tour and stepped into the rehearsal rooms with The Living End.”
The Living End released Shift in 2016 and launched it in Adelaide with two huge shows at the Governor Hindmarsh, but Andy says they are already in discussions about their next album.
“We had a fairly hectic run over in America – we just got back a few days ago – and prior to that we did a couple of European tours,” he reveals. “And while we were over in America, where we did a bunch of shows with Midnight Oil, we were talking a lot about the next album.
the living end THE LIVING END By Robert Dunstan Last year was a big one for Australian rock trio The Living End as they toured Europe and the US under their own steam, did some shows in America as special guests of Midnight Oil and then came home to do another show with that band. This year also promises to be another huge one for the band as they will kick it off by headlining a series of A Day On The Green concerts alongside American band Veruca Salt with Spiderbait, Tumbleweed and The Fauves being on the huge rock bill. BSide Magazine chatted over the telephone late last year to drummer Andy Strachan while he was taking a break from a rehearsal.
“Yeah, we’re doing a gig for the NRL guys,” he says. “Funny thing is, I don’t know much about NRL and it’s a Triple M kind of thing. But we did a morning show for the AFL the other day.”
As Andy hails from South Australia – he was born and raised in Christies Beach and has now moved back after 25 years in Melbourne – we briefly discussed how NRL never took off in this state despite some major attempts before moving onto more relevant topics such as A Day On The Green. “It’s an epic line-up and it’s going to be so much fun,” he suggests. “I’m really looking forward to it because it’s like a Big Day Out line-up. And, as that doesn’t exist anymore, it seems like the A Day On The Green guys have grabbed the concept.
“So we’ll be getting together to do some writing soon and then look at what we’ve got for a new album,” Andy continues. “We actually feel pretty inspired at the moment because we’ve had such a good year. I dunno, “It’s also punter-friendly,” Andy enthuses. but the harder we work overseas, the more it inspires us to continue. It feels really creative “It’s pretty relaxed and casual and we and I think that has something to do with haven’t done A Day On The Green in playing night after night in America.” Adelaide before although we’ve done a couple of interstate ones. And McLaren Andy says that while touring Vale is just such a beautiful spot “Maybe we overseas is good, the costs are with, arguably, the best wine in can get a considerable. the world.” “And I haven’t seen The Fauves for years,” he laughs. “Their Dogs Are The Best People is still one of my favourite songs. And seeing Tumbleweed again is going to be great. That will be epic. And fun. And we used to do heaps of shows with Spiderbait back in the old days but haven’t seen those guys for years. And I always though the two bands worked well together.”
polling booth set up at the winery. People could have a couple of wines before they vote.”
Andy laughs when I mention A Day On The Green will be taking place on election day in Adelaide and that those on the electoral roll will be required to vote before heading to McLaren Vale.
“Maybe we can get a polling booth set up at the winery,” he then jokes. “People could have a couple of wines before they vote.”
Prior to joining The Living End in 2000, Andy was a member of various Adelaide bands before moving to Melbourne where he played with P76, Alcotomic and Pollyanna. “I was with Violetine for a little while too,” he laughs. “But I was playing with Polyanna, who were about to wind up anyway, when I auditioned to join The Living End. I’d been recommended to them and then, when they asked me to join, I said, ‘You’ll have to wait a couple of weeks while I finish this tour with Polyanna’. So I literally stepped off a plane from Tasmania at the end of that
“We don’t make a million bucks out of it that’s for sure,” he laughs. “By the time you’ve taken in all the touring costs including airfares and stuff it doesn’t leave much. It all adds up but we put together some good shows and have a pretty loyal and quite fanatical following over there which helps.
“And we generally play rooms that are comparable to the Gov in Adelaide,” Andy says. “There’s a place called Slim’s in San Francisco where we usually finish up a tour that’s very much like the Gov. It’s a well-run, dedicated, live music venue. And gigs at any of the House Of Blues venues are great to play as well.”
