VNEA Junior Tourney

Mankato, MN June 26-29, 2003 Everyone knew on Thursday night, June 26th when the doors opened at 6:00pm and over 300 juniors engulfed the center that this was going to be The Big One . Singles competition didn t begin until 10:00 the next morning, but that didn t stop these eager shooters from getting in a night of practice before the big show. In years past, we opened the doors on Thursday just as a courtesy to the players and their families who drove a long way and wanted to practice and unwind. This year, 12 separate mini-tournaments were conducted on this busy eve of the tournament. Fortunately, the VNEA Tournament Committee was in place and ready for this onslaught of players. The following morning, when a record number of 622 Singles participants entered the auditorium, they were treated to the most incredible junior tournament facility ever orchestrated. A record 87 Valley pool tables graced the spacious arena surrounded by player seating and a spectacular viewing area from the stadium seating above. The famous Pocket featured only 6 tables where the coveted finals of each event would unfold. The bleachers filled quickly for these important matches throughout the weekend.

In Memory Of ...

In My Opinion......

Chad W Aldridge 1977 - 2003

The pool world suffered a huge loss on Sunday night when Chad Aldridge died in a car accident. Chad was an up and coming player with a big stroke and a winning smile. I remember when he first beat me at age 16 or 17 and I told him what a great future he was going to have. He then proceeded to beat all the top players in the NW throughout the years.

I personally will miss him because he was a great friend I could count on to stand by me and he was just getting back on his feet. I will also remember the last time I saw him when he spoke to me outside a tournament and told me what a good friend I was and he gave me a big hug. --- Linda Carter The Northwest is mourning the loss of a very young, and talented pool player in that of Chad Aldridge. Chad was suddenly taken from us on the early morning of August 4th in a tragic automobile accident. Born May 26, 1977 in the small town of Sedro Wooley, WA Chad grew up doing the very same things most young boys do. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding dirt bikes. He loved being around people, and always had an impact on every person he was around. His Father Bucom Aldridge introduced Chad to the game of pocket billiards. Chad soon took a real liking due to his natural abilities. He had another great coach, and companion in that of his Uncle Dana Aldridge. When he first began playing pool, and getting around he could be found in several different venues that attracted pool enthusiasts. Some of those included River City Billiards in Mount Vernon, Funtasia in Lynnwood, and Dr. Cue s in Shoreline. Everywhere he played people witnessed his natural talents, and love for the game. At the age of about 21 Chad found another passion that he was good at. This was DJ ing music in clubs. Like pool Chad took it and used his talents to be good at it, while having fun. Even though this did cause some breaks away from playing he was never too far from a table, or his good friends. He made it a point to be the best friend he could be. Chad touched each one of us in a different way like most people couldn t. His smile, and sense of humor were fantastic and will be sadly missed. A memorial service was held August 9th at Lemley s Funeral Chapel in Sedro Wooley, WA. Over 150 people attended the service. Packing the facility to say their goodbyes. Several people stood up and spoke about remembering Chad, and telling stories. I know that I had several myself that I will remember him by. We then proceeded to Concrete, WA where Chad was to be buried in Forest Park Cemetary. It is here that we paid our last respects to a great friend, brother and most importantly a son. Chad we will miss you dearly and until we see you again keep your stroke smooth, and your smile bright. --- Sean Finney and Cue Ball Gary I first met Chad about seven years ago. He had a pretty cocky attitude about himself. Over the last year and a half I played in numerous tournaments that Chad played in, all over the Seattle area. He was becoming quite a bit more respectful of other players in general. He seemed much more into the flow of life and more importantly, was really starting to enjoy life and the game he was quite good at...pocket Billiards! I will miss his quick and large smile...fast and loose playing style! --- Robert L. Colby, President - National Billiard League (See Tournament Results page 13)

When Should You Use Inferior Equipment? by: Don Cheese Akerlow

Sharking and trying to gain an advantage over an individual or team in tournament or league can be a common occurrence, and should be easily recognizable to tournament directors and league operators. What aggravates most pool players at any given time is a change in the rules. This may occur during the league season but especially in tournament play. If the rules are changed because of an error or to make it more fair for all the league or tournament players, that is acceptable to most players. But when league operators or tournament directors change the rules and not notify the players of these changes you have to wonder why. Is it to gain an unfair advantage? One would think so. If in a tournament you are playing on or using equipment that is the best that you can get at that time (such as balls, cloth, tables), you play a better game. You may find yourself in a tournament and the other player or league team is making a protest, not because they want better equipment but because they want inferior equipment to be played. I believe that any pool player that has played with a plugged cue ball will agree that it is the most inconsistent with rolls especially when compared to a red circle and the new Aramith cue ball. A question I ask you. What advantage would any player have by wanting to use a plugged cue ball in a tournament when the new Aramith had been used all day long? The answer may be to throw off the other team s consistency and gain an advantage especially if they had been practicing with the plugged cue ball. The league operator or tournament director should recognize this ploy and be impartial. No one likes playing with equipment that doesn t measure up to the standard that you are used to playing with. By using the plugged cue ball it lowered the standard of play. What do you think? Email me at cheeses4u@aol.com with some pithy comments, name & town, name & town. You may know who I ve been watching.

www.POOLCUECASES.com May be a new WEB Site, but these Innovative Products Company cue cases were originally designed and sold nearly 18 years ago. Since then approximately 1000 cases have been delivered to satisfied customers from

Seattle to Anaheim and east to Montana. Dale Caldwell, designer of the cases and chump you might remember beating years ago on the table, took a vacation from the game of pool and offering cases, but now is back playing the same bad game, though the cases are even nicer than before. What is Innovative about these cases? you might be thinking. The idea was simple, yet Innovative , since the cases combine a high degree of Durable Protection in a Stylish Package. They aren t bulky and they aren t heavy, but with closed cell poly foam padding on all sides, individual pockets for a butt, two shafts, and accessories, and water resistant exterior your cue will always be protected against the elements outside and clumsy drunks inside. Not only are the lines of the case unique and tasteful, but they also come in six colors to match your outfit or your mood (some people actually own more than one for these very reasons). Retailing at only $29.95, it s easy to afford this whimsical luxury. Two new colors are being offered this year, Camouflage and Khaki. These make a wonderful addition to the traditional favorites of Black, Navy Blue, Burgundy, and Grey. All are accented with Black trim and handles. Ladies, though roughly 85% have sold to men, the idea of offering these colors and style was to provide a choice that was less male specific. You can order cases online, over the phone, or from your local billiard supply outlet. If you don t see them offered, ask your retailer to bring some in he ll thank you for the suggestion.

