• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE •

Dear Members, I am pleased to report that we had a successful 36th Annual General Meeting, held at the end of November. A good deal of information about the Club was provided to those gathered in the Elizabeth Suite and some constructive discussion ensued. Nine members were nominated and will form the Main Committee for the coming year. If you look at the information below, you may notice that there has been a degree of shuffling of the responsibilities of those on the Committee. The Main Committee and management team have already started work on revisions to our strategy and approach in various areas and the various sub-committees have resumed their program of meetings.

and Gourmet dinner, featuring wines from France, and a Valentine’s Day dinner at Mountbatten Bar and Grill on the 14th. You may be aware that we host a Members Connect Night on the first Thursday of every month. Weather permitting, this event takes place at the Treetops Terrace, which is a fabulous venue overlooking our lovely grounds and with commanding views of the surrounding parts of Singapore (great for a function or private party). Members have the opportunity to network as well as meet the Main Committee and the Management team over a few drinks and light bites. Come along and join us at this event which is open to both new and current Members alike.

With the Christmas festivities behind us, now is the time to get back into sport and make I wish you a healthy and prosperous Lunar full use of the outdoor and gym facilities at New Year. the Club. I’m sure there are many out there with New Year’s resolutions to fulfill! DAMIAN R. HILLS

Amos is filled with an almost child-like joy and exuberance and can find the funny in some of the most unexpected places. A gifted actor, Amos has impressed audiences and critics with his performances on stage and screen and has proved not only a gift for comedy but also for more serious roles. Comfortable as a performer, presenter, actor and guest there is no doubt that Amos will retain his position as one of the UK’s favourite comedians for a long time to come. As seen and heard on Live At The Apollo, BBC Radio 4, ITV, ABC, Channel 4 and at festivals and gala events worldwide.

SCOTT MITCHELL Scott Mitchell is a proud Permanent Resident of Singapore. Originally from Scotland, he moved to The Lion City long ago (way before MBS existed and even before Clarke Quay had a roof). Father of 4, he shares tales of his family life, foreign adventures and the contrast of daily life in the tropics compared to his childhood in Bonny Scotland.

MATT CHALMERS Matt burst onto the comedy scene fairly recently and has been wowing audiences with his disarming nervous charm ever since. Hailing from Glasgow, via the Middle East, he has performed in the UK, USA and South East Asia. It is rare gem of a comedian that hits the scene ready to go - Matt is one of those comedians.

Top 5 will planning facts

By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group

Making a will can be challenging at the best of times – but it’s vital for British expats to have a will covering assets in the country where they live and work. A UK will may suffice where you are domiciled, and under the Colonial Probates Act 1892, some ex-colonial countries’ wills can be resealed in the UK and vice versa – but you should take local advice in any non-UK jurisdiction where you hold real estate. With these complexities in mind, British Expats should consider five basic planning points.

1. Mirror or Mutual Wills

4. Forced Heirship

A mirror will replicates another will between parties, usually one a husband and wife agree to. These wills are drawn under matching terms so that spouses leave everything to each other. The mutual will is a binding agreement between spouses which prevents the survivor changing their will later. It is useful where parties are in second marriages and want to ensure their children from previous marriage(s) still benefit. We would discourage using mutual wills, simply because the circumstances of the beneficiaries and testator can change over time.

2. The Survivorship Clause Commonly, a clause is inserted into a will stating, ‘provided that […] survives me for a period of twenty-eight days’. This results in each estate passing as though the other party had already died. But, in such disastrous circumstances as simultaneous deaths of spouses/civil partners who die together instantly, then for UK inheritance tax purposes the older spouse’s estate can escape UK inheritance tax completely by specifically excluding the survivorship clause applying.

Many countries have ‘forced heirship’ rules which direct how assets must be distributed on death. Similarly, in many countries the distribution follows Shariah law. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, non-Muslims can register a will locally at the Dubai International Financial Centre, allowing them freedom to distribute their estate as they wish.

5. Deed of Variation

To distribute assets in a more tax-efficient way, a variation to a will can be made after death by all the beneficiaries but must clearly indicate the changes that are the subject of the variation. It must be made within two years of the person’s death and all beneficiaries who lose out under the Deed must agree.

Living and working overseas creates new complexity to planning your will – with foresight and good advice, this needn’t be a challenge for you or your family.

3. Brussels IV

Some civil law countries such as France have set inheritance rules. The EU Succession Regulation (Brussels IV) was introduced within agreeing EU member states (the UK, Ireland and Denmark did not sign up) with the intention of applying one law and one jurisdiction to each individual. Importantly, it is possible to choose the law of your nationality to apply to your estate. A declaration in your will can bring this into effect – otherwise the inheritance rules in that particular country may be applied to your assets there. Also see 4 below.

