• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, Half a year has passed, it seems, in the blink of an eye and I hope that everyone has had a healthy and fulfilling 2018 thus far. 2018 has seen the Club reschedule the Best of British celebrations to span the entire year. This was decided as a result of feedback from members that questioned whether the previous one-week BoB period devalued each individual event. This year the schedule commenced in April with An Evening with the Last Captain of The Royal Yacht Britannia, followed by Faulty Towers and The Royal Wedding Street Party in May. The month of June saw guest Chef Lesley Waters bringing us two delightful events, the Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner and the Cooking Demo and Lunch. All these events have been enormously popular, which is heartening. This month, we have the Prize Bingo Night where part of the ticket proceeds will go to supporting the Club’s charities. There are many events to come but I would like to draw your attention to the final Best of British event for this year, which is The Great British Ball. This will take place on 30 November and the Club and the British Chamber of Commerce are joining together to bring you an evening to remember. With live performances from the Gurkha Contingent, a local choir and with a British Christmas bazaar as well as great food, live music and dancing into the night, the ball will celebrate all things British and bring a warming Christmas spirit. 9 August will see us celebrate Singapore’s 53rd year of independence with traditional dance performances and fun activities. Over the recent months we have had a focus on driving the sale of memberships. This is not a new thing but the unprecedented levels of members leaving the club and leaving Singapore makes it a tough environment. Many of you will know of (or have benefitted from) the Member Get Member promotion and I encourage you all to think about introducing friends to the benefits of membership as we find that such new members often become the most supportive and frequent users of the club. A special Back to School Membership promotion will commence this month, in line with the start of the new academic year. Do take advantage of the referral system as you’ll receive up to 36,000 British Club Reward points (worth $720) for every successful referral. I would like to end by inviting you to the September Members Connect Night. This will be a special themed night with our new Italian pizza chef, Daniele Colaiacomo, showcasing some of his creations. More information on Daniele and the event can be found on pages 20 and 21. On behalf of the Club, I thank you for your continuous support and wish everyone a great month ahead. DAMIAN R. • GM’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, I’ll like to start by congratulating England for making it to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup, sadly we didn’t quite make it to the final but the atmosphere and turnout of Members for the live screenings were spectacular, even for games that kicked off in the wee hours of the morning. As we recover from the World Cup frenzy, I’m pleased to let you know that we have received much positive feedback for our recent Best of British events, the Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner and Cooking Demo & Lunch with Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters. Please flip through the magazine or visit our Facebook page to view the photos taken during the events. The Best of British celebrations will continue this month with Prize Bingo Night. Play for a good cause and stand a chance to win prizes such as an Apple MacBook, IPad, a drone and many more quality items sponsored by Courts. Partial proceeds from ticket sales will go to supporting our Club charities. For those looking to have a romantic time with your other half, get on-board the Sunset Sail on the Royal Albatross this September. Superbrains Inter-Community Quiz Night and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Singapore Turf Club will follow in October and last but not least, we will top off the celebrations this year with The Great British Ball on 30 November at the Shangri La Hotel. We are organising the Great British Ball in partnership with The British Chamber of Commerce and will aim to bring the British community together for an extravagant night celebrating all things British. I am delighted to introduce our new Italian Pizza Chef - Daniele Colaiacomo who joins us in August. He brings 20 years of pizza-making experience that has been forged in great restaurants all over the world, including Rome, New York, London and most recently, he worked at the Grand Hyatt in Singapore. Born in Italy, Chef Daniele first fell in love with pizza making when he was working at a pizza shop in Rome as a 17-year-old and over the years, he has honed his skills in making authentic Italian pizzas. We believe we will soon be serving the best pizza in Singapore. Join us for our Members Connect night on 6 September for an evening of all things Italian and a slice or two of real authentic Italian Pizza. During the summer months, we have been busy with various upgrades and renovations. Not least our new Kids Club which has been named “The Hangout” by the Club’s Teen Committee who have also been instrumental in guiding us in terms of design, layout and content. The old Jackpot Room and the Games Arcade have been combined to create a wonderful new space for our younger Members to “Hangout”! Join us for the great reveal on Saturday, 1 September. A huge thank you to the Members of the Teen Committee for their guidance and inspiration. For those looking to organise a party or a gathering, why not consider the delivery packages we offer at the Club? The packages feature the ever popular Indian cuisine, healthy salads, seafood, desserts and much more. See you at the Club. ANDREW CHRISTON General Manager

• COMMITTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT • 1. What is your role on the Main Committee?

