GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, We have stepped into the second half of 2015. Hope you are doing great and having a lot of fun so far. This year, through the series of Best of British events, combined with the SG50 Promotion, we have over 100 new members join the Club. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members on-board. I am sure you will have a great time here with us in the Club. For food lovers, we will be having scrumptious food and beverage promotions across all outlets in the Club in August and September. Tantalise your taste buds with exquisite menu like Roasted or DeepFried Quail in Scores in August to voluptuous Brittany Lobster at the Mountbatten Room in September. In our attempt to improve and raise the standards of Food Quality and Service Consistency throughout the Food & Beverage Outlets, I have been working very closely with our Executive Chef Sunny Sia, and the operations team. As Members, I’m sure you will appreciate that at high demand times such as weekends and certain other busy periods when the restaurants are at their busiest, it is sometimes difficult to be able to meet each and everyone’s personal requests. Therefore it has been identified that at these peak periods when Members order food items from other outlets other than where they will be eating, this puts extreme pressure on both the Culinary and the Service staff to meet the Members expectations (resulting some times

Budget 2015 – Take Two
By Martin Rimmer
George Osborne delivered his first Budget of the new government on Wednesday, 8 July 2015. Free from the shackles of coalition, this was the first Conservative Budget in 18 years. Prior to the Budget, expectation was that we would see reforms to Inheritance Tax, reforms to non-domicile status, and cuts to welfare spending. What has been delivered has not disappointed on those areas, but Mr Osborne has excelled himself with vast swathes of additional measures also introduced. A number of these themes are particularly relevant to British expatriates. Taxation of Dividends If you receive dividends from shares in UK companies or funds, from 6 April 2016, a new special allowance will be introduced, allowing you to receive dividends of up to GBP 5,000 per year without a charge to Income Tax. The 10% notional credit which has applied for many years is going to be abolished, and the rates of tax on the dividends you receive (in excess of the annual allowance) will be 7.5%, 32.5% and 38.1%, depending on whether you are a Basic Rate, Higher Rate or Additional Higher Rate taxpayer. Income from Rental Property Many British expatriates rent out their UK properties and some have to file income tax returns to report rental income and expenses. From April 2016, the Wear and Tear allowance will be abolished and replaced with a new form of relief which will capture actual expenses on replacing furnishings. Allied to this is the surprising decision to change the way in which account is taken of mortgage and loan interest in the rental account. From April 2017, the ability to deduct these costs from rental income will be gradually phased out and replaced with a relief which reduces your tax liability on rental profit by no more than 20% of the amount of the mortgage and loan interest you have paid.
Martin Rimmer is a Senior Tax Manager at The Fry Group. He specialises in residence, domicile, inheritance tax planning and taxefficient wealth structuring and protection. Based in Singapore, he joined The Fry Group in 1999 and now has responsibility for Private Clients throughout South East Asia, providing bespoke UK tax planning and compliance solutions, opinions and technical briefings.
An end to non-Dom status, well, almost Anyone who has been watching the political debate about tax in the UK in recent years will know that the subject of ‘non-doms’ has rarely been out of the news. In short, this is a status which allows certain classes of UK resident taxpayers to shelter their foreign income, gains and wealth from all forms of tax, provided that certain conditions are met. From 6 April 2017, anybody who has been a resident in the UK for more than 15 of the last 20 years will be deemed to be domiciled in the UK for tax purposes.
Tel: +65 6225 0825 mail: advice@thefrygroupsg.com www.thefrygroupsg.com
Pensions The Lifetime Allowance will be reduced from £1,250,000 to £1,000,000 from April 2016. Transitional protection for pension rights already over £1,000,000 will be introduced at the same time. Together with the reforms to Pensions introduced on 6 April 2015, these measures mean that detailed advice is now almost always needed about how, when and whether to draw UK pension benefits and the options open to you when you do. Inheritance Tax In a move which will delight many, the Government will be introducing an additional nil rate band when a main residence is passed on death to direct descendants. The additional allowance will be £100,000 in 2017/18, £125,000 in 2018/19, £150,000 in 2019/20 and £175,000 in 2020/21. This will effectively raise the combined nil rate band for a couple to £1,000,000. There will be a tapered withdrawal of the additional nil rate band for estates with a net value of more than £2,000,000. The nil rate band will continue to be frozen at £325,000 until April 2021. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Member in the Spotlight In conjunction with the upcoming Rugby World Cup playing in the UK, for this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to present Rugby player, Neil Best. Neil is a rugby union footballer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He played for London Scottish and was a former player in the Irish National Team. Neil is now Singapore-based Bucks Rugby Club’s hard man and we are pleased to have him joining us as a Member of The British Club. In this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we get a glimpse of Neil’s life. What brought you to Singapore and The British Club? It was through one of your members, Claude Ringuet. I was introduced to Claude (Chariman of Bucks RFC in Singapore) through a friend. Keen to play rugby still so I agreed on assisting him with managing the sport (rugby) at the club. I became, what Claude and the General Manager Sean Boyle, had envisioned, the Rugby Ambassador. In partnership with the Club, we will be introducing a rugby section. This is timely especially with the Rugby World Cup commencing in UK soon. I am sure we will be able to garner more interest amongst Members.
You have had a splendid track record in Rugby. What motivates you to develop such a passion in this sport? I started playing mini rugby as a child from around the age of 8 and I loved the sport! This interest was further developed throughout my school career and eventually led me to playing adult rugby at the tender age of 18! It was a steep learning curve and I had to work ferociously hard on my physique. My hardwork was paid off when I earned a semi-professional contract whilst at university and eventually developed into a full time contract in the middle of my master’s degree. My passion for the game was unyielding and one of the highlights was playing for Ulster in my home province.
Being new to Singapore, have you tried and explored any local food and food haunts? I have been held up in the hotel since my arrival and been exploring the nearest hawkers at Lau Pa Sat as well as having the brunch at the Pan Pacific Hotel!
Have you tried durians? Not yet, seen them at the stalls and hearing mostly unfavourable reviews, still undecided as whether to try!
Describe a day at The British Club (for you and your family) As the family have yet to join me, I hope to spend the whole day at the Club enjoying the wonderful dining and activities that the Club offers. The children have yet learn to swim, so it would be great for them to get some instructors whilst I hit the gym and Emily has a spa treatment. Then I guess I would join them for lunch introducing the children to some local food and have a few drinks before heading back!

