and I learnt so much about the craft of storytelling and context and call-backs and all of that from them, and um, I love it!” enthuses Joel. “I can’t imagine doing any other style of stand up.”
When asked about school life and what kind of kid he was, if he was the class clown or more reserved, Joel explains that he was mostly bored at school and slightly reserved.
joel creasey Joel Creasey by I.C.T. Messenger The Adelaide Fringe Festival is upon us again and who better to have as our cover story for this edition of BSide Magazine than the official ambassador of the Fringe, Mr Joel Creasey himself. BSide got on the phone to this gregarious raconteur of the world’s comedy stages and had a great chat. From New York to the UK, commentator of Eurovision, GQ Comedian of the Year and fresh from the set of Neighbours where Joel threw himself with relish into the role of a slut – no matter what walk of life you’re from everyone relates to the storytelling wit of Joel Creasey.
Comedy writing is perhaps one of the darkest arts, along with politics and horseracing, and when asked Joel explains that his comedy comes from his life experiences that he simply retells much in the same vein as Joan Rivers and her approach to stand up. “I think most comedians write their stand up out word for word and go and practice and practice and practice it,” says Joel. “I’m a bit different in that because my stand up is very autobiographical and literally every year is just an update of all the terrible things I have gotten up to in the past year to my audience.
“I just kind of live my year, and I’m one of those people who just fall into ridiculous situations. When something terrible happens to me I go, ‘well at least that will make good stand up,’ and I start compiling in my head. And then around now [before this tour] I start laying them all out and going, ‘all right, what’s the show, what’s
the storyline, what’s happened in the past year?’
“I was never the class clown. I was more the one at the back of the room whispering jokes under my breath to my friends around me. I was still a total teacher’s pet, but because I’m a backstabber,” laughs Joel, “I was nice to the teacher’s faces but then I’d just tear them to shreds under my breath.
“But I was so bored at school because I had my mind and heart set on performance. And “For example,” explains Joel, “in the past I went to an all-boys school that offered year I’ve been to Eurovision, I released football scholarships – there wasn’t a whole a book, I did Neighbours –um so they’re lot there for me,” laments Joel. “Apart from all so ridiculous – and I call a writing the boys!” partner but we don’t write any of it out. We basically sit around, Joel Creasey explains that “I’m a bit different coming to the Adelaide Fringe have a coffee, have a wine, and I tell her all in that because my is something he is really looking the stories and she says, stand up is very forward to, and as Fringe ‘that’s hilarious, put that ambassador he expects to autobiographical assume some feudal privileges. in the show. Do that one first, do that one second.’ and literally every Then I kind of just get up year is just an “Well it will be my world and do it. I don’t really premiere of the show. I mean update of all the I’m working on the show at the practice them.” terrible things I moment. I don’t really finalise If you have ever seen one have gotten up to it until the week before, in my of Joel Creasey’s shows You know there’s still in the past year to mind. you are immediately stuff happening right up until my audience.” I do it. The show is constantly impressed at how well he crafts a story, but he has changing. never studied storytelling like a literary writer might. “I’m excited,” enthuses Joel. “I’m also the Adelaide Fringe Festival ambassador this “The crazy thing is I sit around with my year, so I think I have the power to knight friends who are so much funnier than people and have people executed, so I’m me and they’re not even comedians excited about that. Yeah I’m going to have and I go, ‘oh, I wish I could tell a story Matt Gilbertson beheaded.” like you do,’” says Joel. “Um, so I kind of just learn off the people around me. Joel Creasey will be performing And I think the good thing is to not his show Blonde Bombshell be surrounded by comedians but by in the Garden of Unearthly different people who bring different things to the table. Delights for the Adelaide Fringe. “But in terms of my comedy inspirations I have always loved storytelling comedians like Fiona O’Loughlin and Joan Rivers. I actually think female comics are far superior to male comics in the storytelling department. I actually think they are far superior to male comics in all areas to be honest,” jokes Joel. “But particularly storytelling. I was lucky enough to tour with Joan Rivers and Fiona O’Loughlin for many years

we all thought we’d just do the old stuff we used to play. But, because I have a studio in Melbourne, we may think about doing something. It’s just not something that’s on the top of the list of things to do.” Guitarist Phil Colson is Sia’s father.
