President’sMessage
Dear Members,
As we approach the end of the year, I am pleased to invite you to the Club’s 42nd Annual General Meeting which will be held on Wednesday, 20 November, in The Elizabeth Suite. I encourage all members to attend. Please find the notice on page 5 for more details on meeting agenda and nomination forms.
The Club is not immune to inflationary pressures in food and beverage and human resources however our top priority remains maintaining our status as the leading international Club in Singapore, while exceeding the expectations of our members and their families. I am proud to announce that we have achieved significant recognition this year, winning two awards: the Gold Award for Best Family Club in the Expat Living Reader’s Choice 2024, and Gold for Best Family Club in Singapore at the HoneyKids Love Local Awards 2024! Thank you for your votes that have enabled to receive these marvellous awards.
We continue our mission to make investment into the Club and many of these, after long planning cycles are now coming to reality. The Chiller replacement is on schedule and should be fully functional in the Club this quarter delivering much improved airflow and energy efficiency. We have further developments planned at the Millenium Sports Centre [a name that sometime gets forgotten!]. Here you will see a long overdue full renovation of the changing and bathrooms, a new concept in the design and layout of the existing SCORES restaurant with a total new Kitchen concept and more efficient modern equipment. The Gym will also see some renovations works and will be extended to include additional new equipment. Renovations involving existing courts are also in the planning.
We have advanced plans for an exciting new concept for the children’s playground next to the main swimming pool which you can read more about on page 8. All these are in line with the plan of work announced last year with more to come.
I look forward to seeing you at the year-end Charity Ball and the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Wishing you and your families a joyful and festive holiday season ahead.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Jeremy, Jenn and their lovely family, who have been part of the British Club community since COVID years. From family fun at the pool to enjoying delicious meals at the Club, they’ve embraced the many activities on offer. Read on as Jeremy shares their journey as members, favourite family activities, and some delightful memories they've created along the way.
Introduce yourself, and what made you join The British Club?
We are a family of five - Jeremy, Jenn, Charlotte (5), Lily (3) and Noah (1). Jenn actually bought The British Club family membership for my 40th birthday which happened during the COVID lockdowns - the Club was the perfect 'getaway' during that challenging time when we couldn't leave the country. Fast forward a few years later and we are still loving it, it's perfect for our young family.
Let’s dive into family fun! Share with us a little about you and your family.
I am a lawyer from the UK with a British father and Singaporean mother and am a massive Liverpool fan. Jenn is Australian from Melbourne so was hesitant about the British Club from the beginning but has quickly come round! We met in Singapore nine years ago and all three kids were born here. Charlotte and Lily both learnt how to swim at the British Club under the excellent tutelage of Coach Sharon - we are hoping that little Noah follows suit in due course!
What is you and your children’s go-to activity at the Club?
We love the pool and the playroom for the kids - which allows us (i.e Jeremy) a chance to enjoy the frozen margaritas which always makes [him] feel like we're on a micro-break from the hustle and bustle of city life! The girls always retreat to the playroom for colouring after meals. They also love the Little Chef sessions which both grandmas have been fortunate enough to accompany. They brought home the most delicious brownies!
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
The British Club curry goes without saying - although for us the pizza is perfectly made and always a hit with the whole family with its gooey cheese and just the right amount of crust. Jenn says char kway teow because the wok-hei is on point!
Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club.
We have been to quite a few events in the past few years - Singapore National Day, Halloween and Christmas Day luncheon celebrations have become our annual traditions. We have also been attending the Bingo nights with our friends where we have a flawless record of taking home a bottle of wine. The pantomime last year was a real hit with the girls and their faces when the larger-than-life Olaf appeared was priceless.
Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.
I appeared as an extra in the film 'Crazy Rich Asians' in the after-wedding party scene at Gardens by the Bay - blink and you'll miss me (my own mum is still trying to spot me several years later)! Jenn loves Harry Potter and has named our dog Harry and our cat Hermione... she now wants to get the girls a pet rabbit some day and name him Ron to complete the trio!

Climbing High, Treading Lightly: A journey through Greenland wilderness
By Abigail Bird, Member of the Club since November 2008
Greenland, a name that evokes visions of endless ice and ancient, silent glaciers, is an emptiness like no other. It's a land where the sky and sea blur into a horizon of icebergs and jagged mountains. Touching down on a strip of land so narrow it felt like a mere illusion was unnervingly surreal. The instant we landed, the urgency hit—gather your gear, move fast. The threat of polar bears, hungry and bold, loomed as we stepped off the plane. This was Greenland's way of saying, "Welcome to the edge". My 2-week expedition to Eastern Greenland was a mountaineering journey into one of the last untouched frontiers on Earth. I climbed unclimbed peaks, pushing into uncharted territory where few have ventured. As I ascended these remote mountains, I also took time to observe and understand the profound environmental impacts reshaping this fragile landscape. I gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges and the importance of preserving Greenland's pristine wilderness.