A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN D U R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MBIII is not like other pilot’s watches. It’s built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the MBIII is strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. Then a vibration test simulates 30 years of continuous flying. But this doesn’t mean the MBIII is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer with GMT functionality, certified 99.998% accurate by COSC, the official Swiss testing institute.

WINE & GOURMET DINNER WITH GUEST CHEF DENIS LUCCHI Friday, 28 August 2015
$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest This month, we are happy to have Guest Chef, Denis Lucchi with us. Diners can anticipate an authentic Italian cuisine pairing off with some of the best Italians wines from Veneto by Angra wine paired together with Chef Denis cuisine for the evening. Chef Denis was trained in some of the most premier restaurants in London and Rome, on top of working with celebrity chefs at a Michelin-starred restaurant in his hometown of Lake Garda. With an impressive list of distinguished Italian restaurants in Singapore such as Gattopardo and Garibaldi to boot, Chef Denis has acquired valuable and varied experiences that have positively shaped and honed his culinary skills along the way. Chef Denis is currently the Chef de Cuisine at Buona Terra and he aspires to showcase a small part of Northern Italy to diners through his interpretation of classic dishes offering a delicate balance of textures and tastes, while retaining the traditional and familiar flavours of Italy that he grew up with. He believes that Italian prepares the ‘happiest’ and ‘homeliest’ dishes because they always cook from the heart. Whether he is whipping up a delectable cuisine for his treasured customers, or for his loved ones, this remains as one of his simple cooking philosophies he intends to stay true to. SACRED HILL WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 18 September 2015
$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason with their friend and winemaker, Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wines than they could drink and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (Sacred Hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river and land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. Hawke’s Bay has a warm, temperate climate perfect for growing Chardonnay, Bordeaux blends and Syrah whereas Marlborough is a true New Zealand paradise at the northern tip of the South Island, and is the engine room of New Zealand’s wine industry. The vineyards that create our distinctive wines stretch from the Lower Wairau to the upper Awatere Valley. We are happy to have Dale Wright, Fine Wine Director for Sacred Hill Vineyards this September to share with us their distinctive wines. Dale has more than 15 years’ experience in the wine industry and joined Sacred Hill in 2012 to promote and position Sacred Hill’s brands in New Zealand, Australia and Asia.

