President’sMessage
Dear Members,
Welcome back from your summer holidays and I hope you had a wonderful time with your families. To the members who have just joined us, welcome to The British Club. The peace you have enjoyed at the Club over summer will soon be enhanced by a range of upcoming exciting events!
This September, the Club will be hosting our first Formula One Event, sponsored by Brighton College. Members get a chance to meet 'The Original Stig' from the popular UK show Top Gear, and hear all about his exciting life, trying to get into F1 and his time whilst at Top Gear. I expect the event to sell out quickly so make a reservation as soon as you receive this issue.
In addition to this, we have a fantastic lineup of events to look forward to, including Halloween Night, Pool Parties, Comedy Night and more, so flip through every page of this magazine to find out more.
On a more serious note, I would like to update members that the Chiller Replacement Project will be completed by end September. The old chiller system, which had been in use for 19 years, had one of its three chillers out of operation since 2018 due to unavailability of obsolete parts. The old chillers were high in energy consumption. With the installation of the new, modern, high-efficiency chillers, we can achieve better energy efficiency as they adapt to varying operating conditions and optimise performance in real-time, managing the airflow in the club. This is an important initiative we mentioned at the previous AGM where we hope to generate good run rate expense reductions and focus on delivery of our environmental and sustainability agenda.
Lastly, I would like to remind all members to download the British Club mobile app. The app is designed to streamline the registration process for booking courts, registering for events, and even placing orders from the Windsor Shop and Verandah Café. I strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this convenient tool, and we look forward to seeing more members enjoy the enhanced experience it offers.

Dear Members,
I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer break. Welcome back to the Club.
I'm pleased to share some exciting news; we have just added two prestigious Clubs to our reciprocal network—the Rand Club in South Africa and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, Australia. Additionally, we will soon be welcoming the new Summit Club in Jakarta, a fantastic option for those frequently traveling to Jakarta for business or leisure and the prestigious 12 Hay Hill in Mayfair, London. You can view all of our Reciprocal Clubs on our website.
For members who have been eagerly awaiting the return of the Salad Bar at Windsor Arms, I am delighted to announce that it will be back from Monday, 16 September. You can now enjoy unlimited access to the salad bar for an additional $12+ with any main course.
We have achieved our target attendance of 500 pax for the British Club Charity Ball taking place at the Shangri La on Saturday, 7 December. We have managed to add an addition 50 seats to give those of you who haven’t booked yet a chance to grab a seat. I would like to extend my appreciation to everyone for your support. As this is a charity event, our goal is to raise a significant sum for our two chosen charities. The Management team and I look forward to a memorable night together.
I am pleased to announce that the Development Committee has approved the purchase of a wonderful Pirate Ship climbing frame which will become the centre piece of our new outdoor playground by the pool. The playground equipment is being custom built in Denmark, and we hope to take delivery in January 2025. Thank you in advance for your patience, I am sure it will be worth the wait.
Lastly, Mr Nikesh (Nik) Mehta OBE has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Singapore, in succession to Ms Kara Owen CMG CVO who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Nik, his wife Anna, and their two children, Arran and Sienna became members of the Club in August, so do say hello and welcome them when you see them around the Club.

THE BRITISH CLUB MEMBER SURVEY 2024
Should the Club allow domestic helpers to supervise children?
For children's sports lessons we have seen an increase in members asking if their helpers can take children to lessons, as both parents are working. Currently domestic workers are not permitted in the Club.
The results will be analysed at Main Committee to review the current bye-law.

Chiller Replacement Project
An HVAC chiller is a crucial component of large-scale air conditioning systems, responsible for keeping spaces cool and comfortable. The Club's old chiller system, which was 19 years old, had one of its three units out of service since 2018 due to discontinued parts. Additionally, these aircooled chillers were highly energy consuming.
The recent chiller replacement project aimed to upgrade our outdated cooling systems with new, energy-efficient models to reduce energy consumption and improve climate control. The old system had reached the end of its operational life, and with parts no longer available, it was essential to address the risk of failure and inefficiency. The outdated chillers were also being phased out across Singapore due to their energy inefficiency.