As we all know in the billiard industry, when the summer months come, all inside activity slows down. But with a little innovation and support, the players of the WSPL BIG DOG have helped us develop a new playing format that has become very popular! The BIG DOG Division in Federal Way gives us an opportunity to have some fasst pace funnn. With a 3-5 format (3 players per team, per night), and a maximum of 5 players on your roster, we are able to start at 6:30PM and finish by 8:30PM. Then we move on to the 9PM Tournament at Players Casino ($5 entry $200 Added), or as most players do, make it Home in TIME to keep our better halves happy!! Although the WSPL requires that you be a member of a team in an established Division, we Only require that each player plays (4) regular matches on any (1) team during each session. The Players who at present are playing in the BIG DOG Division, will actually become the Teachers and Instructors of the players coming into the new BIG DOG Division, which will further develop the WSPL and soon to come NSOL. So, if you Really want to have some Funnn, and not stay out all night, please contact us at (253) 606-POOL, and let us answer your questions!! shots form ESPN s Trick Shot Magic. I was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base the first time I heard about this shot. It was in the mid 70 s. The way it was shown to me, the set up looked wrong for this shot to have any chance of being made. I thought the shot was impossible. I didn t pay any attention to the shot until I saw it again in Nick Varner s book. It still looked wrong in the diagram, so I called Nick and asked him how the shot was executed. He told me and I realized that the cue ball and object ball had to be farther away from the rail. Well through trial and error on my Gold Crown One, I finally figured the shot out. I would have to say I have well over 350 hours of practice and execution time during exhibitions in this one shot. This is my wife s favorite shot. Let s take a good look at this shot and give you some knowledge you may not have. This shot looks like it defies physics! This skill shot is a half masse. The set up for this shot is critical! You may put the cue ball and object ball F anywhere within the noted 1 x 1 square as shown in the diagram. The cue ball and F ball are froze together. If they aren t froze together the shot WILL NOT work! I m going to reveal where I put the cue ball for my setup. I put the cue ball 1 ½ ball spaces from the head rail and 1 ½ ball spaces from the long rail. Now with the cue ball tapped lightly into the cloth I freeze the object ball to the cue ball. The line of centers between the cue ball and object ball are pointed to the right of pocket F, at the long rail by pocket F. If you extended the line of centers through the rail it would point at about ¾ to 1 diamond up from pocket F. Why is this aligned so far to the right? It is aligned so far to the right because you have the full length of the table in which the object ball will throw to the left before it gets to pocket F, (contact induced throw) caused by friction. The aiming area for the cue ball is shown in the diagram. Seeing this shot is a half masse the butt end of your cue is usually 45 degrees or less. Mine is usually less. You will be cueing the cue ball at about 2 o clock for the masse effect to work on the cue ball. You don t hit this shot with a lot of power. This shot is usually performed with a moderate to medium hard stroke. The objective of the shot is to shoot the cue ball into F ball with a half masse. The cue ball will go around F ball as it travels down table toward pocket F. The cue ball will be made first in F pocket and the F ball will be made in the same pocket. You will need to make adjustments with aim and alignment of balls depending on where the object ball goes. I know some of you are laughing already. This is a great skill shot, and I would like to comment that I think George Middleditch executes the shot better than anyone when he was giving exhibitions. You MUST get the OWNER S PERMISSION to try this shot on their tables. Good luck and I hope you make the shot. Next month s shot will be from the Trick and/or Fancy Discipline and will have a D.O.D. of 7.

Stop Shot Practice By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy One of the most important shots to master for position play is the stop shot. It often allows you to plan several easy shots in a row with absolutely minimum cue ball movement. A stop shot is a straight-in shot played so that the cue ball stops dead at impact with object ball. This is usually done by starting the cue ball with some backspin (draw) which is rubbed off by the cloth on the way to the object ball. Struck right, the cue ball will loose its last bit of draw just as it reaches the object ball. On most straight-ins, there are many combinations of draw and speed that achieve this goal. You could shoot Shot A in Diagram 1 just below center and quite hard, or you could hit softly and as far below center as possible without inviting a miscue. Either one can get the cue ball to arrive without spin at the object ball. To see this, shoot Shot A using a stripe as the cue ball. This will let you see the spin rub off the cue ball as it goes down the table. First try the shot Bob Jewett without any object ball there just watch the stripe spin backwards, stop, and then start to spin forward when you play the shot with draw and moderate speed. Adjust the speed and distance below center that you hit the cue ball so that the cue ball is skidding as it passes the side pocket; the stripe will appear to be stationary then. Once you have the cue ball doing the right thing, add the object ball, and you ll have a perfect stop shot. Try a few different speeds to see which works the best for you. In Shot B is a progressive practice drill for stop shots. On each shot, the object ball goes in the spot shown. The cue ball, in the mean time, moves half a diamond back for each good shot, and a diamond towards the object ball for each unsuccessful shot. The requirement is to make the object

ball and leave the cue ball covering the ghost ball at least partly. (The ghost ball is where the cue ball needs to be at the instant of contact to make the shot. It is also called the phantom ball. It s imaginary, not a real ball.) Keep track of the cue ball s progress with acoin. If you can t get very far with the strict requirement, relax it a little to allow the cue ball to drift up to a hand-span after contact, but don t allow any forward motion. Your score in progressive practice drills is according to the position of the cue ball after ten or fifteen shots. Just shoot a rack or so of the drill, and then note the position of the coin. Remember and this is hard for a lot of players to move the coin forward or backwards after each good or bad shot. For more into on progressive practice, visit the SFBA web site at www.sfbilliards.com, and print out the handout for the Basics Clinic. It s free! Please Note: The August diagram was accidentally left out of last month s issue. You can see the entire article and diagram online at: www.onthebreaknews.com/ jewett1.htm

BUYING YOUR FIRST POOL CUE By: Craig W. Rittel owner of Full Splice Billiards 10606 Bridgeport Way, Lakewood, Washington 98499

Hello, and let introduce myself. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri and I have been involved with this wonderful sport since the early 1970 s. I joined the US. Army in August of 1980 and retired 1 February 2003. I have always loved this sport and upon my retirement I had to make a decision what to do after the Army. With a lot of help and support from friends and the local billiard community I started selling billiard equipment in June of 2002. First from my home and then on May 28th I moved my business to a 750 sq ft storefront located in Lakewood, Washington. Lets start at the beginning, how should someone choose their first cue? This question is by no means simple and will vary depending on who is asked. But from my experience the best way to accomplish this, is to test hit balls with a variety of cues that have different weights, different joints, and different shaft sizes. Keeping this in mind I would make the following recommendations to anyone who wants to purchase a pool or billiard cue. Recommendation 1: Gather as much information as possible about cue sticks and never buy a cue stick without first testing hitting balls with the cue you intend to purchase. Some people may say that this really is not important to me because I do not know one cue stick from another and I really cannot feel a difference between cues. While their statement may be partly true, it is also incorrect, because who knows better how anything feels than the person with the cue in their hands and knowledge about a subject or not will not change how something feels. The most common mistake people seem to make when purchasing a cue stick, is made when they enter a Billiard or Gaming retail store without researching what they intend to purchase. This is further complicated by employees who are selling products for a retailer that have in most cases no more knowledge than the customer they are trying to sell the item too. In most businesses a sales person must be very familiar with the products that they sell. However, when it comes to billiards there are many retail outlets that no longer only specialize in Billiards Equipment. Most large retail outlets today sell a broad range of products from pool tables and accessories to pin ball machines. This lack of specialized knowledge is very easy to identify in the following manner. In most cases all you will have to do is ask the sales person if you can test a particular cue stick by making some shoots with it. In many cases the buyer will find that, retailers do not even have a pool table set up for this purpose ( How can you purchase a cue without making some shots with it). Next ask the sales person where the chalk is, this in most cases will get you a startled look and the following answer, we do not allow our customers to chalk pool cues in this store (How can you test a cue without chalking the tip) and by the way please do not shoot too hard if you damage it you bought it ( if you are told not to shoot hard because you may damage the cue, it may be time to think about another brand). But all is not lost; because this is the easiest problem for the player to fix, either the equipment retailer will allow you to chalk the cue and test hit some balls with it, or you should serious consider making a purchase somewhere else. If enough people demand to be treated correctly things can change. The feel of a particular cue is the most important factor in a cue selection. This factor will determine more than any other, the way you will play using this cue and this is not influenced by the price of the cue. The feel of a cue is known to most accomplished players as the cues hit. The way a cue hits, is a direct reflection of the materials used in construction, the construction techniques, the balance and weight of the cue, along with the cues tip. Hit quickly translated, is the harmonic vibrations that resonate through the cue when the tip strikes the cue ball. Keeping this in mind, it should be easy to understand that no two cues will ever hit exactly alike. I can not even recall how many times I have heard people say WOW I need to get one of those cue sticks, and while two identical cues will in most cases have a similar hit, the hit will never be identical. There will always be minor differences in the way a cue feels when it strikes the cue ball. In addition, what is a good hit, weight, and feel to one person is not always the same to someone else. This is why without test hitting balls with a cue the buyer in many cases is unsatisfied after the purchase. Recommendation 2: Check the cue for defects in the cues construction. This is not a very difficult process. First roll the shaft on a flat surface (Preferably on a pool table) and look for any wobbles in the shafts roll. When looking for wobbles check the shaft from above and from the side. Next roll the butt of the cue. When checking the butt of the cue (Buying First Cue continued on page 30)

