FROM THE GM
FROM THE PRESIDENT
daniel.moreno@thebriarclub.com
Spring is in the air, and we were so fortunate to avoid any heavy freezes this winter resulting in our campus being nice and plush for the Spring season. Continuing the 75 year celebration of The Briar Club, below are a few random Club facts!
• Did you know the original Club newsletter was named "Whispers"?
• We still have the original recipe for Grandma Fannie Santamaria’s famous meatballs served when The Club was the Coral Club. Locked up of course!
• In the 1950s, the initiation fee for The Club was $300.00!
• In the 60’s The Club had the opportunity to buy the land where the Whataburger currently is at $2.50 a square foot. Too expensive for The Club at that time!
Thank you to everyone for the feedback regarding the new competition pool. All feedback has been positive, and we are very excited we met our deadline and budget. I understand TBC member Mike Schick was our very first swimmer in the pool at around 5:45 AM.
There is still time to sign up for the 3rd Annual Briar Club Golf Tournament! This year we were able to find many sponsors that have helped take this tournament to the next level. A special thank you to Forney Construction, Haxel Landscaping, and Goodman Financial Corporation, for their large contributions to the tournament.
We have recently had problems with kids on the tennis courts destroying cups and throwing ice everywhere. To the right is a picture taken after a very busy Friday night at The Club with those torn up cups and water everywhere. The last thing we want to do is shut down all traffic on the tennis courts in the evening or remove the water and ice, so I am asking all members to please keep an eye on your kiddos when dining at The Club. Our staff spends a numerous amount of unnecessary time cleaning this up regularly.
Club Safe is a national company that creates different safety plans for Clubs in the event of an emergency. Our team recently finished this training here at TBC. We run drills and medical emergency situations to ensure we react correctly and timely in the event of an emergency. Yearly CPR/First Aid Training and the Club Safe program are extremely important and over the last few years have proven to be lifesaving here at TBC.
Many of you who visit the fitness center have the pleasure of interacting with Oscar Lozano. Oscar just celebrated his 16th anniversary here at The Club. Please be sure to stop by and congratulate Oscar for all he has done for The Club. I also want to extend a very big thank you to our January and February employees of the month, Armando Villanueva and Bang Bang Konawet. Armando is in our banquet department and plays a key role with what makes our banquet event business so successful. Many of you see Bang Bang on a daily basis when you first enter the parking garage. He’s always a warm welcome and willing to help at any point. Thank you, gentlemen, for your dedication and hard work, you all are truly a prime example of what makes a private club special.
Thank you to all of you who make our Club so wonderful! I look forward to seeing everyone around The Club.
Best ,
Daniel A. Morenopring has sprung! Bluebonnets and azaleas are blooming, the weather remains mild and fair, and all around our wonderful Club you can see the vibrant and joyous faces of our Members, enjoying all that The Club has to offer with their friends and families.
Even a quick glance at the weekly Beacon, The Club calendar, or The Club’s app or website reveals a preview of the numerous, varied programming offerings, specialty dining features, inter- and intraclub competitive events, and The Club's 75th Anniversary festivities that are on the horizon. There’s truly something for everyone, and I hope that you and your family will enjoy as many of these opportunities as you can.
Springtime also means that we are approaching the start of another season for The Briar Club Barracudas Swim Team, who have a tremendous win record for last decade. This year, the Barracudas will be competing in The Club’s newly renovated competition lap pool, the work on which has been a great success. Not only was the renovation timely, but it was also completed under budget, which has allowed Club management to efficiently redirect allocated-but-unspent funds to other areas of our Club campus around the pool that were in need of repair or maintenance. These efforts have yielded a beautiful, functional, and refreshed amenity and surrounding spaces that all of our Members—and especially The Barracudas—are sure to enjoy for many years to come. Go Barracudas!
In addition to the competition lap pool, other “areas” of our Club are also undergoing renovation. Last year The Club’s Board of Directors tasked the Strategic Planning Committee (“SPC”) with examining and updating some of the provisions of our Club’s governing documents in effort to ensure those documents are current, relevant, and sufficient to meet The Club’s needs. Stemming from the SPC’s work, the Board submitted several Bylaws revisions or amendments to the Membership for a vote at the Annual Membership Meeting last November, and the Membership approved all proposed, updated provisions, as submitted. This year, the Board has again charged SPC with the task of continuing to work with Club management to review The Club’s governing documents and identify remaining areas or provisions that still need updating. As occurred last year, the Board will present any proposed Bylaws additions or revisions to the Membership in accordance with The Club’s governance procedures, including at a Town Hall Meeting, so that the Membership has the opportunity to learn about and discuss the proposals in advance of casting a vote on them.
