President’sMessage
Dear Members,
It’s hard to believe that we are already approaching the 41st Annual General Meeting of the Club as you receive this magazine, time truly flies. This will be my final President’s update as I stand down as President at the end of my 3-year term. Throughout the year, the Club has witnessed numerous improvements, including the transformation of The Hideaway, the swimming pool changing rooms, and other developments such as upgrades to air conditioning and Wi-Fi speed. Most importantly, we have transitioned our entire management system to a new software system to enhance the overall membership experience. I sincerely hope that you are satisfied with the Club’s decisions and that you continue to enjoy your membership here at the British Club.
On a lighter note, the festive season is upon us, and it is the time where we look forward to spending quality moments with the family, whether on vacation or by participating in various social events at the Club. Some of the exciting festive gatherings coming up would be the Christmas Party and the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, which I look forward to as they definitely put me in the festive mood.
I would also like to highlight an inspiring article in this magazine issue, which is all about Vincent, a dedicated staff member who has been serving the Club since 1988! Many of our members have fond memories of him welcoming them since their first day at the Club, and he has even witnessed their children growing up. Employees like Vincent are truly exceptional, and I encourage you to extend your warmest congratulations to him the next time you see him.
If you are seeking to learn a new sport this holiday season, I strongly encourage you to express your interest in starting a Netball Section at the Club. There's already been notable interest, and it promises to be a fascinating opportunity for our members to come together. Flip to page 16 to find out more.
I look forward to meeting you at the Annual General Meeting, and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Dear Members,
For all those who attended the recent Halloween and Guy Fawkes event, I hope you had a great time and enjoyed the spectacular fireworks display. It brings me great joy to witness the dedication and creativity put into your costumes and I hope that this spirit of enthusiasm continues in the years to come. Congratulations to this year’s best dressed winners.
I hope to see you at the 41st Annual General Meeting, which is being held on Thursday, 23 November 2023 where we will be presenting the Club’s last financial year results. Participate in auction and raffle prize draws and get ready to savour a delightful 3-course dinner accompanied by festive school choirs and non-stop entertainment throughout the night!

Last but not least, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Main Committee and Sub-Committee members for their dedication throughout FY2022/23. Members’ Connect Night
Thursday, 5 October
The quarterly Member’s Connect Night is all about extending a heartfelt welcome to our new members and giving them a sense of belonging within the British Club family. Held in the Treetops Suite accompanied by live music and Singaporean dishes like satay and crispy spring rolls, this event also provided members a chance to discover more about the Club’s diverse sports and social sections.
The Club President, Stephen Fulton, and the Club General Manager, Andrew Christon, took the opportunity to introduce members to the different sub-committees and management teams. It was a very successful night, and we hope that members managed to make meaningful connections with one another!
We would also like to thank our partner, The Fry Group, for their generous sponsorship of the event.

