PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, It seems that the second half of the year is upon us already and I hope that everyone has had a healthy and fulfilling 2016 so far. In June, our Best of British celebrations helped to generate significant publicity and funds for our two adopted charities, Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. All in all, we managed to raise $80,000 for these two charities, which would not be possible without the support of all our staff, members and sponsors. On behalf of the Club, I thank you all. Over recent years, probably due to blanket media exposure, everyone has become more aware of food and dining options. We are all now amateur critics and many are online reviewers. It has, in some ways, become a difficult and competitive environment in which the Club must seek to please its members. I believe that a combination of a variety of quality food offerings in differing environments with the personalized service that only a club can offer should have an attraction for everyone and I therefore encourage all members to make good use of our food and beverage outlets. The Club will be having various food and beverage promotions across all outlets during August and September. Entice your taste buds with local delicacies like Tandoori Chicken Fried Rice or Chicken Tikka Pizza at the Verandah Café in August. In September, watch out for various seafood promotions. Enjoy three different kinds of salmon or barramundi, cooked to perfection and served with sides of select vegetables and potatoes at the Mountbatten Room. We have also launched our Tapas Nights at Scores on Friday and Saturday and initial feedback has been very positive. We will be closing the Windsor Arms due to renovation and upgrading works from 18 July to 30 September. The new state of the art kitchen will service the Windsor Arms, our catering capability and act as a central kitchen supporting the other outlets. We are taking the opportunity to upgrade the restrooms and add a facility for the disabled. The details of the interim arrangements in place during the closure can be found on page 13. I am pleased to announce that our newly formed Rugby Section has strong momentum and has opened registration to go on tour to the Bali 10’s Tournament, which takes place from 7 to the 10 October. For those who are keen to try their hand and play some rugby, do not hesitate to contact the sports department or call our reception to enquire. The tour is not compulsory! I wish you all the best. GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, Summer has finally begun. Do take the time and come down to The British Club during this period, as we have some activities planned to tide you through the holidays. This year, through the Best of British celebrations combined with Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday Membership Promotion, I am proud to announce we have over 100 new members joining the Club. On behalf of everyone at The British Club, I would like to cordially welcome you to the best exclusive Club in Singapore. I trust that you will have only the best of times here. In August, we shall be celebrating Singapore’s birthday once again, however this time we’ve decided to get a bit creative about it. Bring your family down to the Verandah Café for a cupcake decorating competition and pit your skills against other families and even our own in-house chefs, and let us usher in Singapore’s 51st Birthday with our creativity, and not to mention cupcakes! Following up with our National Day Celebrations, our monthly Comedy Night at Treetops Lounge for August will be sure to give you all split sides as we host a line-up of comedians to keep your night entertained. Following that, try your hand at cooking at our Adult Cooking Class, with a local twist. Learn from our Club’s chef as he whips up one of Singapore’s all-time favourites, Char Kuay Teow. For the very first time, we will be celebrating the annual Mid-Autumn Festival. Featuring a themed buffet with a wide selection of mooncakes and activities like lantern making and a children’s cooking class, bring your family down and experience a local tradition that has affinity with both the young and old. And a very first from the Club – we will be selling mooncakes! So keep abreast of these special and inaugural offers. For those who still want to sample more of Singapore’s local flavours, join us for the Taste of Singapore event, happening from 7 to 15 October. From an extravagant wine and gourmet dinner to a selection of hawker and nonya cuisine, showcasing why Singapore is well-known for being a melting pot of culture and diversity. Finally we top off the week with a Flavours of the Island themed pool party for the whole family to enjoy. So make a date and head on down to The British Club this summer holidays. We look forward to seeing you soon. SEAN BOYLE General Manager

