WIN A KIA pICANTO

Dear readers,

Welcome to edition 196. I hope you are all keeping nice and warm during our cold snap. It has been a little chilly over the last week, either that or I have become a huge sook and just cannot stand any form of cold weather!

We have received a huge number of letters to Ed about the Voice vote. As a community magazine, we would like to point out that we have no opinions on this either way. It is up to you to do your research and decide what you think is the right thing to do. As for all the letters to Ed, they are not, or ever will be our

views, these are pages that allow you to have your say. However, we will not tolerate any racist or abusive letters, and these will not be printed. Some have been borderline, so I implore you, before you send your letters to us, re-read them, and delete any inflammatory comments as they will not be printed. Kindness doesn’t cost a thing and there needs to be more of it shown in our society.

I would also like to ask you, our readers, to send in letters to the editor, about the wonderful things that have happened to you on the Island. We have one letter that came

Cutting Edge Elegance: The Ultimate Professional Hair Scissors for Precision and Style

Precision and style go hand in hand in the field of hairstyling. Every professional hairstylist is aware of the significance of having the proper equipment to produce faultless cuts and attractive hairstyles. Professional barber Scissors are one of the most important tools. These state-of-the-art tools are made to offer the highest levels of comfort, control, and precision, enabling hairstylists to realize their creative visions.

It is crucial to look at the anatomy of professional hair Scissors in order to properly comprehend their superiority. The blades are often crafted from Japanese steel, which is famous for its toughness and sharpness, or premium stainless steel. Different cutting methods and styles can be accommodated by changing the blades’ length and form. The pivot point, which is frequently adjustable, enables the Scissors to open and close smoothly, minimizing stress on the stylist’s hand and wrist. The comfort of the finger and thumb rings can be adjusted to suit personal tastes. These components work in unison to provide a tool that guarantees accuracy, control, and comfort throughout the haircutting procedure. For hairstylists and their clients, using professional Scissors has many benefits. First

off, their razor-sharp blades provide clear, exact cuts that produce well-defined haircuts. Because the ergonomic design reduces hand and wrist fatigue, stylists can work continuously without experiencing any difficulty. These Scissors’ exceptional cutting ability also boosts efficiency, allowing for time savings without sacrificing quality. Professional Scissors are additionally made to lessen hair damage, minimize the occurrence of split ends, and maintain the general health of the hair. Clients are pleased, and the stylist builds on their reputation for expertise.

Professional Scissors shears not only function exceptionally well but also have stunning designs that exude class and sophistication. Numerous manufacturers provide a variety of styles, from traditional to modern, making it possible for hairstylists to pick Scissors that complement their individual tastes and salon aesthetic. Some Scissors have cutting-edge features including finger rests for additional stability, ergonomic

offset handles to ease hand strain, and ergonomic handles with anti-slip coatings. These characteristics help the overall aesthetic appeal of the Scissors while also enhancing utility. Proper upkeep and care are necessary to preserve the longevity and performance of professional hair Scissors. To keep the Scissors in top shape, regular cleaning, lubrication, and occasional sharpening are required. To keep the shears cutting-edge sharp, manufacturers frequently offer maintenance advice and care instructions, and many even provide sharpening and servicing services. Hairstylists can keep producing outstanding results and extend the life of their hair Scissors by devoting time and effort to maintaining this priceless equipment.

The use of the best professional hair Scissors boosts a hairstylist’s confidence while also improving their technical proficiency. Stylists experience a sense of professionalism and pride when they hold a wellmade, premium instrument

in their hands. Their clients feel this confidence, which fosters a happy environment and increases trust. Clients may tell if the hairstylist is committed and skilled because they can sense it. These Scissor’s precision and style add to the whole client experience, making them feel pampered and pleased with their new appearance. The best professional hair Scissors become a benchmark for excellence in the hairstyling field, increasing the status of the hairstylist and luring affluent customers who value accuracy and style.

Choosing the best professional hair Scissors means starting a journey toward mastery as well as owning a top-notch tool. Hairdressers who invest in high-quality Scissors are aware that their knowledge and abilities change with time. These Scissors accompany them throughout their professional path, watching them mature and advance as hairdressers. The level of control and accuracy that can be accomplished with these

Scissors motivates hairdressers to continuously push the bounds of their imagination, try out novel methods, and keep up with fashion trends. Professional hair Scissors are a stylist’s extension of artistic vision and skill; they are more than just equipment. These innovative tools enable hairstylists to craft magnificent hairstyles that give clients a confident and happy feeling thanks to their precision, comfort, and style. Professional hair Scissors are the best option for hairstylists who value precision and style because of their exceptional craftsmanship, ergonomic design, and cutting-edge features. Hairstylists can realize their full potential, advance their trade, and build a name for excellence in the competitive world of hairstyling by spending money on the best products available.

*Do you feel Stuck and unable to move forward?

Welcome!!! My name is Genine and I am a fully trained and qualified Feng Shui Practitioner located at Sandstone Point. I am an avid believer that our living and working environments have a great impact and influence on our everyday lives. This has led me to my passion for Feng Shui and enables me to assist

others to live in a harmonious and prosperous environment that supports their life journey.

Feng Shui is not magic - it is the art of living in harmony with the environment and bringing balance to our surroundings –which will in turn support and enhance all areas of your life such as.

• Improve relationships and romance

• Foster good health

• Enhance wealth, business and career goals

• Overall happiness So why have a Feng Shui Consultation you ask. It is very simple.

• Sometimes we just don’t see our “stuff” around us. I can provide you with an objective “read” of your home or workplace and provide you with recommendations on how to improve the energy.

different in every building and therefore every building needs to be treated differently.

• A consultation is often multi-dimensional. It's not just what you see in the space but includes the energy of the occupants. As a Feng Shui consultant my goal is to.

• Locate and tap into the good energy & Circulate it

• Locate & suppress any negative energy

• Balance Yin & Yang I am able to achieve this by utilising 3 different (however entwined) practices of energy

they are Feng Shui, Space Clearing & Geomancy. For more information about my services please visit www. bluelotusfengshui.com.au

WHAT IS A YUMI™ KERATIN LASH LIFT?

It is the ideal way to enhance the natural beauty of eyelashes in a painless, safe, and non-invasive way. This high-quality lash lift solution works by boosting and lifting each individual lash to its full natural potential, combined with tinting the lash to give the illusion of thickness; it gives your eyelashes the perfect curl and lift, and an “open eye” look. Your eyes will look brighter, youthful, and glamorous with this lash lift treatment

FED UP WITH LASH EXTENSIONS, AND WOULD LIKE AN ALTERNATIVE HEALTHY OPTION?

• Lash Extensions can be expensive, need regular touch-up appointments (every 2-3 weeks), need a lot of maintenance, can be uncomfortable, and if not done properly, potentially harmful to your natural lash health.

• With a Yumi™ Keratin Lash Lift, for $99 you have (on average) 6 weeks + of lovely curled and lifted lashes with low, to no maintenance, and are fuss free!

NOT ALL LASH LIFTS ARE EQUAL!?

One of the many ways we differ from other Lash Lift systems - Our hero ingredient – KeratinInside YUMI™ products is where science meets beauty. Keratin is a naturally occurring protein present in our hair, nails, and eyelashes. However, our lashes gradually lose Keratin due to exposure to sunlight, chemicals in cosmetics, and pollutants. Lashes also become weaker and more prone to fall out as we age. There is also a Yumi™ lash

serum available to purchase to keep your lashes strong, soft and healthy.

• The treatment is very relaxing, which lasts up to an hour and a half, and Vanessa aims for an all-round Zen experience with gentle music and a lovely setting. Clients have likened it to a therapy experience, where they can come and switch off and just relax for a while.

The YUMI™ Keratin

Lash Lift - also includes an Upper Lash Tint and Keratin Nourishing Treatment - All Just for $99

Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Sleep disturbance and Brain functionNatural remedies

umber of weeks ago, a middle age woman came to the shop enquiring natural way to help her son in mid 20s, from depression that he was being suicidal due to the relationship break down.

I suggested her that she should try a concoction of natural herbal medicines which consisted of a combination of Shichandra, Rhodiola, Whithania (Ashwagandha), and Californian poppy. The next day, she called me to say that her son, after taking three doses, was feeling amazing. He felt like he was getting back to a normal mindset and was able to return to work. I was overwhelmed of the outcome. Let’s delve deeper into these herbal medicinal properties. Shichandra is an adaptogen which helps the body adapt to stress and promote overall balance. This property makes it potentially beneficial to deal with depression and anxiety. It is believed to support the body’s ability to cope with physical, mental and emotional stressors. Other benefits are detoxification of liver, which is damaged by toxins, alcohol, and medications. It has antioxidant effects which help neutralise harmful free radicals in the body. This protects cells from oxidative stress and potentially reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with aging. Some studies suggest that Shichandra may enhance memory, concentration overall cognitive function and improve mental performance. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which will help with chronic inflammation.

Rhodiola Rosea is a medicinal herb which improves mood and reducing symptoms of depression. It’s adaptogenic properties positively influence neurotrans-

mitters like serotonin and dopamine which play vital roles in regulating mood. Moreover, Rhodiola may increase mental clarity, improve focus, reduce mental fatigue and enhance concentration and reduce racing thoughts. It enhances physical and mental stress and support immune function and reduce the negative effects of prolonged stress on the body.

Ashwagandha is also commonly known as Withania, this is an ancient Ayurvedic medicine. It is known for reducing stress and anxiety, by modulating cortisol levels, a hormone produced in response to stress. It improves sleep quality and promotes relaxation which helps with sleep disturbance or insomnia. Some research suggests that it may have neuro-protective effects and support cognitive function and help enhance memory, improve attention and boost overall cognitive which helps for mental clarity and focus. It also has antioxidant properties help neutralise harmful free radicals, it enhances the activity of immune cells, helping body defend against infections and illnesses. It balances hormone which helps improving reproductive health both men and woman and muscle strength.

Californian poppy helps promote relaxation and reduce feeling of anxiety. It has calming effects on the central nervous system without causing drowsiness or dependency. Due to its calming properties, it is used to improve sleep quality and aid in managing insomnia. It may help individuals fall asleep more easily and enjoy more restful sleep. It also has anti-inflammatory effects, antispasmodic and antioxidant effects which play a role in reducing oxidative stress and support overall health.

Combination of these herbs can provide complementary benefits and addressing multiple aspects of mental health.

Use of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Clinical Hypnosis for

Anxiety and Depression.

Two ladies visited the shop one Saturday morning, concerned about their mother’s mental state. She was suffering from depression and anxiety, and they were worried that her agitation and anger were negatively affecting their father’s health. He was already dealing with health issues of his own. I reassured them that there is a way to improve her current condition. I explained that it would take several sessions.

Their mother came to the session with a doubtful attitude, believing that nothing could help her. However, after the first session, she noticed that she was less angry towards her terminally ill husband, creating a more peaceful environment for both of them. A few days after the second session, she called me and said she was feeling fantastic. I was startled to hear that she only received two sessions, and the change in her was already significant. Her friend made an appointment, inspired by my client’s positive changes. She said ‘If her friend can change, I could change too.’

Two thousand years ago the

Greek philosopher Epictctus stated that ‘People are disturbed not by things, but by the views we take of them.’ So, it is not the events or circumstances themselves that cause us to feel upset or disturbed, but rather the way we interpret and perceive those events. By questioning and challenging negative thoughts or cognitive distortions, we can develop healthier and more adaptive ways of thinking. This process empowers us to cultivate a more positive and resilient mindset, enabling us to cope more effectively with life’s challenges and improve our emotional state.

Simple Ways To Teach Your Children About Healthy Living Practices

Limited Screen Time

- Today’s world has addicting technology. Young people are using some form of electronics all the time. Parents may help their kids use screen time in a positive way that improves daily life by modelling good behaviour.

Getting Enough Sleep - Doctors claim that developing children need a regular schedule and routine to get the most out of their nighttime sleep. Your youngster will be well-rested and rested if deadlines and wake-up hours are consistently followed. Even on weekends!

Exercise - Regular exercise is a path children should naturally take because they play, run, jump, climb, and play longer than adults. You can get youngsters moving by encouraging them to engage in exercise that seems like play. Additionally, youngsters can start moving without going to the gym. Instead, they can go to a playground or park. Flexibility, strength, and endurance should all be included in the greatest kid-friendly exercises. Kids can learn about agility and speed from playing tag

and competing in foot races. Running, basketball and other endurance-building activities are beneficial for young athletes. Tumbling and yoga both improve flexibility.

