Rick & Julie - owners of the Ox provided a free lunch for the players. This month the lunch was hot dogs & chips with all of the condiments.

8, Melissa Herndon defeated Helena Thornfeldt 9-7, Xioating Pan defeated Monica Webb 9-7, and Ga-Young Kim defeated Kelly Fisher 9-7. Fisher would play Hendon and Pan would play Kim in the televised semi-finals. As Sunday matches began the large Hard Rock crowd, saw Ms. Fisher and Ms. Herndon fight to a 4-4 score at mid-match. From that point forward Fisher took charge and closed with a 7-4 win. The match was highlighted by only one missed ball between the two players, with safety play determining the final score. Match two featured a repeat of the final in the season opening North Carolina Classic in February. Again the match opened with great play and a 3-3 score. At that point Ms. Kim held her break and won game eight on Ms. Pan s break to take a 5-3 lead. When Kim was able to win game nine on her break to post the 6-3 lead, the outcome seems to be determined. Ms. Pan fought back as expected to 6-5 but fell short leaving Kim with a 7-5 win. The final was again a WPBA Classic final. A determined Allison Fisher began strong and raced to a 4-0 lead. Ga-Young fought back with great offense and closed to 4-3, but world's #1 displayed the form that earned her 10 player of the year selections and over 60 pro 9-ball titles. Fisher won the last three games to claim the title and send the race for player of the year into a three event contest over the last three tournaments of the year. As the event ended a great success, it should be mentioned that it began on Wednesday evening with a super success as well. A pro-celebrity event was staged following a lavish reception for the players and guests with the purpose to raise monies for Vivian's Kidz, a charitable foundation formed to benefit children. Several sports and media personalities participated in this fun night and silent auction of sports collectables. Congratulations to the Hard Rock and the Seminole tribe on staging a winning weekend. The sponsors of this highly successful event were The American Poolplayers Assn. as Presenting Sponsor, Brunswick Billiards as Table, Iwan Simonis as Cloth sponsor and Aramith for balls. from: Christina Piona Dave was born in Martinez, CA in 1942. He grew up in Walnut Creek, CA. He began playing pool at a very young age, probably in his early teens at the local bowling alley and recreation center. Dave went out on the road in his 20’s and never looked back. He played in every conceivable nook and cranny corner of the country. He loved the game of pool and won many local and regional tournaments in his career. He also did his share of winning in the high stakes money games that he played in over the years. Dave really loved all his comrades in the billiard community. He enjoyed swapping stories with them. He enjoyed the cameraderie and the competition. He married Christina on 12-9-91 at the Sands Regency Tournament in Reno, NV. He and Christina became Star’s foster parents in 1998, adopting her for their own in 2000. He was honored when people thought of him as an ambassador of pool. He felt called to share his knowledge of the game with others, often offering advice and instruction without charging anything. He loved sharing his Faith with all that he came in contact with. He touched many lives in his short 65 years on this earth. He will be missed. from: Linda Carter and Mike Zimmerman We are just devastated. Mike’s first response was, “My dad died”. Mike looked up to Dave as his mentor and father figure, even though Dave was only 7 years older. Dave saw potential in Mike and took him under his wing, even though Mike learned some of his pool lessons the hard way. Dave was the reason Mike got started playing pool. That bowling alley is where he met Dave and Dave was the best player in the house. He watched Dave beat Jerry Brock out of $2000. While Mike was betting a quarter on the pinball machines, they were laying out $100 dollar bills on the rail in the poolroom. Mike was 13 in 1963 and was about to go into his freshman year of high school, but the flash of all that cash got Mike to thinking there was an easier way to make money than going to school. After that, Mike played Dave every day with different spots, like the 3,4, 6, and 7 playing 50 cents on the 5 and 9. He lost every day. Mike lost his allowance and everything he could scrape up from other players to Dave every day for 6 months until he got good enough so he could win money from other people to support his Piona habit. After about 9 months of playing with him, he was the 2nd best in the bowling alley out of around 20 players. Then they would go next door to the bowling alley and Dave would take money off the bowlers too, (including Mike) spotting 100 pins a game. Dave was about a 190 bowler. Back in those days, you could play pool for $1 from 9-12, so it always had 20 people playing 9 ball, bottle pool, partners, etc. So why go to school? (Disclaimer to young folks - Stay in school!!!) From 16-20 Mike went on the road with Cole Dixon. Then he went to work, got married (short-lived) and decided to go back to playing pool. Went to OR for 6 months to get in stroke in 1976, then came to Seattle and met up with Dave again, who was living in Seattle, and then they went on the road together, headed to Detroit to play Rosie. After about 2.5 years of traveling to every city except Detroit, Mike decided to go home and get a real job for 7 years. Mike had a great time traveling around with Dave and remembers that time fondly.

The 15th Annual Junior National Artistic Pool competition took place July 12-13 concurrently with the BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships, held at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Once again, Tom “Dr. Cue” and Marty “Ms. Cue” Rossman provided the

direction for participants to demonstrate their special cue sport skills. This special addition to the main event gave players of all four divisions an opportunity to take the artistic challenge. As always, it was an exciting and a highly anticipated event by young billiard enthusiasts.