Following extensive sourcing and physical testing, the Club has selected new chillers that meet AHRI (Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute) standards and have been awarded the Singapore Green Building Product Certificate (SGBC). These modern, high-efficiency units feature advanced technology, such as variable speed compressors and sophisticated control systems, allowing them to adapt to varying conditions and optimise performance in real-time.
The overall project cost was SGD 1.7 million. However, this investment is deemed essential for the long term, as the new chillers are expected to greatly reduce energy consumption and deliver substantial cost savings. For more information, please contact our Development Committee at development@britishclub.org.sg.

Members came together at Verandah Café in celebration of Singapore’s 59th birthday, all dressed in red and white! The event was completed with the aroma of local hawker favourites, such as the Satay, Bak Kut Teh, locally crafted beers, and more.
There were also fun quizzes, balloon sculpting, face painting, and traditional games for all to enjoy. A special thanks to David Wong, our Honorary Secretary and Chairman of Disciplinary Committee, for leading the pledge!

Elevating Health with Science: Inside Riviera Ozone's Revolutionary Therapies
My husband and I started ozone about a while ago. We knew a bit about ozone prior to our first session and so were very keen to experience it. We did a course of 10 sessions and felt benefits immediately, more energy and clear minded.
We are carrying on with it, once a month or more if travelling and feeling particularly tired. We feel it is a great investment for preventive care and it is also enjoyable. Highly recommend!
My experience with Ozone therapy and Nicky has been nothing short of amazing- I’m hooked for life! Ozone therapy is so amazing for speeding recovery, reducing brain fog and fatigue, increasing blood circulation, removing toxins, boosting immunity and has many other benefits…
I will definitely be back! Nicky is so knowledgeable and really provides a top notch experience. I highly recommend!
Riviera Ozone, founded seven years ago on the French Riviera, now operates four clinics across France, Budapest, and Singapore, serving over 1,000 clients. At the heart of our innovation is the ozone sauna therapy pod, utilising transdermal ozone therapy, the purest form of activated oxygen.
This advanced pod offers eight different treatments which are received simultaneously in a 30-minute session:
• Far Infrared • Aromatherapy • Ozone therapy O3 • Photon light therapy • Ultraviolet irradiation • Pure Oxygen breathing O2 • Whole body Hyperthermia • Transdermal Carbonic acid CO2
In just one session, you can achieve a significant boost in your overall well-being. This treatment enhances cellular metabolism, promote weight loss, and provides a full-body detox. Some of the benefits include helping alleviate jet lag, increasing athletic performance, and speeding up recovery after injuries. Additionally, it smooths fine lines, leaving your skin looking more radiant and youthful. This session offers a quick yet comprehensive approach to revitalising your body and enhancing your natural glow.
Should you have any health concerns, please contact Nicky via info@rivieraozone.com or visit https://rivieraozone.sg/

A LABOUR GOVERNMENT
what their manifesto pledges may mean for you
By Huw Wedlock Director, Singapore
A change of government brings new rules and legislation. Here we take a look at some of the main pledges made by Labour in their manifesto that may occur in the coming months.
Pensions
Labour will retain the valuable triple lock for the state pension. They also stated that they will adopt reforms to ensure that workplace pension schemes take advantage of consolidation and scale, and will undertake a review of the pensions landscape to consider what further steps are needed to improve pension outcomes and increase investment in UK markets. Labour did announce that they will not reintroduce the Lifetime Allowance but will instead leave the current regime in place for the time being until the planned review is complete.
Non-dom status and IHT
Labour have made it clear that they will abolish non-domiciled status (‘non-dom’). This will only affect a small number of individuals across the UK, but they tend to be some of the wealthiest. Domicile is a concept that does not exist in most other countries’ legal systems, which tend to only recognise residency. Residency is where someone is physically located in any particular year and is based on a number of tests including amount of time spent and ties to the country. Domicile can best be understood as someone’s ultimate home, or ‘the place to which the person will ultimately return’.
Labour have also pledged to end the use of offshore trusts to avoid UK inheritance tax (IHT). These are known as excluded property trusts – they are typically created by people who move to the UK and want to exclude the property they owned from their country of origin from UK IHT.
