MICHAEL PLATER By Robert Brokenmouth
Michael Plater is returning to Adelaide. I was a bit concerned he might not returned as the last time he played here he got cut while playing and there was blood all over his guitar. The set list was still tacky when I got it, but it’s one of my most treasured possessions. If you’ve not been lucky enough to see him, I can’t help you. Here’s warning, Michael Plater is one of the most arresting and absorbing players around. What is it about Adelaide which pulls you back here? Who will you be playing with this time? “Adelaide has always treated me really well, I’ve had some great nights over there. It’s a really good scene in a lot of ways, really supportive, with Three D Radio, BSide Magazine, and things like that. This time around I’ll be supporting Ripley Hood and Kelly Hewson at Hotel Metro. Ripley and Kelly are ex-Adelaide boys who live in Melbourne these days. “Both of them used to play in early ’80s Adelaide cult rockers Gun Control and Kelly used to run Dominator Records over there. They’ve got a new band in the works, Brando Rising, but they’ll be playing as a duo this time around. “As for me, I’ll be joined by the 4

“A song like The Officer’s Mess on my last album, Mythologies, which references things like spiritualism, hypnotism and resurrectionists (19th century grave robbers who dug up corpses to sell to medical schools), definitely comes out of that headspace. “I hope so. I think the music you make should, in some sense, reflect your own geographical surroundings, and I’ve always believed you should write about your own experiences. THE HEGGARTIES The Heggarties by Robert Dunstan Adelaide Hill-based Americana act The Heggarties are about to launch their debut album so BSide Magazine enjoyed a chat to three of its members – Paul Heggarty, Wren Heggarty and Steve Lennox – over a couple of dark ales and several packets of chips one dark and stormy evening in the front bar of the Grace Emily Hotel.
as Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle and all that. “So we got away with playing covers for quite a while until Leah Chapman, who was then working at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, pointed out that she couldn’t really book us anymore,” he laughs. “She said, ‘Guys, we are basically a live music venue presenting bands doing original songs’.
joined the band,” Steve then pipes up. “When I joined – probably in about 2010 – and became part of the gang, I kind of immersed myself in those influences.” “We now have four songwriters in the band and five singers,” Wren says. “And we all sing each other’s songs as we work out what works best. It’s whose voice fits the song best.”
“We therefore have Leah to thank “And while The Heggarties is made up for making us start writing our own of six individuals with different influsongs which we’d kinda wanted to ences and backgrounds, as a band it all Paul begins by saying that the band do anyway,” Paul adds. “Wren wrote comes together,” Steve says. “And that’s initially came into being in 2009 when a song or two and then I started writ- what helps make a successful band. That line-up is Wren (vocals) and Paul (acoustic guitar and vocals) alongside Steve Lennox (electric guitars and vocals), Tim Bodman (bass), Max Tulysewski (drums and vocals) and Paul Cooper (banjo and mandolin). “We had Dylan O’Brien, originally from Whiplash, on drums but expressed that he wanted out but kindly agreed to play any gigs with us until we found someone else,” Paul says. “And that somehow went on for a year and a half.” “And it was funny because when we eventually did put out a call for a new drummer Max had responded but we didn’t come across his message until about a month later,” Wren laughs. “And then we saw it and all thought, ‘Wow! It’s that wonder kid, Max!’ We knew him from Bearded Gypsy Band and knew what a great drummer he was.” “And it’s funny because Max’s song, Shannon, the first single, almost didn’t make it onto the album,” Paul says. “It was just a bit too punk – like the kind of emo stuff he writes for his own band Superdose Gangway – and didn’t fit our sound. We’d worked with it for some time and were about to toss it out when Tim, our bass player, joked that we should try it in waltz time. “We did and it worked,” he continues with a laugh, “and, from almost being tossed in the bin, it’s become one of our favourites.” “We ran it through The Heggarties’ fil-
ter and turned it into what it is now,” Wren adds with a wry chuckle. “And that’s the great thing about Max. He’s much younger than the rest of us but fits into the band really well.”
and we chose Mixmasters because we thought if we were going to do an album we may as well get it right.”
“It all came down to logistics,” Paul notes, “and we just thought we’d be better off financially doing something here. We just couldn’t afford the expense even though I’d worked with Leigh in the past with other bands I was in.”
“Once we had a list of songs we wanted to record, it was pretty easy,” Steve says. “We then really worked on them for a month before going to Mixmasters because we didn’t want to be dicking around and wasting money.”
‘We first went up there with the intention of just doing a demo,” Wren Original plans to record their debut says, “but I guess we fell in love with in Tamworth, NSW, with producer the place. And because we’d gigged Leigh Ivan (of The Re-Mains and the songs for quite a while, we knew Sarah Carrol & The Left Wing) didn’t pretty much what we wanted to do come to fruition. without too much messing around.”
“And when I first approached Mick about recording, he immediately liked our name,” Paul laughs. “He embraced it straight away and had some kind of idea about it being a loose, ramshackle recording and that was exactly what we were going for. We already had that idea ourselves and knew we wanted to pretty much record live in the studio.” “We basically just wanted to record what happens at our live shows and have all the different personalities come through,” Wren concludes. “And Mick certainly captured that.”
“So we all sat around one night listening to a whole heap of local CDs not knowing where they’d been recorded,” Wren says. “At the end of it, the ones we really liked had mostly been done at Mixmasters with Mick Wordley. They had such a depth and warmth.” “We didn’t dare dream of recording at Mixmasters,” Paul says. “but when we knew we were ready to record it came down to a couple of studios