Interview

with

Adr ian Water ton 1. What made you join The British Club?

8. What do you do in your free time?

Moving to Singapore, we wanted to join a ‘community’ where the family could hopefully, and quickly socialise, and as a source of weekend entertainment. The Club came out on top compared to others we toured – right choice!

Not much of that but usually on my boat or with the Skipper (American Spaniel!)

2. How long have you been a Member at Club?

9. What kind of cuisine do you enjoy the most? I’m pretty much a carnivore so meats – traditional British dishes closely followed by Asian or Middle Eastern influences.

14 years.

3. Share with us, the different roles and challenges you have had as a Main Committee Member. My first Subcommittee attendance as a Member was External Affairs (no longer a Committee), followed by Finance. As Chairman, I have chaired Food & Beverage and then mainly Human Resource. I’ve been on the Main Committee for 13 years (gulp!), apart from a 6 month or so sabbatical a few years ago.

10. What is your favourite movie of all time? Dark Star – totally mad, low budget but a cult movie.

11. What is your favourite band/singer? Led Zeppelin closely followed by Metallica.

12. Fish and Chips or Bangers and Mash? Fish and Chips.

4. Share with us your most memorable experience or 13. What is your favourite sport? Rugby. happening at the Club. That would probably be meeting Prince Andrew when he came to the Club some years ago, or when I had the great honour to 14. What is your favourite local dish? be awarded as a Life Member in 2017. Pork Char Siu. 5. Describe the Club in 3 words.

15. What inspires you to be better?

Comfortable, relaxing and engaging.

We’re (probably) only here once so take opportunities and make the most of it.

6. What can we expect for the Club in 2019? More of the same aspects we enjoy already as a Member. For the Club, there’s always challenges (increasing Membership, renovation and entertainment projects, looking after our staff and Members) – a lot has happened each year so far and 2019 won’t be any different!

16. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. Before entering the medical industry, I had set up child trauma clinics in Kosova and Serbia during the Balkan war.

7. Which is your favourite dish at the Club? Depending on mood, it has to be Murg Makhani from the Tandoori Kitchen or Shepherd’s Pie up in Windsor Arms.

If you are interested to know more or to join any of the subcommittees, please email enquiries@britishclub.org.sg

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature

ng u F l e c r a M y l i m a f s i h and

How did you find out about the Club, and what made you join? When we first arrived in Singapore from London back in 2016, we wanted to find a good Club to join so we can socialize and get to know more people. Also, it is great to mingle with a community reminiscent of our time back in the UK.

Describe your typical day at work. I usually wake up at the same time as baby Milly and spend some time with her before heading to work. As I am a general dentist who has special interest in complex dentistry, I get to do all types of treatment ranging from braces, dental implants to full mouth rehabilitations. Therefore, every day is a different experience for me.

Which do you recommend for the vain – Invisalign or braces, and why? I would say definitely Invisalign for those who are vain and want to hide their treatment. However, it is not for everyone, and so traditional braces are still a good option. These days you can have combination treatment to speed things up… so yes, definitely a lot of choices out there.

How do you spend your free time and what interests do you have? (We heard you like Salsa!)

Marcel recently joined the Club in December last year. He is currently working as a Dentist at London Dental Care. Read on to find out more about Marcel, his profession, and Salsa!

Apart from work, Sally and I love our fitness routine. We try to squeeze in gym, a round of golf (every week), rock climbing, pilates and sometimes, salsa dancing. As we both schooled and lived in the UK for a long time, we love a pint from time to time. These days, baby Milly has taken priority so we tend to drink less… more quality than quantity! Hopefully we will find more like-minded individuals in the Club!

• CLUB FEATURE •

Concerned your child may have ADHD? Dr Leo Hamilton, Senior Doctor at IMC Paediatric reviews all the key questions around ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

What is ADHD? It is a condition, not a disease. It likely just describes how certain people are – not everyone is made to sit still in school or focus on homework for hours. It’s also not just too much movement and energy – it can appear as losing focus and seeming to “daydream.”

Why treat it then? It is a problem because if you can’t focus well enough, it may affect school work and friendships.

Is it common? Yes, more than one in twenty children will be diagnosed with ADHD. In the USA, more than one child in ten will be diagnosed by age 18.