What Comes Around Goes Around

In the 50 s pool tables in the taverns began to disappear and shuffleboards took their place. Dan and I went from town to town buying the old tables for $50 to make room for the Long Boards. The tavern owners thought they Pat Sheehan would do well because Roeola and American Shuffle Board had organized leagues throughout the World. They had spelled out a system for tournaments and at that time pool was a matter of match ups between players. The pool tables sat vacant while the Boards kept the customers occupied and on league night the place was jammed with players and spectators. The problem with shuffleboard was the game didn t offer enough of a challenge and the money stopped going into the scoreboard when the bartender turned his back. The game could be played for free if you could count past twenty. The top contenders found they played better when they didn t drink, so no beer was sold. Valley Mfg. came up with the little bumper pool table which took up a small space and you couldn t get the ball out without inserting the two dimes. The owners loved them and it put cues back into the players hands. Small tables with six pockets were the next step. They were as small as 2 ½ x 5 and 3 x 6. So they didn t take a lot of space and the six pocket bar box was on its way. The Office Tavern in Grants Pass had the first 2 ½ x 5 I had ever seen and it would take in $240 to $300 a week, two dimes a game. It looked so small with that big cue ball and 15 2 ¼ balls on it, but the owner told us cover it every time you go through town. So it got a new cloth every 60 days. In every town, every tavern had at least one table and the Shuffleboard shuffle began. Not many survived except as bar tops. Got to make room for more pool tables, because of the local leagues and Valley, Bush, APA and BCA pool is now unstoppable. One of the few Roeola Boards survived in Lebanon, Oregon at Teri s Town Tavern, 679 Main Street. Teri Wiser contacted my son and he stopped in. She had tried for three years to find someone to refinish it, so I went down. It was a mess. It had not been finished since 1984. What was left of the lacquer was brown. The critical ends were bone and the maple had begun to shrink. She also had a pool table and it needed a lot of help. The lines were all gone so the board had to be stripped to bare wood and sanded. I had never refinished a board in the field and it had been 25 years since I did one in the shop, but I liked Teri and what she was trying to do in the tavern. So I packed the shop into the pickup and Mohammed went to the Mountain. It was great to do 360o turn from having shuffleboard take the recovery work away from us and now we were working on the Long boards. The bad part is that you can t strip finish or pull lacquer when the place is full of people with cigarettes in their hands because they would be passing out with the fumes. That means starting around 2:30AM, so we covered the end cushions with the original color green and covered the pool table. As soon as the place closed, we stripped the Board and began to sand, and sand, and sand some more. We leveled the bed with our machinist level until we were within .005 of an inch. Then a coat of lacquer sanding sealer and more sanding. Time was running out, the sun was coming up when the first coat of lacquer went on. The place opened at 7:00AM to the aroma which lingered for breakfast. I had to return because it takes 2 hours between coats with brushing lacquer. I didn t mind because Teri has the cutest bartenders and I enjoyed Albert (From the Work Bench continued on page 27)

The International Challenge of Champions held at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT on August 14th -15th sent the winner of this event home with $50,000. This 2 day event with an 8 player field was brutal. The first round was a single elimination race to 7 which put Ralf Souquet, Chin-Shun Yang, English Champion Daryl Peach and Nick Van Den Berg out of the race. Round two was two sets of 5 with a single game tie break. Canadian 9-Ball Champion John Francisco Bustamante Horsfall faced Earl Strickland and won the match 5-4, 2-5, 10. Also facing off in this round were Francisco Bustamante and Reigning Champion Efren Reyes. Bustamante won easily over Reyes 5-3, 5-1. Now the challengers for the finals were ready, Francisco Bustamante and John Horsfall. Bustamante won the first set 53. Things looked grim for Horsfall in the second set but he didn t give up. He battle to a 3-2 lead after Bustamante jumped off winning the first two games. The match tied at 4-4 in the final game of the set Horsfall came out on top after a great 2-4 carom shot which gave him the opportunity to run the rest of the rack, which forced a one game tie break for the whole $50,000. Bustamante won the lag, and ran out the final rack without giving Horsfall an John Horsfall opportunity to come to the table.

Chad Aldridge Memorial Tournament

A memorial benefit 9-Ball tournament for the Aldridge Family was held August 10th at Richie D s in Mountlake Terrace, WA. Fifty-nine players came out to play, over a dozen of which were highly noted names. Such as JD, Rich Geiler, Bill Cress, Kris Iverson, Raul, James Davee and several others. One player in this bunch was Chad s own uncle Dana Aldridge, who went on to finish second in the tournament. Before the kick off of this tournament we had a moment of silence for Chad. You could ve heard a pin drop. I ve never heard a sports bar so quiet. Ever. We then had a players meeting where we started a raffle for a custom Russ Espiritu cue donated by Sean Finney. Everybody there graciously purchased tickets to benefit the Aldridge Family. In the end, the cue brought in $845 in tickets. Almost $50 more than the original price of the cue. Hats off to all those who helped make this happen, along with the people running the tournament. The tournament ran all day until 2:00 am. Below are the results of the tournament. 1st 2 nd 3 rd 4 th 5/6

Thanks goes out to Dave Lauer, Greg Brown and Pete Phillips for directing the tournament. Sean Finney for donating the custom cue. Special thanks to all 59 players who signed up to play. Dana, it was great to see you not only come out to the tournament but to play and finish second. Look for this tournament to become an annual memorial tournament.

The Pool Whisperer . . . . Lance McGill: Ongoing Education Send your questions about pool and game situations to: poolclass@webtv.net or mail to: McGills Billiard Academy - 1306 NW Hoyt St B1 - Portland, OR 97209

In researching for a class last week, I came across an article by Grady Mathews. It feels strange to print his last name when, in the pool world, you say Grady and you ve constructed yourself a pretty solid and well understood sentence. Grady was saying that one of the problems for him when he began writing articles was that it was seen by others as, A way for him to toot his own horn. The rest, and the body of the article, was about a game of one-pocket.... that he lost. At the start of the end game he was certain that he had the game well in hand. In his words, he was, already spending the money. A routine win. And then, through the other player s creativity, the game is turned. Even the best can t beat STRATEGIC CREATIVITY. Ironically, it seems that the only way to beat it would be to respond with even more creativity! It was a source of relief for Grady to include this type of loss and at the same time use it as a means of instructing the reader on the value of creating at the pool table. The first time I saw Grady, he was in a dive/rat-nest of a poolhall in Washingotn D.C. that most people wouldn t even pass on a parallel street. AND HE LEFT WITH THE MONEY. He s a certain kind of guy.

I ll follow that guy s lead. (I ll likely have spent time with Grady by the printing of the next one or two articles and I ll be excited to tell you about it.) My favorite loss remains one that I suffered when I was so good at 9-ball that there was no way in hell that I coulda beat any money player at one-pocket. The only reason I was playing was because mark had never played one-pocket on a 10 foot table. So I lost the lag (on purpose) and...he broke. If you haven t played one-pocket on a 10 foot table and you use the standard hit on the break, the balls are gonna, come out funny what I call a mis-deal. (But you can t fold our kinda cards......... insert smile here.) The other thing about the 10 footer is that its easier to make a ball in your pocket on the break so, the 15 ball sat hanging at the lip of his pocket. It s no exaggeration that this is the shot that I looked at longer than any other shot in my life. And in the end I chose to bank one of the balls that I knew he would be leaving me and jump the cue ball over the stack coming back 3 rails and freezing on the end of the stack. (nearly where the cueball was when I shot)

This is a good example of a shot that sounds difficult and looks like skilled execution. In fact, getting over the stack is easy and the 3 rails (ON THE 10 FOOTER) wants to go to the spot where the 2 end balls rack up at the games start. I don t have a kick at his ball so I know that this is one of those times where I gotta GO. So, that s what I do. I, GO. The banked ball goes in and the cueball gets over the stack lovely. At the 2nd rail I think that the speed also may be lovely. At the 3rd rail I know it is. Lovely I mean. The stone is comin in now....straight toward the 3 ball cluster that hides him and gives me a four rail shot at my pocket and a hit on his 15! Of course, I yell out, INCOMING! Now, back to the slow motion cueball that I just announced. There I am, just like Grady.... spending the money. I m out shopping. About 5 feet to go....and now everyone in the room not only knows what I shot, they re realizing that it s perfectly hit. 2 feet to go...one foot, and

now it s at it s last 2 revolutionswow! What a hit! It s approaching the balls it s meant to nestle with. Inches away and then 1 inch away. The smattering of applause begins...THEN, somewhere between that last inch and my shopping money the cueball hit a tiny spec of chalk... COMPLETELY CHANGED DIRECTION, never even hitting the 3 balls and froze dead up on the ball I was going to 4 rail next with a clear and easy hit on his 15. I have dropped my candy in the sand. And that s not a story about how I got robbed. It s not a bad break. It s a kind of loss that I don t have to go through again because it came and found me, and lucky for me it found me early. I had cleared and wiped thousands of areas where I knew that I was comin in sweet and I didn t do it that time. If you watch tapes of east coast players, we seem to always be picking something up off of the cloth between our nails or doing the wipe and sweep motion with the palm of our hand. I think it s a habit that comes from thousands of racks of straight pool. Whether that is the case or not, if I hadn t looked away form the table and gone to the mall, I would ve picked and wiped like I usually do. (McGill continued on page 22)

