Feature Location: TOADSTOOL BILLIARD CAFÉ By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

A chance meeting between Suzanne Underdahl and David Mackey at Jammer’s Bar and Grill in Salem, Oregon, has 8 years later blossomed into the opening of first, the Lily Pad Laundry and now, the Toadstool Billiard Café in Emmett, Idaho. Suzanne tells the story this way, “I moved to Salem, Oregon from Minnesota where I was a very active pool player, in leagues, on the Casino circuit and with the Junior leagues. I had played in the International tournament 10 years in a row and has a long list of accomplishments including winning Women’s Masters in Teams and Singles in Minnesota. There we paid $1 per game, so I put my quarters up for the next game at Jammer’s.

David laughed at me and said, ‘You plan on losing your first game?’ and I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, “Well it’s only 50¢ here.’ I quickly

explained that where I was from it cost $1. So I put my money in. They had just gotten done with

leagues, racked the ball and I hadn’t even pulled my stick out yet and he broke and ran the table. So then he says to me, ‘Good thing you had your other quarters up. Rack’em.’ So I put in my 50 ¢ and proceeded to rack. David broke and didn’t make anything. I turned and I looked at him and I put my stick together and I said, ‘My turn!’ He sat down and I ran the next four racks in a row! I guess I caught his attention and for six months after that he tried to beat me and couldn’t. The rest of the

story is that we got engaged in March of 2001 on Friday the 13th and were married that following July on Friday the 13th at 7:13pm on the coast of Oregon. Needless to say we have a fondness for 13. We have raised 3 boys and now we have entered another chapter in our lives. We would like to bring something back to this little town with good food, good service and an environment where people can relax. We took a very large older building, completely gutted it and started from scratch. We now have two g o i n g businesses under one roof as one entity, the Lily Pad Laundromat and the To a d s t o o l Billiard Café. We opened our doors to the pool hall on Wednesday June 11th to coincide with the Cherry Festival here. We knew that we would get a lot of notice from the community being only two blocks from the park in downtown Emmett. This would give us a little slower opening but everyone would know we were there. Our Grand Opening is scheduled for the weekend of September 13-14. We will be celebrating with an 8-Ball Blind Draw Scotch Doubles Tournament on Saturday the 13th. The tournament will be open to 32 teams with $500 added (based on 32) and the cost is only $15 per team. Play will be on 7' Valley Bar Boxes with Simonis cloth. Entry deadline and the draw will be at 9 AM Saturday with play starting at 10 AM sharp. Throughout the day on Saturday will be side tournaments played on our two 8' Valley pool tables. The format is 8-Ball, singles, double elimination, 8 players max with a $5 entry starting (Toadstool continued on page 17)

The Delta-13 is not your ordinary rack. Just one look at the quality and feel of the rack will show you what I am talking about. Check out any billiard supply and you know that there are all types, qualities and prices of cue racks. You only need to stop in your local pool hall or bar and look at the quality of their racks. With its solid feel and unique design it was easy to see why the billiard industry is taking notice of the Delta-13. The price is on the high end of rack prices, more in line with custom, hand made racks but this should not deter the avid pool enthusiast from purchasing a Delta-13. It is built to last a lifetime, unlike most racks either wooden or plastic. We tested the rack under different playing conditions, in home play, during leagues and even during a tournament and found it to give us a professional, consistently great rack every time. "Delta" is for the Greek symbol for its shape and "13" is for aluminum's place on the periodic table of elements. Made from 6061 Aluminum, the DELTA-13 racks are quality checked on a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to ensure accuracy. Unlike the standard plastic or wooden rack, it's guaranteed to never warp, bend, or break. There is absolutely no give in the sides of the rack and that's why it outperforms the others. Ask for the DELTA-13 rack at Seyberts.com or PoolDawg.com. The unique, patent-pending ergonomic design of the rack allows for easy removal from the balls. It's available in red, blue, black, or gold and each side can be personalized with custom engraving to include text and graphic logos. The retail price is $119 plus $12 shipping/handling. Please visit ExecutiveBilliards.com for more details.

