together, we are always concocting what we can do next as Dyson, Stringer & Cloher.
“It’s all depends on timing though and us all being in the same place at the same time and actually having the time to do something,” she sighs. “We are all pretty busy with our own solo stuff at the moment. Jen is doing very well and sold out the US tour she did.” Mia’s father, Jim Dyson (of Dyson Guitars), was a noted luthier but has since retired.
mia dyson MIA DYSON By Robert Dunstan Australia’s Mia Dyson, now based in the US, is heading home armed with a new album, If I Said Only So Far I Take It Back, for a run of shows that will include an appearance at Blenheim Music & Camping Festival before she spends the remainder of the weekend at Byron Bay’s Bluesfest. Mia, who was about to step onto a plane bound for Australia after just completing an American tour when we spoke, says she’s looking forward to playing here again. “Yeah, but I’m quite frazzled,” she laughs. “It’ll be good to be home although I do land and go straight from the airport to Triple R in Melbourne to do a live to air. But I’ve got my American band with me for the first time so I’m really excited about that. And it’ll be great getting back to Bluesfest again. It’s been a long time. And I’ve never played Blenheimfest before so I’m looking forward to that. Mia’s American band is drummer Erin ‘Sid’ Sydney and Daniel Wright on bass with the former producing her new album at Portside Sound in the Muscle Shoals building alongside Alabama Shakes’ keyboardist Ben Tanner. “I haven’t listened to the album since we made it – I’m not one to listen to my own

“But because I was younger than some of the guys doing the ‘new’ music and had a bit of punk in me but loved old blues and soul, I fell right in the middle,” he laughs. “But, y’know, I think there is an edge in my voice that would not have happened if I hadn’t come from that period when punk exploded.”
john waite JOHN WAITE By Robert Dunstan It seems like it has been a long wait, but John Waite, who came to fame in the late ’70s as the bass player and lead singer with The Babys which led to so much more, is coming to town for his 40th anniversary tour after a scheduled visit last year had to be shelved.
John, who enjoyed as stint with Sir Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band in 2003, was born in Lancaster and played with a local band before moving to London.
After the demise of The Babys, John put together a super group of sorts as Bad English featured himself alongside Jonathan Cain (the writer of the song Working Class Man which became an anthem for Adelaide’s Jimmy Barnes) and Neal Schon of Journey.
‘What had happened was that after The Babys I decided to go solo,” John explains. “I had four solo “Yeah, I played with a band “I’d heard albums out that had been there and then moved to nothing but huge successes but then found London to play in a threegreat things I was running out of gas. I got piece jazz rock band,” he about her and sick of it all being about me reveals. “And then I quit checked out and having to keep talking them and moved back her YouTube myself up – ha, and here I am to Lancaster and, the doing it now – and I got sick stuff thought of writing songs by myself and week I got back with no prospects, I got an offer she was making solo records. to join an American band outstanding. He has already repacked his bags from Cleveland. So I can’t and is now looking forward to “But my manager had heading down under with his band wait to meet arranged a meeting with a for a show that will feature his many “So I went over there for guy from Epic Records about Sarah.” four months and then it worldwide hits – Missing You from a deal for a new solo album,” his solo career hit number one in the all exploded – all great fun he continues. “And he said, basically, US – performed either in acoustic or though – so I moved back to London I couldn’t write songs. So I thought, electric mode depending on the vibe and joined The Babys,” he adds. “Oh ‘Well, that’s it for me. Goodnight yeah, I was also at art school for on the night. Vienna’. And then my manager and four years so I’ve always been kinda me went for a drink and I came up “Oh, it’s been one of those days,” John plugged into the arts.” with this idea. laughs when we are connected by The Babys – originally a joke name phone to his home in Santa Monica “I said to him, “Why don’t I try and until they thought of a better one and ask how he’s faring. put a band together and look at - had formed in 1974 but it wasn’t doing it that way?’, so my manager until 1977 they had success – with “I bought a new guitar [a Martin went back to Epic with the idea and the song Isn’t It Time doing big D-18] the other day so I spent this they thought it could be interesting. morning looking for a case for it and business – which also coincided Next thing you know, we’ve got Bad with the punk era. then I had to go to the dentist and English. then drop into the dry-cleaners,” he announces. “It was supposed to be a “It was weird times,” John says. “And, in the beginning, it really day off and now I’m back home doing “Because there were acts like clicked,” he says. “It took a couple of Golden Earring – a band I love – all these [telephone] interviews for months to get it all together, another and Neil Young and suddenly, out the Australian tour. But it’s been couple of months to work the songs of nowhere, you had Sex Pistols. good – I’ve been enjoying doing up and then we came out swingin’ So there was an immediate divide them.” and everything was rosy.”
The band had immediate success with their self-titled debut which yielded three top 10 singles in the US, including Forget Me Not, but their second offering, the ironically titled Backlash, sank without trace.
“There was a lot of personal conflict and it wasn’t much fun making Backlash,” John admits. “We had to go back into the studio when we weren’t ready because we’d just come off a year-long tour for the first album and we were knackered – and I mean totally knackered with a capital ‘K’. “I remember sitting around in my house in Pound Ridge [New York] with a cellar full of wine just watching the snow fall outside and watching TV and the phone wouldn’t stop ringing,” he recalls. “It’d be the band or the record company saying, ‘You really have to come in and make another record’, and I just wasn’t ready and not very into it. But I gave it a try. “And then we had fights in the studio with the producer – it was mainly me fighting the producer – because, while I thought we had two thirds of a pretty good record, he didn’t like anything we’d written,” John sighs. “So that kinda stopped everything in its tracks. And then I basically told him to go fuck himself and walked out. I was pretty pissed off.”
I wouldn’t even bother touring,” John says. “Doing it that way keeps it really exciting. And we throw in a couple of covers as well – we do a Dylan cover most nights. Anything “Ah, fantastic,” John laughs. “It sounds can happen.” like Sarah and I will get on like a Backlash still saw a release but it did house on fire.” spell the end of Bad English who had John Waite will be playing the called themselves so because it was John concludes by expanding further Governor Hindmarsh, 59 Port often pointed out that The Babys was on how his live shows work. Rd, Hindmarsh, on Thursday bad English due to its misspelling. Adelaide’s Sarah McLeod, of The Superjesus, will be touring around the county with John. “I’d heard nothing but great things about her and checked out her YouTube stuff thought she was outstanding,” John responds. “So I can’t wait to meet Sarah. With someone like that, with that amount of talent, I’m just proud to be on the same stage as her. So I couldn’t be happier to be touring with her.”
I mention that Sarah is prone to get on Facebook late at night and, armed with a glass or two of wine, go ‘live’ much to everyone’s amusement.
“We usually kick off by doing three or four songs with the full band as full on electric versions and then we’ll do a few acoustic, unplugged songs,” he says. “And then we’ll go back to electric. But it’s now become so fluid that some songs get the electric treatment one night and then we do them acoustically the next night. So it’s quite spontaneous and the audience can get quite involved. “And it’s a lot of fun and, y’know, if I couldn’t mix up the acoustic parts with the full on electric stuff,

