PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, There is plenty in store for you over the coming Lunar New Year period commencing with the formal celebration to be held in front of the driveway of the main Club on 9 February. If you have not experienced this before it is a great occasion, enjoyed by young and old, with fabulous entertainment including exciting acrobatic performances, synchronized drums and a special lion dance. Immediately following that opening celebration, there is the traditional Yu Sheng or Prosperity Toss, which takes place in the Verandah; something to watch whilst you take lunch perhaps? Members can also savour our braised pork knuckles or whole suckling pig in the specially designed reunion banquet menus. With the Christmas festivities behind us, the wet season ending and the haze hopefully long gone, now is the time to get back into sport and make full use of the outdoor activities and dining opportunities at the Club. I’m sure there are many out there with New Year’s resolutions to fulfill!

There are reasons aplenty for everyone to celebrate this short month (with long holidays!) by spending time at the Club. You may be aware that on the first Thursday of every month, we host the Members Connect Night. Weather permitting, this event takes place at the Treetops Terrace, which is a fabulous venue overlooking our lovely grounds and with commanding views of the surrounding parts of Singapore (great for a function or private party). Members have the opportunity to network as well as meet the Main Committee and the Management team over a few drinks and light bites. This month our Members Connect will be held at 7:30pm on Thursday, 4 February, so do come along and join us at this event which is open to both new and current Members alike. I am pleased to welcome Mr. Stephen Walker as a member of the Main Committee. Stephen will chair the Member Services Committee and I am confident he will lead that team well in the work they do with members and the management team to help deliver a wide variety of great activities and events at the Club. All of our Sub-Committees are back in full swing, having resumed their monthly meetings after the holiday break. The Club is always looking for extra help and fresh ideas and members who have the desire and commitment to make a difference are most welcome to make themselves known to any committee Chair, to me or to the management of the Club. We will be having our Open House on 6 March. Please take this opportunity to introduce your friends and take a tour of the lovely grounds of the Club. If your friends like the Club, our Membership team would be more than happy to assist with membership applications. With that, Gong Xi Fa Cai to all! DAMIAN R. HILLS President THE BRITISH CLUB

I apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, but hope that each and every one of you will understand that the current situation requires us all to be more vigilant. Financial Services must change its image – starting with ending the practice of cold calling By David Pugh, Director of The Fry Group, Singapore
David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.
Picture the scene. You’re sitting in your office at five o’clock in the afternoon, rushing to meet a deadline, and the phone rings. Just for a second, you consider letting it go on to answer phone. But you don’t. It might just be important. You pick up the receiver and the voice on the other end starts trying to sell you financial advice. Make no mistake, cold calling is irritating and, in this day and age, potentially damaging to the reputation of the financial advisory industry as a whole. For the sake of transparency, I will declare an interest – our firm has a strict no cold calling policy. It’s not only annoying and counter-productive, we think it’s bad for business. A survey by the UK’s Citizens Advice found that 92% of people do not trust firms that call them out of the blue – financial services firms were singled out for criticism. At its worst, cold calling opens the door for exploitation of the vulnerable in society. Two in five scams reported to Citizens Advice come from cold calling. Over a third are offering financial and professional services. That is why I welcomed the introduction in Singapore of “Do Not Call” rules in January. In its first few months, nearly 800,000 telephone numbers have been registered with the DNC Registry and thousands have complained about cold calling. Offenders face a cash fine. The UK is adopting an even more robust approach. Earlier this month, a claims management firm was fined £850,000 after making a staggering six million calls in the space of six months under tough new data protection laws. In Australia, an official at the regulator ASIC said publicly that ‘reputable’ financial services professionals do not generate leads via cold calls. For some reason the message isn’t getting through. Financial advice firms in Singapore are still getting contact details from third parties and calling them directly. Worse, anecdotally, cold-calling is moving on-line with financial advisors stalking prospects on social media websites such as LinkedIn. There is something you can do about cold calling. Firstly, take your financial future seriously. You probably wouldn’t buy a car or a home from someone who has cold called you. Financial advice shouldn’t be any different. Do your due diligence, check their qualifications, look for a solid track record, and seek referrals. Getting the right financial advice is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Secondly, you can register your numbers with the DNC registry quite easily. By law, unless you have an existing relationship, advice firms should remove your phone details from their call sheets once you have registered. But I don’t think the answer lies solely with the customer. I believe it’s time the industry moved away from cold calling altogether whether people register their phone numbers or not. Without an end to cold calling for financial services, people remain at risk of losing some of their pension or paying upfront fees for services which aren’t in their best interest. A unified industry response on this practice would send a clear message that if you are contacted in this way, the advice you will receive is not likely to be in your best interests and the caller is not to be trusted. As an industry, we have a responsibility to protect our clients and potential customers by being the best we can be.

