FROM THE

General Manager
s I walk the campus speaking to members, I find one thing in common... everyone is or has planned a summer trip for the first time in a long time. Whether you’re leaving or not, The Briar Club is ready to serve you!
The pandemic left the hospitality field in shambles. Many employees across the nation were laid off, while at the same time, unemployment benefits grew. As the pandemic ended, the hospitality industry experienced a robust growth in business with no help to be found. This becomes a huge problem within Clubs, because we pride ourselves on being a place with familiar faces. Losing these team members would have been detrimental to the Club and the staff we have built. At The Briar Club, we took a different stance from the very beginning, so we were able to keep those familiar faces employed. The monthly service charge billed to your account helped tremendously with keeping these staff members employed. We take great pride in our staff and the team we have built over the last five years, adding to the invaluable employees that have been here for years. We have hired, we have trained, and now we must maintain. Those special moments with those special employees are what make a Club, for example... seeing Nikki, Michael, or Javier behind the Lounge Bar, needing a wine recommendation from Skyler, getting a killer Blasarita from Blas at Breezes, seeing Marta and Alma taking care of business in the ladies’ locker room, talking sports with Roy, Dexter, or Aurelio in the men’s locker room, sharing a friendly wave with Bang Bang as you drive through the gate, getting a warm welcome from Endora as you enter the tennis shop, checking in with Cynthia and Oscar in fitness, or handing your kiddos over to Sharron in the Kids Club. Those are just a few examples of moments that help contribute to the culture of The Briar Club. Thank you, Briar Club team, for all your dedication and hard work. We are inching closer to the opening of our newly remodeled dining space, the Family Grille. Features include a gas fireplace, custom-built live edge community table, and much more. The new room promises to be a Club favorite. I would like to thank Kathy Masterson, Amy Munger and Elizabeth Stiver for the time and effort they put in to make sure the room exceeds member expectations. Together, we have spent many days driving around town, sitting in banquettes, looking at dining chairs, and finding the perfect feel for our membership and the room. Every single detail of the new Family Grille was hand selected and well thought out. We are truly excited to show you the results. The Club continues to perform well financially and membership is strong. The future of The Briar Club is extremely bright. Hope to see you around soon! Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O.

FROM THE
T
President
oday as I write this note, the forecast high temperature is 99 degrees. Hard to fathom that it was just several months ago that we all experienced an epic deep freeze. Unlike the freeze, however, the heat will not force us to close the Club as was required during our historic grid shutdown. Conserving energy as advised by ERCOT perhaps, but definitely not a hard stop. To the contrary, the heat makes the Club a happy, fun, and ‘cool’ place to be with our three wonderful pools. The Family Resort Pool is buzzing with happy kids and parents, the Barracudas continue to dominate in the Competition Pool, and our Adult Lap Pool provides a less hectic environment in which to swim laps.
The Briar Club 2030 Strategic Plan is taking shape as we eagerly await the survey results and report. Many thanks to those of you that took considerable time and effort while completing the survey. The participation rate among our members was encouraging and another example of a healthy and engaged membership. We will report to you the findings, results, and suggestions once made available by the consulting firm. The Bistro renovation is underway and we are making super progress with a preLabor Day delivery date as our goal. Upon conclusion of the renovation, we will be referring to this space as The Grille. The renovation is a wonderful example of collaboration between members, management, and third party objective professionals. Safety on and around our campus is always a focal point. The garage renovation is an example of how we are always improving our facilities with the safety and security of our members front and center. With that in mind, please help the management team keep your children safe in and around the Club. Children under the age of twelve should not be left unsupervised. Being mindful of our children will keep them safe and ensure an enjoyable experience for all members. Speaking of members, our beautiful campus, excellent staff, and management team continue to attract new members at a very impressive rate. Linda Benson, our Director of Membership, has been busy touring prospective members, many of whom complete their application the same day as the tour! Great work Linda, the team, and our members that continue to refer prospective members. A far cry from this time last year, thankfully! I also want to point out the success of the Club’s Employee Scholarship Fund. We partner with the Greater Houston Community Foundation to manage investments, administer the paperwork and application process, and evaluate and select our scholarship recipients. This is an extremely important endeavor and is valuable to our staff and their families. Our most recent recipients of the Briar Club Employee Scholarship Fund are listed in the back of the newsletter. You can also learn how to support this tremendous Fund and I thank you for your generosity. Enjoy the summer, stay cool, and see you at the Club! Dan Carter 2021 President, Board of Directors