BRITISH CLUB CHOIR
Raise your voices
Be it acapella mash-ups, military wives belting out a tear jerker or the latest Welsh male voice choir, singing is truly a moving experience for most people. With the massive success of movies like Pitch Perfect and programmes such as Britain’s Got Talent, it seems group singing is gaining in popularity. Just look at Gareth Malone, a former unknown - although highly talented choirmaster - has shot to fame hosting show after show about teaching any Tom, Dick or Harry to sing.
So, it shouldn’t surprise you to know there is a British Club choir here at the club. A group of men and women will meet up on a regular basis to sing and share their love of music through their voices - and no, you don’t have to be the next Charlotte Church to join. The rehearsals are directed by nationally acclaimed choir director, Elaine Wan Chan. Over the next two issues we’d like to introduce you to a few members of the choir and hopefully encourage more of you to join them next season as they prepare for some exciting times ahead.
Watch out for the next issue for Part 2 of the Music Section Features

SPORTS & FITNESS Golf:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith
Our Club Golfers were on the greens in May at Raffles Country Club in a three way match hosted by The American Club. We played solid golf only to hear the Tanglin Club had pipped us for the Colonial Cup on points. As a jubilant Tanglin Club side celebrated, we asked to see the team score. As it turned out, our 7th and 8th scorers had done enough to edge out the competition and bring back the cup. We will be back at Raffles Country Club as favourites to retain the Ryder Cup on 11 September. Golfers from the Club are most welcome to sign-up and join our regulars. Our Men’s Club Championship took place on 25 June. The chance to play one of Asia’s premier courses attracted a field of 34 men and 1 young lad, Thomas Lamb. With a swing of consummate grace and a very capable short game, Thomas eased his way around the Sentosa’s 6227m Serapong Course in 86 shots to become our youngest ever Men’s Champion at the age of 12. Other commendable scores were carded by James Morris (87) and Bryan Weir (88). James went on to win the Division A handicap whilst Bryan won Division B. Runner-up in their respective divisions were Thomas Lamb and Davy Yeo. Golfers were entered into a team competition with various novelty prizes to play for. With plenty of prize support, everyone came away a winner. For the record, Team Paraparaumu (captained by Mike Humphrey) won first prize and will get to play a round at Ria Bintan. They edged out Team Valderrama (captained by Oliver Stoffell) and Team Wack Wack (captained by John Bussell) in his last outing with the section. Thanks to all your support and to the support of our sponsors from Ria Bintan GC, Raffles CC, Warren GC, Orchid CC and Tering Bay GC and Palm Springs GBC in Batam for the team prizes. Individual prizes were sponsored by The Edge Bali, Urban Fairways and Marina Bay GC, with the Golf Section supplying trophies, balls and drinks. SPORTS & FITNESS SQuash:
Friday Night Heroes By The Boaster & Matt Gyde The British Club veterans’ team in the SSRA inter-club league has evolved from Frantic Fridays (in reference to the scrambling captain Matt Gyde did every week to get a team) to the Friday Night Specials. In June, they moved into the semi-finals where they met the round-robin winners - United Condos. UCSC had won all their league games 4-0 and were huge favourites, but they were not used to facing a British Club team that had been picked more than a few hours before the match. Matt played the first rubber but only after his opponent took 30 minutes to stretch before he would play. UCSC quickly took the first game but after a motivational talk from Douglas, Matt won the second and was also given permission by the referee to hit his opponent with his racket if he got in the way again (Matt’s gin-inflamed kidneys were suffering after a couple of early collisions). Possibly this unsettled UCSC and he lost the next two games and Matt and took the rubber 3-1. Next on court was the returning superstar of British Club squash, Jamie Salamon, who played a very talented UCSC #3. Jamie put in a valiant effort, chasing from the front to the back of the court on a regular basis and often surprising his opponent in getting to unplayable balls but the UCSC #3 was unfortunately just as fit and won the match 3-0. Next up at #1 was the BC 2015 star performer, Douglas Morgan. In the match of the season, both Douglas and his opponent started at a pace never before seen in the veterans’ league. Douglas took the first two games despite his lefty opponent’s almost unplayable back-of-thecourt boast. Games 3 and 4 saw Douglas take early leads but each time he was overhauled. In the 5th, at 10-8 to UCSC, Douglas surged to win 4 straight points and take the match 3-2, leaving UCSC stunned.
THE BRITISH CLUB
Finally Nick Fell entered the fray against the UCSC #4, affectionately named by his own team as Kung Fu Panda. The KFP raced through game 1 with a series of drop shots from back of the court. Nick pulled it together and grabbed the second easily. At this point, the UCSC team stopped cheering and reverted to threats against KFP and he, unfortunately, took them to heart, reintroduced his drop shots, and proceeded to win the next two games. That meant a 2-2 match score and a BC loss by 9-7 on countback. This was disappointing but we gave UCSC their hardest match of the season and almost managed the SSRA’s upset of the decade. Well played to all the team members that turned out this year. It was hard to get a team on the court on a regular basis but we did it, finished the season in 4th place and almost higher. The four who returned from the Battle of Yio Chu Kang had no medals but returned covered in glory - they did the British Club proud.