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan LUNAR NEW YEAR “Our Way”, is a combination of the Club’s British heritage and its presence here in Singapore, presenting customs, festivals and traditions of both countries. The British Club’s General Manager, Sean Boyle, the epitome of a dapper and refined British gentleman, is the motivation for this, with his continuing efforts in promoting cross-cultural adaptability amongst Members. To begin, “Our Way” embraces the auspicious event of Lunar New Year, the Year of the Monkey, on Monday, 8 February, with celebrations lasting for 15 days. There are many traditions and customs associated with this important Chinese festival, with family ties paramount. Pussy willows, colourful flowers, pots of kumquats, red banners and lanterns can be seen throughout Singapore. The colour red symbolises good luck, while circular shapes represent harmony. The first and second days of New Year are popular for visiting relatives and friends, though the third day is inauspicious, believing that quarrels may erupt. Household chores like sweeping, dusting and washing are not done on New Year’s Day, for fear of brushing away good luck. A time for us all to be neighbourly! Because of their shape and colour, and because the Cantonese pronunciation is ‘kum’ (gold), mandarins symbolise good luck. Customarily, two are presented to one’s host, using both hands, with the wish “Gong Xi Fa Cai” (a wish for prosperity). Children receive hongbao, red envelopes containing money in even numbers, from married persons as good luck gifts.
Photographs, lanterns, kumquats, by Raelene Tan
Enjoy the Lunar New Year festivities!
Raelene Tan is an Australian married to a Singaporean Chinese. Having been a resident of Singapore for more than 45 years, Raelene is also the co-founder of the Cosmopolitan Women’s Club in Singapore. Raelene is currently an Etiquette Consultant and a Food & Travel Writer. She has often been heard on radio programmes and appeared in several television programmes, including BBC World. Raelene’s etiquette classes are popular with all who aspire to gracious living. “Etiquette – A Matter Of Course”, a series of four books covering Chinese, Indian & Malay, Western and Japanese table etiquette, is Raelene’s contribution to the art of enjoyable eating and gracious living.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Member in the spotlight
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Miles Gooseman.
Miles joined The British Club in 2014. He is currently a Financial Consultant of The Fry Group. In 2014, Miles was awarded the Young Professional of the year at the British Chambers of Commerce’s 15th Annual Business Awards. He was also recognised as Singapore’s #1 Expatriate Financial Advisor for two consecutive years in the finance industry. In this issue, we are pleased to have Miles sharing a glimpse of his life and success story.
You have a splendid track record in the finance industry winning the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore Young Professional of the year award amongst other accolades. What is your motivation? I am motivated by the idea of building long term, sustainable relationships with my clients and helping them achieve their goals by offering honest, transparent and practical advice. Helping my clients with their needs is something which keeps me very driven and helps me to stay motivated. What are the attributes you feel that are important in contributing to your success? In order to be successful, I think you need to have a strong work ethic, this is something I have always prided myself in. It also helps to have a strong brand and excellent team behind you. Knowing that I am a representative of The Fry Group keeps me focused and makes me strive to live up to their standard of excellence. Finally, I think that in order to be successful, it is important to have a good work life balance which is something I work hard to maintain. With your work and commitment as the Co-Chairman of The British Chamber of Commerce, what other interests keep you busy? I enjoy going to the gym as much as possible. I also try to make time to do charity and I regularly volunteer at the Cheshire Nursing Home working with the elderly and disabled. It is great to be able to give something back and contribute to such a great cause. My fiancé Jess is currently based in Sydney so I try to visit her as frequently as I can. Thankfully Jess will be relocating to Singapore this February which I am really looking forward to. I also enjoy running regularly and watch the English National Cricket and Rugby teams at every opportunity despite their recent lack of success. What do you like about The British Club? The British Club has a lot to offer for the expat community in Singapore. The Windsor Arms is a great place to watch football and sport. The British Club also has great sporting facilities to offer and a great selection of restaurants. I particularly enjoy The Mountbatten Room which has a fantastic menu and extensive wine list coupled with friendly staff and great service. What are your favourite activities at the Club? The wine dinners are very enjoyable and are a great place to entertain clients and to meet new people. I have always enjoyed the annual “The Best of British” celebrations, a great opportunity to enjoy all things British here in Singapore.

