PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
MAIN COMMITTEE
(AS AT THE TIME OF PRINT)
We are fast approaching the last month of the year and Christmas is always a busy and
Steve Settle
fun period to be at the Club.
President
At the time of writing this report, we are a couple of weeks away from the Annual General Meeting. It has been my privilege to have served you for a second year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Members for their support to both myself and my fellow committee members. It has been a good year for the Club and I believe we have achieved a lot to be proud of. Sadly
Shaun Matheson Chairman of Ways & Means Committee
Tony Quek Chairman of Activities & Events and Marketing Committee / Disciplinary Committee
Damian Hills Honorary Treasurer / Chairman of Finance Committee
I cannot fail to mention that, as many of you will know, the year ended with the

tragic death of Richard Shaw, our InfoComm chairman. He will be missed by all

who knew him and our hearts go out to those he left behind. Please keep the Club in mind when making plans for the festive season, as we promise to make this Christmas and New Year an unforgettable and memorable time for you, your family and guests. For gastronomic indulgences, Members will be treated to festive delights at all our Food & Beverage outlets and will be spoilt for choice. If you are looking for gifts for your loved ones, why not visit the Windsor Shop and select from a wide range of items, from British Christmas

goodies, hampers to wine and champagne. Andrew Moore
By the time you read this we would have concluded our annual Swimming Gala. Swimming remains one of the top sports in the Club particularly for the youngsters. I thank the organising committee, parent volunteers, our announcer Tony Melero and all who continue to make this a successful event for all the swimmers. Don’t forget to bring the children to meet Santa this December on Saturdays 6 and 13 December or join our yearly Christmas Pantomime, where Aladdin will be visiting on Sunday, 7 December. For the ladies, mark your diaries for an all-girls night out on Wednesday, 10 December. The festive supplement in the magazine provides more details, there is something for everyone this Christmas. Whilst we enjoy the year-end festivities, please do not forget those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Members can make a difference by picking a Wish Star from our main tree at reception to fulfil the wishes of a child from the Riding of the Disabled Association or alternatively make a donation through your Club account to the Gurkha Welfare Trust. They really do need and appreciate our support. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015.

GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, In the coming weeks, our Chefs and service team will be busy preparing for the busiest time of the year at the Club. It’s probably also the happiest time in my opinion as we bring smiles on the faces of young children seeing Father Christmas for the first time, families enjoying their first Christmas in Singapore or parents and children just enjoying their Christmas break by the poolside. Whatever you decide to do, there is plenty going on at the Club. Get ready to indulge your taste buds in our scrumptious pre-Christmas specials offerings at our Food & Beverage outlets and do take the opportunity to try out the new menu at The Windsor Arms. It is part of our continued efforts to provide authentic British food to our Members. As mentioned by the Club President in the preceding page, the Club will be organising a fantastic line-up of festive activities and events; definitely, there is something for everyone! This year, we are bringing two New Year Eve’s parties for you to choose from. For families, usher in the New Year with a bang at the Pirates themed family countdown party hosted at the Verandah Café. For a night of glitz and glamour, Members can look forward to the Masquerade Dinner & Ball at The Elizabeth Suite, for adults only. Take advantage of the early bird promotions which have been extended till 12 December for some fantastic savings. When I look back on 2014, I can proudly say that it has indeed been another successful and eventful year for the Club. We have hosted a successful round of Best of British celebrations in June, following that, a great Peranakan Night in September, and winning numerous awards including The Exclusive Club of the Year 2014 from the National Critics’ Choice and Leadership in Customer Focus award from British Chamber of Commerce’s 15th Annual Business Awards. All these would not have been possible without the dedicated hard work of the staff and as your General Manager, I write to ask for your donation towards the annual Hong Bao Fund for them. As we do not encourage tipping or charge a service tax in the Club, the annual Hong Bao is much appreciated by the team, who work hard throughout the year giving their best to serve all Members. You will be receiving a letter in your monthly statement of accounts regarding this soon. On behalf of the Club Management and employees, I thank you for your generous and continued support. Looking forward to a brand new year, I wish all Members a Wonder ful Christmas and a Prosperous, Peaceful 2015.

