IMPACT /im-pakt/ noun 1. the conscientious force of action or influence of an organization, to positively transform itself and the world at large. verb 2. to exert and inspire a strong, positive effect on someone or something

MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Our evolution in the hospitality business reflects our journey as a socially responsible organization. The wellbeing of our team members, our community and environment, is central to our mission, inspired by our owners — the Kenan family and our Board of Directors. We are grateful for their support, and for the opportunity to carry their legacy of positive change. We share this report to summarize what we strive for, whether fostering individual health and wellness, sustainability, or empowering those in need. As we continually challenge ourselves to do better and be better both personally and for the greater good, we start from within. By engaging our people and investing in their best potential, we elevate the workplace. In turn, our team makes us proud not just for delivering great service, to our guests and each other, but for serving as caring citizens who are committed to doing the right thing.

OUTREACH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Since 2007, The Breakers has been a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity’s mission to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing by sponsoring homes, donating furniture, and partnering with City Mattress to provide bedding for each residence.

COMMUNIT Y

VOLUNTEER TIME OFF In the 2018 fiscal year, team members volunteered 16,660 hours using Volunteer Time Off (VTO). Our team members want to make a difference in the world. Through VTO, they are empowered to use work time to volunteer, further inspiring them to inject their energy and enthusiasm into the local community and serving agencies they support. Full-time team members receive 16 VTO hours each year; part time team members receive 8 hours. During the new hire orientation experience, our newest team members engage in a community service project with members of the Executive Group and Community Relations team, emphasizing the spirit of service at the heart of The Breakers, and the importance of the VTO program.

BE OUR GUEST The Breakers’ Be Our Guest program celebrates selfless volunteers in our community who work quietly out of the spotlight to brighten the lives of those less fortunate. Local charitable partners nominate outstanding volunteers to be considered for this award, with the winner honored with a well-deserved, all-inclusive two-night stay at The Breakers. In 2018, Ramon and Mirella Reyna were selected in honor of their commitment and dedication to the patients of the Alzheimer’s Community Care. Originally from the Dominican Republic, the couple moved to Palm Beach County 14 years ago to be closer to their family. At 71 years young, the couple takes two buses each day before the sun rises to help the nurses at the center prepare for the day. Their compassion and dedication to providing comfort and care to the patients personifies what it means to serve.

ROUND IT UP AMERICA Established by leaders in the restaurant industry, Round It Up America strives to make change across America through a simple, yet powerful, giving program by providing restaurant patrons the opportunity to donate to charity by ‘rounding up’ their check when using a credit card.

$39,730

was collected through The Breakers partnership with Round It Up America this fiscal year, benefitting local hunger relief organizations Palm Beach County Food Bank and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry, as well as national restaurant education agencies and the American Red Cross.

WOMEN’S BUILD PROJECT In 2018, a Breakers’ sponsored home served as the designated host home for Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build Project, a national campaign focused on empowering women to fundraise and build homes for other deserving women in their community. A team of 10 women from The Breakers fundraised for this campaign, and volunteered at a build day alongside new homeowner, Brandy Jordan.

This experience has been life changing! I’m so thankful there are people in this community that truly care about others. I’m honored to be the sponsored homeowner. Brandy Jordan 2018 Women’s Build Homeowner

Team members celebrate with an ice cream social, served by members of our Executive Group.

PALM BEACH BED TAX Palm Beach County bed tax funds levied on all hotels in Palm Beach County, further strengthen our economy by creating jobs, restoring our beaches, funding professional sports facilities and the arts across the Palm Beaches. The Breakers proudly contributed $5.8 million in bed tax revenue this fiscal year.

GIVING TUESDAY – A GLOBAL DAY OF GIVING Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, this annual movement kicks off the giving season with a generous spirit. Fueled by the power of collaboration, this event allows team members the opportunity to bring change to our local community through collaborative service projects. In 2017, the Executive and Senior Management Groups participated in a hunger relief project with Feeding South Florida where they inspected and sorted donated food to ensure it was safe for consumption before distribution to the community.