Wimbledon Social + Exhibition Match We had Federers, Murrays, Sharapovas and a couple of old-school McEnroes on court as families teamed up for our Wimbledon Parent and Child Social. After strawberries and cream and a glass of Pimms the crowd were nicely set up for another exciting Coach Exhibition Match. Darren teamed with Sam against Cyril and Dave to show us how it should be done. The (over) enthusiastic crowd produced a record number of Mexican waves.

Tip from the Pro “Match nerves affecting your play? Make sure you warm up properly, physical exercise seems to dissolve nerves! Nerves produce short, shallow breaths which are no good for oxygen flow; slow your breathing down focusing on the rhythm of your breath. If you feel nervous adapt your game and play conservatively – aim for high percentage shots and good net coverage. That way you are likely to make fewer mistakes and boost your morale.” Darren Moore, BC Director of Tennis.

Barracudas Summer Party By Emma Thomas
Amazing! For the first time, the Barracudas party hit over 100 party goers. Congratulations to everyone in helping your team moving from strength to strength. We had fun and games. Swimming, for the young ones, is not just about the swimming. There are a lot of secret tactics and great leadership skills involved in winning these races whether you are 6 or 16, everyone had to play their part. This is one of the great things about swimming. You can start at birth and carry on throughout your whole life. So back to the party‌followed by all the fun games, it was on to the more serious stuff of giving out prizes and awards (and of course eating the sweets and ice creams). Congratulations to all those swimmers that achieved such great accomplishments over the past 6 months. Rather than reading any more, I hope that the following photos give everyone an idea of the great atmosphere, fun and excitement had by all. We can’t go without saying a sad farewell to all the families leaving this summer. You will be missed by your coaches, team mates and friends. Go Barracudas!! THE BRITISH CLUB

The St. James’s Club has a rich and fascinating history dating back to 1857 and although we have changed our home and décor several time since then we still take great pride in maintaining the traditions of service, comfort and hospitality of our illustrious forebears. Our 5 star boutique hotel in London is located, in a quiet cul-de-sac that is only moments from Mayfair, Buckingham Palace and St. James’s Palace, the exclusive shops of Jermyn Street, the Burlington Arcade, Bond Street, The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and only a short stroll from the theatres and night life of the West End. Next are our luxurious, beautifully furnished and superbly comfortable bedrooms, some with private balconies. Choose one of our deluxe suites or, for the ultimate in luxury, our superb Penthouse with its private rooftop terrace. Try our restaurant, Seven Park Place, awarded a Michelin star for the fourth time in October 2013 where wellknown English chef William Drabble’s cuisine reflects his love of modern French style food made using the best British seasonal produce.
Exclusive for our Reciprocal Club Members Special Summer rates starting at £230 (S$345) at the St. James’s Hotel and Club with complimentary Continental Breakfast.