Pensions become more flexible By David Pugh
Major changes to the way pensions can be taken have been announced by the UK Government. Chancellor George Osborne said people should be “free to choose what they do with their money”. Most people can take up to 25% tax-free cash from their pension. From April 2015 you’ll be able to decide how you take that tax-free cash: take it all in one go upfront or have a portion of any withdrawals you make tax free. So, someone with a pension worth £100,000 will have the choice of: 1.
Taking the £25,000 tax-free cash all at once, with any subsequent withdrawals taxed as income;
2.
Making a series of withdrawals over time and receiving 25% of each withdrawal tax free. For instance, someone making lump sum withdrawals of £20,000 would receive £5,000 of each withdrawal tax free. Equally, someone taking an income of £1,000 a month, would receive £250 of that payment tax free. Please note: this will not be available through an annuity.
The second option could be attractive because it could help you manage your tax liability. While this gives you much more flexibility when it comes to taking your pension, the added choice can still confuse some people so advice should always be sought. You also need to remember any withdrawals in excess of the taxfree amount will be taxed at your marginal rate, this is the highest rate of income tax you are liable to pay. However, there is no obligation to take any money from a pension – now or after April 2015. You could just leave your pension pot untouched.
Passing on your pension Another major change now makes it more tax-efficient for relatives to inherit your pension savings. Until now, there was little incentive to reserve your pension fund, because on death it could be subject to a severe 55% pension ‘death tax’. But from April next year this 55% pension ‘death tax’ will be scrapped. So when you die, any money left in your pension can be passed on to your beneficiaries who will instead be charged either their marginal rate, take the income tax free or be subject to 45% tax (this applies if you die after age 75 and your beneficiaries take your pension as a lump sum). The new flexibility is making pensions increasingly attractive. You can build up your pension fund, knowing from age 55 you can not only draw on your savings without the current restrictions, but also pass on any unused savings to beneficiaries tax efficiently on death. However, with the freedom comes the responsibility of managing your pension responsibly. Please do get in touch if you like a complementary, no obligation “health check” of your existing UK pensions. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Past President Terry O’Connor OBE. Mr Terry O’Connor, Group CEO of Courts Asia Limited, is an active leading figure in the British Community in Singapore, having held the position of President of The British Club from 1999 to 2002 and President of the British Chamber of Commerce from 2006 to 2010. In 2010, he was conferred the award of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty, The Queen of England. Just recently in August, Mr O’Connor was honoured with an honorary degree by the University of Stirling in recognition of his outstanding contributions to retailing and British business in Singapore. In this exclusive interview, he shares with us some insights into his life in Singapore. When did you join the Club and reason for doing so… I joined in 1993. Having looked at other Clubs, the welcome was very different. Being greeted with a pint of Boddingtons and a smile won me over.
When I am not working, you would probably spot me at… The gym. We also have a holiday home in Bali, which we try to visit when we can!
What I like best about Singapore is… The dynamism and everchanging landscape. It’s hard to believe that Marina Bay Sands didn’t exist a few years ago.
My hobbies… I am a mad Liverpool Football Club supporter. I think I can dance, but I can’t. My wife, Janice, and I are also very active in charity and community outreach efforts.
Please share with us your favourite restaurant/s in Singapore… Other than the British Club’s Mountbatten Room which we staunchly support, we also love OSO Ristorante in Bukit Pasoh Road.
My favourite holiday destinations include… Bali, and I had a kick out of Rio de Janeiro when I visited it with my son this year for World Cup.
As one of the Past President of the British Club, can you share with us anything about the Club which the Members may not know about? During my tenure, we were considering a merger with the Swiss Club to leverage each other’s respective businesses and sports facilities. It never materialised, and to this day, I feel it would have added significant synergy.

The aromas explode like an olfactory, Aurora Borealis filling the senses of meteorites of smell sensations as they explode from the glass. Sweet delicate menthol, apple mint, spring woodlands, juniper, coriander with aniseed undertones, lemon and orange peel, a bouquet of summer flowers on the machir honey from thistle, coconut from gorse, wild mint and summer meadows.
Palate
The taste is rich and mellow; cool on entry then as it reaches the back palate you can feel the warmth and absolute purity of slow unhurried distillation. Its citrus freshness excites and stimulates the taste buds allowing you to experience a starburst of flavours as they explode across the palate.

A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN D U R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MBIII is not like other pilot’s watches. It’s built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the MBIII is strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. Then a vibration test simulates 30 years of continuous flying. But this doesn’t mean the MBIII is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer with GMT functionality, certified 99.998% accurate by COSC, the official Swiss testing institute.

