Heaps Good Friends have a busy weekend coming up at the tail end of February.
“Yeah, we do,” Nick says. “We do O’Fiesta on the Friday night at Flinders Uni and then fly over to Perth on Saturday to play Hyperfest – that’s a youth-focused event – and then come straight back to do Grounded’s Supermassive on Sunday. So, yeah, a big weekend.” At the end of March, they will march off on a huge national tour.
HEAPS GOOD FRIENDS By Robert Dunstan Things have taken off heaps quickly for effervescent Adelaide synth pop trio Heaps Good Friends (photographed above and on the front cover of this issue by Kate Potter) as they have already toured around the country with Jungle Giants and made only their second live appearance at Groovin’ The Moo after having scored considerable radio support from triple j and then being selected by the station for the Unearthed slot at the festival. The trio (Nick, Emma and Dan on drums) are now set to open for Holy Holy at the Governor Hindmarsh in coming weeks, perform at Flinders University’s O’Fiesta alongside Dune Rats and San Cisco before appearing as part of Grounded’s Supermassive event alongside Sarah Blasko as part of Adelaide Fringe at Victoria Square. (Tarntanyangga).
The trio’s gestation, however, can be traced back to almost a decade ago when Nick first encountered Emma. “About 10 years ago I was working with Carclew Youth Arts on a kind of dance theatre production for young people in Port Pirie and Emma was one of those young
people,” Nick says. “She and I hit it off right away and then started mucking around with music and then, it must have been a week later, Emma said, ‘Hey, can I play you some of my songs?’ “And I was like, ‘What! You never told me you wrote songs’, and she came out with these really intense adolescent anthems while playing on an old nylon string,” he continues. “So we recorded some demos in the G Wing of Gladstone Gaol and then we did an EP at Broadcast Studios in the city and she launched at the Exeter Hotel.
“It’s the first one on our own two feet,” Nick calmly announces “And it’s quite exciting because it’s all come about due to that initial triple j support. It was a big jump for us to go from Unearthed to being put on high rotation. And being picked by triple j to play Groovin’ The Moo led to us touring around the country with Jungle Giants and playing some amazing venues.
“I sometimes think we may have a skewed perspective of what it’s like to be in a band because it’s all pretty much been a high for us,” he says. ‘There’s a nice buzz about us at “I sometimes the moment and people are interested in what we are doing.

“Emma then took off on an adventure overseas and was away for about seven years but she moved back to Brisbane the year before last and I said, ‘Let’s get together and write some songs’. So she was coming down from Brisbane every six or so weeks and it was the fourth song we wrote, Let’s Hug Longer, that got a lot of traction on triple j. So it’s all gone from there. And now it’s Heaps Good Friends.” Heaps Good Friends’ latest offering, I Could Eat A Whole Packet Of Yo Yo’s, comes with a vibrant video filmed at Goodwood’s art deco Capri Theatre.
“I lived in the Goodwood area for a while and could never get over what a beautiful building that theatre is,” Nick enthuses. “And also how wonderful that Wurlitzer theatre organ is. So when it came time to shoot a video, I thought we couldn’t go wrong swinging some video cameras around in there.
“We also have a handful of new tunes that we’ll be testing out,” Nick concludes. “There’s no set date for an album yet as there are no so many ways of doing that. Do you release a heap of single and then put out a a full album? We haven’t consolidated that yet because we think it will depend on the songs in terms of how they sound when placed together.”