Our family movie night was a resounding success! As the movie played on the screen at the Elizabeth Suite, we couldn't help but notice the children's joyful faces, immersed in the film, and enjoying the popcorn and candy floss. It was a heartwarming evening, filled with the simple joys of spending quality time with our loved ones.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
What made you join the British Club?
We joined in October of 2020, in the midst of Covid. We were constantly looking for places we could take our son to during the safe-distancing measures period, which proved to be challenging. Joining the British Club was a way of settling on a routine for us and to be in a safe space where we could enjoy a meal, while our son enjoys the playroom and other facilities.
Member in the Spotlight is a section in the magazine where members introduce themselves and share how they spend their time at the Club. In this edition, we have the pleasure of introducing Desmond Tan and his family, who joined our Club in 2020 amidst the challenges of the pandemic. Discover Desmond's favourite dishes, hobbies, and more as he shares his unique Club journey with us.
Share with us a little about your family and yourself.
We are a small family of three, all Singaporeans. I was based in Hong Kong for eight years, and my wife Daphne and I got married before my work then took me back home to Singapore a couple of years later. We have been here ever since. A few years later, we welcomed our son, Daemon, who will be starting primary school next year.
What is your favourite thing to do at the Club?
We enjoy our Saturday evenings at the Verandah Café, and sometimes Windsor Arms. Sipping beers or wines in between meals while Daemon enjoys the activities in the Hangout has become a relaxing pastime for our family.
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
I really loved the Mee Goreng at Verandah Café and Buffalo Wings at Windsor Arms but unfortunately, both have been taken off the menus! If I had to choose only one dish, then it would have to be the Hokkien Mee at either restaurants. If you allow me to choose another dish, I would say the Nasi Goreng from Verandah Café, as it has everything I need on a plate!
What are your and your family's favourite festive activities to do at the Club to get you in the spirit of Christmas? For example, attending our tree lighting ceremony, having lunch, making wreaths, or joining our Christmas party!
There’s something nostalgic about Christmas in the English tradition that warms the heart, from the simple colours and decorations to the Christmas tree that greets us as we walk in. Our son enjoys picking out lovely handmade Christmas tree decorations, which are being sold for charity. Our guests are always just as charmed as us to gather at the Club during the festive season. We usually have a few sessions between family and friends, and they all love it as much as we do. I’m sure it will continue to be a tradition we hope to keep in the years to come.
Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.
Eons ago, I had a tennis scholarship in the US and played college tennis for four years. Given that tennis is a big part of my life, we joined the Club so I could participate more in the tennis community here. However, my body doesn't always obey me, and I've had to time my sessions very carefully! I always enjoy a good hit with my new friends at the Club either on Mondays, Fridays, or Sundays!
MY LOVE FOR NETBALL
with Lisa Thanh, Member of the Club since October 2020
Hello Members! My name is Lisa, and my family and I have been in Singapore for three years now, having moved from Hong Kong. I have two girls, 8 and 5 years old, who are active members of the Club. We became members the moment we arrived in Singapore when there were still COVID restrictions, and it was a lifesaver decision in every way!
One of my favourite activities to do at the Club is to play tennis, but it's not just the sport itself that brings me joy; it’s the welcoming community of people that come along with it. Thus, my strong bonds with my tennis friends and my love for the sport have inspired me to try and start a new sports section at the Club, Netball! I’m sure the same bond will grow within the sport.
I played netball all through primary and high school, and later as an adult in Hong Kong for 2.5 years with a Club. This sport is about fast decision-making, working together as a team with one goal in mind. It is highly social, and the sport allows you to really stretch your limits as there are so many different positions available for you to take the sport as far as you want it to for yourself.
Netball will be a new sport to the Club and our hope is that, with a fun and energetic reach, we can garner lots of interest and expand the sport. The great thing about netball is that it is inclusive and fun, so we are hoping to form teams for kids, ladies, and mixed groups! We currently have an agreement in place with the Singapore Korean School where we will have access to an indoor netball court every Saturday, from 1:30pm to 5:30pm.
This sport is about fast decision-making, working together as a team with one goal in mind.
Netball is a sport that you can grow up with as much as you’d like it to! From playing as a child where you learn about teamwork to participating in competitions as an adult, it becomes a test of your fitness levels. Try it out! It’s a sport for suitable all ages, it may be a laugh to begin with but at least it’s with your team.
We hope to see you all around the court and please do not hesitate to reach out to the Sports and Recreation team at sports@britishclub.org.sg if you are interested. We’d love to have you!

A LEGACY OF DEDICATION
Vincent’s 35 Years (and counting!) of Service at the Club
Whether you are a new or long-standing member of the Club, chances are you've crossed paths with Vincent, a dedicated staff member who has been part of our Club's journey since July 4, 1988. Vincent has contributed to the Club for over three decades and played a significant role in the Club's evolving history. He has even had the privilege of seeing some of our members' children grow up!
The British Club commenced in the year 1986, making Vincent one of its early pioneers. While you may recognize him as the friendly face behind the reception desk, when he initially joined the Club, he served as a waiter at Windsor Arms. Read on to find out more about Vincent!
While reminiscing about his time as a waiter, Vincent fondly recalled serving scones and tea cakes at the former Windsor Arms. When questioned about the source of his dedication to his job, Vincent attributed it to his passion for his work. He takes pride in recognizing every member, and highly values the mutual respect and support he receives from both his colleagues and the members, emphasising how these strong bonds foster a warm and welcoming community.
Vincent happily shared that during one of the Annual Dinner and Dance, he let loose and showed off his dancing skills. As he recalled the moment, he said, “I must admit I'm a pretty good dancer, and the atmosphere that night was fantastic. When a song I loved came on and matched my moves, I couldn't resist hitting the dance floor. Everyone’s applause took me by surprise, it was a very fun moment that I'll always remember.”
Vincent also mentioned that he is genuinely grateful for the support he has received from his superiors, the General Manager, committee members, and his wonderful colleagues. The good relationships and teamwork at the Club has made his experience much better. Moreover, his outstanding dedication was officially recognised in 2017 when he was honoured with the Distinguished Service Award, a testament to his commitment to fostering a warm and inclusive community at the Club.
"The Club is my second home," he said. "I've made so many friends here over the years. It makes me happy to be a part of this wonderful community."
May we all draw inspiration from his unwavering commitment to transforming the Club into a home away from home. Here's to creating more wonderful memories and enjoying his warm hospitality. Cheers to you, Vincent!