SEASON WIND-DOWN
Random musings from an entirely random mind. By David Kempton Game 3. BC 122 for 8, ANZA 124 for 3, Lost by 7 wickets Benno possibly relieved himself of captaincy duties forever (maybe that was the plan?) by repeating the previous week’s mistake of winning the toss and electing to bat. If last week was a beating, this was a thrashing. Apart from the steady Lakhanpal (25 from 41, including two successive 6’s) and the even steadier Rose (29 from 55) nobody came to grips with the ANZA attack. In response ANZA were even more dominant, although we did drop Edmondstone off the first ball of their innings, which would have been the first time we had dismissed him in this competition, but it was not to be. Only Bacon could really hold his head up with 2 for 7 from 2 overs, the other wicket going to a below par Prendeville. Game 4. Cusadans 170 all out, BC 171 for 6, Won by 4 wickets
By the time you read this, the BC cricket season will have drifted to a close and all eyes will be on the election of a new executive to take the team forward next year. Of course the new team is likely to be the old team but hopefully some of the newer members will step forward to shoulder the burden of high office and put themselves in the firing line from members less gruntled with decisions and how things are progressed. Our 2014 Veterans League campaign has passed into folklore as our most successful to date and here’s a rundown. Played: 5
Won: 2 Lost: 3 – League table position: Not Last!
Welcoming back Cap’n Todd, who had no hesitation in fielding first when he astonishingly won the toss, BC proved the old adage that catches win matches. In a performance we’ve rarely seen the like of, not a single outfield catch was dropped (7 for 7) and this support for the bowlers saw the opposition dismissed for 170 well within their allotted 30 overs. Bowling honours went to Bignell, who finished with 4, although it has to be said he bought the first one very expensively. Backing him up was Bacon with 2 and all the other bowlers with one apiece. The BC innings was well paced to win with 5 deliveries to spare, notable contributions from the reliable Lakhanpal (30), Marsh (24), Bignell (31, retired) and Bennett (26 no). Cap’n Buck did try and hex the innings by warning batsmen they were approaching retirement. Having done this to both Gaurav and Ross, who promptly got out, we then sat on him to prevent him doing it again to Simon.
Whilst it may not look much considering in the two previous years we’ve failed to win a single game, believe me, this represents a Game 5. Misfits 83 all out, BC 84 for 3, Won by 7 wickets towering achievement. Further rain on an already drenched Turf City shortened this Game 1. SCC 238 for 8, BC 195 for 7, Lost by 43 runs to a 15-overs a-side contest and once again allowed the BC to demonstrate its unrivalled ability at sub-aqua cricket. With A Sunday game at Dempsey saw the BC in a generous mood Cap’n Todd having yet again lost the toss the Misfits skipper as 28 wides and 2 no-balls allowed SCC to pile up a big score batting first. There were two wickets apiece for Bennett, Bromell and Prendeville but runs per over varied from the just about acceptable (5.6 for Prendy) to the downright ugly (10.25 for Hosking). In reply, BC replied upon the middle order of Prendeville, Bromell and Bignell, who each made retirement but couldn’t just match SCC’s scoring rate (even though they were equally generous with the wide’s total). Game 2. BC 164 all out, Spirits 165 for 4, Lost by 6 wickets With Cap’n Todd AWOL, Benno took over the role and immediately made the classic boo-boo of winning the toss and electing to bat. Despite a bright opening from Hosking (20) and Wall (26), wickets began to fall regularly and only a late flourish from Atkins (23, including three 6’s) saw us reach the inadequate total of 164. How inadequate, Spirits quickly demonstrated, knocking off the runs in 24 overs. Bennett managed the one wicket and Atkins, demonstrating his all-round ability (can bat, can bowl, can’t run) took the other 3 but at a cost of 42 from his 5 overs. THE BRITISH CLUB

