f e f e FÉFÉ By Robert Dunstan Féfé is making a return to Adelaide to perform at So Frenchy So Chic In The Park as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s upcoming French Festival. Last here in 2014 to take part in the centre’s Sessions at Space Theatre and prior to that to perform at WOMADelaide in 2010, the French-born artist was also here recently on a promo visit. The promo involved radio interviews Féfé got to meet B1 and B2 and have his photograph taken with them – and a So Frenchy So Chic In The Park showcase in Adelaide’s Gresham St as a street party. “It was a funny day because it rained most of the afternoon but the sun came out just as the street party was about to happen,” he says in a strong French accent. “It went really well but we were scared it would keep raining and people wouldn’t come. But the rain stopped, the people came and it was really nice.
“And we did similar events in Sydney and Melbourne too,” he adds.
Féfé was born in France to Nigerian parents and became a founding member of the rap crew OFX before becoming involved with Saian Supa Crew as the’90s drew to a close
with that crew existing for a number of years.
At the beginning of 2017, Féfé released his third album, Mauve, via Wrasse Records, which includes a duet with Ayo on Naija – Remasterisé with Naija being the name given to Nigeria by its inhabitants.
‘And some of it follows the story of Nigerian people because traces of them can be found in places like Cuba, Brazil and Trinidad,” he remarks. “So I went to all those places, as well as Nigeria, to find ‘the sound’.” I remark that lots of artists have come from Nigeria, including King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen and the Kuti family. “Exactly,” Féfé happily agrees, “and I was first introduced to the music of King Sunny Ade at home. He was part of the music of youth. But my dad introduced me to a lot of great music because he listened to a lot of different styles. He would listen to American soul music, Stevie Wonder and all that. If it came out in the ’70s, I have probably heard it.”

“And from there I started writing poems but I was what they called an A-Plus student and music was more like a little hobby for me,” he continues. “So I was going to be a doctor, but by age 14 or 15 I had already starting writing my own raps and was loving it.

THIS WAY NORTH By Robert Dunstan Melbourne duo This Way North (Cat on drums and vocals and Leisha on guitars and vocals) came together several years ago after the two musicians had struck up a friendship while the respective bands they were in at the time were touring Canada. “Leisha and I first met in Canada about four years ago,” Cat says. “She was playing in a band called Jungle with her sister and I was touring with Benny Walker. And, when you are overseas, you can’t help but run into other Australians. You can often hear them in the crowd. So we started hanging out. “But it was funny as it wasn’t until we were just about to head home to Australia that Leisha and I worked out we live just around the corner from each other in Melbourne,” she laughs. “The following year we were at the same Canadian festival but, instead of going home, two of

SONiA By Robert Dunstan New York’s SONiA (disappear fear) is making her way back to Australia since first coming here in the late ’90s so we duly emailed off some questions and began by asking how she first got involved in music. “I wrote little musicals in grade school and then I got a guitar who became my best friend. I could tell her anything and she didn’t laugh or tell anyone my secrets. We became the best of friends and still are. But now her name is Santa 2.” What were your early musical influences and how have changed over time?
“I loved Joni Mitchell. But the biggest influence was Phil Ochs. He was a buddy of Bob Dylan only more of an intellectual geek – not as slick – and had serious emotional issues. I loved and love Stevie Wonder, Springsteen, The Gypsy Kings and Broadway musicals.
“My mom was big into opera and my dad jazz so a bunch of stuff was coming through our home stereo in Baltimore.” I had read that you are an admirer of Phil Ochs. How did you come to discover his music and what attracted you to it?
“His music spoke to me – he sounded sincere. And that he was not driven to do music to be a rock star because he was striving to change the world – that’s what music means to me – and that he could make a career of it even with that voice. I thought I could try and now, 30 years, later here I am 7,000 miles from Baltimore strumming and

“Living life inspires me. To quote myself, ‘Life can knock you down, love picks you up’, from my song Abraham. I could write a song any minute of the day but the Best ones seem to marinate and then surface more slowly.”

“I started at Woodford in 1998 and came over around seven times to play many festivals and clubs. In 2009 I performed at Sydney Opera House sharing the bill with Idan Reichel. But now it’s been almost 10 years since I’ve been there.” How has this upcoming Australian tour come about?

