President’s

Message

Dear Members,

I would like to thank all of you who took the time to complete our member survey. This is an important reference for the Management team and Main Committee to understand how we can look to improve and further meet your expectations as this does guide the way we shape the Club's future. The responses are currently being analysed, so please do look out for the results in the next issue.

As we approach the summer holidays, I understand many of you are preparing to leave Singapore or have already embarked on your travels. For those of you spending part of your summer here, we invite you to come and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the Club.

Last month, we celebrated the King's birthday with a memorable pool party, and I trust you all had a wonderful time. The Club takes great pride in hosting exclusive events for our members, so if you know anyone who enjoys having a good time, we encourage you to book a tour for them to experience our vibrant community!

In this magazine issue we feature upcoming events like Singapore’s National Day celebration, family-friendly activities such as kite-making workshop, movie night, and more. For those seeking a refined evening out, don't miss our whisky, wine, and rum degustation dinners at Mountbatten, perfect for an adult night out.

Looking ahead, our events committee is excited to present a retro groove party this September, a perfect occasion for music lovers to revel in the sounds of the past. While July tends to be a quieter month, we anticipate your return in August, bringing with it a calendar full of exciting events. Wishing you and your families a wonderful summer ahead, and I look forward to seeing you back at the Club soon.

Dear Members,

Following on from my last e-newsletter update in May, I explained that the Club has decided to partner with two new agencies for part-time service staff, so far, the new team have been settling into their roles well and I have been receiving positive feedback from Members, thank you for your patience during their training period.

I am also pleased to inform you that our dining outlets remain fully operational during the summer months, serving up the best dishes from Chef Sunny and his team. Although I’m sure you already have your favourite dishes, I encourage you to explore the top picks from each dining outlet, which can be found on page 22.

As you walk around the Main Clubhouse, you may have noticed our very own "Hall of Fame". Turn to page 8 to discover which iconic celebrities have visited the Club over the years. I was pleased to receive my annual rejection letter from Dame Joanna Lumley who will sadly be unable to join us for the British Club Charity Ball this year due to filming commitments. However, she passed on her best wishes to Members and thanked the Club for 20 years of support towards to the Gurkha Welfare Trust charity of which she is Patron.

With only a few tables left for our end of year Charity Ball, please book your table now and experience our biggest member event of the year. Not only will you be treated to a Champagne reception, but we have some wonderful prizes that have been donated for the charity raffle and auction – its going to be the highlight event of the year!

I hope you have a fantastic summer ahead.

Members’ Connect Night

Thursday, 25 April

The last Members’ Connect Night was a little different as it was ANZAC-themed, featuring a spread of ANZAC biscuits, Lamingtons, Democracy Sausages, and more. We had the pleasure of welcoming our new members, and the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore, H.E. Senarath Dissanayake.

Joining us on the same night was our charity organisations, The Gurkha Welfare Trust and the RDA - Riding for the Disabled Singapore. On behalf of the Club, the Main Committee and the Craft Section presented both cheques worth $33,000 to each charity, a total amount raised through Christmas stars, Bingo Nights, Quiz Night, Charity Craft sales and other initiatives.

A big thank you to our partner, Progeny, for bringing this event to life!

Celebrating King Charles III’s Birthday with a BBQ Pool Party!

Saturday, 15 June

No British celebration is complete without its iconic dishes, and Chef Sunny and his team did not disappoint! Highlights of the King’s Birthday Celebration included classic British favourites like Cornish Beef Pasties, Fish & Chips, and a Porchetta Station. The festivities were completed with lively music, vibrant pool floats and exciting pool side activities like glitter tattoo and balloon sculpting for the kids!

We'd love to hear your ideas for our next pool party! Share your suggestions with our events team at events@britishclub.org.sg .

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

In this issue's Member Spotlight, we shine a light on Adam Bozeman and his wife, Eileen. While Adam and his family are relatively new to the Club, you might have spotted them at family events, by the poolside, on the tennis courts, or at the Hangout. Keep reading to discover more about their story!

Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club. There are so many to choose from… Little Chef is a favourite for the kids and the many Christmas and Lunar New Year events are wonderful. The Harvard Krokodiloes a cappella concert last year was really fun, and we hope they come back again!

What made you join the British Club?