Special mention for Wall, who steadied an already upright ship into immobility, and Twine who repaid Misfits by allowing himself to be bowled first ball. Quiz Question Answer: Our last message to our adoring public posed the question how many wides will we bowl in the Vets League this season? And the answer is: 79 After the terrible opening of 28 against SCC how did we reduce it by so many? Simple – Economics. Cap’n Todd instituted a fine system of $2 per wide bowled and immediately our tight fisted bowlers started to bowl straight. Of course it also helped that we only bowled 15 overs against both ANZA and Misfits and 24 and 26.5 against Spirits and Cusadans respectively, rather than the full 30. Now we’re on a roll..........
Remember – the secret to a happy life is to treat your wife like you do your beloved cricket bat: Take her out often and keep somewhat surprisingly elected to bat. Whether this was tactics her well oiled. or just the desire to let the pre-match combo of beer, samosa and wrap digest before attempting to field we shall never know. Even more surprisingly Twine delivered a first delivery which was straight, so surprising in fact the opener missed it and lost his middle stump. This set the tone for the BC bowling performance. Special mention goes to Bromell, who delivered 3 overs for 4 runs (1 wicket) and the surprise package Lakhanpal who in a faux Darshan performance recorded 3 for 12 from 1.4 overs. He then went on to cement his man-of-the-match claim making a retired 32, opening our innings with a 6. He was ably supported by Hoskins (19 and not LBW) and Marsh (15 and was LBW).

THE FINAL WITH ZAINAL By The Boaster After a long delay to allow Zainal to climb further up the world rankings, he and Charlie Thomas finally took the court for the final of the Club’s open tournament. The game was a repeat of last year’s finale, won by Zainal, and the question was – could he make it past Checkpoint Charlie to retain his title? The squash was spectacular from both of them but the occasional flash of magic and deception from Zainal put Charlie under too much pressure, and Zainal won 3-0.
Club’s Open Tournament Runner-Up Charlie & Winner Zainal
Next up will be the annual handicap knock-out where Charlie is our defending champion. There will be more cheers and tears at the squash courts just before Christmas as that title is decided. CHOCKS AWAY – match report by Wing Commander Craig The section enjoyed a great evening in September taking on a touring RAF side. The airmen attacked with 11 strong squash players. The BC responded with a United Nations alliance defense bringing in some squash players from across the Island. • Charlie gunned down Damien in a fantastic 3-2 match. (having lost to the same opponent 2 years back) • Simon fell on the bayonet against Andy. • Ben was hit by a grenade named Dave. • Darren’s martial arts skills were no match for Bez’s handgun. • Bill was taken to the field medical tent 2/3 of the way through against the Aussie fellow. • Gabriel from SICC was taken out by Mike’s double barrel shotgun.
• At 1 – 5 down, many teams would have raised the white flag, however, I knew that we had some gunpowder further down the lineup:
Gerald, our COSMO #1 player, played in the final match and was 2-2 and 10-10 in the fifth against a very handy Mark. With no ammunition left and with the gallery packed upstairs with all soldiers drinking, cheering and going AWOL, Gerald eventually bludgeoned Mark to death with the butt of his squash racquet. 15-13 in the last!!
• Herve from SGCC took out Gareth with the Sniper Rifle. • Daniel from HC put the squash ball and a Claymore in the corner against Lee. • James from HC tripped up Chrissie with an explosive booby trap. • Miles from Fry group borrowed the explosive booby trap from James and blew up Annabel.
THE BRITISH CLUB
BC 6 – RAF 5. Well done chaps. COSMO Just past the halfway point of the Cosmo season and the BC – in charge of the competition this year – are supporting the league in every way, not least by sitting at the bottom of the table propping everyone else up. We have, however, scored a pair of good home & away wins against the league leading Tanglin Club – perhaps a sign of a second-half comeback in the making?