Interview

Duncan n a g i l l i G c M with

I chair the Sports Committee working with the various Sports Convenors to provide a cross-section of sports activities for all the members.

2. What motivated you to join the Main Committee?

As we live in Iskandar (across the Causeway in Malaysia), the Club has become a bit of a ‘home away from home’ for my family and I when we visit Singapore for the kids various weekend sports activities. The effort the Staff and members make to ensure we are made to feel welcome and looked after motivated me to see if I might be able to help the Club further develop and grow and let other similar, like-minded families enjoy the facilities and service.

3. How long have you been a Member at The British Club?

About 24 months – only discovered this oasis late when invited as guests of the generous Mounsey family and now wonder how we managed to survive without it…suppose I owe them a beer or 2 for the intro…

4. What is your favourite spot at the Club?

In front of the big screens at Scores, with a cold drink in hand, when a sports event is being televised.

5. Which is your favourite restaurant and favourite dish at the Club?

Not surprisingly it’s Scores and you’d be hard pressed to find a better curry buffet.

6. What do you do when you are not at the Club?

I coach kids rugby, shuttle my kids between sports, parties, sleep overs, etc (like most parents I imagine) and try to squeeze in a day job and keeping fit.

7. In 3 words, how would you describe the Club?

Hospitable, Friendly and Easy.

8. How long have you lived in Singapore?

...effort the Staff and members make to ensure we are made to feel welcome and looked after...

We’ve lived in the area for nearly 8 years.

9. Where do you dine outside of the Club?

Coppola Family Pizzeria and Wine Bar in Horizon Hills Iskandar (very family-friendly and best pizzas in JB) and Laagna Barefoot Dining for the hottest curries in Singapore.

10. What is your favourite movie of all time?

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – British as can be…

11. What is your favourite band/singer?

Anything from the 80’s (sadly) that I can dance to (badly!).

12. What is your favourite sport? Interest in most sports but Rugby Union is a bit of a religion in our home.

13. What is your favourite drink?

Ice cold Magners Irish Cider.

Meet

Rajeev Singh, the Master Chef De Cuisine of the Indian Kitchen at Verandah Café

Rajeev’s journey started off in 2001, when he was introduced by his brother to come work in Singapore. Rajeev grew up surrounded by interesting spices and aromas, which would become his bread and butter today. After all, he is the 6th generation that is working as a chef and we can safely say that it literally runs in the blood. Rajeev first started off at Singapore Khalsa Association as an Indian chef. Throughout his journey there, he got used to the culture and preferences of Singaporeans. In 2003, Rajeev joined The British Club and was the pioneer batch that opened the Indian Kitchen at Verandah Café. By then, the Club did not offer any Indian cuisine and it was an opportunity to explore. Fast track 15 years later, this was one of the best decision made as the Indian food at the Club is now one of if not the most popular amongst our Members. Rajeev is happily married and is a father of two outgoing boys. During holidays breaks, he would return to India to spend time with his friends and family. When asked about his journey here, Rajeev has nothing but happiness. He had

1)

Are you a messy or a neat person?

Do not be fooled by my moustache, I’m actually a neat and tidy person.

2)

Tell us a food item that you’ll never get close to.

Burgers and fast food. They are boring and processed; not good for health.

3)

Where can we always find you at the Club?

At the Indian Kitchen, whipping up Members’ favorite Naans and Murgh Makhani.

4) What is your greatest strength or weakness?

I like to think that my friendliness helps me get to know Members and guests better, in turn building friendships and camaraderie.

5)

Nicest thing Members have said or done to you?

Many Members have given me lovely cakes and gifts during the festive season like Deepavali and I greatly appreciate their generosity!

received Singapore citizenship in 2010.

6) What will be your ideal way to spend the weekend?

Rajeev will be celebrating his 15th year at the Club this year

I like to spend my weekends cooking up a storm at the Club.

7)

Why did you decide to do the work you are doing now?

Growing up, my parents, grandparents and great grandparents have been in this industry and I guess it really did run in my blood.

and he deserves every bit of it. Well-liked by many Members, he is known for his friendliness and of course, the food he makes. Let’s find out more about Rajeev in this month’s Staff in the Spotlight feature!

14 |

THE BRITISH CLUB

• STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT •

8)

What inspires you to be better?

Members’ satisfaction makes me happy. When Members come up to me and compliment the food, it makes me happy and inspires me to do what I do.

9)

What is your favorite local dish?