The air that greeted us was unlike anything I'd ever felt—crisp, almost brutally pure, cutting through the warmth of summer with a cold, indifferent breeze. It wasn't just refreshing; it was a reminder that we were now players in a relentless environment. Everything felt alien yet intoxicating. The isolation of this place struck me as we set up our camp, surrounded by nothing but the endless white ice and the haunting quiet of an untouched wilderness.
At 4 a.m., I found myself alone, patrolling our camp under the strange glow of the midnight sun. It was a scene both serene and unsettling. Whales breached in the distance, their songs mixing with the groaning of shifting icebergs—a symphony of the wild that I'll never forget. And always, in the back of my mind, the awareness that polar bears could be watching could be stalking. In this place, fear and awe walk hand in hand.
This wasn't just a trip. It was a confrontation with a world that might not exist much longer. Greenland's icy heart is melting. The island's glaciers are disappearing faster than we can imagine. This ice, holding enough water to flood cities, is dissolving into the sea, piece by piece. Greenland isn't just losing ice; it's losing itself. And as the ice recedes, so does the buffer between this remote wilderness and the rest of the world. The polar bears, now wandering further inland as their hunting grounds shrink, are the most visible casualties.
Navigating Greenland's treacherous sea ice was a vivid reminder of the profound impact climate change has on this fragile environment. Now thinner and more unpredictable, the oncestable ice floes turned our expedition into a delicate dance with danger. Rising global temperatures have accelerated the melting of sea ice, transforming what was once a solid foundation into a shifting maze of instability. At times, we found ourselves trapped in place, unable to move as the ice closed around us, a direct consequence of the warming climate. During one particularly fierce storm, an evacuation was out of the question, leaving us no choice but to hunker down and endure the relentless wet and cold until the weather finally relented. It was a powerful lesson in the necessity of preparation, adaptability, and teamwork— essential skills when confronting the harsh, unpredictable realities of a world being reshaped by climate change. The diminishing sea ice is more than just an obstacle for adventurers like us; it's a sign of broader implications for Greenland's ecosystems, its coastal communities, and rising sea levels across the globe.
As I navigated the rugged terrain beyond the ice, I couldn't help but notice the subtle yet significant signs of a world in flux. The glaciers, once towering ice giants, now receded more each day, leaving behind a landscape scarred by their absence. The fjords, which once held back the sea, were no longer as formidable, and the water levels had risen, encroaching on the land in a quiet but relentless advance. One of my team members, who had been here just last year and three years before, pointed out the dramatic difference in the glacier's retreat. The ice that had once stretched across vast distances had visibly diminished, exposing bare rock where there once was solid ice.
Ultimately, Greenland gave me a sense of urgency, feeling we are on borrowed time. The ice is melting, the bears are moving closer, and the world is changing in ways we can't fully comprehend. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my main sponsors, Rockstead Capital and WadzPay, for their invaluable support throughout this expedition. Their commitment to my mission has been instrumental in bringing to light the environmental changes occurring in remote and high-altitude regions. Thank you for believing in me and enabling us to explore and document these critical issues. I am grateful for Rockstead's and Wadzpay’s dedication to adventure and environmental awareness.
There are many ways to celebrate the festive season in a merry yet more sustainable manner and the Sustainability Committee is excited to share some thoughtful ideas with you. We’d love to hear your suggestions as well!
1. Eco-Friendly Decorations
• Natural Decorations: Use natural elements like pinecones, holly, ivy, mistletoe, or dried orange slices for festive decorations, or create a rustic look with fallen branches and leaves.
• Recycled Ornaments: Make DIY ornaments from recycled materials like old paper, cardboard, or fabric. You could upcycle old ornaments with eco-friendly paint or glitter.
• Energy-Efficient Lights: Switch to LED Christmas lights, which use less energy. Also, put them on timers to save electricity.
2. Sustainable Tree Options
• Potted Tree: Get a potted tree that you can replant in your yard after the holidays.
• Tree Rental: Opt for Christmas tree rental services, where they deliver a tree and collect it to replant after the season.
