The OzSkas have had some of their recordings feature on releases by UK ska label Specialized as part of an an-going series. “We did a version of Rude Boy when they put out a Bob Marley tribute, One Heart, and we also did a version of The Jam’s Takin’ My Love for a Jam tribute they’ve done,” Marty says. “And we are going to be releasing that ourselves over the next week or so as a single.
the ozskas THE OZSKAS By Robert Dunstan Sydney-based combo The OzSkas will be making their way to Adelaide this weekend to present their ska, reggae and rocksteady grooves at Kustom Kulture SA’s 16th annual Kustom Kulture Weekender at Plympton’s The Highway. BSide Magazine got on the blower to the band – Carol ‘Caz’ Bernhard on vocals, Marty Fabok on guitar, Perry Andronos on bass, Simon Wale behind the kit, Al Scott on keyboards and vocals with Jam Man on SFX – while they were gathered together for practice and began by asking how the invitation to present their wares in Adelaide had come about. “We did a project last year for Specialized, a UK label that puts out ska compilations for charity, and due to that, and in connection with Adelaide’s Fistful Of Trojans and a Specialized show with them in Sydney, we got to hear about Kustom Kulture,” Marty begins. “And I’m really looking forward to it as it will be my first time in Adelaide,” Caz then enthuses. “And it’s the same for Al although the others have all been before in other bands.” Marty and Perry are already familiar with Kustom Kulture in Adelaide as their former band, Sydney ska exponents The Allniters – who scored a national hit in 1983 with a lively cover of Bobby Bloom’s Montego Bay
–have performed at the weekender in the past.
“And we are in the middle of recording a song for the next Specialized project,” he continues. ‘That’s going to be a tribute to Trojan Records so we are doing our version of Prince Buster’s Take It Easy. Prince Buster’s version wasn’t an actual Trojan release but the very original one [by Hopeton Lewis] was.”
“We are also recording a couple of our original songs too,” Marty then adds. The band’s live performances feature their originals alongside some obscure ska songs.

Caz’s background is of interest as she grew up in Sydney and then found herself in Canberra.
“I started late,” she says. “I’d moved to Canberra and started a duo called Damage Control and then had an all-girl band called The Baby Shakers. And then I moved back to Sydney and joined a punk band
of years in a band called Colourblind [not the local group currently playing under that name],” Sean says. “They toured a lot and recorded in places such as Melbourne’s Sing Sing and I met her through playing in bands that were on the same bill.
sean Kemp SEAN KEMP By Robert Dunstan Sean Kemp is well-known and respected in Adelaide music circles as the drummer has played with many bands over the last couple of decades and is currently singer and drummer with alternative rock band Surviving Sharks and is also working behind the kit with Jessica & The Beating Hearts.
“We struck up a bit of friendship but drifted apart when our respective bands split up,” he says. “But then we started doing a bit of collaboration around the time I first started to learn to play guitar. But that all stopped when I got really busy drumming in bands as well as doing a bit of session work.

“And she’s been a Godsend with my lyric writing and what I am trying to say,” he says. “She’ll look at my lyrics with a puzzled look and then say, ‘Sean, what exactly is it you trying to say with this song?’ And then we work on it. It might be a song about friendship, or one about mental health, or love, or loss.

“So, yeah, plenty of people ask but they are hardened fans so it’s nothing substantial to base a big tour around,” Jamie adds. “We are all still in touch with each other though which is a start.”
JAMIE HUTCHINGS By Robert Dunstan Sydney’s Jamie Hutchings, who first made himself known in the ’90s with alternative rock band Bluebottle Kiss, has just released his sixth solo album, Bedsit, and is taking it around the country with Reuben Wills on double bass for an extensive tour that will include a stop in Adelaide.

“It’s a property about 14 kilometres from Bathurst that a friend of mine is taking care of,” Jamie says. “It’s his late father’s farm so he’s kind of the caretaker now and there’s a big old shearing shed on the property that he’s turned into an artist space. He’s a visual artist himself and paints there, but he also lends it out to people as a recording studio. “So I’ve recorded albums there before with

We used six microphones and recorded everything live – the double bass and guitar. I then did some overdubs – such as my sister playing piano – when I got back home to Sydney.” Bedsit has already been issued on vinyl.
“It really lends itself to that format because it has such a vintage sound,” Jamie says. “I felt Bedsit was the kind of record that should be out on vinyl. It’s kind of sequenced that way as well because there are four songs on side one

“Yeah, so that will be Infinity Broke and another band I play with called The Tall Grass – that’s my collaboration with Peter Fenton from Crow – as well as something with a friend of mine, Mark Moldre, who I produce and arrange for. “So once this Bedsit tour is done, we’ll have to start some serious preparation for all that,” Jamie concludes with a laugh.

These shows have come about due to the huge success of similar roots and blues events held at Prospect Town Hall last
year in association with Adelaide Guitar Festival’s Guitars In Bars initiative.

VALE JOHNNY JUMPER The Adelaide music community and beyond was rocked and shocked recently to learn that John Hilliard (AKA Johnny Jumper) had suddenly passed away. Johnny led legendary Adelaide ska band The Jumpers before going on to join rockabilly combo Milky Bar Kids who signed to Sydney label Regular Records and enjoyed a hit of sorts with a cover of an Elvis Presley song, Flaming Star. Johnny was spotted enjoying a day at WOMADelaide and his sudden passing

ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL The world’s largest cabaret festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, is back from Friday 8 June until Saturday 23 June at Adelaide Festival Centre and will feature more than 330 artists from five counties (including 280 Australians and 116 South Australians) in 52 performances. This year’s festival presents 16 world, 10 Australian, and 11 Adelaide premieres as well as 10 exclusives and three original shows commissioned or co-commissioned by Adelaide Festival Centre’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival. With this year’s theme of ‘EYES OPEN’, audiences should prepare for a diverse program of music, comedy and cabaret. Adelaide Cabaret Festival artistic director Ali McGregor: “I wanted to capture the sense of change in the world at the moment and how cabaret is, and always has been, at the forefront of telling the stories of change, reckoning, futility, and fun. I am so proud that we have such a diverse and international cross section of the very best that the cabaret genre has to offer. “I’m personally involved in the debut of my new show about Yma Sumac, directing a line-up of my some of my favourite variety, burlesque and circus acts in Glorious Misfits, and a show celebrating the work of Tom Waits with Charly Zastrau returning to musically direct. Artistic director Ali McGregor will display her extraordinary vocals when she transforms into 1950s Peruvian songbird and Hollywood darling Yma Sumac. She will also reembrace her circus days with a selection of mischievous burlesque acts for modern-day vaudeville sensation, Glorious Misfits. IT WAS A GOOD GOOD FRIDAY By Robert Dunstan When award winning Waymouth St hotel the Grace Emily announced that, due to a change in the liquor licensing laws, they would be opening the doors for the very first time in its long and lengthy history on Good Friday, there was much rejoicing throughout the land – well, at least in Adelaide and surrounds. Armed with this information, it took local person about town Evan Williams less than a minute to figure out that if he were to arrive at the pub when it opened, he could order a Coopers Dark Ale and go down in the history books as the first person in the known universe to buy a drink at the Grace Emily on a Good Friday. Thus, he arrived at the popular pub well before it was due to open and plonked himself out the front in his easy chair and proceeded to count down the hours.
Then, having helped carry out the pubs ‘No Pokies No TAB’ sign, he marched up to the bar and ordered a pint of the good stuff therefore going down forever in the annals of history, Well played sir.