Dhal, made up of mainly lentils, tomatoes, chillies and spices.

10) What is your favorite ingredient to work with? Black Pepper, a must-have in many Indian dishes. 11) What is the dish you’re most proud of?

Lamb Rogan Josh, come try it the next time you’re at the Club. I promise you will not be disappointed!

12) Tell us the secret to making the perfect Murgh Makhani.

I’m sorry but this is top secret, come work at the Indian Kitchen if you need to know! Jokes aside, Cardamom and Fennel Seeds are vital in making the perfect butter chicken.

13) Plain, butter or cheese Naan?

The most sinful cheese Naan, once in awhile..

14) Fish, chicken or mutton curry? None of the above. I prefer vegetarian curry, which really has as more flavor than the meat curries.

• MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT •

Ee Chien

How did you hear of The British Club, and what made you join the Club? I’d been looking for a club with a variety of facilities near my home to join, and had been doing a bit of research. The British Club had a host of good recommendations online, and a family friend who’s a member said the food was amazing! It fit everything I was looking for, so I figured I better join quick!

Tell us more about your role at Grab. My team works on sourcing deals in Singapore and the region, where we work with companies to simplify the payments process for the everyday consumer. I was previously at Uber running their Vehicle Solutions team, where we ran strategy and operations to give drivers the best opportunities to earn. Similarly at Grab, we’re also working on building our Grab Financial arm, that will work on helping others with their money management.

What is your favorite food at the Club? The Murg Makhani is truly heavenly. Eat that with garlic and butter naan at the side, and I’m ready for a nap after. I love how fresh the food is, and seeing the team making it at the poolside is always a welcome sight (and temptation).

How’d you get into the F&B business, and how do you balance your day job and night job?

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Ee Chien. Ee Chien joined the Club in February 2018. He is a currently working as a Senior Associate in Business Development at Grab in their payments business. He also co-owns a cocktail bar in Tanjong Pagar area called Jekyll & Hyde. We find out a bit more about Ee Chien and what is in store for him in this interview.

I’ve always wanted to get into F&B and was casually surfing on a website when I saw a listing. The funny thing is, it’s a bar that my friends and I used to go to every few weeks! I asked my colleague Hayden if he wanted to partner with me on this, and he said yes! I love their cocktails, and now can drink them all day. We do have a full-time team there, so they help us run the operations on a day-to-day basis. If any member comes and shows their membership card, we’ll be happy to give them 10% off!

Lastly, tell us what is in store for you in the upcoming months. I’ll be juggling both my “day job” and “night job.” Excited to take the bar and transform it. Also excited about the mobile payments business. I’m turning 30 this year, so I’ll be taking some trips to celebrate, including Scotland for a whisky tour!

THE FUTURE OF VERTICAL INTEGRATION AND WEALTH MANAGEMENT By David Pugh, The Fry Group The Hayne Royal Commission into Australian financial services started in March this year and will continue throughout 2018. It’s already clear that its broad remit will lead to fundamental changes in investing and finance. But how will this affect Australians living overseas, and their own arrangements for savings and investments?

Vertical integration – just what is it?

Who’s your adviser?

An early issue out of the traps is the “vertically integrated” wealth management business model. This where a business combines activities at two (or more) stages of production, which in wealth management means the firms selling savings and investment products and services also own the businesses which create those products and services. It’s a bit like IKEA designing and manufacturing the furniture in the very same stores it sells them to you.

The idea of a public register of independent advisers increases access to alternative sources of trustworthy advice. Last December, the Independent Financial Advisers Association of Australia (IFAAA) took steps towards this, by announcing that it would become a profession by submitting an application to the Professional Standards Councils (PSC). It also sought to change its name (to the Profession of Independent Financial Advisers, or PIFA) and put an occupational scheme in place to drive professional standards, including a compliance and risk management framework, complaints and discipline protocols, and a Code of Ethical Practice.

The problem with this system in wealth management is that it’s vulnerable to conflicts of interest and commission gouging. The January 2018 ASIC report on vertical integration stated that only 21% of advisers’ product lists comprised in-house products – but after receiving advice from vertically integrated firms, customers committed 68% of their investments to those in-house products. About that advice It’s also emerged in the same report that 75% of this advice was ‘noncompliant’ with existing rules governing the quality and independence of advice. So to use the same analogy, if you go to IKEA, you’re going to end up buying IKEA furniture – and you shouldn’t expect to ask the manager for their opinion on what’s on offer at Harvey Norman. This model has also produced an ‘advice gap’, where many investors shun investment advice as being too costly, so the firms end up advising only high-income investors. Also, with the big firms controlling 80% of the wealth management industry, there is a lack of choice for investors looking for quality advice.