“And it’s funny because there’s a photo of Rum Jungle from back in the day where we are all standing on a bridge on Hackney Rd and Phil is holding a little baby Sia,” James laughs. “And when Sia was singing with Crisp, they got offered a deal with an English label and she asked my advice about it. I said, ‘Yeah, jump on it’, but nothing came of it.
Rum jungle THE LEGENDARY RUM JUNGLE By Robert Dunstan Adelaide’s Rum Jungle were one of the more popular bands on the scene back in the ’70s and Friday evenings spent at North Adelaide’s Lord Melbourne Hotel have become the stuff of legend for those who can remember any of it. The band, guitarist Phil Colson, bass players Ian McDonald and Rod Cornish, saxophonist Bruce Sandow, keyboard player James Black and new recruit Mark Meyer on drums, all went their separate ways with all going on to play with some of Australia’s finest. I still recall going to a gig in Sydney at The Basement to catch jazz stylist Vince Jones and was delighted to see that not only was Bruce was playing sax with him but Phil was at the bar. Ian Mcdonald went on to play with Stars, Rod Cornish became a session musician and James Black still plays with Mondo Rock as well as being involved in SBS’ RocKwiz. “I only do the RocKwiz tours now,” James says. “I’ve taken a break from the television show. It was time to do that.” Rum Jungle reformed in 2015 to play in the Garden Of Unearthly Delights during that
year’s Adelaide Fringe and it proved to be a huge success.
“And Phil also just played at the 50th anniversary show of Foreday Riders and I flew up to Sydney for that,” he then announces. “And it was a fabulous thing because they had invited all the guitar players that had ever been with them over the years. And 50 years is something to celebrate.”
James, who produced Adelaide’s band The Hiptones’ debut album, Right Now, says that he still enjoys touring with Mondo Rock but it’s a different experience from treading the boards with Rum Jungle.
“Mondo Rock is a serious, well-oiled machine with nothing left to chance,” he suggests. “But Rum Jungle is just a lot of fun.
“And then we were asked to do it again,” “And another thing I love doing is playing James says, “but we weren’t interested. More so me because it’s a lot “It was worth the with Benny & The Fly By Nighters,” James enthuses. of work and I was the one effort of getting “They are a jump blues band putting all the nuts and bolts everyone back from Melbourne and I’ve together because everyone together for that toured overseas with them. else is spread all over the place. So here we are stage a show at The German Club (AKA again. To be honest, I thought af2018 we’d be lucky to get 150 people along – that’s what I was expecting and quietly hoping for – but it was more than double that. It was quite a surprise. “And we could only play a short set too,” he says. “So we thought we’d do it again at the German Club where we’ll have no real restraints. And Phil had said last time, ‘Hey, let’s play some new songs’, but

This is a farcical book, a total sham of a book, and not just in the made-up biographies of a fabricated literary cannon, but even in the acknowledgements, the dedication and author bio, even on the very first page that lists ‘other books by the author’, on the page that offers up publishing information such as who’s credited with the author’s photo, and in the index (the index might well be the funniest part of the book). Everything about this book is fake news, though Donald Trump, with his lacking sense of humour, most likely wouldn’t get it.
Their Brilliant Careers, Ryan O’Neill Black Inc, 2016 Reviewed by Heather Taylor Johnson 2017 has been a cracker for Ryan O’Neill with a Prime Minister’s Award and a Miles Franklin shortlisting (among others) for his book Their Brilliant Careers: The Fantastic Lives of Sixteen Extraordinary Australian Writers. These are serious awards for serious writing, and if I’m going to imagine the judges discussing O’Neill’s book at their deliberation meeting, I’m going to say they were laughing, there was maybe even a little leg-slapping, too, because contrary to popular belief, humour does have a place in literary fiction; it’s just that writers rarely go there.
ron the ox Ron The Ox by I.C.T. Messenger Ron The Ox is a five-man gang of rock’n roll energy and are currently engaged in the Friday night residency spot at The Grace Emily Hotel for all of February. BSide Magazine caught with Ox instigator Tom Kennedy in the beer garden at the back of the Grace and sank some brews and had a chat about this coveted residency gig.
