before the match and by the time it was over I was pretty sick. The match came off really great though. Both Jack Madden and Jeff Boucher took leads away from each other and tied it up at 13-13, 17-17 and again at 1919 in a race to 21.

Jack won the next game to get on the hill first and finished out the last rack making him the WINNER of the Battle of Montana.

Ph ysical F itness Can P ay Of f Phy Fitness Pa Off

By Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor At the beginning of 2007 I started on a physical fitness program. It was nothing designed by a health club or physician; it was just a self-made goal, and a commitment to do whatever it took to reach that goal. My goal was to lose 30 pounds by the end of the year, and then work to keep the weight off.

Today, over a year and a half later, I am happy Roger Long to report that I not only achieved my original weight-loss goal, but I have since exceeded it, as well as maintained an exercise and dietary program that has me feeling better than I have felt in my entire life.

So what was it that prodded me to set this type of goal at my age (56, now 57)? Well, there were two motivators – one was personal, the other professional. On the personal level, I do not have health insurance so it is very important for me to take it upon myself to stay as healthy as I possibly can. On the professional level, I have long felt that playing good pool, especially under extreme pressure, is very stressful and requires extreme focus, both of which can physically wear a player down. This is especially true if they have to play under these conditions for long periods of time. It has been no wonder to me why professional players will often comment on how exhausted they are right after they’ve won a big tournament.

With this second thought in mind, I have been hoping for the past few months to get the opportunity to test my pool game under a lengthy and stressful situation since my body seemed finally ready for it. I wasn’t sure if that was ever going to happen, however, as my work load and finances have been keeping me out of the larger tournaments for quite some time.

And since I don’t gamble, I didn’t have that as an option, either.

Then something wonderful happened. One of Arizona’s more notable young players called me out via the forums on a popular billiards website.

He never did tell me exactly why he issued his challenge, but it took only a

little rudimentary logic from my grape-sized brain to deduce that someone was finally fed up with me writing stuff as though I actually know what I am talking about, and now they wanted to find out whether or not it is true.

Well, fine then. I needed to find out the same thing for myself.

Thus, a match was set up. The disciplines were to be Straight Pool to 150 points, a 10-Ball race to 20 games, and a One Pocket race to 5 games, all on a 9-foot table. The location was to be BullShooters in Phoenix •Arizona’s largest and busiest pool room. The day and time was to be a Saturday afternoon starting at 3:00PM and going until finished. To top it off, the event was to be live streamed on the Internet.

So now let’s evaluate the situation. Here we had an old guy who hadn’t played on a 9-foot table in six years, had not played any serious competition in months, and had not been practicing at all, going up against a young guy who is one of the state’s rising stars, and one who had recently beaten Arizona’s very best player in a professional tournament; and they were to do this by way of a marathon match in front of a world-wide live audience.

No pressure there! Right.

So how did the match turn out? Well, my opponent won the 3-hour plus Straight Pool match by a score of 150-72. But then in the 10-Ball match, I came from 6 games behind to win that contest by a score of 20-18. In the tie-breaker, my opponent showed his superior One-Pocket skills by putting me away with a score of 3-0 (it had been shortened from a 5game race due to the time). I t was over nine hours of continuous, intense pool. And one in which my opponent came out with the better overall score.

But I felt like it was I who really won that night. Why? Because late in the 10-Ball match – a grueling 4-hour test of wit and grit that, if you remember, came on the heels of a 3-hour Straight Pool match – one of the live-stream commentators made the statement that I looked like I had more stamina than my opponent. Wow! Now that’s what I consider reaching a goal!

I think I just might be ready to enter some tournaments now.

Arizona BCA State Championship

The Arizona BCA State Championship on August 7th - 10th, 2008 The lure of the 2008 BCA State Championship had 27 teams and 125 BCA Pool League members rally to the Mazatzal Casino nestled in the cool pines of Payson, AZ. With six titles at stake, and $14,550, the Open Men’s and Ladies combatants were the first to battle the tight, Pro cut 4-1/2" pockets on the sixteen, 7 foot Diamond Smart Tables.

Draped in Simonis 860 Tournament Blue cloth, and dotted with Red Circle cue balls and Super Aramith Pro balls, the competitors enjoyed the best equipment known to amateur tournament play today.

The new BCAPL tournament lights, complete with built in scoring beads 1st Ladies Open: Stevie Caylor apprized the competitors of their progress.

With the newly compiled BCA Pool League (BCAPL) Rule book as reference, the players were ready to attack the racks The Men’s Open drew 60 players with Jerry Stuckart, e v e n t u a l l y, facing off a g a i n s t Robert Barry for the hotseat.