Natural honey in colour. On the nose, orange, apple and dried fruit notes highlight a vibrant and rich aroma. Vanilla, toffee and chocolate underlay oak overtones. The palate is meandering, warming, wood spices; takes time to open up and reveal nutmeg, cinnamon, hints of dried ginger and toffee. The fruit appears later – fresh and balanced with fresh oak.

WINE BY THE GLASS
(available in all F&B outlets)
Tapena Verdejo 2013, Vino de La Tierra Castilla La Mancha, Spain
Tapena Tempranillo 2013, Spain This quintessential red wine grape from Spain, Tempranillo, the little early one, adapts well to varied growing conditions. We think of Tempranillo as Pinot Noir in blue jeans. Intense ruby red in colour along with violet-blue undertones which characterise this wine youth. This classic Tempranillo holds juicy red fruit aromas with just a touch of chocolate. On the palate, you will find ripe red fruit flavours with a soft and silky finish carrying supple tannins and great length. Combines beautifully with roast or grilled red meats in addition to a multitude of different tapas, from grilled kebabs to garlic prawns.
Verdejo (ver-DAY-ho) is the Spanish answer to Sauvignon Blanc with a hint more floral aromas. Verdejo is known to come from several regions across Spain ranging from Rueda to Tierra de Castilla. This varietal has been written about by wine writers from Robert Parker to Hugh Johnson as the next hot white known for good value for money. This pale yellow hued wine has a vibrant nose with an array of aromas of tropical fruits over a backdrop of ripe peaches. The palate is full of bright stone fruit that is beautifully balanced with a crisp, refreshing acidity and a lingering finish with a hint of minerality. Pairs well with many different dishes. Try it with grilled salmon, lemon chicken, creamy lighter cheeses such as goat cheese or a fresh summer salad.

