Tom Neil Is The 2007 Arizona Seniors State 9-Ball Champion Just like every year since it’s inception in 2002, this years Seniors State 9 Ball Championships were played at Main Street Billiards in Tucson. The 2007 edition started on Saturday, August 25th and ended with a Tom Neil victory on Sunday, August 26th. Thirty-two “seniors” entered the tournament which was non-handicapped and was a double elimination event with all players racing to eight games. After play ended on Saturday, eight players remained in the tournament. Four players on each side of the bracket returned on Sunday, all in the cash. About halfway through Tom Neil, George Teyechea Sunday’s play, four of the eight were eliminated but in the cash. Richard Troy and Jim Gray finished 7th/8th for second. while Jim Kobashi and Pete Lhotka finished 5th/6th. The four players 1st Tom Neil remaining and still with a chance to win it all were Terry Osborne from 2nd George Teyechea Phoenix and Al Gaudett, George Teyechea, and Tom Neil all from Tucson. 3rd Al Gaudett Playing on the one loss side were Al Gaudett and Terry Osborne. Playing

on the winners side, for the hot seat, were Tom Neil and George Teyechea. Al defeated Terry leaving Terry with a 4th place finish. George put himself in the hot seat with a win over Tom. Tom then defeated Al forcing Al to settle for third and earning Tom another chance at George. This time the match between George and Tom would be not for the hot seat, but for the championship. The finals were a one-race final with an extended race to eleven. Tom Neil defeated George Teyechea in the finals by the score of 11-9. Tom’s win earned him the title of the 2007 Arizona Seniors State Champion. George Teyechea settled 4th 5/6 7/8

A Dollar for a game of pool...what the Is about all I can say. I’ve watched the price go up from a quarter to fifty cents and then a few years back to what seemed to be the only question was why? - seventyfive cents. I know that a lot of places across the United States are a dollar most of these places are in bigger cities but not here in Bozeman, Montana. Is it because they need more money to recover the tables and most of the bars in the valley are only covered once a year, sometimes more, but not usually. Could it be that I’m just an old guy and don’t like progress. Or could it be that I feel a game of pool isn’t worth a dollar. How often should they recover the table, take better care of the table for the increased price? And if they did, would it go up again? Do you remember when a pool table was in a location to give players a chance to do something in between buying a beer or two? Is it supposted to be a money making proposition? Or is it supposed to be entertainment for the patrons? That is playing themselves or watching two or more good players put on an exhibition. What most bar goers call, free entertainment. I would suspect as like in most things we the people don’t like, we complain but do little about it. And within time the desire to play pool as much as we did before the dollar a game came in, we will be back playing as much as ever. If we stop playing it only hurts us the player, so there is a solution that I have resigned to: if the game is a dollar that means each player puts in fifty cents for each game played. There would be on more loser pays. This might give you more of an incentive to win the game you are playing, but maybe not. As always you will make the decision to play or not. Golf Pool By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy You may have heard of the game of golf that’s played on a snooker table. This game is something very different from that and a lot closer to the outdoor form of golf. I discovered this game while reading a very useful booklet called “The First Five Years of Chalk-Up.” This was published in the 1960s by the A. E. Schmidt billiard table company for rooms in their part of the country around St. Louis. Each month they published a new game for the rooms and other customers to try out. The rules of golf pool are simple. Any number can play, but a foursome is good. Each player begins with the balls positioned as shown for each hole. Bob Jewett He breaks from behind the line and tries to clear the table in as few strokes as possible. Shots don’t have to be called, and you can play any ball at any time. Record the number of strokes for each player for each hole. If you scratch, you have to spot any ball you made, add a penalty stroke, and take ball in hand behind the line. As in golf, the lowest total wins. Run this as a weekly competition, with a leader board prominently displayed by the table. If you find 18 holes takes too long, you can cut back to nine, with an 18-hole playoff for the four leaders. Par for the whole course is 82, assuming you are not going to make anything on the break except for the two par-1 holes, and you make one ball on each of your other strokes. There are several holes where you can play for a specific ball on the break. Hole 6 is a good one for a birdie — just play the cut shot — but the same idea on hole 8 doesn’t work as well because you will still have to break. Get creative. If you hit hole 11 from the back (off the end cushion), the head ball has a chance to go two cushions to the side pocket. On some tables hole 5 offers a chance for the corner balls to go around the table on four cushions and back to the corner pockets. Try various speeds and hits. Making a ball on the break on hole 4 is a standard one pocket shot — use draw. If you find some other good ball configurations, that maybe reduce the par to 72, send them in and I may publish an update. If you need a scorecard, let me know and I’ll send you a file you can print with the shots on each card.