Frederick Stratford is ‘the boldest and most successful plagiarist of the twentieth century,’ whose books include Odysseus, The Enchanted Mountain, Mrs Galloway, The Sun Comes Up Too, and A Journey to India, hacking into the wares of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Mann, Hemingway and EM. Forster; Sydney Steele is Australia’s best known writer even though, through disastrous mishaps, has no published work; Addison Tiller, author of the Pa and Pete ‘Homestead Stories’, is considered the ‘Chekov of Coolabah’, a major bush writer, truly ocker, though the only place he’d ever been, outside of his native England, was Sydney. These characters and many like them are ridiculous inventions, sometimes taking on attributes of true-life writers (the science fiction writer Rand Washington founded a cult called the Transvoidists, not unlike L.Ron Hubbard’s Church of Scientology), and they’re very, very funny, but sometimes there’s tragedy, and it’s O’Neill’s poignant melding of the heartbreak with the comic that takes Their Brilliant Careers out of the ‘merely hilarious’ tagline and enters it into something quite affecting. Matilda Young, for example, Australia’s first Nobel laureate, spent her childhood under the brutal whim of her poetry-hating step-father and her literary career battling extreme sexism (after winning the Nobel prize, the Western Sydney Advertiser ran a missable article titled ‘Sydney
“We hounded him pretty much,” Tom explains when referring to Grace management and getting the residency spot. “We’ve known George for a number of years from our old band The Sweet Decline. We played here many times, we had a residency in the past. And with Ron The Ox we had a couple of shows here that have been pretty successful. Beers over the counter always helps as well to get a gig.” Ron The Ox was formed in some way out of a reshuffle of The Sweet Decline, with the drummer being pulled out from the backline to the front. “Ron The Ox has been around coming up to two years. It was a bit of a by-product at the end of The Sweet Decline. Lee [Kennedy, cousin] and I were in The Sweet Decline, and when that finished up we decided to move Lee from the drums to frontman, he started learning guitar, and I moved from frontman of The Sweet Decline to bass player for Ron The Ox.”
Housewife Wins Writing Competition’, the kudos of ‘Australia’s first Nobel prize winner’ going to the true-life Patrick White). It’s not an unlikable story in today’s world, and in fact it’s strong commentary on the persisting gender bias of this industry. Even Tiller’s tale of living a lie as a ridgie-didge bushman is tragic in that he never could come clean, he never could write the serious literature he longed to. These writers, whether they are spoofs of real literary icons or O’Neill’s original inventions, have much to do with one another’s careers and personal lives, flitting in and out of each other’s bios, so that it’s not just sixteen characters he’s created but an entire bygone literary landscape. Readers will love the occasional appearances of and homages to actual literary figures such as Peter Carey, Helen Garner, David Malouf and Charlotte Wood. O’Neill himself pops in and out, too. O’Neill cleverly takes the micky out of the industry again and again. In one example he lists ‘three massive Australian poetry anthologies of the 1960s, Classic Australian Poems (1961), The Classic Poems of Australia (1965) and Australia’s Classic Poems (1969)’, which reminds me of a time not too long ago when we had the annual end-of-the-year anthologies Best Australian Poems and Best Australian Poetry. He references such literary journals as the conservative Quarter (the real-life Quarterly) and its leftists counterpart Overground (Overland), and it’s either our longstanding Southerly or Westerly that, in Their Brilliant Careers, becomes Northerly. In his send-up of the notorious Ern Malley hoax, he gives us the ‘Chapman affair’. One needn’t know the inside scoop on our literary history, but it certainly enhances the laugh-track, which leads me to my final assessment: for literary fanatics, this book is endlessly entertaining, and for those who aren’t so much into literature but enjoy the occasional read, this book is endlessly entertaining.
Half of the residency is already done but the third and fourth Fridays of February are yet to come. “The third week we have an acoustic night happening. It’s probably a first for Ron The Ox, we haven’t done any acoustic stuff before. So Anthony [Carbone] will be doing acoustic. And we have Ant Candelish from Ride Into The Sun with his new band Lost Palms I think it’s called, they’re playing. And we have Christopher Jaw-Moss. And the last night we have Conner’s [Jolly] band Chinese New Year.” Catch Ron The Ox on Fridays throughout February at The Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth Street, Adelaide. Free entry.