SQuash:
THE BATTLE OF THE BASEMENT By The Boaster
There are some very good squash players at The British Club. They are lean, agile, talented and very competitive. This article is not about them. There are some pretty good players too – perhaps not quite as lean as they once were, not so agile, still very competitive. But this article is not about them either. This month, we celebrate the men further down the ranks. Some are lean, but many are not. Some were once agile, but no more. There may once have been a suggestion of talent that was perhaps unfulfilled. But they are still very competitive. I am talking about the tail end of our Cosmo squad, the men who spend longer over a Tiger in Scores than tearing round the court like a tiger and keeping score. In particular, I’m talking about the players in box 3 of our monthly leagues. The cruel might say that they are only in box 3 because there isn’t a number 4 but that is beside the point. Andrew ‘no look boast’ Vine, Rainer ‘money’ Kasch, Paul ‘the other Canadian’ Nikkel and ‘Big’ Ben Kiggell made up the box and over the last few weeks of 2015 they had an epic battle. Match 1 was a hard fought 3-1 win for Paul over Andrew, and he followed that up with a win over Rainer. So far, so good for Paul. Meanwhile, Ben took on Andrew and went 1-0 up, only to lose the second, then was 2-1 up only to lose the fourth. Andrew pulled ahead in the decider and had match points at 14-10 but Ben makes up in stubbornness what he lacks in most other squash skills and pulled back to 14-14. Andrew boldly chose sudden death, but couldn’t grab the point he needed and Ben won the point, the game and the match. A few days later it was Ben v Paul and another massive battle. Each game was decided by only 2 or 3 points and Ben came out the winner 3-1, leaving both men on two wins, but Paul with the advantage on points having won his two by bigger margins. Andrew & Paul were on hand for the key match, Ben against Rainer, and Paul got excited as Rainer went 1-0 then 2-0 up. Ben fought back, winning game three and saving a match point before winning game 4 and then claiming game 5, and with it the top spot in the box. The spirit of squash was the real winner, though, and all four enjoyed a Tiger (or two) to finish the evening. So for the A graders and for Jim, Jamie, James and the rest in box 1 – well done last year but the real action was down in the basement.

SPORTS & FITNESS Golf:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Order of Merit - Champion emerges from a ‘Perfect Day’ at Ria Bintan Belying the Sumatra Squalls, we cruised to Bintan on a calm December sea to tackle the Ria Bintan Golf Course in perfect weather. With the outcome of the Order of Merit finely balanced, our challengers Paul Nikkel and Nic Merrow-Smith, set off on the picturesque Ocean Blue outward 9. The pressure clearly got to both players as they struggled to find fairways or capitalise on each other’s mistakes. Early fireworks were provided by the pursuing flight of Steve Settle and Andrew Stearns in particular, who birdied the two par 3’s. Nic closed-out the front nine well, finding the green on the tricky par 3 signature hole and giving him the momentum to come back in 40 shots on the easier inward Forest 9, ahead of challenger Paul Nikkel. Although not good enough for Nic to win the Stableford, it was sufficient for him to secure his first Order of Merit at the 4th attempt. Honours for the day went to Mark Nikkel, winning his second Stableford of the year with some great driving and chipping on the back 9 for a total of 39 points. Steve Settle took the runner-up spot with a gross 82 for a fine 35 points with Andrew Stearns in third place on 34 points. Nearest the pins went to Nic Merrow-Smith for his shot on the 9th and Colin Allcard for his shot to within a metre on the 13th. Our last longest drive of the year went to Andrew Stearns.
A Commonwealth Flush Nic Merrow-Smith (far left) with Paul and Mark Nikkel and fellow Canadian, Daniel Germain (far right)
Legend has it, that there’s a Squash Section vs. Golf Section Challenge Shield to play for, but a mutiny (Richard Offer, Steve Settle and Andrew Stearns) curtailed the challenge leaving squash convenor Craig Telmer (3rd from left) to just enjoy the day.
Daniel Germain finds the opportunity for a bit of ‘rambling’ with a number of wayward drives on the front nine.
Mark Nikkel secured his 2nd Stableford win of the year (39 points) and bagged two sleeves of our BC Titleist ProV1’s
THE BRITISH CLUB
Long hitter Andrew Stearns is flanked by Nic and Colin who out-gunned him for accuracy on the selected par 3’s.
Our congratulations go to Nic Merrow-Smith on winning the 2015 Order of Merit. Nic competed in all 10 rounds, amassing 59 points which included one win, three 2nd places and two 3rd places. Others who figured around the top of the leaderboard during the year included John Bussell (57.5 points,) Mark Nikkel (55.5 points,) Paul Nikkel (52.5 points,) David Christie (42 points,) and Colin Allcard (39.5 points). A great day was brought to a close at Scores with dinner, a few jars, and much talk about those missed fairways and putts of 2015. Happy golfing indeed. For the record; over 30 section members participated in the 2015 Order of Merit, completing over 90 games of golf. Hopefully we can get even more of you out on the course regularly in 2016, which is of course the secret to winning that illusive Order of Merit.