• Artificial Tree: If you already have an artificial tree, keep using it for years to reduce waste.
• Tree Alternatives: Use driftwood, stacked books, or branches in a vase to create a "tree" that can be decorated sustainably.
3. Green Gift-Giving
• Experience Gifts: Instead of material items, give experiences like tickets to a concert, a cooking class, or a membership to a local park or museum.
• Handmade or Upcycled Gifts: Consider making gifts like knitted scarves, candles, or personalised items from upcycled materials.
• Sustainable Packaging: Use reusable cloth bags, newspapers, or recycled wrapping paper. You can also wrap gifts in fabric (furoshiki) or reusable containers.
4. Eco-Conscious Feasting
• Local and Organic Food: Prepare your Christmas meal using locally sourced and organic ingredients. This supports local farmers and reduces your carbon footprint.
• Plant-Based Options: Incorporate plant-based or vegetarian dishes, as reducing meat consumption is one way to lessen environmental impact.
Dreaming of a GREEN Christmas!
By Anne Schot, member of the Club since October, 2017
• Zero-Waste Approach: Minimise food waste by planning portion sizes carefully. If you have leftovers, get creative with leftover meals or donate to food banks.
5. Environmentally Friendly Traditions
• Nature Walk: Instead of staying indoors, celebrate with a walk in nature, whether it’s a local park or forest. You can also make it a tradition to plant a tree or support reforestation efforts as part of your Christmas giving.
• Car-Free Day: Have a car-free Christmas by walking or biking to your destinations, or spending the day at home to cut down on emissions.
6. Eco-Conscious Cards and Invitations
• E-cards: Send electronic greeting cards to save on paper waste.
• Recycled Paper: If you prefer physical cards, choose ones made from recycled materials or make your own using old postcards, paper scraps, or other recyclable materials.
7. Give Back to Nature
• Donate to Environmental Causes: Support organisations that work towards conservation, sustainability, or wildlife protection.
• Volunteer: Spend part of the holiday season volunteering for local green initiatives like tree-planting, beach cleanups, or community gardening projects.
8. Sustainable Travel
• Stay Local: Consider having a staycation or hosting a local gathering instead of long-distance travel, which reduces your carbon footprint.
• Offset Carbon Emissions: If you must travel, consider offsetting your carbon emissions by donating to reforestation or renewable energy projects.
By incorporating these ideas, you can enjoy an eco-friendlier, "Green Christmas" that embraces the joy of the season while being mindful of the planet!

Strategies for taking income at retirement
By Huw Wedlock Director, Singapore
When you are ready to take your pension benefits, there are a number of options to consider in terms of how you do so.
PCLS
Pension commencement lump sum (PCLS) is known as the tax-free cash payment you can receive when starting your pension benefits (25% of your defined contribution pension).
Annuity purchase
Income drawdown
Income drawdown is the process of leaving the pension pot invested and drawing a flexible income to suit your requirements. It allows you flexibility according to your needs, with control over the amount, timing and frequency of the income you take.
An annuity is like a regular salary, where you purchase an annuity and are then paid a guaranteed amount (this does include income tax on the money you receive). Given that annuity rates have risen alongside interest rates (and thus represent better value) this is now a more complex decision.
It is possible to mix annuity with income drawdown to suit your specific needs depending on your goals. You may also be planning on taking income from other investments or property for example, you should consider all income options available to you when planning your retirement, and we advise speaking to a financial planner to review these options for you.
Expat retirement
An important factor to consider, especially for expats, is where in the world you will take residence when you take your pension benefits as this will drive the taxation of them.
It also pays to take currency into account, are your assets and future income liabilities well matched from a currency perspective? Does your current pension value in one country, match the expenses you will face living your retirement lifestyle in another?
Your retirement lifestyle
As retirement approaches it is important to evaluate your financial plans to make sure you can maintain a desired standard of living when the time comes. What is it that you want to achieve in retirement, is this more expensive than the lifestyle you live now? Having a strategy that both aligns with your goals and takes rising costs into account is essential.
Consulting a professional financial planner who can use a cashflow modelling tool will help verify all the factors in play to achieve that dream retirement and enable you to get to where you want to be without any financial concerns.

FOOTBALL
The Start of a New Season
By Tim Risbridger, Member of the Club since December, 2016
We kicked off the new football season on a high note this September, with both our Open Age and Super Vet teams securing wins. After a year of searching, inquiries, and setbacks, we’ve finally secured a regular Saturday pitch at Premier Pitch Khalsa. In addition, we’ve arranged a Saturday pitch at North London Collegiate School (NLCS) for our newly formed junior social footballers, complementing the regular Wednesday social 7-a-side football at The Cage, Dempsey. Huge credit goes to the Committee, and everyone involved in securing these pitches – no small feat in Singapore’s current climate.