How Not to Find Another Pool Player Pat Sheehan

You never can tell where you will find a pool player these days. On Sunday the 5th of august I got up at 5:00 am ready to get a lot of work done. I will miss Mass today because I have so much to get done before I go on the trip to So. Cal. and I was really booking. I mentioned in a couple articles that if you want to get a job done right do it your self. Pat Jr., Aaron Curti and myself had spent several days trying to get the Hedckman table that I wrote about last February back to a working table. Every thing we had done began to fall apart. I bumped one of the rails that I had been avoiding because the setting strip showed at spot where the setting strip was coming loose from the rail. Bang off it came. I noticed that the strip had not been jointed flat so I shoved it through the jointer. I forgot that we had made them out of maple instead of poplar. The Maple had a twisty end and it bounce off the jointer and my finger went in before the guard could close. Wham I knew that I w as in trouble. There were several words not suitable to print and I pulled back so quickly that the machine was only able to take a small bite. Blood squirted all over and I ran to the house to get a clean dishtowel to wrap them. It is a 30mi. trip to OHSU hospital but I made it in record time. Luckily it did not injure my funny bone

so I was in good humor. An IV of Morphine and we started a party. The hand surgeon I asked for did not want to be disturbed on Sun. morning so I had a chance to meet Dr Matt, an orthopedic surgeon. I was not about to complain for a stitch in time saves nine. Of course we got to talking about pool and last year he purchased a Golden West table. Of course I would much rather that it was one I built, but my second choice has always been Golden west. He got the fingers sewn up and the conversation continued on pool. He loved the looks of his table but he felt that it did not play as well as his friends. It was slow and very fuzzy . The ball wobbled side to side as it slowed down. I asked if he bought an upgrade in cloth but it was never suggested. It so important to give all the alternate suggestions. I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sold a table without Simonis, Gorina, or Maliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speed cloth since 2000 when I did a very expensive table for Brian Grant who was a star with the Portland Trailblazers. The interior designers picked a color that was not exactly matched by Simonis. It was a Gold tone. I told Brian it was a mistake and after the table was up for three weeks he got disgusted with the play and called me to change it. Dr Matt is at the same spot and we will change it when I get back from So. Cal, this whole story is a lesson in the Hurrier you go the Behinder you get. He got the restore bug on the old tables and has been doing it for a couple of years. He has a job in the real world but his passion is old BBC beauties and there are a lot of them in the Midwest. His first call was his opportunity to get a Kling and wondered if he should pay the price. It was reasonable so I told him to go ahead. He found a Naraganset and one that was so oxidized that we were not sure what he had. A bit of stripping (From the Work Bench continued on page 22)

Swart and Ben Farmer welcomed the field of 38 players by adding $800 bringing the total purse to $2,330. Early arrivers enjoyed a hot breakfast to order, now a standard offering on tournament day beginning at 10:00 AM. The addition of breakfast compliments an overall improved menu for CABC. Showing no signs of his extended absence from tournament play, eventual winner Amar Kang breezed through six matches to take the first place prize of $830. Old war horse Jim Blakeman took a 3-0 lead over Amar to begin the final match. I have been hearing for over a year now that the billiard industry is in a decline and there is no connection between the billiard industry and the pool players. Manufacturers are cutting back and laying off, the billiard industry corporations based in the U.S. also cutting back and laying off, too many examples that it would be unfair to name only a few. Retail billiard suppliers are finding sales dropping upward of 50% and more. Even my own retail store is suffering a lack of viewer ship through the summer of ’07. Yes, sales are down. I have been somewhat outspoken to the contrary that the billiard industry is in a decline. This is mostly derived from the trips I take to deliver “The Break” to Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Salem and returning home. Although summer has been slow as usual for pool halls no more than any other year. I do not find a lack of enthusiasm or do I find a lack of participation in pool leagues, pool tournaments or pool players. On a recent trip to Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, where the temperatures lie in the one teens that is 113 to 117 degrees. In many of the locations I went to, players were telling me of playing more nights in different leagues, playing in more tournaments and are excited about playing in the upcoming leagues. With a newfound friend that I had only spoken to many times on the phone, Dick Breese, he introduced me to owners, managers and tournament directors by the score. They themselves showed the same enthusiasm about the game that we all love. Perhaps the corporate world of the billiard industry through sniping, listening to corporate bean counters as well as mismanagement and bottom lines. Perhaps they should take a page from the most unsuspecting confidant that they would expect and that would be the pool players themselves. The recent trip to Arizona only bolsters my belief that the corporate entities of billiards cannot and will not bully, intimidate or tell us what we like and what we will have. Pool nation is strong and vibrant. Perhaps the corporate entities should invest in their grass roots of pool players, the pool leagues as well as professional and amateur pool tournaments. Paradise Valley Pool League E.O.S. Scotch Doubles Tournament