SIMPLE VODKA

COMMUNIT Y

Beginning in March 2018, The Breakers partnered with Simple Vodka an organization determined to fight hunger in America, one drink at a time. Their mission is simple: develop a superior quality product, produce it sustainably, price it sensibly, and deliver positive social impact for their cause. Through their partnership with Feeding America, Simple Vodka’s donation supports the logistics with storing and delivering healthy food to local food banks, with one bottle equaling 20 donated meals. Since March, 1,992 bottles of Simple Vodka were purchased, totaling 39,840 meals.

THE BREAKERS ENVIRONMENTAL PHILOSOPHY The Breakers strives to be a leader in our community in the promotion of sustainability by reducing its environmental footprint. This guiding principle serves as a tool for team members on proper waste disposal, energy reduction, water conservation, and bottled water consumption.

EARTH DAY PLEDGE On Earth Day 2018, team members were invited to take one of three Earth Day pledges to protect our planet: commit to recycling at home, stop using plastic bags, or no longer use plastic water bottles. More than 600 signatures were received.

PAPER STRAWS In March 2018, The Breakers made the green move to say goodbye to plastic straws. Making the switch to paper straws throughout our restaurants, shops, and banquet operations will help us eliminate the use of more than 1.6 million plastic straws annually. Together, we can help lessen the damaging effects plastic has on our planet and marine life.

WATER CONSERVATION REVERSE OSMOSIS Water is one of our most precious resources. Our on-site, reverse osmosis facility pumps deep well water from 1,000 feet below and converts undrinkable water into irrigation to help reduce The Breakers’ water footprint.

82 million gallons of potable water conserved in 2018. 37

LAUNDRY PROJECT A state-of-the-art washing machine dramatically supports The Breakers’ water conservation efforts and provides an improved work environment for our team. With comfortable workplace temperatures and the elimination of manual loading and unloading hundreds of pounds of linen every day, this advanced machine enhances our water conservation efforts by saving three gallons of water per pound of laundry, equaling 12 million gallons of water saved each year.

HOPE WATER The Breakers supports clean water projects through its Hope Water purchases, an organization devoted to providing the highest quality natural spring water. Every case purchased provides safe, clean drinking water for one person for life by providing water filtration systems at no cost to families and communities around the world giving them the opportunity to live a longer, healthier, and better life.

LOCAL FOOD SUSTAINABILITY SUSTAINABLE DINING The Breakers proudly sources essential produce served in our restaurants from local farms during Florida’s growing season (November through May) and strives to purchases locally caught, and responsibly fished or farmed seafood.

LOCALECOPIA A non-profit founded in 2008 by members of The Breakers’ purchasing team, Localecopia’s mission is to bring together individuals as well as businesses, educators, and government organizations with local farms and producers to focus on lessening our carbon footprint by supporting local product consumption and utilizing waste to help achieve sustainable business practices.

LOCALECOPIA’S MEET & GREET Hosted by The Breakers, this event invites local producers, hotels, restaurants, country clubs, and school food services to connect with other like-minded sustainability experts. Localecopia continues to work towards providing farm-to-school programs by providing Florida school districts with fresh local produce.

GREEN MARKET Available every Friday during Florida’s growing season (November through May), The Breakers Green Market provides team members a convenient on-property shopping experience with access to superior quality farm fresh produce at low prices.

Now available in 13 schools, many of which are located in low-income districts, approximately 2,500 Palm Beach County students have benefited from this interactive discussion.

Seeing kids embrace the environment and wellness initiatives is my favorite part of our sustainability and volunteer initiatives! Elisabeth Short, Recreation Manager The Breakers Palm Beach

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TRIPADVISOR GREEN LEADER For the second year in a row, The Breakers achieved a Silver rating from TripAdivsor’s Green Leaders program. Developed by TripAdvisor and experts in the green and sustainability industries, this program recognizes hotels and bed & breakfasts leading the way in environmentally friendly practices, making it easier for travelers to find a greener hotel stay. Qualifying properties are marked with a badge on their TripAdvisor page.

CLEAN THE WORLD Simple hand washing substantially reduces the spread of infection and disease, which claim the lives of more than five million people each year, the majority being children less than five years old.

ENVIRONMENT

Clean the World recycles The Breakers’ partially used amenities and sanitizes the soap and shampoo that would otherwise be discarded and distributes them to domestic homeless shelters and impoverished countries worldwide.