At the time of writing, 23 BCFC footballers are in Bali for our September tour. The action begins on Friday with a 6-a-side tournament at Finns Recreation Club, followed by the big match on Saturday against Bali Wanderers FC at the Australian Independent School Bali. Beyond football, our tour includes golfing, body surfing, and some unforgettable dinners. It’s the camaraderie and shared laughter that make these tours truly memorable. This tour features players aged 25 to 68, hailing from as far afield as Malta, Bolton, and Tasmania!
By the time you read this in the November/December issue, we’ll be gearing up for our (in)famous Christmas long lunch and looking forward to our Annual Christmas Party.
If you’re new to the British Club or unsure if competitive league football is for you (yet!), come join our lively social football sessions twice a week – open to all ages, and skill levels. We play on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Get involved!
To join in the fun or play competitive football – or if you have a lead on a full-time pitch – feel free to contact us at football@british.org.sg or speak to the staff at the Pro Shop.
PADEL PADEL-PALOOZA
By El Chancletazo, Member of the Club since April, 2007
The Club’s Padel section continues to go from strength to strength, growing every month and featuring more and more converts from squash and tennis as well as newcomers to BC racquet sports. We are also seeing more and more husband & wife pairs at our social sessions as they realise what a wonderful game it is. It’s very easy to learn and very difficult to master but even if you have no idea of the difference between a vibora and a bandeja, don’t worry – nor do I. You are still welcome at the section’s Tuesday night socials at Singpadel.
Once a month, those socials are replaced by a more structured (and slightly more competitive) “rodeo” competition. The most recent was won by our brilliant convenor, Jamie Salamon (who certain does know how to hit a vibora) –well played Jamie.
BC representatives have also been active in the National Padel League and even internationally. Jamie and Ben Kiggell played the National Padel League summer season in Division 3, qualifying for the playoffs and winning 3 from 4 matches in the finals. Martin Verga and Showbik Kalra played in division 2 and qualified for their playoffs, while padel legend Matteo Ossocrudo (also known as Matt Rawbone when off court) starred in Division 1. Matt and Charlie Thomas have also paired up to play in the upcoming international AAPT tournament. Good luck to them from everyone in the section.
RUGBY Updates
By Neil Best, Rugby Ambassador of the Club since June 2015
Guinness Men’s Six Nations competition will take place between 31 January and 15 March 2025 and so a postAutumn International series and overview of considerations on the England set up would be helpful.
At the time of publication, England will have played the powerhouses of international rugby—New Zealand and South Africa (the once-mighty Australia though perhaps not so much these days, as well as giant-killers Japan), as they conclude their season with a summer tour.
The Autumn series will be the acid test for England as they change aspects of their backroom staff, with a sense of little distribution. The departure of Felix jones and the appointment of new Defence coach, former Bristol and Toulon flanker Joe El-Abd has surely not been ideal in preparation for the Six Nations.
Assuming that the defensive system put in place by Jones remains the same, it’s likely that Borthwick will afford his long-term friend, El-Abd, the Autumn series as a period of grace before he potentially attempts to bring his own defensive style in the Six Nations. It will be interesting to see if the blitz defence remains.
Additionally, Kevin Sinfield, the Rugby league legend and charity fund raising hero, has agreed to slim down his role in the set up and will continue as skills and kicking coach and it understood to be contacted until 2027. The importance of having a figure like Sinfield in and around the camp is hard to quantify, however given my limited knowledge of him as a coach, as a human being, this inspirational figure can only be of benefit to help firm up any perceived distribution and I’m sure Borthwick realises this.
Furthermore, Borthwick wanted to bring ex-Ulster and Saracens director of conditioning (expanded to group general manager at sarries) into the England set up as his head of strength and conditioning only to have been blocked by premiership rugby.
Notwithstanding the road bumps discussed above for England and the outcome of the autumn series, it proved to be an interesting time for England as they head to the Six Nations next year and those players wishing to impress both their national coach and the British and Irish lion’s staff.
SQUASH Non-stop Squash
By The Boaster, Member of the Club since April 2007
The British Club Squash Section is as busy as ever.
The annual handicap knock-out has just started with an innovative new handicapping system that gives the less skilled a greater chance of springing a surprise against the top players. Sadly, it didn’t help The Boaster in round 1 but look out for news of a possible new champion in the next magazine.