Always Remain OptimisticEncouraging your kids to adopt an optimistic outlook on life can significantly improve their well-being and resilience. Try to celebrate small triumphs and tell youngsters what they can do rather than what they can’t.

Research Food Labelling

- Examine the nutrition information on your child’s favourite packaged snack labels to teach them about nutrition. A few key elements of the label, such as the quantity of sugar, saturated fat, calories, and serving size, can be your main points of interest. A food must identify its ingredients in descending order by quantity if it has more than one. If sugar is the first item stated, sugar constitutes most of the ingredients in that snack.

Never Force Them To Clean

Their Plate - Children need to understand their hunger characteristics. The clean-plate rule was prevalent while many

parents were growing up, but it doesn’t teach youngsters to understand their body cues. Children are less prone to overeat if they recognize and acknowledge their sensations of fullness.

Lead By Example - Your children will copy you. Your influence on your children’s physical activity as a parent or carer is very significant. Rather than spending time on your phones or watching television. Engage in behaviours you would have your children copy. Like going for a walk!

Avoid Smoking - Your child is more likely to get asthma, allergies, ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia if exposed to smoking. If stopped immediately, smoking in your child’s presence is not possible. Don’t smoke in the car; go outside instead.

Get Creative

With Dental

Health And HygieneEncourage kids to brush their plush animals’ teeth and explain the value of flossing to them. Children can understand the importance of dental hygiene by reading one of their favourite books or learning

about a character getting ready for an appointment. On the other hand, parents can also get more knowledge on the subject by reading dental hygiene books.

Pros Of Healthy Habits Among Kids - Encouraging a healthy lifestyle in your children has many benefits:

• Healthy habits help channel their energy into the right things

• Healthy practices like exercise can sharpen their minds

• Practicing healthy living can help them be in touch with their emotions

• Healthy habits assist in the maintenance of healthy weight When you become a parent, you begin to consider what “being healthy” means and how to impart it to your child. Every action you take in front of your child won’t always serve as the best example because nobody is perfect. You could be shocked to find your youngster correctly pointing you out if they start making good decisions early and frequently.

Raising a family, especially young children, is never easy. It may seem simpler to let go of healthy choices because of the many struggles that come along. But maintaining a healthy lifestyle is too important. You can make this easier by working on teaching good behaviours at a very young age.

As a Master Coach and Clinical Hypnotherapist, Marcelle often found herself frustrated by the limitations of the traditional modalities of psychotherapy and coaching we are most commonly aware of. Many people feel they need medication when the thing they need most is

knowledge. Wanting more for her clients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual health that equips people with the tools & strategies necessary to heal themselves.

After experiencing these lifechanging results herself after her own journey with breast cancer 11 years ago, only a few years after her first husband passed away, leaving her the sole responsibility to raise their three young children, she knew she needed to share the empowering tools and strategies she had learned with others—and soon Mind Management Through Holistic Healing was born. “I knew how it felt to feel alone, lost, misunderstood, not listened

to, even hopeless. Nobody should have to feel that way. We all need to feel supported and cared for”.

Marcelle offers private one-on-one Coaching and Hypnotherapy sessions from the sanctuary of her home. “The tools I teach you are life skills. They help each of us to navigate through difficult times.” By dealing with our emotions in a healthy way, so we not only build resilience but can thrive and over time, feel our sense of growth, leading us to feel more peace and fulfilment.

Marcelle says, “if you learn these skills and techniques, then you will gain the tools and strategies to overcome feeling overwhelmed or ‘stuck in a rut’. Instead, you will learn how to self-regulate your emotions, and this means you will feel calmer and more peaceful, and in turn, create a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Everyone wants that, but often we don’t know how to

obtain it.”

Marcelle is also a Trauma Informed Coach. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Marcelle helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole-body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of co-dependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviours can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.

“Past trauma can make us feel stuck. Often, we don’t even realise how much it is disabling us. If you release these old patterns, then you get to move forward because you free yourself from past burdens.” I look forward to supporting and empowering you to become your best version of you”. On Saturday, 22/07/2023 we held our dragon boat ceremony for Beatrice Curran (24/10/58 - 04/07/2023) who lost her battle with Breast Cancer.

In beautiful weather, we paddled out in our pink and purple dragon boats, accompanied by members of Beatrice's family. Kal-Ma-Kuta and Moora-Moora rafted up together as our Chaplain, Marilyn Cullen, offered a poignant prayer and blessing while we scattered single blooms into the wash.

During a contemplative minute of silence, the intensity of feeling the music, and the undulating floating carpet of colour, we pondered on the special times we've had together and remembered our Beatrice; whilst thanking her for being part of our lives.

Both boats, then paddle-tapped a circle of honour offshore, where we further reflected and farewelled, as we tossed petals and native blooms of all varied colours into the water.

Beatrice will be remembered as "a most kind and generous person who gave so much to others in her role as a therapeutic masseuse, reflexologist and principal of Bribie Island Massage, as well as a valued member of Bribie Dragons. She embodied the spirit of the club, as she supported all of us who asked for care and comfort through her magic fingers".   She was "independent, caring, fair, full of life, adventurous, a great confidante, and had a great sense of fun".  We thank her for the memories; all she did for us, and for all that she was to many.

"Blooms for Beatrice" "Blooms for Beatrice" Beatrice

Like a flower on the water, beauty there upon the sea, Too soon she was taken from us, no one could foresee. A sunny day turned stormy, in a moment's place in time, Her sudden loss left us reeling, leaving disbelief benign. This terrible disease took another toll, that a family had to pay, Having their lives shattered, when Beatrice left that day. Tears fell from eyes of us all, still failing to comprehend, Why this evil thing makes the strong so fragile, in the end. A loss thrust upon loved ones, and close friends to bear, No reason that we could understand, it simply was unfair. Wishing we could have done more to ease her leaving. Yet her spirit was so strong, and we are left grieving. Grief and sorrow for Lindsay and her children, so deep, None could grasp their horrid torment, that made us weep. The innocence of yesterday was lost upon us that day, The sorrow of tomorrow watched, as Beatrice flew away. Though today we mourn in sadness, her loss to reconcile, But as time goes by, a thought of Bea, will simply make us smile.

8 Things Slowing Your Internet Down & How to Fix It

An extremely slow internet connection can be very aggravating in the fast-paced world of today. Slow internet connections can make it difficult to work from home, watch your favourite TV show, or simply enjoy browsing the web. Fortunately, there are several typical causes of internet slowdowns, and even better, there are easy fixes available. So, let’s get started and improve your online experience!

NO.1.

OUTDATED ROUTER FIRMWARE - Ensuring your router is up to date is essential since it acts as the gateway between your devices and the internet. Reduced performance and slower internet speeds might be caused by outdated router firmware. Manufacturers frequently release firmware updates to enhance performance, security, and stability. Enter the router’s IP address and login information in your web browser to access the admin panel and resolve this problem. Check for any available firmware updates after logging in. Download and install the most recent firmware by following the manufacturer’s directions. Your router’s firmware can be updated to improve stability and performance, leading to higher internet speeds.

NO.2.

POOR WI-FI SIGNAL STRENGTH

When you’re distant from your router, or there are several walls in the way, your internet connection speed can suffer dramatically if your Wi-Fi signal is weak. You can solve this problem by moving your router

to a more convenient spot in your house. Set it atop a tall bookcase or secure it to a wall for optimal viewing. Ensure nothing is blocking the signal from the network to your gadgets. It’s also not a good idea to put the router near metal objects or other electronic gadgets because doing so can disrupt the signal.

NO.3.

WI-FI INTERFERENCE

Internet speeds can suffer if other electronic devices interfere with or drain your Wi-Fi connection. The usual suspects include baby monitors, cordless phones, microwave ovens, and even nearby Wi-Fi networks. Signal interference results from using these devices, which use frequencies close to Wi-Fi. Place your router far from any appliances or other electronic items that could cause interference. Change your Wi-Fi channel to one that is less busy as well. Most contemporary routers offer

NO.4.

NETWORK CONGESTION

When there is a lot of internet traffic in your location, network congestion happens, which causes slower internet speeds for everyone connected. This congestion is most visible when numerous users are online at once during peak hours. You can enhance your individual internet experience even though you have no control over the broader network congestion. For tasks requiring a lot of bandwidth, such as online gaming or video conferencing, consider upgrading to a wired connection, like an Ethernet cable. Compared to Wi-Fi, wired connections offer a faster and more reliable connection.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE OPTUS MOBILE PHONE BASE STATION AT SANDSTONE POINT, QLD INCLUDING 5G

We will accept comments on the proposed upgrade until 5pm, 11th August 2023.

NO.5. MALWARE & VIRUSES

Your gadgets can become infected with malware and viruses, which will affect your internet bandwidth and slow your connection. These harmful applications could use your internet connection covertly while running in the background. Use trusted antivirus software to routinely scan your devices for viruses and delete them to combat this. Keep your antivirus software updated to stay safe from the most recent security threats. You should also activate automatic updates for your operating system and other software programs to fix any vulnerabilities. Maintaining malware-free equipment will increase internet speed while protecting your personal data.

NO.6. BACKGROUND APPLICATIONS AND DOWNLOADS

Applications running in the background and downloads might stealthily consume your internet bandwidth. Some programs, such as software updates or cloud backup services, can use a substantial amount of bandwidth without your knowledge. Check your device’s task manager or activity monitor to find and control these bandwidthhungry processes. Any background programs that are not necessary should be closed. If you need a speedier internet connection for other tasks, stop or prioritize large downloads. You can maximize the speed available for your critical tasks by managing the bandwidth utilization of your devices.

NO.7.

OLD WIRING AND EQUIPMENT

If you’re using outdated wiring and equipment in your home that can slow down your connection. If you live in a region where fibre optic or cable internet is available, consider upgrading. Since fibre optic internet transmits data via light signals, it delivers quicker and more dependable speeds. In contrast, cable internet uses coaxial cables and can deliver faster speeds than conventional copper-based connections. If upgrading is not possible, check the condition of all your cables and connectors. Your internet performance might be dramatically impacted by damaged or incorrectly connected wires. Ensure the cables are securely attached to your modem and router and replace any frayed or worn out.

NO.8.

NETWORK CONGESTION 8. ISP LIMITATIONS

In some cases, your internet service provider (ISP) can be to blame for your poor internet. When you hit a specific use threshold, ISPs can impose data limitations or slow your speeds. Review your internet plan to check for any limits or limitations that might hurt your speed. Talk to your ISP about your alternatives if necessary. They might provide packages with unlimited data or higher-speed plans that suit you better.

Music Festival Celebrating the Joy of Music The Origins of Music Festivals

he concept of music festivals can be traced back to ancient times when communities gathered to celebrate significant events and milestones. These early gatherings often included music and dance, serving as a form of entertainment and communal bonding. Over time, music festivals evolved to include a wider range of genres, attracting larger audiences and gaining popularity worldwide. In recent decades, music festivals have experienced a remarkable evolution. They have transformed from intimate gatherings into massive, multi-day events featuring renowned artists and attracting attendees from different parts of the globe. Technological advancements have played a significant role in this evolution, allowing for impressive stage productions, high-quality sound systems, and enhanced visual experiences.

Music festivals showcase a diverse range of genres, catering to various musical tastes and preferences. From rock and pop to electronic and hiphop, there is a festival for every music enthusiast. Some festivals focus on specific genres, providing a platform for niche artists and dedicated fans. Others embrace a more eclectic approach, offering a fusion of genres and cross-genre collaborations. Music festivals offer artists a unique

Topportunity to reach a vast audience and gain exposure. Emerging artists can use festivals as a stepping stone in their careers, showcasing their talents to music industry professionals and passionate fans. Established artists also benefit from the festival circuit, connecting with their audience on a grand scale and expanding their fan base.

For music fans, attending festivals is a chance to immerse themselves in a captivating musical experience. Festivals create a sense of community and camaraderie among attendees who share a love for music. These events provide a platform for discovering new artists, connecting with like-minded individuals, and escaping the routines of everyday life.

Music festivals are renowned for creating unforgettable moments and experiences. From breathtaking performances and captivating light shows to the energy of the crowd, every festival holds the potential for magic. It’s the combination of music, atmosphere, and shared excitement that makes these events truly special. Music festivals have their own distinct fashion and culture. Attendees often embrace expressive and eclectic styles, incorporating vibrant colours, unique accessories, and bohemian influences. Festival fashion has become a significant trend, with fashion brands launching collections inspired by the festival aesthetic.

As the global consciousness around sustainability and social responsibility grows, music festivals have recognized the need to embrace these values.

Many festivals have implemented initiatives to reduce their environmental impact and promote positive social change.