Think Beastie Boys in 2027 going mental with invisible synthesizers, think DZ Deathrays going chow-mein, think white kids getting funked-up as they burn the rules of what you are meant to do with a drum kit and an electric guitar, think carving out your own schtick as you take over the famed Wo-Hop restaurant in NYC’s Chinatown – the location for the Zombies clip of intriguing one-shot iPhone minimalism. This newly formed setup of old time collaborators Steve Tyssen on drums and Julian Schweitzer on guitar is as powerful as it is original. The drum kit is pummelled more than pounded giving such a strong groove that the
The guitar tones that Schweitzer manages to create are truly 2018. Mirror Lies was an LP released by his other band Greenthief last year and aspirations for tonal originality were obvious. Zombies has Schweitzer’s guitar as a refreshingly unique palate of wah, synth and some secret lo-fi ingredient that, in the context of the whole mix, and in the words of ol’ mate Lebowski, ties the whole goddamn room together.
Listen to Zombies here, and wait like waiting for the man for the underground bacchanal that will be Deathbeat’s debut EP to be released later this year.

“He was more into dance music,” he laughs. since then we’ve put on something like 50 “Pity that.” shows with over 200 performances,” Colin says.
BROTHER 2 BROTHER By Robert Dunstan Brothers Mark and Craig Holden used to play music together back in the late ’60 at The Pancake Kitchen in Adelaide but then ceased to do so as their university studies became more serious. Following university, Craig played with The Moonshine Jug & String Band, while Mark went off to become a pop star which then took him around the world as a songwriter before he moved back to this country and was a judge on the first seasons of Australian Idol. “So when Mark came back here – he lives in Melbourne – we’d get together some weekends and the guitars and songs would come out,” Craig says. “So that’s been great because it had been such a long time.”
That has led to the show Brother 2 Brother, a unique affair as it has Mark and Craig sharing vocals backed by The Rob Pippan Band. Craig sings some of his favourite rock, soul and pop covers with the high energy show also boasting much banter. “And Mark sings his hit songs and some of the hit songs he wrote for others such as Vanessa Amorosi,” Craig says of the show which enjoyed a successful run last year.
Brothers Craig and Mark Holden will be backed by a seven-piece band when they present their acclaimed Brother 2 Brother show in the Domain Theatre at Marion Cultural Centre, 287 Diagonal Rd, Oaklands Pk, on Friday 16 February and Saturday 17 February as part of Adelaide Fringe with tickets via FringeTIX. https://www.adelaidefringe. com.au/fringetix/brother-tobrother-af2018
THE GERMAN CLUB (AKA THE GC) By Robert Dunstan Adelaide’s The German Club (AKA The GC) has been involved in hosting Adelaide Fringe shows for several years now and, in conjunction with Ignition Entertainment and Rob Pippan Productions, will again be presenting a huge array of productions that span music, magic, dance, cabaret, comedy and theatre in 2018.
Mark’s son, Cane Goldsworthy, also steps up Ignition Entertainment’s Colin Koch says on stage. that he ‘discovered’ The German Club, which has five dedicated performance “And that’s great,” Craig says. “He sang a spaces, when looking for somewhere couple of songs last time and I think he’s suitable to present a show. going to do more this time. And he’s got a great voice – have you seen his band, Gorilla Jones? And it’s great that Mark has his son “I think that back then they had one Fringe show happening – and that was up there with him. I gave my son a guitar for his 14th birthday but he never really got someone from Queensland – so back in 2015 we did four or five nights there and into it.
“And, for 2018, we’ve got over 40 shows,” he says of events from the USA’s ever-popular Movin’ Melvin Brown, Germany’s Sylvia Brécko, UK magician Dave Rueben, UK comedians Claire Ford, Nicky Wilkinson, and Gary Tro along with two shows, Gypsy Fire Electric and Lord Of The Strings!, from the UK’s Matthew Fagan.