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan
OUR HOME Singapore’s National Day is Tuesday, 9 August; whether this is our original or adopted home, we are probably preparing for a fun-filled long-weekend. This tropical island, where British East India administrator Sir Stamford Raffles landed in 1819, establishing a trading enclave and free-port, quickly became a hub of British colonial activity. After World War II, Singapore was again under British care. Eventually, Singapore became independent from Malaysia on 9 August 1965, remaining a member of the British Commonwealth. The moniker Lion City comes from Singapura (‘Singa’/’lion’, ‘pura’/’city’ in Sanskrit), as proclaimed by a 13th century Sumatran ruler here. With one of the largest ports worldwide, the thriving city-state Republic with its futuristic buildings and steady economy is a far cry from those early days. Having resided here since 1970, this writer is amazed at the transformation. The population of approximately five-and-a-half million comprises approximately 74% Chinese, 13% Malay, 9% Indian and 3% others. Malay is the national language, with Mandarin, Tamil and English official languages. By joining and appreciating the many festivals celebrated regularly, we are able to enrich our lives in many ways, including through traditional music, art and drama. Having Singapore Botanic Gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a worthy attribute to the ‘Garden City’ pioneers. As we celebrate Singapore’s 51st Anniversary, perhaps while enjoying chicken rice or chilli crab plus Singapore Sling or Tiger beer, let us be thankful for our safe and secure home Photographs, chicken rice Mandarin Orchard Singapore; Raelene Tan.

LEAVING THE UK
– AN EXPATS FINANCIAL CHECKLIST By Martin Rimmer
Moving to Singapore can be exciting but daunting for a British expat. There are several crucial financial matters relating to the move that you should put on your checklist.
Tax You should download Form P85 from the HM Revenue & Customs website and submit it when you know your new address. This is essential housekeeping which starts you off on the right foot as far as your non-resident status and your tax returns are concerned. To be classified as non-resident, you will need to show the following: • Your overseas employment is expected to last for a least one complete UK tax year, or • You have made a decisive ‘lock, stock and barrel’ move away from the UK Once you have started on your period of non-residence, your employment earnings and other non-UK sources of income normally become exempt from UK taxation, unless you work for the British Government.
Pension When you leave the UK you can contribute to your pension fund for a limited period, subject to specific conditions. But you may not be able to enjoy tax relief on contributions at the same level as you could when you were resident. Many expatriates also arrange to make voluntary contributions to National Insurance which can be surprisingly cheap.
Property For expats with a property and a limited time overseas, renting is the most likely option. You will want to apply for entrance into the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, which will prevent your rental agent from withholding Income Tax on the net income they administrate for you. The profit still needs to be reported at the end of the tax year in your annual Income Tax return. If you extend your time in Singapore (many expats do!) you might decide to sell. Three important points to bear in mind: • Non-residents still have to pay Capital Gains Tax on the profits they make from selling UK residential property although if the property was once your Principal Private Residence, you will continue to have a degree of relief. • Whilst non-resident you only pay Capital Gains Tax on the part of the gain which accumulated from 6 April 2015. • If you move back to the UK having completed five complete UK tax years of non-resident status, further Capital Gains Tax may be due in the year you return.
Health insurance Medical costs in Singapore can be high. If your company is providing coverage for you and your family, check the extent of the coverage. If you think you might be traveling between Singapore and the UK a lot, you might want to consider a global policy. Inform your life insurer. Your policy may be rendered void by the move.
Will and power of attorney Get legal advice to confirm your will and any power of attorney you may have are valid in both your home country and in Singapore. Should you and your spouse pass away whilst in Singapore, your children may be placed under the care of the local authorities. These are just some of the key points for you to consider. As an expat in Singapore you can look forward to living in a vibrant multicultural city with a lot to offer. Setting your finances up correctly will help you make the most of it! MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