Now, advisers able to show the right affiliations – and most importantly, a track record of impartiality – have the opening they need to compete effectively with the wealth management arms of the majors. For Australians living overseas, there has never been a better time to ensure their plans for the future, including the treatment of their superannuation and their tax affairs, are managed effectively and without undue cost by experts with a background in – and a commitment to – unbiased advice.

Where to next? These findings have led to calls for better standards and licensing for financial advisers. Better disclosure requirements have been proposed with the intention of rebuilding trust in investment advice by ensuring that the customers’ interests are prioritised over the institutions’ drive to maximise profits and shareholder value. New, greater transparency requirements in the market will alert investors to the risks of staying with particular wealth managers.

I believe that in order to create an authentic Italian pizza, one must have a combination of knowledge, passion and love. We cannot lack any of these things if we want to offer great pizza. – Daniele Colaiacomo

Meet Daniele, our new Italian Chef at the Club. Daniele’s story began in Rome, in a regular pizza shop owned by his brother. He had started working there at a time when he could not find a permanent job; and decided to help out in the shop. During the first 3 months, Daniele cut vegetables, fresh food and cleaned the kitchen; all the while observing the pizza chef work his dough magic. Daniele started experimenting and getting a feel of the dough and that’s when he fell in love. Since then, he’s made it his life’s work, churning out pizzas in Rome, London, New York and now Singapore. Since he joined Pete’s Place at the Grand Hyatt last year, Chef Daniele has refined the dough recipe and baking techniques. He joins us in August and we are excited to find out what he has in store for us.

WINE & GOURMET DINNER

with Guest Chef Paul Then

Fri, 31 Aug • 7:30pm onwards $98+ Member • $108+ Guest

Viña Agustinos, located in a privileged spot in Chile with an abundance of rivers that flow through its vineyards, was conceived to produce wines of the highest quality in a context of total sustainability. To achieve that, the company has incorporated environmentally friendly and minimally invasive practices into its processes, as well as providing constant care for its employees and their families. Viña Porta invites you to discover Chile through its best wines. The secret lies in the careful production process, including the choice of the valley, the vineyards, the harvest, production and distribution. In the 700 hectares that Porta owns in the Maipo Valley, grapes are managed with utmost care, respecting the environment and relying on local people to produce fine red and white wines that captivate the palate with their unique characteristics, elegance and flavor. Both wineries are owned by Bethwine and we are happy to have Mr Gonzalo Lattore with us this August to share these wines. Gonzalo was born into a family who owns vineyards and have been working with wines after he graduated from university. Gonzalo has been the Export Director with Bethwines, who owns Santa Alicia, Viña Porta and Viña Agustinos, for the last 14 years.

FRIDAY NIGHT HEROICS By The Boaster

Anurag, Martyn and Emma planning their next beer

Captain Andrew planning strategy

The brilliant start to the SSRA veterans’ league season has proven to be more than just a start. Under the leadership of Andrew Marshall and his consiglieri Nick Fell, team BC were an amazing second in the table at the league’s mid-point in late May, having won 5 fixtures and lost 2. Craig Telmer has been a standout player, winning 4 out of 5 of his matches, but many others have chipped in . . . Ray Kwee, Ashley Nicholas and Nick Barker were all P2 W2 and Andrew had won 3 from 4. After the mid-season break there was a disappointing loss to NUSS (who we had beaten in the first half) followed by a thumping win in the wilds of Bedok, and a loss to the Dutch who are also close to the top of the table. We are still well set for a playoff spot, and while the squad has lost two players – Matt and Neil, who both have left Singapore – it has gained two as well in Anurag and Emma. “Emma?” you ask. Yes indeed, The Boaster replies. We are thrilled to have a lady member joining the team (and she has already signed up for the Cosmo league too). In May, the section had a ladies’ night at one of the regular squash socials with Gitte, Rhiannon and Laura also joining in, and we plan to have more like it throughout the year. If you would like to join us, please get in touch with either of the conveners, Andrew or Craig. Finally, as well as saying goodbye to Matt and Neil, both fine players and stalwarts of the BC teams, we are saying a sad goodbye to Damian Glendinning. Damian has been a great friend and has served as treasurer of the section for many years, somehow achieving order from the chaos we create, and balancing the books at year end. He will be missed. We wish all of you safe travels and good squash in your new homes.