And then there are the multitude of music shows at the club presented by Rob Pippan Productions that include Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks, Mike Rudd, Rum Jungle, Glenn Shorrock, The Brewster Brothers, Field, See & Mason and Nathaniel Willemse presenting a tribute to Marvin Gaye. In conjunction with Shingleback Wine, the club will also be presenting a series of free entry showcases in its expansive Showroom from 1pm on Saturday 17 February, Saturday 24 February, Saturday 3 March and Saturday 10 March at which there will be cameo appearances from the stars of the venue’s full program of theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, dance and magic. Colin suggests that the German Club has proven popular with punters as it offers a different kind of Adelaide Fringe experience that is far enough away from the madding crowds. “We seem to have mastered the art of being a ‘friendly’ venue,” he says with a laugh. “The outdoor pop-up Fringe venues are great and offer a lot, but they are not for everyone, especially those who are a bit older. A show at the German Club is much more of a theatrical experience with decent sound and lighting. “So people feel quite comfortable,’ Colin suggests. “It also has proper toilets.”

Do you get nervous before a performance? If so, how do you get over this? “I used to get nervous to the point of throwing up when we first started. But I think it all comes with time and figuring out a routine to relax yourself before the show. Usually a feed, a couple drinks and being surrounded by a handful of the best people calms down the nerves for me.” What’s been the most memorable gig you’ve played so far and why?
ZOLORAGE By Robert Dunstan Zelorage hail from Renmark but the rock band relish any opportunity to travel down and play a show in Adelaide. Such will be the case when they venture to the big smoke once again on Valentine’s Day to play Fowler’s Live as one of two local opening acts – the other being Octanic – on American rock band Saliva’s first ever visit to our shores.
We contacted the band’s drummer, Mark Polst, and asked how they would describe their music to those who have not come across then before?
“We are very similar to ’90s-inspired heavy rock and nu-metal. Huge riffs and drums with bass lines that bring everything together. I personally think our music hits a broad range of emotions. We fit in the metal category, but we definitely aren’t your typical full on, flat=out metal. “Moreso, something to jump and mosh to.”
How did Zelorage – Mark alongside Sam on vocals and guitar and Rowan on bass – get together?
“We all went to high school together. We lived next door to each other about 10kms out of town, but we didn’t even know each other or become a band until we hit high school.” What were the band’s early musical influences and how have these changed over time? “Early influences ranged from Silverchair to Sunk Loto, Korn, Coal Chamber, Staind, Sevendust. All that ’90s goodness. I think not much has changed. The original influences are still my favourites but it seems we have picked up a few newer style bands and artists along the way. Where have you performed in the past and with what bands?
“We’ve performed all over Australia apart from WA and Tasmania. Previously supported Sevendust and Drowning Pool at the Gov, hed PE at the Prince Bandroom in Melbourne and every regional town or city you can think of in SA and Victoria. How did the upcoming show at Fowler’s Live with Saliva and Octanic come about? “We have dealt with Metropolis Touring before – the Sevendust and Drowning Pool shows – and always did pretty good with crowd attendance numbers. So they seem to help us out a lot with fitting us in with touring bands that we are suited to.”
“Being the main support for Sevendust’s Adelaide show! It was sold out and I got to meet one of my drumming heroes [Morgan Rose] who inspired me to be a drummer.” Where are you up to recording-wise?
“We have three full length albums out. And now a single that is to be released with a clip at the end of this month called When You Turn and a fourth full-length album towards the end of 2018. And who would be your dream musician to play with? “Abe Cunningham of Deftones. Need I say more, ha, ha.” Future plans for you guys? “A few single releases in 2018 followed by the album and hopefully a lot more touring and great support slots!”
American hard rockers Saliva are embarking on their first tour of Australia and will be playing Fowler’s Live, 68 North Tce, Adelaide, on Wednesday 14 February with special guests Octanic and Zelorage and tickets via Moshtix. http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/ saliva-usa/99997 Hit up Zelorage and Octanic’s Facebook pages for discounted tickets.