Stuckart then 1st Place Ladies Team: Alexander'sWomens “A” Team sent Barry to the one loss side where Bob Soto waited. Soto had lost his second match but bounced back with eight in a row including big wins over Tony Flores, Joe Perez and Brandon Butler. Barry sent Soto to the stands in third place.

Now, against Stuckart in the finals, Barry took an early lead and it looked like a second set was imminent. Stuckart, relentless, fought back to tie the score at hill-hill then claim the last rack and the Arizona State BCA Men’s title at 5-4.

The Ladies Open event had 30 players contending tor the title. The winner’s side came down to Stevie Caylor from Prescott and Noel Rima from Phoenix. Caylor, a relative unknown to the Phoenix players, came with a

full cheering section and a game to back it up. Caylor ousted Rima and took her place in the hot-seat. Rima, against loser bracket finalist Lourdes Lomeli. A combination of strong play from Lomeli and Rima running out of gas led to a Lomeli win. Lomeli had lost early in the event to Caylor, and was hoping to avenge in the finals. The match was close, but the scrappy Caylor came out on top again to earn the title of Arizona State BCA Ladies Champion.

The Men’s Masters Division saw reigning champion Dennis Orender make his way through the field to earn the hot-seat with a win over Terry Tucker. Tucker led early, but Orender quickly overcame the deficit and cruised to victory. After Tucker 1st Ladies Master: Susan Williams eliminated teammate Pete Lhotka on the one loss side, he met Orender in the finals. This time, Orender took the early lead and Tucker made a valiant effort to mount a comeback, but to no avail. Dennis Orender affirmed his second straight Arizona BCA State Masters title.

The Ladies Masters Division was a round-robin event with Susan Williams and Bernie Store emerging as the two top players. Store scored a dominating 5-1 win over Williams in their round robin match, but it was Williams’ 7-2 win over Store in the finals that earned the title. The Arizona State Ladies Masters Title will fit nicely next to Williams’ BCA National Scotch

With all of the singles events completed, the team events got underway.

The Ladies Teams event came down to a showdown between The “A” Team from Alexander’s in Phoenix and Kitty’s Bad Cats from Kitty’s in Phoenix. The Bad Cats are the reigning BCA Open Ladies Champions, but the “A” Team was chock full of top masters talent. Both teams made it to the hot-seat with the “A” Team coming back from an early disadvantage to win. The Bad Cats sent the Snap team apackin’ in third place and earned another shot at the “A” Team for the title. The Bad Cats gave it all they had but it just wasn’t enough and the “A” Team took the State Championship.

Big Jeff Handles the Field

NORTHGLENN, CO - August 16, 2008 Cue Club regular Jeff Crawford made a nice undefeated run through the bracket of 23 players to claim the top prize at the Big Box Summer Series 8-Ball event. "Big Jeff" as we like to call him played well to dispatch Mike Hellmer, Johnny Vasquez, Bill Skinner and John Sanifer to the one loss side.

Over on the one loss side the man on the move was BBSS 8-Ball Final Four; 2nd Nick Smith, 3rd Sgt John, Kiko. He won 5 4th Kiko and Champion Big Jeff matches in a row before running into Colorado Springs representative Nick Smith. Nick was in the middle of his own little run also winning 5 in a row, including a revenge match over John Sanifer, to take a crack at Big Jeff in the finals. The finals match would end in one set, however, and Nick would have to settle for second place.

The monsoon-like conditions in the Denver area this day probably didn't help the turnout for this event but the Cue Club and the players managed to generate a respectable $1,380 pot nevertheless. Thanks to all the players that sailed out here!

Helmer Hammers Fall Kickoff NORTHGLENN, CO - August 23, 2008 The Colorado Cue Club and Players Choice Leagues were happy to welcome 36 players for the 2nd "PCL Fall Kickoff" event: the $500 Added Fall Kickoff 9-Ball Open. Mike "Hammer" Hellmer, owner of Match Up's in Fort Collins, made his presence known by rolling through the winner's

bracket to take on Chris McDaniel. The hot seat match seemed to be all Hellmer at 6-3 in the race to 7, but McDaniel made it interesting by forcing a hill-hill game. Hammer would close the deal, however, and wait for an opponent in the finals. The battle for third was waged by a couple Big Box Summer Series champions in Bill Skinner (One Pocket) and Jeff Crawford (8-Ball). This match was all Skinner and he earned a rematch with McDaniel who had defeated him earlier getting a majority of the good fortune. The rolls seemed to be on Chris' side once again as he cruised to a 7-3 win and a birth in the finals. But they wouldn't last against the "Bulldog" Mike "the Hurricane/Hammer" Hellmer who snapped three 9-Ball breaks (all in different pockets) to win hill-hill again! Congrats to the Hammer.