A Success Story

From: Mary Hopkin

KENT - They say transition and change is difficult. But for the Northwest Women s Pool Association, the transition to becoming one of the fastest growing tours in the Northwest has been as easy as sinking a 9-ball hanging in the side pocket. The NWPA board, lead by president Vic Valdez, was organized in Nov. 2001, after the American Cuesports for Women, the Northwest s only sanctioned WPBA regional tour, disbanded. Just a year and a half later, more than 70 women have participated in one or more of the nine NWPA tournaments held. Players have raised more than $4,500 for the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation. And now, the NWPA, Jonathan Denning of the Breaking Point, in Lynnwood, and Snohomish Co. Amusement Company, have joined forces to produce the richest woman s 9-ball Vic Valdez tournament ever held in the Northwest. At the NWPA s Chairperson final 2003 tournament, Oct. 11-12, at The Breaking Point, in Lynnwood, owner Jonathan Denning is adding $1,500 to the prize fund. In addition, Snohomish Co. Amusement Company has graciously donated $750 to the prize fund of the consolation tournament that will be held Sunday. I think the success has been phenomenal, said Valdez. We are currently attracting 40 to 50 players per tournament. The key to that success is held in the board s hands, Valdez said. Most regional tours are a single person operation and having a board significantly accelerates our capacity to get things done, he said. The board also includes Julie Valdez, production coordinator; Jo Woodward, financial coordinator; Tamre Geene-Rogers, tournament coordinator; and Mary Tamre Geene-Rogers Hopkin, media/promotions coordinator. Now that Tournament Coordinator/ Player Advocate the slate has been leveled and the ball is rolling smoothly, the organization is working on the future to ensure the success continues to grow. Our success from here will be measured in how we manager ourselves financially, Valdez said. The NWPA has created several multi-level sponsorship packages to help boost prize funds, which in turn will boost participation. If you increase the payouts, players will come, increasing our membership base, he said. RT9 Designs, a company that designs billiard art and clothing owned by Linda Pault of New York has 5800 198th St SW, Ste 19 Lynnwood, WA 98036

taken advantage of the NWPA s title sponsor program. The program allows small companies, like Pault s, to sponsor a specific tournament making it a WPBA qualifier. Pault sponsored the NWPA s fourth tour stop of 2003 at McQ s in Spokane. The tournament drew a women s field of 48, including players from Canada, Washington, Wisconsin, Oregon, Montana and Idaho, to its first tournament in Eastern Washington. The program creates additional prize money with adding additional financial burdens for room owners. Valdez is also working to form alliances with the eight other WPBA regional tours to create marketing Mary Hopkin Media/ opportunities for corporate sponsors. Not only will Promotions Coordinator it help us financially, but all the other regional tours, while giving corporations the opportunity to market directly to the main financial decision-maker of the home, he said. The NWPA is also creating billiard merchandise that will generate more revenue for the organization. This won t be merchandise just to market to our players, but we are producing merchandise that will have nationwide appeal, he said. Growth is important to the organization, which will continue to have tournaments along the I-5 corridor, but is looking to expand to the east to increase participation. Growth is important to the organization, which will continue to have tournaments along the I-5 corridor, but is looking to expand to the east to increase participation. The 2004 NWPA schedule will include another tournament in Spokane and likely organize a tournament in Boise, Idaho. Other programs have also been instituted to draw more participation from league, bar-table players. Jo Woodward Getting new players involved is a challenge for every Financial Coordinator regional tour. We are going to have qualifier for non-NWPA members in venues where leagues are played, said Mary Hopkin, NWPA media coordinator. The winner of the qualifier will get the entry fee into an NWPA event, plus their annual memberships into the NWPA and WPBA paid. The program will take the initial financial burden off the player and give the women an opportunity to see how they compete on the 9-foot tables. We re certain once they play an event, they ll be hooked and become a regular face on our tour, Hopkin said. Jeri Engh, of Wisconsin, plays on the WPBA tour and in regional tours across the country. For the past year, she Julie Valdez has been flying from her Midwest hometown to the Production Coordinator west coast every few months to play in the NWPA tour stops. The tour has a clean, solid feeling, Engh said. They have really paid attention to creating and maintaining high standards, while taking care of the small details. They have created a wonderful, positive atmosphere for the sport and the players.

I had the opportunity to witness first hand the NWPA Tournament Staff in action and was very impressed with their organization, professionalism and enthusiasm. I thought that I would get some impressions from other venues that held NWPA Tournaments and this is what I found. The Cue Ball - Salem, OR: Casey & Jim Lebold were both positively impressed with both the NWPA Board and the players that came to the tournament. They commented that the tournament was professionally run, had excellent prep work and follow through, very punctual and took care of everything. In regards to the players, their opinion was, very serious players, showed good sportsmanship, the level of play was high, everything was hassle free for the venue. The NWPA rated high with The Cue Ball and both Casey and Jim said they would be happy to hold another event there. Dr Cue Billiards - Shoreline, WA: Matt Jacoby thought the NWPA was great! He was very impressed with their organization and professionalism. It was a well run tournament. The players were friendly, appreciated the venue and conducted themselves very professionally. We would be happy to include them in upcoming events. McQ s Billiards - Spokane, WA: Clay Skidmore was so pleased with the NWPA he actually wrote a note thanking them (August Issue 2003) for having such a well run professional tournament. The best part was the comment he included from his staff, My employees had such a fun time serving you that they can t wait until next year. City Lights - Tacoma, WA: Andrea Saenz-Maes, herself a participant in the NWPA tour, shared the sentiments of the other venues, praising their professionalism, organization, and the good conduct and sportsmanship of her fellow players. All in all there were no negative comments about the NWPA. That in itself is a tribute to the organization and the Board s efforts to conduct themselves in a professional manner and have a great tour!

the Triple 7 s, Troy Pasley, Joe Nielsen and Jobie Gross of Canton, Ill. The Three California Amigos took home a first place prize of $7,500; the Triple 7 s took home $2,700. The Three California Amigos are familiar with playing under pressure in this event; they have placed in at least the top two the past three years. In 2001 they claimed 1st in this event, and last year placed 2nd. It was great to be back, said captain Frank Almanza, we enjoy this event, playing together is great. We do play some tough teams out here, the competition gets harder and harder but we have a great time. Participants in the Triple Play event can be any combination of men or women with no Skill Level limit. The event was a modified single elimination format; the maximum field for this event was 128 entries. Matches were an individual race-to-5, best two out of three for the match. The Amigos claimed the first win of the night, Frank shot against Joe. Frank got off to a slow start as Joe had three wins to Frank s one, but Frank quickly claimed the next four games, quickly shutting out his opponent with a Break and Run in his third won game. Triple 7 s tied up the score winning their next match, Troy defeated Jose, but game for game they were tied up until the end, Troy also had a Break and Run. The third and final match gave the victory to the Three California Amigo s with Elias over Jobie, it was a fight to the bitter end. Both players kept the score even until the last possible match, with Jobie achieving one Break and Run. The competition was hot on the table when the best Triple Play teams went head to head.

APA President Renee Poehlman

Let the Games Begin! Opening Ceremonies for the 9-Ball and Ladies 8-Ball Division kicked-off as APA President Renee Poehlman welcomed the 222 9-Ball teams and 62 Ladies teams to Las Vegas. She also thanked the companies that sponsor the APA, Cuetec Cues, Michelob AmberBock and Diamond Tables for their support and enthusiasm of pool. She also recognized the hard working tournament staff who, without them this tournament wouldn t happen!