One major focus of sustainability at music festivals is waste management. Festivals are working towards reducing the amount of waste generated by implementing recycling programs, encouraging the use of reusable containers, and providing designated areas for composting. Additionally, some festivals have adopted renewable energy sources to power their stages and facilities, reducing their carbon footprint.

Another aspect of sustainability is promoting eco-conscious transportation options. Festivals are encouraging attendees to carpool, use public transportation, or even bike to the event to minimize the environmental impact of travel. Some festivals have also started offsetting their carbon emissions by investing in renewable energy projects or supporting reforestation initiatives. Social responsibility is also an important consideration for music festivals. Many festivals have embraced diversity and inclusion by promoting a lineup that represents a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, and musical styles. They strive to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees, free from discrimination or harassment.

Festivals are also increasingly partnering with nonprofit organizations to support social causes. They use their platforms to raise awareness about issues such as mental health, human rights, and equality. Some festivals even donate a portion of their proceeds to charitable organizations, making a positive impact beyond the realm of music.

As music festivals continue to evolve, the future holds exciting possibilities. Technological advancements will play a significant role in enhancing the festival experience. Virtual reality and augmented reality may allow fans to attend festivals from the comfort of their homes or explore immersive virtual stages.

Artificial intelligence and data analytics could be used to personalize the festival experience, tailoring lineups and activities to individual preferences. This would create a more customized and engaging experience for attendees.

The integration of interactive technologies, such as wearables and smart devices, may further enhance the festival atmosphere. Attendees could participate in interactive light shows, share real-time experiences on social media, or engage in virtual communities to connect with other festivalgoers.

In terms of sustainability, the future of music festivals will likely focus on

advancing green initiatives. Innovations in renewable energy, waste reduction, and sustainable materials will be key areas of development. Festivals will continue to explore ways to minimize their environmental impact and set an example for responsible event management. The future of music festivals also lies in exploring new destinations and expanding their global reach. Emerging markets and previously untapped locations may become the stage for unique and diverse festival experiences. This expansion will enable more people to access and enjoy the magic of music festivals around the world.

Music festivals have evolved into much more than just live performances. They have become immersive experiences that celebrate music, foster a sense of community, and create lasting memories. From their ancient origins to the vibrant present, music festivals continue to captivate audiences with their diversity, energy, and power to unite.

As festivals embrace sustainability and social responsibility, they pave the way for a more conscious and inclusive future. By reducing their environmental impact, promoting diversity, and supporting social causes, festivals are demonstrating their commitment to making a positive difference beyond the realm of music.

MILESTONE BIRTHDAY DELIVERS MARVELLOUS $10,000 INSTANT SCRATCH-ITS WIN TO BRIBIE ISLAND MAN

A Bribie Island man has unwrapped one of the greatest gifts of all for his milestone birthday – an Instant Scratch-Its ticket that yielded a $10,000 top prize that will allow him to reunite with his son.

The $5 Cash Path Instant Scratch-Its ticket was purchased at Nextra Bribie Island, Shop 10-11 239 Goodwin Drive, Bribie Island. Despite claiming the prize almost a week ago at The Lott head office, the Queenslander is still reeling from the excitement of his windfall.

“We can’t believe it,” he chuckled. “I received it as a gift from my wife for my birthday. I didn’t scratch it for maybe three to four days.

“I can’t believe it was sitting there the entire time and it was worth $10,000!

“This is definitely the most I’ve ever won.

“We haven’t celebrated the win yet as we had a lot of family over, but we’re planning on going on a nice weekend away to the coast. The wait will be worth it!

“This prize has allowed us to plan a trip overseas to see our son and his family. We will be able to stay for a lot longer and explore where he lives!

“It’s wonderful.”

Nextra Bribie Island owner Steven Kurtz said he and his team were overjoyed to have sold a top prize-winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket to a local family.

“What fantastic news! It truly feels as though we’ve won ourselves when we sell a winning ticket to a local customer,” he shared.

“We always hope when our customers visit our store that they’d pick up a winning ticket and even better, a top prize!

“Congratulations to the winning man and we wish him all the best with his Instant Scratch-Its top prize. We hope it allows him to conquer some small but mighty dreams.”

In 2022, there were 141 Instant ScratchIts top prize winners across The Lott’s jurisdictions who collectively took home more than $15.16 million in top prizes.

During this same time, Instant Scratch-Its players enjoyed more than 28.7 million wins across all prize tiers worth more than $261 million. This equates to almost threequarters of a million dollars won on Instant Scratch-Its every day.

The official home of Australia’s lotteries, The Lott operates and markets Australia’s

leading lottery games customers know and love creating everyday winners, winning every day.

Last financial year, Australia’s official lotteries contributed more than $1.6 billion via state lottery taxes and donations to help community initiatives, such as hospitals, health research, disaster relief and education.

NOT THE FANTALE!

In a previous life – when I wrote a column for the Courier-Mail – I wrote an incisive piece about the loss of the Columbine lolly. This chocolate, sweet, sticky dietdefying sweet was one of my favourites and oh, how I mourned its demise.

As if that weren’t enough I now read that the fabulous Fantale – you know, with the probing quizzes about Australian celebrities on the wrapper –is being discontinued. After 93 years of faithful service to dentists the nation over, Allens has blithely decided to ‘delete’ this wonderful little lolly from our supermarket shelves from 23 July. And without a word of warning.

You see, I loved the Fantale, despite all its tooth-ravaging effects. Apart from its scrumptious taste and umami (that’s Japanese for ‘mouth-feel’), it increases the consumers’ knowledge about pop culture.

When I was running my writing workshop business (this

seems like a distant dream) I provided only the best lollies for my clients. There would be no Mentos on my watch! Oh no. Behold the abundantly overflowing bowls on each table, crammed with Fantales and other sugary delicacies, designed to transport the participants into a sugary, compliant coma as they absorbed my considerable wisdom.

Not for the first time I wonder: are these delicious items becoming extinct because I momentarily stopped buying them?

I remember that dark age when the ‘triple treat’ icecream became extinct. There was no warning there either. Not a whisper. Admittedly I was momentarily distracted by the drumstick. But if I’d known my favourite was endangered I swear I would have taken up a petition, mounted a campaign — or at least bought a freezerful.

And then there was the cheesy muffin. Anyone remember them? These were a breakfast staple in our household — wonderfully dense, cheesy, chewy, muffin-ey. My daughter (being a very picky eater as a child) owes her existence to the cheesy muffin.

Once again, I took my eye off the ball (er, muffin) ever so briefly. Sure, there were a few short, meaningless flirtations (one morning stands) with the occasional bagel, and it’s true I had a brief fling with raisin toast (café style).

But I came back. I always do. I came back to the cheesy muffin. Well, to the shelf where the cheesy muffin should have been. And tragically, it had gone. Who knows where?

Quite apart from my feelings of utter devastation and loss, these experiences make me feel like I am the one who’s totally responsible for the continuation of certain comestibles — and that’s a lot of pressure for one consumer, folks.

I can’t be vigilant and true to my favourites all the time. It’s just not feasible.

Currently, I’m avidly supporting the Whittakers Coconut Slab and our relationship is constant and mutually satisfactory. But who can predict an uncertain future? Sure my tastebuds stray occasionally to the Ferrero Rocher chocolate and hazelnut confectionary. Will this spell the death of the coconut slab?

Clearly it’s too late for the Fantale, the cheesy muffin and the triple treat. But we must work together to preserve the Whittakers Coconut Slab. Years ago I proposed the establishment of a ‘coalition of the willing’ to protect beloved heritage foods from extinction. How about an ‘endangered eats’ blog?

Please – join my crusade immediately to save all our favourites from extinction.

Long live the Whittakers Coconut Slab!

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 20)

If you think you’re being fooled, you can’t be being fooled! You can’t be deluded if you’re aware you might be deluded! People who believe they’re being sensible and wise perform some of the most ridiculous acts. August brings dilemmas concerning directions and objectives, strategies and policies, obligations and promises. You’ll do well as long as you remember to question whatever seems beyond question. Doubt what you feel sure about. An open mind is your most valuable asset. It can lead to surprising success. Discover the inner you… completely free audio and video forecasts. PISCES (Feb 20 - Mar20)

You’ve been dreaming of implementing changes. This month, they start to unfold. If you’re apprehensive about what’s happening, it’s because you’ve been holding out for so long you’re running short of faith and fluidity. Circumstances have contrived, in unsatisfactory ways, causing delays that have zapped your enthusiasm. August’s Full Moons (the second of which is in your sign) signal an era of emotional and financial security. Embrace the changes coming your way. They’ve got your best interests at heart. At last!

GEMINI (May 22 - Jun 22)

You’ve got lots to be thankful for. Soon, you’ll have even more. You will also, of course, continue to have lots of reasons to feel challenged and hassled. August won’t provide you with a problem-solving wand! But problems always seem worse when there’s not much hope on the horizon. Rain looks much nicer when the sun’s shining through it. And August brings sources of light and inspiration. Expect to be filled with even more bright ideas than usual. Be ready to receive good news. Support, both cosmic, and worldly is available. There’s more… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

VIRGO (Aug 24 - Sept 23)

Every so often, in the journey through life, short cuts appear. Some are spectacularly effective. They save you minutes, days, weeks, months… even years. Others lead to absorbingly complicated situations that end up delaying your progress. It’s never easy to know which type you’re being attracted to. But in August, you’ve got Mars in your sign. It brings passion and motivation. Even if you choose a path that leads you in an unlikely direction, if you approach it with enthusiasm, great things are achievable.

Right here, right now… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

August kicks off with a Full Moon and ends with a Blue Moon. It’s as if the cosmos is sending visible signs of encouragement and hope. It’s a month where inspired visions can be acted on and positive lifestyle changes can be implemented. Action takes precedent over theory. With dynamic Mars in intelligent, caring Virgo, productivity levels are high. If we focus our enthusiasm on helping others, this energy can instigate improvements that bring more peace and love into the world. The times they are a-changing!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 - Dec 21)

Think about a flat or house you used to live in. Back then, it was your pride and joy. And now? You’ve moved on… and someone else has that pleasure. Your sense of ownership is directed somewhere else. There are lots of things in life that we think of as being permanent (even though, in reality, they’re only transient). Which is why we need to appreciate them while we have them, whilst retaining a sense of perspective. August brings opportunities to move onto new projects. The gains will far outweigh any sense of loss.

A brilliant offer… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 20)

With your ruler, Mars, in earthy Virgo, you can direct your energy in tangible, effective ways this month. Imagination is a sensible quality. So is the art of taking time to enjoy yourself. Practical people understand the importance of time-wasting too. When you try too hard to make every second count you set your expectations impossibly high. And that doesn’t help anyone. By approaching August’s goals at a steady pace you’ll make progress that lasts, and that has a positive effect on your life, and the lives of the people around you. An amazing service… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

CANCER (Jun 23 - Jul 23)

When a situation seems to be crying out for something to be done, it’s not easy to sit back and do nothing. To manage this, you need to rise above the criticism of people who think you should spring into action (and ignore your sense of guilt). As a sensitive Cancerian, this is challenging. Yet in August, you’re smart and sensitive enough to realise that sweeping changes can only come about if you wait for the right moment to act. Trust yourself. By being selective about how you invest your energy, you really can make a difference.

Try this out… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

LIBRA (Sept24 - Oct23)

If August is a song, it’s one of those loud tunes that comes from your neighbour’s house and stops you focusing on what you need to do. Aargh. The beat is so intrusive you’re about to go round to tell them to turn the volume down. But wait. That melody is catchy! Despite yourself, you’re starting to dance! And, when you peer out the window, you can see other people dancing too! Be open-minded this month. Even when you find yourself in situations that don’t immediately appeal, there’s pleasure to be found (and shared).

Our gift to you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

AQUARIUS (Jan21 - Feb 19)

You only have to watch the news to see that the world is in a bad way. Are things really getting worse? Or are we just exposed to more information? I ask, because this month, it’s worth taking a look at your personal news feed and the headlines demanding your attention. August begins with a Full Moon in Aquarius. It’s a sign that a complicated situation in your world is set to improve. Don’t waste time getting bogged down by unnecessary concerns when there’s so much potential to create positive good news stories.

