The band’s name drew the attention of Adelaide’s Fritz magazine who ventured along to review a live show for a feature online story.
“Yeah, that was funny,” Pat laughs. “So I’m going to send them a copy of the EP. And I’ve already dropped one into Three D Radio and heard one of the songs played on air.”
Joining Fritz Dolly for their launch will be Velvet Moth, a local psych rock crew made up of members of The Streamliners (brothers Dennis and Nick Kiprides) and GT Stringer’s internationally regarded luthier Jim Redgate.
“We’ve done a few shows with those guys,” Pat points out. “And because it’s a bit hard for any of us old buggers to get gigs these days, Pat says they then added another guitarist FRITZ DOLLY we have to stick together. Junkie Kut’s earliest musical influences came via cassette tape.
JUNKIE KUT By Robert Dunstan The UK’s Junkie Kut describes his music as, ‘An accelerated, postapocalyptic version of The Prodigy, but way more extreme and inspired by resistance movements and radical subcultures worldwide’. He’s been living in this country for a while and is about to head out on tour before spending much of 2018 touring Europe armed with a new EP, Enter The Dreamtime.
BSide Magazine whizzed off a few questions and began by asking Junkie Kut where he grew up. “I grew up in Northwest England in a small city called Chester close to Liverpool. It was a pretty deprived culture, creatively and economically. Much like most northern towns, the aspirations were pretty limited unless you were middle class.” Junkie Kut first get involved in music at about the age of 15.
“I started writing music on guitars with a good friend. That’s basically all we did. This led onto a few punk, rock and ska bands which became a fulltime obsession. An identity. The rules were different in the world of musick. You made it up as you went along and you made stuff collectively with your best mates. No rules. No limitations. Just you, your imagination, marijuana and alcohol.” How do you describe what it is you do to those not familiar with your work?
“Generically, the genre I make is speedcore, hardcore, breakcore and noise punk but

when I did the show in Adelaide last time, people associated me as being just a showgirl in cabaret venue in Paris.
“But The Lido, which is on The Avenue des Champs-Élysées, is very famous but not so obvious to everybody,” she continues. “So I’ve written a new song to help explain that and also changed a few songs around at little as well.
“So there’s now some Sondheim in the show,” Caroline reveals, “because he had to be in there as Stephen Sondheim is just so amazing.”
CAROLINE NIN By Robert Dustan Paris-based chanteuse Caroline Nin is no stranger to Adelaide as she had made her way here several times in the past to perform at Adelaide Cabaret Festival. She is now delighted to have been invited to make a return to present Songs & Stories From The Paris Lido as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s compact, three-day French Festival. Performed in French and English, Songs & Stories From The Paris Lido is a production that enjoyed its Adelaide premiere as part of Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2014, but Caroline is quick to point out that the show has evolved since then. “I have written an original song to better express the idea that The Lido is like the sister of The Moulin Rouge,” she says. “And I also found,

