called Eager Thirteen. And then I met The Ozskas.”

The OzSkas have had some of their recordings feature on releases by UK ska label Specialized as part of an an-going series. “We did a version of Rude Boy when they put out a Bob Marley tribute, One Heart, and we also did a version of The Jam’s Takin’ My Love for a Jam tribute they’ve done,” Marty says. “And we are going to be releasing that ourselves over the next week or so as a single.

the ozskas THE OZSKAS By Robert Dunstan Sydney-based combo The OzSkas will be making their way to Adelaide this weekend to present their ska, reggae and rocksteady grooves at Kustom Kulture SA’s 16th annual Kustom Kulture Weekender at Plympton’s The Highway. BSide Magazine got on the blower to the band – Carol ‘Caz’ Bernhard on vocals, Marty Fabok on guitar, Perry Andronos on bass, Simon Wale behind the kit, Al Scott on keyboards and vocals with Jam Man on SFX – while they were gathered together for practice and began by asking how the invitation to present their wares in Adelaide had come about. “We did a project last year for Specialized, a UK label that puts out ska compilations for charity, and due to that, and in connection with Adelaide’s Fistful Of Trojans and a Specialized show with them in Sydney, we got to hear about Kustom Kulture,” Marty begins. “And I’m really looking forward to it as it will be my first time in Adelaide,” Caz then enthuses. “And it’s the same for Al although the others have all been before in other bands.” Marty and Perry are already familiar with Kustom Kulture in Adelaide as their former band, Sydney ska exponents The Allniters – who scored a national hit in 1983 with a lively cover of Bobby Bloom’s Montego Bay

–have performed at the weekender in the past.

“And we are in the middle of recording a song for the next Specialized project,” he continues. ‘That’s going to be a tribute to Trojan Records so we are doing our version of Prince Buster’s Take It Easy. Prince Buster’s version wasn’t an actual Trojan release but the very original one [by Hopeton Lewis] was.”

“We are also recording a couple of our original songs too,” Marty then adds. The band’s live performances feature their originals alongside some obscure ska songs.

The OzSkas have been plying their musical “But we put our own slant on any covers we wares for almost a decade and along the way have landed many support slots with throw in,” Marty says. “They sound like fresh new songs.” visiting international ska acts. “Yeah, it’s been about 10 years now although we’ve had a few line-up changes because some previous members were misbehaving too much,” Marty laughs. “But, about four years ago, we settled on the current line-up and it’s been solid ever since. The current line-up is very well-behaved although there is still a lot of good energy.

“There are “And there are such a lot of those great such a lot of old ska songs out there,” Caz reasons. “So it’s a lot of fun to take something those great old old and make it sound fresh and new.” ska songs out there. It was quite devastating.” I thought Marty was possibly joking until Caz elaborated further.

Caz’s background is of interest as she grew up in Sydney and then found herself in Canberra.

“I started late,” she says. “I’d moved to Canberra and started a duo called Damage Control and then had an all-girl band called The Baby Shakers. And then I moved back to Sydney and joined a punk band

of years in a band called Colourblind [not the local group currently playing under that name],” Sean says. “They toured a lot and recorded in places such as Melbourne’s Sing Sing and I met her through playing in bands that were on the same bill.

sean Kemp SEAN KEMP By Robert Dunstan Sean Kemp is well-known and respected in Adelaide music circles as the drummer has played with many bands over the last couple of decades and is currently singer and drummer with alternative rock band Surviving Sharks and is also working behind the kit with Jessica & The Beating Hearts.

“We struck up a bit of friendship but drifted apart when our respective bands split up,” he says. “But then we started doing a bit of collaboration around the time I first started to learn to play guitar. But that all stopped when I got really busy drumming in bands as well as doing a bit of session work.

“I completely let go of singing and playing guitar and that was around “It was finished last year and I the time I also started to have some had given them a copy to play last mental health issues and almost had a December,” Sean says. “And now, complete breakdown,” Sean candidly with the launch coming up, they’ve reveals. “I was often drumming and been playing it a bit more. So I’m playing around the place but, mentally, more than thankful for that and the I was quite unwell. I had to have support that Three D have given me. therapy.”

“And one of my songs ended up on the station’s most recent Depth Charge compilation CD,” he continues with a laugh. ‘Funny thing is, it’s not a song that is on the EP. It was one I gave to them ages ago called Break Up, a song about an experience I had that I had completely forgotten about.