PHOENIX, AZ July 25th - On Wednesday night the Paradise Valley Pool League closed the season with another banquet & payout party. This session saw cash payouts to the players totaling $23,400. Following the banquet every year is the blind draw scotch doubles tourney that everybody looks forward to. On this night 48 players signed up for the race to 2 8-ball event. There were plenty of teams that were favorites after the draw, however, that never guarantee’s cashing Jerry Stuckart and Martin Ramos in this event. 1st timer Martin Ramos has only starting playing pool 6 months ago and was partnered with a veteran leaguer Jerry Stuckart. After moving from Wisconsin some years ago, this seasoned 8-ball’er took Martin under his wing and marched through the field of 24 teams undefeated. They got to the hot seat by wins over a Bye, Chad Lovelace/Duncan Barnhill, Aaron Purdy/Leandrea Gaff, Manuel Bella/Jim Money, and Larry Patrick/Tyson Cole(E.O.S. Singles Champion). Coming back to challenge these two in the finals was Bryan Sheperd of the 1st Place division A Kitty’s & Karen Burgess(3rd place division B). There tour through the field saw match wins over Monica Sisneros/Earl Scott, Dick Breese/Richard Bryan Sheperd / Karen Burgess Newman, Ivan Noriega/Aaron Scott before a loss to Larry/Tyson. After regrouping they continued their run on the left side of the board with wins over Dick/Richard again, Al Ruiz/Reyes Gutierrez & Larry/Tyson before their finals loss to the tournament winners Jerry & Martin. I must point out that Jerry placed second in last seasons Blind Draw Scotch event. On this note I have to give a huge thank you to Metro Sports Bar, our banquet host this season. Al Ruiz and staff really provided a first class venue to host our league’s biggest event. A large buffet of wings, sandwiches, taco bar & potato salad that seemed to keep coming wave after wave until you could eat no more was laid out. Metro also added $240 to the scotch doubles Larry Patrick / Tyson Cole tourney after all was said and done. For those of you outside the Metro Phoenix area, make sure that when you’re in Phoenix you come by Metro Sports Bar. Michaele Kedanis Wins Ladies 8-Ball

Alexander’s held a ladies only 8-Ball Extravaganza on August 4th and 5th, 2007. The tournament took thirty-two pre sign-ups. With six no-shows and four ladies on the waiting list, the final tally of the field was thirty. All eight rated players in the tournament raced to five games while all ladies rated seven and under raced to four games. The tournament was double elimination. Alexander’s played through the brackets, on Saturday, until only eight ladies Michaele remained. Four on the one-loss side and four on the winners side of the bracket. The four ladies on the one-loss side included Justine Bishop, Kristie Ortega, Leandra Gaff, and Kitty Carroll. On the winners side, Michaele Kedanis, Bernie Store, Sara Miller, and Holly Ryan returned. All eight ladies were in the cash when they returned on Sunday. As Sundays play continued, Michaele Kedanis earned her position in the hot seat with wins over Bernie Store and Holly Ryan. The final two on the oneloss side were Bernie and Holly. Holly then lost to Bernie and settled for third

