CLUB NEWS

FAREWELL FOR MARIANNE PAISLEY The Main Committee was delighted recently to bestow upon outgoing Committee Member, Mrs Marianne Paisley, a Life Membership in appreciation of her loyal service and contribution to the Club over the years. This news was delivered to her by none other than Club Town Crier, Mr Sean Boyle (and General Manager of the Club) at the Fullerton Hotel where her friends hosted for her a farewell lunch. Mrs Paisley was very surprised and indeed very happy to receive this accolade. She was a Club Member for 15 years, serving 7 years on the Main Committee and Chairman of the Activities & Events Committee. We look forward to welcoming her and her family back to the Club for a visit soon and having her see her name on the Life Members’ Board at Reception.

THE BRITISH CLUB

Preparing for a move to the UK By Martin Rimmer All things considered, Singapore probably isn’t where you intend to live permanently. So, it stands to reason that most British expats end up moving back to the UK sooner or later. The reasons are wide and varied, such as children’s education, retirement or just a change of pace.

If you know you will probably move back at some point, it is worth getting a sense the tax and financial issues involved. In the midst of packing, address changes, leaving parties and general arrangements, it is easy to overlook sensible financial planning, and there is potentially a lot of tax to be saved by proper planning.

such as investment properties, share rights and life assurance investments.

Existing Assets We also need to think carefully about what assets you have and what the UK tax implications of these might be. When I say assets, I mean property, investments, savings plans, life assurances, pension rights, accumulated share and bonus rights and cash deposits. It is very important to get a handle on the tax treatment of your current assets. For example, some foreign investments have quite a benign treatment for tax purposes, such as shares in non-UK companies, cash reserves and certain types of property. Others can be more complicated,

Plan ahead All in all, it is important to plan early and to get a sense of where you might stand if you have to move back to the UK. One further piece of advice - don’t be daunted! Although planning like this does seem a little bit involved, we are here to help and can take the pain out of all aspects of your UK tax and wealth planning affairs. You are likely to make the move to the UK just once. We have made it thousands of times with clients over the years and have the benefit of all of these experiences to make the process as painless and rewarding as possible for you.

Use Tax Efficient Structures Careful use of vehicles such as pensions, trusts and life assurance bonds in your strategy will leave you in a much better net position than if you pursued the same investment strategy without. It is not uncommon to be able to produce a burden to tax of less Understand when tax residence is likely to be triggered It is important to understand the law determines when you than 5% on six digit levels of income produced by a properly become resident (and subject to tax) in the UK, not you! There managed tax-efficient investment strategy. are five circumstances in which tax residence in the UK can be triggered. If you don’t fit into one of these, you will be subject to Not of British Origin tax in the UK on your world-wide earnings, incomes and gains If you or your spouse are not of British origin there are some from 6th April prior to your move. With this in mind, it is worth excellent tax planning opportunities, which allow you to shelter getting acquainted with the five ‘cases’ and planning to make foreign incomes, gains and wealth from taxation in the UK. All of this requires advance planning of course. sure you fit into at least one of them.

People in the UK are already talking about the success of last year and many companies are now looking to sponsor the Best of British 2014. As you are all aware that Singapore is one of the most happening places in the world so please do not ever take that for granted. What a wonderful place this is! It is exciting and innovative with many opportunities for everybody in the world. Families are safe here, children have a wonderful life and for someone who lives in England you will see the wonderful facilities at the British Club, so please do not take it for granted. I promise you this is one of the top Clubs around the world, and I am proud to be associated with it. Sean, his team and myself are working towards making the Best of British, bigger and better for this year. Would this year be quite different as we had such wonderful functions in 2013? It was breathtaking to see the ladies at the Grand Finale in such elegant gowns. What a wonderful evening it was. To top it this year, we have planned something that will be the talk of town!

Interesting shirt, Pete. Are you giving us a clue about this year’s themed dinner?

Guests at the Sports Evening in 2013 did not want it to end. I interviewed the football legends who talked about their journeys through the life of football. It was quite magnificent! Who will be our legends for this year? We will wait and see.