Sean is quite open about talking about his past mental health issues.

In recent times however, he has taught himself to play guitar and has embarked on a solo career – aided and abetted by Kirsten Glover and Sean’s brother Drew – that has led to “I also sent a copy of the the trio scoring a number of highEP to triple j and the profile support slots at such venues as song Many Roads got Her Majesty’s Theatre, the Governor played by them,” Hindmarsh Hotel and “I’ll show Drew Sean announces. For his solo shows, Sean is invariably joined on stage by his brother, Drew, and Kirsten Glover.

“Kirsten is from the country and she came to town and spent a lot

“I think it’s important to talk about it because basically, I had hit a brick

wall and needed help,” he says. “I now want to help people going through a similar thing and some of my songs are about that recovery process. “I had to pick myself back up again,” Sean says with a reflective sigh. “And I remember at my last session, the therapist asked what I was going to do next and I laughed and said, ‘Well, I’m about to head down to the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel and open for Hot Chocolate in front of about 800 people’. And she said, ‘Well, make that the start of your new way forward. Music is something you can latch onto and it’s a positive in your life’. “And that’s the time Kirsten came back into my life because she had seen me at my very lowest and was always encouraging me. I was very foggy for a while there – it’s almost like walking around a room in the dark not knowing where you are going and thinking there’s a wall in front of you – but she helped me focus. Kirsten lit the candle while I was in the dark.

“And she’s been a Godsend with my lyric writing and what I am trying to say,” he says. “She’ll look at my lyrics with a puzzled look and then say, ‘Sean, what exactly is it you trying to say with this song?’ And then we work on it. It might be a song about friendship, or one about mental health, or love, or loss.

and five on side two. But I only did a very limited pressing and have now sold half of them but will be taking copies out on tour with me.” Many bands from the ’90s have been reforming for anniversary tours but Jamie says that nothing of that nature is planned for Bluebottle Kiss. “We get asked a lot by fans but that’s about it,” he laughs. “We last played in 2007. That was for two nights and we were unsure at the time if we’d continue with it. It turned out we didn’t. We also recorded those two nights with the idea of putting out a live album but that never happened either after the record company folded.

“So, yeah, plenty of people ask but they are hardened fans so it’s nothing substantial to base a big tour around,” Jamie adds. “We are all still in touch with each other though which is a start.”

JAMIE HUTCHINGS By Robert Dunstan Sydney’s Jamie Hutchings, who first made himself known in the ’90s with alternative rock band Bluebottle Kiss, has just released his sixth solo album, Bedsit, and is taking it around the country with Reuben Wills on double bass for an extensive tour that will include a stop in Adelaide.

Following his album launch tour, Jamie will a band I sing and play with called Infinity spend time working on the next Infinity Broke album. “I’d always wanted to do something that was pretty stark,” Jamie declares. “Saying that, it “Yeah, I start over in Perth and kinda go always depends on how the songs turn from there,” Jamie says. “And it’s always out but with this one the songs I was great to get back to the Grace Emily in Adelaide because it’s such a nice place. And, writing seemed to be the right ones to do that. I felt they leant themselves to doing yeah, I’ll have Reuben with me – he played on the album – for everywhere except Perth. something really minimalist. ‘So the shows will be guitar and double bass because that’s the core of the Bedsit album,” he continues. “It’s really minimal – there’s no drums or anything – so we’ve been rehearsing that way and it’s sounding really good.” Bedsit was recorded on a farm outside of Bathurst, NSW.

“It’s a property about 14 kilometres from Bathurst that a friend of mine is taking care of,” Jamie says. “It’s his late father’s farm so he’s kind of the caretaker now and there’s a big old shearing shed on the property that he’s turned into an artist space. He’s a visual artist himself and paints there, but he also lends it out to people as a recording studio. “So I’ve recorded albums there before with

“It was also recorded in a very oldfashioned way and while I usually record everything on tape, the guy who has engineered my other albums reckoned I could do this one myself,” he continues. “He just gave me some mentoring over the phone. We used six microphones and recorded everything live – the double bass and guitar. I then did some overdubs – such as my sister playing piano – when I got back home to Sydney.” Bedsit has already been issued on vinyl.