SWIMMING:
Section Report By Helen Tynan
Back row, Cameron Finlay, Andrew Moore, Tristan Howitt, Roland Sarmiento, Andrew Phelan, Neil Trayler Front row, Susan Finlay, Emma Thomas, Helen Tynan, Natasha Howitt, Alain Chan
The swimming section continues to be a hive of activities with lots going on in and around the pool. In recent weeks we have seen the Masters competing in the annual Singapore Masters swim meet, the permanent addition of the dive blocks, a British Club swim team’s visit to the FINA world cup event at the Aquatics centre as well as the normal Barracuda and learn to swim sessions. In mid-October our Masters swimming team competed in the 2014 Singapore Masters swim meet. Held at Toa Payoh swimming complex, the meet comprised 28 different clubs competing in a multitude of different races, across all strokes and various different age ranges (in fact the oldest competitor was over 80!). The British Club entered a squad of 9 masters whose ages ranged from 24 to 53 and valiantly competed in 38 different races (plus 2 relays). Through the focused training of coaches Roland and Alain, the team returned with a significant medal haul, comprising 10 golds, 10 silvers, 2 bronze and 5 new masters meet records. Special mention to Susan and Cameron Finlay, Natasha Howitt and Neil Trayler for setting new meet records in their respective age group events. If there are any members out there that would like to get involved in the Masters group please email us at swimming@Britishclub.org.sg. The masters welcome all abilities and ages (over 18) whether you’re interested in competitive swimming or just want to stay fit. The Masters train 8am to 9am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; and 7.30pm-8.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Since the end of October you will have noticed the permanent installation of the dive blocks in lanes 1, 2 and 3. This is to allow our swimmers to get more coaching on their dives & starts from the respective coaches. Please do not use the blocks when the blue covers are over them, they are only to be used under the guidance of Alain and his coaching staff. As we approach the end of the year, it is with sadness that we will be saying goodbye to the Thorpe family in December. Rob, Suzanne, Robbie, Sam and Will have been great swimming section members over the years and will be greatly missed in and around the pool. Good luck in Australia and do stay in touch. Dates and events for the remainder of the year include; • 30 November: The British Club Swimming Gala • Monday – Saturday, 1 – 6 December: Learn to Swim Graduation Ceremonies • Wednesday, 10 December: Barracudas Year-end Party and Awards evening Please note that from 1 December all BC members signing up for Learn To Swim, Barracudas, or Masters training will automatically join the Swimming section, and be charged $5/ month / family.
Any questions or feedback, please get in touch on swimming@Britishclub.org.sg, we would love to know any ideas, queries, or concerns. Happy swimming. SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

Year-End Tennis Round-Up By Nousheen Jalal By the time this is published many of you will have already met Sally Morris in her role as Ladies Tennis Convenor. Sally stepped up to the challenge with some gentle persuasion from Fiona Barton and a few others at the Club who will remain unnamed for now. The Morris family moved to Singapore from Bristol just a little over a year ago. Sally has already been contributing her professional expertise to The British Association as the Treasurer. Sally and her family are passionate about all things sports – surfing, football, cycling, and running. Her husband Phil is a keen cyclist who is enjoying riding with ANZA these days. Her sons, Joe and Hugo, are evaluating whether riding waves in Bali are acceptable substitutes for those in Cornwall. Fortunately for the British Club, the family has a special fondness for tennis as the Morris boys are on court regularly and Sally is as active off court as she is on court. This season Hugo plays for BC Hercules, a U12 team in the KLM Junior Team Tennis league and Sally is the team manager. Sally herself is part of Court Appeal, a British Club team in Division B in the Women’s Interclub Tennis Singapore (WITS) and she also plays in “Mix ‘n Match” in the Ladies Tennis Singapore (LTS) league. She restarted her tennis game seven years ago at her club in Bristol after a 25 year break. Sally is delighted that a move to the tropics did not result in another break. Sally says “I have loved the British Club for making me part of something when I arrived in Singapore”. The Tennis Committee is really pleased to have Sally Morris as Ladies Convenor. If you have not met Sally or the rest of the Tennis committee, please join us and more tennis lovers for the Red Hat Social on Saturday 6 December from 2-5pm. Following some doubles play in the afternoon, we will proceed to the serious business of the tennis section’s Annual General Meeting over a few drinks and a buffet dinner at Scores. By that time, the British Club Junior Tennis Tournament would have concluded. Many of us might be musing over the U18 tennis talent at the British Club who wowed us with their moves over three weekends in November. Many of them would have also proudly represented the Club by playing in KLM Junior Team Tennis League. There were eight British Club teams, playing in the U10, U12, U14 and U16 groups in this season; all teams are doing well with a few matches still outstanding. Boys, girls and parents cap the mark each Season’s end with trophies for Best Sports Person, dinner and a swim. If any of the Club’s under-18s had inspired your own children to pick up a racquet, do contact the Sports & Recreation (SRC) team or the Junior Convenors, Liza Rowan and Kim Das, to be involved in high energy fun that start at the Club courts. THE BRITISH CLUB
Adults who are keen to test their competitive tennis, note that the British Club sponsors men and women’s teams in the Singapore Tennis Association (STA) Inter-Club League. Singles season starts in in January 2015 and Doubles season will run again from September. In the WITS league for ladies, the British Club usually has the most teams in the league with our players competing in almost every division during Spring and Autumn. For men and women who are more inclined to just plan amongst British Club members, do sign up for the Ladies’ Ladder Singles, Ladies’ Ladder Doubles, or Men’s Boxes Singles. Sarah Smith coordinates the Ladies’ Ladder whilst Kerry Friend organises the Men’s Boxes. Both are eager to see more players join in. Please reach out to the SRC team or the Tennis Committee by contacting sports@britishclub.org.sg. Members, thank you for your active participation and support throughout 2014 thus making the Tennis section among the most active communities at the British Club. We look forward to getting to know you better on and off-court in 2015. As 2014 comes to a close, on behalf of all BC tennis players we say a thank you to all the British Club staff who make our hours of tennis possible – the Sports & Recreation team led by Sajan s/o Sahadevan, the tennis coaching team lead by Darren Moore, the friendly staff at Scores, and the Facilities team.
Tennis Calendar Friday 5 December from 7pm • Mixed Doubles Social with First Friday drink Saturday 6 December from 2pm • Red Hat Social 2-5pm for Mixed Doubles play on all 4 courts • Tennis Section AGM from 5:30pm with drinks and buffet dinner at Scores