We are a family of four - myself, my wife Eileen, and our two sons, Nick (8) and Nolan (5). We moved to Singapore at the end of 2022 and enrolled the boys at Chatsworth School. Eileen and I both work from home, so we were very happy to find The British Club right next to the boys’ school; it’s the perfect place to work during the days and let Nick and Nolan play sports and hang out with friends after school.

Let’s dive into family fun! Share with us a little about you and your family

I am originally from Chicago and Eileen hails from near Shanghai. We met as classmates during graduate school in Nanjing, lived in the US for a few years, and later moved to Shanghai where Nick and Nolan were born. We lived there for seven years before moving to Singapore.

What is you and your children’s go-to activity at the Club?

Recently it’s been foosball in The Hangout, where I’m barely maintaining a winning record against the team of Nick and Nolan. There are so many things we love doing at the Club; family squash games, swim, tennis, hip hop dance lessons, and on school days, Eileen and I enjoy having a coffee and working in the tranquillity of The Hideaway.

If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?

For Eileen it’s the Design-Your-Own Salads at Scores, and for me the Curry Buffet at Verandah Café on the weekends. Nick and Nolan will eat anything that is put in front of them and then ask for more, so we’ve been grateful for the extended Kids Eat Free promotion at Verandah this spring. Wherever we eat, the meals are always made wonderful thanks to the amazing staff at all the restaurants.

Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself. I am an avid golfer and used to work in the golf course development industry in Asia. I finally have signed up for the golf section and look forward to teeing it up soon with fellow golfers.

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

TELL ME WHAT YOU EAT AND

I

WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU ARE

said Jean Anthelme Brillat Savarin, way back in the 1700’s

since June, 2008

Today, we know from scientific research that eating a wide variety of food is good for our health. However, very often when we talk about food, it is linked to calories and weight control. Through these choices, dietary diversity has unfortunately been lost over the last 50 years.

Research has found that eating a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and proteins (non-animal as well as animal sources) are optimum for your gut health. Our gut has trillions of microbes, which is known as our gut microbiome, and they play an essential role in health, metabolism and weight. The more diverse our diet, the more diverse our gut microbiota. The great thing about our gut microbiota is that a change in diet can have an immediate impact on it.

What are the elements that help promote healthy gut bacteria?

1. Prebiotics

Prebiotics are the substrate that our gut bacteria feed on. If we can hit a weekly target of 30 different plant-based foods (including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, seeds, and nuts) which are packed with naturally occurring prebiotics, we will provide the nourishment that our gut microbiota requires to flourish.

2. Probiotics

Probiotics help us in bringing good microbes into our gut. They are a good way of adding beneficial and diverse bacteria and yeasts to our gut. Adding fermented food to your diet is a great way of consuming probiotics. Foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi, miso, sourdough bread, natural apple cider vinegar, and some cheeses are all great for boosting the good bacteria in your gut.

3. Synbiotics

Synbiotics involve combining beneficial microorganisms with substrates to confer health benefits. This is the third route to improving your gut microbiota. Examples include combining seeds, nuts, and yogurt.

New research is looking at the link between our gut microbiota and diseases like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), depression, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, as scientists have found the link between our gut and the brain (gut brain axis).

Just as we have lost dietary diversity, equally at risk is the biodiversity in our ecosystem. The United Nations has highlighted this issue in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly Goal 15: Life on Land. This goal aims to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss.

Clearly, what is good for our gut (diversity in foods choices) seems to be also good for our planet. So why not - “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

THE BRITISH CLUB GOES GREEN FOR WORLD EARTH DAY!

In commemoration of World Earth Day, our staff took a green step forward by planting a row of lemon trees near the poolside. Have you had the chance to spot the vibrant yellow lemons yet?

Not only do lemon trees contribute to the fresh and lively atmosphere of the Club, they also play a crucial role in producing oxygen and filtering pollutants from the air. Through this initiative, we aim to reduce the Club's environmental footprint and inspire others to join us in nurturing our planet.

Fourteen years ago, what began as mere curiosity has blossomed into a pioneering force in Singapore’s craft beer landscape. At the helm stands Crystalla Huang, the first certified female Singaporean brewmaster. Armed with a degree in beer brewing science from VLB Berlin, the world’s oldest beer brewing unvieristy, Crystalla also boasts training in food science and a Bachelor’s in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America.