Does a three year old who won’t stop moving have ADHD? Probably not. ADHD should not be diagnosed in a child under 4 years old because hyperactivity and poor attention spans are very normal.

So how is it diagnosed? Not every overactive or daydreaming child has ADHD. The best way to make a diagnosis is a questionnaire for parents and teachers to fill out. Ask your child’s pediatrician for the forms if you think you need an evaluation done.

If your child has ADHD, does he/she always have to take a medicine? No, especially with younger children. Medications seem not to be very effective the younger you are, and working with a child psychologist produces better results. Many teenagers can learn coping skills and not need to take anything long-term.

14 |

THE BRITISH CLUB

So why take a medicine at all? Many older children and teenagers with ADHD are already having problems in school, or with maintaining friendships. The medications can help immediately, but coping skills and counselling takes time. Some people, especially teenagers, can start to believe they are not capable of succeeding in school, and taking a medicine can work in just a few days to show that they are able to do more than they believe.

What are the medications? Singapore is very limited in choices, and the primarily medication here is methylphenidate (sold as Ritalin, Concerta, or Medikinet). The lack of choices is a problem for some, but methylphenidate has been proven to be the best first choice and is recommended for everyone as initial treatment.

Are there any benefits to having ADHD? Yes, it appears people with ADHD have better multi-tasking skills as adults. If you are concerned or would like to discuss this further please reach out for support. Dr Leo Hamilton is a US trained Paediatrician based at IMC Paediatric T: 6887 4440 or visit www.imc-healthcare.com

Meet

Daniele Colaiacomo

the man behind the delicious pizzas at the Club! Daniele’s journey started 22 years ago, back home in a humble pizza shop opened by his brother. Having just left school, Daniele found himself looking for a direction. That’s when he started working at his brother’s shop. After a period of time of familiarisation, and with the Chef leaving the restaurant, Daniele took over as the Chef. All this time, Daniele worked with an electric oven, but always found himself wanting to learn the true authentic wood baking technique. In 2002, he left the comfort of his brother’s restaurant and embarked on a journey to the center of Rome. There, he found himself a job smack in the middle of the busiest region of Rome. A typical day saw the shop churn out over 400 pizzas, and things were not easy at the start. Amidst the chaos, through hard work and his passion for pizzas, Daniele mastered the techniques and gained confidence. Being someone who believed in constant learning, Daniele did not stop there. He then started to study about the ingredients and process to making the perfect dough. During the interview, Daniele also emphasised that although dough making may look simple, it is actually the key to a great pizza. “The lightness of the dough, and how digestible it is, is what’s needed to make you an excellent pizza” – Daniele. Through his journey from Italy to Rome, then New York and London, Daniele ended up in Singapore, where he met his beautiful wife – Esther. They now have a very active boy aged 2, and are expecting a baby girl in May! Find out more about Daniele, his pizzas, and his journey so far.

• STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT •

1)

How long have you resided in Singapore?

9)

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

12 Years.

2)

What do you like about Singapore?

I love 9 ball pool and used to play a lot. These days, my focuses are on work, and my super active two-year- old boy so I can only reminisce…

I love how it is an easy-going and safe place, especially suitable to raise a family in. The weather, however, is another story...

3) How have the last 5 months been at the Club?

Amazing. I feel blessed and happy to have been given the opportunity to work at the Club. I’ve received great response and feedback, and that gives me satisfaction for doing what I do.

4)

How many pizzas do you make a day?

It varies from day to day but it can range from 40 to 120 or even more! It is usually much busier over the weekends.

5)

What’s your all-time favourite pizza flavour?

It has to be Margherita. The pizza is very simple and consists of only 3 ingredients, but is the perfect pizza to tell whether the Chef is good at what he is doing.

6)

Give us a tip (or two) to making the perfect pizza.

A combination of knowledge, passion and love. There is no correct recipe, and every oven is different. Adapting and temperature control are also important. Don’t forget fresh and authentic ingredients from Italy, a must for me!

7)

White or red sauce?

I cannot choose one. Simply because different ingredient works differently for each sauce. We recently introduced a new pizza flavour – Trevigiana, consisting of the unconventional combination of gorgonzola, red chicory, mozzarella and fresh pork sausage. Have you tried it?

8)

Favourite ingredient to work with?

All fresh and authentic ingredients.

10) What do you do in your free time?

Any free time I get, I spend with my family. These days, my boy is getting more and more active so he is quite a handful.

11) What is the craziest pizza request you have ever received?

Believe it or not – Sambal Chilli, Mozzarella Cheese, Ikan Bilis and Pineapples. Nasty I know..

