s we enter 2025, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what an incredible year 2024 has been. This past year, we celebrated a remarkable milestone—75 years of The Briar Club’s legacy of excellence and service. To everyone who attended the 75th Anniversary Party, thank you for being part of such a special celebration. The consensus is we need to do something like this every year. I encourage everyone to continue embracing and respecting the legacy of The Briar Club. For generations, The Briar Club has been a place where members and their families create lasting memories, let’s continue creating those memories.

INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE AND SUSTAINING EXCELLENCE

I am filled with gratitude for how strong we are as a Club—both financially and strategically. Across the country, many clubs face challenges from years of underinvestment in their facilities and assets. Thankfully, The Briar Club has consistently avoided this pitfall through the foresight and dedication of our Board of Directors, who understand the importance of investing in the Club’s future. Preventative maintenance and maintaining our Club have been key to ensuring we stay at the forefront of excellence, allowing us to grow operationally for current and future members.

By continually enhancing our facilities and services, we ensure that The Briar Club remains vibrant, innovative, and positioned for long-term success. Thank you to everyone who has supported our initiatives to grow and elevate The Club’s assets. More exciting things to come soon!

REFLECTING ON OPERATIONS

Our success wouldn’t be possible without the exceptional team we have here at The Briar Club. I am immensely proud of the strong group of department directors who work tirelessly to provide an unparalleled experience for our members.

A special congratulations goes to Cathy Staerker on her recent promotion to Director of Fitness and Wellness. Cathy’s leadership will undoubtedly enhance our already thriving fitness community.

I would also like to take a moment to celebrate two remarkable milestones: Roy Singleton, who has dedicated 20 years of outstanding service to The Briar Club, and Marta Abbas, who has been an integral part of the Club for 19 years. Their hard work, commitment, and loyalty have greatly contributed to the legacy of excellence we all enjoy. Please join me in thanking them for their many years of dedication.

Additionally, I’m thrilled to share that our Food & Beverage operations achieved a record-breaking $8 million in 2024—a testament to the hard work and dedication of our F&B leadership team.

HOST YOUR NEXT EVENT AT THE CLUB

Lastly, I’d like to remind you that The Briar Club is the perfect venue for your private events. From intimate gatherings to grand celebrations, our dedicated Catering & Special Events Department is ready to help bring your vision to life with the high standards you’ve come to expect. If you’re planning a special occasion, please reach out to explore the many options we offer.

Thank you for being part of The Briar Club’s story. It’s an honor, and I look forward to an exciting year ahead filled with continued growth, innovation, and cherished moments.

Best,

APresident

s we celebrate our Club’s 75th-year milestone, I am honored to step into the role of President during this pivotal and exciting time. First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our outgoing President, Melissa Stryker, for her exceptional leadership and dedication to our Club. Under Melissa’s guidance, we have reached this landmark anniversary stronger and more vibrant than ever. I also wish to thank our retiring Board members, Lou Black and Amy Munger, for their service and invaluable contributions to our shared community.

Additionally, I am grateful to our dedicated staff members for their hard work and tireless efforts in making the 75th Anniversary Gala a success. A heartfelt thank you to Daniel Moreno, Michael Powell, Skyler Gentry, and Shawn Rushing for their outstanding contributions and commitment to excellence. Your efforts ensured this milestone celebration was genuinely unforgettable.

I am pleased to welcome our new Board members: Jordan Jewett, Will Oliver, and Becky Stehle. Their talents and enthusiasm will bring fresh perspectives to our ongoing mission to enhance the experience of all our members. This Board is an incredibly talented and insightful group, poised to address some of the most impactful decisions in our Club’s recent history. As many of you know, in 2024, the Board engaged C2 Limited Design Associates to assist us in envisioning the next chapter for our campus. C2 has worked tirelessly—meeting with the Board, department heads, their teams, and the Strategic Planning Committee. They hosted member focus groups and conducted a comprehensive member survey. Their insights have helped identify potential projects that reflect our members’ desires and needs.

Some of these possibilities include refreshing and maintaining our historic clubhouse, adding shade structures around the family pool, updating the Barracuda Cafe, refreshing and expanding the Wellness Building (including Breezes), upgrading the poolside locker rooms, and creating a state-of-the-art sports court facility with a covered tennis court and multiple covered pickleball courts. As these ideas take shape, the Board will collaborate with C2 to obtain cost estimates and carefully evaluate funding strategies with the Finance Committee. While we are committed to improving our campus, the Board remains sensitive to balancing these needs with financial responsibility. We will bring any project requiring an assessment to the membership for approval.