place. Bernie advanced to the finals, against Michaele, faced with having to beat Michaele twice to win the tournament. Michaele, who had beaten Bernie in the finals of the 2007 AzBCA Ladies Masters State Championships earlier this year, kept the two set final in this tournament out of the picture when she defeated Bernie in the first and only set of the finals. The final match went hill/ hill. Sara Miller finished fourth, Kristie Kedanis Ortega and Leandra Gaff tied for 5th/6th, and Kitty Carroll and Justine Bishop tied for 7th/8th. The second chance tournament, on Sunday, was won by Liz Bernreuter. Justine Bishop finished 2nd in the second chance tourney. SACRAMENTO, CA August started with a huge Jamboree. Thirty Seven One Pocket players played for a purse of $1040, a huge field by any measure for a Monthly one day event. The 9 Ball tournament had 54 players for a total of $1850 in the pot for the players to compete for. The One Pocket event started at 1pm and finished around Midnight. Billy Palmer went undefeated on the winner’s side cruising to the $340 first place prize. On Sunday the 54 player field seemed to be on fire. There were plenty of Billy Palmer matches that were won with wide margins and very few hill-hill battles. Billy Palmer also breezed through the winners side with wins over Odom, Robert Aldana, Dan Russo, Jeff Gregory (9th), Austin Murphy (3rd) and in the Hot Seat a good win over the young Filipino Deo Alpajaro. Deo had wins over Chai Smith, JJ Cain (7th), Chris MacDonald (4th), Ralph Daloin (5th), John Avalos (5th) before losing to Mr. Palmer. In the last 4 years of Monthly Jamborees, Billy Palmer has won both event on the same 3 times, a feat that has not been duplicated even once. So, you’re thinking about taking lessons... Samm Diep (c) May 2007 If you have not already, there will come a time in your game when what you’re doing alone is just not enough. It’s then that you will consider checking out a pool class or taking some lessons. If you’re fortunate enough to live in a town where there are free clinics and instruction available, jump on it! That’s a great place to start. More often than not, those instructors also teach privately and you can get a good feel for their teaching style. If you’re not so fortunate or if you feel you need some more personal attention, you may want to consider private lessons. As a fellow player who has worked with a variety Samm Diep of instructors, here’s a list I’ve compiled with some things to think about when considering your new coach. Decide which are most important to you. 1. What are your goals? What is your purpose for seeking instruction? 2. Level of commitment? Are you looking for a coach/mentor or just lessons? 3. Knowledge & Experience? 4. Reputation / Referrals? 5. Personality & Communication? 6. Their own playing ability? 7. Cost & Location? What are your goals? Are you a beginner player, starting from scratch that needs help with the basic fundamentals? Are you an above average player that could just use some fine tuning? Or, are you an advanced player that would just like to work on patterns and strategy? If you don’t really know, a good instructor should be able to assess your game and prescribe the right medicine. To get the most out of your lessons, think about what you would like to achieve before you get in there. But remember to stay openminded to learning new things. Mentor vs. Instructor? What level of commitment do you expect from your instructor and from yourself? Depending on what your goals are with pool, you may feel you only need one lesson for now. You may just want to learn something fun and new every couple months. If you’re a more serious