As Singapore commemorates its 59 years of independence, we proudly present a selection of locally crafted beers this summer, celebrating our nation’s spirit and ingenuity.

FOOTBALL Towards another end…

As we close in on the end of another season, not only do we have the sad news of no more competitive league football for a few months (friendlies, intersections and 5 and 7 a-sides only), we have a few stalwarts leaving. So we say farewell to Andy (Skues), Jim (Rowan), Matt (Blake) and Stewie (Frame).

In the leagues, the BCFC Lions (our open age team) had a great season and should finish near to the top of the EQL league (or top if everything goes their way!). It was not so positive for the BCFC Bulldogs in the Masters league (SuperVets) where a change in age criteria meant we weren’t as competitive as we would like, and so we await next season to go again.

BCFC Vs Exiles – Last Game
BCFC Vs SCC Padang May 2024

Since the last time of writing, we have also been on the early year tour to Phuket in March. A fantastic three days of football, fun, making new friends, lots of laughter with the occasional sore head. The tour started with the early tourists playing golf, followed by a very enjoyable 7 a-side inter section game on the Friday. The Saturday, we played a mixed team (in terms of ages) from the British International School. We competed against some exprofessional footballers extremely well and whilst well beaten, overall did manage to win the final 20 minutes spell 2-1. Next tour is already pencilled in for Bali on 27 to 29 September. If interested, do get in contact.

For those new to the Football Section of the British Club, we run a thriving section across all age groups (16 - 67+) playing 5, 7, and 11-a-side football on a regular weekly basis for close to 20 years.

If you would like to join in the fun and / or play some competitive football (or have a contact for a full-time pitch lease), please contact football@britishclub.org.sg or speak to the staff at Pro Shop.

GOLF

Section Updates

It has been a busy few months of golf within the Golf Section with several social events and one of our flagship annual competitions taking place.

Our monthly social games at Keppel Sime and in Malaysia, catering for both midweek and weekend golfers have been continuing and there have even several new winners now qualifying for our end of season Order of Merit competition in November.

We have also inaugurated a monthly midweek Top Tracer social at the Laguna practice facility - involving a “virtual” game where we use the range facilities to play a globally renowned course with top tracer technology. This is a fun format which enhances a standard range practice session for our golfers. We have introduced a ladder with cumulative points from each game contributing to an end of season award.

Pairs Invitational – 28 May Sentosa Golf Club The Serapong course.

40 golfers assembled on 28 May, for the annual Pairs Invitational competition at The Serapong Course, Sentosa. This event is designed to allow Golf Section members to invite a non-member or guest and participate as a team in the annual golf competition. Played over 18 holes on a better ball Stableford scoring system, the event caters to a wide range of handicaps and abilities, allowing all to compete for the prestigious trophy and bragging rights.

Winners - Andy Clark and James Taylor

Last year’s winners Jan Chen and Tan Teng Teng returned to defend their trophy, albeit with new team members each and we had a great showing of golf section, Club members and guests all keen to pit their game against the renowned course that recently hosted the LIV Golf Singapore event. The course was in magnificent condition with fast greens, punishing rough and tight fairways, ready to penalise all but the most accurate and consistent golfers. Scoring on the day was good with 11 of 20 teams posting under par scores against handicap, resulting in a tight battle for the winning positions with the lead changing hands several times on the back 9 holes.

With a very strong back 9 showing the eventual winners, on a countback were Andy Clark and his guest, James Taylor-Alford.

Full list of winners as follows:

Golf Pairs Invitational Champions: Andy Clark and James Taylor Alford

2nd Place Pair: Matthieu Ginestet and Joris Bernard (Olympique Gaulois)

3rd Place:

Adam Bozeman and Mark Willis

4th Place: Tim Barkham and Louis Roche

5th Place:

Gary Smithson and Dughall Aitken

Closest to the Pin contest: Richard Holloway and Gary Smithson

Longest Drive contest: Mark Willis and Adam Bozeman

Special thanks and mention to our sponsor for the event, Montigo Resort Batam for putting forward prizes for the event and supporting the Golf Section.

Upcoming events and games

Look out for dates towards the end of August for a section weekend stay and play event in Batam. In co-operation with Montigo Resort Batam, we run a 2-day-1-night weekend with two games, likely to be at Palm Springs and Batam Island Country Club.