THE SOUND OF FALLING STARS By Robert Dunstan Adelaide’s Cameron Goodall, a founding member of multiple ARIA Award winning band The Audreys, has spent the last few years in Sydney where he has been featuring as Zazu in the long-running musical The Lion King. The Bendigo-born actor and musician is now returning ‘home’ to feature in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival’s world premiere production of The Sound Of Falling Stars which has been written by Robyn Archer who is also directing it. “Robyn approached me about being in The Sound Of Falling Stars as she’d done a show back in 1979 called A Star Is Torn that focussed on fallen female performers and wanted to write something about male performers,” Cameron says of his involvement during a rehearsal break. I recall seeing A Star Is Torn at Festival Theatre and still have the program somewhere and remember that it focussed on the tragic lives of Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, Frances Farmer and more. “And, yeah, Judy Garland too,” Cameron says. “And Robyn has had the idea of doing a male version of A Star Is Torn for a long, long time so when she asked me to be involved it was easy to say, ‘Yes, let’s do it’. “And because the show covers such a lot of singers with such a lot of styles, Robyn wanted someone with a strong acting background who could also cover a lot of genres,” he continues. ‘Y’know, someone who could sing a Hank Williams’ song but also do rock. So I’ll be doing Highway To Hell and then doing something oper-

and it’s definitely not that,’ Cameron announces. “Musically, it has a really different approach to the material and it’s like putting a different lens on the songs.” Cameron is no longer involved in The Lion King which is continuing its lengthy Sydney run. “After three years or so I took some time off just to be a stay at home dad with the kids really,” he says. “I had a really good run with The Lion King and it was fun to do and I have so many great memories and was very thankful for it because, having two young kids, it was great to have a stable income for a few years. “But it became time to draw a line under The Lion King and I am now really enjoying focussing on brand new projects such as this one,” Cameron indicates.
There are plans to tour The Sound Of Falling “Chronologically, it starts off with Hank Stars with a performance in New Zealand Williams who died in the early ’50s and goes already booked. through to Kurt Cobain,” he says. ““The narrative tracks and explains how and why “We’ll see how it goes at Adelaide Cabaret all these guys died – and Festival and then take a look at it to see if it may there’s about 30 of them need any minor changes,” – and while some of Cameron says. “But, yeah, “You begin to re alise them are covered quite the plan is to get it up and that the deaths quickly, others are exrunning as a touring show.” were becoming more plored in more depth. and Cameron is also looking at more gruesom e b ecause “Along the way you tackling a solo album later it starts out wit h some begin to realise that the this year. accidental death deaths were becoms and ing more and more “I’ve written so many songs then there are guys like gruesome because it over the last few years but Sam Cooke, M arvin starts out with some just haven’t had the time to Gaye and John accidental deaths and do anything with them,” CamLennon then there are guys eron sighs. “So I want to have who were murd ered.” like Sam Cooke, Mara crack at doing an album as I vin Gaye and John have amassed so many songs it Lennon who were murdered and would be worth turning them then there were the ones who were self-deinto a record. structing such as Sid Jim Morrison, Elvis and Kurt Cobain. “But I’m yet to decide on when, where and with whom I’ll do that yet,” he concludes with “It’s a big, broad list of people but, Sid Via laugh. cious included, the basic shape of the show is that their deaths became more and more intense,” Cameron then adds. “And some The Sound Of Falling Stars runs as patterns emerge in The Sound Of Falling Stars about their part of Adelaide Cabaret Festival parental relationships. CHURCHILL (M) ***