EARTHSHOT LANDS SINGAPORE NOVEMBER
member of the Club since December, 2004
!
environmental innovations that will repair and regenerate our planet.
Over the course of this critical decade, five winners each year, with the best chance of helping to achieve the Earthshots will be awarded £1 million each to scale their solutions, with all 15 Finalists receiving support from a global alliance of partners supporting the awards.
The Club management has taken several initiatives to support the five Earthshots. There is a greater emphasis on using digital tools to reduce paper usage, thereby supporting the preservation of trees. The paper we use is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, to ensure support for sustainable practices. The management is looking at ways to restore and maintain green areas within the Club. The Club has introduced a comprehensive waste management policy which has been integrated into all aspects of the Club’s activities. Some of the examples include recycling used cooking oil, glass bottles, cans, tennis balls etc. To encourage member participation, the Club has also been supporting reuse campaigns for clothes, books, old furniture and more. To support the sustainable life of oceans, the Club procures a high proportion of seafood products certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. There is a conscious effort to procure local or nearby produce to reduce the carbon footprint from goods procured. The management has also taken measures to increase energy and water efficiency at the Club.
This year, an exciting event is on the horizon as Singapore prepares to host the prestigious Earthshot Awards. The awards ceremony, personally presented by Prince William, is scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2023. To learn more about the Earthshot Award and its incredible mission, we invite you to explore this enlightening article available at http://earthshotprize.org.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable initiative that seeks to change the world for the better.

The lovely finish is long, crisp, and delicate.

Grape Varietals: 100% Shiraz
$38.50 per bottle
Deep ruby red in colour. This Shiraz offers rich, concentrated red and blue fruits, dark chocolate, and mocha notes with hints of spice and cedar. Generous berry fruit flavours, good structure, a rounded mouthfeel and great length of flavour.

6) Chateau Taussin 2020, Bordeaux, France
Grape Varietals: Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon
$32 per bottle
Ruby-red colour. Red fruit and berries come together to create the freshness of its flavour. The first impression in the mouth is a strong fruity flavour with cherry notes typical of Merlot, which give way to smooth tannins enveloped in its long finish.

FOOTBALL
The Start of the Season and Ho
By Paul Davies, Member of the Club since February 1999
Chi Minh Tour
We are three games into the new football season – sorry to disappoint any readers, but I am referring to the Singapore Equatorial football leagues in which the British Club Football Section teams participate every Saturday – I am happy to report we are very competitive.
For the two leagues - The Equatorial Qualifying Division 1 (an open age league) and the Equatorial Football League SuperVets (over 45’s league) - it looks like we are positioned well for the ongoing campaign which ends around late March/early April 2024.
On Friday, 6 October, we will depart for our second tour of the year to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam and it looks like this will turn out to be quite special as we have brand 333 (a very popular local beer brand) helping to support and organise the tour in combination with the Vietnam Football Federation. We will play a round robin format 7-a-side tournament on Friday, a 11-a-side match with a local team on Saturday, golf session on Friday morning as well as dinners and other extracurricular activities.
In addition to the core 11-a-side game, we also play mid-week friendlies and 5-a-side games to keep fit and provide a game time opportunity for those who may not have had a chance to play on Saturdays.
For those new to the Football Section of the British Club, we have run a thriving section across all age groups of 16 to 67+, playing 5, 7, and 11-a-side football on a regular weekly basis for close to 20 years.