tournament player, perhaps you want someone to travel with you and work with you on a more regular, frequent basis. This obviously requires a bigger investment from both parties. Whatever the commitment level is, you and your instructor should both be working towards the same goal. Knowledge & Experience? It may be tough to tell sometimes how much knowledge and experience an instructor has until you’re already working together. “Reputation / Referrals” can help in this area. A great coach does not need to have previous coaching experience in order to do a good job. They may never have given one lesson before, but if they have the knowledge and the heart to see you succeed, it will work. Reputation / Referrals? In the meantime, you can always ask around. As with any relationship, a coach that worked for one player may not work for another and vice versa. Do the research. If it doesn’t work out, try someone else. It’s not like you married them. Personality & Communication? This was important to me, personally, because I understand my learning style and I would not be able to work with someone that could not communicate well. The best players may not always be the best instructors because they may not be able to articulate what they’re trying to teach you. Consider how effective an instructor’s teaching style is. Their own playing ability? Like I mentioned before, the best player may not be the best instructor. However, is it important to you that your instructor be a better player than you? Will you still be able to learn from someone who may not be able to execute the shot they are teaching you? These are all important things to consider before committing to a coaching relationship. Cost & Location? Will these two words bear any weight for you when considering your new coach? Only you can decide. Only you can know what you’re looking for. My current coach/mentor works full-time as an architect who just happens to love pool and plays it incredibly well. He has a ton of experience and after months of picking his brain and playing together, I asked him if he would consider taking me on. We’ve always been on the same page about strategy and the mental side of the game. He’s organized and is a great communicator. We’re in touch on a daily basis and I feel very fortunate that it’s a good match. If you’re not so lucky, keep looking. Knowing what’s important to you will help. Last month I wrote an article that focused on pool’s fundamentals. In it I pointed out that there are only four things that are truly fundamental in the making of a good stroke. Those four things are: 1. Straight alignment, 2. Level cue, 3. Stay down, and 4. Follow through. Now it is time to talk about some things that will help to develop and maintain a good stroke. These things involve the stance, the bridge, the head, the elbow, and the grip, and they are the things that make up the actual mechanics that are employed in any given player’s style. At this point you might be saying to yourself, “Wait a minute. I thought all those things Roger Long were part of the fundamentals.” To that, I answer, no. If you read my other article you might remember that I said many things have traditionally been accepted as fundamental truths, but those things are not truly fundamental; they are merely accessories in the acquisition of good fundamentals. That’s because the particular way a player goes about getting his cue to go through the cue ball straight and level is of no real consequence as long as he indeed gets the job done. But at the same time, I feel that any player who practices certain recommended mechanical techniques will, in the long run, have an advantage over those who do not. Let’s look at a couple of examples of what I am talking about. If your swing arm, from the elbow down to the grip hand, points straight up and down as you set up for the shot, then it is a simple matter of pulling straight back on the cue, and then letting it go straight forward. But if you have an angular alignment in your forearm, it will equate to stick movement at an angle to the line of aim, and that will have to be adjusted in mid-stroke in order to achieve a straight-on-line hit on the cue ball. Not that this can’t be done; but why take the hard route? The same applies if you are in the habit of twisting your grip hand in or out, rather than letting it hang straight down. A twisted wrist puts a twisting action on the cue, and again, that is something that has to be compensated for in mid-stroke. There are a few other recommended mechanical techniques to go along with these two that can help facilitate better motion efficiency in the stroke, and next month we’ll begin presenting all of them in a little more visual detail. In the meantime remember, all good strokes may not include good mechanics, but good mechanics almost always make for good strokes.

Team Yuma wins Scotch Triples

There was a good turnout for the August Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards in Portland—16 players. Walt Lunsford came all the way from Moscow, Idaho, and ended up finishing second to our perpetual champion, Bob Zack. The Goldendale, Washington, contingent was represented by Wayne Milke and Greg Lawyer. Wayne was matched up against Bob Zack again, after losing to him 50 to 34 in the prior tournament, but couldn’t match that strong showing this time, falling 50 to 13. Nonetheless, it was better than anyone else did against Bob in the first round, and only Jesse Johnson did better in the finals round, losing 50 to Bob Zack 22 against the indomitable Mr. Zack. Although Bob couldn’t string together the high run he is capable of, he had quite a few runs of a rack or more with a run of 34 setting the high mark for the day. The final results of the first Sunday-of-the-month 14-1 Tournament were as follows: 1st $70 Bob Zack 2nd $55 Walt Lunsford 3rd $40 Paul Lemar 4th $20 Jesse Johnson High Run: 34 balls - Bob Zack The next first Sunday-of-the-month 14-1 Tournament at Sam’s Billiards is September 2, the day before Labor Day. A $2065.00 first place payout was up for grabs at the most recent tournament played at Alexander’s Sports Bar in Phoenix, AZ. The event was played on August 18th & 19th, 2007 and was scotch triples with a team maximum of (25) ratings points. All teams rated (25) or (24) had to race to eight games while all teams rated (23) and under had to race to seven games. The event was a double elimination 9-Ball tournament and was played on Alexander’s 7' Diamond Smart tables. Alexander’s increased the field from (16) teams to (17) in a effort to keep from having to turn any players away. Two teams from Yuma, Arizona, made the trip North to take a shot at the huge payday and one of those teams did indeed go home with the money. The Yuma team, consisting of Derick Cumm, Terry Tucker, and Tony Flores defeated the team of Tom Auston, Tony Norem, and Dale Teague in a one set finals. The other Yuma team, consisting of Pete Lhotka, Sean Brooks, and Gary Anderson took third. Charles Peten, Marvin Lawson, and Don Adams finished fourth. The Arizona pool scene congratulates all the cashers. A special thanks to the Yuma players for making the trip to play in this event. As noted below, the trip turned out to be well worth it. Billiard Education Foundation Awards Academic All-Americans