We just came out of the loser s bracket, we only had one more loss and that was it, but we pulled out of it and we are still in, said Kristin Eisen. R E S U R R E CT I O N by: Dean Shane Cassem

About the Author Dean Shane Cassem Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and

out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and

returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough,

Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shane s web sites at; www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

across the counter. Carter, she gasped. Her eyes widened. My god, what happened to you? Long story, I muttered, what table? Sixteen, Ronny Spellman s waiting for you. Pause. Better get over there. . . if you can. She reached under the counter, pulled out my cue case and pushed it over to me. Pause. You alright? Nod. Yeah, think so. You see Lauterette or Linda Jo, tellem I need to see them right away. Sure, Carter. Table sixteen stood in the far left corner. Spellman was practicing lags. Five-five and in his late thirties, he was bald on top, wide statured and weighed in at around two-eighty. His pudgy face was fair, his straw brown hair light and shallow on the sides. He had on a dark brown parka and blue jeans. He looked up, stared at me as if I was a refugee in the wrong place, and kept shooting. I m Keating, I said, thanks for waiting, had a little accident. He shrugged, then lumbered around to the head string, grabbed the cue ball and said, let s play. Unpacking my cue, I screwed the joints together, and readied myself for battle. The war had begun. An hour later, I d won the match. Lauterette and Linda Jo had returned and raced off to the apartment to get me a change of clothes. Spellman proved a capable opponent. But missed two shots he should have made. Both shots cost him games and allowed me to win the match five games to three. Thanks for the clothes Joe, I said, with a thumbs up, then rushed off to the restroom. On the way, I noticed that Danny the Brat was winning handily on table six. Two more wins and I d be in the finals. More importantly, my confidence had returned. Of that I was sure. My stroke had returned home. DANNY THE BRAT COULD PLAY POOL, AND PLAY IT WELL. His protruding front teeth and unkempt ways paled against the grace and agility he showed around the table. He stroked the balls smoothly, treating them as his

children, talking to them as if alive and responsive. We were at the feature table. I had made the finals. The winner would represent Sharky s at the state level in the Galleria. Danny the Brat was my opponent. Kid s good, real good, Joe muttered. Nod. I sat with legs spread on the bar stool, my feet on the rung, the cue resting against my thigh, it s the way the competition s going to be at the Galleria. Keep an eye on the Brat, I said to Joe, then crossed over to the bar for a cup of Java. Danny had backed off from the table and was sipping on his tomato juice as he thought about his next shot, so I took my time. From my view, it didn t seem like he was going to miss anytime soon. Feelin better? Lilly asked,

charging over. Nod. Thanks. Bout some coffee? Just made a fresh pot, she said smiling. The crowd behind me, like a wave of reverberating energy, moaned. Wheeling around quickly, I watched as the Brat angrily slammed his stick down on the table. It whipped up and rattled like a piece of bamboo. He sounded off a angry expletives and I knew he d made an unforced error. Juking through the crowd with coffee in hand, I passed through a forest of elbows and eyed the table. Danny had left the eight in the door of the corner pocket. The remaining balls, all my stripes were spread on the table. Handing my coffee to Joe, I smiled small, picked up my cue and studied the table. Then, confidently I

In Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former Special Operative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles. Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. He enrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, Joe Lauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love for the game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two finds Keating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his former passion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell and old Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy at only eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cues out of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three has Keating working on his game in Sharky s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. A verbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. Later Linda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approaches Keating while he practices. Part Four continues as Keating befriends Linda Jo. As he leaves Sharky s another confrontation almost develops between Keating and Danny the Brat s cohorts. Later, Keating, Lauterette, Linda Jo, and Elizabeth anxiously await the pairings for the Texas Prelims. The story continues as Keating and his first opponent, an Asian pair off in an eight ball race to five. In Part Five, Keating beats the Asian handily and wins a testy second match. Given a schedule break, he then skates out for a burger. The Brat s cronies confront him in the parking lot and Keating deals with the two bullies. In Part Six, someone steals his Corvette from the Galleria parking lot. Short on time, he runs to Sharky s, is run down by a biker and injures his leg. A kind old man takes him back to Sharky s just in time to make his match. The story continues . . . I HOBBLED INTO SHARKY S AND STRUGGLED TO THE COUNTER. A high-pitched voice sounded through the speakers, Last call for Carter Keating! Lilly, I m here! I yelled

We ll be doing diagrams and solutions next issue. What follows are the questions that I thought would build the most interesting article and at the same time serve as sources for immediate improvement. And in this article THE BREAK again offers some of that EXCLUSIVE information that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Let s get to that first. In some billiard games there is a position and play known as nursing, or, the nurse. Simply put and for easy understanding, nursing the balls means keeping 2 object balls together on the rail and continually, scoring off of them as you nurse them around the table. The best players could seemingly score straight through to Monday morning and Vic had to leave for work. Again, for easy understanding and simplicity, 2 things you need to know about the nurse. There were certain areas that the nurse would be starting from. Likewise, there were problem areas where the balls would be more likely to leave the rail. The more fractions of an inch that the balls moved away from the rail the more likely you were to lose the favored position. So a certain kind of skilled player would stand at the APPROPRIATE corner and practice various masse shots. Innocent enough, right? A world class billiard player practicing masse shots. At the end of this innocent activity there would be 20 minutes worth of divots on the table spreading out over a space of about 8-10 inches. It just so happens that the nurse would be starting from that very area. That area, for the rest of the day would function like a gutter and be of enormous help getting balls to the rails. Then, as if that weren t enough help...they brought balls back to the rail that otherwise would ve been away! THEN, a certain kind of skilled one-pocket player would take this information to the gold crown and practice masse shots from his pocket...marking the short and the long rail near his hole! Marking them with a temporary trough. A gutter leading right to his hole and holding more of the balls that may be hit with one or two revolutions more speed than he intended! You can ask, Gonzo which pocket he prefers and then include giving him that pocket (all night) in the propositioning. You can get this done during a rest or a time out you take. You can use it to gain the advantage in the last game. A lot of people go pee before the last game, you might as well practice something while you wait. There s lots of creative ways to get this in, especially on your home court. It just so happens that we got a question this month asking why there are French words in pool and specifically masse? Around 1805-1807 a Frenchman named Mingaud introduced the leather tip to the game of billiards. One of the strokes made possible by this novelty was a stroke where you hammered directly down on the cueball. The French verb for hammering is masse. The question associated with this came in 4 times. How did billiards come to be known as pool? Again, the origin is French. POULE-which loosely translates to a collective bet. The poule rooms were where the advantaged went to bet on horses and in between races pooled their money and bet on billiard matches. Billiard parlors in France were called exactly that, billiard parlors and poule rooms were hardly associated with billiards other than the table on the premises at the horse tracks. Poule became pool after the game reached America. And I was asked in person this week what is the one thing that I would suggest to someone if I could only offer one thing? I told the young man that that is an easy answer for me. Add stillness to your game. I directed him to last month s article where that is the last sentence verbatum. Here I decided to give 2 other answers more worthy than my own. When BATA was asked that same question he said, Concentrate. Concentrate and always look at the table. (I translate this to him meaning always read the table. What I call always coming to the table knowing where you can do business.) BATA continues, The cueball is the key, learn to move the cueball and the shot making and the rest will come easy. BATA, ( the kid ) is known in the United States as MR. REYES. And now, Willie Mosconi s reply to the same question: Don t waste time. Only play people that play better than you play. I said to a few people and even in the interview for last months article that I don t and never did practice, I just played all of the time. It will likely surprise and interest you to know that Efren doesn t practice either! Check on it. Not a lot of funny parts in this articles so, here we go. AND IT IS TRUE. I think that it was in Iowa. I know that we were in the Midwest. And almost certain that it was Iowa. There was in the 70 s and early 80 s a lot of talk about who had the best stakehorse. And the talk was volatile and seemed constant. Well, Jim Rempe not only got the nod for having the best stake horse, he irrevocably removed the possibility for any future speculation! He came into the venue on a horse! A real live horse! Horses come with saddles, saddles come with saddlebbags and so he came. With saddlebags STUFFED WITH CASH. You can t write and create stuff that can come close to what the truth is around pool. That s the funniest thing I have ever seen that wasn t in a movie. It s not just real life...it has the added edge of being real life around POOL. just like you and i, soon - mcgill