“And there will be more overseas stuff coming up later in the year,” he notes. “And it is mostly festivals as they are a good way to get yourself known. You reach people who, because they don’t really know what you do, think twice about going to a club gig.” Lachy reckons he has about four brand new songs pretty much set to go.
THE LACHY DOLEY GROUP By Robert Dunstan Hammond and Whammy Clavinet player and singer Lachey Doley, currently based in Sydney, is greatly looking forward to making a return to his hometown with his group (drummer Jackie Barnes and bass player Joel Burton) for another show at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel which follows a successful venture about a year ago at the award winning live music venue. “I can’t wait to get back because the last show there was awesome,” he says. “We’d only pre-sold about 60 tickets for that but it turned into a ripper show with about 150 people rolling up. But for this one we’ve already pre-sold close to that already so it should go really well.” Lachy was speaking from his hotel room in Thredbo, NSW, where he was playing three shows over the weekend at Thredbo Blues Festival.
“And from my hotel room, I can hear Gail Page playing,” he says of the Adelaide-based singer who was also on the line-up. “I’ll nip down and say hello later.”
Lachy was born and raised in Adelaide where he played with various bands, including The Blues Brothers & Sisters Of Soul and power soul combo Double Wammy, as well as fronting his own acid jazz combo. He then got a call to replace his keyboardplaying brother, Clayton, in a Sydney band for a few shows and never returned home. He has since played keyboards in Jimmy Barnes’ band, toured internationally as the unofficial sixth member of Powderfinger after being invited to play on the band’s
Vulture Street album and forged his own career.
Last year was a pretty big one for the musician as he once again toured overseas where he received a huge response and also played around this country – unfortunately not in Adelaide – as a member of Glenn Hughes’ band who were presenting Deep Purple material.
“I’ll finish them off and then get straight into the studio to get them done for a new release,” he says. “It will be studio record number five and I’ll self-fund it the oldfashioned way. Pozible works for some – I used it to get over to Memphis a few years ago – and I reckon it’s a great way to bring artists and their audience together but it’s something I’ll only use for something really special.”
Lachy doesn’t expect the new songs will get an airing at his Adelaide show although, ‘There will be some songs I didn’t play last time’.

Lachy has hand-picked Adelaide’s Stefan Hauk, who just launched his debut CD Long Road, as the opening act and the guitar player and singer will be joined on the night by a rhythm section. “He’s nice player,” Lachy says, “And it’s good to hear that he’s doing so well with his music.”
Lachy recently suggested via Facebook that he was seeking an iconic South Australian song to perform at his Adelaide show and was overwhelmed with suggestions. “I’ve whittled it down and got a few ideas,” he says. “I just have to work out which one is going to work best with the three-piece but I reckon we’ll have a pretty cool one. It’s going to be a surprise on the night.” Lachy will head off overseas again in May for some European festival dates.

So they’ve been awesome.” It also ties in nicely with the fact Squeaker will be launching at new single, The Touch, when they serve as one of Crystal’s three special guest acts.
“Yeah, that is awesome,” Crystal enthuses. “And I’m glad that Tabula Rasa are on the bill because, back in the day, Bellusira played with them as well. So it’s going to be really good. And it’s been ages since I last played the Crown & Anchor.
“It’ll be just like old times,” she concludes with a laugh. “And I love Adelaide because the crowd really gets into it and everyone is really nice. And, yeah, unless I am suddenly offered some kind of support slot on an international artist’s Australian tour, it will be the last time I will be playing in Adelaide for quite a while.”

DING DONG By Robert Dunstan Adelaide’s Unmasked Theatre are set to present the play Ding Dong, from the successful French play Sexe et Jalousie by Marc Camoletti that was first produced in France in 1995 and England in 2005 as adapted for the English stage by Tudor Gates. BSide Magazine spoke to director Allen Puttock who says that Unmasked Theatre has been around for about 10 years. “But about six years ago I got very busy with work and [producer] Michael PageSharp and I put it on hold,” he begins. “And then last year, the Lithuanian Club asked if we wanted to put on another play. And Mike and I looked at each other and said, ‘It looks like we are back into the theatre world again’.” How did Unmasked Theatre go about selecting Ding Dong to present as their comeback run?
“Over the years I’ve done quite a number of plays with Blackwood Players and have directed all over the country so am familiar with a lot of plays,” Allen says. “And the last play Unmasked did was a Camoletti play. It was one that went under various names when translated from French – Pyjamas For Six was one – but we put it on as Lovers, Liars & Leftovers. So we knew his work and we

“We had a strong, core group of actors to choose from in the beginning but, because we took a break, many of them have fallen away,” Allen says. “So we did that Facebook thing and got a good response.”
One budding person who responded was Wil Oakeshott who is well-known as a contemporary music writer who has also done stand up comedy. “Wil had responded saying that he wasn’t quite in the right age group,” Allen says. “But I said come along anyway and I think he was the second person we signed on. “And I tend to audition people in a very different way to most directors. Rather than give them a set piece to read, I just sit down and talk to them and can generally gather from that whether they would be suitable for the role or not.