There were no issues and no segregation. “And people loved their music here in Paris and I often worked with American musicians in the ’80s,” she adds. “But there are no so many these days after they’d flocked there in the ‘60s.
There is a sadness in Caroline’s voice when I asked about the effect recent terrorist attack have had on her hometown. “It’s gone back to normal, considering everything, but now we have armed soldiers and the police on every street corner,” she sighs. “And for a while Paris was very quiet but it’s picked up again. So we do feel protected with all the security and the tourists are coming back, but things will never be the same again.” Caroline says she is has been touring extensively over the last couple of years and has greatly enjoyed performing on a luxury cruise ship.
“That was very nice,” she says. “I “It’s a fun and entertaining show but can be challenging for “It’s a fun and would board the ship in the early evening where some because, yes, I do go entertaining it had docked, have there and there is always show but can be dinner with the captain – some kind of audience challenging for as you do – then perform participation,” she says. some because, my show, stay on board “And I am going to use my overnight, disembark yes, I do go favourite word now and there and there the following morning say there will be lots of ‘shenanigans’.” is always some and then catch the train home. All I can say is that the story is based on a painting by an American painter. “That’s all I will say at this stage,” Caroline adds with a laugh. “But the show, which is a lot of work, especially the writing, will be performed with a large band and a string quartet. I will say that.”
Caroline is quick to say what she likes about Adelaide. “I think it’s the general ambience of the city,” she says. “I have greatly enjoyed it every time I have been there and I think it’s been four times now. And each time I make more friends.”
Caroline, who studied at Lille University, began her singing career in Paris jazz venue The Holloywood Savoy where she would deliver her interpretations of songs made famous by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. “It wasn’t until I was 24 though which is late for a singer,” she says. “I had never sung before that. But I worked with a lot of American musicians and totally embraced the American Songbook. And, looking back, that was very special. “And while my English was okay, I had a very think French accent which some people liked and others didn’t,” Caroline laughs. “So I moved to London and planned to stay there for a year but it ended up being 12. All these gigs kept coming up.” Legend has it that Soft Cell’s Marc Almond came across Caroline and invited her to perform at his Soho club.
“And that eventually led to going to Edinburgh Fringe Festival where I was spotted by some Australian festival scouts who were doing some ‘shopping’ for artists,” she reveals. “So I was invited to Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2002 to do my Edith Piaf show.
“It’s that thing of just doing what you do and then having people happen across you which then leads to other things,” Caroline notes. “For example, that gig on the luxury cruise ship came about from meeting someone in a village in Austria.”
Caroline Nin will present Songs & Stories From The Paris Lido as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s French Festival at Dunstan Playhouse from 5pm on Saturday 13 January and from 7.30pm on Sunday 14 January with tickets via BASS.

“And look, we love playing those old cowboy songs but also love dressing up in all the western gear,” he admits with a laugh. “It also adds to the theatrics of it. At the end of the day, we don’t do it for the money. We do it because we love playing those old cowboy songs and we do it for a laugh.”

Sleepy Dawg says that while tickets sales have been sleepy, he’s the last to criticise those who don’t take advantage of cheaper pre-sales.
THE CRUSTY COWBOYS By Robert Dunstan The Crusty Cowboys (AKA Krusty Cowboy Klub and photographed above by Ian Fisk) will soon be saddlin’ up to present their musical comedy caper that has a focus on cowboy songs which may or may not include some parodies along with traces of nuts. The troupe, Sleepy Dawg Dawson (Denis Surmon) on guitar and vocals, Red Rash (Ian Polites) on keyboards and vocals, Stereo Jack (Brett Sody) on bass and vocals, Busta Saddlesore (Craig Rodda) on drums and Rusty Sheriff’s Badge (Stuart Day) on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and vocals, began life a couple of years ago. “Yeah, we had a regular night at a pub in town at which we invited people to get up and play with us,” Sleepy Dawg announces. “But it didn’t really take off because, as good as the saloon was, it was probably on the wrong edge of town. The idea to do a variety show with guests was fine, but the pub was in the backwaters of the dark end of town. “But it was always such a lot of fun we’ve been continually looking for ways to put it on again. But it’s a lot of work because it’s not like a normal gig as there’s a fair bit of work in staging it.
“But we did a show last Adelaide Fringe under the name The Call Of The West that went pretty well so we thought we’d give it another go at a better known venue.”
The Crusty Cowboys, who all dress up in their finery whenever they are presenting a show, take old cowboy songs or the theme tunes to popular television westerns and
“Unless it’s someone I really, really, really want to see, I won’t buy a ticket when I know I can just roll up and pay at the door to get in,” he says. “But we either perform them straight or turn really do want to continue with the them into a clever parody. concept so we’re hopeful of getting a bit of a following. We are also looking “We’d like to turn them all into parodies, at putting together some kind of but Rusty Sheriff’s Badge and I have promotional video so that it’s a lot of respect for those “At the end of easier to explain to venues what old cowboy songs,” Sleepy the day, we it is we do.” Dawg says. “If a song fits into the context of the show, don’t do it for The musician concludes by the money. And some, do it because sets at the Governor Hindmarsh such as Rolling Along With and are easing into the change of we love The Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds, name from Krusty Cowboy Klub playing those to The Crusty Cowboys. And then there tears to your eyes,” he then announces. were people who thought it was a club “So they tend to sing their songs straight you had to join.” because if you let me have a go at anything, normally I will bugger it up. I am much better doing the parodies. The Crusty Cowboys will once “So all the good songs – the ones that need to be treated with a great deal of respect – I stay well away from,” Sleepy Dawg adds with a laugh.
The troupe have found that the theme songs to old television westerns such as Rawhide and Bonanza, have proved to be popular.
“We do Rawhide as a parody though,” Sleepy Dawg is quick to point out. “But we did drop Bonanza because while I really love that guitar bit, I used to play it very badly. But we do throw in the theme song to Petticoat Junction because it’s such a fun one to do. “And we do Charlie Daniels Band’s The Devil Went Down To Georgia as The Devil Went Down To Australia and have fun with that. I’ve Got Spurs That Jingle Jangle Jingle is another fun one to do.
again be gettin’ back in the saddle again in the new year and ridin’ into the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, for a lowdown hoedown on Friday 5 January with tickets via the venue.