As we embark on this journey together, I am inspired by the energy and excitement that defines our Club. Thank you for making this community so extraordinary, and I look forward to working with each of you in the year ahead to honor our past and plan for the future. Wishing you and your families a joyful and prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,, Marian Hilpert

FROM THE KITCHEN

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to wish all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! Our culinary team is thankful each day for the opportunity to serve the families and friends of The Briar Club. As we enter the new year, we will begin increasing our transparency related to the selection and sourcing of our food products. I am available at any time to discuss your specific dietary needs and satisfy any curiosities you may have about our menu items, including the recipes, preparation and processes.

Members want to know!

All soups and sauces are prepared from scratch daily by our AM Sous Chef Azucena Pineda who has been with The Club for over 10 years. Using predominately classical techniques, you will find the base stocks such as beef, veal, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, lobster and vegetable, simmering away in our kitchens regularly.

All cold sauces, soups, and salad dressings including marinades are also made in house by our Garde Manger team led by Chef Mariela Flores. All cheeses are bought whole and processed in house. Our parmesan is always Parmesano Reggiano from Italy, in all applications.

Our shrimp, crab, and snapper are always wild caught and come in daily from the Gulf of Mexico.

Our beef is either black angus (tenderloins and burgers) or USDA prime (NY Strip, Allen Bros Ribeye). Steaks are cut in house by our butcher and all burgers are made from hand formed patties. Occasionally we will offer dinner specials or wine dinners sourcing Texas (Rosewood Farms) or Australian Wagyu cross breeds from sustainable responsible producers.

We only cook with olive oil, avocado oil, clarified butter, whole butter or natural fats and limit the addition of seed oils whenever possible. All finishing oils are arbequina extra virgin olive oil from Spain.

Chef Oscar Juarez partners with our purchasing manager Santino Gonzalez to continuously build relationships with local farmers and producers such as Houston Dairymaids, Zero Point Organics and Lonestar Mushrooms to name a few.

As some of you experienced during the 75th Gala we have an open-door policy in our kitchens and welcome you to come back for a personal tour any time.

Thank you for your continued support and feedback. Please let me know if you have any specific questions or if I can assist you in any way!

Cheers,

age

Each year, a group of team members, led by Nikki Wilson, our Lead Bartender, comes together to give back to the community. This year, we volunteered at the Houston Food Bank to support their Share Your Holidays program, which helps tens of thousands of people access food during the holiday season.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

As we embark on 2025, in the Finance/Accounting Department, we continue to find ways to improve the operation, and the employee skill set. On September 30, 2024, we moved to paperless statements, which saves the operation time and money. We developed a FY 2025 budget that provides the resources for the operation at a minimal increase to member dues, both operating and capital maintenance ($10/member/month). In terms of employee development, we continue to work on critical thinking. Critical thinking is a necessary skill for all professions and allows one to pivot when new situations occur. We have also spent significant time on developing and improving soft skills, also known as “EQ” or emotional intelligence. These two skills are important, and most of the time are the ones that need development.

Continuous improvement is what keeps professional skills fresh, assets in the clubhouse maintained, and ideas for member experiences engaging. The whole premise of continuous improvement involves movement and “taking action”, which is contrary to remaining fixed or “status quo” thinking. It is necessary to grow and evolve and/or face the risk of becoming ineffective. The growth can be minimal or on a large scale. Incremental growth from day to day, month to month, adds up to substantial growth from year to year. By incorporating best practices in how we approach each task helps to create an environment that is conducive to continuous improvement.

As The Club moves toward another renovation, we do so because of improvement of the amenities offered, and the value renovation will bring to the member experience and the “look and feel” of the campus. Any asset used and owed overtime needs repair, maintenance, and replacement. Whether the change includes new tennis/pickleball courts for the racquet community, enhanced youth space for families, updated banquet facilities with greater appeal for holding events, or a wellness/fitness refresh, all those ideas will add value and improve the value proposition of The Briar Club.

Our aim in the Finance/Accounting office is to provide appropriate options to finance what The Club needs. We embrace the spirit of continuous improvement and aim to be part of the solution. Thank you for your continued membership and forward thinking!! Best,