The Fall Kickoff main event, $1000 Added Barbox 8-Ball, is September 13 at the Cue Club. There will also be a second chance $200 added 8-Ball.

Archer and Strickland Exhibition at Malarkey’s

Adams Wins PCL Fall Kickoff "B's and Down Special" @ the Colorado Cue Club NORTHGLENN, CO - August 16, 2008

21 pool players came out of the rain to battle it out on the bar boxes for a $300 added 8-Ball event.

This event was the first of the "Players Choice Leagues Fall Kickoff Series".

James Forton, Jesse Sandoval, Charlie Williamson, Don Adams Bob Winter of Players Choice Leagues ran the event and came ready to take league sign ups. Only "B" level players and down were allowed play.

Don Adams dominated this event moving through the winner's side defeating the likes of James Fortin, Sonny DeGuzman, Les Bagley & Jesse Sandoval to take the hot seat. Charlie Williamson lost his second match to Sean Caldwell and worked his way through the left side with victories over Ernie, Deb, Levi, James and finally Jesse to get a shot at Don for the Championship. Don did not let up and made it a short match for the title.

Bill Mildenber ger Mildenberg

Bill Mildenberger died yesterday in Portland from complications of the heart.

He had been in intensive care for about a week. He was a long time owner of the Nite Hawk in Portland and he was a leader in making the northwest a great place for pool. Bill was the first President of Western BCA and without his early leadership the Western BCA would not be where it is today. He was instrumental in getting Chinook Winds as a site for our Championships and he always gave more money and time to the sport of pool than anyone realized. Bill had been the President of the PACS since the split between ACS and BCAPL in 2004. The pool community has lost a champion of the sport. --- Bill Henderson, President Western BCA What I always admired about Bill was you always knew whether he liked you or didn’t like you. He didn’t pull any punches in dealing with people, and most knew where they stood with him. Diplomacy was not Bill’s strong suit, as he was honest in speaking his mind, regardless of the forum he was addressing. He displayed a hard exterior, but those closest to him knew he could have a soft heart. Wily, cantankerous, generous and tough rolled up into a package that endeared him to those who had the time to really know him. He displayed strong leadership skills, but he possessed the wisdom to hear opinions from those he respected before rendering a decision. Bill was always at the forefront of supporting northwest pool with his great events at the Nitehawk and the founding of the Western BCA; and he carried on his leadership role with the Pacific ACS and as a director on the national ACS Board. Perhaps Bill had a foreboding of his demise, as over the last year he handed over his leadership baton to those officers and directors who could carry on his tradition of building his associations stronger for the future. His legacy will continue.

From the national American CueSports Alliance (ACS), its player members and directors, we are truly saddened to lose a great sportsman and a great friend. He will be greatly missed, and we will rededicate ourselves to carrying on his love for the sport. – John Lewis, Executive Director - ACS We at The Break were shocked and saddened to hear of Bill’s passing.

While on deliveries, I always looked forward to stopping at the NiteHawk and talking to Bill. He always found the time to sit and talk. He was always interested in what pool news I had heard in my travels.

I had the priviledge to work with Bill when he was president of the Western BCA and of the Pacific ACS and admired his dedication to the sport. He worked tirelessly to bring pool to the players of the Northwest. He will be missed by all who knew him and the sport of pool has lost a great advocate.

Let The Ball Roll By: Bob Jewett One of the most common mistakes I see beginning and intermediate players make when they are playing position is to complicate the shot. Often they will try to use lots of power and/or spin when a Bob Jewett simple rolling cue ball would suffice.

The natural state of the cue ball is to be rolling smoothly on the cloth. This is nicely demonstrated by using a striped ball as the cue ball and shooting it the length of the table with draw. If you shoot at gentle speed, within a few diamonds of travel you will see the backspin disappear and turn first into sliding and then into smooth rolling.

One big advantage of the rolling cue ball is that it is easy to predict where the cue ball will go. As long as you pocket the ball and get the speed right, the cue ball’s ending spot is very repeatable.

In comparison, with draw shots the final cue ball location depends on both how much draw and speed you started with, how far away the object ball is, and how sticky the cloth is. Lots of things have to be right or at least taken into account for a draw shot to turn out well.

The same is often true of side spin shots with the added complications of squirt, swerve and throw. Sometimes such shots are necessary for the position you need to play, but they should not be your first choice.