DELTA-13

Samm Diep, the official spokesperson and representative for the Delta-13 had this to say after the BCA Trade Show in North Carolina, “The new DELTA-13 Rack was the official rack used during BCA GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Tournament. It's made from solid aluminum by a company that specializes in precision machining for aerospace and medical equipment. This rack received rave reviews from all the professional players in the event.” "It's the best rack I've ever seen. There are no spaces in between the balls. It's awesome!" says Tony Robles, Professional Player and Predator 9-Ball Tour Director. John Schmidt, currently ranked 10th on the U.S. Professional Men's Tour, has this to say about the DELTA-13, "I think its a fantastic product. Its obviously been machined correctly to fit the balls. Theres no flex in the rack and the balls rack perfectly. I like the skinny design because I like to play straight pool. I also like the contemporary look. I think it would look fantastic in a home or an upscale poolroom." "My custom laser engraved rack looks beautiful and works great! Straight pool enthusiasts will love the small size of this rack- many more break balls are usable with this thin but strong profile." says Mike Fieldhammer (BilliardCoach.com), Professional Billiard Instructor. Executive Billiards is a subsidiary of RJD Machining, a 21 year old precision machining company which manufactures components for aerospace, medical device, and computer storage industries. 85% of the components they manufacture are made from aluminum, which has given them a great deal of experience and expertise in cutting this material. Executive Billiards is also a member of the Billiards Congress of America.

Nina went on to play Michelle Abernathy, and Liz went on to play Nina Tagley Kathleen Lawless for 5/6th place. Kathleen and Nina won their matches and met up next to play for 4th place. N i n a came out victorious and went on to play Samm in the first semi final match. Nina won the match and went on to play Nicole Keeney for the final! Metro Sports Bar By Don Akerlow 9 ball on 7' bar tables with 38 players coming out to Metro Sports Bar in Phoenix, AZ the weekend of July 26-27, 2008 for the 4th stop on the Desert Classic Tour. The first day showed to be a tough competition that saw 12 players return on Sunday for the money round. The hot seat saw Jimmy Mendoza and Dave Wiseman meet up for 1st Place: their match. On the Jimmy Mendoza one loss side saw Mitch Ellerman take on Scott Frost. What proved to be an extraordinary match that seemed to last around 30 minutes Mitch beat Scott 9-4 with Scott taking 4th. Now back to the hot seat, Jimmy and Dave were locked in a battle that saw Jimmy make quick work and cruise to the victory. N ow it was to the one loss side where Dave met Mitch. Mitch was his old self making runouts look easy which left Dave to finish in 3rd place. Lenny Marshall was there with OnTheRailTV.com to provide live streaming of the matches along with a number of characters in the box doing commentary throughout which made for an interesting afternoon online. The finals was a one set race to 13. Mitch looked to be unbeatable, jumping out to an early lead until Jimmy tied the match at 5. Jimmy played some timely safeties only to see Mitch kick and make shots. Jimmy was up 11 to 8 needing only 2 more wins for the championship. Mitch may have been rattled late in the match and Jimmy took advantage to go on the hill, breaking but could not get out. Score 12-9. Mitch breaking, Mitch gets to 12-10. So in the 23rd rack the match was over, score 13-10 in Jimmy’s favor. The Desert Classic Tour would like to thank all of its sponsors, the Metro Sports Bar for hosting with great staff and food, as well as the live streaming by OnTheRailTV.com. Does Slower Make Better New Arizona DUI Law to Require Ignition Interlock Devices for All DUI Offenders! Mandating the use of breath alcohol ignition interlock devices in the vehicles of DUI offenders has been a common theme in proposed DUI laws this year, and the state of Arizona has just recently signed a law requiring these breath testers in the vehicles of people convicted of drunk driving. An ignition interlock device, of course, requires a person to blow into a blood alcohol content (BAC) tester located inside the vehicle and prevents the car from starting if a certain amount of alcohol is found on the breath. It is illegal to be driving or operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher in not only Arizona but all other 49 states. On May 18th, Governor Janet Napolitano signed SB1029 into an Arizona DUI law that now requires all DUI offenders to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles for at least one year after regaining their driving privileges. Prior to the signing of this new DUI law in Arizona, ignition interlocks were required in the vehicles of repeat DUI offenders or those convicted of extreme or aggravated DUI. Fighting for your rights since 1970 OUR SPECIALTIES MEDICAL MALPRACTICE PERSONAL INJURY AUTO ACCIDENTS PRODUCT LIABILITY CONSTRUCTION / WORKSITE INJURIES