For this issue of Member In The Spotlight, we are most honoured to feature a member who is also our very own Club President, Damian Hills. Damian has been a member of the Club since 2007 and after a number of years as the men’s tennis convenor he became a member of the Main Committee in 2012, taking the role of Treasurer, and then President in 2015. Damian and his wife, Rhiannon, and their three teenage daughters have lived in Singapore since 2007 after spending the previous fifteen years in Hong Kong. Damian and Rhiannon each own and run businesses. Damian is involved in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, fundraising and investing and Rhiannon’s business imports, distributes and retails luxury European furniture. They have two daughters at UWCSEA and one who has recently graduated from the school and will start at university in October.
1) Our Club abides by the 3 Steps of Service for our Members which are a Warm Welcome, Magic Moment and Fond Farewell. As a Member, can you share your most recent Magic Moment at the Club with us?
As well as the physical facilities and the dining options available at the Club, a key attraction and a strong reason to be a member, is the personalised experience that each member should receive. With over 2000 active members it isn’t always easy for the staff to deliver but I believe they do a great job. Whether it is Vincent welcoming us at the door, the tennis coaches knowing our weaknesses (not strengths) or the understanding shown for my preferences for strong tea and plenty of Mango Chutney with my curries, the personal service is a key ingredient in delivering the magic.
2) What made you join The British Club?
I originally joined the Club as I was looking for a place to play tennis and exercise and also a place for my family to relax and swim. Over the years we have expanded our involvement so that Rhiannon now plays in the ladies tennis leagues and we all regularly dine and host guests at the Club. My involvement in various Club committees has seen my family become more regular attendees at events, which we very much enjoy.
3) What was your first impression of Singapore and do you have any particular favourite place of hangout, other than The British Club?
I first visited Singapore in the early nineties and it has changed enormously over the last twenty-five years. It has always been an ordered, clean and green metropolis but has added a degree of vibrancy over those years. As a result, Singapore is a great place for families, offering something to all generations whilst, generally, doing so in a safe and secure environment. I am not particularly interested by shops, of which there seem to be endless numbers, and prefer to spend time relaxing with my family, playing sport or taking a trip on a boat we share.
4) Could you share with us a glimpse of a day in the life of the President and Brand Ambassador of The British Club?
I consider myself very fortunate in that with my family, the Club, my business and the sporting and social activities that I undertake no two days are the same or predictable, which is something that I really enjoy. Rhiannon and I have three teenage daughters that keep us on our toes and ensure that there are plenty of challenges to face! Weekdays are spent ensuring the kids get to and from school and the various out of school activities that they pursue whilst both Rhiannon and I work in businesses that we own and manage. This can provide great freedoms but also a different set of concerns to those we had when we both were in paid employment.
Outside of work, our weekday life is focused around the Club whether that be playing tennis, swimming, dining or attending events. As a member of the Main Committee I probably spend at least thirty or forty hours a month attending meetings, reviewing and analysing issues and opportunities and working with the management team to move things forward. On top of that, there are many Club or external events to attend although they are often great fun and far from a chore!
5) The Club has undergone a lot of refurbishments and upgrades in the recent years, what more can the Members look forward to in moving forward?
The Main Committee maintains and updates a long term plan that addresses the possible cost and timing of major renovations to all areas of the Club. It is fundamental to ensuring the longevity of the Club that these matters are identified and planned for and that the funding at least meets the need over a full cycle. We don’t have significant financial reserves and this drives a measured and prudent approach to major expenditure. There are a number of projects that will be undertaken in the coming months and the most significant two of these are the complete refurbishment of the kitchen behind the Windsor Arms, which will be enlarged and modernised and become the central kitchen supporting the other kitchens that serve The Mountbatten and The Verandah and the replacement of all of the software that supports the entire operations of the Club. Whilst neither of these projects will have a visual impact they are essential and probably long overdue.

When Terry Peabody arrived home from a four-week business trip in the fall of 1993 his wife Mary, and daughter Mary-Jeanne, cooked him dinner. The meal was long and leisurely, but not without purpose. Terry wasn’t allowed to leave until he had agreed to go into the wine business. The specification was that the business must never be sold. It was to be a family business, an enduring heritage legacy. Terry had always been impressed with the quality of New Zealand wines and he sensed a new and exciting possibility. In New Zealand he saw potential he hadn’t seen elsewhere. The country’s exceptional climate, the youth of the wine industry and the pioneering spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a different path. His ambition was not merely to buy into an existing vineyard or to emulate the greatest examples of wine styles in the world - it was bolder. He wanted to create new benchmarks with wines that would become internationally known as the New World classics. We are happy to have David Peabody, Account Manager of South East Asia of the Craggy Range Estate with us this August to share more with us on the estate and wines. When David first visited Craggy Range at the tender age of 12 and experienced the vineyards and winery first hand, he knew immediately it was something he wanted to be involved in. As the third generation working in the business, David has recently been relocated to Singapore to build on the growing Asian market and will continue to drive the Craggy Range philosophy and brand.