12) Tell us more about your new sweet pizza creation. I wanted to create something different, aside from all the savouries. Something that can be enjoyed as a snack or dessert to end the meal with. That’s when I created the Nutella pizza because who doesn’t like Nutella?!

13) What is your favourite local dish?

I used to work at East Coast and there was an amazing Hokkien Mee store there. I could eat $20 worth of Hokkien Mee at one go!

14) Favourite band or singer?

Queen, Freddie Mercury and Rock & Roll. Gallileo, Figaro, Magnifico.

15) Do you have a Chef that you admire, and why? Gabriele Bonci. To me, he is the greatest pizza creator ever. He combines the best ingredients with the perfect light dough, and I aim to reach his calibre one day.

16) Dough kneading, long hours and hot temperatures, it is hard work. What keeps you going?

Every day, I wake up asking myself how I can improve. The passion and hunger keeps me going.

TENNIS SECTION REPORT By Liza Rowan

Are you ready for another great year of tennis at the Club? During 2018, your tennis committee worked hard to provide more social opportunities for you to play tennis with fellow members and friends in the section. The throwback photos to the end of 2018 show just some of these occasions: 1) The WITS Social where ladies across all divisions formed 4 teams of mixed level players and had a very competitive, fun and social morning of tennis. Ladies got the opportunity to play with and against other members they may not have had previously met, and it was a chance to put faces to many names - proving that fun and challenging play is possible with members of all levels. 2) Our annual Red Hat social on December 1st which is always a popular event prior to many members heading away for the Festive Season. As usual, after a few hours of play, Scores provided the very best of homemade British mince pies and whipped cream which were devoured as we raised our glasses for continued Christmas cheer and to the beautiful game of tennis! 3) The Coaches Exhibition and Youth Awards Night, where we were privileged to watch our coaches battle against each other in singles (in a friendly way, of course!) and were then joined by two of our youth players, Callum and Elena, for some doubles match-play. Many of our kids got the chance to be Ball boys and Ball girls for the event which they took very seriously while doing a great job. The Youth Awards ceremony followed, whereby awards were presented to all kids involved in our various youth competitive programs.

we encourage you all to get involved. We believe that our tennis section is a club within a club, offering so many great opportunities for players of all levels to participate in social and competitive play. As always, we welcome your suggestions and involvement in creating these events – we are a section run by members, for members, so the more you put in…

Your tennis committee will continue to word hard so that 2019 brings many more of such social events and, of course,

On behalf of the tennis committee, Liza

Wishing you all health and happiness in 2019 and beyond!

INTRODUCING THE 2019 SQUASH COMMITTEE

By Craig Telmer

Milton Berle is quoted as saying that “A committee is a group that keeps minutes and loses hours”. That is certainly true at squash committee meetings where free beer is provided. Squash has always believed that “all hands make light work” and when we ask someone to sit on committee, we refer to this as “conscription”. The 19 senators for 2019 are as follows:

In our constant effort to attract younger players to our squash section, this year we decided to go with pictures from our youth. The squash section will buy a jug of beer to the first squash player who correctly identifies our 19 committee members.

• SPORTS & FITNESS • CRICKET:

CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Paul McNee It was a rain interrupted finish to the cricket season as the wet season impacted the last few games. The highlight, playing wise, was a great win against Cargill which gave the British Club the De Souza Cup 2 wins to 1. It was a solid batting performance from the BC that saw us scoring 7/225 off 30 overs with Mark Prendiville top scoring with 40 and Paul McNee hitting 3 consecutive sixes of the last over as he raced to 35 not out off 17 balls. Our bowlers then rolled Cargill for 55 with Anton Stanish leading the way with an incredible 5/16 (including a hatrick!) The other highlight of the year end was our end of year dinner, which was held in the Treetops terrace at the Club in the last week of November. The evening went off very well and I would like to thank Kurt and the staff who worked on the night for their assistance and hard work in arranging everything. BC Veteran, Todd Buck took out the leading batsman award, while departing Kiwi (he will be missed) Kimble Willis took out the leading bowler award. Other awards went to Gaurav Lakhanpal and Aton Stanish for the brilliant efforts in taking hatricks during the season (2 hatricks in one year must be a BC first) while Neil Walmsley took out the ‘Best new talent award’. By the time this goes to print, season 2019 will be under way. For anyone looking to enjoy some fun both on and off the field playing cricket, please feel free to drop us an email at cricket@ britishclub.org.sg or check out our Facebook page (we can add you) “British Club Cricket Team Singapore”. All the best to everyone for 2019!