THIS MONTH, WE INTRODUCE OUR 2017 CLUB CHAMPION JOHN HANCOCK TO THE PAGE By Nic Merrow-Smith John, tell our readers what you remember most about that day in Sentosa on October 20th? Lots of rain Nic! I was amazed at how quick the greens & fairways cleared. I also remember being laid up with the man-flu..

Now John, we know that there are many would-be golfers in the Club that just need to get out on the course, can you give them some words of encouragement? I think we’ve got a great bunch of regular golfers of all abilities attending the medals, and a great team spirit in the Monday night golf league and regular matchplay competitions with other clubs.

Difficult drives, bunkers, water everywhere; what’s the secret of staying calm on such a tough course? Medication…seriously though it was the first time I’d played the course. Golfers are quite fortunate to be able to play on the same turf as the professionals, so for me I just enjoyed the moment. The Club Championship will be staged on the New Course at SICC this October, is that another course you will be playing for the first time? Never played it Nic. It is rated as the third best course in Singapore after Serapong & Tanah Merah Garden. It will also be a change for the club to host the club championship. Looking forward to it.

Participation in family golf day events is growing, so all in all I believe the section is offering lots for any keen golfer to join us out on the course, or at the bar! Lastly John, who would be in your perfect 4 ball and which course would you choose? Would have to be Seve, Faldo & Poulter.. all great Ryder Cup players! Interviewed by Nic Merrow-Smith

How do you rate your chances of a repeat performance, I know Andy Romanis will be breathing down your neck? Ha Ha! I’m sure Andy will appreciate that going into the club magazine.. I can think of a few who’ve got a very good chance of winning Nic, however with the state of my game at the moment, I’d rate my chances as very slim!

TENNIS IS LIFE, THE REST IS JUST DETAILS. by Liza Rowan Welcome back to Tennis! Based on our busy socials, competitive tournaments and team wins in national leagues before the summer, you can safely assume that this will be another ace season! There is so much going on in our lively section that it’s impossible to serve it all up here between the tramlines. Read on for a brief outline of what we have to offer, and future publications will add more spin to the specific areas within the tennis section. J (yes, it gets more corny…)

Stay Calm. Tennis on....

BC Aces U10B Winners

YOUTH TENNIS Earlier this year our Coaches introduced BC Tennis Passports to track skills and to motivate our young newcomers. It’s going so well that we’re celebrating with a club-wide Tennis Festival in September - everyone is welcome and it’s guaranteed to be quite a racket for adults and kids alike, so don’t default or you’ll miss out! Last season we had 5 teams compete in the national JTTL league and our U10Bs BC ACES came first in their Division! The kids are hoping to smash it again this time around. This is great way to introduce kids to competitive tennis - singles & doubles, as part of a team. JTTL Season 2 kicks off midSeptember and we’re sure our teams will rally their way to the Finals in November. For more information on our Youth Program, contact Kim Das, kimdas@mac.com

LADIES TENNIS Our internal ladies’ Doubles Ladder continues to serve up points with over 40 ladies participating, playing at times to suit their calendars. The commitment is to play a 3-set game once a month. If you’d like a slice of the action, please contact Lisa at lisamowleladder@gmail.com Last season we had 5 teams competing in WITS (Women’s International Tennis), with our Alpha Team, Can’ O Balls, winning their division so they bounce up to Division A! This season we have 6 teams competing across various divisions – WITS is such a social experience on and off the court, and we welcome any ladies interested to join one of our British Club teams. For more information, follow through our WITS coordinator, Janine, janinemail@iprimus.com 54 |

Kids with Stamped Passports

For experienced players, the club competes in STA (Singapore Tennis Association); if you’re up for some heavy hitting, contact Clytie, clytie@cacpolymers.com.sg Looking smart between the drop volleys and lobs is of course important, so hawk-eye the new tennis kit these ladies will be sporting this season - bringing glamour to the court! Not to ever overlook our gents and kids in the fashion stakes, they are also sporting new British Club gear this season, making it a lovematch!