AUSTRALIAN WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 23 September 7.30pm onwards
$98.00+ per Member $108.00+ per Guest The Australian wine industry is the world’s fourth largest exporter of wine with approximately 750 million litres a year to the international export market with only about 40% of production consumed domestically. Wine is produced in every state, with more than 60 designated wine regions totalling approximately 160,000 hectares; however Australia’s wine regions are mainly in the southern, cooler parts of the country, with vineyards located in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland. The wine regions in each of these states produce different wine varieties and styles that take advantage of the particular Terroir such as: climatic differences, topography and soil types. With the major varieties being predominantly Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. We are happy to have Michael Sawyer from Atlas Wine Group to share with us his insight on Australian wines. Michael’s experience of the Old World and New World winemaking techniques have lead him to always strive for perfection in every wine he produces. He believes strongly in blending wines from different soils and climates as each contributes its own character to the blend. Michael quietly through his intuition and training goes about improving wines each vintage from the vineyard through to the bottle. Michael receives a host of accolades, winning a number of silver and bronze medals at the International Wine Challenge in 2007, 2008 and 2009. These awards were recently highlighted by James Halliday commending Michael on his experience, skill and winemaking talents in the annual Wine Companion.

The Ardmore Port Wood Finish is a unique and premium expression. This liquid is double cask matured in American white oak barrels and European port casks to create an extraordinary, ruby gold single malt full of spiced fruits with a subtle smoky finish. Non-chill filtered and aged for 12 years, this extraordinary single malt has been made using the same traditional distilling methods for 100 years. Colour – Ruby Gold Nose – Initial nose of strawberries and summer fruits with a hint of pepper. Notes of burnt orange and cinnamon spice underlie. With water, the rich fruit aromas of red apple and cranberry intensify, accompanied by sweet honey and subtle spiced wood notes. Palate – Sweet red apple and honey with the subtlest hint of charcoal smoke. Finish – Initially smooth with a long, lingering finish culminating in the trademark Ardmore dryness.

MID–SEASON REPORT - 2016 By Gaurav Lakhanpal Season stats for 2016: Batting Honours: Todd Buck – 262 Ross Marsh – 199 David Bennett – 180 Shane Sampson – 148 Roger Kelly – 116
Bowling Honours: David Bennett – 14 Paul McNee – 11 Paul Twine – 09 Shane Sampson - 07 Simon Atkins - 05
2016 is by far the busiest season for The British Club cricket section, having played the most number of games this year than in the earlier seasons. We have already played 15 games and have only reached the halfway mark. We will play 17 games before the summer break and our winloss ratio so far has been 6 wins, 1 tie, and 1 washout out of 15 games. The team is gelling well recently with 4 wins on a trot until Anza halted our stride last weekend. The British Club played some of its best cricket in these 4 wins, with a thrilling win against Misfits beating them by 4 runs. BC batted first and scored 168 for 6. On a high from the previous game, we chose to bat first against the usual strategy of chasing this time against UWC, putting up a score of 170, making a slow start with top order failing but Todd Buck came to the rescue by scoring 43 runs and with some steady bowling we beat UWC by 19 runs.
You drive, we care
Then came our best game for the season so far against the non-benders, beating them by 100 runs. This wasn’t a high scoring game though, we once again chose to bat first on a rainy outfield and the top order failed once again, making the middle order come to the rescue with Captain Shane Sampson scoring 27, David Bennett 20 and reliable Todd Buck scoring 30, with a total score of 158 for 6. Bowling in this game was outstanding and non-benders were bowled out for 58 in-runs. We played Cargill next and with no surprises we batted first once again. This time the outfield was even more sluggish and Cargill who we were playing for the D’Souza trophy was on a roll, having won the first game of 3 earlier in the year. We started slow and watchful with top order this time determined not to fail and Captain Shane got 30 with Gaurav Lakhanpal scoring 24, Paul Twine 22 and you can’t keep Todd out of the game this year as he scored a steady 23 to take The British Club to 136 for 5. Bowling once again shined with Rohit taking 4, Paul and Brett taking 2 each and we beat Cargill by 11 runs to tie the series 1 all with the 3rd game for the trophy to be played later in the year.