Taxation
Labour have made it clear they will not increase National Insurance, the basic, higher, or additional rates of Income Tax, or VAT. As such they will need to draw on other sources of potential revenue such as Capital Gains Tax or the Oil and Gas levy. These will be published in due course. Labour have stated that they will end the VAT exemption and business rates relief for private schools to invest in state schools, which could mean that private schools may increase their fees.
Corporation tax
Labour will cap corporation tax at the current level of 25% for the entire parliament and will act if tax changes in other countries pose a risk to UK competitiveness. This will be welcome, as Corporation Tax was raised to the current level by the previous government, from a prior level of 19%.
Mortgages
One of Labour’s statements in their manifesto was to be tough on government spending rules in order to keep mortgages as low as possible. Their plan is to create a permanent, comprehensive mortgage guarantee scheme in order to support first-time buyers who struggle to save for a large deposit, with lower mortgage costs.
With a new government in power, we could see more legislative changes in the coming months and an interesting Autumn Statement delivered by the new Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Nicola Stafford is far from your typical expat. With her children starring in a Netflix movie and her past as a business owner in Monaco, Nicola has many interesting stories to share. Read on to discover more about Nicola Stafford and her life journey!
Introduce yourself, and what made you join The British Club?
Andy and I moved from the South of France; having lived outside the UK for over 25 years. We do miss England and the food so the British Club and its warm welcome, was a natural choice for us!
Let’s dive into family fun! Share with us a little about you and your family.
Andy's job in software has taken him all over the world, and now we're happily settled in Singapore. I used to own a company in Monaco supporting super yachts until I suffered two strokes, the first when I was eight months pregnant; at that point I knew I needed to prioritise my health. My background in the pharmaceutical industry led me search for an alternative solution; which I found. I now have three ozone clinics in Europe and have recently opened my fourth in Singapore. Riviera Ozone is the first transdermal ozone therapy clinic to be permitted into Singapore.
Sebastian and Saffron have recently starred in a Netflix movie, both children were born in Cannes, France and attend IFS school here and are excited to meet new friends at the club.
What is you and your children’s go-to activity at the Club?
Sebastian and Saffron are great swimmers, and they want to start tennis lessons next season. Saffy also loves her Taekwondo.
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
The Indian is the best in Singapore, Andy was born in India, so he knows a thing or two about the cuisine and we love talking to the chefs.
Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club.
Having joined in June, we've enjoyed discovering all the interesting facilities around the club. We're looking forward to the upcoming events and Christmas festivities. At the time of writing this, we had just attended the new members reception which was a fun, relaxed networking opportunity. We'd encourage any new members to attend, and the food was a true taste of Britain! Meals are always made wonderful thanks to the amazing staff at all the restaurants.
Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.
Andy and I are both half Dutch and we are ex-county swimmers. We still enjoy the odd race together, although a little slower pace now. I started scuba diving at seven, a similar age to Andy as our parents were keen divers..and we own a plot of land in Fiji, for our retirement.

WORLD FOOD DAY
By Anne Schot, member of the Club
since October,
2017
Wednesday, 16 October, marks annual World Food Day. This year's theme is Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future. ‘Foods’ means diversity, nutrition, affordability, and safety.
While farmers produce enough food to feed more than the global population, hunger persists. Out of the 8.1 billion people on Earth today, up to 783 million face food insecurity. It is important to note that the absence of hunger does not mean food security. Too many people are unable to afford healthy diets. According to the FAO1, unhealthy diets are the leading cause of all forms of malnutrition – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. More vulnerable people are often forced to rely on staple foods or less expensive foods that can be unhealthy, while others suffer from the unavailability of fresh or varied foods, lack the information they need to choose a healthy diet, or simply opt for convenience.
Singapore is no exception. The Food Bank Singapore (www.foodbank.sg), the coordinating organisation for all food donations in Singapore, serves more than 100,000 families and over 300,000 people with food insecurity. Food is the third most basic human need after air and water. Everyone should have the right to adequate food. The World Food Day website (https://www.fao.org/ world-food-day/en) discusses what we as consumers can do to ensure all people have access to enough diverse, nutritious, and safe foods. While some may be easier to implement in Singapore than others, here are some of the practices we can adopt:
• Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits daily and find ways to add more legumes, nuts, and whole grains to your diet. Legumes and nuts are great sources of plant-based protein. They are also kinder on our planet because they require less water to produce and can enhance soil fertility.