Also coming up and currently scheduled for 26 September, will be the annual Club Championship, to be played on one of Singapore’s premier courses.

Thanks to all section members for supporting our events and to the committee for organising ongoing golf activities for the section. See you soon out on the course!

PADEL Growing Pains

The British Club Padel section is 15 months old. Whilst BC sport sections live in time periods more aligned to ‘dog years’, we are essentially young, not a toddler, more of an adolescent.

We have had a decent growth spurt and with over 50 section members and we are now just behind our older siblings, tennis, squash and golf. As with growing youngsters the world over we are starting to push a few boundaries, get more demanding and ask for large sums of money from our parents … not to go down to Boat Quay, but to build courts. BC’s own Padel courts remains the goal and we are very grateful for all the help and support from various committees who are helping guide us along this path.

We have achieved our initial aims of getting up and running, achieving healthy Social Padel Sessions on Tuesday nights and gaining members from men, women, young and not so young. Social Tuesdays now frequently take over all four courts at SingPadel and are often over-subscribed.

This is one reason we are now looking at other avenues to help us to play more Padel. On the list of options are adding an Intermediate/High Intermediate group night on at SingPadel. Adding Introduction to Padel sessions to encourage more beginners to take up the sport. We are considering a Tour, possibly to Bali or more likely Phuket to take advantage of more court availability and the cheaper coaching that is, by all accounts, very affordable and very good quality. Friendly tournaments within the BC or against others are also on the list.

Luckily Singapore seems to be getting the Padel bug and there are more options available for people to play popping up all over the island. There are courts in Sentosa, Dempsey, Jurong, Waterfront Copthorne, Laguna and significant plans for more at the old SITA tennis academy, Redhill and a number of other sites. Many social Padel groups are forming bringing random Padel addicts together to play, but to be honest there is nothing better than playing with BC friends. So come and join us on a Tuesday evening!

PICKLEBALL Section Updates

Pickleball is having a moment, and here at the Club, we’re feeling it! We’ve seen a surge of inquiries and new members joining our ranks, eager to pick up a paddle and enjoy this fun and friendly sport. We’re particularly excited to welcome a wave of young members who are bringing fresh energy to the courts.

To further expand our pickleball family, we recently hosted a group of players from the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) for a friendly match. It was a great day of sportsmanship and camaraderie. This is just the beginning – we’ll be organising more friendly matches in the coming months, so stay tuned!

Looking to get started? We’re here to help! We offer beginner classes every first Sunday of the month from 7 to 8pm. Our experienced members will guide you through the basics and get you rallying in no time.

So, whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious newcomer, grab your paddle and join us! There’s always room for one more on the court. See you there!

RUGBY Section Updates

Given the Professional Rugby season in Europe is drawing to a close, I thought it might be interesting to provide an insight into some elements from the end of the season until the start of the preseason.

Following the last match of the club season, your holiday begins, and an opportunity to ‘reset your metabolism’ opens. Technically, this means to optimise your water intake, get good sleep, build muscle mass, increase protein update, and more. However, after a gruelling, intensive season, my teammates and I took this to mean taking two weeks off to lie in the sun, eat pizza, drink a few beers, and give the body some time to recover. It’s unheard of for a player to play the whole season without having an injury niggle of some sort.

Upon return from hols, the Club would have provided a pre-preseason workout schedule and after retrieving this for the bin, it would be time to commence your own personal preparation for preseason training. Typically, this prepreseason training schedule will be a combination of medium intensity weightlifting, medium runs, swimming, and some rehab exercise depending on your injury profile. Very unwise to rock up to preseason club training without having done anything for a month.

The first two weeks of preseason typically comprises of an intensive strength and conditioning phase with limited exposure to a rugby ball.

Every day of the first two weeks will start at 7am, with either a Strong Man Circuit (22 exercises, refer to pictures) or a strength session in the gym until 8am.

From 8am to 8:45am, there will be a communal buffet breakfast (Kippers, eggs, porridge, bacon and sausages, etc.) followed by a period of down time.

Around 9:45am, a third-party provider will hold a session (boxing training, wrestling or sprint mechanics, or yoga, depending on which day of the week) until 11am.

At 11:30am, we gather for another buffet lunch, featuring steak, chicken, lots of fibrous greens, and a few carbs.