The Living End, Spiderbait, Veruca Salt, Tumbleweed and The Fauves will be playing Leconfield Wines, McLaren Vale, on Saturday 17 March with tickets via Ticketmaster http:// www.ticketmaster.com.au/ promo/ku2sfd

album, I wasn’t familiar with the musical at all.
“But I spoke to Craig [Illot], the director, and all the other creatives behind this production and was impressed by what they were doing which really helped,” Phil says. “But, when I first stepped on the rehearsal stage, it hit me how hard it was as there is so much to think about. I had to constantly keep making sure I was in the right place on stage and had all my props with me. “But after doing that season in Brisbane, I felt quite comfortable in the role,” he says. “Once you’ve done it a few times, it doesn’t seem so complicated to remember all the things you have to think about. So, by the end of the season, I was quite confident.”
AMERICAN IDIOT By Robert Dunstan American Idiot is a high-energy rock musical based on American punk band Green Day’s 2004 concept album of the same name. The show, first staged in 2010, has enjoyed great success around the world and is now heading to Adelaide. BSide Magazine speaks to Phil Jamieson, of the band Grinspoon, about the show in which he plays the lead role of St. Jimmy – and one which can be played by a male or female – and begins by asking of his involvement.
“I received an email from my manager in January of 2017 saying, ‘Here’s an odd one. Bit weird but would you be interested?’ and I immediately responded with a ‘Yes’.” Phil laughs. “And I’d said that without really thinking about it. It was only when I went up to Brisbane in early March for rehearsals that I realised what I’d got myself into. “It was something I’d never done before and I didn’t realise what was involved [in a stage production],” he continues. “I’d initially thought to myself, ‘Ah, I should be okay at this’, but I found it quite a challenge and very nerve wracking. It wasn’t something I was used to doing and while I knew Green Day’s
For the Brisbane season at QPAC, Phil shared the role of St. Jimmy with Chris Cheney of The Living End and in Adelaide will be alternating with Adalita (of Magic Dirt)..
“It’s quite a complicated show that tells a simple story,” he laughs. “There’s a lot happening on stage. It’s a 90-minute show with no breaks so everyone has to hold onto their seats. It’s a pretty big ride.” Phil says he is a big fan of Green Day from when he first heard them in the early ’90s.
“They were kind of like the antidote to the misery of grunge at the time,” he offers. “They had fun songs – songs about masturbation and stuff – but they were actually very well-written songs. And, after Dookie, I remember hearing Boulevard Of Broken Dreams [from American Idiot] and thinking, ‘Wow, this is a huge leap’. ‘With American Idiot, creatively and musically, the band had taken a great leap forward,” Phil says. “Getting to do those songs in the show is a real pleasure.”
The musical has a point of difference in that it’s based on a punk rock story.
“There are still some aspects of the show that touch on traditional theatre, though,” Phil responds. “There’s the element of it being a rock concert, sure, but people feel a different kind of euphoria when they walk out of the theatre.
“It came about that I will have to be elsewhere for a few dates of the Adelaide season and “But it has its theatrical parts so I was asked who could take my place,” would suggest it’s a gateway “There’s the Phil says. “I immediately suggested musical that attracts those element of it being Adalita because, as a youngster who might go to the Crown a rock concert, growing up in rural New South Wales, & Anchor to see a loud punk sure, but people I really looked up to Magic Dirt. She rock band but it also has feel a different will be perfect as Jimmy although, enough traditional theatre kind of euphoria unfortunately, I won’t get to see her in it, I believe, to appeal when they walk due to my other commitments. to people who are regular out of the theatre.” theatre goers. “I’m sure Adalita will bring her own passion and venom to the role of Jimmy because I like to think of him as a loveable rouge,” he laughs. “She’ll be different to me but it will still work. It’ll just be a different interpretation.”
American Idiot was first staged in 2010 on Broadway with Green Day’s Billie Jo Armstrong in the role of St. Jimmy and won several awards. There has since been countless productions of the show which attest to its success. “I think ours is something like the 40th production,” Phil suggests. “So, yeah, there have been lots. I think there’s been a Mexican American Idiot, a Chinese American Idiot and a Canadian one. But it’s an interesting show because it’s quite rich in detail and very moving. That’s hard to find these days.