By Roger Long Advanced Certified Instructor

We’ve probably all been told at one point or another that we should slow our play down. I say that because it is a far more common error to play too fast than it is to play too slow. On our own, few of us ever developed the habit of taking enough time to analyze each shot and be sure of a good aim before pulling the trigger. Most of Roger Long us just naturally wanted to hurry up and get the shot over with, and the thought that slowing down might help us never entered our minds. It’s not a bad thing to want to play at a quicker tempo, however. As a matter of fact, it can be a pretty good thing, as long as you are prepared for it. Quick tempos lend themselves well to the development of good rhythm, and good rhythm is something all great players possess. To be properly prepared to play at a faster tempo means putting in enough practice to develop the necessary instincts to be able to consistently execute shots at that tempo. So if you’ve never properly prepared yourself to play at a quick tempo, it will probably be necessary to slow your game down until you are prepared. But some people never do see the benefits in returning to a faster pace after they’ve experienced a measure of success because they slowed down. It’s like they’ve found a way to improve without taking on more practice, so why work toward speeding up again? They seem to think, hey, I got immediate results by slowing my game down, so wouldn’t playing even slower be just that much better? And so, slower and slower they go. So what’s wrong with this, you say? Nothing, really; as long as you are making every shot, winning every game, not sharking anyone, and not violating any rules, that is. But my guess is that it isn’t going nearly that well for all of you really slow players. Bob Fancher, in his excellent book, Pleasures of Small Motions, explains the importance rhythm plays in shooting good pool. In short, he tells us that cadence and tempo go together to make up one’s particular rhythm, and rhythm is what coordinates the activities of the many different modules that make up the physical and mental systems which must work together to execute a pool shot. Whew! That was a mouthful. What’s my point here? It’s this…you slow players just ain’t got no RHYTHM! Well, you probably do, but it shouldn’t require time-lapse photography to measure it. I’m just kidding, of course. But can you see where I’m coming from? How rhythmic can it be when a player studies a shot from behind the cue ball, then walks around and points his tip at the contact point on the object ball, then goes back and chalks his tip while he studies the shot from behind the cue ball again, then gets down on the shot and strokes the cue a few times, then shakes his head and stands up and starts the process all over again? All of that is not necessary if you’ve developed your game properly.

Chip Pool Classic Sam’ s St ra ight Pool Sam’s Stra raight From: Dick Jones Manager/Tournament Director

Final standings for the “Chip” Classic pool tournament held at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was held Satuday June 14, 2008 with a great turnout of 23 players. At one time we had 42 players signed up, however the weather went from rain and ugly to nice and sunny so a lot of those players had a lot of other things to be doing. A special Thank You goes out to all the players that showed up and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a “Chip” Pool Tournament is I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball, Singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. You are paid immediately for every game you win, instant gratification. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the player with any chip/s left. Every player won at least one game. Everybody made money. What’s left of the prize fund is paid out to the final four players. 1st $80 Mike Schaff, Bozeman 2nd $60 Vaughn Everly, Belgrade 3rd $40 Dan Chapman, Gardiner 4th $20 Leland Flint, Three Forks Again, I want to thank all the players that showed up. What a fun day it was, thank you.

was a race to three on the winner’s side and race to two on the one loss side. Cue Club regular John “Sgt John” Sandifer made quite a run through the winner’s side defeating Bill Skinner on his way to meet Joe Ross of Colorado Springs. Joe would then pass through a grueling hill-hill match with John to claim the hot seat. Over on the one loss side Alex Kanapilly got by the one hole wizard Dave Gross 2-1 to meet Skinner. Alex’s run would end at fourth place though as he watched Bill Skinner win the set and move on to defeat Sgt John and double-dip Ross for the title. One Pocket is a true test of many pool skills and we saw them on display this day. With the win Bill claimed the $375 top prize and elevated himself (One Pocket continued on page 22)

Club provided the venue and trophies for first, second, and third place. The format, which could be called ‘soft bracketing’, groups the different handicaps (2 thru 7) in the first round and plays out as a traditional double elimination tournament ensuring every skill level of a chance to at least get in the money. Matching up in the finals of the winners side were Kris Pipken as a seven and Dave Rasmussen as a three. Pipken went on to win the set and claim the coveted hot seat. Dave went over to the one loss side to await the winner of Robert Gleitz, rated a four, and Justin Ohm who is also rated a four. Justin, who’s only loss thus far was to Pipken, went on to defeat Robert and Dave consecutively for another crack at Kris in the finals. However, this was Kris’ day as he would go on to claim the beautiful first place trophy. Congratulations to Kris, Justin, Dave and the rest of the players who finished in the money! The summer session Mile High Top Gun will be at the Cue Club sometime in October so, players, watch for the announcement. Final – This match had everything that a fan could want in a Final. The match went back and forth with safety battles and come from behind runs. At one point Jose Parica had the lead in the 14 rack with a score of 111-67 when, all of a sudden, Jose misses a bank in the side pocket. Oscar steps up to the table and makes a game out of this match with a 37 ball run to bring the score to 111-104. In the 17th rack Oscar was not able to spread the rack and was forced to play safe. Safety battles were exchanged as well as fouls (intentional and unintentional). Eventually, Jose was able to squeak by with the win 125-117. I would like to extend a special thanks to the Tournament Staff; Tournament Director Michael Piyasombun, Tournament Referee Wayne Norcross, Table Assistant Nick Poodenpah, Hard Times Manager Elias Valles and all the staff of Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA. August 2008