WEST THEBARTON Still flushed from their recent name change and the addition of smashing new drummer Caitlin Thomas, Adelaide’s seven-headed rock-hydra West Thebarton are fresh back from joining soul rock faves Polish Club on their national tour in late 2017. West Thebarton are also right on the edge of letting new tunes spill outta their locker. Reverend Ray and the gang have been committing their suburban homilies to tape and they’re sounding tip top. Jammed with even more charm and excitement than their Moving Out and Red Or White singles. This year is going to be a big one for the band. “Whether they make a lot of coin from their experience of selling art or just use it as a networking experience, I am not sure, but I derive much pleasure from creating a Forum for which these fine folk can display,” This year will be the sixth annual Low Brow Luau held at his beloved Colonel Light Gardens RSL “I always enjoy that gig and really dig the many musicians that have played for us at such a fair price.” As for the picture of the mid-century man with a brush in his hand?
Raymond P MoonDog, wellknown for his association with Kustom Kulture Weekender which makes a return in April of this year at its now regular home of Plympton’s The Highway, regularly holds signwriting workshops and has another coming up next weekend.
MoonDog started his signwriting apprenticeship way back in the day, let’s just say, ‘He has had a brush in his hand for 40 years’.
He states. ‘It’s always nice to go out to a gig and see someone wearing a MoonDog T-Shirt’. Other facets that he enjoys include garage art’ that naive/ untrained and low brow style that, ‘Everyone should have a crack at’ if they enjoy the colour and nature of an alternative life style, its surroundings and space.
In his spare time he has amongst other things been involved in the Kustom Kulture Weekender pretty much since inception.

“I have been doing these workshops based on demand for four years now and I can’t tell you how much I dig it. The next is approaching soon. I am happy to send out an information sheet to those that may want to learn.” A final few words, MoonDog?
“Hipsters call it a ‘fashion’ but I call it my life.”

“I think we’ve put out 20 albums – maybe more, maybe less – or something,” he says. “But we kept putting out singles in the hope one would take off like I’ll Be Gone did. You see, that’s the problem with your first song being your biggest and only hit. It’s often the only song people know.
mike rudd’s 1st base MIKE RUDD’S 1ST BASE by Robert Dunstan New Zealand-born Mike Rudd (far left) reasons that he has kept going so long because he’s actually a slacker. Here for Adelaide Fringe to present Life After Life with his relatively new band, Mike Rudd’s 1st Base, he says that he was born to be indolent. “I think I’m a natural born slacker,” he says. “I know that my grandparents would have loved me to have taken up law but I ended up at art school. And then I regressed to rock’n’roll. “It will be very similar to what we did last year for Adelaide Fringe but, hopefully, a little more fluid or should I say a little more fluent,” Mike then says of Life After Life. “And there might be a few more numbers this time as well.
“But we haven’t recorded at all with this new band,” Mike says. “And that’s been a mystery to people as well as ourselves. But I have heaps of ideas just waiting to be expanded. And, one of the first things we will do, is record a song I wrote before I’ll Be Gone.
“There was a tea company and they had this little competition for someone to write a song,” he continues. “So I wrote a “And we keep the dream alive because little song and now I’m going to go back we have songs with middle eights and to it and expand upon it, and work it up into something. stuff like that,” he announces. “And I call the show Life After Life because it’s become a running gag that yes, there is life after Spectrum,” Mike says of the band he fronted in the ‘70s who scored a massive hit with their first song, I’ll Be Gone.
1st Base is a trio consisting of Mike alongside double bass player Jeremy Alsop (pictured middle) and accordion player George Butrumlis (right) of early Black Sorrows and the long-running Zydeco Jump presenting the songs of Spectrum and more in a unique fashion.
I recall going what was then to be Spectrum’s final show back in the ’70s “That’s because Life After Life is me moving into an acoustic phase with at Thebarton Theatre and it was a piano accordion,” he whispers. “But both completely sold out show. Jeremy and George are lovely players. And it’s so lovely to play with them. I “They were heady days,” Mike, who play a nylon-string guitar and, because says he got paid $30 for appearing at Sunbury Rock Festival back in the it’s acoustic, people can actually hear the lyrics. early ’70s, recalls. “But we didn’t really know what we were doing.
Mike, who reasons that major record companies have now been out of the picture for a couple of decades but haven’t realised it yet, says his new band is yet to record although Spectrum were rather prolific.
“I’m yet to work out whether that is a good thing or not,” Mike concludes with a chuckle.