• Adopt nutritious eating habits and encourage others to do the same. By prioritising healthy choices and spreading awareness, you contribute to the well-being of individuals and the overall improvement of public health.
• Practice food safety in your daily life. When grocery shopping or storing food, keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood away from other foods to avoid cross-contamination. Make it a habit to thoroughly wash your hands with soap before handling food and cook your foods thoroughly to kill any pathogens and disease-causing organisms that raw foods may have.
• Learn to understand food labels and ingredient lists so you can choose nutritious foods that contribute to a balanced, healthy diet, including information on energy (usually calories) and key nutrients such as salt, sugar, and fat. Food labels also help us to make sure our food is safe to eat. Food is usually still safe to eat after the“best before” date, whereas the “use by” date tells you when it is no longer safe to eat or drink. Understanding this reduces food waste.
At The British Club, we take food waste very seriously. For the menu planning, the kitchen uses ingredients that can be used in multiple dishes and cooked in various ways. The Club purchases its daily market perishable based on the business forecast. Food is properly stored and used following the first in first out system to maximise shelf life.
Here’s a quote from Executive Chef Sunny Sia:
The solution to food waste is not just to eat everything you buy, but to buy what you truly need.
We all have a role to play in making healthy food choices, reducing food waste, and protecting the environment. Enjoy World Food Day!

FOOTBALL Competitive Season Ends with a Strong Finish
By James Mcllhagga, Member of the Club since March, 2022
In our last 11-a-side football league update, our open-age team were in a close fight for the league title and after an exhilarating season finale, they unfortunately narrowly missed out on the title although secured a commendable third position. The commitment, enthusiasm and skills from a young side were evident throughout the season and they have a promise of better to come next season.
Pre-Season Friendlies and Opportunities for New Members
As we gear up for the upcoming season, we have organised a series of friendly matches for both open age and our vets’ teams. These matches provide an excellent chance for new members to showcase their talent, connect with fellow football enthusiasts, enjoy camaraderie over drinks at Scores and also get a bit of pre-season fitness under your belt. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking to kick the ball around, these pre-season games are not to be missed.
Social Football: Inclusive and Fun
Beyond our league competitions, we’ve now kicked off our Social Football initiative that welcomes players of all gender, ages and abilities. Saturday afternoons will now hear the sound of 5-a-side and 7-a-side games coming alive when laughter mingles with the sweat. And here’s the twist: we have mixed the adults and children together in the games to create a form of social harmony. Parents can high-five their little Messi-in-the-making, and friendships blossom over corner kicks. It’s football, yes, but also a celebration of community.
Get Involved!
Enough sitting on the sidelines! We’re building a football community. Whether you’re a nimble midfielder, a passionate supporter, or just someone who thinks “offside” is a mysterious land, we want you. Reach out to the Football Section and let’s kick off a season of passion, teamwork, and friendship. The grass awaits—lace up those boots and join the beautiful game!
For those new to the Football Section of the British Club, we have run a thriving section across all age groups (16 – 67+) playing 5, 7, and 11-a-side football on a regular weekly basis for close to 20 years.
If you would like to join in the fun and / or play some competitive football (or have a contact for a full-time pitch lease), please contact football@british.org.sg or speak to the staff at Pro Shop.
RUGBY Updates
By Neil Best, Rugby Ambassador of the Club
since June 2015
Given many of you have recently returned from a well-earned summer break, and as with every year we are seeing a healthy number of new arrivals, I thought it might be useful to give you an overview of Singapore’s highly developed local youth rugby scene.
The Main Youth Rugby Clubs are located across the island providing solid opportunities for kids to develop and grow. Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Academy, Centaurs Rugby & Touch Club, Dragons Rugby Club, Tanglin Rugby Club, Titans Rugby Club and closest to my heart, the mighty Singapore Irish Rugby all provide playing opportunities at a variety of times and membership options.