“We have been hoping to return to Australia and New Zealand for several years. But before my dad passed away I didn’t want to be so far away from him. And then my mom has had some strokes so I had to see to it that she has the proper care which I feel she has now.” Your latest album, a double, was recorded live in Germany. How did that come about? Had you performed at that club, Maximal, is the past? “Maximal is a club Near Frankfurt and is my Stone Pony. It launched me into a real career in Germany. I love my peeps there in Rodgau and it’s a small jazz club normally and it was a thank you to them and my
fascination to work with another company that had something else totally different going on.”
Although homeless, without money, having had to sell his guitar, Anderson was around the studios pouring tea and sitting in on sessions with Steve Windwood, Nico and Eno, Elton John and Jimmy Page, and being a familiar face to Blackwell he was sent to the studio to meet Bob Marley.
the original wailers The Original Wailers by Ian Messenger The Original Wailers are coming to wail down the house at Governor Hindmarsh Hotel with an extra show added due to huge demand. Featuring the original lead guitarist Al Anderson who recorded and toured with Bob Marley extensively, audiences will be in for a treat as the band goes through the whole Legend album plus more titbits of genius.
BSide Magazine got on the blower to Al Anderson in his Gold Coast hotel room and found him to be a relaxed, easy going guy. Soon we were chatting about how he got to meet Bob Marley and join The Wailers and thereby switched from working for Richard Branson and Virgin Records over to Chris Blackwell’s Island Records.
“I didn’t know anything about The Wailers,” recalls Anderson. “The Wailers were the underground monsters on their way up. And they were splitting up. I was at Paul Kossoff’s house, the lead guitarist for Free.
“Chris Blackwell [Island Records] called him and said, ‘I need you to come and do a session for Bob Marley. Got the Natty Dread sessions here and I want you to come and put some guitar on it.’ And he [Kossoff] had a great touch, a real smooth cat. “[Kossoff] said, ‘Ah my health isn’t really well right now and I’ve got a friend of mine here right now I think could substitute for me.’ And so it was me. And Blackwell said,
‘what’s the guy’s name?’ Kossoff said, ‘Al.’ Blackwell says, ‘oh he works here.’
“I went down and there’s Bob Marley,” Anderson remembers, “I had never met him before. Before I got to the studio Paul Kossoff introduced me to Catch A Fire and Burning. So that was my introduction to Bob Marley & The Wailers. I had never known of Catch A Fire and Burning which was their early music, and Simmer Down and all that stuff I hadn’t heard till way after.

I was going to Nigeria before I was going to Jamaica. And Chris – ‘nah you’re not going to Nigeria, you’re going to Jamaica and work with Bob Marley.’”

Jamaica was a third world country and I asked Anderson about his conditions when he moved over there to join The Wailers. I had heard that things were pretty rough.
“I had no money, I was hungry,” laments Anderson. “It was rotten man, but I remember, after I did the recordings of Natty Dread album I only remember the songs that I heard, and I went like, ‘man, don’t quit!’ because I was gonna bounce, yeah, I could not handle it.
“Bob didn’t have any money. He couldn’t give me a per diem, he couldn’t give me transportation to which I was promised from the Island Record Company. And he was supposed to put me in a hotel and I would be living better than they were, you know what I mean? So I just roughed it. I was a scrub just waiting for my turn. “And we ended up releasing the album a year and a half later after the worst conditions. The first night he drove around a whole bunch of hotels and I realised this guy doesn’t have any money, he’s not making me any deals from me because if he’s gonna put me up in a hotel for one night – I’m here for the whole year! “You can imagine, you know I meet you, you’re working with my company and I everyday gotta pay everyday a hotel bill for you, or every month, whatever – it wasn’t there.
“So I ended up sleeping on the sofa, sleeping on the floor, but before I got to Jamaica I flew from England to Delaware and lived with his mother and two half-brothers. I was there for four months. And then I got to know him, his family and his mom. She cooked great food,” laughs Anderson. “I slept on the sofa, for months. Just waited till we could get to Jamaica and start to practice for recording and touring.
“It took Chris so long to release Natty Dread I was suffering. Because he had Paul McCartney & Wings at the top of the charts, Human League and all those guys were massive, Clash were really hot. So he wanted to wait for that space where there was nothing happening and then just drop Natty Dread right in on it, pop!” and Anderson makes a loud popping sound. “And he did, and it just took a long time, and before all that happened it was tough for me. But I wouldn’t change anything, if I could turn back the clock any day man.”