ronnie taheny live review
Die, and a stunning Cinderella. The last song presented in this first section of the show is a lovely rendition of Versailles, featuring the Taheny clan on backing vocals. After a relatively short break, Taheny returns to the stage with her band. Long-standing collaborator Jarrad Payne plays drums, Flik Freeman is back again on bass, and Lainie Jamieson takes the keyboard role. As per the uniform requirements, they are all dressed in black. Drums and bass lead us into Bite Back At You, while Taheny’s singular wit is at the forefront in That’s Jesus. Everybody sings along in Irana and the result is quite beautiful.
Live Review Ronnie Taheny The Governor Hindmarsh Saturday 3 February
Toyland is a most dynamic number, really moving across the sonic spectrum, and Taheny’s “pop song”, Babel, goes down very well. The musicianship is fabulous. It sounds like these guys have been playing the crowd, particularly for his song together for years; not surprising given Chasing The Wind. It is clear that Adelaide will be hearing a lot more from the wealth of talent possessed by each individual member. Zac Eden.

Taheny is relishing the experience. She jokes, clowns and, at times, is quite serious as she tells tales of her music, and of her career. The dialogue never strays into melancholy or sadness; this is all about celebrating a great artist and the songs she has given us, and sending her off with a bang. The set finishes on a high note, with Go putting an exclamation mark on the proceedings. A good song with a mighty fine climax. But wait, there’s more…

LIVE By Robert Dunstan Adelaide fans of American band Live were greatly disappointed when they toured the country late last year but did not include this city in their itinerary. The band have now made amends by quickly returning for what will be an exclusive Australian show at Adelaide 500 alongside Birds Of Tokyo ad local acts Young Offenders and Kitchen Witch. “We knew when we toured last year that we’d be coming back for Adelaide 500,” singer and guitarist Ed Kowalczyk tells me over the telephone from the US early one morning before admitting that it was hard to keep it a secret at times. “So we’re looking forward to coming back so quickly,” he says. Ed says he has only recently got into car racing.
“Yeah, yeah, over the last couple of years I’ve been to a few Indy races and enjoyed it,” he declares. “There’s something about being near those cars when they are doing what they do. It’s such a rush, so when we got invited to play Adelaide 500 we thought, ‘Hey, what a cool party that’s going to be’. We can check out all the cars and what else is going on during the day and then do a concert at night. How cool is that?” The band, Ed alongside lead guitarist Chad Taylor, bass player Patrick Dahlheimer, drummer Chad Gacey and touring member Zak Loy on rhythm guitar, scored muxh international success with the release of their third album, Throwing Copper, but split acrimoniously with Ed in 2009 only to make up and reform in 2016.
“And things have changed and with the way things are now with social media and digital technology, you can do all sorts of things,” Ed reasons. “We had a sevenyear break and when we came back to it, everything had changed. But it’s exciting times, especially coming from an era like we did when everyone just released albums. These days, as soon as you have done a song, you can give people a taste of it.”
Playing Adelaide 500 will allow the band The band have been recording in their to play a ‘greatest hits’ kind of show as the own studio. focus will not be on a new album. ‘We have a studio at our headquarters in “We’ve always been a band that does York, Pennsylvania, and it’s a blessing that songs that we would get into trouble for we can work there any time of the day or not playing,” Ed laughs. “But we love all night,” Ed says. “We’re having a great time of our songs and so the show there although we may move “We had a we are doing now includes to another studio and work a couple of interesting cover meeting with with a producer. “Ha, my one and only acting role,” he acknowledges with a laugh. “It was funny because I’d grown up on the east coast of the US but when Throwing Copper came out and did so well I moved to Los Angeles to get some sunshine. And a really good buddy was a film agent and I jokingly said to him over a few drinks in a bar, ‘Hey, can you get me a part in a film?’ “And he said, ‘Well, I have this script for a movie for a movie called Fight Club and I know that the director, David Fincher, is a big fan of Live’. So we had a meeting with David and he said I could play the role of a preacher. But the preacher got cut from the film so I ended up playing a waiter.”