“It’s also a love story,” he concludes with a laugh.
American Idiot runs at Grote St’s Her Majesty’s Theatre from 8pm on Friday 19 January until Sunday 28 January with booking via BASS. http://www.bass.net.au/ events/green-days-americanidiot/

“By then, Greg and I had really refined the show because we’d changed the script around – we’d taken some bits out and put some new things in – and it really took off from there.”
michaela burger
The show, which features narrative and song, includes such Piaf classics as the aforementioned La Vie En Rose as well as a number of the singer’s other hits such as Non, Je ne regrette rien.
MICHAELA BURGER By Robert Dunstan Michaela Burger, vocals, and Greg Wain, guitar, are all set to again present Exposing Edith, a theatrical show about Edith Piaf that won Best Cabaret Adelaide Fringe ’16 and was nominated for a Helpmann Award as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s French Festival. Since its premiere, the show has toured nationally and also been presented at Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it scored some great notices.
“That was last year,” Michaela says, “and we did 26 shows that went really well. It was fantastic and the great thing for us was performing it in the same venue night after night. When that happens you are not constantly worrying about stuff because it’s all set up. When you tour a show and play different venues, a lot of time is taken up thinking about the technical side of things. Not having to do that every day takes a real load off.
“Piaf had some really big hits – everyone knows those – but we also thought, as well as putting in those, we also wanted to honour the chronological movement of Piaf’s life,” Michaela points out. “We didn’t just want to sing her songs but wanted to put it into a story. So we went back and researched because it’s become part of our lives,” Michaela enthuses. “It’s always good to do about the songs she was singing on the street it in Adelaide, too, because that’s where it when she was first discovered. We’ve put in Mon Legionnaire, although a few people all started.” are familiar with that one, and the last song “I go in and out of Piaf ever recorded. So there are songs How did Exposing Edith character because people know and some they won’t. come about? we wanted to “And I go in and out of character – I tell audiences “I guess it all started when play her sisters and her lovers before something about I was 17 – and I tell this playing myself – because we wanted to Piaf’s personal story in the show – and tell audiences something about Piaf’s life. We wanted to I went to France on an explain that rather personal life,” she adds. “We wanted to exchange program and than just focus on explain that rather than just focus on my host mother gave me her fame.” her fame.” an Edith Piaf box set of her greatest recordings,” Michaela says. “I’d also been introduced to Piaf by a fabulous French teacher I had at school but I don’t think it was until I got to France and started really listening to her music that I became affected by it. I can remember crying along to her songs even though, back then, I didn’t really know what she was singing about as I was only still just learning to speak French.
“When I was 19 and back in Adelaide I started doing cabaret and would always put a few Piaf songs into my shows,” she continues. “And then, one day, I was working as a paid busker at Adelaide Central Market and was singing La Vie En Rose and playing my ukulele and Greg Wain was in the next busking spot after “And, because we’ve had a bit of a break with me. And we discovered we both had a fascination for Piaf. We now often think our last show being in October as a twoit was a no-brainer that we would work week Victorian run, we are always pretty together on a Piaf show. excited about staging Exposing Edith again
“So we put in a proposal for Melbourne Cabaret Festival in 2014 and were accepted and then suddenly thought, ‘Gosh, we have to write a show now’,” Michaela laughs. “But we did the first season in Adelaide at [Grote St’s] La Boheme as part of Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival before taking it to Melbourne. We then put it on the following year for Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival and then got invited to do it at Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2016.
Michaela is quite delighted that Paris’ Caroline Nin will be taking part in the festival. “I saw Caroline’s show when I was a young cabaret artist and fell in love with her,” she says. “I really admire Caroline and am quite obsessed with what she does and can’t wait to see her perform again. And be involved in the same festival as her is such a thrill. “And it’s a French festival too,” Michaela laughs.