Aussie director Jonathan Teplitzky’s fifth film (after Better Than Sex, Gettin’ Square, Burning Man and the also-English The Railway Man) isn’t quite a biopic of ‘Win’ Churchill as it only takes place in the four days before D-Day in June 1944, and it’s a more human look at this flawed and despairing 70ish year old than we usually see in movies (think Timothy Spall’s funny reading in The King’s Speech, for example). And, perhaps, it isn’t quite as powerful as Teplitzky and screenwriter Alex von Tunzelmann were hoping, although distinguished character actor Brian Cox is strong as ‘Winnie’, and mostly keeps his ham under control - even if his Scottish accent pops up from time to time. A quick glimpse of an older, haunted, post-WWII Churchill opens the film before we cut back to the build-up to the D-Day landings, and our subject is shown as getting on, hitting the bottle, arguing with his long-suffering wife Clementine (Miranda Richardson) and exhausted (after all, a subtitle informs us that this is the 1736th day of the War). Winston

knows that the impending attempt to drive the Nazis from France and beyond will result in appalling loss of life, and he certainly knows a thing or two about war as well, having served in a few. Troubled further by his role in the events at Gallipoli in 1915, Churchill goes up against the leaders of the American military, and there are some very fine scenes as he grapples with no less than Dwight Eisenhower, who’s played with typical gravitas by John Slattery. However, they refuse to listen to his concerns and carry on regardless, while King George VI (James Purefoy demonstrating the stammer that formed the basis of The King’s Speech) is similarly sidelined, and yet Winston continues on in his quest to find some - any - other way. Worth it for Brian (who put on a heap of weight for the role and scrunches up his jowls to emulate Winston’s famously piggy visage), this is perhaps most pointed in its subtle commentary on modern warfare, as Churchill agonises about older men in armchairs who send young men to faraway places to be slaughtered. And yes, that does sound all too familiar…

BAYWATCH (MA) **
The original smallscreen Baywatch (1989 - 2001) was simply awful but hugely popular, mostly as it was untouchable: everyone knew it was terrible, but no one was watching it for the goofy plots and dire acting, because what they really wanted was to see Pamela Anderson and other blonde babes jogging along beaches in jiggly slo-mo.

RADIO BIRDMAN Radio Birdman by Robert Dunstan Radio Birdman and Died Pretty have teamed up for a national tour which will mark the first time the bands have toured together although the association goes a back a long way as BSide Magazine discovered during a telephone interview with Radio Birdman’s American-born guitarist Deniz Tek. When we spoke, it was just a couple of days after he’d returned from a tour of Europe and the US to promote his solo album, Mean Old Twister.
do something a bit special and got Died Pretty on board.” Deniz says. “Our management thought that having a band from the ‘70s and a band from the ‘80s on the same bill was a good idea. So while it’s not a festival as such, it’ll great to have two bands on the bill. “And it’s a dual headline thing because we’ll be taking it in turns and no one has priority,” he says before adding that in our city, Radio Birdman will wind up the festivities.
Also on the bill for Adelaide will be Kim Salmon in solo mode who has an association with singer Ron Peno from Died Pretty due to their work “But I’ve already got the post-tour blues as duo under the name The Darling and can’t wait to get back out there Downs. again,” Deniz announces with a laugh. “It was a fairly long overseas stretch “And we’ve always enjoyed playing – in Europe it was 34 gigs in 32 days – the Gov,” Deniz then states. “It’s and I only just got back but am ready to always a near riot there whenever go again. we play and the place is filled with people who like good rock’n’roll.” “And the overseas tour went well,” he reflects. “We didn’t lose anybody along Did Radio Birdman ever cross paths the way and managed to pay all the ex- with Died Pretty all those years ago? penses. The best thing you can do as a musician is to show people your influences and pass them on. “If we can say we did that, it’s a pretty good legacy to pass on,” he suggests. The challenge is what to leave out because we love all that stuff. “But you can only do 20 or 21 songs on any given night,” Deniz reasons. “And the joy comes from messing around with the songs. We are always thinking of new twists while not messing with any of the iconic parts that people want to hear.”