SCUBA:
New Divers in Training By Eva and Harriet Carlyle We joined the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) recently. Our Dad learnt to dive in his University days, and when we came to Singapore, this was the perfect opportunity to do the same. Fortunately, everyone was very helpful at the British Club and we soon joined the SCUBA section. We also joined the local branch of BSAC, which enabled us to learn Scuba diving. There are currently 7 of us on the course, a mix of adults and children. You must be at least 12 years of age to partake in it. The first course that you take is the Ocean Diver Course, which includes theory and practical training. Theory lectures take place for approximately 1-2 hours each week for about 6 weeks, if you are especially keen, then it may be possible to complete the theory part of the training in less time. The lectures are informative and help you to understand the physiology of Scuba diving, safety precautions involved and, most importantly, how to enjoy yourself as much as possible. You cover a variety of topics, such as dive planning, dive equipment and the effects of diving on your body. If you are busy on some days, the lecturer is very flexible and will meet your needs to the best of their abilities. There will be a short test at the end of the theory lectures. All the topics included in the assessment will have been covered during the lectures. Additionally, you are required to do a number of practical training sessions. These involve “pool sessions” and “open water dives”. During the pool sessions, you will learn essential skills for diving, including how to set up your equipment and how to communicate under the water. All you will need is basic snorkelling gear (mask, fins and a snorkel) and it is advisable to have a weight belt (though weights for it are not needed), the other equipment for your dive (BCD, cylinder, weights) is provided. It is important that you practise skills needed for diving in a pool before in open water, as it helps you to gain confidence in your ability and would help you to stay calm in an emergency situation. Once you have passed the theory test and successfully completed the pool sessions, you will be able to go on some open water dives. This is all part of the training. We are really enjoying the course and would highly recommend it. It’s never too late to join! Thank you to all the people who have made this possible. RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT
Madras Cricket Club
“Cricket was his religion and the Madras Cricket Club was his Church” it was said of one of its most illustrious members since its inception in 1846. Inextricably entwined with the history of Madras (and later Tamil Nadu) Cricket, the institution founded by that eminent civil servant, Sir Alexander Arbuthnot, largely to fill the Englishman’s need for a home away from home, continues to mean as much to its members today as it did 150 years ago. For nearly a hundred years, the club remained an exclusive preserve of the ‘Europeans’, opening its doors to Indian members only when the first winds of Independence began to sweep across the country. During those hundred years, it had played its role to perfection – that of promoting and developing not only cricket but also hockey and tennis and squash. In fact, the Madras Cricket Club was instrumental in giving direction to every sport gaining ground in the Presidency. It had maintained the Chepauk cricket ground with loving care; those who played on it or watched cricket on it in its pre-stadium days remember with nostalgia its perfect outfield surrounded by trees, its sporting wicket and its picturesque old pavilion. From its earlier days until the Madras Cricket Association gradually took over the administration of the sport – and even then it was led by MCC members – the club it was that organized all representative cricket, playing host to national and international teams. It set an example by conducting matches with clockwork precision and smooth efficiency. It continues to conduct a prestigious all-Indian Hockey tournament which is over a hundred years old. It is the home of South Indian Squash and, boasting of one of the best facilities in the country, it hosts tournaments with great success. For years the MCC Tennis tournament provided some of the best competition in that game.