CASCADE POOL LEAGUE

STARTS ITS 6TH YEAR on September 10th & 11th By: Andrew Monstis and Sassy Campbell

You only have a few days to get involved. We start in a few days, September 10th & 11th. Have you ever asked yourself what a pool league should be all about? Thanks to the participation, support and input from all our players, we are coming closer and closer to what for us is the answer: To have fun, test ourselves in competition, create experiences to remember for a lifetime, be part of a community of friends, and become a pool family. Cascade Pool League is in its 6th year in the Portland, Oregon area, operating year round. CPL is both BCA and VNEA sanctioned. You don t have to be a great player to play in CPL. Anyone can be on a team and there is no ratings cap. We welcome all of you to get your teams together and play. All our tables are open on league night, and traveling division players receive a drink ticket. No matter what league you choose, we are glad to see you all out there playing and wish you the best. Our Captain/ Player meeting Was August 23rd NEW LEAGUE INFO CPL players will be happy to know they will not have to miss the end-ofseason Awards Bash this year due to other pool conflicts. The date this year was coordinated with APA, and will not conflict with its February Regional event. Beyond the fun and the thousands of dollars of awards and prizes at the Bash, this year we will be raffling a custom $2,500 7-foot pool table, courtesy of Dave Randell. Dave owns Bigfoot Billiards, a table manufacturing and table recovering company (503-680-2314). The table will be on display at On The Wire at 371 E. Columbia River Highway in Troutdale, Oregon. Sorry, but only CPL members are eligible to purchase raffle tickets throughout the league season. The drawing will be held at the February 14th Awards Bash. Someone will have a very happy Valentine s Day! Dave says if desired, the winner can upgrade to an 8-foot table. STARTING SESSION 8-Ball starts September 11th, giving returning players previously qualified 2 weeks of play to qualify for the fall 9-Ball Regional at Chinook Winds in Lincoln City. League will be on both Wednesdays & Thursdays. We hope to have a couple of traveling divisions and several in-house divisions from the Columbia River south to Oregon City. Divisional sessions will be 14 weeks followed by the Interdivisional Tournament of 5 weeks. REGIONALS The entry deadline for the WBPPA 9-ball Regional is September 24th. New players not having the required 8 weeks by then will have to wait for this event next year, but you ll have plenty of time to qualify for the 8 Ball regional in late February. There are significant changes to upcoming WBPPA BCA regional events. At the 8-ball event there will be a singles division for Seniors, and the Men s Open Division will be split into an A Division and B Division. This will really help spread the money around! And, all events will be non-smoking. BCA NATIONALS RESULTS CPL congratulates all players who made it to Vegas for the 2003 National Championships. In particular, we congratulate the following players who had outstanding performances. In a field of almost 1900 men in the Open Division, David Randell took a break from his new custom table manufacturing business to blast to the top one percent of the field, finishing 17th. Congratulations to a new National BCA Master! Also finishing extremely well was Owen Grady, an up and coming young player who finished in the top 3 percent at 65th. Mike Stevens, another player to watch, finished in the top 10 percent. Mike also stayed in Vegas with some other CPL players to compete in the VNEA International Tournament, where he cashed in both 8 and 9-ball. In team play, Table 32, captained by Kurt Hamm with fellow members Owen Grady, Chuck Mileur, Shane Verhaaren, and Paul Norman, came in 97th out of 700 in the Open Team division. Awesome! CPL team Lucky Bastids with Ivan Doty, Mike Stevens, Dave Randall, John Morabito and Andrew Monstis, played in the Masters Division and finished a respectable 13th. Get ready to rumble! Get your teams together now and join or sign up! Contact CASCADE POOL LEAGUE Andrew & Sharon (503-252-4215) and Kurt Hamm (503-310-6439). Be part of the fun! NO TIME LEFT. We are only Days away and are already organizing sign ups!!

CUETEC OFFICIAL CUE OF THE APA

Cuetec to Produce a Line of Official APA Cues From: Jason Bowman Public Relations Manager

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (July 28, 2003) - The American Poolplayers Association (APA) has reached an agreement with J-S Sales for Cuetec Cues to become the official cue sponsor of the APA. Beginning this year, Cuetec will provide the custom commemorative cues for the APA National Singles Championships held annually in Las Vegas each spring. In addition, Cuetec will also produce a line of exclusive APA cues that will be available only to members and League Operators, and will be introduced at the APA National Team Championships, August 15-23. Cuetec is an outstanding cue and we re proud to have them as a sponsor of the APA. We believe Cuetec will develop a wide-range of APA cues to meet the various needs of APA members, said APA President Renee Poehlman. We are proud and honored that APA has adopted Cuetec Cues as their Official Cue. More world championship matches have been won with a Cuetec Cue than with any other brand, and I am sure the APA players will benefit from this relationship. As our slogan goes Win with the Winners, said John Nusser, V.P. and General Manager of J.S. Sales. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. More than 215,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9Ball league play. Michelob AmberBock is the official beer of the APA and sponsor of the APA 8-Ball League and 8-Ball National Team Championships. The Diamond Smart Table, Simonis 860 billiard cloth, Super Aramith billiard balls, the Sardo Tight Rack and Cuetec Cues are also official billiard industry sponsors of the APA and APA National Championships. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards. One of the keys to the success of the APA league, administered by local League Operators, is The Equalizer*, the handicap and scoring system that makes it possible for me and women of different playing abilities-especially beginners-to compete on an equal basis, much like they do in golf and bowling. The APA produces three major tournaments each year-the APA National Team Championships, the APA National Singles Championships and the U.S. Amateur Championship-that, together, pay out more than $1 Million in cash and prizes annually! 4th Annual Pub 181 Main Event

Gresham, Oregon s Pub 181 annually hosts a highly popular and successful Main Event to kick off the 2003 - 2004 pool season. This year s qualifier tournaments begin September 20th and will run for 20 weeks. Last year entries increased with 139 players participating. The highlight of last year s Main Event was a drawing for a trip for two for 3 days to Las Vegas and was won by Chris Gattman. This year Pub 181 owners Bob and Liz Donaugh will give away another trip at the finals on February 8th. This year s added money is expected to top last year s $2,100 add, and the entire field receives payback. Players receive points based on their weekly finish place. The top 32 point earners over the 20 weeks are automatically entered into the Main Event on February 7th and 8th. The weekly format is a race to 3 on winner s side and starts at NOON every Saturday with a $6 entry. The top point earner will receive a $100 bonus and to date, B players have won this every year. Whereas A players don t receive bonus points, B Players are eligible to earn bonus points after they have played 12 weeks and again at 16 weeks. This event gets better every year. The 32-player Main Event field may be increased this year, depending on the number of qualifier entries. It promises to be a lot of fun, so mark Pub 181 across all your Saturdays on your fall/winter calendars. (The Main Event tournament date does not conflict with any other known tournament, as a courtesy to other establishments.) Pub 181 is located at 181st and SE Division, Portland Oregon, 503-666-4457. Tournament Director is Andrew Monstis . See ya there!!!! OTB

BCn SIGNS ANHEUSER-BUSCH

AmberBock Brand to Assist of Growth of TV Network From: Rob Sykora, President Billiard Club network

ST. LOUIS, MO August 1, 2003 - Billiard Club network is proud to announce Michelob AmberBock as a series sponsor of Billiard Club television (BCtv) and the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship Series. AmberBock commercial spots will appear in each weekly program to further enhance its position as the beer of choice for pool players. BCn has put together a sharp TV series and we re happy to extend our overall association with pool by sponsoring this unique program, said Paul Simmons, Michelob Family brand manager. We look forward to helping the Billiard Club network grow and expanding the distribution of BCtv. Anheuser-Busch is a leader in the world of sports sponsorships including their support for amateur pool, said Rob Sykora, president BCn. AmberBock advertising on BCtv is an indirect endorsement of the professionals of the game and we are developing ways to pass that benefit directly to players themselves. The U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship Series can be seen on Empire Sports Network, Sunshine Network and FOX Sports Digital Nets. Both Empire and Sunshine are available to satellite subscribers nationwide, while FOX Sports Digital Nets Atlantic, Central and Pacific are available to all digital cable subscribers. SPORTSNET TO BROADCAST U S OPEN