“It’s also different enough for people who already have a lot of my stuff,” Don laughs. “Even if they have a CD with the same song on it, the one on the new CD is likely to be a quite different version.” Until recently, it had been over 25 years since Don ventured interstate to present his solo wares.
“And it’s been funny – and I don’t quite know how to say this with any modestly – but it seems I get a bit more respect in Melbourne for some reason,” he says. “If I do a gig here, people will say, ‘Oh, Don’s doing another bloody gig’, but whenever I head over to Melbourne people seem to get a bit excited about it.
DON MORRISON By Robert Dunstan Adelaide’s Don Morrison has just assembled a new themed CD, It’s A Long Drive, which features some new songs and some remixes of older material along with some rerecordings of earlier songs and, following a launch at one of his favourite haunts, will now be undertaking a second at another of his preferred local venues. “Every time I make a new album I always think I’ll do something special like hire out a hall or something,” Don muses. “But it never happens. So we had two gigs already booked – at Semaphore Workers Club and then at the Wheatsheaf – so we’ve turned those into launches.
“So it’s worth a trip over there just for the morale boost,” Don laughs. “And Melbourne is a fantastic place although I couldn’t live there. But going over every so often for a week is fine.”
Don’s new themed offering, subtitled Songs Of Streets, Roads & Cars, boasts 11 songs and includes Stuck In Neutral, Hay Plain Blues, Five Men In A Car, Grand Some years ago, Don published a book, This Junction Road, Kensington Road and more, Could Be Big, which was very well-received draws from his arsenal of solo albums as as an entertaining romp through well as those recorded with his various bands, including “I don’t really his extensive career but says he Open Road by The Lonely want to get any only has a few copies left. That thinking of making it into an Norwood. might be the eBook. That might be the next step. And I may update it a bit if I “I’ve done most of my stuff next step.” do that although it would just be with Brett and I highly more of the same. recommend it as he’s just so easy to work with,” he says. “And if you are working with a professional such as Brett, who gets “But I don’t want to let it just fade away,” Don decides. things done quickly, it’s more economical. “A couple of songs are new, a couple are untouched, some are re-recordings and others have been remixed,” Don then continues. “It’s a compilation but I put a lot of work into making it cohesive. So there was a lot of care and time that went into that so that it didn’t sound like it had just been quickly thrown together.
“We always do okay at the Workers Club,” he says of the Semaphore venue that was recently inducted into Adelaide Music Collective’s SA Venue Hall Of Fame, “and I like the place anyway. Their range of music can be pretty narrow – we’d be the least blues-based band they have “But once I had the there – but everyone loves the place and I’ve idea for songs about roads and streets heard interstate musicians suggest it’s one of and all that, it did come together pretty the best places they’ve ever played. quickly,” he continues. “And I’m getting out of Adelaide a bit more now and over to Melbourne and it’s always good to have “Same as the Wheatsheaf [also a member a compilation album. If someone wants of AMC’s SA Venue Hall Of Fame] although to buy a CD at a gig and asks what one to that it more of a listening audience,” Don buy – I usually have five or six available at suggests. “It’s friendly and very well run and gigs – it’s easy enough to say, “Ah, this new has a very good vibe as well.” compilation is pretty good’.
Don’s launch at the Wheatsheaf Hotel will be as Don Morrison’s Raging Thirst which is the singer and guitarist alongside his sons Eddie (bass) and Jake (guitar and keyboards) and drummer Andy Przygonski.