Blenheim Music & Camping Festival, held a working farm in the Clare Valley just an hour and a half north of Adelaide, is back for 2018 and boasts its biggest line-up yet over the coming Easter long weekend and will have two days of music, dancing, camping and all round good vibes. The festival will kick off from 5.30pm on Thursday 29 March featuring seven artists (West Thebarton, Mia Dyson, Karl S Williams, Ukulele Death Squad, Kelly Brouhaha, The Skeleton Club and The Shambolics).

People don’t plan stuff – they just expect it to happen – and I don’t know where people get that from. Look, I know other things come into play, but really, you just get one go at life so it needs to have some kind of plan.”
RONNIE TAHENY By Robert Dunstan Following some three decades of live performances that have taken her around the world and back again, Ronnie Taheny has announced her annual outing with news that it’s to be the last of its kind. That is not to say, however, that she won’t ever tread the boards again in the future. “Look, if someone asks me to be on their event, I will certainly consider it,” Ronnie begins. “It’s just that I don’t want to do it myself anymore. It’s not that I’m afraid of hard work but it’s time for me to look at other things.
“But yes, if someone else wants to put me onto their event or festival, then I will look at it because it would seem like a breeze to roll up to a gig and not have to worry about a PA, the publicity, the production, the posters and all that. So I am not retiring from live work. I am just retiring from presenting my own shows.”
Ronnie’s Arty Records successfully toured American artist SONiA (disappear fear) at the beginning of the year and says it’s something she may possibly consider doing more of. “Since then I’ve been approached by other overseas indie artists about doing something for them,” she says. “It’s something I’ll look at but I don’t want to get too bogged down with becoming a tour promoter.” Ronnie also mentors young up and coming artists and has a number of clients. “It can take quite a while for a young artist to become established,” she reasons. “But I

THE FLUERIEU BLUSBREAKERS By Robert Dunstan Hailing from the southern vales, The Fleurieu Bluesbreakers came into being when vocalist and harmonica player Brian Cain returned to the area after spending some 15 years working in the Hunter Valley. The blues-influenced band have already recorded an album, The Devil Lives Down My Street, and have lost no time in securing a healthy number of gigs including a monthly, Sunday afternoon residency. “I had a band n the Hunter Valley, Indian Phoenix, who were predominately a heavy boogie-based band but when I move back to SA, I wanted to put together something that was a bit more traditional.”

“We had recorded stuff but never put them it properly,” he sighs. “It was out there – Down Under went to number one on a radio station in Texas – but, due to my ignorance at the time, nothing was ever promoted properly.