Here is a drill to help you perfect your rolling shots. The goal on each shot is to pocket an object ball with a rolling cue ball and just barely pocket a second ball with the cue ball. The object balls go on the X’s in the diagram and the nine ball goes in the jaws of the pocket. The cue ball is where ever you want on each shot, so you will have to select the angle that makes the shot possible and/or easy. To make sure the cue ball is rolling when it hits the object ball, start back a couple of diamonds and shoot at least a tip above center on the cue ball.

Only put one ball up at a time or the extra balls will interfere with the shot.

The object ball always goes into pocket A. For some of the positions shown, it may be impossible to both pocket the object ball and just roll to the nine.

It’s that time of the year again! As the leaves turn, the kids go back to school and the fall pool league season begins. Do you have any plans for a better league season this year? Can you improve from last year? Now would be a good time to set some tangible, measurable goals. Maybe we want to move up by one handicap. Maybe we want a higher win percentage. The great thing with league is that someone else is keeping stats for you.

Your kids come home with progress reports that show their development and indicate their areas for improvement. Granted, the league stats won’t identify the shots you miss most often or how many times you play a safety, but most will show ERO’s Samm Diep (Earned Run-Outs) and win-loss percentages. Now remember, our goals must be performance based, not outcome based. If we put in the time, the results will follow. If you play five people in one night that all run the table on you, that was not a result of your performance.

Let’s start with something simple!

Choose a new drill each week to focus on. This should be something that allows you to target a weakness in your game. Perhaps you dislike rail cut shots or have a phobia of draw shots. If you can’t identify your weakness, just ask one of your teammates. Obviously, if one week is not enough time, keep working on it. Don’t move on to another one until you’ve got it. If you’re having trouble with it, ask for help. That’s the only way to improve.

Here’s one that I enjoy. It requires minimal set up and is a great warm-up before leagues or tournaments: In a perfect rack, the center ball doesn’t move. It’s very common to find the 8 or 9 ball still in the rack area after the break.

In this exercise, set up the 8 ball or 9 ball one ball behind the spot (basically, the same place it gets racked). Shoot the shot with ball in hand in the kitchen. If you find that’s too difficult, move the cue ball closer. Make sure you’re using a very level cue and very little side-spin. Use a deliberate, smooth stroke and try to get the cue ball back to the kitchen area, or close.

Re-spot the ball (or another one) and shoot it again from where the cue ball stopped.

You’d be surprised how many times the money ball stays put after the break. The next time you face this game-winning shot you’ll already have it in your arsenal.

Pick up a book, watch a video, surf the internet, or simply read through the rest of this publication. There are so many great resources out there to help you get started. Many of them won’t even cost you a dime!

There were 60 players with a total purse of $3,950 which consisted of the entry fee, table fee and a $1,000 added by Randy, the owner of Jack’s Billiards.

John Doherty (JD), a well known player from the area made it to the final match by defeating Marvin Holmes (9-6), Aric Twohy (9-3), Jr. T (9-5), Ben Hassler (9-4), Raul (9-5); the loss to Chuckie Holyoke (6-9). He then defeated Raul again (7-6) to face Chuckie Holyoke who was in the hot seat!

Chuckie Holyoke, the youngest player in the tournament and from the area, made it to the finals by defeating Mike Jensen (9-8), Jr. T (9-6), Tim Paget (9-8) Jeff Jimenez (9-3) and then Randy Camantigue (9-8) and JD (9-6.

John started the final match coming out strong and going up (4-1) with it looking as though he wasn’t going let up! Then in a blink of an eye, Chuckie tied the match up at (4) all! It was not going to be an easy match for either of them. The final match was one race to (11) and it took all (21) games before a champion would be crown. JD was on the hill at (10) games with Chuckie at (8) when he again tied the match at ( 10-10). Chuckie broke the final game, but was unable to get out! JD came in and finished the rack to win the tournament (11-10). This final was well worth the time to stick around and watch.

NWPA’s 5th tour stop. It was also a WPBA Qualifier for a paid entry to their upcoming stop in Lincoln City, OR. As this is a difficult event to get an invite and the closeness in proximity to us, it was circled on the calendar by all the top local players. But it also drew attention across North America.

Players came from California, Minnesota, British Columbia and Florida.

Once again, The Parlor shone through with its amazing décor, service, and playing conditions. And with the advent of all day happy hour prices for food and drinks on Sunday, it has gotten even better. The players from out of town all commented on this being the nicest pool room in which they had ever played.