Don’t miss out… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

TAURUS (Apr 21 - May 21)

Should you approach this month with boldness or with caution? Since August encourages innovation, maybe you need to try an unfamiliar approach that resonates with your idea of how things ‘could/should’ be. But isn’t that risky? What if experience turns out to be fundamental to progress? What if you’re better off doing what you always do, and what other people consider to be sensible and safe? Ultimately, your spirit of adventure is a more powerful force than you realise. Soon, it will lead you to your ideal destination. Unmissable gift… completely free audio and video forecasts. LEO (Jul 24 - Aug 23)

Success affects us like an intoxicating drink. And failure acts like an anaesthetic. Both of these effects naturally wear off relatively quickly. Of course, we try to hang onto the more positive states. But the problem with holding on to a sense of achievement is that we end up being overconfident. And if we focus on frustration, we lose our enthusiasm. In August, the New Moon in your sign enables you to see recent developments in a different light. With new perspective, you’ll be able to transform a difficulty into a life-enhancing gain. Especially for you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 22)

The world is a mix of innovative people, who keep having new ideas about how to improve things, and people who do everything they can to resist change. No wonder we struggle to implement improvements! What should you do in August? Struggle to introduce new ideas? Or give up, and just follow the path of least resistance? This month brings inspiration. Your vision is so bright that you have no choice but to pursue it. No, it’s not going to be easy. There will be obstacles to negotiate. But, if you persevere, you’ll succeed.

NEW TO WRITING? Tips & Tricks for Getting Started

No matter how old you are, if you have a story that you want to share then you can be a writer.

We All Have Stories to Tell

Stories are the foundation of how each of us makes meaning of our lives and of the world around us. Stories and writing do not need to be autobiographical. But each of us has a unique experience, a specific narrative that informs our words and our actions. That personal lived experience will always form the foundation of our life as well as our writing. The first tip I would like to share with aspiring writers is to understand your own personal narrative. And the best way to do this is selfreflection, to ask yourself questions, and question your place in the world.

TRANSLATING LIVED EXPERIENCE TO WRITING

Your writing improves when you ask your characters these same questions – build profiles for each of your main characters. These profiles

are separate from the actual story that you want to write but enable you to understand their back story. What are their motivations? What (and who) do they love and hate, or are completely indifferent to? This is a good way to start thinking about sub-text –meaning that lies beneath the surface of the plot – and helps you develop your ideas into something meaningful to you and your readers.

KNOW WHO YOU ARE WRITING FOR

Ultimately you should begin by writing for yourself. The process of writing is not always about getting published. It begins with personal self-expression. Once you understand what you have to say (share) and what it means to you, you are then in a position to start thinking about who will read your work. The ultimate test is that writing is authentic. While writing with a specific audience in mind can help you focus your work it is important to avoid ‘catering’ to this audience. Fashions in writing come and go – writing multiple

points of view and time jumps, for example. You don’t want to replicate your favourite authors, but you do want to be inspired by them – which leads me to my next tip.

READ!

I am often surprised by how many aspiring writers do not actually read – and especially do not read the works of good authors. When I was writing a paper on statistics (yes not very interesting) the first task my supervisor set me was to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

SOME PRACTICAL WRITING

TIPS

1. Write a one-pager that explores what is universal about your story. What is personal? What are you trying to communicate? How

are the different characters connected?

2. Understand the structure of storytelling (Look at the classical narrative structure by Aristotle). You have to know the rules to break the rules.

3. Avoid too much exposition – show, don’t tell.

4. Avoid too many adjectives. Good luck, and happy writing!

Busy Fingers...

DONATIONS THIS MONTH

With the help of our supporters and the many customers that come through the shop we have been able to assist many associations on the island this month including our permanent assistance to VMR for fuel, Hospice for the Palliative Care Suite, and the monthly assistance with Foodbank and Fuel for BI Global Care. We have also been able to assist the BI Legacy with a High Tea for the ladies, this will enable them to get together and enjoy a few hours of conversation and friendship.

BI National Servicemen have been allocated some park area on the RSL grounds by the Sub-Branch, where they are going to erect a memorial, we have arranged to get them a bench, a time for reflection in the quiet grounds of the park. Bribie Outriggers needed new racing skirts for their Matahina race canoe which are required by law when in open water to prevent being swamped by waves. The coordinator of the BI Nature Festival being held in October for three days 20th22nd asked for assistance in hiring the local band Moving Parts and also the Jazz Music Institute for one of the events on Saturday 21st, afternoon/ evening a free concert called Sunset Sounds..

NEW VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED

We are short of volunteers on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and all-day Friday and Saturday morning, if there is anyone who is able to spare a few hours please ring Stacey. It would make it easier for current volunteers if they had a few extra pairs of hands to help spread the load.

VOLUNTEERS

We always welcome new volunteers, so if you have a few hours to spare please give us a call at 3408 1014 or pop into the shop and speak to Stacey, we are registered with Centrelink for Job Seeker requirements. Newcomers to the island can easily make new friends as we have an excellent group of volunteers working with us, it is also a wonderful way of supporting our beautiful island and its residents

SHOP CHANGES

A few weeks ago we closed the shop early on Friday after a couple of days of 50% off everything in the shop. It was decided to do this so that we could change the layout of the shop, allowing room for more clothing racks, as we have limited storage space. It also allowed us to put a lot of new stock out and give the shop a clean, the art has now been hung on spare wall spaces and the art room is full of medical items and what we call the “Men’s Bric a Brac” screws, tools, nails etc to fill their sheds. We hope our customers like the new layout, and we thank everyone for their patience and kindness to staff during the change. We have also ordered a new gate as the current one has a few issues including rust, we do not know yet when it will arrive and whether we will have to close the car park for an hour or so. When we know for sure I will ask Stacey to confirm it on our

REQUEST FOR PRESENTATIONS AND DONATIONS

If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance, please let us know. The min min LIGHTS

Outback Queensland is a place of many mysteries, old and new. But the most enduring of all, is the phenomenon of the Min Min lights. They have never been fully explained. There are, of course, learned theories from professors, unable to accept the possibility of an unnatural cause. Are they the ghostly apparitions of unhappy dead, or perhaps evidence of UFOs from somewhere else in the universe? Or are they a natural manifestation from the unique conditions of the far west of Qld? Many believe they are a supernatural occurrence.

Of course, these mysterious Min Min lights always appear after dark. They were first noted by Europeans near the nowabandoned western Qld settlement of Min Min. The lights seem to have magical qualities, sometimes following observers, even as they speed away in vehicles, while at other times, seeming to retreat shyly. They have become a legend of Australian folklore. Thousands of sightings of the lights have now been reported. They have been known to follow people on horseback, in cars, and on foot, sometimes for hundreds of kilometres. The lights generally travel about a metre from the ground and are often mistaken for the headlights of another vehicle. A recent accident near Boulia involved a car that crashed off the road. The driver swore that he had to dodge a powerful headlight coming straight for him, and he swerved

to avoid a head-on collision. Some rather spooked cockies have drawn their rifles and fired at the lights in fear. According to authoritative pub-talk doctrine, when shot at, the lights disappear, very rapidly, only to reappear soon after. It is also widely affirmed that anyone who actually follows the lights and catches up with them, is never seen again. A number of unexplained disappearances have been blamed on the Min Min lights. You better believe it.

A typical Min Min light is circular, about one-quarter the size of a full Moon and has fuzzy, moving edges, like a buzzing bee swarm. Min Min lights are usually white, but can be green, yellow, red, or occasionally after a few beers, blue and red flashing. The fuzzy orbs can dance around erratically left to right, up and down and back and forth. Occasionally, a single Min Min light can suddenly split into two separate lights. Spooky!

During the nineteenth century, People in Hay NSW often saw a light that appeared while travelling on a mail coach across One Tree Plain. No matter how fast men galloped after the light, no one was able to catch up. The place where this occurred is called the “Phantom Mile”, and is a legend to the locals.

Stories about the lights can be found in several Aboriginal cultures predating the European colonisation. They claimed that the number of sightings had increased in conjunction with the ingress

of Europeans to the outback. “Min Min” was the Aboriginal name for the lights, and passed on to an inn built in the 19th century, about 100 kilometres east of the town of Boulia in the channel country of Central West Qld. Initially, the pub thrived as the Qld frontier expanded and a small township grew up around it. With droughts and floods ravaging the western region in the late nineteenth century, the population gradually dwindled, and during WW1 the pub burned down. Since the time that the hotel was built, there have been regular reports of strange lights dancing through the night sky in the area. The lights are described in a bewildering variety of ways: a small, large, single, or numerous globes, changing in colour, standing still, moving slowly, moving fast, or sometimes following startled travellers for miles. When settlers first saw the lights, they generally interpreted them as marsh lights, explained in British folklore as ghosts of disembodied souls, sometimes referred to as “corpse candles”.

A number of the local Aboriginal tribes insisted that they were not of a natural origin. They believed that in some cases they were the spirits of stillborn children. They have also been said to be linked to an Aboriginal burial ground. A variation on this theme is that the lights first appeared after Aborigines were being killed by settlers. This is possibly a reference to the incident at Battle Mountain near Mount Isa in 1884, when several hundred Kalkadoon people

were reported to have been massacred.

Similar phenomena from around the world have been recorded. These are also widely associated with ill luck, evil and death. The earliest accounts of the Min Min lights by Europeans in Australia, generally had them rising from the cemetery behind the Min Min hotel. This establishment had apparently gained a bad reputation for encouraging stockmen to drink down their pay cheques, giving them no change, while plying them with rotgut alcohol. It was said that many in their subsequent inebriated state were robbed, and murdered. This embellishment added an extra dimension of spookiness to the legend. Perhaps the lights were the vengeful ghosts of these murdered men?

The first coherent written account of the lights came from Henry LeMond, a station manager who saw them in 1912. “During the middle of winter, I had to go to Slashers Creek at the start of the lamb marketing. I did not leave the head station until about 2am, expecting to get to Slashers well before daylight. After crossing the Hamilton River, I was out on the downs, when I saw the headlight of a car coming straight for me. Cars, I thought, though they were not common, were not rare. I took note of the thing, singing and trotting as I rode, and I even estimated the strength of the approaching light, by the way it picked out individual hairs in the mare's mane. Suddenly I realised it was not a car. It remained in one bulbous ball instead of dividing into two headlights, which it should have done as it came closer. It was too green and glary for a headlight. It floated too high for any car. There was something eerie about it. I ceased to sing, though I kept the mare at the trot. She suddenly stopped. She propped her forelegs wide, lifted her head, pricked her ears, and then snorted her challenge to the unknown. The light came on, floating as airily as a bubble, moving with comparative slowness. Though at the time I did not check its rate of progression,

I should estimate now that it was moving at about 10 mph and anything from 5 to 10 feet above the ground. Its size, I would say, at an approximate guess, would be about that of a new risen moon. That light and I passed each other, going in opposite directions. I kept an eye on it while it was passing, and I'd say it was about 200 yards off when suddenly, it just faded and died away. It did not go out with a snap. Its finishing was more like the gradual

was much greater intensity than that type of light. It illuminated the ground around it, but I was too far away from it to see any detail.”

While the mysterious lights continued to be a known - unknown phenomena, serving as a much discussed (and exaggerated) topic over many a beer, experts tried their best to portray a logical explanation. Professor Jack Pettigrew, who was the Director of UQ’s Vision,

fading of an electric bulb. The mare acknowledged the dousing of the light by another snorting whistle. It must have been at least 5 miles or so before I lifted up my voice again in song.”

In May 1981, Detective Sergeant Lyle Booth, of the Police Stock Investigation Squad, Cloncurry, was camped at a water hole about 60 kilometres east of town. Waking at about 11pm, he saw what looked like a car's headlights on the road. The Police Commissioner published a report of Booth’s statement of the sighting. He said that the lights appeared to be moving, but it did not seem to be getting any closer.

“I know this is hard to grasp, but that is how it appeared.” He described the light as white in colour, similar to the light thrown by a headlight. He went back to sleep then awoke about 1am and saw another light about 100 metres southwest of where he'd seen the earlier one. He reported that, “It was not as bright as the first light and had a different yellow colour to it, about the colour of a gas light which is turned down very low and is about to go out, but it

Touch and Hearing Research Centre, provided an optical explanation and data about Min Min lights in an edition of Clinical and Experimental Optometry, the journal of the Optometrists Association of Australia. He used his skills in the vision sciences combined with extensive first-hand experience of the Diamantina region of Western Queensland at night. He was studying an elusive nocturnal bird, the letter-winged kite in the region, where he encountered the phenomenon. “The Min Min light occurs when light, from a natural or man-made source, is refracted to an observer who is tens, or even hundreds, of kilometres away, by an inverted mirage, or Fata Morgana,” he said. “Named after the Morgan fairy, who was reputed to be able to conjure cities on the surface of the sea ice, the Fata Morgana has a real physical phenomenon, being caused by a temperature inversion. A cold, dense layer of air next to the ground (or sea, or sea ice) carries light far over the horizon to a distant observer without the usual dissipation and radiation, to produce a vivid mirage

that baffles and enchants because of its unfamiliar optical properties.“ In a celebrated and authenticated example, the Irish sea cliffs were seen floating in vivid greens and browns above the calm Atlantic, by observers on a ship more than a thousand kilometres away. The Professor also said, “Wonderful during the day, such Fata Morgana can be terrifying at night when a single light source gives no hint that it is actually part of a mirage emanating from a great distance. Even hardened Outback observers can break down when they are unable to interpret the unusual optical properties of the light in terms of their own, very different, past experiences. The unusual terrain of the Channel Country makes the favourable atmospheric conditions more likely, while its isolation increases the impact of a single light source, since the observer knows that it cannot be produced locally but sees it apparently there in front.” The Professor went on, “… some people would prefer not to have the Min Min’s mystique probed by city slickers. I apologise to them. However, knowing more about the unusual weather conditions responsible, could improve one’s chances of seeing it.” He later added, “Increased knowledge has certainly not lessened my own wonderment at the phenomenon on those infrequent occasions.”

