2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, As we enter the final stretch of the year, I hope that 2017 has, so far, been good to you and your family. Mr. Andrew Christon has taken up the reins as General Manager of The British Club. On behalf of us all, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Andrew and wish him, with our support, every success in his new role. Please take the opportunity to stop and talk to Andrew as you see him around the club. Andrew is a 28-year veteran of the hospitality industry. He started his career at Claridge’s and The Dorchester Hotels in London before moving on to manage various clubs and restaurants in the UK, Russia, the UAE and various countries in Asia. With more than twelve years of experience in Asia and an extensive in-depth knowledge gained throughout his career, Andrew is well positioned to lead the team at The British Club over the coming years. The club’s Annual General Meeting will be held in the Elizabeth Suite on Thursday, 23rd of November. We would like to invite all members with voting rights to come and be part of the governance of the club. In addition to attending the AGM, if any member has served on a sub-committee for at least one full year and has the inclination and passion to stand for election to the Main Committee, we would be delighted to hear from you. Picking up from something mentioned last month, the club is still offering the opportunity for members to have a period of complimentary membership of a sports section. Do take advantage of this opportunity to better understand what is on offer and how you can get more involved in sport at the club, at any level. Finally, we are keen to hear feedback and new idea from members on all aspects of the club’s operations. There are many channels for communication, whether directly to the team or via comment cards etc. I am also sure that Andrew, as he builds his knowledge of the club, would like to hear directly from members. Alternatively, if you would like to send me an email (president@ britishclub.org.sg), please do. On behalf of the Club, I wish everybody a healthy and happy month ahead. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

General Manager

in the Spotlight

We are delighted to introduce our new General Manager of The British Club, Mr Andrew Christon.

1) Please tell us more about yourself.

I am originally from the same town as British explorer and navigator Captain James Cook. A town in England called Middlesbrough which is a large industrial town on the south bank of the River Tees in North Yorkshire, north-east England. These days perhaps better known for its widely supported football team. I spent my formative years working in Hotels in London and joined the Club industry with the opening of the London Capital Club back in the 90’s. From there I have opened and managed Clubs in Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Japan, Dubai, China and Kenya.

Head of Sales Ronnie Ng 6410 1100 membership@britishclub.org.sg

2) Why did you choose to go into the hospitality industry?

When I was a child we lived in Borneo due to my father’s work, every six months we got to go to Singapore for five days R&R. We used to stay at the old Holiday Inn on Scott’s Road. I loved it… warm welcomes by a giant doorman, grand marble lobby, barbeques by the swimming pool, my brothers and I got to order room service and enjoy large buffet breakfasts, numerous knickerbocker glory’s and banana splits! The influence was so strong, I decided to pursue a career in hotels. Fast forward 35 years, a few months ago I came to Singapore to interview at The British Club. They booked me into the Club’s partner hotel, the Royal Plaza on Scott’s. When I pulled up in the taxi I realised it was the very hotel from my childhood that influenced me to go into the hospitality industry.

3) Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that nobody knows.

During my career I have had the opportunity and privilege to serve many members of various royal families, dignitaries, heads of state and celebrities. The one that draws the most interest is my time as a Private Butler to Michael Jackson during his Dangerous World Tour.

4) Lastly, can you share with us your future goals for yourself and The British Club? It is a huge privilege for me to take over the management reins here at The British Club in Singapore, our out-going GM Sean Boyle, BEM has done a fantastic job over the past seven years at the helm and I look forward to building upon all that has been achieved. Our goal is and remains “To be the leading international club in Singapore, exceeding the expectations of our Members and their Families.” The Club is owned by our Members who, through an annually elected President and Main Committee, provide the strategic direction for myself and our wonderful team. The Club is in good shape financially and in terms of number of Members, which has allowed significant reinvestment back into the Club facility over the years, most recently with the multi-million dollar renovations of the gym and the Windsor Arms and various upgrades throughout the Club. I will be working closely with the Development Committee and helping to execute the ten-year plan. My first major project starts next month under the guidance of the Info Communications Committee with the modernisation of the Club’s IT infrastructure. This will include a complete overhaul of our front and back office software systems, a new web site and an exciting new member’s app, which will ensure the Club leads the way in this smart city-nation.