It was a proud day for the sport of pocket billiards as 39 of the 136 junior players competing in the 2007 Junior National 9-Ball Championships were given the BEF Academic All-American award. Medals and Certificates of Achievement were presented to each youngster by BEF Executive Director Laura Smith and Director of Program Development Dawn Hopkins at the BEF Junior Nationals banquet. The stage was overflowing with smiling recipients as parents savored the moment. The BEF supports and recognizes the student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and in billiard competition. Academic All-American honors are given to those who qualify for the BEF Junior Nationals, plus earn a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Have Fear Wins Open 8-Ball Championship Have Fear of Glen Burnie, Md., defeated Bridge Street of Fairhaven, Mass., 3-2 in the finals of the Open 8-Ball Division of the 2007 National Team Championships. The victory earned them $25,000 in 1st Place prize money! Bridge Street took home $15,000 as Runners-Up. Have Fear advanced to the finals with a victory over the Dominant Force of Houston, Texas. Bridge Street defeated the Cold Ones of Akron, Ohio to advance. The Open 8-Ball Division saw a record 689 teams compete this year.

9-BALL OPEN DIVISION The Way We Were Wins Open 9-Ball Championship The Way We Were of Trenton, N.J., defeated the Lethal Weapons of Chanute, Kansas, 52-28 in the finals of the Open 9-Ball Division of the 2007 National Team Championships. Their amazing run through the tournament earned them $15,000 in 1st Place prize money! The Lethal Weapons headed back to Kansas $7,000 richer for their outstanding Runner-Up finish. The Way We Were advanced to the finals with a victory over the It Is What It Is of Joliet, Ill. The Lethal Weapons punched their ticket to the finals with a win over Red Rooster of Philadelphia. The Open 9-Ball Division saw a record 333 teams compete this year.

The victory earned Refuse to Lose a $10,000 pay day! As Runners-Up, 8-Up didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go home empty handed either - they received $5,000 in 2nd Place prize money. Refuse to Lose advanced to the finals with a 3-1 victory over the Black Widows of Dallas. A 3-1 victory over Miss Underestimated of Seminole, Fla., secured 8-Up their spot in the finals. Paul Joko and Michael Stevens headed off the first game. Stevens making two consecutive 9-on-the-Snap breaks, captured the first four games. Joko took the next five wins, but Stevens recognized the competition and captured the last three, one rack earning an 8on-the-Break. Rigoberto Pena and Gary French squared off in the second round, Pena dominated winning seven points in a row. Highlights from APA Nationals WHEELCHAIR CHALLENGE Havard vs. Hans The APA 8-Ball Wheelchair Challenge ended Wednesday, August 22. After eleven rounds of competition the 64-person board had been whittled down to just two. Charlie Hans a SL 7 from Cincinnati, Oh., and 2006 Wheelchair Challenge Champion, was up against Jamie Havard a SL 4 from Lucedale, Miss The race was 5 to 2. Havard won the lag to start the match. Hans dominated the first game in just one inning. In the second game Havard turned up the heat for the win. Game 3 and 4 was in favor of Hans, who didn’t give the table up much for Havard. In the final game, Hans 2 ball hid behind the 8, after 10 innings and a number of safeties, both Havard and Hans freed the balls and Havard took the game, winning 2 - 3. “This event has just been awesome, I feel really good,” said Jamie Havard, “I played last year also, but this year was so much better, I came in and shot my best the whole time.”