SPORTS & FITNESS Tennis:
Previous season – successes to be proud of Edited by Julia Fenton
Junior and Teen Christmas Social – rain on court but certainly no wash-outs! This successful group continued to enjoy fun as well as success to the very end of 2015. Their Christmas Social was truly a family affair, with eighteen 10-17 year olds playing and parents energetically out sweeping to counteract the effects of heavy rain, avoiding the courts morphing into a giant splash zone! Everyone was rewarded with well-deserved sustenance and mulled wine for the parents!
Coaches Top Tips – the overhead; great advice from Coach David Waggett The overhead is a difficult shot and there’s nothing worse for a tennis player than to labour away during a point, finally get into a position to win the point and then mess up what should be the final winning shot of the rally. We’ve all experienced how bad that feeling is; the expectation is that the player hitting the smash should win the point. • When the lob goes up, ensure that you turn your body side on and change the position of your feet. For the right handed player the left leg would be closest to the net. This helps create mobility and you will find it much easier to get into position under the ball. • As you get side on, assume the trophy position. Therefore, for a right handed player, left arm pointing at the ball and right arm behind your head with the elbow at an 80-90 degree angle. • You should be doing these two steps as soon as you see the lob going up. If you do it correctly, you will find yourself underneath the ball with plenty of time, good balance and more ease with which to bring the racquet through to make contact at the correct time. •
Often players stay front on for too long which limits mobility when you need to move in a 360 degree range of motion. Not having the racquet in a set position compounds the issue of being out of position. When attempting to strike the ball, players often misinterpret how quickly it’s descending down from its peak height. And if your racquet is not set then you will really struggle to time the shot.
• So practice your smash next time you play and implement these points when doing so. You will find that with a bit of practice and the right technique, you’ll look forward to getting lobs thrown up in matches as opposed to dreading it.
WITS – team success all round in 2015 Our five WITS teams produced some great results last season and are now fully charged to begin the new season with vigour; good luck to them all! Our determined WITS ladies are represented in the following teams: Swing out Sisters in Premier B (promoted to Premier B following their win of A) Court Appeal in Alpha Glam Slams in Beta No Strings Attached in C Swing out Sisters collecting their trophy at the WITS Winter Wonderland event, where The British Club kindly donated $700 of vouchers for prizes.

Cricket:
End of Season 2015 report By Gaurav Lakhanpal
By the time you read this, the new season for The British Club’s (BC) Cricket would have already started. Although a tad late but here is the 2015 season report, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place in early December and we have a change of guard in the office. New members have stepped in which is a good sign for the cricket section. Year on year we are improving our cricket facilities to provide our members a great experience while being away from family members on a Saturday afternoon. We have an improved drainage system, which now competes with the best grounds in the country, better storage, shade, chairs, food and drinks. Logistics have been managed perfectly throughout the year with Todd Buck being the convenor and also helping out on match day. Paul Twine has been terrific in managing the schedules and he has also secured BC cricket another year in Turf City. David Bennett, as the treasurer, has kept us out of the red zone. Overall a great season where we played: 25 matches including vets league 8 wins and 5 washouts We gave 50 lads a bat this season and 48 rolled their arms over Batting Honours: David Hosking – 376, he also took the batting honours in the vets league beating the next guy by a mile and more! Ross Marsh – 263 Shane Sampson – 257 Bowling Honours: A great competition between Paul and David towards the end of the year to see who takes the bowling honours. Last game of the season saw Paul coming out all guns blazing. With unplayable line and length, he overtook David by 2 wickets. Paul Twine – 22 David Bennett – 20 David Hosking – 11 Meet the new Committee for 2016 Season and I wish the BC cricket section a wonderful 2016! Convenor: Todd Buck Fixtures Secretary: Paul Twine Treasurer: David Bennett Match Organizer/ Captains: Paul McNee and Shane Sampson Members’ Secretary: Gaurav Lakhanpal