SPORTS & FITNESS GOLF:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith NEWS FROM THE GREENS We have suffered from ‘fixture overload’ in recent weeks resulting in a rather thin turnout on the greens. This led to a review of the remaining fixtures and I’m pleased to announce that our September Stableford will now be played on tour at the Bali National Golf Club on Saturday 1st October. We will also have a match at the New Kuta Golf Club against Raffles Golf Club at Bali and slot in a social game with our touring soccer lads at the sumptuous Nirwana Golf Course overlooking Tanah Lot. We leave on Thursday 29 September, returning to Singapore on 2 October. If you can’t find your way to Bali, sign up for the Ryder Cup match on 16 September, when we host the American Club at Tanah Merah Country Club. And if you still need convincing to get out the clubs, we have already booked Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course for the Club Championship on 20 October. World class courses, challenging formats and great company; so join us.
That sinking feeling! Handing over the Colonial Cup to Tanglin Club at Scores
Bali beckons! 29 September to 2 October; Nirwana Bali Golf Club.
The highlight of our recent Club outings was our team performance at the Tanah Merah Garden Course, where we narrowly lost the Colonial Cup to the Tanglin Club. We were rewarded for our choice of afternoon tee after it poured down the entire morning. We went on to win three matches, draw one and lose two. Paul Nikkel of The British Club won the longest drive, whilst Tanglin Club members Jurgen Martiens and Raymond Tan took the nearest the pin prizes. Teams joined us for drinks and dinner at Scores where we reluctantly handed over the crystal trophy we fought so hard for last year. With our team still shell-shocked from the loss to Tanglin, we were unable to put out a side for the 2nd leg of the Inter Social Club Golf Tournament (ISCGT.) Thankfully we do have a chance to redeem ourselves on 19 August at Orchid Country Club, so please join us for the 3rd and final leg.
We stumbled to the end of the recent Men’s Monday Night Golf League and must regroup. We are recruiting for the new league which kicks off on 22 August at Orchid Country Club. If you’ve never experienced the wonders of night golf, now is your chance. The only qualification required is enthusiasm and balls that glow in the dark!
MAY & JUNE STABLEFORD REPORTS The May Stableford was played at SICC’s Sime Course. We were grateful for a dry afternoon which saw eight of us take to the greens. We witnessed our second eagle of 2016 as Nic Merrow-Smith took advantage of some straight driving to muscle a fairway wood to the heart of the par 5 14th and sink the putt for an eagle 3. Nic went on to win the Stableford with Davy Yeo taking the runner-up spot. Nearest the Pin winners were Greg Atack and Kenny Cowgill. Fast forward to our June Stableford where a small group took the ferry to Nongsa and Tering Bay Golf & Country Club. In a game that bristled with birdies, David Christie and Paul Nikkel jostled for honours. The venerable Dr. Christie sank two birdies and finished with three straight bogeys to steal the win by the narrowest margin from Paul, who earlier claimed birdies on the 8th, 12th and 14th. Nearest the Pin prizes were secured by Andrew Bond-Webster and Paul Nikkel.
Chris Taylor gets us underway at the Par 3 1st, SICC Sime Course.