We have many new sponsors coming on board and if you have an interest, this will be your last chance to get involved. I am thrilled to be allowed to write in the magazine as a buildPlease get in touch with Shakila Samuel at 6410 1111 or up to the Best of British 2014. Shakila@britishclub.org.sg. LUIS FELIPE EDWARDS Wine & Gourmet Dinner Friday, 28 February | 7.30pm

The history of Viña Luis Felipe Edwards (LFE) dates back to 1976, when Luis Felipe Edwards Sr. purchased the Fundo San José de Puquillay estate, located in the Colchagua Valley, a premier viticultural region in Chile. The estate sits nestled in a secluded horseshoe-shaped valley, separated from the majestic snow-capped Andes by the smaller San Fernando ridge. At that time, it was planted with 60 hectares of vines dating back from the beginning of the 20th century, consisting mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carmenere and Merlot. In the early Nineties, Luis Felipe Sr. decided to make wine under his own name and so built a modern winery equipped with the latest state of the art technology. The first vintage, Luis Felipe Edwards Cabernet Sauvignon 1994, was launched on the international market in late 1995 and is still drinking well to this day, a testament to the level of quality of LFE wines since day one. Viña Luis Felipe Edwards has since grown to be the largest 100% family-owned wine company in Chile, with 1850 hectares of estate vineyards and is exported to more than 70 countries; two generations are actively involved in keeping the brand synonymous with quality and traditional family values. Luis Felipe Sr. is an integral part in the company, and his son, Luis Felipe Edwards Jr., is the Managing Director. We are happy to have Nick Tullett from Luis Felipe Edwards Wines of Chile with us to share with us their wines. Luis Felipe Edwards is currently the 4th largest Chilean producer and without a doubt, one of Chile’s most progressive and highly awarded wineries.

SPORT & FITNESS Golf:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nicholas Merrow-Smith Golf Section Barbecue Friends and family joined us to enjoy a pleasant evening beside the pool. The food and wine flowed as we enjoyed the larger terrace area by the pool side, then a hush as our convener Jonathan stepped up to announce the winners of the day and summarize the overall standings for the year.

With the final round of 2013 complete, our three surviving challengers, (from left to right) Dave, Douglas and Nic, tentatively pose behind the 18th green, each unsure whether he has done enough to clinch the Race To The Sarojin.

The year has passed and what a year we had; with wonderful sponsors, some great courses and even greater golf. I stand to be corrected, but I don’t believe we had a single medal game rained-off in 2013. And by the time this article reaches you and weather permitting, our season will be underway with social evenings at Urban Fairways in January and our January Medal at Warren Golf & Country Club. The golf section is grateful for the continued sponsorship and support of The Sarojin and Urban Fairways. December Medal And so we gathered on a potentially fateful day in December, at the height of monsoon season, for the last medal game of the year and the conclusion to our Race To The Sarojin. On Friday the Thirteenth, in the thirteenth year of the new millennium, the sun shone just long enough over Orchid Country Club for a field of 20 golfers to complete their final competitive rounds of the year in near perfect conditions. Permutations on the possible Champion and winner of the Race To The Sarojin, lead to the three challengers; Dave Kempton, Nic Merrow-Smith and Grant Douglas, teeing off together in the final flight.

The December Medal was won by Angus Maxwell with 37 stableford points who had just edged out Grant Douglas on 36 points. The nearest the pin awards were well earned given the tricky pin positions and were picked up by Nigel Spry and Oliver Soffel. Longest drive was won by Grant Douglas with a marvelous drive that was well over 250 metres. Stressing the possible permutations; that in order to displace Dave who led the table in the Race To The Sarojin, Grant had to win today (which he almost did) and Nic had to beat Dave (which he did) by 6 points (which he didn’t), Jonathan went on to announce the results of the year-long challenge. Dave Kempton who had played steady golf all year, emerged the overall champion with 68 points accumulated to Nic MerrowSmith’s total of 66 points, with Grant Douglas in third place on 60 points. Dave had therefore retained the title he had won in 2012. Then in act of outstanding sportsmanship and generosity, Dave Kempton declared that he would relinquish the grand prize which he had already enjoyed by winning the Race To The Sarojin in 2012 . He went on to ask if Nic would accept the prize as runner-up, which he gratefully did. The evening concluded with thanks and acknowledgements to our main sponsors Andrew and Kate Kemp from The Sarojin, who attended the function and Dilip Ghosh of Urban Fairways. The golf section has great support with 39 section members scoring points in the Race To The Sarojin during the 2013 season.