13-Match Schedule Begins August 22nd in Canada From: Rob Sykora - Billiard Club Network

ST LOUIS, MO Billiard Club network announces a broadcast distribution agreement with Rogers SportsNet, a leading Canadian TV sports network, for the 2002 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship Series. The 13-week broadcast schedule begins the weekend of August 22, 2003 and runs through the end of the year. The series consists of 12 weekly one-hour programs and concludes with the two-hour final match. SportsNet is available to 8 million cable homes across Canada through four regional networks, East, Ontario, West and Pacific. Each SportsNet regional will carry the series based on their individual schedules. See the SportsNet website at www.sportsnet.ca for airtimes or check the Billiard Club network website at www.billiardclub.net. Canada is a hot bed for pool and we re happy to be on SportsNet during primetime hours featuring America s longest running most prestigious title, said Rob Sykora, president BCn. The U.S. Open series has a Canadian flavor with seasoned announcer Jim Wych calling matches and pro player Alex Pagulayan playing in the semi-final and final match. The broadcasting of the 2002 U.S. Open 9-Ball on SportsNet opens the door for more Billiard Club network produced events to be distributed in Canada. This is a fantastic benefit for the sponsors and players who participated in last year s event, said Sykora. The sponsorship investment made in the 2002 U S Open has proven to be very wise. Besides the branded name and logo impressions that appear in every weekly show during our cable distribution here in the states, sponsors are getting the additional benefit of the Canadian broadcast distribution. This also proves beneficial to the players who get increased promotional value and TV exposure, which in turn gives them name recognition when they go after those endorsement deals. Rogers SportsNet is a subsidiary of Rogers Media and Rogers Communications Inc, one of Canada s largest media enterprises comprising 30 radio stations, a televised home shopping channel, a multicultural television station in Toronto, ownership interest in three cable programming services, 11 consumer magazines, 40 business periodicals, directories and information products, and a new media division that is a leading provider of Canadian Internet content. www.billiardclub.net OTB

Summer Jam Was Jammin By: Clay Skidmore

Spokane, WA July 25-27, 2003 I finally got board just directing one event at a time so I thought I would give myself a challenge. Five different events all in the same weekend. I know this is nothing new. It has all been done before. But it has never been done here. I only have nine 9 foot tables and five 8 foot tables. So to be able to pull this off I needed a game plan for myself, accommodating players, and a little luck along the way. Good to say, the North Star was shinning, and my plan worked to a T . The players were great, I did catch a little luck and the whole thing was over by 6:00 p.m. Sunday night. The players were kept busy and it got a little tricky but the event was a lot of fun. With the positive feed back from the players, I will do this event again. Thanks again and I hope to see you all over the Labor Day weekend. 9-Ball Results (32 players) $320 Oliver Acosta 1st nd $240 Jim Masterman 2 3 rd $160 Joe Horner $80 John Duclos 4 th th 5 $50 John Plunkett, Ken Fried $25 Tom Newborn, Bob Manchester 7 th 8-Ball Results (32 players) $320 John Duclos 1st $240 Oliver Acosta 2 nd 3 rd $160 Joe Horner $80 Mike Patterson 4 th th 5 $50 Dennis Brown, Jack Belcourt $25 Stacy Mallot, Bob Manchester 7 th One Pocket Results (12 players) 1st $180 Don Wirtiman $108 John Plunkett 2 nd 3 rd $72 Ken Fried 14-1 Results (13 players) $195 Don Wirtiman 1st 2 nd $117 Lamarr Doughtry $78 Terry Rohrman 3 rd Youth 8-Ball Results (9 players) $59 Danny Horner 1st $39 Travis Chelos 2 nd rd OTB 3 $10 Andrea Finney

Artistic Pool Clinic By: Staff

There is something new for the state of Washington. The first Artistic Pool Clinic. What is artistic pool? Artistic by dictionary definition means beauty, skillfully, and tastefully done, aesthetically pleasing... Relating to or characteristic of one who is skilled in public performance or one who exhibits artistry or skill in his or her work. Art is a skill or knack . Artistic Pool is the umbrella word for these skills and/or knacks . Artistic Pool has 8 disciplines. Trick and / or Fancy, Prop / Novelty / Special Arts, Draw, Follow, Bank/Kick, Stroke, Jump, and Masse. The first of three Artistic Pool Clinics will be held at Dr. Cue s Billiards in Shoreline, Washington on Sept. 27 & 28th, 2003. The cost for the clinic is $175. You will not be charged for table time. This is a two day clinic. The instructor for this clinic is Ken Sarge Ken Sarge Aylesworth Aylesworth who holds a World Record in Artistic Pool. Sarge s World Record is: Most points scored for the four hardest disciplines of Artistic Pool, (Masse, Jump, Stroke, Bank/Kick), for any Continental Qualifier ever held. He set this record in October of 2001 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower California when he competed in the 2002 North American Artistic Pool Championship. Sarge will be teaching the first three shots of all eight disciplines during the two day clinic for a total of 24 shot/challenges. The shot/challenges come directly from the 40 shot program that is used for the Artistic World Championship at the professional skill level. Each student will receive the 40 shot program. Sarge will be giving up numerous secrets that have cost him 10 s of thousands of hours of practice. This clinic is not just a knowledge clinic, it will be a hands on clinic where each student will execute all 24 shots. This clinic is designed for the intermediate/advanced player, but is open to anyone who wishes to learn. If you fall into one of those categories and possess a good stroke or a great stroke, this clinic is for you! I also heard that Sarge will be promoting and producing the 2nd Washington State Amateur Artistic Pool Championship in early 2004. If you would like to learn some Trick Shot Magic, you had better sign up and pay to reserve your spot. The class size will be limited. You can sign up and pay Jeff, Matt, or Chuck at Dr. Cue s or Sarge. For more information call Sarge at (206)719-2695 or talk to Jeff, Matt or Chuck at OTB Dr. Cue s, (206)365-1187.

the night bartender who also helped me put on the last two coats and another chance to talk to Teri Wiser. She has slowly been changing a dead horse into a Triple Crown Winner! In 10 years she paid off the mortgage on the building and the bar. In June she added a full service bar with liquor, has live music on the weekends and has a Blues band on Sunday night. For 11 years the biggest attraction has been the Crawdad Race. This year Crazy Legs won. Teri and I continued to chat and I found out that she owned the Bull and Brew in Milwaukie and before that she worked at Red s Coach Inn in Milwaukie. She and her Mom Leona, had waited on me for lunch in the seventies. It goes without saying, we all changed a lot since then. Speaking about Red s Coach Inn, the next day I covered the pool table at the Peanut Farm and Teresa Wooden, the manager s father and I had lunch there quite often. While I was talking 9 out of my 10 numbers came in on the Oregon Lottery for $4,500! So all in all I had a very exciting week. See you next edition.