Whether you are new to the sport, or your kids have played before, the cores values of rugby (Respect, Integrity, Passion and Discipline) run deeply through in the youth system with oversight by the Singapore Rugby Union. The teams all compete in an annual programme of competitions in Singapore, and some of the teams also compete regionally.
If you want to reach out to any of the teams, most if not all offer free trials, and for those of you who many have concerns about welfare or safety, this is something taken very seriously within the Singapore youth rugby ecosystem and the benefits of getting involved in rugby vastly outweigh any potential downside.
Even then, there is a vibrant touch rugby alternative scene for those reaching 7/8 years of age and not ready to move to the contact version of the game. The British Club touch rugby group is itself enjoying somewhat of a renaissance and provides a great social and sporting opportunity, not just for youths but for those of you too old for youth rugby and not young enough to so easily avoid bruised egos and injury.
It is close to impossible to overstate the substantial benefits of team sport, a favoured expression of one of my coaches, “Rugby doesn’t develop character, it reveals it” remains as true now as it was in my early days of playing. Understanding how to accept feedback and learning how to physically and mentally prepare for competitive environments are invaluable skills for life, as are those of winning with grace and accepting defeat with respect and dignity. If getting involved in rugby wasn’t on your Singapore to do list for this year, perhaps it is now, and I’ll see you on the field or supporting one of the many competitions throughout the year.
Having considered which version of the sport you wish to try the benefits of being involved in a team sport are substantial. The saying, ‘Rugby doesn’t develop character, it reveals it’ and this is something which certain helps develop your child. Getting feedback from peers and coaches on deficiencies in your game, how to prepare and plan, be disciplined and learning to win with grace and lose with dignity are some of things that prepare anyone for life.
Notwithstanding these lessons, the sport is so inclusive and when you find a niche skill you have to add value to the team its rewarding and super fun.
The Tennis Never Stops
By The Slicer, Member of the Club since
April, 2007
The BC Open Tournament finally concluded in late June after multiple attempts at the remaining finals due to rain. Your new Ladies’ Singles champion is the exceptional Katelyn Chua who overcame Myrna Jivraj. Those who were glad that last year’s teen champions, Tamryn and Jessie, were not playing this year have a new problem. Katelyn is 17 and still at Junior College. She was top 10 in Singapore U16s last year and the way she cut through the field this year, she will be on the BC honours board a few more times in years to come.
The Men’s Singles title was claimed once again by Charlie Thomas, who beat Matt Rawbone in a repeat of last year’s final. The Men’s Singles plate was delayed too and was eventually claimed by Ted Roy who beat Nitesh Dugar in the final.
Those more seasoned members of the section who enjoy knock-out tennis don’t have long to wait for another fix. The Masters’ tournament will kick off in October with a singles draw for men 50 and over, and doubles competitions for pairs with 100 years between them (minimum 45). The ladies’ singles age cut-off will be announced closer to the time.
Meanwhile on court, the men are trying something new over the summer. While many are travelling the box leagues have been replaced by a ladder, which means more potential opponents for everyone. Your committee is always trying to find a way to give section members a better tennis experience and the change in format seems to have been popular so far. There will be prizes halfway through and at the end of the summer for the most matches played, the most matches won, and the most places climbed. As I write, Gavin Rodrigo is leading that last category with three wins from 3 against higher-placed opponents and a climb of 13 places.
The juniors have had their own competition too, and there was a great turn-out for the second round of the BC Junior Boxes. It was tight at the top, but Martin Fiscaris was the one who rose to the challenge and remained unbeaten. Congratulations Martin (he won a Babolat backpack)! Monty Woodrow finished a close 2nd (and took home a racquet bag) & Alex Olivares came in 3rd.
We would love more juniors to enter the next round in September. If you’d like your son or daughter to be included, please join the WhatsApp Junior Box group in the section’s WhatsApp group.
Huge Congratulations to BC’s own Christophe Marciano who won the Dunlop National 45-and-over open in June. He battled through 5 tough rounds and played exceptional, controlled but aggressive tennis in the final to claim the title. Chapeau Christophe.