8-BALL DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP Cues and Crown vs. Z’s Odd Couple The 8-Ball Doubles Championship concluded Friday evening with Cues and Crown, Henri Lemoi Jr. (SL5) and Corey McCormick (SL5) of West Warwick, RI up against Z’s Odd Couple, AJ Loyd (SL5) and Stephen Krotek (SL5) of New Stanton, Pa. The race was to four. Z’s Odd Couple won the lag and the table quickly went in Cues and Crown’s favor. The second game Z’s played a bit more strategically, setting up shots for one another, not giving Cues and Crown another chance at the table. The third and fourth game, Z’s captured, but one team did not dominate over the other, the match up was even. The fifth game was played with just as much caution, control of the table bounced between the teams until Z’s finally captured the win. The final score was 4 - 1.

9-BALL DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP Fobia vs. Fire-N-Ice The 9-Ball Doubles Championship concluded Saturday evening with team Fobia, Darren McCannon (SL5) and Joseph Gieseking (SL4) of Bloomington, Minn. up against Fire-N-Ice, Tammy Brathbury (SL2) and Stacy Gisclair (SL3) of Marrero, La. The race was 14 (Fire-N-Ice) to 38 (Fobia). Fobia won the lag and McCannon started the match. Both teams played level and calm, after the first rack the score was Fire-N-Ice 4, Fobia 5, and one dead ball. Fire-N-Ice started off the second rack, and played consistent until the end. Fobia made a few good safeties and managed to stay ahead of their opponents, but in the end Fire-N-Ice won 14 to 16.

A testimonial from his loving wife: I remember he was in a tournament playing John Evans and John was going to do a shot Don felt was wrong and could cost him the game. Don stopped John and explained why he shouldn’t do the shot and explained why he should do a different shot. John took Don’s advice and made the shot and won the game. People watching what Don did told him what a fool he was, “You gave the game away and you would’ve won”. Don told them he couldn’t see John make the mistake. Don has done this before stop people doing wrong shots. John was happy he won, but was grateful to Don for what he did. People come to Don to sell their cue sticks, cases, even pool tables because he’s honest and they know they will get their money. Don loves to make people happy and he’s right there if you need help. Merle and Boomer have to go to the airport, no matter what time, Don meets them at the airport and picks up Van (he call his van) laughing and picks them up, when they get back from Vegas. Don has had people ask him if he can fix dents in cue sticks. Don never hesitates, gets gloss out, goes to town and fixes the problem. If he can help other ways he does. I’ve seen him move people that couldn’t get help to move and Don’s there to move them. Players don’t have rides to tournaments or to leagues call and Don comes and picks them up. People at tables playing pool and having problems, Don will go off if he’s playing someone and go help that person. Don has a caring heart. He gets calls at all hours and Don answers the questions. The staff at Half Time have a saying that Don lives at the Half Time Bar & Grill because he’s up there a lot until late hours. I’ve been asked, don’t I worry and why should I as I know my husband. Don has a temper when shots don’t go the way he wants. He was taught, you do a job, you do it right. He’s not mad at anyone but himself - he’s very hard on himself. A lot of people don’t know Don was born with a clubfoot. He was born with his feet backwards and had to have many operations. The foolish doctor’s didn’t think he could ever walk. He wears a brace on his left leg so he can walk at times. Don is in great pain, his ankles really are in pain. You can tell by watching him walk and know its different but he never lets on. He is a man that cares about people and loves making them happy. He’s excited he won a free trip to Vegas for getting the most new teams in the league. Don does not run leagues down, each has a purpose he feels. Pick the one you feel suits you but don’t bad mouth leagues. He hates to see people abuse pool tables. He takes pride in the work he does to keep the balls and the tables ready for pool players. People have complimented Don saying, “It’s so nice to come to a place to play pool and see the condition the balls are in. I would like to add my two cents. I always looked forward running into Coyote because I know I have a game of pool to play and over the years we have become friends and that friendship I honor. Don “Cheese” Akerlow