ARE YOU MAKING THE MOST OF THE NEW RESIDENCE NIL-RATE BAND? By Martin Rimmer, Tax Manager at The Fry Group

There have been a number of adverse UK tax changes in recent years, many of which are related to UK residential property. However, there is one change in particular that came into force recently that bucks the trend and is, for the most part, a positive for UK property owners. Since 6 April 2009, the Inheritance Tax (IHT) nil rate band has remained at £325,000, whilst UK house prices have continued to increase. This has pushed more and more families into the scope of IHT than previously. The 2010 Conservative Party manifesto first broached the idea of increasing the IHT threshold and while the coalition government with the Lib Dems meant that this wasn’t possible, the 2015 manifesto raised this again. From 6 April 2017, a new residence nil rate band (RNRB) was made available for the first time, potentially allowing millions of people to remove their family homes from IHT. However research from Old Mutual Wealth showed at the time that very few people are aware of the change and how it works. 70% of over 1000 UK residents with over £50,000 in wealth surveyed had no idea about this change, and of those who did, very few knew about the details of how it works. In a nutshell, this is a new inheritance tax allowance aimed at people who are looking to pass on property to “direct” descendants, when they die. The value of the residence nil-rate amount is £100,000 in the tax year 2017/18, rising by £25,000 each tax year until it reaches £175,000 in the tax year for 2021. It will then increase in line with the consumer prices index (CPI) annually. The introduction of the residence nil rate band means that a married couple could benefit from an additional allowances of up to £350,000 by the 2020/21 tax year, saving up to £140,000 in tax. At that point a married couple could have a combined IHT allowance of £1m (£325,000 plus £175,000, per person). However, like most tax-related issues, it’s never that straightforward. Here are some things to bear in mind when considering how best to use this new allowance: • The new allowance is transferable to a surviving spouse, just like the current Nil Rate Band, allowing them to pass on wealth tax-free, up to £1million in some cases. • To use the allowance, the following conditions have to be met: a. The estate owner must have deceased b. Their estate must contain an interest in a current or former main home c. It can only be passed to only direct descendants – for instance children, step children, adoptive children, and grandchildren. It’s important to note that this doesn’t apply to estates being left to nephews, nieces or siblings. • The allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 in the estate that exceeds £2m. When a couple’s estate reaches £2.7m, there will be no RNRB available. The value of the death estate for these purposes is calculated by the total assets chargeable to IHT, less debts and liabilities, but before other reliefs such as Business Property Relief. • The value of the estate excludes other assets held in trust, so the use of IHT planning trusts may well increase. • RNRB only applies to one property that has been a residence of the deceased at one stage in their life, and cannot be applied to properties that were never a residence, for instance buy-to-let properties or properties bought for children. • If you have multiple properties as part of an estate, then benefactors will have to decide which property it applies to at the time of the state’s probate process. • Taxpayers who dispose of a residence either entirely or in the process of downsizing, are still entitled to the RNRB. The relief will be available provided that the property would have qualified for relief, if it had been retained, and provided that the taxpayer passes on the proceeds to their descendants, via their death estate. For the vast majority of people who are looking to minimise the amount of IHT paid by their loved ones, this is a very valuable new relief. While the RNRB has less relevance to high net worth individuals, it certainly is a welcome break for many property owners looking to leave assets to their direct descendants.

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan

FRIDAY 13th

Friday 13th is considered the unluckiest date of the year. It appears at least once and at most three times annually. This year, 2017, the inauspicious date has two appearances, in January and October. Taking its name from the mythological Norse goddess Frigg (meaning ‘love’), Friday is generally loved, being the last day of the working week for many. TGIF! Reasons for combining Friday with the number 13 into an unlucky scenario abound. Possibly the most well-known relates to there being 12 disciples plus Jesus Christ at the table at the Last Supper, when Jesus was betrayed to the authorities, leading to His death, on a Friday. A witch coven is a meeting of witches, with an ancient European idea that they gathered in cliques of 13. Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, depicted such a gathering in his poem ‘Tam o’ Shanter’ about a drunken farmer’s encounter with a coven. Some people take great lengths to allay their superstitions, including refusing to leave home for fear of coming across bad luck. Travellers postpone journeys. Many refrain from walking under ladders, spilling salt or opening umbrellas indoors. Did you know there is no Formula 1 racing car with the number 13? Not numbering floors in high-rise buildings, and hotel bedrooms, with that number are common. The term for a phobia of Friday 13th is paraskavedekatriaphobia. Whether we choose to be daunted or not by this superstition, let’s touch wood and keep our fingers crossed, just to be sure! Photographs, Raelene Tan SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 15