It was one of these players, however, that stood out from the others. Yu Ram Cha, who is staying in Florida but is from Korea, has been working (NWPA continued on page 26)

Atw ell Qualif ies W or ld 10-Ball Atwell Qualifies Wor orld Evelyn Dysart and the Midwest 9-Ball Tour rolled into Magoo’s Billiards in Tulsa, Oklahoma for a weekend of pool. The prize was an entry into the WPA World 10-Ball Championship in Manila, Philippines in this $2,000 added tournament.

Beside the 1st place qualifier, 2nd and 3rd Glenn Atwell and Evelyn Dysart, Tournament Director places would win entry into the 2008 Reno Open.

There was a strong field of 20 pool players that showed up to battle it out.

Glenn Atwell waited in the hot seat after defeating Mark Garza and sending him to the one loss side.

On the one loss side Dustin Gunia was facing Chip Compton in the quarterfinals. The match was hard fought but Dustin came out on top with a score of 9-6 and Chip took home 4th place. Next up for Dustin was Mark Garza, fresh off his loss for the hot seat.

Unfortunately for Dustin, Mark had his sights set on a rematch with Glenn and went on to defeat Dustin 9-5 and send him home in 3rd place.

The rematch was set, Mark would have to defeat Glenn twice to be able

to claim first place and his trip to Manila for the World 10 Ball Championships. The match went back and forth with both players tied at 3. Atwell was perched for the win as the score stood at 7-6 and Glenn only needed to more racks for the win and that is exactly what he did. Glenn won rack 14 and for a grand finale broke and ran the last rack. End of MarkGarza and Evelyn Dysart, Tournament Director story.

Dave Piona Memorial

CONCORD, CA In an unprecedented show of support to the memory of Dave Piona; friends, relatives and pool supporters attended the event organized by the Diablo Valley Pool League founders Tina and Cony Mendoza; with the support of Vinnie’s Bar owner, Parker, who not only added money to the pot, but also barbecued a delicious lunch for only $5 a plate.

Randy Piona, nephew of the late Dave Piona added $500 to the event making it a very juicy pot for those that traveled from everywhere to take part in the event. Randy also committed to add $500 more to this same tournament next year.

Christina Piona also announced that Tony Annigoni of the USPPA, added a free entry to the Sands Reno 9ball Open tournament coming up in December 2008 to the winner of this event.

I was reminded how Cony and Tina Mendoza stepped up almost immediately after I lost Dave last year and offered to host a memorial tournament in his honor. They worked hard and without any financial gain for themselves; Parker, owner of Vinnie’s Bar and Grill provided the facility and tables, offered up a BBQ lunch for the players; and the players themselves came and helped us with their support, encouragement and more importantly true caring. Everyone put their literal and figurative arms around us and showered us with love.

This year’s tournament had a different, yet familiar feel. This year, I was excited to see the players and hoped that there would be a good turnout.

This year, I assisted Cony and Tina in getting the word out about the tournament. This year, I was still encouraged and supported by the players and spectators. But it this year was also my turn to reach out and let the players know just how important they were to Dave and his family. So many comrades of the green felt; so many road stories; so many years and so much history – it was such a special feeling.

A mere thank you doesn’t seem to be enough to express the gratitude that we feel for everyone who has stepped up to help us in so many, many ways. I couldn’t have made it this past year

All our leagues are handicapped providing equal opportunities to all participants. All teams get paid, and we also pay top 10 players. Most improved players are recognized and encouraged to continue to improve.

PORTLAND, OR Twenty-three players was a record for the 1st Sunday of the month tournament at Sam’s Billiards. Who would have expected it to happen in August on a beautiful day? Perhaps the Johnny Archer - Earl Strickland exhibition 11 days earlier inspired a few more people than usual to join the straight pool tournament.

Bob Zack took the top honors as he generally does when he plays. He had to beat some very good players to get there, including Michael Jensen, John Fleming and Mike Deitchman.

Other players making the finals, but not ending up in the money included Tracy Fannin, Michael Justice, Darin Walding and John Lewis. There were many fine players who were eliminated in the first round.

The player to come from the furthest distance was Walter Nead, a very good player who came from Montana to visit Jason at Sam’s.

BCA Cuts Events BROOMFIELD, Colo. - Forecasting an $800,000 operating loss this year on its balance sheet after a disappointing Expo in June, the Billiard Congress of America is planning to tighten its belt several notches in its next fiscal year and cut support for some high-profile events and organizations.

Among the casualties will be the BCA’s annual professional 9-ball tournament, produced this year as the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships. The BCA also has elected not to stage an induction ceremony for new members of the BCA Hall of Fame elected in 2009.

Those high-profile annual events were just two of the programs slashed from the 2008-2009 budget when the BCA Board of Directors met in Lake Forest, Ill., in early August. With the billiard industry still mired in a horrendous economic slump and the BCA coming off its smallest trade show in 15 years, the board of directors voted to eliminate events and affiliated association support for at least one year.