Ed says the band are currently working on new material. “We are about seven or eight songs in but still trying to work out how to get them out there,” he says. “We are toying with the

Steve’s movie work is described here alongside his other great passion, racing (of all kinds, and often as dangerous as possible), and there’s possibly a little too much information about the friends he made in the sport, his various deathdefying adventures and some of the slightly forgotten film side projects that resulted from his pursuits. Zimmerman mentions little about 1971’s failed docudrama Le Mans but there’s a pleasant page or two chronicling the production of the same year’s On Any Sunday, as directed by the recently-late Bruce Brown, a bona fide legend in the somewhat small surf doco field.
Sections are also devoted to his friends and co-stars (Robert Vaughn was a close pal and James Coburn an admiring colleague), and Ali McGraw, who was paired with him in The Getaway and knew immediately that she would leave her husband and family for him, such was his fearsome gorgeousness. And she was right too.
The author perhaps goes too far with pages devoted to the Stetson hats McQueen favoured, the kind of desert boots he loved, the fabulously dated suits he wore in Thomas Crown and so forth, and while there are respectful insights into how he found God after his cancer diagnosis, there’s also noticeably little about some of the racier, raunchier things proper biographers have uncovered (such as Steve’s thorough enjoyment of care, there’s a little detail about Steve (of THE LIFE: STEVE MCQUEEN the swinging ’70s in all its, shall we say, course) falling into the wrong crowd and Dwight Jon Zimmerman permutations). the beat & the selecter live review
enthusiastic singing and skanking. The Beat close their show with the expected extended version of Mirror In The Bathroom, which involves some great audience participation.
The evening finally draws to an end when Black and Hendrickson are invited to join The Beat on stage for a life-affirming rendition of Enjoy Yourself, a song made popular in ska circles by Specials on their second LP. This has been a really decent night out. For these bands to come to Adelaide is almost good enough in itself; the fact that they revel in putting on great shows is both refreshing and admirable.
LIVE REVIEW The Beat And The Selecter The Governor Hindmarsh Wednesday 31 January Review and photos by David Robinson It’s another evening for this town’s ska appreciation society to savour; a doubleheader from two of the giants of the genre: The Selecter and The Beat. Despite information to the contrary, it’s The Selecter who are playing first. “Good Evening, all you lovely people from Adelaide!” Pauline Black greets the crowd with a smile and, after being pumped up at the merch table for the last little while, looks more than ready to channel her energy into the show. She promises to bring, “A heavy dose of 2 tone music’, to The Gov tonight. The evening kicks off with The Avengers Theme, a song from 2013’s String Theory album. This is followed by Three Minute Hero, which takes the audience happily back to those very early days of the English ska revival. This sets the scene for the show; a good blend of the old and the new, with a slight leaning towards the former.
Black and her partner-in-music, Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson, marshal the band and the audience through an hour of classic ska. The newer songs still carry the trademark sound of the band, something that proves a theme for the entire evening. All the classics are present: Missing Words, Danger, Train To Skaville, James Bond and On My Radio make the urge to dance impossible to resist for some. Of the more recent offerings, the slow reggae groove of Frontline and the title track of the band’s latest album, Daylight, are highlights.
The set concludes with a Carry Go Bring Home singalong, and then Too Much Pressure (which segues into Pressure Drop). After the break, The Beat hit the stage. Ranking Roger cuts a slightly different figure than the one punters probably remember from those classic clips of the early 1980s, but it is quickly evident that his voice still carries the authentic sound of the band. He admits it has “been a while”, but he’s glad to be back in town. Whine And Grine/Stand Down Margaret and Too Nice To Talk To get the crowd going again after the interval. The Beat, quite possibly more so than other bands of the era, had a distinctly unique sound. Some might say it was a sound almost impossible to recreate. It is amazing that this incarnation sounds spot on. The sax is almost perfect. Roger’s son, Ranking Junior, does a great job in the second vocalist role, and the blending of the two voices is reminiscent of The Beat in their pomp. All of the instruments are faithful to that distinctive sound that was enjoyed by thousands back in the day.
The set features another blend of old and new; after four cracking songs from the early days the band follows with a couple from the Bounce album, the group’s latest. In addition, the band also presents their take on Rock The Casbah, dedicated to the sadly-missed Joe Strummer. Roger keeps up the banter with the audience, offering lessons in the correct pronuciation of Wha’ppen, among other things. Tears Of A Clown, Save It For Later and Ranking Full Stop all come in the second half of the show, and these guaranteed audience pleasers are met with