MEMBER IN THE

SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to present Martin White and his wife, Lily White. Martin joined the Club in January 2012. He is currently working as a Senior Principal Engineer (Signals) for the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Martin contributes to the Club by assisting as a Member on the Club’s Membership and Rules Committee. 1) How did you find out about The British Club, and what made you join us? I was invited to The British Club by a former work colleague in 1989. I wasn’t living permanently in Singapore at the time then, so I didn’t join at that time. Once I was a full-time resident in Singapore, another colleague invited me to the Club and I joined soon after that. I joined the Club mainly because I was very impressed by the quality of the food and the good and friendly service. It’s truly a home from home. 2) Can you tell us more about your line of work? I work as a Senior Principal Engineer (Signals) for the Land Transport Authority (LTA). When I first came to Singapore in 1987, I worked for the company that designed and supplied the Signalling system for the North South - East West lines in Singapore. This was Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co. Ltd. I have worked on the design of the Signalling system in the Westinghouse office in Chippenham, Wiltshire in England. Just before the system went into operation in 1987, I came to Singapore as part of the team that tested and commissioned the system prior to entry into service. I worked for three months on 12 hour night shifts, working 7 nights per week. 3) What made you join the signaling industry? Railway Signalling is safety critical work and the most important feature of the Signalling system is to keep trains spaced at a safe distance from each other and to prevent collisions between trains. This is all the more important because trains can’t steer away from an obstruction and require quite a long distance to stop in. A career in Railway Signalling is very satisfying. After 40 years in the business, I still enjoy going to work everyday. My work still involves a mixture of office based work and night work. At night time, we do tests and modifications on the Signalling system. These can only be done at night time, when no trains are running. 4) How do you cope with your busy schedule, whilst being involved on The British Club’s Membership and Rules Committee? It is sometimes a challenge to juggle the conflicting demands of work, and socialising. In our spare time, my wife and I enjoy relaxing at Windsor Arms of The British Club. We are regular attendees at Bingo night. In addition, I am a member of the Membership and Rules Committee. All in all, it makes for a pretty full schedule. There is never a dull moment.

The night was all set with the fiercest battle in town; The British Club vs The American Club. With all jokes aside, this friendly match was a graceful invitation by The American Club. The British Club team was led by Kurt Tan, our very own Catering Sales Manager. Our vivacious team gathered on the pitch, albeit all prepared for the fun but were also competitive to say the least. Team American Club was led by Muhamad Huzir; boasting a squad of robust and energetic men. The whistle went off at 7.00pm and the friendly match started with both teams tussling to get a feel of the soccer pitch. However, the players took no time to acclimatise to the pitch and got right into the heat of the battle. In the midst of all the jostling, the whistle was blown and the half-time score stood at a 1-1 draw. A similar second half followed as the pitch was filled with fun and laughter. After all, this match provided an opportunity for the players to unwind after a long day of work. With many twist and turns throughout the match, The British Club managed to surge ahead. The match ended on a joyous note as the teams gathered together in appreciation for the match. The full-time score stood at 7-2 in favour of The British Club but what truly mattered was the fun the men had throughout the match. The British Club would like to thank The American Club for the invitation. To more exciting games in the future! THE BRITISH CLUB

For more than 40 years he worked as ‘Steward and Page’ at Clarence House the Queen Mother’s residence and became known as Backstairs Billy. He passed away a few years after the Queen Mother, taking with him all his secrets, or so everyone thought …

Dingle Pot Still Distillery Vodka @ $95.00 per bottle

The still is charged with 500 litres of the finest, purest, grain alcohol and is then distilled for a fifth and final time. Dingle Distillery Vodka is most unusual in being quintuple distilled. Wine Gala Dinner Friday, 24 November