By 12:30pm, it’s nap time. A dedicated room, blacked out with cots in place for all players to take a recovery nap. Sounds unusual but at this point and after the sessions in the morning, the fatigue levels would be so high you could sleep on a clothesline.

At 1:30pm, a rugby ball is introduced, and conditioned games are played until 3pm. This involves high-intensity non-contact touch rugby with sanctions for poor pass execution, laziness, talking back to the coach, etc. This sanction would be in the form of a ‘sin bin’, a one-on-one session for 5-7 minutes with the assistant conditioning coach, then straight back into the intensive games.

At 3pm, it’s time for ice bath recovery and massages.

Getting home after this, I crawled up the stairs at home at 4pm, went straight to bed and woke up at 6pm, ate dinner, (chicken, steak, eggs, etc) then went back to bed again! Unto the next morning.

All this activity backed me up with multiple supplements, Creatine and whey protein (a must), BCAA, HMB, ZMA, Astaxanthin, Vitamin B12.

Caveat: The above schedule is from 2008! I suspect this has changed significantly since then, but the intention would be the same, to ensure all players to get lean, fast, functioning strong and fit in prep for game strategy training which commences after the first two weeks. Hope this gave you a little insight, albeit outdated, into the preparation required at the top level.

SQUASH BC Squash on Tour!

Over the weekend of 9 to 11 May, the British Club Squash Tour of 2024 took eight section members to Hong Kong for match-ups against the Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) on Friday, and Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) on Saturday. It was slated as a weekend of intense and competitive squash, particularly against HKFC as all of the BC squad were doubled up for matches (with some against ex-pros!). Several of the group took pre-match hydration and preparation seriously, with one in particular, fully resting until 3pm before the first fixture after taking time to perfect his shots the evening prior.

The matchups delivered as advertised, with all participants vying for a much coveted win. For our efforts, BC emerged victorious over HKCC, who were gracious hosts despite bowling short on home turf. Unfortunately, we missed our shot against HKFC, whose squad depth proved too much of a challenge for BC’s weary legs. Regardless of the outcomes, it was a weekend that cemented friendships between the clubs, and we look forward to reciprocating as hosts to both HKCC and HKFC when they swing by Singapore on tours of their own.

This year’s tour was also the “last hurrah” for a stalwart of the section, Omair Azam. Frequently dedicating his personal time to organising inter-club friendlies, local squash league participation as well as tours, Omair has had a profound impact on the vibrancy, sass, and character of the section. To say that he will be sorely missed is an understatement. Wherever life takes him next, we all wish him every happiness and success. Don’t be a stranger (bar).

A Fond Farewell to Omair Azam from the Squash Section

Safe travels, my friend, it has been a real laugh having you in the section. You made up for your mediocre squash by doing a great job running the tours and introducing us to strange drinks and stranger bars J Come visit soon!...

Jamie S

As soon as Omair Azam first burst onto the BC Squash scene back in 2018, he made an impact. What a character – and fair to say there is never a dull moment when Omair’s around. An avid squash player, always volunteering to play in socials, friendly fixtures, COSMO and inter-club league matches, his youth and energy will be sorely missed -- off the court as much as much as on it! He did a stint as Squash Section Co-Convenor with me, captained many of the inter-club matches, arranged overseas tours to Bangkok and Hong Kong, and was always there at the centre things at our various official and unofficial social events. Sadly, he leaves us “uncles” for the next chapter and adventure, and we wish him all the best. Despite the endless goodbyes, it never seemed like he was really leaving, and we have no doubt he will be a pivotal component to the BC Squash Section alumni...

Ah ah! Ah ah!! I’m really going to miss you Cousin Omair… especially the support and encouragement and coaching sessions you always threw my way. I’m terribly pleased you will be closer to your family as you have always wanted in this new chapter… that also ensures Trey and I will get to see you very soon when we visit in the summer… Looking forward to it!

Jessxxxx

He should have been Club president. A character that lit up the squash cortex with style, skill and colourful diversity. Irreplaceable and never to be forgotten, Omair will live long in the BC Squash Hall of fame. We will miss our dear friend “crazy socks and all” and look forward to his very welcome frequent return visits!

SWIMMING Conquering the Oceanman, A Tale of Grit, Jellyfish and Glory

In this quarter’s edition, we bring you an exhilarating account of a recent adventure where six of our intrepid swimmers took on the challenging waters of Krabi, Thailand, participating in the prestigious Oceanman Swim.