OK, good try professor. I prefer the story that it is the ghosts of those who have passed on in terrible deaths, still hovering in the atmosphere to remind the living of the bad deeds of the past…

Despite the inconsistencies among, and within, reported sightings, the scepticism of scientists and the existence of a number of possible natural explanations, the notion that the Min Min lights are supernatural in origin lives on. Tourism promoters refer to them, and ufologists investigate them. Whatever their origin, the lights have become one of Australia's most persistent tales of the unexplained.

TIPS FOR BUYING DOG TREATS LIKE A SMART DOG OWNER

Do you remember the first time you went to the pet food section in the mart and felt amazed and confused by the variety of dog treats? Dog biscuits, chews, dental sticks –the list is going on. And while we all need the tastiest treats for our dogs, it is equally vital to make certain that what we are giving them is healthy and safe to eat. So how can we make the right choices?

Check the Ingredients - Much like human food, first-rate canine treats have real, recognizable ingredients. Look for treats that mention the source of animal protein – like birds, red meat, or fish. Try to avoid items that consist of synthetic colourations,

flavours, and preservatives. Additionally, if there is something you don’t know about, try not to buy it without proper satisfaction and knowledge. We recommend you speak with your pet food supplier for their advice. CONSIDER YOUR DOG’S SIZE AND DIETARY NEEDS - Does your teacup Chihuahua really need a large bone? Probably not. It’s critical to pick treats that might be perfect for your dog. Keep in mind the size of the bone or any treat to prevent choking. Additionally, in case

Bongaree Pet Food

your furry pal has hypersensitive reactions or dietary restrictions, make sure the treats align with their wishes. Don’t be shy to seek advice from your vet in case you’re unsure about what to pick.

DON’T IGNORE DENTAL TREATS - Dog dental health is an actual component! Dental treats are an extraordinary manner to assist oral fitness in between everyday brushings. These unique chews can assist lessen plaque and freshen your canine’s breath. But recall, even as those are a remarkable

addition, they are not a replacement for correct dental care!

THINK ABOUT THE TREAT’S PURPOSE - Why are you buying those treats? Is it for training? A unique bite while you’re away? The reason for the treat can help you in your purchase. Training treats must be small and low in calories, at the same time as long-lasting chews may be larger and denser. Buying treats for your furry friend should be a fun experience but be sure that you’re a smart pet owner and buyer.

Bribie Dragons

Bribie Dragons have been busy this past fortnight. They attended the fundraising BIGGEST MORNING TEA for Cancer Research at the spectacular Ulurayma Retreat, Wamuran. The venue had a panoramic view of the Glasshouse Mountains, lush gardens with exquisite mosaics and appetizing home-created titbits. Our "Pinkaboutit" girls were encouraged to engage in some handson pottery experience amidst great company. It was a very worthwhile fundraising success. The locale was truly beautiful, so secluded & peaceful with many creative artworks to be found all

over the impressive gardens. Later, “seventeen of our Bribie Pink Dragons gathered at 'The Beach House' at Beachmere on Saturday 17th, "Assembly Day". This was to assist the Zonta Birthing Kit project, instigated in 1999, to pack birthing kits for use in third-world countries. These kits, devised by Joy Hazy, an Adelaide doctor, help to provide a clean space & implements for women giving birth. A kit contains a plastic sheet, latex gloves, gauze swabs, a razor blade to cut the cord, strings to tie off, & soap. The premise is that women in developing countries could survive birth

in far greater numbers if they had access to a few basic, clean items. With continual conversation and deft fingering, in 4 hours we collectively managed to reach the goal of packaging 1600 kits! However, the break for a home-baked morning tea and lunch was most appreciated." In contemplation, I think we all felt very lucky to be living in Australia and were most happy to work with the Zonta club.!!

Anyone wishing to contribute to this ongoing project can contact Zonta or the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia via their websites.

Artwork and photographs are integral to wall décor, and you cannot afford to make them look unpleasant. This makes it crucial to perfect every little element on the frame front. The hidden component or hanging hardware at the back of the frame is equally important as a decorative piece. Hence, making the right choice is necessary.

Suitable hanging hardware depends on varied factors, and the options available may seem intimidating. From picture wires and D-rings to adhesive-backed hooks and sawtooth hardware, you may have difficulty deciding which will work best for your requirement. So, here are a few tips for choosing the right hanging hardware:

Consider Frame Size and Weight - The first and most significant consideration is the frame size and weight to ensure it does not fall on the floor. Ensure choosing hanging hardware that perfectly supports the weight and size of a heavy frame. You can easily find such pieces online or at physical stores where

How To Choose the Right Hanging Hardware

you can get them within an affordable range.

Remember, varied picture hangers have varied applications and weight potentials. While the lightduty hanging hardware, such as sawteeth, is perfect for lightweight foam board, art, and canvases, the regular, heavy-duty options, like cleats and D-rings, make hanging medium to large frames and wall décor a breeze. Using the wrong hanger may lead to damages from falling, significant accidents, and loss of the value of irreplaceable or priceless artwork. It may also damage your walls tarnishing their aesthetic appearance by applying stress.

Conversely, the right choice of hanging hardware as per item weight will distribute its weight evenly, thus reducing the risk of wall damage. Ensure you measure the frame weight correctly, as it may directly affect your choice of hanging hardware. The load-bearing potential of the hanging hardware must match the weight you will put on it. Hence, if you want to hang a

heavy decorative item, know the potential of the hardware to sustain the weight. This ensures complete stability and safety.

Most frames already feature hooks, wires, or hangers, but if yours does not have one, flip it to examine its material and understand your hanging hardware options. Picture hangers have metal or wood frames and occasionally polystyrene or plastic frames. Know that not all hangers are perfect for varied frames. Therefore, be clear about the different hangers available and whether they may suit your hanging preferences.

If you want to create a gallery wall with several lightweight and smaller pieces of art or photographs, use a sawtooth hanger. You can screw it directly at the back of the frame and then hang the frame straight into the nail on your wall. These hooks are simple to use and work exceptionally well for hanging lots of art.

You can even choose D-rings, the most versatile hanging hardware in the market, to

hang smaller pieces or with picture wires for larger items. However, before purchase, consider the weight limit of these hooks, as D-rings in varied materials and sizes can hold weights ranging between one and ten pounds.

Security hardware is the answer for valuable or heavy pieces in a gallery, home with kids, or high-traffic commercial spaces. These units feature two elements: one for the wall and another for the artwork or picture frame. When fitted together, both these components lock art on the wall, thus preventing accidents and theft.

Adhesive-style picture hooks or double-sided tapes that simply stick the backing to the frame, hanging and pressing it into the walls, are another easy way to hang any wall art. They are the perfect hooks for apartment dwellers who generally do not like drilling holes in walls. Cable systems and picture rails are a more exclusive and creative solution for hanging artwork on the walls. These interesting and beautiful pieces suspend your frame from wires, in case of a cable system, and from a rod attached to the wall, if it’s a picture rail.

The wall material may also help you determine the hanging hardware for your decorative piece. Different wall materials need different types of hangers because the load capacity of a wall may vary as per its material. For example, wood or concrete walls may have higher load potential than drywall or plaster walls. Also, certain wall materials are prone to damage from drilling, so they work well with adhesive or special hangers. Additionally, understand that a frame’s weight potential may differ based on the wall type you will hang it on.

So, follow these ways to get the apt hanging hardware. Simply understand every aspect of the many hanging hardware options to make the right choice and seek professional advice if you fail to choose.

SMALL KITCHEN, BIG FLAVORS:

HOW TO CREATE A FUNCTIONAL COOKING SPACE

SMART STORAGE

SOLUTIONS:

Effective storage is the key to maximizing space in a small kitchen. Opt for innovative storage solutions that make use of every nook and cranny.

a) Utilize vertical space: Install wall-mounted shelves or magnetic racks to keep frequently used utensils, spices, and condiments within easy reach. Hanging pots and pans can also save valuable cabinet space.

b) Pull-out cabinets and drawers: Install pull-out shelves and drawers to make the most of deep cabinets. These allow easy access to items stored at the back, ensuring nothing gets lost or forgotten.

c) Utilize the insides of cabinet doors: Attach hooks or small shelves to the inside of cabinet doors to hang measuring spoons, oven mitts, or small containers.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL AND SPACE-SAVING APPLIANCES:

In a small kitchen, it’s essential to choose appliances that serve multiple purposes and take up minimal space. Consider the following options:

a) Combination microwave and convection ovens: These appliances offer the functionality of both a microwave and an oven, allowing you to save counter space.

b) Induction cooktops: Induction cooktops are compact and efficient, heating up quickly and cooling down rapidly. They also offer additional counter space when not in use.

c) Slimline dishwashers: If space allows, invest in a slimline dishwasher that can fit into a narrow gap. This frees up

precious counter space and makes clean-up a breeze.

OPTIMAL LAYOUT AND DESIGN :

Creating a functional kitchen involves thoughtful planning of the layout and design. Here are some tips to help you optimize your kitchen space:

a) Work triangle: Arrange the sink, stove, and refrigerator in a triangle formation, with each side measuring between 1 to 3 meters. This layout ensures efficiency and easy movement between the three main work areas.

b) Open shelving: Replace upper cabinets with open shelves to create an illusion of space. Display attractive cookware and dishware to add personality to your kitchen.

c) Light colours and ample lighting: Choose light colours for the walls, cabinets, and countertops to create an airy and open feel. Additionally, ensure ample lighting, including task lighting for food preparation areas.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES:

A well-organized kitchen is essential for efficient cooking. Consider these strategies:

a) Clear countertops: Keep countertops clutter-free by storing small appliances in cabinets or utilizing dedicated appliance garages.

b) Categorize and label: Group similar items together and label containers to make finding ingredients and utensils quick and easy.

c) Utilize drawer dividers and organizers: Use dividers and organizers in drawers to separate utensils and keep them neat and accessible.

With these tips and ideas, you can transform your small kitchen into a functional cooking space that inspires culinary adventures. Smart storage solutions, multifunctional appliances, optimal layout, and efficient organization will help you make the most of every inch. Remember, a small kitchen doesn’t mean compromising on flavour or style. Embrace creativity and think outside the box to create a kitchen that reflects your personality and allows you to cook with passion and joy, no matter the size.

Dear Pumicestone

I know Cost of Living is tough right now. Globally, inflation is impacting everything from petrol to rent, electricity, insurance and bills.

Our government recognises the stress this is causing and we are doing what we can to help.

That’s why every household will get $550 off their energy bills. This will be automatically applied on your next full bill after 1 July. The rebate will come off in equal instalments each billing cycle.

For most people, this will be $137.50 off each quarterly bill. You still get the rebate if you have solar.

If your energy bills are less than the rebate amount, then any additional funds will show up as a credit.

Seniors, Pensioner and Concession Card holders are

eligible for up to $1,072 off their bills – which is $700 on top of the existing $372 Queensland Electricity Rebate. You can check your eligibility online: https://www.qld.gov. au/community/cost-of-livingsupport/concessions/energyconcessions/cost-of-living-rebate

If you currently receive the $372 rebate, the additional $700 will be automatically applied to your bills in equal instalments. Remember, you need to register your Seniors, Pensioner or Concession Card with your energy retailer to receive the $1,072 rebate.

My office has received lots of questions about the Palaszczuk Government’s Cost of Living Energy Rebates.

Local Cost of Living Events coming soon!

Keep an eye out for invitations coming out soon!

I have more Cost of Living Information on my website: https://www.aliking.org/whatali-s-working-on/cost-of-living/ If you need assistance with a State Government matter, please contact me at pumicestone@ parliament.qld.gov.au or by calling 07 3474 2100.