DENVER, Colorado –July 14th, 2008- Melissa Little, top ranked Woman’s Professional Billiards Associations touring professional, announces today that pool players from all around Colorado can now participate in 15 rack pool leagues – her creation of the next generation of pool leagues. 15 rack is basically fifteen racks of 10-ball, the ghost. Three players participate per pool table and each player documents their statistical progress with unique 15 rack league sheets. Each player breaks the 10-ball rack, takes “ball in hand” after the break, and tries to run as many balls in order as possible in each inning. When players either misses, hook themselves, poor position, scratches, fouls, or run all ten-balls, the inning ends. The next player then proceeds to the same challenge. At the end of three 10-week sessions, Melissa guarantees a $4,000.00 added 10-ball “Viper Challenge” extravaganza. When the players participate in 1 of 3 15-rack 10-week sessions scheduled then those players automatically qualify for the Viper Challenge. The players are excited to participate in this new league that is individualized, fun, exciting, and pressure filled each time they come the table. Not only will this help their pool game, the statistics become a learning tool on “how to” better their games. Lets face it 9-ball is great but 10-ball is exceptional and very demanding of a player. 15 rack is now being hosted in the most popular poolrooms in the Denver Metro area. Places like The Colorado Cue Club, The Wynkoop Brewing Company, Match-up’s, and The Denver Athletic Club are just some of the rooms that have committed to the up coming three sessions. Session one began last week and it’s not too late for participation- just stop by one of the venues on the corresponding day. There are plenty of openings for session two that starts at the beginning of October and session three begins the first week of January 2009. Look out everyone 15 rack is very addictive! Nafe A Safety Game By: Bob Jewett For many players, the skills needed for playing safeties are among the last to develop. I remember Bob Jewett seeing top players for the first time and being amazed by some of the iron-clad lock-ups they achieved. While some players tend too much towards safety play, I think it’s an important part of the game to learn well — a single well-timed, well-played safe has won many a match. The game “Nafe” was invented by Mike Page who is a pool instructor in Fargo, ND. It is named by combining nine ball and safe, and that’s how its rules go as well. First, the basic version. To score points, you must hook your opponent. Pocketing balls may be a useful strategy, but that’s not the way to score — not even the nine ball. If you do leave your opponent hooked, which means there is no direct path to hit the lowest ball (banks, swerves and jumps are “indirect”), you get one point. You also get to take ball in hand as if your opponent had fouled. You then either try to get another hook or run a few balls and then play a hook. If you fail to either make a ball or get a valid safe, your opponent starts with ball in hand. Also, the first shot after the break begins with ball in hand for whoever has the shot. The flow of the game is a little hard to understand from just a description, so here is a typical rack. You break and make the four ball. You take ball in hand, and because the one ball is in the jaws of a pocket, you pocket it and get the cue ball over by the two. Playing a stop on the two knocks it to the other end of the table leaving the cue ball behind the eight for a snooker, and you score one point. You take ball in hand and pocket the two and three which are open, and then try a safe on the five, but you just leave the edge of the five visible to your opponent. He takes ball in hand, and safes you on the five, knocking it to the other end of the table, near the six. Instead of running the five and six, he knocks the five back to the other end of the table, leaving you stuck behind the six. He takes ball in hand, and tries to play a safe on the five but leaves it open, so you begin your turn with ball in hand. There is no clear way to play safe, so you clear the table and break the next rack. Mike points out that one of the skills you will learn with this game is to plan ahead for a safe play. Too often you see players who try for difficult position in a situation that is almost impossible to run out when they could have easily played a safe in the middle of the run to make things easy. They take the hero’s route rather than the smart play. This game will let you start to see the smart plays. In the first form of Nafe described above, the definition of “safe” is pretty lax. Your opponent may have an easy kick at the ball, but as long as he can’t see any part of it, you get a point and ball in hand. In “Pro Nafe,” your opponent has a chance to test the safe — if he gets a legal hit, you don’t get credit for the safe and he gets ball in hand to start his inning. Mike didn’t mention it, but when your opponent has his shot to test your safe, I think it’s OK for him to take any shot he chooses that might improve his chances by reducing your chance play another safe. That adds another layer to the strategy. You can play the game to some number of points such as 10 or 20, which will probably take several racks. Whoever pockets the nine breaks the next rack. While you can practice the game alone, I think you will find it much more interesting against an opponent. Let me know how you like the game, and I’ll pass your comments and/or suggestions on to Mike Page.