$118.00+ Wine Connoisseur & Gourmet Club Member $128.00+ per Member • $138.00+ per Guest What better way to enjoy Italian Wines with authentic Italian food prepared by an Italian Chef? Originating from the Piedmont region in north-west Italy, Chef Osvaldo Forlino remembered fondly his first lesson in cooking began on the lap of his loving mother, Mama Forlino, as a little boy. Growing up with a closely knitted family in the family farm in his hometown Piedmonte, Italy, chef Osvaldo is influenced with using only the freshest, best ingredients in his cooking and serving food with plenty of love, just as his mother would cook for him. Chef Osvaldo’s father opened the first humble family restaurant, “Forlino”, in Alessandria, Italy in 1948. From 1988 to 1995, before taking over and manage the family restaurant, Osvaldo and his wife, Patrizia earned the Michelin Star working in Da Guido Restaurant in Costigliole d’Asti, Piedmont, and during the stint, they cooked lunch for former French President Jacques Chiraq in Turin, Italy. When they took over the “Forlino” restaurant, the satellite channel Gambero Rosso came in Montacuto to make a show with the French 3 Michelin-starred chef Paul Bocuse tasting their dishes for a week. Later, together with Italian celebrity chef Gianfranco Vissani, they collaborate a Christmas Cooking TV Show on the national television. Determined to spread the flavours of his hometown, Piedmonte, Chef Osvaldo travelled to Singapore in September 2005 to work as Italian Chef de Cuisine at Grand Hyatt, Singapore. Encouraged by the love and appreciation for Italian food in Singapore, he went to set-up and lead two award winning fine dining Italian restaurants, Forlino @ One Fullerton in August 2008 and Osvaldo Ristorante Italiano in October 2009. He moved on to set his own restaurant No Menu - Osvaldo Forlino Family’s Kitchen in Singapore with the focus of going back to his roots and create home-made Italian cuisines which are well loved by generations of Italians. SPORTS & FITNESS 53 SQUASH:

COSMO KICK OFF By Andrew Vine & The Boaster The second half of the year means that the Singapore SRA competition is out of the way (our E-graders finished a creditable 5th out of 11 in their league – well done team) and it’s time for the Cosmo league. This is a rather more sociable competition featuring mostly expat clubs, handicapped matches and friendly post-match rehydration. This year’s team is co-captained by Jamie Salamon and Ben Kiggell. We started our season away at the Tanglin Club and ended up being part of a classic Cosmo tussle. Matt Gyde was first on court against an opponent who used his great experience (trying to be nice . . . he was very old) to play a succession of trick shots, but Matt powered away to a 3-0 win. Meanwhile, on the neighbouring court, captain Jaimie played Jason – a former BC player who has now taken up the colours (Tanglin white) of the enemy. Happily the skipper squeezed out a 3-2 win, and we were up 2-0. Andrew Vine was on next, after an exhausting weekend watching the SEA Games under the sun in KL (to much pre-hydration, Andrew? Ed). He fancied his chances with a 10 handicap but started with too many mistakes and quickly found himself two games down. Unperturbed, he got the proverbial finger out and out-manoeuvred his opponent to win 3-2 overall. 3-0 so far! Meanwhile, James Pickles’ match swung back and forth and also ended in five sets, with plenty of thrills of along the way before James went down 2-3. Last up was James Bauley - the only thing standing between eight very hungry men and the famous TC butter chicken and fish masala! Sadly for those with rumbling stomachs (but happily for those who enjoy a tough squash match) this was another 2-3 result with James, arguably fittest man in BC Cosmo, looking shattered at the end after a hard loss. Four out of the five rubbers went to 3-2 and we came out with a 3-2 match win to start the season in style. We hope that’s a sign of great things to come.

54 SPORTS & FITNESS RUGBY:

COME BACK TO RUGBY WITH THE BRITISH CLUB By Dave Scott

How did you get involved in the Rugby Section?

I played a lot of rugby when I was younger but had not picked up a ball for quite a few years until I moved to Hong Kong in 2013 and got involved at Kowloon RFC. The joy of rugby however is that pretty much anyone can play at some level and it was surprisingly easy to get back to playing again, even as I was nudging 40, and I had some great seasons there playing in the social sides with guys aged from 18 to 60. When I moved to Singapore in January, finding a club was near the top of my list and I when I found out the British Club had started a rugby section, I signed straight up. It has been great fun so far. We have guys and girls in the Section with a range of ages and experience from fellow ‘old boys’ like me through to kids just learning the game. Rugby is a physical sport but that should not deter anyone who has not played before from joining the section and giving it a go – for a start, there is no obligation to play contact rugby at all, as we spend plenty of time on touch rugby, fitness and general rugby skills. But the contact side is easily learned, and through coaching and practice, it is safe for all shapes, sizes and levels of fitness. For anyone who has played previously who is thinking of making a comeback, I think the set-up we have at the club is perfect to ease back into playing - and I can assure you that the standard of play is not going to be a stretch for anyone! The weekly training, which is usually on the Swiss Club field, is a mix of rugby skills, fitness and touch rugby which brings it all together.