“The board voted to suspend funding to all sources and organizations until we can better analyze the extent of this economic downturn,” said BCA President Sean Cummings of Brunswick Billiards in an embargoed interview last week. “We can’t continue deficit spending, and we determined that the best way to handle budget cuts was with a uniform approach.”

Cummings left open the possibility that an outside organization could take the reins of the 9-ball event or Hall of Fame ceremony. “The question is at what level of quality they would be staged,” he said. “If somebody wants to do it right, we would certainly entertain it.”

The BCA, which derives virtually all of its revenue from its annual International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo and through membership dues, is projecting an $800,000 net operating loss for its 2007-08 fiscal year, which ends on Sept. 30. The association’s annual pro 9-ball tournament, which the BCA produces for telecast on ESPN, loses more than $100,000 per year, while the annual Hall of Fame ceremonies typically run at a $50,000 deficit.

While the final numbers from the 2008 Expo had not been tallied as of last week, Cummings said that the Charlotte, N.C.-based show would make at least a $60,000 profit or slightly more. For perspective, the 2006 BCA Expo in Houston generated a $1.1 million profit for the association.

The disappointing result and changed expectations prompted the BCA board to budget very conservatively for 2008-2009.

“We had to make tough choices,” Cummings said. “We cut discretionary spending, spending on the home office, contracted services ...”

The BCA contracts its member services, accounting, technology, association management and some public relations/marketing with Meeting Expectations in Atlanta. The association manages the expo, marketing and some graphic design through its office in Broomfield, Colo. Cuts in those areas are likely to be confined to employee time allocation.

In addition to the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships and the Hall of Fame inductions, the BCA will suspend its financial support of pool-related organizations such as the National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association and Association of College Unions-International (ACU-I). According to Cummings, the BCA will continue as the North American member confederation to the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), but will not supply funds for American players to travel to WPA events.

According to Johnson, the budget cuts will save the BCA approximately $300,000 in the coming budget year. Johnson insisted that education and research will continue to be funded.

NCS Announcement

National Championship Series Announced by CueSports International, LLC CueSports International, LLC (CSI), the parent company of the BCA Pool League (www.playbca.com), the United States Bar Table Championships (USBTC) and the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament, would like to announce the National Championship Series (NCS). The NCS will be a series of five national events in the following cue sport disciplines: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball, 14.1Continuous and One Pocket.

The first NCS event will be the 8-Ball Division. For players to participate in the 8-Ball Division they must be either a U.S. resident or possess a U.S. passport. The winner will receive all paid expenses to the prestigious World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) 2009 World 8-Ball Championship. Last year’s world event was held in Fujairah, UAE. The 2009 event is anticipated to be held in mid-April.

The following information applies to all five NCS events. Qualifier tournaments will be held at billiard rooms throughout the United States. All NCS events will be open to men and women - both amateurs and professionals. Players are not required to be a member of any national league or association. In the initial years of the NCS, everyone must qualify - there will not be any invited players.

Mark Griffin, CEO of CSI expressed the need for a more formalized national championship system, “The U.S. is one of the few countries that does not conduct national championships. CSI saw the possibility of creating opportunities for pool players while offering national exposure for the billiards industry. This structure will determine for the first time a true national champion in all five disciplines.”

SACRAMENTO, CA Tony Chohan ended his west coast visit by taking 1st place in the One Pocket and 9 Ball events.

Tony took a break from the Detroit and areas east and south of the modern day pool world to visit the west coast and his friends. Tony also took 1st place at almost all the regional tournaments he played.

Mr. Chohan won the monthly One Pocket event going undefeated and not losing a game to a very strong field of Northern California’s best players. T-Rex took the 1st place prize of $340. 32 players at $20 each and $500 added by Hard Times for a total of $1140.00 in the One Pocket prize fund.

Once again Tony showed he’d gained some more skills back east by going thru the winners side undefeated and only losing 3 games total. Jeff Heath’s only loss on the winners side was to Tony for the Hot Seat. Jeff went to the left side to meet Billy Palmer in the finals of the one loss side.

Tony and Jeff met in the finals of the true double elimination. Tony had Jeff 5-1 and got out of line just enough in the 7th game to let Jeff back into the match. Mr. Heath caught fire and ran 4 racks to tie it Hill-Hill and then won the next game after a long safety battle. The final set Jeff won the first game and then it was all Tony. Mr. Chohan collected the 1st place prize of $660.

Eddy Corrido takes down the Classic Island Casino in Kennewick Washingtons Handicap tournament August 9th and 10th.