Ceiling Fans / Downlights - Ceiling fans are an effective and economical way to cool and move cooled air around your home. Fans can also

come with lights as well as full remote control including dimming the light. Whether installing a new fan or replacing old fans and dimmable or non-dimmable downlights – call Hans Electrical – we are a Beacon Lighting preferred electrician.

Hot Water RepairsWe supply, install, repair and service hot water systems. To guarantee a fast emergency response to all breakdowns we have a huge range of heating elements and thermostats in stock.

Metering and Switchboard

Upgrades - Many older homes and industrial buildings have outdated metering and switchboards. These can be unsafe and not very accurate. Upgrades are often required when renovating, adding solar panels or solar hot water or facilitating modern metering technologies.

Smoke Alarms - In Queensland, it is a legal requirement that all homes have smoke alarms. Photoelectric smoke alarms are the most reliable. They should be hard-wired, interconnected and have a battery as a backup power source. Smoke Alarms should be tested once a year. When were your smoke alarms last tested?

Testing and Tagging

From workshops to hairdressers, most workplaces have electrical equipment

in use that has never been checked. Every piece of electrical equipment (including power leads) must be tested and then tagged every 12 months. If the equipment is deemed safe to use, the tag must show the date of its next inspection. If not, the tag must warn people not to use the equipment and the equipment withdrawn from use. The Queensland Government encourages you to employ an electrician to test and tag all your electrical equipment. If the equipment is faulty, the electrician is licensed to repair it.

BRIBIE LAWNS EXPERIENCING A MEALY BIG PROBLEM!

Has your lawn recently developed brown spots that seem to be multiplying by the day?

You might have an outbreak of MEALY BUG!

Mealy Bugs are small sap-sucking pests that are often found in warmer climates. They are soft-bodied, wingless and are covered in white, protective wax and leave behind dry looking, damaged grass blades. They produce Honeydew which can cause mould growth on plants, attracts other pests, and can prevent your grass from photosynthesizing. They tend to hide in the moist and protected parts of a plant, usually the dense foliage or underside of leaves, and can have the appearance of small spots of cotton.

Mealy Bugs reach maturity within 1-3 months of hatching, and adult females can lay 300-600 eggs which will hatch within 1-3 weeks. If these pests aren’t taken care of quickly, they can overrun your lawn!

SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Option 1. Mealy Bugs are hard to eradicate, generally needing to be manually removed with rubbing alcohol from each blade of grass. This daunting task could take days or weeks depending on your yard size.

Option 2 Jump on Doctor Google and research old wife’s tales on ‘How Do I Kill Mealy Bug’ just to find the hundreds of different products you ‘could’ use to eradicate them.

Option 3. CALL COOCHIE HYDROGREEN!

Whether your lawn is inundated with weeds, tired and stressed, disease-ridden or destroyed by lawn grubs and pests, Coochie Hydrogreen can help you out.

It’s important to create a balance between DIY projects and those that should be left to the pros when it comes to updating your home. While you can do a lot of things on your own, some home improvements require specialized skills and knowledge. In this post, we’ll look at some of the most popular remodelling projects that you might want to leave to the professionals.

You must hire a qualified contractor or structural engineer if you plan to make structural alterations to your house, such as knocking down walls or adding on. Understanding load-bearing

or repairing a broken tap can be completed by amateurs, more involved jobs call for expert assistance. A qualified plumber has the knowledge and equipment required to complete any work, whether it be installing a new bathroom, moving pipes, or fixing a sewage line. It is advisable to seek the assistance of a professional because doing sophisticated plumbing work without the right training might result in expensive errors and possible water damage. You can make sure that your plumbing system runs efficiently, eliminating future leaks and the need for additional repairs or

the possibility of future electrical issues.

It is advisable to leave tasks like siding replacement and roof repairs to qualified contractors. Your house’s roof and siding offer essential protection from the elements, and any mistakes made during installation or maintenance can result in leaks, mould, or interior damage. The materials will be installed correctly, the proper weatherproofing precautions will be taken, and the work will be finished to a high degree if you hire a renowned roofing and siding firm. Professional contractors have the knowledge and expertise needed to spot

requirements, assuring correct installation, and maximizing energy efficiency. You may enjoy a comfortable home atmosphere while lowering your energy expenditures and environmental impact by hiring experts to replace your system.

Lastly, it’s better to rely on experts who specialize in these fields when it comes to sophisticated renovations like home automation systems, security systems, or high-end appliances. These installations frequently call for complex wiring and technical knowhow, which might be difficult for homeowners without those

walls, support beams, and other crucial elements in detail is necessary to make changes to a building’s structural integrity. An expert will evaluate your project’s viability, acquire the required approvals, and carry out the improvements while guaranteeing stability and safety. You may prevent compromising the integrity of your property and possibly hazardous situations by leaving structural updates to the pros. Specialists may also offer insightful advice on how to best utilize your space, guaranteeing that your structural improvements will not only look wonderful but also perform effectively for many years to come.

Another area that is best left to specialists is plumbing. While smaller-scale chores like changing a showerhead

Electrical work is one instance where hiring contractors is highly advised. Working with electricity can be risky, and if done incorrectly, it can have serious repercussions.

It’s crucial to pick a reliable local business such as Your Electrical Expert whether you need to replace your electrical panel, rewire a room, or install new light fixtures. Professional electricians have the skills and experience to guarantee that the work is completed in a safe and code-compliant manner. They can also spot any underlying problems that could be there and offer solutions that are tailored to your individual requirements. Employing specialists for electrical work ensures your safety while also saving you time and lowering

possible problems and properly handle them, thus saving you time, money, and hassles. You may relax knowing that your property is well-protected, and its aesthetic appeal is improved by having specialists handle your updates.

It’s best to get professional advice while maintaining or replacing your HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system. As a result of their complexity and need for specialist knowledge, HVAC systems must be operated effectively to deliver the best level of comfort. To keep your system functioning properly, a qualified HVAC expert can complete routine maintenance chores like coil cleaning and filter replacement. Technicians can assist you in selecting the ideal HVAC system for your home’s size and energy

qualifications. The systems will be carefully configured, programmed to match your unique requirements, and thoroughly tested for performance and safety by qualified installers. You can ensure that these sophisticated amenities in your housework are flawless and give you the convenience, security, and enjoyment you want by contacting specialists for difficult installations.

Eventhough there are many home improvements you may complete effectively on your own, it’s important to be aware of your knowledge and skill limitations. You can ensure that these upgrades are finished to the highest levels by giving safety, effectiveness, and the long-term well-being of your residence priority.

General Household Tips General Household Tips

Ceiling fans collect dust quickly. Stop blades from throwing particles around the room by cleaning them weekly with an old pillowcase. Slide the open end of a clean pillowcase over the paddle, press down and then slide back, keeping all the dust inside the pillowcase when removing.

Want to renew the steel soleplate on your iron?  "Put a white piece of paper on the ironing board and sprinkle salt over it liberally. Heat your iron to the cotton setting and iron over the salt – there’s no need to use the steam. The salt helps to remove any (grime) stains on the iron plate, with no scrubbing needed!"

Banish carpet dents left by heavy furniture with ordinary ice cubes. Lay the cubes on the dents and leave them to melt. Blot any excess water and repeat if necessary. Then, when the fibres are all back in shape you simply wait till it's dry and then vacuum normally.

Odd socks are a laundry day dilemma. So, here's a new purpose for the lonely 'soles'. Pop them on like mittens to transform them into a practical dust buster. They apparently also make especially good Venetian blind cleaners; tilt slats to a fully closed position and simply wipe across them, or open fully and run the 'glove socks' gently in between the slats.

To remove mould from tiles, use a brush or scourer and scrub with bicarb, mentholated spirits, cloudy ammonia and Epsom salts. Bicarb soda is a cheap deodorant for carpets and upholstery and works especially well on pet smells. For even distribution, use a flour sifter to sprinkle the bicarb over the area. Vacuum off 15 minutes later.

While a dustpan and brush will sweep up larger shards of glass, to get rid of all the tiny unseen bits, there are a few effective things you can use. Try using children's play dough, a piece of bread or even a damp cloth. Simply dab it on top of the small splinters, throwing the cloth or used material away on top of the broken glass, and your floor will be clean and safe to walk on.

Burglar-proof your doors with wooden wedges. Slip them under doors, making it impossible to open except from the inside.

Bream have been above average in size and in good numbers throughout Moreton Bay. I managed my own PB at Tangalooma with this monster 45cm bream weighing in at 1.315kg which was just shy of 2.9 pounds in the old scale. I caught it on an 8lb main mono line with an 8lb flouro carbon leader, about one meter long, size 1 round sinker and a single suicide hook. A mullet cube was used for bait. Just remember to berley with bread and older fish frames. If you don’t get a bite within 30min move spots and try again.

Richard Caldararo has been finding regular flathead up to 65cm on the top of the tide, using pilchards and soft plastics, drifting the drop-offs and casting ahead with plastics to cover more ground.

Woorim Beach has been hit and miss, finding only one fish (a dart) on Saturday with no surface action up to Mermaid Lagoon. Sunday was the complete opposite with tuna busting up to 100 metres offshore for about a 10 km run. Dart was plentiful but just under size. Azz Trabelsi managed a nice mix catch off the beach next to the Army bunkers using a 6-pound line on a 6-foot, whippy rod with yabbies and pilchard strips for bait. Well done, Azz.

Tailor schools are back to normal migration with the earlier big school now moved up the coast.

Tailor move into the passage for a couple of days feeding up on large bait schools until nature calls on them to migrate north, mainly when the temperature drops about half a degree.

This time of the year they are not carry eggs and still have some growing to do until October, when the majority of tailor start to spawn off Frazer Island. Over the last couple of years, they have also been spawning off Moreton Island with 70cm specimens not uncommon.

Birds, bust-ups and even burley are a couple of ways to find these highly sort after sport fish which are great eating grilled, pan-fried and smoked.

Always look after your catch with saltwater slurry, bleed and handled carefully not to bruise the flesh.

Just a reminder 20 bag limit on Tailor with a minimum of 35cm.

Offshore, Jhiel Pepene has managed an awesome solo effort, casting surface lures off Cape Moreton to play, gaff and land this 28.6kg Spanish mackerel. His Stick bait has definitely seen better days but I am sure it will still manage another fish or two. Nice catch Jhiel.

Remember to log in with VMR when heading out and let someone know your plans. Non-members are also encouraged to log on / off and should consider membership as you never know when you may need a tow.

As per the QLD Fisheries rules on Snapper and Pearl Perch, there is a current closed season between 15 July to 15 August. Just a reminder though when the close season finishes, you can only have 4 fish per person for both species, and for snapper, only one over 70cm.

Bribie Island AND Moreton Bay

Ideas for Making the Most of Deep Sea Reef and Game Fishing Charter Marine adventures are one of the best ways to spend time with family and friends. Going on these adventures can unlock your sea enthusiasm and appreciation for what the sea life offers. You can also engage in games like fishing competitions and deepsea reef diving. Planning such adventures alone may require more resources hence the need for a fishing games charter.

You are not limited in areas you can visit; hence, you can subscribe for sea, ocean, lake, local and global charter services as long as

you have all the fun. Charters such as deep-sea, reef and game fishing charters offer a wide range of products and packages, such as private, friends, and family, to enable you to venture into the sea for fun activities such as bucks’ day fishing. Before you subscribe for the charter or pay for the adventures, consider these ideas to help you plan your upcoming adventure.

SELECT

THE

IDEAL LOCATION

There are many ideal locations for fishing adventures; hence you need to select the locations carefully. Select regions with large and deep coral reefs to increase the fun of fishing and deepsea diving. The deeper the

Reef Fishing

sea, the larger the coral reef, and the more fish species to view that may not be available in other places.

THE FISH AND MARINE SPECIES YOU ARE TARGETING

When selecting the charters, you should consider the fish species and other marine creatures in the area. It would be meaningless to visit regions with the same fish species in other areas previously visited. There is no need to visit regions with ordinary and common fish species; strive to get charters that offer a view of other unique marine life. Select charters for deep-sea diving to visit marine plants and explore new colonies. If you plan a fishing adventure, select charters that will allow you to explore deeper oceans to catch rare and one-of-a-kind deep-sea marine fish. Some regions are also known to have only certain species alone; hence if you are interested in fishing for the species, you can visit such places repeatedly.