baby et lulu
BABY et LULU By Robert Dunstan Babe et Lulu are Abby ‘Baby’ Dobson (pictured left), formerly of the band Leonardo’s Bride and Lara ‘Lulu’ Goodridge (right) of FourPlay String Quartet who, together with their illustrious sextet, present well-known French songs. As such they are known to Adelaide audiences via performances at WOMADelaide, The Garden Of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Trinity Sessions. They are now looking forward to returning to Adelaide to perform at La Soirée Cliché, an auspicious event that will also boast SBS Food Safari’s Maeve O’Meara, with Cliché executive chef Fabien Streit providing a tantalising menu and live body-painting by Emma Hack with Adelaide Festival’s Banquet Room set up for the evening as a French Salon. When BSide Magazine hooks up with Abby via telephone, she is quick to point out that Adelaide always seems to hosting a festival of some kind. “Lara and I were saying that when we got invited to this one,” she laughs. “There seems to be so many festivals in Adelaide
and I often wonder who is responsible and if it’s always been like that. And I wonder how we get the rest of Australia to become as civillised. It’s just fantastic. And people actually book tickets, come out of their houses and head along. It’s wonderful.”
During the course of our delightful, early evening conversation, Abby admits that she often forgets about the existence of Google.
do something. As it happened, Lara had also just bought a book of 20th century French chansons.
“A few months later we were both back in Sydney and Lara was throwing a party and her boyfriend suggested that we sing a French song together,” she says. “So we found an accordion player and did that and completely fell in love with the whole idea of singing songs in French in harmony with each other.
“I’ll go around for weeks with a question about something in my head and then I’ll ask Lara and she’ll just google it,” she says. “She just gets on her phone and tells me the “We were quite smitten with the idea answer immediately. I completely forget and, in folly, we put on a show with you can do that. I just wander “We are told that a six-piece band – for one around with all these questions only – and it went so no one in France show in my head.” well and seemed to strike a is making music chord with everyone,” Abby Abby, who says that Lara and quite like we’re laughs. “We couldn’t work it herself are looking at changing doing. We’ve out – and we still can’t – why their airline tickets so they everyone seems to like two been told that Australian girls singing in can take in more of the French what we are French. Even French people Festival, say Baby et Lulu began when Abby singed to Lara’s doing is quite really like us which I find a record label, Craving Records, bit embarrassing. ‘Oh, you unique.” for her debut solo album, Rise are so good. You should come Up, in 2007. to Paris and play’.” “We’d known each other for a long time because we’d always crossed paths at airports and stuff when we were touring with our bands,” she says. “But we became firm friends when I signed to Lara’s label. And from that we both realised we both had the same sense of humour. “And then I’d moved to Paris for a while and Lara was there on a visit and we realised we both spoke French,” Abby continues. “So, while we’d never played music together before, we thought it might be amusing to
Baby et Lulu would like to do that one day but are not sure how it would happen.
“We’d love to but because we are selfmanaged, we just haven’t managed to make it happen,” Abby sighs. “We need someone to see us and then help us with the bookings and all that. And we also initially thought, ‘Why would French people want to see us?’. But we are told that no one in France is making music quite like we’re doing.
We’ve been told that what we are doing is quite unique.”
Baby et Lulu’s last recorded offering, Album Deux, their second, came out in 2015 and snaffled the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album but are only in the planning stages of what will be their third.
“We are currently just gathering material because, to be honest, there have been other things going on and we have only just paid off the last one,” Abby sighs. “We have to peddle very hard by touring for a good couple of years to pay off the recording debts. It’s expensive.” How do you gather the material for the Baby et Lulu recordings?
“When we first started, Lara and I would listen to lots of records and of quite a bit of research,” Abby says. “We needed to put a repertoire together and there was a certain criteria we were going for without really defining it to each other. We just found we were pretty much in the same spot.