MEN’S TENNIS The Men’s Ladder provides an excellent opportunity to drive & volley regular singles matches against players of similar ability. Each member can challenge anyone between 1 and 6 rankings above, and matches are arranged at times to suit you. Please contact PK prasenjit.k.basu@gmail.com for more details. The British Club enter 3 Men’s teams into each of the STA inter-club events each year, across different grades. There are usually 3 events • • •

Singles league (March-April) Doubles knock-out (June-July) Doubles league (September- October)

The club can field 15 players in each team, so there’s lots of advantage for gents who wish to play competitively. Matches take place on weekends at the British Club and at the other hosting clubs. TENNIS SOCIALS The section hosts weekly socials at the club, which you are welcome to join at any time (assuming you fit the category beforehand J ) Ladies: Monday mornings from 9am to 1pm Men: Monday evenings from 7am to 10pm Mixed doubles: Friday evenings from 7 to 10pm There are also weekend socials throughout the year e.g. parent and child, along with themed socials (Halloween costumes, Santa Red Hat social) which are great ways to meet other players and enjoy a beer or a deuce afterwards at Scores.

BC TOURNAMENTS

Sat, 1 Sep • 3pm to 6pm Sports Centre, Tennis Court 3 & 4 The British Club will be launching its first Tennis Festival this coming September. All are welcome to join us for a fun-filled afternoon! *Open to all children from the age of 4. All skill levels are welcome and no tennis experience is required.

Last season we hosted our Masters and BC OPEN Tournaments; sincere congratulations to our grand-slammers and all those who participated. We experienced some big serves and few forced errors, and loved spotting some new faces (and winners) on court. In November we host our Youth Tournament – a great chance for kids to show off their drop shots and backspin against each other and across various age groups. SOCIAL J We celebrated our successful first season with our Exhibition Match & Awards Nights – it turned out to be quite a racket (I know, sorry) with awesome tennis between coaches, awards presentations, great international buffet, music and even dancing! So, why break a winning formula! We decided on a re-match this season on Friday, 30 November and plan to outplay the performance. • SPORTS & FITNESS • FOOTBALL:

BCFC HIGH AND LOWS! By Paul Hackett With World Cup fever gripping the globe, you would expect the article to be all about the football! Not us, for us it is a more cosmopolitan affair with a number of key activities taking place that the Section have been involved with. Firstly we have had the Swimming Gala, if you can kick a ball surely it follows that we can swim!! With no practice, warm up or speedo’s the might of the BC was unleashed and it saw the mixed four rally teams [Mixed because Paddy was swimming] come home with the gold! Paddy went on to win a number of golds, mainly in the children’s age groups, but as Paddy said, “A medal is a medal” – we look forward to, “Going for Gold” again next year at what was a very good swimming event! From the water to the turf! Gary Annand, our very own “Peaky Blinder” arranged what will hopefully be our inaugural “Ladies Day at the Races”. With over 30 attendees, it proved to be a great night with new members, Mick Leaver & Gary Barr coming together the stalwarts of the Club with their other halves to enjoy a full card at the Turf Club. Thanks to Paul Summers for assisting with the arrangements, although his tips left a lot to be desired!

On the whole, some appeared more successful than others, with the Donnelly’s, Barr’s, McNamara’s and Skues appearing to look quite flush post their flutters, or was it just the free flow?? Back to the football! As we come to the end of the Season for some of the teams that we run in the various leagues, it’s with both pride and a touch of sadness that we can report that we have come 2nd in both the EFL QD and EFL PD leagues. A great achievement, but sadly not as Champions, but great to have pushed a few far younger teams all the way to the last game of the season. 56 |

Well done guys, but with new Captains in place for next season, let us hope we can push to be Champions again! We had a sad day as we said au revoir to a much-loved son of the BCFC, from a young boy, to a full-grown young man, we saw Angus leave heading for University. A last game saw him almost wrap things up with a goal, but alas no! A fitting end at Scores, saw the traditional “boat race” goodbye, followed by a quick revisit of dinner and a trophy to remind him of what he has left behind! We wish you all the best Angus!

To happier times, as the World Cup commenced, our very own Kenny Cowgill has set up the World cup ladder, a great idea from Kenny, to ensure we stay interested in the World Cup even if England ended up like Scotland, Wales and Ireland, i.e. back at home…. Early pace setters include a few surprises as we never see such abilities or tactics on the field, but Robin T, David M, Pete and Robbie Thomas head up the top spots – a long way to go, but let’s see if its ‘coming home!’

Finally, an acknowledgment to Chris, Paddy and Kenny for being instrumental in setting up the BC Youth Football academy. A real first for the BCFC and this initiative in conjunction with ISA gives members children the chance to develop their football skills and hopefully follow the likes of Angus into the first team in years to come. Come on England and remember the BCFC expects!