League N o t es No FALL ACS LEAGUES TO GET UNDERWAY! As summer comes to a close, it’s time to start thinking about fall leagues. We have had quite a few leagues already playing this summer. The Midway in Oregon City, The Nite Hawk in North Portland, City Lights in Tacoma and some of the Central Oregon establishments have all been hosts to summer play. It seems to be a toss up as to whether pool players would like to take the summer off so to speak. Well for those of you who have been focusing on barbecues and other sunny day activities, I say dust off those pool cues! The month of September has leagues beginning in Astoria/Seaside, Longview/Kelso, Eugene/Lane County, Vancouver, Beaverton and a new Midway (Oregon City) league. Beaverton will also be running a Junior League for the third year. October will kick off Olympia, Federal Way and another Nite Hawk session. If you don’t see your area - don’t despair; some of your operators are still finalizing their schedules. Please contact them, or your league officers, show your interest and we’ll be happy to get you the information you need to participate. Remember for those of you who are true pool junkies and want to play in many leagues, your initial one time membership dues enables you to play in as many different sessions and different leagues as your heart desires. I look forward to seeing you all at the regional tournament. Speaking of which, the dates have been confirmed for the 15th through the 20th of April, 2008 at Little Creek Casino Resort. Events will include Scotch, singles - both 9 ball and 8 ball and 8-ball 4 person teams. Once again, our partnership with Little Creek and High Country Promotions will allow us to put on a great, professionally run tournament with added money as last year of at least $12,500.00. Lastly, don’t forget that as a qualified Pacific ACS member you are also eligible to play in the ACS National event in Las Vegas in June 2008. Aspiring architect wins “C” 9-ball Tournament By DAVID TELLER

SPOKANE, WA Nathan Neergard, a recent University of Montana graduate, prevails over 16 other players to win McQ’s “C” 9-ball tournament, beating Steve “Duke” Malinak of Spokane in the championship. Neergard lost 5-4 in the second round to Derek Gremmet. Neergard overcame difficulty controlling his ball speed, a couple of visits from the “scratch bug” and a few bad rolls to win his next five matches and advance through the loser’s bracket, getting back into the championship. He routed “Duke” twice by a score of 5-2 to take the championship. Bill Swanson made the comeback performance of the Tournament. He lost his second match to Neergard and won his next five matches in the loser’s bracket to finish fourth place. The top player female players were Sheila Moss, Gail Stensgar and Faith Merimoto. All three were eliminated in the same round but did not place. The tournament was held Aug. 4 in Spokane Wash. The tournament director was Bill Spiteri. The Double-elimination tournament was a race to five, both sides. It was played by BCA rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Red-Circle cue balls. Entry fee was $30. The races were to 5 on the A side, 4 on the B side, lag for break, no coaching, call pocket with modified BCA rules, meaning you could not win or lose on the break with the 8 and you also could not scratch on the 8 at any time without loss of game. Even with a winner breaks format, there were many hill-hill matches. It was nice to see a few teams that were put together at the last minute got into the money. From the outset, it looked like the strongest team was Kyoko Sone and her boyfriend, Naoki Wakimoto who ploughed through a stellar field with wins over travelmateYuko Kudaka and Crow, Andrea Saenz-Maes and Glenn Atwell, Linda Carter and Mike Zimmerman, and Margie Avlon and Stan Tourangeau for the point. Margie and Stan came through the B side to take 2nd. A second chance tournament was run on Sunday, with Sherry Griffin and Rocky taking away most of the cash. A big thank you to Robin and Wendy, Matt, and Joannie at the Brick House for making such an enjoyable weekend for the players. 1st $920 Kyoko Sone and Naoki Wakimoto (Japan and Canada) (a 3 day/2 night vacation stay in Las Vegas for 2 from Incentives International.)

On July 21st players participated in an event for mostly one reason, “Love of the Game”. Billings was host for the 22nd annual Big Sky State Games and Billiards was fortunate to be one of the events included. Our fifth year was our largest in terms of participants. We had no money added. We had no prize money. We had no Calcutta. Players came from Butte, Great Falls, Saco, Culbertson and other communities not close to Billings. We had table runs. We had jump shots made. We had some games “given away”. We played singles and doubles. We started at 10 am and finished at 11pm. We played for the gold, the silver and the bronze. I personally handed out over 30 medals and almost everyone was as proud as anyone I ever handed a check to. They came and they competed. Some players’ won and some players lost. The competition was fierce and the sportsmanship was almost perfect. We played just because we love this game. It is not always about just winning or losing it is always about competing. We played mostly for “love of the Game”. If you are from Montana, next year you can play in the Big Sky State Games and you can play “ For Love of this Game”.