LEWIS WATSON Lewis Watson by Robert Dunstan The UK’s Lewis Watson, who has toured this country in the past, is regarded as an up and coming young star due to the strength of his debut album, the morning, which he has now successfully followed with a second offering, midnight. BSide Magazine enjoyed a fun chat to the young musician over the telephone recently about the fact he’s excited to be heading back to our shores with his band. “Australia is slowly becoming like my second home as I’ve been there about five or six times now,” Lewis begins. “I absolutely love it there and my sister has just moved to Perth so that gives me all the more reason to keep coming back. “And you’re from Adelaide, right,” he asks with a laugh. “That’s where they have Farmers Union Iced Coffee. I could drink that all day.” Lewis has had an interesting career – he began by casually dropping videos to YouTube under the name HolyLoowis – and it’s one he’s gradually getting used to. “It certainly has been interesting and I’ve been at it for eight years now,” he says, “I’m really just trying to make a name for myself and improve, as a musician and a human being, 26
“And I loved listening to metal,” he laughs. “But there was a real variety of music around “And I think my second album, midnight, has me and for my birthday I asked for a guitar. Lewis is playing a Fender Jaguar guitar in the clip. “It’s like the guitar Kurt Cobain used to play but mine’s a kind of copy of his signature model,” he says. “It has very loud pick-ups – way too loud for my amp – but has a very clean sound that you can really push.

“It’s a fairly new model but certainly has that vintage feel,” he says. “But it’s great and will have to do until I can afford to
Lewis then goes on to say his first guitar came to him on his 16th birthday. “I’d always wanted to play music because I grew up in a family where there was always music around,” he says. “My dad listened to a lot of reggae and The Rolling Stones, my mum loved whatever was on the radio, my elder sister loved Justin Timberlake and my brother liked rap.
“And they’ve been great because they sign artists for the long haul and that was a factor that really interested me,” Lewis says. “I looked at their roster and it’s filled with very, very talented people. So that excited me. “And when we had a meeting, I could tell they were really quite passionate about the whole album,” he enthuses. “They didn’t listen to it and say, ‘Track four is a good song. That should be the single’. “Cooking Vinyl were really interested in the album as a whole and not just looking for a hit single with 10 other songs thrown onto the record,” Lewis concludes.

Lewis then announced.
Who wants to play around? I recently had the pleasure of interviewing up and coming UK musician Lewis Watson over the telephone about his upcoming Australian jaunt to promote the recent release of his second album, midnight. During the course of the conversation which, due to time differences, happened late in the evening for me with it being early morning in the UK for Lewis, he professed a great love for Farmers Union Iced Coffee as they don’t have it in the UK and also mentioned that he often liked to play around.
I was aghast at his candid confession until realising that Lewis meant he liked to play a round of golf. “I love playing golf in Australia because it can be so whacky,” he laughed. “I’ve played on city fairways in Australia with kangaroos hopping around on either side of the green. “And, if you hit the rough, you don’t dare go looking for your ball in case you get bitten by a dangerous animal or something. That never happens in England. “And I love that in Adelaide you can buy schooners,”
As I was wearing my naughty nautical hat at the time of the interview, I had immediately thought Lewis was referring to the fact that Adelaide was a great place in which to purchase a sailing ship with two or more masts with the foremost being typically smaller than the main one. But no. He was talking about schooners of beer. “Yeah, schooners of beer,” Lewis laughed. “I love schooners because, unlike a pint that can go warm, with a schooner you can be always drinking a really cold beer.
I then looked at his beer and was shocked to see James was drinking from a tiny wee butcher glass which holds less than half a pint of actual beer. “Ah, I’ve just ordered a cab to take me to airport,” James responded. “And I know from experience that if I order a pint, a cab will come.
“And, for me, always having cold beer is a much better experience than getting down to the last third of a pint and realising that your beer has gone warm.”
“But with one of these,” he said pointing to the 200ml glassy container, “when the cab comes I can just knock it all back in one go.”
I’d then been tempted to say to young Lewis, “Perhaps you should learn to drink a bit faster’, but quickly thought better of it.
Which James did when, only a couple of seconds later, a cabbie popped his head into the Grace and said, “Cab for James to the airport.”
My conversation with Lewis did remind me, however, of strolling into the Grace Emily Hotel early one Wednesday evening to find the now sadly late James Cruickshank of The Cruel Sea and much more sitting at the bar.