WONDER WHEEL (M) *** Eighty something writer and director Woody Allen just keeps on working away, and this follow-up to the warmly nostalgic and more successful Café Society is a darker affair that feels cramped and TVlike, despite the presence of legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (and is the flat look to do with the fact that Amazon Studios helped produce - or is Woody trying for claustrophobia but only managing cheap?).
Anyway, this isn’t really a comedy, and yet as one of his more serious dramas, it doesn’t quite click either, and ultimately just seems like a bunch of mean and desperate people shouting at each other. At a Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s, we’re introduced to Carolina (London-born actress Juno Temple, looking great in the period dresses - and doesn’t Woody know it?), who’s returned to live with her estranged Dad Humpty (Jim Belushi) and has some shady characters looking for her.
The on-the-wagon Humpty, of course, lives in the park with his wife Ginny (Kate Winslet in the best and most devastating
role here) and her son Richie (Jack Gore) from a previous (and even worse) marriage, and they all proceed to reside in a small space and get on each other’s nerves.
Enter young lifeguard Mickey (Justin Timberlake, who narrates), a Woody Allen character if ever there was one, as he parrots on about existentialism and great authors while also starting an affair with Ginny, who falls in love with him when, quite obviously, she shouldn’t. This secret liaison is dangerous enough but gets even trickier when wanted woman Carolina gets involved, and this takes on an altogether dubious and dicey edge, as it’s more than possible that Woody is trying to make some not-so-veiled attempt to justify his own controversial private life. Again!!!
Jim and Justin are okay here (Jim is credibly scary yet pathetic and Justin almost impresses) but Juno is fine and Kate even better, and certainly their performances are enough to offset the big (and perhaps creepy) problems here. And don’t worry because even though this latest Woody outing isn’t a classic, he’s still got several hundred movies left in him and should keep on working well into his second (or third) centuries.

THE SECRET SCRIPTURE (M) **1/2 Dublin-born co-writer and director Jim Sheridan’s reputation rests on three movies he did with star Daniel Day-Lewis (My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer), but in recent years his pics have been more flawed or, in the case of 2011’s Dream House, serious disasters. This filming of Sebastian Barry’s novel has been in development for a while and probably got overcooked along the way, and the result is a chilly, uneasy and awfully Irish drama that features a rare irksome star turn from Rooney ‘I’ll Do Anything!!!’ Mara. In the early ‘80s we meet Roseanne McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave), a supposedly disturbed woman who’s lived in the Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital since 1942, when she was accused of murdering her baby, and in the years since she’s grown more fragile but no less convinced that she wasn’t the killer (and you can already see where this is going already). When new psychiatrist named Dr. William Greene (Eric Bana looking a bit out-of-place) takes on her case as the place is being shut
down (to build apartments surprise!!!), Rose starts to tell her story, and we cut back to the ‘30s when somehow the tall and still formidable Vanessa looked more like the short, waifish and American Rooney. Rooney’s Rose is evacuated and sent to live with her aunt in the Republic (her Dad is deceased and her mother was also insitutionalised) and runs into trouble with her supposed flirty habits when her friendliness with pilot Michael McNulty (Jack Reynor) stirs up the expected misogynist and anti-Brit sentiments. She also meets Father Gaunt (Theo James, a long way from the Divergent films), whose stereotyped hatred of sexuality is pretty over-the-top, as he glowers away at her and her ‘nymphomaniac’ ways, and when she starts a relationship with Michael, well, there’ll be all Catholic Hell to pay.
Perhaps this sounds like it should work but, somehow, it simply doesn’t, and the performances are all fairly disappointing, with RM almost caricaturing herself and Theo such a villain he might as well be twirling his mustache. And, well, Jesus!!! MDB