Shut it off! By Samm Diep © July 2008 I was recently approached by a local player, Kenny, who shared a story with me of how the last time we played each other in the straight pool league he answered a phone call just before our match began and was completely distracted during the entire match. “You should write an article about shutting Samm Diep your phone off if you’re about to play a match,” he said. I’d never even thought about that. Unless it’s an all day event, when I’m on my way to a match I’m typically walking from my hotel room to the tournament room. I like to keep my head down, maybe even have my headphones on. This is not the time to be the social butterfly. In fact, world champion Ralf Souquet is one of the nicest, friendliest guys in the game. He will stop to answer any question and let you talk to him for hours, EXCEPT when he’s on his way to a match. He just politely responds, “I’ll talk to you after my match.” If you think about it, shutting off your phone is the same concept. If you wouldn’t want to stop to chit chat with someone, why would you answer a call to have a conversation? You probably wouldn’t (and definitely shouldn’t) do it in the midst of a match, not doing it before your match will only help reinforce your focus. Your concentration for a tournament should begin prior to your match, not at the sound of the first break. Proper preparation for a match is not only about having a nutritious meal or making sure your shaft is clean; it also includes caring for your mental state. How well can you play when you show up to a match straight from having an argument with your spouse or finding out you just lost your job? Don’t even let it happen. Shut off your phone. I’ll even take this one step further. I’m a true believer in practicing the way we want to perform and taking our practice as seriously as our matches. This would mean that if we’re going to shut our phones off on our way to a tournament, we should do the same if we’re on our way to practice too, right? Also, I know many players that like to practice on their lunch hour or only have a very limited amount of time to hit balls when they do. Well, here’s a little tip: Set the alarm on your phone or watch for the time that you need to pack up. The last time I tried to practice in a hurry and had to keep an eye on the clock, it was just as distracting as answering a bad phone call. So, the next time you grab your cues and head out the door to a tournament or to practice, remember to shut your phone off. If you’re expecting an important phone call, then you probably shouldn’t be entering a tournament anyway. Enjoy your pool time! That’s what it’s all about.

M8 Pool leagues what’s it all about?

M8 Pool Leagues was established in 1989 as an alternative to the “same old pool league” where the top players come in and take everyone else’s money. The format is “Race to Points” so that every ball matters in every game. A mathematical formula is applied to the results of every game, every set, and every match - and it applies to all players equally. Since there is no “Disqualification” for teams going over a team limit handicap - and bonus points to those who stay under, there is no reason to attempt to manipulate handicaps. The handicap formula used is so accurate that nearly 3 out of every 4 head to head sets played has gone hill/hill in over 2.4 million sets played. This format has grown so popular in the Minnesota area (nearly 10 times larger than ANY other league system) with over 600 teams each season and over 5000 members - that we are now offering this league system all across the USA. Our League also pays out more in prize money than ANY other League in the same market with over $100,000.00 in prizes paid out each season and over $100,000.00 paid out in prizes in our annual league tournament where 3 different teams can win up to $10,000.00 each and our Singles Champion wins $3,500.00. There aren’t any “set up fees” or “franchise fees” - you simply just need to have the desire to improve the game of pool in your area. So give us a call at 651-636-2022 or visit our website at www.M8Pool.com if you want to make a difference in the world of pool.

9 BALL SCOTCH DOUBLES LEAGUE, 2008 In one of the closest scotch doubles leagues run for the last 10 years, 13 teams engaged in ferocious competition in a double round session. This title was held previously by Mike Sano and Kacie Ragen. At the end of 27 weeks of continue play we had a triple tie between 3rd and 5th spot, and a 5 way tie between 6th spot and 10th spot. Total games won were the final factor to determine final positions for all the ties. HOLLY ROBINSON-GARY STEVENS Out of possible 24 matches, our newly crowned BCA champion in the senior category winner Holly Robinson teamed up with top male player Gary Stevens to end up with a record of 17 wins, 7 losses and 9 - 9 ball brakes. Congratulations to them, who from week one had to give handicap to all teams and still managed to overcome the tough competition plus the mental game.