Currently there is a tribute album out for James Blundell and Henry is singing on the title track, Pride. Henry explains that he has always had an affinity with singing perhaps more than with playing guitar, although his musical passions were inculcated in primary school by a visiting guitar teacher.

“And I was always singing too. I used to sing a lot,” thinks Henry. “I think I’m more a natural singer. I used to get picked as the lead in the choirs and all that but I didn’t try, a lot of my friends used to make fun of me, but I always used to get picked for it. But I had fun with it, it was kinda cool. I always just loved it. A magical world.”

ZELORAGE By Robert Dunstan
“We are very similar to ’90s-inspired heavy rock and nu-metal. Huge riffs and drums with bass lines that bring everything together. I personally think our music hits a broad range of emotions. We fit in the metal category, but we definitely aren’t your typical full on, flat-out metal.”
Zelorage (photographed here by Samuel Phillips Photograpy) hail from Renmark but the band relish any opportunity to travel down and play a show in Adelaide and such will be the case when they venture to the big smoke once again.
“We all went to high school together. We lived next door to each other about 10kms out of town, but we didn’t even know each other or become a band until we hit high school.” What were the band’s early musical influences and how have these changed over time?
zerorage
On this occassion it will be to play as one of three local opening acts – the others being Surviving Sharks and Favour The Brave – on American rock band (hed) p.e.’s national tour which will mark the second time Zelorage have hit the same stage on the same night as the overseas act. We contacted the band’s drummer, Mark Polst, and asked how Zelorage would
How did Zelorage – Mark alongside Sam on vocals and guitar and Rowan on bass – get together?
“Early influences ranged from Silverchair to Sunk Loto, Korn, Coal Chamber, Staind, Sevendust. All that ’90s goodness. I think not much has changed. The original influences are still my favourites but it seems we have picked up a few newer style bands and artists along the way.” Where have you performed in the past and with what bands?
“We’ve performed all over Australia apart from WA and Tasmania. Previously supported Sevendust and Drowning Pool at the Gov, (hed) p.e. at the Prince Bandroom in Melbourne and every regional town or city you can think of in SA and Victoria.” What’s been the most memorable gig you’ve played so far and why? “Being the main support for Sevendust’s Adelaide show! It was sold out and I got to meet one of my drumming heroes [Morgan Rose] who inspired me to be a drummer.” Where are you up to recording-wise?
“We have three full length albums out. And now a single, When You Turn, and a fourth full-length album towards the end of 2018.” Future plans for you guys? “A few single releases in 2018 followed by the album and hopefully a lot more touring and great support slots!”
Zelorage will play Fowler’s Live, 68 North Tce, Adelaide, on Friday 23 March alongside US act (hed) p.e., Surviving Sharks, and Favour The Brave with tickets via Moshtix.