Kingsmen Billiards Both singles and team competition for the weekend were broken down into 3 divisions: Youth Ages 9-13, Minor Ages 14-17, Major Ages 18-20. Male single events boasted a record 527 entries while the female singles set a new mark with 95 entries. 1998 was the first year the VNEA had a separate singles event for the gals. Who would have known that this group would evolve to nearly 100 competitors in such a short amount of time. The team competition rose from 146, 3-player squads last year, to a whopping 192 teams this year. That s an incredible 46 more teams! These great numbers represented a record 39 Charter Holders from a record 14 states and a record 4 Canadian provinces and record 10 players from New Zealand. This made up for a total of 814 entries in the team and singles competition. The Guiness Book of World Records can expect a call with these numbers. With Singles competition going strong all day Friday, the pool playing group was treated to a fun-filled Players Reception that evening from 6:30-8:00. Players were able to relax, grab a slice or two of pizza, slurp a soda and watch Dr Cue and The Ginger Wizard perform their highly energized exhibition in The Pocket. Once their stomachs were full of pizza and a priceless pool performance by the pros, the juniors would square off in the mini-tournament ring and play for beautiful Valley Cues (1st place) and Cue & Case Sales cases (2nd place). When the smoke from the singles competition finally cleared on Saturday afternoon, the following individuals were crowned 2003 International VNEA Singles Champions: Male Singles Competition Youth Division: Eric Pickar D & R Star Rochester, MN Minor Division: Ryan Stone Shaffer Amusement Dayton, OH Major Division: Dustin Gunia Amusement Service Lincoln, NE Female Singles Competition Youth Division: Rachelle Kuhnen Inter Provincial Amuse. Alberta, Canada Minor Division: Maryanne Pomare Valley Pool NZ Ltd. New Zealand Major Division: Dana Tonjum D & R Star Rochester, MN At 8:30am sharp on Saturday morning, Team Opening Ceremonies kicked into gear. Master of Ceremonies Brian Elliott (VNEA) welcomed the players and introduced many of the weekends dignitaries. Mr Paul Huebler who has contributed to the Junior program since its inception, was on hand to talk to the kids and share his vast knowledge of the sport. Also, Mr Claude Napier and his family from McDermott Cue in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin walked the tournament room floor sharing thoughts with the pool playing youth. McDermott sponsored the cues which were given to the top 4 places in all three divisions of the team competition. That s 36 beautiful McDermott Cues totaling nearly $7,000 in value. An awesome contribution. The hard-working crew of Barret Manut and Wally Howton from High Country Promotions did a terrific job with table set-up and tear-down as well as daily maintenance. Head Junior Referee Jim Woody Woodside ran a remarkably smooth tournament with the help of Nils McConnel from V.V.S. in Lincoln Nebraska. Valley s Dave Courington donated a gorgeous Tornado Storm Foosball Table to be raffled off to one lucky team participant. The lucky person was Liz Johnson from Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. Next, nineteen anxious youths participated as flag bearers in the annual Ceremony of Flags and the U.S., Canadian and New Zealand anthems were proudly played. Hundreds of the juniors participated in the highpaced Speed Pool Event and the following were crowned 2003 Champions in their divisions: Youth Division: Nick Pera (1.08.3 seconds) Valley Pool NZ Ltd. - New Zealand

Resurrection - Part 7

(continued from page 21)

pocketed all the balls, including the eight. Sighing in relief, I waited for a new rack. I had taken advantage and now the score was two one. Danny jumped to the foot string, slammed down the rack and began racking the balls. Lucky jerk, he growled, and ripped the rack away angrily. Eyeing the rack, I noticed the second ball down was loose. Lining up on the right side of the head string, I eyed the rack, cued whitey dead center, snapped my wrist down hard on the follow through and exploded the rack. The eight ball, like a little puppy crossing a busy street, eased out of the rack and strolled slowly into the left side pocket, avoiding every possible collision. When it touched the lip of the pocket, the Brat slammed down his cue on it and sent it flying across the table. Might ought to rack em tighter next time, I jabbed, as the railbirds applauded loudly. The score two two. Danny s eyes turned fiery red. His shoulders bunched up and his neck tightened. His eyes fixed angrily on mine as he racked the balls. The next two breaks were monumental. Fortunately, I took advantage and ran the next two racks. Score: four two. The Brat, already out of patience, was seething. If he d had a gun, he might have shot himself . . . or me. Lining up on the side again, I hit the next rack beautifully and watched as three balls went in on the break. My remaining balls were all clearly spread out on the table except for the thirteen, which was nudged in a cluster with the Brat s solids. Bout time, the Brat hissed, lucky jerk can t do anything wrong. Opting to play safe, I shaved the nine and rolled the cue ball down the table where it nestled solidly behind the eleven. The crowd applauded.

Even though the Brat had seven balls on the table, he was snookered. By now his temper had the upper hand. He eyed the shot then in frustration fired the cue ball into the rail hoping for a lucky roll. Instead, the cue ball caught half the four and nosed into the side pocket, leaving me with ball in hand. As I moved to finish the runout, the Brat took his stick and swept the remaining balls around the table, forfeiting the game. Score: five two. In game eight, black beauty, as though testing the Brat to the limit, marched directly into the corner pocket as though there was not another ball on the table. Score: six two. The Brat exploded. Screw you, man! he screamed, then twisted down his cue, grabbed his case and stormed out through crowd. I quit! he yelled, and never looked back. I looked at Joe and smiled. It s over? he said, disbelievingly. Nod. Yippee kai yea! He yelled as the crowd rushed over to shake my hand. Immediately, I looked for Elizabeth. If only she had been . . . Carter, a soft voice called out over my shoulder. Shifting around I saw her. Congratulations, she squealed gleefully. Her eyes big and bright. Joyful. Automatically, as our eyes met, I reached out and drew her to me. Thanks, I said, embracing her. For what? Everything, I replied, everything. Her body felt warm next to mine, and suddenly life felt worth living again. You did it, she said, you re going to the Galleria. Charley Sturgis would be proud. Yes, I said, I think he would.

Unpacking my cue, I screwed the joints together, and readied myself for battle. The war had begun.

Resurrection continues next month

BUYING FIRST POOL CUE

(continued from page 9)

bend down low and roll the butt slowly, look from the front to the back of the butt for any wobble or for the cues joint or butt cap to raise up off the table when rolled. This is one area most people do not check due to the belief that a cues butt will not warp, but in many cases when an assembled cue has a wobble the problem is actually in the cues butt. Once you have determined that the cue is reasonably straight check for defects in the cues finish. This is a very simple process take your hand and run it over all areas were there is wood and other materials that are joined together. Start on the shaft, run your hand along the cues shaft from the joint collar to the cues ferrule. Check to see if the ferrule is flush with the portion of the shaft that it is attached to. Then check the joint collar to insure it is flush were it is joined to the shaft, also check the joint to see that the material used is covered by the cues finish. Next check the cues butt, start at the joint to see if the joint material is even and flush with the cues forearm. Then run your hand over the cues points and inlays, to check that they are also flush and not protruding through the cues finish. Then check the cues wrap, make sure that it is tight with no loose spots, do this by griping the cue tight at the top of the wrap and slowly turning the cue in your hand while gripping it tightly from top to bottom. During this test there should be no movement of the cues wrap. When you have finished with the wrap, check the cues butt. You do this using the same method that was used on the cues forearm. Run your hand over the inlays to make sure that they are flush and not protruding from the cues finish. These are problems that are the most common encountered when buying a cue stick, however, they are not the only problems that are encountered this article is only designed to offer the basic information that is necessary. Recommendation 3: Do not over spend on your first cue stick purchase. What I mean by this is simple, cue sticks can cost from forty dollars to many thousands of dollars. While it is important to find a cue stick that is not defective and feels good to you when you are shooting with it, your first purchase in my opinion should cost no more than one hundred to one hundred fifty dollars including a case. That way a person can get a good playable cue that will last and more importantly will allow them to perfect their skills. Something retailers should consider, with this process in mind is a cue trade-up program. These programs are designed to allow players who have purchased a cue from a retailer to trade that cue in later for a more expensive model. It also in most cases assures the retailer of a future sale. The amount of allowance given towards the purchase of a new cue is based on the condition of the cue at trade-in. If the cue is as new or close to it full purchase price should be given toward a higher priced cue (normally a hundred dollars or more). This program is also great for new players to this sport. It allows them to sharpen their skills and as their skill grows to upgrade their equipment to match their new abilities with less cost. Recommendation 4: Shop around. Cues are like any other item you will purchase; they will have many designs, colors, and styles that are designed with buyers in mind. Prices can be different on the average by as much as 20% or more from store to store. Many production cue manufacturers will allow a retailer to advertise no more than a 20% discount off the suggested manufacturers retail price. However, with the advent of the internet buyers can get a good idea how much a particular item should cost, and while I do not recommend that a novice player makes their first cue purchase online, I do think that they can gather the necessary information they need to purchase a cue and they can get a feel for pricing a particular type or model of cue by using the information that is currently available online. Thanks for taking the time to read my column; I hope that the information is helpful. Any beginning player who uses this information, as a guide should be able to purchase their first cue and purchase a cue that suits their individual needs. OTB