Suffer The Evenue, who plan to record next year, came up with some great ideas for their video attack.

Superheist narrowed that lot down to three bands – Suffer The Evenue, Born Of Dust and Terminal Zero – and asked them to Raise Hell around town in an effort to secure the coveted spot. Each of the bands then set about putting together videos and, with decision day fast approaching, were each trying to outdo each other with often hilarious results as came to seen by the footage on their respective Facebook pages. When the day of the big announcement came, Superheist were more than happy to then declare that all three bands would be taking to the Fowler’s Live stage on the night of the gig.
“We then had a band meeting and decided what to do,” he laughs. “And the rest of it is just a blur because we were going into town and videoing stuff and then staying up until 3am franticly editing it to put it up first thing the next day. “And the whole process for us was a real kick up the arse as far as working together as a band to get something done,” Matt continues. “And I haven’t seen any videos – from all the bands involved for that matter – where everybody involved doesn’t have a huge smile of their face. “As dw [Norton] from Superheist said, ‘It’s not going to be all about the music, it all about how prepared you will be as a band to work together’,” he adds.
“It’s funny because we were in the process of organising a gig in Adelaide with Born Of Dust on that same night,” Dom, guitar player with Suffer The Evenue, laughs. “And then both bands saw Superheist announce on Facebook that they were looking for an opening act at Fowler’s Live that night. So we canned that idea and we both went after that slot.”