What have been the highlights so far?

One of the great things about playing social rugby in this part of the world is the opportunity to tour. There are several 10-a-side rugby tournaments across Asia spread throughout the year which offer the chance to play some games against similar teams from across the region and enjoy the local sights (and local beer!). The Rugby section sent teams to the Bali 10s and Bangkok 10s competitions last year – Bangkok was a couple of weeks after I joined the section and proved to be a fantastic way to get involved and get to know everyone, as well as playing some games against teams from Thailand, Australia and Japan amongst others. We did not fare too well in the competition unfortunately but a great time was had by all and we played some good rugby.

Off the field highlights

It has been an exciting few months for the sport globally and we’ve made the most of it through the social side of the Rugby Section. The Section hosted a terrific event for the final round of the Six Nations – we had over 180 people in the Elizabeth Suite for a great evening which included the three games back to back on the big screens, curry buffet and free flow bar, and some entertaining banter from Neil Best, James Forrester and Will Skinner, all ex-professional and international players. As a Scotland fan, another highlight was the Scotland v Italy test at the National Stadium in June, which was the first time a Tier 1 test has been played in Singapore. We had a bus from the British Club to and from the ground for the match and some of the guys managed to get themselves on TV. And of course we had some memorable afternoons with a big crowd of all ages in Scores to watch the matches live during the Lions tour in July.

Looking forward to this season

We got off to a strong start in our inaugural season and the plan for this year is to go from strength to strength as we continue to grow in numbers. We’re planning some tours for 10s tournaments with Vietnam, Cambodia and Bali potentially on the radar, and of course looking to play more competitive games here in Singapore as well. Our goal for hopefully next season is to be able to enter a British Club team in the more ‘social’ division of the Singapore domestic league, but as we build towards that, we have arrangements for members to get contact playing time through an alliance with another local team. We’re also looking at entering teams into some of the many Touch Rugby competitions which are hugely popular in Singapore. We started August 12th so I would encourage anyone even vaguely interested to come down and give it a go on Saturday afternoon.

SPORTS & FITNESS 55 CRICKET:

CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Todd Buck In what is now a quite rare event, the team assembled for an away match at Ceylon Sports Club (CSC) for a match against the Misfits. The CSC is a great ground on Balestier Road with fantastic facilities to sit back and watch the match Captain Paul McNee won the toss and decided to send the opposition to bat on a hot and sunny Singapore afternoon. The Misfits started solidly against some very non-BC bowling attack - straight and well pitched up by Roger and Rohit. The outfield was quite fast and the Misfits progressed well to be 23 off 6 before Rohit struck with a caught behind. The Misfits progressed to be 69 at drinks (15 overs) and were taking about a target score of 170. A change of bowling kept the scoring to a minimum with overs from Mark Prendiville and Matt Miller The Misfits progressed to 2/83 off 17 including a great innings from Ash Perrott of 34. Things then started to go South for the Misfits. The Captain then brought on Rohan Persaud and himself for a double Bowling change Captain McNee demolished the Misfits middle order by taking 5/22 off 5 and Rohan 2/16 off 5. McNee’s Bowling was well supported by the BC fielding included one stunning, diving catch by Mark Stafford. Ironically the batsman who was caught was an on loan BC player - David Bennett. Following the Captains spell, Mark Stafford was brought on and took 2/6. The final score was only 123 which was seen as below par and well below their target on 170 talked about after 15 overs BC opened with the in form batsman Ross Marsh and the irregular attendee Richard Wall. With the pitch offering some variable bounce, the start was quite slow. At 10 runs, Richard Wall was bowled by a good delivery. Marshy was joined by Mark Prendiville and the pair worked the ball around taking the score to 26 before Prendi succumbed to a rash shot and was caught. Mark Stafford joined Marshy and opened with a lovely 4 and an innings that promised so much. The two took the score along and Marshy got to 32 and retired with Todd Buck joining Stafford. These two took the score along with Staff retiring on 12 off 30 suffering the effects of a long cycle ride in the morning. Wade joined Todd before Todd retired on 31 off 19. The innings wound up quickly with some sixes by Matt Miller and Wade. BC made the 2/123 off the 19 overs allowing the beers to start early The Man of the Match was Captain McNee who took the 5 for 21 - commonly known as a Michelle Pfeiffer..