HOLLYWOOD JACK MEMORIAL ONE POCKET TOURNAMENT

The Original Hollywood Billiards

Hollywood Jack Memorial

was constructed in 1916 when Louis B. Mayer built the four-story building on the corner of Hollywood and Western. He used it for his offices and divided the basement into a bowling alley and billiard room. Later, he expanded the billiard room to include the whole basement. From the start, Hollywood Billiards thrived as a dark and dingy, no-frills basement pool hall home to some of the greatest players in the world. But all that changed with the Northridge earthquake of 1994. In one moment a nearly 80-year-old landmark was gone. Despite the quake, we were determined to resurrect Hollywood Billiards. We found the present location (three blocks west of the original site) and proceeded to design and rebuild a landmark. Nearly four years and $4 million later the legend was back, but much different from the old place. If you look around our two-story billiard hall, you'll find 28 Gold Crown pool tables, 55 high-definition TVs, projection screens, a bumping sound system, an arcade, and a draft beer system that delivers 30 different beers at precisely the right temperature. We also feature an unmatched view from our upstairs covered patio of the famous Hollywood sign and Griffith Park Observatory, a VIP room complete with its own pool table and HDTV, a beautiful exposed brick smoking courtyard with outdoor plasmas, and a collection of international cinema posters. While publications have picked us as the best billiard hall and the best sports bar on the planet, it is your opinion that matters most. Here's to the next 100 years... http://www.myspace.com/hollywoodbilliards

Here are the photos that Joe Richland took and was kind enough to share. While I don't have an article written, I can tell you that in my 20 years in this biz I always wanted to throw a larger one pocket tournament. Many seasoned vets warned me about the turn out as unlike 9 ball in which there on random wins, all victories are a result of skill. While the turnout was about half of what our other tournaments do, the excitement and tension was more than double. We had a great turnout in terms of skill and the best players made it to the second day. As the field narrowed, the buzz got stronger and the final between Ochoa and Frost was like a great Sumo match where each were trying to toss the other not out of the ring, but off of the table. To be able to commemorate Hollywood Jack was the frosting on the cake. Finally, our next big event will be an Open 8 Ball on August 31-September 1st (Labor Day), Race to 7 on the Winners side and Race to 6 on the losers, $75 entry. Doors open at 10 a.m. and tournament begins at noon. $3000 added based on 64 players. This will round out our annual series in which we have 8 Ball, 9 Ball, 10 Ball, and One Pocket. In addition, the USPPA will present a qualifier for the Junior World Championships at the California Billiard Club in Mountain View, California, on Friday, November 28, 2008. “The United States Pool Players Association would like to thank the Billiard Congress of America and the World Pool-Billiard Association for the opportunity to host these events,” said Tony Annigoni, managing partner of the United States Pool Players Association. “As we consider youth to be the foundation of the sport, the ability to host the World Juniors Championship is a true honor for the USPPA. In addition, hosting the World 9-Ball Championship for Wheelchair Players is an excellent opportunity to showcase the wonderful skills and talent of these players.” “The BCA would like to thank the United States Pool Players Association and the World PoolBilliard Association for their partnership on these two significant events,” said Ivan Lee, chair of the WPA committee for the BCA. “We take our role as the North American representative to the WPA very seriously and will work hard with our partners at the WPA and USPPA to host a great event that creates an outstanding experience for all competitors.” WPA President Ian Anderson says: “We are delighted that the BCA has been able to organize these world championships in the United States. We are also pleased that they are

to be staged in Reno, a very popular venue for pool tournaments for many years. The WPA congratulates all involved in the staging of these excellent events that showcase the depth of talent our sport contains among the youth and wheelchair players of today.” The Junior World 9-Ball Championships will be comprised of the world’s best junior players from six continents. Last year’s competition was held in Willingen, Germany, and prior to that it was held in Sydney, Australia. “The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) is pleased to sponsor the 2008 USA Junior Team to the World Championships,” said BEF President Tom Riccobene. “This year’s team is as fine a representation as we have ever had. We thank the BCA for its direct support and for hosting this important event.” The USPPA is hosting the 2008 World 9-Ball Championship for Wheelchair Players in collaboration with the National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association (NWPA), which is the governing body for wheelchair pool in the United States. The NWPA hosts and sanctions a national network of tournaments for wheelchair players and maintains the national rankings for players who compete in these events. The NWPA will select the U.S. players who will be invited to compete in this year’s world championship for the current national rankings and/or previous outstanding player achievements, and will work with the other pool federations around the world to develop the invitations for international wheelchair players. The NWPA will also offer players who did not receive a player slot through the selection process a chance to earn a qualifier spot in its 2008 National Wheelchair 9-Ball Championship, which will be held at Diamond Billiards in Brea, California, in mid-October. “The NWPA is excited that the USPPA has taken the initiative to add these two prestigious championships to its schedule of events at the Reno Open,” said Jeff Dolezal, president of the NWPA. “We are looking forward to working