“And the Hitler thing one of our fans did using that footage from Downfall was just
pure gold and way out there,” he says. “And another video a friend sent of a Mexican guy laughing was also just too good not to use.” It was interesting to note that while there was much rivalry, each of the bands were wishing the others the very best of luck. “We’ve done shows with Born Of Dust so we know those lads and have become mates,” Dom from Suffer The Evenue says. “So, yeah, it was a friendly rivalry.” “That was probably one of the best things about it,” Born Of Dust’s Izzy says. “They say there’s often a bit of a war between bands in Adelaide but we think of other local bands as brothers.” “It may have been an intense competition,” Shamus says, “but at the end of the day we all like each of the other band’s stuff.” Matt from Terminal Zero reasons that the Superheist support has led to them being selected, alongside Baltimore Poet, to open for American rockers Trapt at the Governor Hindmarsh on Wednesday 5 July. “We’ve been around as a band for a while now but have never had any response from promoters about doing an international support gig,” he says. “So I think the attention the whole Superheist thing got has now opened a few doors in regard to all that.”
Superheist, now featuring Ezekiel Ox alongside founding member dw Norton, have announced their Raise Hell “So we saw Superheist’s post on Facebook national tour which will bring and immediately came up with some ideas,” them to Fowler’s Live, 68 Shamus announces. THE MUMMY The Mummy: Interview with Director Alex Kurtzman, by Mad Dog Bradley.
Alex Kurtzman [below] was visiting Sydney to publicise the new The Mummy (which has nothing to do with the Brendan-Fraser-starring series of pics) when we chatted with him, and while he admitted to being somewhat exhausted he nevertheless went into plenty of illuminating detail about working with Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, issues regarding FX and make-up, and no-longer-secret plans for a whole new run of film versions of ‘Universal Monster’ favourites. The Mummy is only your second feature film as director (after handling lots of TV and writing and/or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Amazing Spider-Man series), and it’s certainly most different from your People Like Us [2012], so how exactly did you get involved in such a production? “It is totally different, yes… Universal had come to me about doing The Mummy and I was really very excited about it as I’m a lifelong fan of the ‘Universal Monsters’ [usually listed as the Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man - who isn’t really a monster but 34
that’s okay - and The Creature From The Black Lagoon]. “I thought it would be interesting to try and come up with a really different take, and over time I’ve had the gift of being able to work with a whole lot of truly talented directors who were so generous and allowed me to watch them work… “So I wanted to take what I had learned and put it to the test, and so I threw my hat in. At that early point I had no idea that Tom Cruise was going to be involved, and that still amazes me… I worked with him on Mission: Impossible III, and we just have this shorthand and we enjoy working together, and so yes, it’s been a joy. How long are we talking for the production, from you signing on to us being here talking about it?
“It was probably about three years: one year, maybe, of working on the script, and then two years making the film.” As well as Tom Cruise your film also features Russell Crowe, and you couldn’t really have two bigger stars in any movie, so what was it like working with them both together? “Tom and Russell have been friends for over 20 years - I believe
they met in Australia, actually - and they wanted to work together for a long time, and so when we decided to put the Dr. Jekyll character in the film, we just looked at each other and
said, ‘Russell would be amazing for this!’
move is like an Olympic athlete, but I also saw in Kingsman that there was a whole performance going on just in her eyes.
“And it was nice: it was nice to see them work together and to watch their friendship bloom… And it was “She has her soul in her eyes… And daunting and exhilarating for me, as a I knew that no matter how lifelong fan, to work with them both, much but they treated makee s nic a w t i : e me so well and c i r up or e h t e “It was n g o t with such respect. would just radiate. That’s the thing that’s important about the ‘Universal Monsters’: you feel empathy for them even as you fear them.” And what about working with the CG? “Well, Tom and I were committed to making as much of this as practical as possible. Obviously there is a tremendous amount of CG in the film, but I wanted it to be more invisible than usual… So instead of saying, “Hey, let’s put them against a screen and paint a CG desert backdrop”, I said,
Let’s talk about the big secrets that are coming out about what looks like a whole new series of movie revamps of the ‘Universal Monsters’… “You’ll hear about it soon [and it’s since come out - to a point] that Universal are going to introduce a ‘Dark Universe’ and it will be dedicated to the ‘Universal Monsters’, and the idea is that we will have actors like Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem playing parts, and each monster will get a movie. “The next one we’re doing will be The Bride Of Frankenstein, and Bill Condon [who actually directed Gods And Monsters in 1998] will be directing it… It’s very exciting as it’s going to involve people who love these monsters and have deep histories with them, and the idea is to build a new Monster Universe. Will Javier Bardem be playing Frankenstein’s Monster? “I’m not going to tell you who he’ll be playing! [laughs] But I can tell you that Johnny Depp will be playing The Invisible Man… And the rest, well, you’ll have to wait and see!
The Mummy is now screening at cinemas absolutely everywhere.
Your Mummy is also going to be much discussed because she’s a woman… “When I decided to make my Mummy a woman I couldn’t think of who to cast… I’d seen Sofia Boutella in Kingsman and I’d seen her work as a dancer, and her control of her body is incredible. Her ability to

Live Review
MT MOUNTAIN Mt Mountain Live Review by Ian Messenger Mt Mountain are a Perth five-piece who recently touched down in Adelaide during their Australian ‘Dust’ tour. Mature and mesmerizing they had the packed crowd at The Grace Emily Hotel seemingly dumbfounded at just how good a band can be. Underground psychrock doesn’t get much better than this, here or abroad, and who knows where this young-ish band will end up especially after the immense success of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. A lot of bands play great music but sometimes you walk away from a gig and say, “that was art.” You could almost hang it on a gallery wall. Ladies would come 40
and go speaking of Mt Mountain. . . From classy visuals covering the band and the back wall of the Grace, to the drummer locked into a contagious trance, hollowed out wah pedals and the general held-back moodiness of the songwriting and measured instrumental delivery of the motionless guys up on stage you could say Mt Mountain are, for the want of a less hackneyed expression, transcending their genre. I don’t think anyone drove to the Grace that night in a spluttering Kombi, nor did I see a pair of flared brown corduroys in the house. A welcoming and open minded audience, one of the things about
Adelaide which is so envied by interstate bands, lapped up this so called psych rock band from the far west, but really is was just good music. Really really good. Psych or no-psych. They occupy their own space, and you are allowed to witness. Their arms and legs don’t move but their
hands gently noodle away in the big and also restrained sound – or should I say the ‘bigness’ comes out of their ‘restraint’. Reverse Stymon guitars and creepy ashram vibes add a confrontation of darkness and imposing disorder to the trip – in an existential breakdown there is no time for frivolities or banter – yet you look for something to appease the melting away of the familiar borders that hold us to the every day, be it your pint of beer, the girl standing next to you, or the mere cohesiveness of the artistic vision Mt Mountain smothers us floundering mortals of the suburban wastelands.