CONSIDER THE FISHING SEASON

If you are going on a fishing adventure, you must understand that big and other aquatic wildlife tend to migrate based on the season. They migrate frequently; hence, you must plan your trip based on their migratory behaviours. If you are interested in a fish species, you need to confirm if they are migratory, then select an ideal time when you will get them in large numbers. The best time to see a large aquatic life is during the summers when the fish will likely come closer to the shore.

Group Fishing Adventures and Charters

Going fishing as a team will be more fun than alone; hence you can invite friends and family for the trip. Consider charters that offer group ventures and discounts for such ventures to attract more people. It will be cheaper to pay for family and friends’ packages rather than everyone paying for their package. Moreover, you can fish together and use one boat instead of smaller vessels. With group charters, you also get other resources, such as advanced fishing items and boats that can go deeper into the sea for the team to explore the sea. Therefore, if you plan your next charter, invite friends for maximum fun.

EXPLOIT DISCOUNTS AND OFFERS

Beware and be on the lookout for fishing offers and coupons that may vary based on seasons. You can register for the notification with the charter services and get any emails about the upcoming adventure. These offers will help you save on costs. Alternatively, you can book in advance to pay lower than the lastminute rush when the demand is high.

Fishing adventures and games can be a lot more fun than anticipated. The fun may vary based on the charter services you select and their offers, therefore read about the offers, be on the lookout for offers and invite some friends to make the venture more fun.

FISHING, BOATING AND ADVENTURES

Fishy Facts - Lures Vs. Bait Part 2

Just as artificial powerbaits have made baitfishing in freshwater more ‘novice’, so has the use of artificial baits, or soft plastics made lure fishing less technical for novice lure anglers. As mentioned earlier, many of these soft plastic ‘baits’ blur the line between bait and lure, many of them are scented and edible, and can actually be fished statically so fish pick them up and chew on them. The upside of lure fishing is that it is generally a ‘cleaner’ fishing method where there isn’t any necessity to collect, use or store ‘smelly’ baits. A wide variety of lures can be collected and easily stored in convenient tackle boxes and carried about and used whenever required without

the need to ‘buy or collect’ fresh bait before every fishing trip.

The downside of lure fishing is that it can be expensive if you start using (and collecting) intricate hard-bodied swimming lures that can be lost on snags and fish etc. Using soft plastic lures is far more economical (and just as effective) as the jig heads and the soft plastic tails are less intricate in their manufacture and therefore less expensive.

The same basic, light to medium spinning rod, reel and line outfit is perfectly suitable for lure casting (hard and soft) for most bread and butter, salt or freshwater fish species. A straight monofilament line to lure rig is perfectly

adequate to get started and catch fish.

To summarise, there are no hard and fast rules as to when one method is better than the other. If you’re taking the kids on holidays to the beach, and want to have fun and catch a few, then my suggestion would be to start them off using bait to chase bream and flathead etc. It’s possible to set up a few rods and keep all the children close at hand around the water while fishing from the beach or jetties. Safety around water should be a key factor where kids are involved. As they grow, and if they show a keen interest in fishing, then getting them started using soft plastic or basic lures and chasing easily caught fish such as flathead in

saltwater or redfin in fresh, can kick-start their lifetime fishing adventures.

If you’re just after a feed of fish, then you can’t go past fresh bait and local fishing advice. If you’re more interested in moving about and putting the odds back in the fish’s favour, making your fishing more challenging, and releasing more fish than you keep, then lure fishing is probably for you.

No matter what method you choose, make it enjoyable, fish responsibly, take your rubbish home with you, don’t leave discarded fishing lines, hooks or plastic packaging lying around, and most importantly, limit your kill.

Whilst you might be excited to jump in your new van and head off, there are a few things you should plan before taking off. We’ve put together a checklist to help you not forget the important things and we’ve included a few hints and tips from the pros.

CHECKLIST

• Ensure you have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket on board.

• Make sure you have a well-equipped toolbox including a mallet, screwdrivers, tent pegs and clothes pegs, a long power cord, a power board, guy ropes (they can be used as a makeshift clothesline) and annexe matting.

• Citronella candles, mozzie repellent and sunscreen

• 12V chargers for any of your electrical items (don’t laugh, we’ve all forgotten them!)

• Some vans don’t have a toilet or shower. If this is yours take a 12V shower (or Hot Water on Demand if you want the very best) and a portable toilet for when you’re in remote areas with no facilities

KITCHENWARE

• Take some small-sized containers and plastic wrap to keep leftovers and any open items in the fridge.

• If you love to cook over an open fire (when permitted) include a jaffle iron and camp oven

• Gas lighter and matches.

• Torches and spare batteries

• Take a spare portable stove or BBQ to cook outside; fish can be especially smelly to cook and if you cook it outside the smell won’t go through your bedding, clothes and linen

FOOD

(Just a few items that sometimes get forgotten)

• Salt and pepper

• Sauces – tomato, BBQ, mayo etc.

• Tea, coffee and sugar

• Rice, pasta and oil

• Canned food is great as space is limited when you have a small fridge. Try corn, peas and fruit.

• Long-life milk

CLOTHING MUST-HAVES

• No matter how warm the weather is, always take at least one tracksuit for those cooler nights or an unexpected change.

• One good outfit for special occasions

• Hat and beanie

• Swimmers

• Sandals, hikers, outdoor slippers, Crocs or a pair of thongs to wear to and from the shower.

RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO.

• It’s a good idea to have your vehicle serviced before you go, especially if you’ll be away for a long period of time.

• Check that your gas bottles are full, securely fastened and turned off.

• Make sure the fridge door is locked and

don’t leave anything out on the benches or shelves as they will get thrown around during transit.

• Lower your TV antenna (if it’s not fixed in place)

• Attach your caravan mirrors ensuring they are firmly secured and make sure you can see adequately before moving off.

• Ask someone to stand outside and check that the brake lights, indicators and headlights are all operational

• Make sure all the windows and hatches are latched.

HANDY HINTS & TIPS FROM THE PROS

• Line your kitchen cupboards & drawers with non-stick rubber matting to stop cutlery and kitchenware from moving during travel.

• Have a second set of everything that stays in the van so that all you need to pack for each trip is your food and clothes.

• Before you go transfer all your food items into plastic containers to save any broken glass in transit

• Carry a second cast iron frying pan that can be put directly onto an open fire. This saves your good one.

• Keep a dirty clothes bag so you can carry your laundry to and from the laundry mat.

• Take a large plastic storage box with you for all your tent pegs, annexe matting, rope and chocks, as you may need to pack up when wet.

Elké Swain caught this 80cm flathead off a lure when fishing to the left of Little Goat Island. It was safely returned as it was over the legal limit. Unfortunately, Elké wasn’t aware of how to hold it properly, but she does know now, so next time she said she will do it right! Elke’s first catch on a lure 15mins prior was 37cm and she had to put it back and on her second go she caught this beauty. Elké said,

“My heart was racing for about 15mins afterwards, I was so excited and exhausted, she put up a good fight.”

THE MANY TYPES OF MECHANICS & HOW THEIR SAFETY IS ENSURED

THE AREA OF MECHANICS IS BROAD AND INCLUDES SEVERAL SPECIALTIES, EACH WITH ITS OWN SPECIAL SET OF KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES. SAFETY COMES FIRST IN ALL FIELDS OF MECHANICS, WHETHER IT BE AUTOMOTIVE, AIRCRAFT, OR INDUSTRIAL. PRECISION, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, AND RESPECT FOR ALL SAFETY REGULATIONS ARE ESSENTIAL IN THE FIELD OF MECHANICS. EVERY PART OF THE MECHANIC’S JOB CENTRES ON GUARANTEEING CORRECT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS, COMPREHENSIVE INSPECTIONS, AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PREVENTATIVE MEASURES. BY PUTTING SAFETY FIRST, MECHANICS NOT ONLY LOOK OUT FOR THEMSELVES BUT ALSO FOR OTHERS WHO DEPEND ON THEIR KNOWLEDGE.

Automotive mechanics

are experts in the upkeep, diagnosis, and repair of many types of vehicles, including motorcycles, trucks, and automobiles. They are quite knowledgeable in electrical parts, drivetrains, suspension systems, and engine systems. They are adept at diagnosing and fixing complicated technical problems in addition to doing standard maintenance like brake checks and oil changes. Automotive technicians use cutting-edge diagnostic equipment and technologies to ensure that cars are safe, dependable, and operating at their peak potential.

Safety in automotive mechanics is ensured through adherence to industry standards and protocols. The right safety precautions are taken by mechanics, including donning PPE like gloves, safety glasses, and work boots, also some accessories like Onboard safety equipment, escape rope for the cockpit, escape slides, and first-aid equipment. Additionally, they use safety tools like wheel chocks and jack stands to secure automobiles while they are being repaired.

Aerospace Mechanics

The upkeep and repair of spacecraft and aeroplanes is the responsibility of aerospace mechanics. They have a special understanding of the engines, hydraulics, avionics, and flying controls of aircraft. Aerospace mechanics ensure that aeroplanes adhere to rigid safety requirements. To maintain aircraft in top shape, they carry out regular inspections, solve system issues, and carry out required repairs. Their knowledge is essential for guaranteeing the effectiveness and safety of air travel.

Due to the crucial nature of aircraft operations, safety is of the utmost importance in aeronautical mechanics. To assure compliance with aviation norms and standards, mechanics go through rigorous training and certification programs. They do comprehensive inspections, follow manufacturer-provided maintenance guidelines, use safety tools like aircraft tail stand, and follow rigorous maintenance plans to ensure the safety of crew and technicians.

Marine Mechanics

Boats and other watercraft maintenance, repair, and service are the areas of expertise of marine mechanics. They are experts in electrical systems, navigational equipment, propulsion systems, and marine engines. To guarantee the dependability and safety of watercraft, marine technicians execute essential repairs, diagnose problems, and conduct regular inspections. Serving recreational boaters and industrial maritime activities, they work at marinas, boatyards, and repair shops. Adherence to maritime laws and best practices ensures safety in the field of marine mechanics. Mechanics get instruction in marine safety, including how to use a personal flotation device (PFD), put out fires, and handle emergencies. Additionally, they adhere to safety procedures while servicing boats, such as locking up the vessels while they are being fixed, handling marine fuels and chemicals carefully, and lifting objects safely.

HVAC Specialists

HVAC mechanics’ primary focus is heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They have an extensive understanding of ducting, heat pumps, furnaces, air conditioners, and other HVAC components. HVAC technicians ensure that equipment operates effectively, provides the best interior comfort, and complies with energy efficiency requirements. They carry out routine checks, maintenance, and repairs to keep HVAC systems operating efficiently. Following industry standards and regulations, such as those established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), is one safety strategy for HVAC technicians. The ability to recognize possible electrical risks, handle refrigerants securely, and install and repair HVAC equipment are all skills that mechanics are taught. To provide a healthy atmosphere for building inhabitants, they also place a high priority on ventilation and indoor air quality.

Safety is a top priority for automotive technicians, who adhere to protocols and put PPE to use. To preserve aircraft safety, aerospace mechanics must undertake intensive training and follow stringent guidelines. To reduce the dangers connected with heavy equipment, industrial mechanics develop extensive safety systems and procedures. Marine mechanics adhere to maritime laws and norms to provide a secure atmosphere for working on boats. To create a healthy atmosphere, HVAC technicians make ventilation and indoor air quality a top priority. Although each sort of mechanic has specific and different safety requirements, however, they all strive to protect the welfare of both the technicians and their clients.

Dear Editor, The Voice --- Let’s get practical. The Voice is aimed at influencing the Federal Government.

letters to the editor

TAGED Aboriginal people?

Dear Editor,

The sign at the start of the Bribie Island bridge says, “Welcome to Bribie – a Fauna and Flora Sanctuary.” Oh no, it’s NOT – these are the “Killing Fields”.  We have just phoned in our ninth Kangaroo roadkill, 2 of which were mothers and Joey’s. All these road kills were on either Sunderland Drive or Avon Avenue, and we know there is far more carnage elsewhere on the island.

Let’s stop all the BS and face up to reality.... it’s time to fence the National Parks.

Annette & Chris Schnack

What does the Federal Government do? It collects our tax money and distributes it to State and Territory governments who then distribute it to the Local Councils. The Local Councils’ work affects the community more directly than the Federal or State Government’s work.

Does the Voice intend to influence this funding distribution? In what way could the Voice influence these distributions to aid the DISADVANTAGED Aboriginal people?