with the USPPA to make these events a success. Billiards is an sport for everyone and the inclusion of the Junior World Championships and the World Championship for wheelchair players together with an existing professional billiard tournament and a high-caliber proam event clearly demonstrates the versatility of the sport and the high level of skill in which it can be played, regardless of your age, sex, or whether you compete from a standing or sitting position.” About Billiard Congress of America Founded in 1948, the Billiard Congress of America is a non-profit trade organization dedicated to growing a united, prosperous and highly regarded billiard industry through BCA leadership. By Marc Ong I was approached by one of my league players at about the end of June regarding the possibility of doing a small fund raiser tournament for a sick daughter of his team mate Michael Rodriguez. Ron Quarton thus started the ball rolling on what turned out to be an inspirational and amazing outpouring of support from the league and business community. All proceeds were earmarked for 9 year old Dezere Rodriguez who was born with water in the brain. Legally blind from cataracts, she suffers from Scoliosis, an implanted growth rod, pneumonia, as well as a serious infection from a kinked feeding tube. Dezere spends her days hospitalized and bedridden with only the hope of going home fueling her fight. Our modest plan of a simple benefit tournament soon exploded into a full blown 3 event program over the course of 2 weeks in mid July. With the diligent help of league representatives Gia Medina and Dawn Tarver,

combo. Opening breaks sounded off at 2:00 pm in sync with the stop watches. A raffle and BBQ stand kept all full and hopeful throughout the afternoon. By evening time, the fastest pool player emerged. It was none other than Michael Rodriguez himself. Besting 27 other speedy hopefuls, Mike is excited about the controller prize and is confident his other 2 daughters Karyssa and Celena will enjoy it immensely. Friday, July 18th, Kelly’s Pub in Arcadia hosted the presentation party where the Rodriguez family would be presented with the proceeds from the preceding weeks of activities. the local APA league was able to set up 2 varied format benefit tournaments for July 11th and 12th. On Friday, July 10th, Kelly’s Pub in Arcadia hosted the first leg with a scotch doubles blind draw 9 ball tournament. We had anticipated 10 teams or so but by 8:00 pm, the tournament director was revising the board Mike Rodriguez with wife Kristina and 11 year old Karyssa to accommodate nearly 50 players. A raffle for donated prizes fetched additional proceeds for the event. The tournament prizes up for grabs were a set of surround sound speakers and a cue, case, accessories combo. With the larger than expected field, the final match was not played until 3:30 AM. Though grueling, a great time was had by all. Most of the participants retired to rest up for the 2nd event leg the next day. Saturday, July 11th, Golden Cue Billiards in South El Monte hosted leg 2 with a speed pool tournament. 1st place prize was a Hot Rod PC gaming control panel with arcade software. 2nd place was another cue, case, accessory The APA pool league comes together to play for this great cause

The remainder of the donated prizes including bottles of liquor and restaurant gift certificates was raffled off that night giving many something good to take home. At presentation time, the APA in conjunction with efforts of Ron Quarton’s corner raised nearly $4000 for the Rodriguez family. What initially started as a humble idea to help the family with gas and parking money relief, turned into quite an amazing gift from some really big hearts. We would like to thank all those involved. VNEA Celebrates 20th Year Of Educating Amusement Companies On Running Leagues! by Brian Elliott

The official dates for the Workshop were July 18th and 19th, however, on Thursday, July 17th, the festivities kicked into gear with an attendee “meet and greet”. The Ramada Mall Of America in Bloomington, Minnesota near the Minneapolis Airport was the stage for the event and served as the perfect host. When people started showing up on Thursday evening, the VNEA greeted them with “free tickets” to the Ramada’s own comedy club “Joke Joint”. Patrons enjoyed a night of comedy and camaraderie and it was a great way to break the ice before the weekends meetings began. On Friday morning at 10:30am, that’s exactly what happened. VNEA’s newest seminar “HowTo Get Started” was added for newer Charters so that they could figure out what to do once you joined the VNEA. Longtime VNEA personality, Gary Nelson from Stansfield Vending in LaCrosse, Wisconsin led the discussion and did a terrific job informing everyone, new and old, in attendance. Other Courses and Speakers with over 200 years of league experience included... Development Of Leagues - Elmar Klapstein (Wal-Mac Amusement Alberta, Canada), Divisionalizing & Scheduling - Judy Mehle (BMW Billiards - Ft. Collins, CO), Vince Leavey (Western Automatic Amuse. - Ontario, Canada) Valley Seminar - Dave Courington (Valley - Grand Prairie, TX), Juniors &Year-End Get-Togethers - Vince Leavey (Western Automatic Amuse. experience of a lifetime. Just a 1 minute shuttle ride away stood the one and only “Mall Of America” which would serve as the evening’s entertainment for many of our guests. For those that didn’t want to shop for the best deals in town, there was also the beautiful city of Minneapolis to explore where the Twins baseball team happened to be playing this particular evening. Needless to say, there was something for everyone on Friday night. Seminars, averaging 40 attendees, began bright and early at 9:30am on Saturday morning and would run through 5:30pm that afternoon. On both Friday and Saturday, delicious lunches and dinners were served compliments of Valley who was represented at the event by Cheryl Sartin, Joe Bundra and Dave Courington. Saturday night was highlighted with a fun and informative “Charter Holder Tournament” where five, 4-player teams would face-off in a double elimination tournament ran by Las Vegas Championships Tournament Director Gary Benson. Although everyone that participated was a winner, the eventual Champions were awarded “Free Lodging at the 2009 VNEA International Championships in Las Vegas”. “Free Airfare” was also awarded to the Hard Luck Champions. The VNEA was in a giving mood and the operators at the event were greatly appreciative. Other highlights of the event included... • Tom Elum’s Junior League Fundraiser generating over $400 • Junior League Silent Auction raising over $800 • (3) Separate “League Software” Professionals: - Gary Kluck (League Central) - Ab Tymeson (League Machine) - Richard Gonzales (League Magician) • Special Appearances by VNEA Board Member Dave Hawkins (MN) and VNEA President Bruce Bauldridge (CO) A special Thanks to Valley for all of their support and product specials during the weekend.