The Board has also tasked the SPC with assessing and interviewing several architecture firms, one of which the Board will approve for hire to develop a long-term strategic plan for improvements to our Club campus. Creation of this plan will include not only architectural and engineering surveys of our campus, but Membership involvement, too, likely in the form of questionnaires or focus groups. The most important asset of our Club is its Members—you!—so please consider participating in this process however you can when the time comes, so that the architecture firm, Club management, and the Board have as much input and information as possible to use when making long-term strategic decisions for our Club.
So, aside from checking the Beacon, The Club calendar, and The Club’s app or website to learn of upcoming events and programming, keep an eye on those sources for information about any future Town Hall Meetings, focus groups, or other matters concerning those two projects, as well.
Have a safe and happy Spring and Summer, and I look forward to seeing you around The Club.
Best , Melissa StrykerGALENTINES

The Briar Club Barracudas are ready to get back in the pool for another fun Summer full of swimming. We welcome swimmers of all ages and skill levels to join us and help the Barracudas swim to victory! Summer Swim Team starts at age 5 and runs through 14 years old. To qualify for the swim team, swimmers must be able to swim a full length (25 yards) of freestyle and backstroke independently. If you are unsure about your child’s ability to qualify for the team, please contact the aquatics office and we can set up a quick evaluation. For those younger swimmers who are not quite there, we offer our Pre-Swim Team Lil’ Barracudas program for ages 4-7. For the full swim team schedule, online registration, and additional information please see The Club website.
Please follow these Club rules and guidelines to make sure that you and your children stay safe around the pool this summer.
• When no lifeguard is on duty; no one under the age of 18 is permitted to swim in the Family Resort Pool
• All children under the age of 5 must be accompanied and supervised at arm’s length by a responsible adult when in the Family Resort Pool. (If the child is in the water, the adult must be in the water)
• Infants and Toddlers must wear diapers secured by waterproof pants or swim diapers in all Club pools. Swim diapers should be checked frequently (every 30-60 minutes) and replaced when soiled. Please change diapers on the changing table in the family bathroom in the Wellness Center, not on the pool deck.
• Children must be 5 years old and capable of swimming to the side of the pool independently to use the low dive.
• Children must be 7 years old OR 48 inches tall to use the high dive.
• No flips or somersaults are allowed from the high dive, feet first jumps and dives only.
• Children 4 years old may use the pool slide, but must have an adult in the water to assist. Children 5 years and up may use the slide independently.
Thank you & happy pool season!

Thank you!
Spring reminds us of renewal and growth. It reminds us that even when things are going fine, there is promise of something better or greater around the corner. With that spirit, we seek to continually improve our processes and business practices to enhance the overall value of The Club to members.
This year, especially, is significant. The 75th Anniversary of The Briar Club is particularly important. In this industry where some clubs struggle to be relevant and successful, The Briar Club remains vibrant and poised to meet the needs of current members and compete for top-of-mind placement from our members. Do you think of The Briar Club first when considering an evening meal, a birthday celebration, a venue for a corporate event or employee party? Is The Briar Club at the top of your mind?
One aspect of being a successful club is that we enhance member offerings to create meaningful experiences while adhering to the budget. We seek to create WOW experiences that members will look back upon with fond memories and create a la carte food offerings that are both delicious and of value to the member. As we strive to get the right price/value mix with responsible expense management, we want to be the place the members think of first when planning any event or going out for an evening meal.
Another aspect to maintain our competitive advantage is to ensure we maintain the “look and feel” of the campus. Over the past year, we have communicated the importance of maintaining current assets and upgrading their functionality. The most recent renovation of the competition pool and on-going maintenance of Club assets contributes to that goal. Additionally, creating a dynamic reserve study with thoughtful increases to capital (maintenance) dues advances The Club further along in achievement of that long-term strategic goal.
In cooperation with many aspects of successful clubs is to manage expenses in a prudent manner. We seek to do that every day at The Briar Club! To ensure we are not complacent, but open-minded and forward-looking, we strive to develop the behavior of seeking continual improvement. We continually review and negotiate property insurance, healthcare benefits, and vendor contracts. Our aim is for excellence in both operations and capital management. We operate under the premise that making small adjustments can contribute to a significant difference.
As we approach the 75th year of excellence in member service and satisfaction, The Briar Club is strategically poised for responsible renewal and future growth.
Happy Spring…...Happy Summer…...Happy 75th Anniversary!!