“Old Skool Andy has been a mate from way back,” The Rev says of the now quite legendary selector. “So we just call him and, unless he’s off working interstate, he always agrees and says yes.
“And Katie is the daughter of a mate of mine, Dean, and she’s amazing,” he continues. “She’s quite young but we did a gig out at Para Hills and Dean suggested her as a support. And we thought, ‘Ah, yeah, okay’, without being all that into the idea.
FISTFUL OF TROJANS By Robert Dunstan Adelaide-based ska exponents Fistful Of Trojans are set to launch their debut offering, In The Rough, and, after looking around for a suitable venue, have elected to present it at Club5082, a live music initiative of City Of Prospect. “We didn’t really know where to do our launch but Chris [Hayne] from the band had been involved in something else at Club5082 and had a contact number,” Fistful Of Tojans’ singer and occasional ukulele player The Reverend Raphael says. “So we called them and they got straight back and it was booked in before we knew it because they were really keen on the idea. “And our drummer, Peter [Allan], played there with Shades Of Blue when they did some blues nights [as part of Guitars In Bars] at Club5082 and said it was a pretty tidy place and very well run,” he continues. “And while it’s the official launch for In The Rough, we’ve already been handing it out to people at other gigs,” The Rev notes with a chuckle. “As soon as we got hold of them, we didn’t say no to anyone buying one.”
Fistful Of Trojans formed some years ago – The Rev originally led Adelaide ska band The Seen – and have often been the combo of choice whenever overseas ska legends such as The Selecter, The English Beat and Bad Manners have skanked their way into town.
“That comes from back in the old days when I used to run an international search engine called Skahoo,” The Rev reveals with a laugh. “That basically indexed all the ska bands all over the world and a lot of ska acts got to
know me through that. So whenever I knew they were coming to town, I’d put my hand up to do the support because I was pretty much in the loop.
“But she got up on the stage and just started belting out some amazingly stylised versions of some cover songs as well as some amazing originals,” The Rev continues. “It’s like she’s a million years old in the body of a youngster. So we got Katie up to sing a couple of songs with us that night.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was making the decision to move from Melbourne. Why the hell would you do that? This is what most people ask me when I tell them my story. Well, I think that last Saturday night’s gig goes a long way to explaining why I moved and why I have stayed so far…
When Pete Howlett asked my band The Sunday Reeds to play at EgoFest to support Hitmen DTK (Sydney) and The Exploding White Mice, I answered with a resounding YES. The proposed line-up was impressive. In preparation for the show, I try to educate myself about Adelaide’s rock ‘n’ roll history so I explore Greasy Pop Records’ releases as well as familiarising myself with the music of Exploding White Mice (who were on that label).
I also start having mild panic attacks two weeks’ prior to the gig having possibly taken on too many commitments. This is generally what I do to survive life. Keep busy, keep going. I’m not sure how many performers or artists suffer from anxiety, but I assume it is a lot. I can tell you that when I perform it’s an emotional ordeal every, single, fucking time. Sometimes it is manageable, sometimes it isn’t. Even when it isn’t and I’m a seething mess inside, I somehow manage to perform and look like I have it all together. Having a drink often helps.
Even though I always have anxiety I often get a massive high from performing. As writer T S Eliot astutely observed: Anxiety is the handmaiden to creativity. It’s a cruel fact that anxiety often goes hand in hand with a good performance. It’s the adrenaline rush that’s required to generate energy for a show. I always survive but at an intense cost to my own well-being. The night before the show, I have a very late rehearsal with the boys as my guitarist’s flight is delayed. It’s a great run-through. It makes me feel more confident but I can’t ever shake the nerves and find it near impossible to sleep.
On the night of the gig, we turn up early for a quick sound check and I already feel sick to my stomach. Of course, everything is fine. But that’s not how I’m feeling. Then it’s time to play. I had been waiting for some fries to turn up at our table, but alas, they don’t make it so I take my order number up to the stage. Then I flex my fingers and try to shake off the feeling of impending doom
So far, so good. The crowd is starting to build which comforts me to some degree. I always think it is odd that I feel more comfortable and less nervous with a larger audience. I feel less alone that way. I don’t want to talk much between songs, I prefer to hit it hard and get it done.
People are here to check out this ‘new’ band. I just want to show them what we can do. We go through our set to our more recent singles Pretty People, Blue Stockings and Drowning in my Love. The sound of applause. I think we’ve done alright. Michael, the sound engineer, is a gem and the mix is perfect. Apparently, we played a great set. Phew. Now I can relax, sort of. The waitress finally brings out the fries I was waiting for and I quickly escape to the beer garden. Some passing punters tell me how good we were. I just need to breathe. I also need whisky. Next up are the Meatbeaters. I’ve seen Meatbeaters play a couple of times at the Cumberland Hotel and they never fail to get people excited and closer to the stage. They play a mean rock ‘n’ roll set in a similar vein to Motórhead. Now the EgoFest party is in full-swing.
I’ve heard stories about Pete Howlett’s punk rock band the Bloodsucking Freaks. I’m about to find out why. Pete is a fiery ball of pent-up frustration and energy. He never remains still for very long. Bloodsucking Freaks are immensely entertaining. Humorous banter makes it even more enjoyable with the band having a dig at the audience and at each other. They play such
songs as Bottlesick, Scumfuckin’ Asshole and Kunt. They finish up with a cover of G G Allin’s Bite It You Scum with members of Pete’s other band ProTools joining in the fun. It’s quite the spectacle to behold.
It’s approximately midnight or so when Exploding White Mice take to the stage. The drummer, David Bunney dismantles the kit and puts it back together again. It’s gonna be a long night….
When they do finally start, a small but vigorous mosh pit begins. One punter loses his spectacles on the ground. He eventually finds them and amazingly they haven’t been stomped on. Some guy wearing a cap and a bad cardigan is gleefully ramming into everybody and I gleefully push him back. The further away from me, the better. I’m starting to feel socially exhausted and I’m on my fifth or sixth whisky. The Mice play Fear, I Just Want My Fun and their version of The Shadows of Knight’s Bad Little Woman amongst others. The lead singer, Paul Gilchrist reminds me slightly of Jon Voight for some reason. For most of the crowd, who were obviously fans back in the day, it is a huge nostalgia trip and a thoroughly enjoyable one at that.
It’s now 1am on Sunday morning. Hitmen DTK take to the stage with more energy than I currently care to muster. Singer Johnny Kannis looms over the crowd as he climbs up on tables near the stage. They play all their hits and a few covers. I Don’t Mind and Everybody Knows are crowd favourites, as are versions of The Sex Pistols’ Pretty
Vacant and The Flamin’ Groovies’ Shake Some Action. It’s around 3am before I get my gear and merchandise and hit the road. But not before my guitarist loses his beloved guitar. Turns out another guitarist accidentally took his. It gets sorted out eventually and now I’ve hit the metaphorical wall. My nerves are shot and I need to recharge, but I had a good time. As I seem to be somewhat of a masochist I look forward to doing it all over again…and again.