HAYSTACKS CALHOON By Robert Dunstan Haystacks Calhoon, who formed from the ashes of psychobilly combo The Hoodoo Voodoo Dolls, came into being in November of 2016 and last year recorded an EP, Good Good Night Out, which they are all set to unleash upon the world. The lively quartet, brothers Jake (AKA J-Mo Stax on guitar) and double bass player Eddie Morrison (AKA The Colonel), Matt ‘ToneWolf’ Gregan and Antoine ‘One Tonne’ Jelk, were invited to take part in the official program launch of last year’s Semaphore Music Festival and have since played numerous gigs in an around Adelaide. CHRIS BOTTI American jazz trumpeter Chris Botti has announced that he will be playing music from his many albums at Grote St’s Her Majesty’s Theatre on Monday 19 February with tickets via BASS.
But what about getting them all in the same place at the same time? They’re all busy people and surely Kylie mostly lives in England?
It was a logistical nightmare!... I was talking with them, like with Guy, who does a lot of big movies, and they all said that rehearsals in movie productions are a thing of the past, they’re gone. And that could be partly why so many movies are so bad, because sometimes the actors don’t even meet each other until the first day of shooting… Where did you wind up shooting the film?
swinging safari SWINGING SAFARI by MDB Stephan Elliott was in Melbourne (“Um, I think I am!”) when he recently spoke by phone to BSide about his latest effort, Swinging Safari, and discussed the difficulties in casting six big Aussie stars, the complexities of music licensing nowadays, and just how much of the movie is drawn from his actual experiences as a lad back in those wonderfully chaotic ’70s.
The aspiring filmmaker teenager is you then? You betcha.
And so your parents were friendly sometimes very friendly - with the neighbours like that? To my knowledge yes, the cul-de-sac was a bit like that… In those days you mingled with the neighbours, the people who lived closest to you, and your parents mingled with the parents of the kids you went to school with. It was a very tight-knit street and all sorts of shenanigans were going on…
Could you also confirm that the film was originally called Flammable Children?
“Are you kidding? Do you know how much it cost to get that in the movie? A quarter of a million dollars!”
My parents have said, ‘That didn’t happen!’, to parts of this but, you know, the wife-swapping parties, they really Well, I only make a movie every five or six did happen. We were going to shoot in Dee Why in New South Wales but it wasn’t right and so we wound up shooting on the Gold Coast, which was great! The developers haven’t quite got their hands on a lot of it… Guy and Kylie’s house, well, we were the last living things in it, and on the second to last day the wrecking balls were turning up.
It was, and it was always called that in my mind, but we went out and tested it and everyone thought we were making a horror film. So it was retitled Swinging Safari after the Bert Kaempfert instrumental [which is actually called A Swingin’ Safari]? Although it’s not the original Bert version in the movie, right?
Are you kidding? Do you know how much it cost to get that in the movie? A quarter of a million dollars! You’ve got to understand that now that no one buys CDs anymore and you can just download everything, that means that music licensing in the last five years has exploded! If I did the Priscilla soundtrack now it would cost at least 11 million dollars! Okay Stephan, sorry about that. And after Swinging Safari what do you do now? Mate, I’ve got to say that this has been such a labour of love, and it’s been so personal and I’ve really put my head on the chopping block for it, what I really want to do next is have a really, really good lie-down. Swinging Safari is now screening at cinemas everywhere.

MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE (M) **1/2 THE COMMUTER (M) ***1/2 Liam Neeson’s surprising and pleasing rebirth as an older action star continues with this, his fourth action-thriller for Barcelona-born producer/ director Jaume Collet-Sera, and while Liam has announced that he’s not going to be doing any more of these sort of pics (he’s 66 this year and wants to do serious dramatic films again), he’s going out on a high note.

EXETER BLUES By Robert dunstan Exeter Blues is the duo of Dave O’Leary on guitar, vocals and harmonica and Beej Barker on drums and percussion and they are about to launch a new offering, Mumbo Jumbo Deluxe, so we got on the blower to Dave and discovered that while the act is relatively new to this state, they were a going concern for some years when he lived interstate.
“I knew Keith because we used to play together in Sydney and he was the one who put me in touch with Robbie Souter – the late Robbie Souter of Dynamic Hepnotics – and we then did and album together,” Dave explains. “And then when I moved back to Adelaide, Keith said I should get in contact with Beej which has worked out well. “He’s a great muso and a nice bloke too,” he says of Beej who spent many years touring with Kasey Chambers. “So it’s always great to work with people like that because it makes everything so easy going.”
Dave says the duo have quite a repertoire upon which to draw as there are now four releases under the name Exeter Blues, two under the name Exeter Groove and a couple of solo offerings. “And I used to do heaps of blues covers in the old days,” he says. “You sometimes had to throw a few in but I always modified them. But now, it’s mostly originals and the occasional cover. “And we’ve done the Wheatsheaf before and it’s gone well there,” Dave concludes. “And the nice thing about what we do is that Beej gets to be very expressive. There’s only the two of us, so the drums are not just sitting at the back.”