“And now we get our songs from everywhere,” she continues. “For instance, the other day I heard a song, L’amour, L’amour, L’amour, which is Love, Love, Love, on a French television commercial for a supermarket chain. Or Lara will sit up late at night trawling the internet and then send me links. And I’ll go, “Yeah, I like that one’, or, ‘No, I don’t like that one at all’. “Or people will now suggest stuff to us,” Abby says. “They will say, ‘Oh, you must listen to this person’. And, to be honest, I had absolutely no knowledge of French
music at all when we began this. But Baby et Lulu has become so much fun that we often imagine us doing it when we reach 80. We won’t be wearing high heels, but we will probably have to wear wigs. And we probably won’t do much singing either. We’ll just tell stories, smoke cigarettes and drink.” Abby concludes by announcing that she has a new solo album almost in the can which just needs to be mastered.
“I don’t have a release date but it will be some time in the first half of 2018,” she says. ‘I went to Nashville to make it but it’s not a country record. It was just that there is a producer there, Brad Jones, who I really wanted to work with.
“I don’t usually take much notice of producer’s names but I noticed Brad’s name kept coming up on some really great albums I was listening to,” Abby says. “He did Melody Pool’s last two albums and they sound amazing. He also did an album with Bob Evans years ago that I really love.”

tears and plastic tears I often feel the need to start a poem with words like ‘destitution’ or ‘pain’.
these words leap to mind. – like I’m some war hero or torture victim?
Single Review Cathedral/Mt Mountain Independent by Ian Messenger It was just the other day and I was driving down ANZAC Highway and turned on Three D Radio and tuned into what they were playing. Being in the depths of a summer haze I was not particularly aware of what time of the day it was or even what day of the week it was so I had no idea what program I was listening to – now the point of this ramble is that I started thinking about Mt Mountain, they had emailed me a few days before with their press release for their latest single, and I started to think – hey, this is it, this is the new Mt Mountain song! Cathedral is Mt Mountain’s single from their third LP Golden Rise, and kudos to this Perth quintet that you can instantly recognise their music. A distinct style, and signature vibe – the kind of thing that pays the bills, or used to. Cathedral is always driving forward with a rhythm section racing towards the sunset, downhill, footing almost lost on every step yet you can’t stop. Vocal-launches leaving you running in the air, freefalling in reverse and perhaps vacuumed towards their Cathedral in the sky where the weary passenger dips their face into a bowl of heavenly stardust served on a silver tray by strange humanoid pets that have materialised from a Dr Zeus book like reality was some kind of enjoyable nightmare.
Like any serious work of art Cathedral employs both light and shade, and there is certainly a level of subliminal menace creeping out of the walls of this euphoric structure. Recorded with Ron Pollard at Studio Sleepwalkers Dread it certainly indicates the Golden Rise LP will be another solid and popular piece of work by Mt Mountain.
I admit I did wish for a little more hi-fi to the sound of this track. My ears were hanging for more crispness in the drums and even the guitars. Although the genre of psych-rock is a more lo-fi style of delivery, Buried Feather’s 2017 release Mind Of The Swarm shows just how a hi-fi approach can work. Catherdral is by no means lo-fi but my personal taste for it was just to notch up the brilliance a touch. Probably not even worth mentioning. If you want to experience Mt Mountain in the best possible way then get on down to the Grace Emily on Thursday 25 January. Supported by The Dunes and The Howling Fog, they are a band which reins supreme as a live act. One of the best live shows I saw last year. A complete and mature act.
– nails hammered into my skull by green men who refuse my requests for alcohol? morphine? pornographic magazines? puppies and kittens? ham sandwiches? fast cars? a perfectly shaved pussy on a bed of garden salad? not much going on in life but is this ‘destitution’, or ‘pain’? is this Syria?
so there are men in this city getting prolonged and slowed-down blowjobs whilst they hold wineglasses in their hand filled with pinot noir hand-squeezed in the Adelaide Hills then tickled down the breast of the vintner’s wife;
so I may be staring at blank kitchen walls with only cups of tea to make and television to watch until the sun rises over this earth crust no god would deign to witness. no matter.
when people grow old, become sick and then die it’s just like turning off your computer and then on again. pigeons will coo again, like the sound my iMac with every reboot.
wars will rage and profits will be made for those who can get in on it.