The box leagues continue – congratulations to Oliver Hopkins, Jamie Salamon, Kenzie Weeks and Shane Mitchell, who were box winners and were promoted after the last round.
Outside the section’s internal events, the 2024 Cosmo league has started. For the last two years, Team BC has started Cosmo brilliantly and faded into the final rounds. This year, we have tried something different and started in a distinctively average fashion with a win and two losses, setting ourselves up for a surge to the title in November.
We have also just played a social fixture at SCC - they were as hospitable as ever, except on court where they were ruthless. Congratulations to Andrew Marshall and James Nicholas who scored notable wins. We have a fixture planned with the Tanglin Club and plan to bounce back with a big win then.
More exciting than all the above are our plans for later in the year. We’ll be hosting a touring side from Bondi Squash Club on Thursday, 21 November and then on Wednesday, 27 November we have not one but TWO top 10 professional players coming to Club for a clinic, exhibition game, dinner and Q&A. New Zealand’s world #3 Paul Coll and his wife Nele Gills, the ladies’ world #5, will be gracing our courts November just before competing in the PSA event in Singapore. Mark your diaries.
To cap the year, on Saturday, 7 December, we will have our handicap KO finals day, the section AGM and yearend dinner. BC Squash truly never stops.
SWIMMING Saying Farewell to Two Legends
By Nathalie Farrow, Member of the Club since August, 2020
With a mix of sadness and gratitude, we bid farewell to the two pillars of our Master Swimming family. Rebecca and Phil Turley have been the heart and soul of our section for what feels like a lifetime. Their dedication and passion have shaped our swimming community into the welcoming and vibrant group it is today.
Becks, our beloved “mother of the club,” the glue that held us all together. You are more than just our master organizer; you are the warm hug we all needed after a tough practice, the listening ear when we needed to vent, and the unwavering cheerleader who celebrated every victory, big or small.
Your infectious enthusiasm and energy made every event feel like a family gathering. You fostered a sense of belonging and camaraderie that made our section feel like a true home away from home. Phil, your financial management has kept our finances in order, enabling us to invest in events that enrich our swimming experience. Your efforts behind the scenes have allowed us to thrive as a section. But beyond the spreadsheets, It’s Phil’s banter and always up for a good laugh that we’ll miss most.
Becks & Phil, you have been our mentors, cheerleaders, and friends to so many of us. While we’ll miss you dearly, we’re also incredibly grateful for the legacy you leave behind. You’ve set the bar high, and we’re inspired to carry their spirit forward!
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. We wish you all the best in your future adventures. You’ll always be part of our Master Swimming family!
Welcoming the New Committee: A Fresh Start with Familiar Faces
As we say goodbye to some familiar faces, we also warmly welcome our new committee members.
• Conveners: Cindee Allister
• Co-Convener: James Tyler
• Treasurer: Nathalie Farrow
• Secretary: Yien Leng Chin
This dynamic team brings a wealth of swimming experience and enthusiasm to the section. We are confident that they will build on the strong foundation laid by their predecessors and continue to elevate our Master Swimming section to new heights.
Upcoming Swimming Events
Get ready to dive into an action-packed season of swimming! Here are some of the exciting events on the horizon:

TENNIS Section Update
By Kim Koh, Member of the Club since July, 2019
SRC vs BC Friendly
The Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) invited a team of our players to play a friendly tournament on their newly refurbished courts at the Padang on Saturday, 7 September.
The BC Tennis Section will be looking to take our turn at hosting later in the year and arrange more friendlies with other clubs. If you are interested in participating in these non-league events, do sign up to the Tennis Section and let us know!
Many will recognise this seasoned player on court, blasting serves and ripping forehands, bringing together different groups of people to join her doubles games, and giving tips to less experienced players. Her name is also plastered all over the Honours boards at Scores.
Wishing Clytie Morgan a very Happy 21st Birthday this summer!
STA Interclub
The STA Interclub Doubles League is underway, with some pairs from the Men’s C and Ladies’ A teams playing home games. Head up to Scores to support the BC teams on Saturday afternoons, and Sunday mornings!
The Autumn 2024 WITS season is also underway, with 7 teams across 8 division representing the British Club. Matches are held from Monday to Thursday mornings, and are played across the island. You’ll see many of our teams playing their home matches during the week! If you are interested in joining a WITS team for next season (Spring 2025), please get in touch with us at tennis@britishclub.org.sg!