It was a small field of 25 players for the tournament but everything ran smooth for Tournament Director Dave Schneider. Players were rated from 4 to 7 and there was races to 9 on both sides.Sammy Maul from Moses Lake, Jim Adams Tri Cities, Cooco Lower Valley, Roy Garza Walla Walla , Dave Schneider Tri Cities and Eddy Corrido Seattle/Yakima all joined the field and were our top 6 finishers in the tournament.

Sammy was put in the losers bracket after a tough loss to Jim Adams, Jim had Sammy down 8-0 and Sammy got it back to 8-7 before Jim got out again to finish the match what a comeback. Roy beat Dave Schneider 9-7 to stay undefeated, and Eddy beat Jim Adams 9-4 with Jim having a 3

On the losers side Sammy stayed hot by beating Dave Schneider 9-8 and Cooco had Jim Adams down 6-3 before Jim Adams quit. The hot seat was Eddy beating Roy Garza 9-6 sending him to the losers side. Sammy kept it going by beating Cooco 9-8 by Cooco missing the 9-ball on the hill. Then Sammy had a shot at Roy Garza Sammy was on fire and beat Roy 9-1 setting up the match with Eddy which Sammy has to beat him twice. Eddy decides to cool Sammy off and beat him 9-5.

on July 19. We saw many new faces, as well as some familiar ones. We were also pleased to have two female contestants. There were two divisions based upon age; 15 and under and 15 to 20(Youth). We also ran a doubles tournament at the end of our bracket tournament. Marco Morris took gold in the 15 and under with Corbin Albright taking silver, and Canyon Crooker and Spencer Scala tying for the bronze. Tyler Yost of Livingston took gold in the Youth division with Marco Morris taking silver and Corbin Albright taking bronze. The doubles tournament was won by Tyler Yost and Jeff Berg. Marco Morris and Corbin Albright took silver. Conner Albright and Ryan Bird took bronze.

The turn out was exceptional and the players participated with maturity beyond their years.

“We have a singular objective,” said Cummings. “And that is to make the trade show a success.”

Even taking into account the proposed budget cuts, the BCA is tentatively forecasting a $200,000 loss for the 2008-2009 budget year.

Still, Cummings stressed that the association is financially sound, despite the board’s recent decisions.

“These decisions are simply necessary to preserve the ability to promote our industry over the long term,” he said. “This organization is doing exactly what our members are doing in their businesses, evaluating expenses and making tough choices to get through this slump.”

Phoenix TAP To Send Six Teams To The TAP Nationals

WOW! Four tournaments - four weekends - six teams qualified to go to the TAP Nationals in Orlando, Florida. August was a busy month for Phoenix TAP - first qualifying the final session’s teams to go to Masters, then corralling all of the teams who qualified in the previous three sessions during 2007 to participate in the 2008 Phoenix Masters.

The Phoenix Masters determined the “best-ofthe-best” TAP teams qualified to go to the TAP Nationals. Out of a field of 150 teams for each of the Kolby’s - plays out of Kolby’s on University & Mill - Steve Johnson (Cpt), three sessions out of the Amber Crowder, Chuck Sundgaard, Jonathon Johnson, Justin Roan, year, six teams emerged Lester Penning, Steve Zamanakos and Tony Major. as the Phoenix TAP elite.

This left the Open Teams event undecided. All players in attendance agreed that the early favorite was Cop and Robbers. The team was crammed with talent including reigning Masters Champion Dennis Orender and National Barbox 8-Ball Champion Mitch Ellerman. All that talent was not enough as the Land Sharks from Crazy Earls, in the third round, put them in the loser’s bracket.

The Sharks pummelled two more strong teams, X Factor from Phoenix and then the White Rhinos from Prescott, to sit atop in the hot-seat.

Who else to confront them in the finals

— none other than Cop and Robbers? The first set was a close one, but a victorious Cop and Robbers and forced a second set.

The Land Sharks quickly found that allowing their opponents to see the finish line was bad strategy. Cop and Robbers crushed the team from Crazy Earls in the final set to become Arizona State BCA Champions.

2008 AZ BCA State Championship was another successful event with five of the six events being won by teams from Alexander’s in Phoenix.

A true testament to the level of talent 1st Men's Open: JerryStuckart there was also a statement to what players lost when Alexander’s, unfortunately, closed their doors earlier this year.

She held the point after losing no more than three games in any match, and while Kim Hole tied her at 4-4 at one point, Yu Ram held on to win 9-5. June Maiers from Minnesota took third with a strong run through the B side, as did Shari Ross taking fourth.