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE (PG) *** No one can agree about whether this longtime-coming follow-up to 1995’s Jumanji is a sequel, a reboot or a remake (the same confusion dogged the similar Zathura), but it seems to be a bit of all three and, rather surprisingly, works better than the somewhat clunky (and already datedlooking) original. There’s also plenty of guiltypleasure humour to be had from the central star quartet and as many rude giggles allowed with a kid-friendly PG Rating (obviously producer/ director Jake Kasdan, of crude ‘mature’ pics like Bad Teacher and Sex Tape, just couldn’t help himself). Four high schoolers have the expected teen problems: Alex
(Alex Wolff) is a hapless nerd; Anthony a.k.a. ‘Fridge’ (Ser’Darius Blain) fears losing his scholarship; Martha (Morgan Turner) is grimly studious; and narcissist princess-type Bethany (Madison Iseman) can’t live without her damn phone.
When they all get detention and are forced to work in the school’s basement, they find the old Jumanji video game, joke about the primitive technology and are sucked into its fantasy world. It’s been given away elsewhere, so there’s no crime in revealing that wimpy Alex becomes a hunky he-man (Dwayne Johnson), Fridge a shrieking sidekick (Kevin Hart, still more famous in America than anywhere else), Martha

a coolly sexy Lara-Croft-type (Karen Gillan) and Bethany an “overweight middleaged man!!!” played by the always-vanity-free Jack Black.
The four must work together and get used to the rules of the game (and a limited number of lives) to battle an evil nature-possessed baddie named Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale, actually pretty scary for this sort of thing). Although it looks and feels pretty juvenile, there’s quite a lot going on in this one’s multi-penned screenplay, especially when Fridge/Hart rebels against the idea of
being subservient, Martha/ Gillan feels embarrassed about so much of her flesh being exposed (her costume proved controversial in this one’s early photos, but it’s meant to be a commentary upon on objectification, um, okay?) and Bethany/Black must deal with the whole having-a-penis thing. You could hate yourself in the morning for enjoying such good silly fun, and yet this is nevertheless worth a look for terminal Jumanji groupies and anyone who’s already seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi 50 times.

cosmic psychos live review
But it was a joke and Matt Weston, himself an audience favourite, leaves the stage when the big man McKeering aka Mad Macca rolls in with the sheepish grin of a school kid and the stomach of a man who loves beer and schnitzels and perhaps a side of beetroot. McKeering was in modestly mode and wearing a shirt, unlike in their latest music video. How does it happen that hundreds of young men and women are so desperate that a middle-aged man take off his shirt and bounce his stomach around. It’s a rare thing.
Cosmic Psychos Live Review by Ian Messenger Photos by Iain Dalrymple Cosmic Psychos came to Fowlers Live recently and gave the punters everything they wanted and then some. The Psychos served up chaos, over-the-line danger and lack of OH&S to their unique firebrand of catchy, masculine and pounding songs. Without even trying, beers in hand and cigarettes dangling, these fat old darlings of the grunge revolution put on a party try-hard dads of the Australian ‘burbs could never achieve. Forget plastic glitter hats and streamers – this
is the Dionysian festival where kids of the internet come rushing face-to-face with primal life in all its terror and comedy.
Film maker, manager and champion of the Cosmic Psychos Matt Weston [pictured pulling his shirt up] started off the set on guitar much to everyone’s disappointment – where’s the fat dude? Ross Knight tells the audience that their guitarist John McKeering is ill and Weston had to learn the entire backlog of Psychos’ material overnight. I was dumb enough to believe him, I hope others were as gullible.
The Cosmic Psychos did all the crowd favourites including the single they are touring “Better In The Shed”. Fowlers Live was packed and if you wanted to see the band you had to squeeze your way into the band area. With hundreds of punters screaming out the lyrics to
every song, and music that is as raw and intoxicating as this, you wonder how other bands get it so wrong.
Due to overwhelming punter demand Mad Macca took his shirt off for the last song. Needless to say people went ape-shit.
BSide Magazine interviewed Ross Knight leading up to this show and can be read here.