it ’s a briar club summer! It’s been a wonderful summer so far, and we love seeing our campus alive with energy and buzzing with swim team, lessons, camps, and more. Here are a few things to keep in mind as summer winds its way into fall. MAY I BRING GUESTS TO THE CLUB? Absolutely! We are always happy to welcome your friends and family to our Club. However, we kindly ask that in accordance with the House Rules, all guests are accompanied by a member or are participating in a member-sponsored activity in the fitness, swim, tennis or youth areas of the Club. Guest fees shall be charged to the Member’s account for the use of the Club’s aquatics, tennis and fitness facilities. Guest fees do not apply for dining-only guest visits. All Members and guests are required to sign-in at the Security Desk. CAN MY HOUSEHOLD EMPLOYEE/NANNY ACCOMPANY MY CHILDREN? Household employees are permitted access to the Club for the sole purpose of accompanying minor children of a member. Guest fees shall be charged, as appropriate, in the event any such household employee uses Club swim, tennis, or fitness facilities. Household employees must be added to your membership account and must have a photo on file before they can enter the Club. To add a household employee to your account, please contact Linda Benson, our Director of Memership, at membership@thebriarclub.com or (713) 622-3667 ext. 2159. MAY I DROP OFF MY CHILDREN? Per our House Rules, no children or guest of members under the age of 12 years old shall access or remain at the Club if unaccompanied by a parent or other adult, unless they are attending a summer camp or Briar Fun Day and have been signed in with a camp counselor. Please be sure to accompany children at Club events, and keep an eye on them while on campus. Additionally, children 12 and under are not permitted above the ground floor of the Clubhouse unless accompanied by a parent. Careful and considerate behavior is asked of all members and guests in all areas on campus. Thank you for helping to make The Briar Club an enjoyable place for everyone!
new arrivals & in memoriam We are always excited to see our Briar Club family grow by two feet! If you would like your little one featured in the next newsletter, please send his or her name, birth date and a photo to communications@thebriarclub.com. Additionally, we always look to remember and honor the members we have lost. If you know of a member that should be included in our In Memoriam section, please send his or her name or an obituary to communications@thebriarclub.com.

congratulations, barracudas! The entire Briar Club family is proud to recognize the amazing achievements of the 2021 Barracudas Swim Team! After taking a break last year because of the pandemic, the Barracudas were BACK IN THE WATER this year and better than ever. This year, The Briar Club Barracudas battled Houston Country Club, The Forest Club, The Houstonian, Lakeside Country Club, Houston Racquet Club, and River Oaks Country Club. Our Lil’ Barracudas did an amazing job this year as well, showing great progress and excitement for swimming as they prepare to join the swim team! Many congratulations to all of our Barracuda Swim Team Coaches for their enthusiasm, preparation, and determination to our swimmers of all ages. We also recognize and thank the constant dedication of all Swim Team parents who volunteered at meets, coordinated practice schedules, and cheered on our swimmers at each meet. We already can’t wait for next year!
The Junior Lifeguard Program teaches children and teens how to detect and assist distressed swimming victims, make rescues, use lifeguarding equipment, and use the fundamentals of CPR and First Aid. This is a great introduction to lifeguarding and is full of great information kids can use both inside and outside of the pool. DATES Tuesday, July 13 - Thursday, July 15 TIME 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm PRICING $75 per child AGES 7-14