Our team, a vibrant mix of strength and determination, embarked on a challenging journey. Dianne Faulks, Jo Friedhoff, and Nathalie Farrow powered through a strenuous 5km swim, while Matt Forrest, James Tyler and David Green really pushed their limits with a gruelling 10km stretch. Their determination and perseverance were truly inspiring, making us all proud.

However, the path to victory wasn’t as smooth as we’d hoped. A formidable force of jellyfish decided to join the race, adding an unexpected layer of difficulty to the already demanding swim. It was a rare sight to see every

swimmer emerge from the water, bearing the battle scars of countless jellyfish stings getting hosed down in what we can only call a vinegar spray gun and mummifying faces with vinegar-soaked bandages.

Yet, the pain and struggle did not go unrewarded. Our team emerged victorious, bringing home not just one, but three medals. We are thrilled to announce that we secured 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal in the competition. This triumphant achievement is a testament to our swimmers’ grit, resilience, and unwavering spirit.

But the excitement doesn’t end there! Our stellar performance in Krabi has earned us a coveted invitation to the Oceanman world championships in Dubai this December. This is a monumental achievement, a chance to showcase our Club’s talent on a global stage.

This rollercoaster ride in Krabi wasn’t just about the shiny medals or the jellyfish dance-off. It was about pushing our limits, strengthening our bonds, and celebrating in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Each sting was a badge of honour, each stroke a testament to our resilience, and each breath a step towards personal growth and collective victory.

From jellyfish stings to championship invitations, our Krabi adventure has been a wild ride! Our swimmers have shown us that even the most unexpected obstacles can be navigated with grit and a good dose of humour. As we prepare for our annual Gili’s trip, we’re packing our goggles, sunscreen, and a healthy sense of adventure. Let the aquatic escapades continue!

TENNIS Section Updates

Junior Tennis Event

The mighty British Club Junior Tennis team hosted the Tanglin Club in April for a highly enjoyable afternoon of 20-minute timed matches under the baking sun.

Our juniors, aged from 10 to 16 years old, were hoping to get even following defeat at the hands of Tanglin back in November. However, the visitors proved to be a formidable force - there were some lethal weapons pummeling forehands down the middle of the court which drew equal gasps of amazement and awe from the parents watching at Scores.

Team Tanglin sealed another victory, but our juniors played with pride and made the Club proud. We plan to hold more inter-club matches and a fast four tournament after the international school holidays, so please do get in touch if keen.

The Junior boxes are also up and running with some fantastic prizes to win for the top three points scorers.

Please contact tennis@britishclub.org.sg if you’re interested to join us!

BC Tennis Open - Supersized

The BC Open Tournament is the section’s biggest event of the year, and this year’s was the biggest that the committee can remember. Around 80 players entered and nearly 200 matches had to be scheduled across singles and doubles draws, main draws and plate events.

On the women’s side, last year’s singles and doubles champs were not playing, and the question was whether new stars would emerge or whether familiar names would return to the honours board. In the doubles, the seasoned pairing of Emma Pike and Clytie Morgan won a gripping 3-set final – well done to them. The singles final features Myrna Jivraj and a new junior member, Katelyn Chua. The event was interrupted by rain for most of the last two weeks and is still to finish. Neither have won the title before and so a first-time champion is guaranteed.

On the men’s side, familiar faces dominated, although another junior – Ethan Heng – made it to the singles semifinals. The singles final will be a repeat of last year’s: Charlie Thomas vs Matt Rawbone. Charlie also reclaimed his doubles title with Jonny Wright – their guile and consistency are proving too much for all comers. The mixed doubles winners were prior champs too – Matt Rawbone and Kristy Carter were exceptional in claiming that crown.

The plate draws are an important part of the tournament, giving a second chance to those who draw a star player in their first game. The Ladies’ singles winner was Kat Thrall, and the Men’s doubles crown was claimed by Simon Puckering and Jon Worboys. The other three finals are still to be played.

As well as our knock-out events, the Men’s Boxes are still thriving, our juniors are playing more and more internal tournaments and external fixtures, and our ladies’ WITS teams have just wrapped up another season. More social events are being planned, and the Masters’ knock-out tournament will take place in the second half of the year.