The Federal Government also makes laws. What laws can the Federal Government make that would help the DISADVAN-

Dear Editor

The DISADVANTAGED Aboriginal people, as I understand it, are those suffering frequent incarceration, domestic violence, homelessness, and lack of employment. I don’t have the answers to all of these problems but I believe we should look to the future. I’m sure there are actions that we should be undertaking that will require cooperation with Aboriginal people and some highly specialized qualified people. Especially for the Adult Aboriginal people who have a long history of poor living standards. I wonder whether the Voice intends to have the Federal Government set up highly elite groups of academics from the various University groups undertaking indigenous studies. But I feel it requires Local Government involvement

Here's a helpful tip for undecided voters in the upcoming Referendum who are puzzled by all the claims being made about The Voice.

The Australian Associated Press (AAP) has a fact-checking service. It's committed to truth and accuracy and its conclusions about the veracity of news and social media content are formed through rigorous questioning, careful consideration of evidence and verification using multiple sources.

The work of AAP Factcheck’s experienced journalists is subjected to a strenuous review process. They do not editorialise or impose value judgements on the subject matter and do not focus on a single issue, one side of an argument or one source.

What an extremely useful service to provide for free. They can be located on the web and Facebook at:

• https://www.facebook.com/ AAPFactCheck

• https://www.facebook.com/ AAPFactCheck

Here are examples of their recent investigations.

• FALSE: Every piece of legislation going through federal parliament would have to be approved by the voice to parliament (claim spread on social media).

TRUE: The voice would only be able to make representations on issues relating to Indigenous Australians.

• FALSE: The claim that five questions will be asked in the upcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament (claim spread on social media).

TRUE: There will be one question.

rather than Federal Government to be effective.

It may be quite different for Aboriginal children who might benefit greatly from the teachings of the Dreamtime Stories by their parents and their Nations Elders, which I believe teach respect for their families and their Nations laws.

Another consideration is financing the Voice. Do the advocates of the Voice expect the cost of maintaining the Voice to come from Government funds, i.e., taxpayer’s money? As I see it the Voice will be like another Government Department and that, I would expect, will be quite expensive and not particularly successful.

• FALSE: The claim that the Indigenous Voice to Parliament will convert all private land in Australia into native title land (claim spread on social media).

TRUE: The proposed voice will have no impact on native title laws or existing private property rights.

• FALSE: The claim that a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed the voice will propose Indigenous people only pay 50 per cent of the rate of income tax (claim spread through social media).

TRUE: There is no such proposal in any FoI response related to the voice.

• FALSE: The claim that the voice to Parliament will become a fourth constitutional power (claim spread on social media)

TRUE: The voice is proposed to be an advisory body with no actual public power.

• FALSE: The claim that Labor has used $360 million of taxpayers' money to fund the 'yes' campaign (claim spread on social media).

TRUE: The money has been set aside for running the referendum and providing a neutral education campaign.

AAP FactCheck is yet to deal with the claims of First Nations people receiving an early pension; all new liquor licences will be vetted by The Voice; all the coastline will be transferred to First Nations people and they'll be able to tax people using beaches; and all rivers and streams will be transferred to First Nations people allowing them to tax people for using water.

I can't wait.

Please call 3408 7221.

Dear Editor and Community, I have just found out that the Queensland parliament passed a new law that allows people to change their gender on their birth certificate WITHOUT having reassignment surgery. I rang Ali King's office to ask which way Ali voted and was informed that she voted Yes! I don't know about you, but I didn't hear any word, consultation, written article, or Facebook post that informed the community that Ali was going to vote yes to this.

I was told by Ali's secretary that I was allowed my 'opinion' that there are two genders, and that Ali didn't need to tell her community about how she will vote on this law.

Now if I said I identify as a senior citizen (at the age of 47) I am sure the government would disagree with me and not pay me a pension. Would they even allow me to change my birthdate? I don't think so. So why can you change your biological gender whilst still maintaining/having those very factual real gender attributes?

If you are born biologically male (or female) and you have not removed your male (or female) attributes, then surely you are still a male/female and changing your gender on your birth certificate would be a fraud?

Please feel free to contact Ali King's office and ask why she voted Yes to pass this new law without discussing or informing her constituents (that voted er in btw) first. Regards,

Identifying as a senior citizen

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, Recently ABC radio asked listeners to nominate the song that best described the feelings of homesick Australians while overseas. Two suggestions were: London Still by the great West Australian band The Waifs; and I still call Australia Home by the iconic Peter Allen. Both songs evoke strong feelings about our home country.

After listening, I pondered on how our Indigenous Australians reflect on the current issue being tossed around by the two sides vying for our vote on granting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander citizens a say in improving their life chances by giving constitutional recognition of their voice to advise parliament on issues of direct effect to their

Dear Editor,

There has been a lot of publicity about homelessness and public housing. I do not think the two should be put in the same basket. Some choose to not be confined by bills and society's restrictions, but of course, many do need some form of assistance, especially those women with children from violent situations.

One of my concerns has always been the state of the homes that are given out to those, supposedly in need of a roof over their heads at the expense of the taxpayers. In Bongaree there are such houses and one near me should be evicted even though they have children. Three times that home has had to be renovated, and the family placed in a hotel while this happens, again at the taxpayer’s expense. Where is their show of obligation and appreciation to those that provide this home, you, the taxpayer?

Children are feral and do not attend school nor are disciplined in a normal way, so

improved futures. The Uluru Statement from the Heart is the culmination of a very long struggle dating back to the early 1900s, not counting the earlier frontier wars and ravages of imported diseases during which many Indigenous people were eliminated.

Denying the rights of groups of people to obtain what is theirs to obtain is nothing new in democratic societies, especially in Australia. One has only to reflect on the struggle by women to get the right to vote; the strikes to achieve an eight-hour day, fair pay, sick leave and annual leave; the divisive campaigning that led to parliament changing laws to grant marriage equality; and now the very destructive, polarising direction being followed by those

no example set but to become like their parent/s yet they continually are housed with obviously no follow-up or rules for them like other renters have. What gratitude and care do these people give back to those that have provided it? Many are good tenants but as we continually see in public housing areas the houses are trashed, inside and out, and many now lay vacant because of this happening. If they are to be given a roof over their heads then make them responsible and have caveats on their occupancy, they must pay for the damage, even if it is taken out of their pensions or wages, and they sign a contract that states if they do not maintain it then they will be evicted. Not rewarded with a holiday in a hotel. Public housing is necessary, but I think it is time to change the how and who, and get the public servants out there and see what is happening in reality and who really deserves these homes.

opposed to the indigenous voice to parliament. But why do such struggles have to be that way? Is it perhaps because the changes threaten the Establishment, the power base?

One has to ask, “What sort of a country are we, that Indigenous people have to be further shamed, ostracised and abused just for being Indigenous? Why does the use of misinformation and disinformation have to be the modus operandi by those advocating against the voice?" With around three months until we vote to support or deny the voice to parliament, one has to hope that the tenor of the campaigns is much more respectful and factual.

Dear Editor,

My solar inverter is 14 years old and the panel which tells me what I’m collecting energy has gone blank. When I discovered this, along with an ant nest in the connection switch, I looked up the BI service directory and found an ad for Powered Electricians and Solar.

That was Friday, and by Monday, Charlie had visited to inspect the system, and when I couldn’t find anything wrong with the connections, he said there would be no charge! Now that’s what I call service.  Now that I have received my power bill which confirms the diagnosis, I would like to recommend Charlie to all readers.

The fuel farce continues, and no one seems concerned – not, even, the RACQ – supposedly the motorist’s friend. The cost of fuel feeds into every product and is, therefore, a significant component in the cost of living. The government says they are concerned but whilst we see the lips move it’s apparently just to check that they are working.

Recently it was noted that from about Beerwah, north, around the highway, west, even as far as Kingaroy, fuel was some 40c cheaper than around Caboolture/Bribie. Two days later, the discrepancy. had reduced to around 25c and about the same, 4 days later.

If the outer areas can trade at around $1.75 with, presumably, lower volumes, then motorists around here are, apparently, being ripped off.  Looking at Brisbane I even see prices as low as $1.57 and the Gold Coast as low as $160.7. So, hound your local member and the RACQ to do something about, what seems to me, something very wrong. Ruggles

We apologise for the printing error with the last issue- this is the July newsletter. This will circulate through the East Pumicestone area, and we are investigating a hard copy being made available in the Bribie Central Arcade, courtesy of Charter Hall.

The Bribie One / Bongaree NHW meetings will continue on the third Tuesday of each month (except December) -at 9.30 am ANZAC Room Bribie R.S.L. and we will still engage interesting guest speakers from local organisations and further afield.

Congratulations to Sandstone Point

Hotels RODEO Day and Fireworks. A great day with NO major hassles with neighbours

LETS

and that includes the fireworks- it can be done! The Q.F.S – S.E.S. and Park Rangers should also be congratulated on a very successful burn-off of the bush around the bottom end of Bribie. Also -thanks to the Lions and volunteers who provided food to feed the workers over the three days’ burn-off.

Have you noticed that the Bribie Island and District Neighborhood Centre has moved to No 50 Verdoni streetjust up the road from where they were? The move is to allow for a new purpose-built building to be erected on the old site.

Cars parking on the footpaths blocks pedestrians from walking past. A bad habit! I see red- when residents and children are forced to walk out onto the road just to walk down a street because somebody parked their car across the footpath. I know we live in a Holiday resort community, but we still should abide by the rules.

You are not allowed to park on footpaths, divided strips –

Bicycle paths- painted islands or nature strips adjacent to a roadway. You can be fined by MBRC or Qld Police

What can you do to help solve and or prevent crime? For starters- look at installing CCTV cameras on your property. Report suspicious activity or information and a possible crime, to Crime Stoppers -anonymously on 1800333000 and complete the online form.

If criminal activity is happening now! call triple 0 and file a Police Report.

It is up to us – Police cannot be everywhere- still require action or an answer call Police Link on 131444. See you at the next meeting Tuesday 15th August -all welcome. Thanks, Area Coordinator Bribie One NHW -Greg Rollason 0431598560.

COMMUNITY

We had a gentleman call and told me about his experience with a pair of con men who defrauded him, and another neighbour last week and we want to warn you that they are hanging around.

This is Duncan's story…

Two UK nationals, with strong Yorkshire accents, came door-knocking saying they were doing another job in the same street and could offer a reduced rate for immediate roof restoration including:

• Repair/replacement of damaged/cracked tiles

• Repointing of ridge tiles

• Cleaning and sealing the entire roof

• Repainting with quality roof paint with a fourteen-year warranty.

• Required cash-only payment for a reduction on the normal price.

Duncan swallowed their story and agreed to the price of over $4000. He paid cash on completion, but they could not give him an immediate receipt or invoice but said they would email it ASAP. Now Duncan is in his mid-70s and cannot get up on the roof to check the job, but he could see that they had missed parts and he asked them to make good that omission. So, they did spray a little more, but from ground level!

Duncan asked for them to leave some paint to touch up which they gave him a partially filled tub, but as they left in a hurry, Duncan did not get to check the paint. To his dismay, the tub they left was almost all water, pretty much just some paint residue and the water that they flushed their paint hoses out with.

Taking the tub of “touch-up” paint to the Brisbane distributor, Duncan’s concerns were realised as they confirmed it was almost all water and quite useless for any purpose. They were most concerned that their brand products were being misrepresented and the likely damage to their brand reputation.

The next day Duncan got a local roof restoration business to inspect the roof, which confirmed his

worst fears, no repair work had been done and what had been done was with extremely poor workmanship and very scant/thin coverage, missing many areas. There is no warranty and no paperwork from these shonky operators and now Duncan shall have to pay again for a proper restoration job from a reputable business.

Duncan’s neighbour, who had them paint her driveway, rang them to complain that the colour they used was not what she had requested, and she wanted them to return and remove their plastic sheeting and clean up but has been unable to get any satisfactory response from them.

Likewise, when Duncan tried to call them back the respondent said he didn’t know anything about it and hung up. This has all been reported to Bribie Island Police, but they have advised Duncan that it is a civil matter, not a police matter and that he should follow it up via other channels such as Queensland Building and Construction Commission. Duncan did contact QBCC, but their response was totally inappropriate.

Duncan is at a loss as to whom to contact now to get some action on these fraudsters who seem to be able to operate with impunity. He said, “Of course, I realise that I did not apply common sense and due diligence before engaging these characters and that ‘Buyer Beware’ sense should have alerted me not to deal with them at all but, my common sense failed me this time.”

Duncan contacted me to ask for help advising our local community to be alert to these unscrupulous operators, as doesn’t want this to happen to anyone else.

This is the flyer these guys as using as promotion, and a picture of one of their Utes, registration number is a Qld one. There is no signage and likely a hired vehicle.

Please be aware of these scammers and, USE YOUR LOCALLY KNOWN AND TRUSTED TRADIES!