WHOOPEE! WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE By Robert Dunstan Denis Surmon and Stuart Day (AKA Messrs Doom & Gloom) have teamed up to present Whoopee! We’re All Gonna Die which will feature protest songs and ditties of death from the like of Dylan, Tom Waits, Barry McGuire, Tom Lehrer, Graham Nash, The Smiths, John Lennon and so many more with patrons actively encouraged to merrily sing along. This sing along-style show about death and imminent destruction will be celebrating the irony of death and destruction that, while being uncomfortable for many members of the human race, has provided fertile ground for songwriters over the years. The idea for the show was formed when Denis, who plays around Australia with Amber Joy & Her Holy Men and is a founding member of Adelaide power soul combo Double Wammy, and Stuart, of The Beggars and more, got talking one night. “I often work with Stuart on his various Neil Young shows [with the next one to take place as Young Neil Electric at The Railway Hotel 247 St Vincent St, Pt Adelaide, on Saturday 1 July] and also with Krusty Cowboy Club,” Denis says, “and one evening we were running some ideas past each other about putting something together. Denis goes on to say his own inspiration for getting the show up and running was when Donald Trump got elected as President of the USA. “I saw something on YouTube that said, with Trump elected, we’d just pushed the time on the Doomsday Clock forward to two minutes and 30 seconds before midnight, so we were two and a half minutes before Armageddon

LIOR LIOR & ASQ By Robert Dunstan Ahead of releasing a new album, Lior is collaborating with Australian String Quartet to present Love, Loss & Compassion as part of this year’s extensive Adelaide Cabaret Festival program. Born in Israel, Lior’s family moved to Sydney when he was 10 and, after finishing high school and attending university, he released his debut album, Autumn Glow, in 2005 which was nominated for three ARIA Awards and had him appearing at WOMADelaide that same year.

He has since forged an eclectic career that has included penning Hoot’s Lullaby for the ABC series Giggle & Hoot as well as a collaboration with imminent shadow artists Stephen Mushin and Anna Parry for the interactive touring show The Shadows & Light.
“And while I am going to try and put some of my new songs into the concert, the reality is that I don’t yet have string arrangements for them,” he laughs. “But I may throw one or two at the ASQ during rehearsals and see what they come up with.”
Lior, who played the role of Motel Kamzoil in Fiddler On The Roof at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in 2015, says the collaboration with the ASQ for Adelaide Cabaret Festival came about when he approached the organisers about being involved in the festival.
Lior has completed recording his new album and is currently in the mixing process.
“I had been talking to Adelaide Cabaret Festival about doing something – maybe with a string quartet – and they then came up with the idea of working with [Adelaide-based] Australian String Quartet,” he says. “And while I have not worked with them before I have, however, performed with their cellist, Sharon Grigoryan, in various guises over the years. “So it all sounded like a great idea and I’ve heard great things about Adelaide Cabaret Festival so am very much looking forward to it,” Lior adds. The evening’s program is set to include some of Lior’s past successes along with a small preview of material from a forthcoming 44
“I’ll be diving straight back into that as soon as I get home from Adelaide,” he says. “And I think it’s a fairly eclectic album because I recorded some of it in Melbourne and some over in New York with Justin Stanley [of Noiseworks and Electric Hippes].. “So it has a kind of duality to it,” Lior reasons. “It’s rather varied and that’s always the challenge when you start on a new body of work because you don’t want to be doing the same as last time.”