Eric has chosen to launch Whiskey Man on the lawns of the National Wine Centre during the afternoon. “It’s my first launch so I wanted to do something a bit special,” he reasons. “I didn’t want to do it at any old place and didn’t want to do it on a Friday or Saturday night either. I wanted something a bit more relaxed so an afternoon show where people can sit on the lawns and enjoy a nice glass of wine – or a beer – was the way to go.
ERIC SANTUCCI By Robert Dunstan Eric Santucci, known simply as ‘Tooch’ to his many friends, is the trumpet player with long-running Adelaide swing band Lucky Seven but is about to launch his debut solo album, Whiskey Man, which takes the musician and singer into a new musical territory as the offering exudes a soulful, downhome, alternative country feel.
Mixmasters Studios and locked that in so that I had a definite date and a deadline to work to finish off the songs,” he says. “I knew that if I didn’t book anything in I would just faffle around and not get anything done. “So I went up to Mixmasters for five nights in July of 2017 and stayed overnight up there the whole time,” Eric continues. “And I also roped in all my best mates to play on it. Damien Steele Scott produced it and he also played bass and acoustic guitar. And that was great having Damien there because he’s maybe one of the few people in Adelaide who understands that Nashville country sound I was going for.
The musician, who also fronts Proton Pill at North Adelaide’s Lion Hotel every Wednesday evening, has handpicked a huge number of local acts – Wanderers, Zkye Blue, Alison Coppe & The Janes, Stefan Hauk, Alana Jagt “I didn’t want to and The Bitter Darlings – to provide other entertainment at do it at any old the launch.

‘I thought it would be great for people to come along, relax on the lawns and hear some great music throughout the whole afternoon,” Eric adds.
“And the finished vinyl came back just the other day in time for the launch,” Eric says. “So that was a relief although I’d had a test pressing for a while now. It’s good to have Whiskey Man out on vinyl because it’s the first thing I’ve ever done – I’ve never
“They are all good friends basically, but because I am often doing gigs myself, it’s not often I get to see any of them play,” Eric laughs. “So I thought it would be a great way of getting to see them all play for a change. And they are all great acts with a focus on original music.”
Eric ‘Tooch’ Santucci will launch his debut album, Whiskey Man, with a concert in the courtyard of North Tce’s National Wine Centre from 1.30pm on Sunday 25 March with Wanderers, Zkye Blue, Alison Coppe & The Janes, Stefan Hauk, Alana Jagt and The Bitter Darlings. seriously Kitty-esque, and it’s hard not to hear her snarky signature voice reading it aloud in your head.
BRIDGE BURNING & OTHER HOBBIES Kitty Flanagan (Allen & Unwin) 2018, 258pp, $29.99 Australian comic, actress, TV wit and regular visitor to the Adelaide Fringe (of course), Kitty specifies early on in this collection of reminisces that what we’ve just begun reading isn’t really a strict autobiography, and she’s right, as she bounces around discussing some of her favourite pet subjects in only vaguely chronological order. There are sections about oftenunsupervised growing up in the ‘70s, a few chapters about her aimless 20s and not quite enough about how exactly she fell into stand-up comedy, and an awful lot about her many and various failed
relationships, which even she says she finds a bit much.
With intriguingly-titled chapters and sub-headings, particular highlights here include: ‘When I Was Young And Other Clichés’, with such offerings as ‘The Vardy Party’ and ‘Yoga Guantanamo’; ‘Hitch-Hiking, Older Men And Other Bad Decisions’, which features ‘How Am I Not Dead?’ (a familiar question we all wind up asking ourselves) and the illuminating ‘Bridge-Burning In Singapore’; ‘The Gravedigger’s Wife, The Stoner’s Prostitute And Other Failed Romances’, where you’ll be drawn in by such titles as ‘A Bit Of A Dick’ and ‘I Love A Bidet’; and, finally, ‘Put Less On Your Fork, Don’t Park Across Driveways And Other Things I Have Learned’, where she sums everything up, sort of, and gets surprisingly mature and reflective. No, really.
The sort of agreeably rambling tome that (like similar works by Wil Anderson, for example) feels like a series of expanded monologues from past and future stage shows, this pretty pleasing romp is
And you can’t help but wonder if there will be a sequel? Bridge-Burning 2: Bridge Harder? Bridge-Burning Over Troubled Water? Or even, perhaps, the posthumously-published The End Of Bridge-Burning: Goodbye Kitty?