Golf Activities
By Nicholas Merrow Smith, Member of the Club since December 2006
The Club Championship was played on Thursday, 21 September at the Tampines Course, Tanah Merah Country Club. We were truly blessed with fantastic weather. Cool, nice breeze and a lovely rainbow. This was our first time holding our Club Championship at Tanah Merah and for most, the first time playing there since a substantial renovation in 2019.
As a championship course, it didn’t disappoint. One of our competitors remarked that “It was brutal out there.” This was hardly surprising as we were treated to tour conditions, being the last group to play on the course before it plays host in early October to The International Series 2023 and The Asian Tour.
We continue to attract members and guests to our events with 32 golfers participating, including a sponsor’s flight from Champions Golf. A field of 21 British Club golfers competed for the honour of Club Champion. Difficult scoring conditions perpetuated by firm greens and the challenging course layout, resulted in fairly high scores. Emerging as the Club Champion was Jay Jhaveri, who carded a gross 85. Congratulations Jay. For the second year in succession, we introduced a Senior Gross prize for golfers 55 and above. Nic Merrow-Smith took the honours with a gross 93.
Other awards included the winner and runner-up in two handicap divisions, prizes for nearest the pin and longest drive. The Ladies Championship was not contested this year.
Here are details of all our winners:
Men’s Championship
Club Champion Jay Jhaveri Gross 85
Senior Champion Nicholas Merrow-Smith Gross 93
Handicap Divisions
Division A Winner Andy Romanis Nett 77
Division A Runner-Up Gary Smithson Nett 77
Division B Winner Matthew Bowler Nett 72
Division B Runner-Up Miles Peckham-Cooper Nett 76
Novelty Prizes
Nearest The Pin Hole 4 Dave Reynolds
Nearest The Pin Hole 6 Jay Jhaveri
Nearest The Pin Hole 14 Adam Wright
Nearest The Pin Hole 16 Nick Cross 2.24m
Longest Drive Hole 12 Matthew Hulen
The Golf Section sponsored prizes including $750 worth of Pro Shop vouchers, Titleist golf balls and Tanah Merah Country Club merchandise whilst green fee vouchers were sponsored by Champions Golf. All were presented at Tanah Merah Country Club during a well-deserved lunch of Tiger and chicken rice.
Many thanks to all competitors, players, our committee and sports office staff for making it a truly memorable day. A special thanks goes out to Matthew Murray of Champions Golf for their participation and generous prize support.
SQUASH Travelling to the Cosmos (and maybe beyond)
By The Boaster, Member of the
Club since April 2007
Readers may recall from an earlier edition that we wrote about this year’s COSMO Interclub Squash League, to be hosted and managed by the British Club and sponsored by our friends at City Index. As we have been in the past, we were filled with optimism, confident that our deep and talented squad would do well.
Normally an optimistic article like that is followed a couple of months later by news of close defeats, missed opportunities and a league position close to the bottom. Last year, we started off brilliantly, only to fade in the second half and be pushed down to second place. A good result in hindsight, but not what we had dreamed of.
But THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT. The Boaster is sure of it. As he writes, The British Club has won all 6 from 6 matches and are well clear at the top of the table halfway through the event. Co-captain Oliver Hopkins has been unstoppable with four match wins, and David Barkess has done the same (with more to come we feel) but there have been contributions from up and down the squad list.
If you find yourself at the Club on a Monday night, please do come and support Team BC as we play through the second half of the league and claim our first title for 20+ years.
The section is busy on multiple fronts, as always. The box leagues are underway again, we have just played one of our monthly handicap round-robin competitions with Liam Douglas claiming the title, pipping frequent finalist Jamie Salamon in the final.
The handicap knock-out tournament is beginning with the mere mortals who make up most of the section having a crack at the star players with the help of a juicy head start. In the next edition, you’ll learn whether anyone has succeeded.
Being the star of Cosmo may only be the second best thing Oliver Hopkins has done recently. The section sends love and congratulations to both he and Ann who are celebrating the arrival of their first child – well done and good luck to all three of you.

TENNIS Ladies Tennis Anyone?
By Emma Pike Member of the Club since June, 2017
There are two seasons of WITS each year, and this season is nearly over. We had seven teams enter, with over 20 new ladies joining our competition teams. So, if you are a female tennis player and can play in the mornings, we’d love to hear from you for the next season’s teams. Next season will start at the end of January or in early February. However, we need to get teams ready in December so you may email tennis@britishclub.org.sg if you’re interested.
Junior Social
By Kate Burton Member of the Club since June, 2016
We had over 35 juniors come out on a Friday night in September to play some fun games on the courts with the coaches until some rain turned tennis into a dance competition upstairs.
The kids had fun getting Lema and some of the parents up dancing and winning prizes for their efforts, while the adults enjoyed some much-needed refreshments and mingling.
The tennis section’s Junior Social Programme is a great way to get the kids involved in tennis, from lessons and socials to box matches. We launched our Junior Boxes in October to promote friendly competition within the section. If you have a junior player that is keen and would like to get them involved, you may email sports@britishclub.org.sg for more details.
STA competition teams
By Hugh Spencer Member of the Club
since June, 2015
The doubles season for Singapore Tennis Association is upon us, and the British Club has once again entered several teams to sacrifice through blood, sweat and tears on the simmering courts island wide.
Wander past the courts on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, and you may see a battle involving our Mens B, Mens C or Mens D teams in progress. Sadly, due to untimely injuries amongst our elite Women’s A team, they were unable to participate this time around, but fear not, they shall return next season, better than ever. This season has gotten off to a successful start for our Mens B and Mens C teams, chalking up wins against old time foes, the Cricket and American Club, respectively. The Men’s D team has yet to scratch out a win yet, however, optimism remains high. Another highlight is section members approaching the committee after seeing teams in action with a desire to play. We cannot encourage this enough, please feel free to reach out to me (Hugh Spencer) directly or the committee at tennis@britishclub.org.sg.