TENNIS OLYMPIC FACTS… DID YOU KNOW….? • Tennis was first played at the Olympics in 1896. • In 1912 the Olympic tennis and Wimbledon tennis events were on at the same time. All the good players chose to play at Wimbledon. • In 1924 there was a messy split between the Olympic committee and the tennis federation as they could not agree on whether professional players could play in the Olympics. • Tennis resumed at the Olympics in 1988. • The most successful all time performances at the Olympics has been from the William sisters who have each won 4 gold medals! • Mixed doubles was played at the London 2012 Olympics for the first time since 1924.

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:
SWIMMING SECTION REPORT By Helen Tynan
A warm welcome back to all our swimmers after the long summer break. A lot has happened before the summer, our head coach Roland Sarmiento left to go and work in New Zealand. Roland was with us for over 3 years and built up a fantastic squad of swimmers and a great team presence. We welcomed Coach Enrico who joined the Total Swimming team in June and is working with Coach Dawn on our Pre-Squad, Squad and Masters swimmers. We also held our yearly British Club Gala and our Barracudas end of season movie night in June. The British Club Gala, held on 12 June, was well attended with over 90 contestants and 8 parent and child relay heats. We had children from 4 years old to swimmers in their 50’s competing, which was great to see. I think it was fair to say that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning and there were lots of happy faces during the medal ceremony. The Barracudas movie night on 17 June fell foul to bad weather. Our plan to have a blow up movie screen by the pool was hampered by a very rainy afternoon, so in the end the event was held in the Tree Tops function room instead. We still had a great team turn out despite the weather and watched ‘Freaky Friday the movie’. We said goodbye to a number of Barracudas this summer who have left to pastures new. The Din Family, Aryaan and Kamran, had been with the Barracudas for a number of years. They represented The British Club at many swim meets and will be greatly missed. The Peterson’s, Brandon and Hailey, were dedicated to the Barracudas and achieved great personal bests during their time with us. We wish them all the very best in their new adventures. For those adventurous swimmers amongst you, look out for further details in the next few months about a sea swim around the Gili islands, not for the faint hearted that’s for sure. If you do fancy joining us or wish to know more, please email swimming@britishclub.org.sg. Good luck to everyone in the upcoming Neptune and Merlion swim meets and we look forward to seeing everyone by the pool in the coming weeks.

SQUASH:
THAT FAMILIAR FEELING By The Boaster
War of the Roses 2016
In May and June the squash section hosted our annual “War of the Roses” against the Tanglin Club, reached the climax of the Singapore SRA interclub league and staged the Club’s Open knock-out tournament. Somehow, it all ended in a familiar way. In the War of the Roses – one of three annual social fixtures with the big expat clubs we fielded a team of 15 led by Liam Douglas. All four courts were in constant use all afternoon and the pressure built steadily until the match was standing at 6-6 with the last three rubbers underway. The boys from The British Club rose to the challenge, won all three games and we took the fixture 9-6. The win against Tanglin may not have been familiar – the War of the Roses has previously left us grasping the thorns while TC got the flowers – but the party afterwards certainly was. Win or lose, these fixtures are always very social. The familiar hangover after that event was matched by a metaphorical one after the SSRA. Once again we were the ‘nearlymen’ of the league. Jim Mitchell’s team scored some great results over the season but not quite enough and despite a thrashing of the Singapore Swimming Club in our last match we finished 5th in the table, just outside the play-off placings. There’s always next year (as we say every year). Finally on to the Club’s open tournament. Diligently organized as always by Andrew Vine, the finals had a sense of déjà vu. In the plate, Martin Huxley (who had won the handicap plate earlier in the year) was in another final, this time against Ben Kiggell, while the cup final was Charlie Thomas (again) versus Ben Carpenter. There was no joy for the Bens as Martin won the first match 3-0 (two of the three games going to tie-breakers) and Charlie stepped up his level after losing the first to take the title 3-1 and restore the cup to its familiar position on his mantelpiece. Well played to all the winners. The Cosmo League is next up and this time things will be different as we are determined to win our first title in 20 years.

A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN DU R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MB range is built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the watches are strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. But this doesn’t mean the MB is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer certified 99.998% accurate by COSC.