Houdini’s Houdini’s 8-Ball 8-Ball Dan Hart, Chuck Hassler, Michael Siplivy, Steven Hanks, Paul Allers, Rick Amos By Mike “Houdini” Dolan

The northwest has some fine pool players and many of them call Whidbey Island their home. With the January opening of Houdini’s Billiards in Freeland, serious players can find a challenge right in their own back yard. Featuring 8 Ball on Mondays and 9 Ball on Wednesdays, Houdini’s is attracting players from all over the Puget Sound Region. On July 27th, a cold wet and dreary Sunday, 18 players got together for the “Freeland Shootout” Eight Ball tournament. With a race to five, double elimination format, play got under way at 10:00 AM. On the top half of the winners bracket Dan Hart went to work and quickly sent Frank Rose to the other side. Next up for Dan was noted Cue maker, Paul Allers. After six games it was even up, then Dan took the next two to move on and face Chuck Hassler. Chuck had beaten Michael Dodd then took on Doug Dunn for a close match finally sending Doug to the losers side. The match between Dan and Chuck was tight and could have gone either way. Finally Dan prevailed and Chuck went to the losers bracket. On the lower half of the winners bracket Rick Amos was working a little magic and moved Ray Comacho. Justin Barnes in a tough match with Pat McNulty went on to play Rick and was himself dispatched to the losers bracket by Rick setting up to face Steve Hanks. Meanwhile, Steve started his move with a tough set against Dexter Lewis, followed by a win over Greg Brown. This brought Rick and Steve together for a tough match with Steve getting the win and moving on to face Dan Hart for the pole position on the winners side. Another tough match that went 4-5 with Steve sending Dan to wait it out on the losers side. In the losers bracket Dexter Lewis was sent home early by Joe Anderson who went on to face Doug Dunn. Doug in turn sent Joe home with some impressive safety play. Also in the top half of the losers bracket, Pat McNulty bested Steve Myers followed by Ray Comacho. Pat in turn was denied further action with a loss to Paul Allers who was sent there by Dan. Paul and Doug played a fine set of games with Doug taking the final game to face Rick Amos. Rick held on and Paul retired from the field in 5th place. In the lower half of the losers bracket Tyler Amos dispatched Frank Rose to face Ryan Skaggs. Ryan proved too tough for Tyler and saw him off to the sidelines. Ryan faced Justin Barnes in a tough match with Justin moving on to face Michael Siplivy. Michael was proving to be a tough competitor taking out Michael Dodd and Greg Brown. Michael and Justin went back and forth with Michael taking the win and face Chuck Hassler. After another tough set of games Michael moved on with Chuck taking 6th place. Michaels win set up the match with Rick Amos in a battle where the loser picked up 4th place and the winner would move on to face Dan Hart. Michael proved to be made of tough stuff and finally sent Rick to the showers. Dan and Michael played a very strong match but eventually Dan wore Michael down. This put Dan and Steve Hanks into a rematch in a race to seven final set. The final match was a see-saw battle with the lead going back and forth for several games. After a long day of play and with five wins each, Steve missed several critical shots and opened the door for Dan to take the match and 1st place.

Houdini’s Billiards wants to thank all the players who participated and is looking forward to the next big tourney in October. Watch for the ad in the September issue of The Break. Houdini’s added $80.00 for a total purse of $620 First place Dan Hart $300.00 Second place Steven Hanks $160.00 Third place Michael Siplivy $80.00 Fourth place Rick Amos $40.00 Fifth place Paul Allers $20.00 Sixth place Chuck Hassler $20.00 See ad page 22