Hana & Jessie-Lee’s Bad Habits by Ian Messenger Hana and Jessie-Lee’s Bad Habits have just released their Southlands album on nice 180 gram vinyl and are continuing their large alt-country presence here in Adelaide and far beyond SA’s rabbit-holed borders. From upcoming festivals in Tamworth and Womadelaide this female duo of telecaster guitar twangs and narcotic vocal drawls have got something other musicians may pine for – the smell of success. Their annual Christmas show is up for reactivation at the Grace Emily Hotel with a tonne of guests musical and otherwise. Yet heady celebrations aside there’s nothing like the swamp of spiritual sobriety when songs like “Road To Ruin” jolt you to that special place where the reveller comes face to face with their own stark misery. It’s a musical highlight of the album.

“When I worked on the mine site all the guys I worked with were country boys and they were always asking me to play or learn Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings songs and that sort of thing. “So I played a lot of country music up there and I also listened to a lot. When the mine site closed I went back to Adelaide and started The Sloe Ruin with Jess [Zubkevych].
“Yeah so working up there inspired me to keep playing country music. It’s kinda appropriate music when you’re living out in the middle of nowhere.”
“Road To Ruin” was written when Hana Brenecki was working in the Northern Territory on a mine site where conditions The title track were understandably bleak. When not on “Southlands” refers the job there was plenty of time to pen some to our southern