It appears that the season point race for the tour winner will be close as we come to our last two tour stops, with the next one being at Jack’s Billiards in Lynnwood (the “Uncle” part has been dropped) on September 20th-21st.

are impossible. For example, if a ball is at point Y, you can’t make it in A and simply roll the cue ball into the nine without coming off the side cushion.

The point is to learn both what is possible and what is impossible.

An extension of the drill that is more general is to see for each object ball location where can you leave the cue ball exactly by the cushion with a rolling cue ball and no bounces off cushions. For example, you could chose point Y for the object ball and see which diamonds — A, B, C, D, E, F — you can leave the cue ball near while pocketing the object ball in pocket A. I think I can reach all of them except maybe F. Remember, it’s no fair to use draw, since a combination of angle and draw (or follow) should allow you to get to any spot on the table. This is a rolling cue ball drill.

My Vegas 2008 APA Wheelchair Challenge Story

As some of you know, I recently had the pleasure of traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada to play in the 2008 APA 8 ball Wheelchair Challenge. I have been shooting league pool now with the APA since 2005, but had never played in this tourney. In 2007, I shot in three NWPA, National Wheelchair Poolplaying Association, events in which I finished the year 13th in points. They play about 8-10 tournaments a year on average.

For this particular APA event, I really did not know what to expect. I went into the event as an SL4 (read skill level 4), but having recently gone up to an SL5, I explained it to the tournament officials beforehand. They simply said that I would be continue to play as an SL4 and would be adjusted accordingly.

First round, I played a guy named Joel Goodman from Oregon. Nice guy, SL4, and he had a decent game. For some Shorty reason, I was very timid and nervous...not my usual self for sure. I lost hill/hill.

Luckily the format was modified single elimination...meaning you could lose one of your first two matches and still be in it, but not both.

My second round, I got a bye.

My third round saw me playing a guy named Rob Thompson from Decatur, Illinois, also an SL4, who turns out finished third last year in this event. I didn't know this until after our match. I won hill/hill, but I also gave him a game by scratching on the 8 ball in the side pocket. This match I played MUCH better than my first...actually having a couple of nice outs. I basically beat this guy by running a few balls and getting in his head, sort of my usual game.

My fourth round was a gift...plain and simple. I played Rene Martinez from Garland, Texas, an SL4 and he had me crushed 2-1 going into the fourth game. He breaks, scratches, and makes the 8 ball. Now we have hill/hill again. Again I am shooting very timid...not very fluid or adventurous for some reason. He makes an incredible bank shot and breaks out a ball of his I thought I had tied up. He then makes the ball, but hooks himself badly on the 8, only being able to see a sliver of it. He goes for the hit, misses the 8 ball entirely, and scratches in the side...giving me the match. I felt really bad for this guy, but a win is a win.

That concluded day 1, and I for one felt blessed to even still be alive after my poor shooting. It was not that I played so badly, it was just I had such a case of the jitters. I guess it had been too long since I had really played in a tournament of this caliber.

Day two would be a different story...

I started my day playing the defending champion, and it seemed everyone enjoyed pointing out to me that he was the defending champion. For some reason, I didn't mind it at all. His name was Jamie Havard, another SL4, and he was from Lucedale, Mississippi of all places. Heck I been deer hunting in his neck of the woods I am sure. He played strong, but I played STRONGER. I ended up beating him 3-0. That's when I realized that I had

My next opponent was Latai Loa, SL4, from Hilo, Hawaii. This gentleman turned out to be one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of playing this whole tournament. He shot every shot with a bridge from his electric wheelchair. He was just super nice, always a smile and very curteous. I hate to say this, but I crushed him 3-0 in about 7 or 8 innings. I played probably my best match of the tournament against him.

This brought me to the semi-finals upstairs at the Riviera. I had to send my buddy back to our hotel room for a collared shirt since I didn't even bring one. Luckily Predator cues gave me one the day before for buying a Poison jump/break cue.

The semi's would find me playing Michael Little, an SL3, from Springfield, Virginia.

Unfortunately, because of my strong playing, they moved me up to an SL5 right before the match...meaning I had to win 4 games to his 2. I won the first game, but he won the second game. With my back to the wall so to speak, I won the next two...including a rather difficult backwards cut on the 8 ball to push it to hill/hill. The final game, well, I missed 1 shot. It was an easy 11 ball near the rail, but my mind said to run the cue ball two rails to get shape on the 8. Looking back, I should of hit it with bottom left and drew the cue ball to center table. I just felt confident going forward instead of drawing the cue ball. I missed and he ran two balls and the 8 for the win.

I settled for third place, a nice plaque, and $500.