PADEL Section News
By
Kiggell,
...Padel is social, fun and requires a sensible rehydration regime...
After short gestation and a relatively quick, painless birth, Padel at the British Club is now just over six months old. Unlike many infants of a similar age, this sports section newbie has progressed past crawling and drooling. It is now up on two feet, running around, has a voice and is continuing its rapid growth path over the 95th centile.
Our section now has more than 40 members, including nine husband and wife combinations, plus some entire families. The cross gender, cross age group appeal is one of the reasons that Channel News Asia in a recent article described Padel as ‘the fastest growing sport globally’. It is easy to pick up, hard to master and ridiculously addictive. Indeed, at the time of writing, six of the F1 racing drivers have been spotted playing Padel at Marina Square. Truly a sport for all.
This broad interest is the reason why Padel courts are popping up all over Singapore as more people discover the game. The extra court capacity is very helpful as we are still in a situation where we need to book external venues to satisfy the demand of BC members. The aim remains to have Padel courts here at the British Club. This is a big undertaking, but we continue to have positive discussions, so thank you to all who have helped in this regard.
In the short term, the aim of our section is to continue to grow, establish section ‘rodeo’ competitions as well as inter club matches. Plus, of course, continuing to develop our social games on Tuesday evenings. As you can see from the pictures, Padel is social, fun and requires a sensible rehydration regime… do join us.
RUGBY WORLD CUP 2023 INSIGHTS
By Neil Best, Member of the Club since June, 2015
No doubt BC members have enjoyed albeit at the expense of having to either get up early or remain awake for the recent Rugby World Cup (RWC) in France. At the time of writing, only the second round of matches has been played, and by the time the BC magazine is published, the winners and losers will be known.
That being said, and I hope this statement ages well, congratulations to Les Bleus.
But now that the World Cup is over, what remains when will the team and players return?
Well, a few options are on the cards, depending on how the tournament went for you as an individual and as a team. Let’s consider these options.
1. A fringe player who, through fortuity, ended up playing a critical role and accounted for himself very well.
2. A team which had a poor campaign and didn’t fulfill their potential.
In the case of option one, this is certainly a great position to be in. Considering the timeline remaining on your contract, a renegotiation with your current club, or ending your contract by mutual agreement and looking for an uplift elsewhere could be on the cards.
Unlike in soccer, clubs typically don’t buy players out of their contract and sign them, some compensation has been given in the past, but a player would have to be quite special. So, in all likelihood, your agent would seek to start negotiations with your current club upon your return. Given that the RWC has made your stock rise, this can be mutually beneficial for both.
In the case of option 2, no doubt, a third-party review would be undertaken by some management consultant. What does this look like? Well, I’ve had some experience of this following Irelands disastrous RWC campaign in France in 2007.
It involves multiple hour-long interviews which were advised as confidential with a panel of ‘experts’.
In essence, it’s a grilling session, and you are under the spotlight to assist with identifying the key failings of the Team Management and the lead-up to the RWC strategy. Basically, it’s a finger-pointing exercise in which you had the option of throwing people under the bus. Thankfully, and given I played a minuscule part in the RWC 2007, not much was said from my part, only that I couldn’t understand whose idea it was to play a French club team (Bayonne) prior to the RWC. Still, I haven’t had this question answered. Let’s hope the home nations account well for themselves so that any review can be avoided.
On to Rugby section matters: The section has capacity for more participants. So much so that, due to a lack of numbers, we have teamed up with members of the local Singapore rugby fraternity (Gaulois XV) and joined them for touch sessions at Turf City.
Again, as always, we would love to have more members come and give it a go.
We reiterate that the section is for all levels, so please contact the pro shop and ask to be added to the WhatsApp group.