“I think we were last over in October,” Tom says. “And we love Adelaide because you have such a great scene with bands like Thrashboard, All In, The Lizards and all the rest. Meatbeaters and The Pro-Tools too. But it’s always been a great scene over there going back to the days of The Bearded Clams and The Mark Of Cain. And then you’ve got bands like Young Offenders and others who are world class. We just love coming over to play with bands like that.”

WOLFPACK By Robert Dunstan
Melbourne punks Wolfpack enjoy a strong and loyal following in Adelaide so the three-piece are delighted to be returning to town as special guest of revered American band Suicidal Tendencies that will also have The Lizards rounding out the bill. BSide Magazine jumped on the blower to Wolfpack’s Drum Wolf (guitarist and singer Tom Brownrigg) and began by asking how the Adelaide trip with the Americans came about. Tom, who announces that the band went to see Gogol Bordello in Melbourne recently and have just started work on what will be Wolfpack’s fifth EP which will also mark their first vinyl offering, says they had heard rumours about Suicidal Tendencies hitting Australia.
“We’d heard from friends in the US who know the band about the tour so got onto them and they were like, ‘What? The Australian tour hasn’t even been announced yet’. So I think they knew we were keen.” Wolfpack have an interesting ethos as, while many other musicians cry poor, they give all profits to charity and run as a not-for profit entity and cut costs by crashing with friends in each state. “I’ll likely get shot down in flames for saying this but I think it’s privilege
Joining Wolfpack at their Adelaide show with Suicidal Tendencies will be local legends The Lizards who recently played a gig with 15-year old Kyle behind the kit due to regular drummer Marty being on maternity leave.
“Hey, I was at that gig,” Tom enthuses. “It was with Stiff Little Fingers at the Gov – how could I not come over from Melbourne for that? - and Kyle was great. He was doing The Ramones-style hi-hat – y’know, smashing the sixteenths on the hi-hat – and I wasn’t even playing drums when I was that age. So I can’t imagine how well Kyle is going to do if he continues on drums.”
to be a musician and play in front of people,” Tom suggests. “And I don’t think it’s something you should expect to get paid for all the time. Musicians are not special just because they have written a few songs. And we get all our negatives out on stage and turn that into a positive as a community thing. And, at “He was doing the end of the day, we’ve made some money for charity. I don’t think any of us have any annual leave left. At the same time, our bosses all know that we are doing what we do for charity and respect that. They can see the passion we have.” Wolfpack often make their way over to Adelaide where they have made many friends.

Daniel Sloss @ Fowlers Live Live Review by I. C. T. Messenger Scottish comedian and writer Daniel Sloss performed at the tail end of the Adelaide Fringe recently and was ironically well received by an audience he tried to morally and psychologically destroy.
What that element is one would be a fool to attempt to encapsulate in words, but the visceral and grinding electric guitars creating a mad ocean upon which the vocals float like a gothic prince who has somehow accidentally arrived into this shitfest – might be a ridiculous attempt in understanding what it is about BRMC. Their old songs were played to the crowd’s delight, and new material with its country dirt and bandsaw electric tones didn’t lose the crowd. The BRMC are not even afraid to pull out the harmonica, but when the entire audience is wearing your same black leather jacket you could pull out a tin whistle and do a Riverdance whist also reciting a poem you wrote about how much you love your mother, or maybe not. Asking the audience to secretly write a list of one hundred people knowing that everyone on that name would die, your revolt turns into a conspiring mind as the names of current despots of the world spring to mind.
Another mind game, a complex one, about a funeral and a woman meeting a man there, was unanswerable by the entire audience. Expect for one poor lass who triumphantly could answer the riddle, but then to understand that only a fellow sociopath could work something like that out. I think the rest of us sighed in relief, and were happy to be named immature and emotional.