With the rest of the field fighting for minor prizes, Dave set off to nail home his advantage with some straight driving during a composed front nine. As we were playing off the white tees, Grant was able to make easy work of the short par 5’s, picking up birdies on no less than three, only failing on the fourth by knocking a glorious drive straight down the middle and in to a hazard crossing the fairway at the 265 meter mark. With obvious signs of a heavy night before clouding his judgement, he fished his ball out of the water. Grant soldiered on the back nine, popping pills to steady his swing whilst Dave floundered in a few of the bunkers and Nic kept the pressure on with some solid iron play. We completed our rounds as a tropical downpour threatened, but without a true sense as to whether any of us had done enough to win the competition. We returned to a deserving Tiger on the terrace where score cards were checked and the results computed. They would be announced back at the Club later in the evening during our barbecue.

Subscription Fee Increase and USGA Handicap Index

The Golf Section has raised the monthly subscription fee from $8 to $12. This is mainly to cover the cost of administering a handicap system for our competitions provided by an organization; myscorecard.com. The committee will use this system to provide members of the golf section who do not have an official handicap, with a USGA Handicap Index. The committee see this as the first step towards our members gaining an official USGA Handicap which would be sought by the Golf Section joining an affiliated club such as the Singapore Golf Association who manage the SGA National Handicap Book.

Welcome Gavin Kramer, Golf Convener

We warmly welcome Gavin Kramer as the 2014 Golf Convener, taking over from Jonathan Woodward who remains on the committee. Thank you Jonathan on behalf of the Golf Section, for your hard work in 2013. If you would like to get more involved in the golf section, Gavin is your first point of contact.

SPORT & FITNESS SWIMMING:

Barracudas Squad Report By David Green

There is no question that The British Club Barracudas swimming squad had an outstanding 2013 swimming season. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the swimmers for their continued participation in coaching and in competitions, to all the parents who ferry, cajole, support and volunteer, to our Total Swimming coaches who plan and execute the week-long coaching programmes and organise and execute the weekend galas and to all of our own British Club staff who coordinate bookings, setup and help host visiting teams, run our in-house galas and maintain the swimming pool in perfect condition. Thank you all. We sometimes forget that swimming is a life skill first, a form of fitness second and a competitive sport third. I am firmly of the opinion that anything encourages youngsters to become strong swimmers should be applauded and encouraged. The British Club runs a comprehensive swimming training programme for children and adults of all ages and ability. For the youngest children we start with Infant programme, move on to Toddler and the finish with the Preparatory programme. Children then move onto the 7-stages of Learn To Swim. From there, progression is first into the Developmental Squad followed at the appropriate time by a move into the PreSquad. The final step for those with the skills and interest THE BRITISH CLUB

is to become a competitive swimmer as a member of the Barracudas Squad. We are for tunate that the climate in Singapore makes competitive swimming realistic and an enjoyable yearround activity and I would like to take this opportunity to recognise some of the individuals who represented the British Club at outside events and excelled as Barracudas squad swimmers in 2013. Although we announced the winners and handed out awards, medals and trophies at a ceremony on Thursday 12 December 2013 at our end of year party, the accomplishment of these swimmers merits wider recognition. Many of the awards are presented to those swimmers who excel competitively in their sport and who through their participation and achievement make everyone at the British Club proud. Well done to all of you who won in competitions but also to those who par ticipated, improved in your swimming, beat your previous personal best records and had fun. I would also like to highlight those swimmers – medal winners or not - who make an equally important contribution through their dedication, their determination and their attitude - they are a great example to others.