“It really lends itself to that format because it has such a vintage sound,” Jamie says. “I felt Bedsit was the kind of record that should be out on vinyl. It’s kind of sequenced that way as well because there are four songs on side one

Infinity Broke has also been asked to participate in a festival in France in July as the band enjoy a strong following in that region.

“Yeah, so that will be Infinity Broke and another band I play with called The Tall Grass – that’s my collaboration with Peter Fenton from Crow – as well as something with a friend of mine, Mark Moldre, who I produce and arrange for. “So once this Bedsit tour is done, we’ll have to start some serious preparation for all that,” Jamie concludes with a laugh.

Jamie Hutchings will be launching Bedsit at the Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth St, Adelaide, on Saturday 14 April with Alana Jagt as special guest.

“I had skin cancer when I was only 13 years old,” Lachy recently wrote. “It was terrifying. I came out of the shower with my towel around my waist when my mother spotted a TINY JET BLACK mole she hadn’t noticed before. THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE (M) ***1/2 Writer, director and producer Aki Kaurismäki’s last feature Le Havre (unusually shot in France and not his beloved Finland) suggested an interest in ongoing humanitarian crises (unlike his dark character studies Drifting Clouds and The Man Without A Past, and his beloved work with the Leningrad Cowboys), and his latest continues and expands upon these themes with grace, compassion and more than a dash of that distinctive, admittedly fairly weird Kaurismäki-esque comedy.

With what promises to be a diverse line up on these succeeding Friday nights punters will be in for a nice dose of sonic surprise. BSide Magazine talked to the ever-charming Romana Ashton who fronts The Sunday Reeds last Tuesday night as she sipped not upon the nectar of the gods but by her own admission a very cheap bottle of plonk. On the second Friday of the Grace residency some readers may find it altogether too much a gamble with fate to leave their house let alone enter a public house. Friday 13 April will be bringing Wild Rocket and Green Circles along as support, and ol’ mate Penny from Wild Rocket assures us that it’s actually a good date, something about feminine power. An article has actually been written about it, by a person.

The Sunday Reeds will be taking over the Friday night residency at the Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth Street, Adelaide, throughout April. Supports as follows: April 6 will be This Way North from Melbourne, and Moulting Vultures; April 13 will be Wild Rocket and Green Circles; April 20 will be Belafontes from Melbourne and punk legends Pro Tools; and finishing off the Friday nights of April on the 27th is Subtract S and Melbourne’s underground gurus who are so underground they are digging a hole back to us from Kazakhstan – Primitive Calculators.

VALE JOHNNY JUMPER The Adelaide music community and beyond was rocked and shocked recently to learn that John Hilliard (AKA Johnny Jumper) had suddenly passed away. Johnny led legendary Adelaide ska band The Jumpers before going on to join rockabilly combo Milky Bar Kids who signed to Sydney label Regular Records and enjoyed a hit of sorts with a cover of an Elvis Presley song, Flaming Star. Johnny was spotted enjoying a day at WOMADelaide and his sudden passing

Our dear pal Johnny Jumper. A private funeral for Johnny was held recently but as family and close friends are aware that many others would wish to pay tribute, a memorial afternoon is to be held in his honour from 12.30pm on Saturday 7 April.

Tiddas reunite to play treasures from their long lost album Dancing with My Spirit.

A record number of performers with Adelaide connections have their own shows including Mark Holden who draws on his family’s travelling circus history and his Countdown and Australian Idol days in Mark Holden’s Greatest Show on Earth. Other stars with South Australian links are Libby O’Donovan, Joanne Hartstone, Carla Lippis, Cameron Goodall, Tom Flanagan, Johanna Allen, Michaela Burger and Adelaide’s favourite German, Hans.

Artists channelling classic icons include Amber Martin (Janis Joplin in Janis: Undead), Matthew Floyd Jones of Frisky and Mannish (Richard Carpenter Is Closer to You), Queenie van de Zandt (Blue: The Songs of Joni Mitchell), award-winning actress Jane Clifton of Prisoner fame (Linda Ronstadt in Rock Venus), and Mikelangelo (Balkan Elvis in Eastern Bloc Rock and Tom Waits For No Man). Andrew O’Keefe “shouts” Johnny O’Keefe in a world premiere performance intertwining his own experiences with his uncle’s legendary stories. Comedic cabaret artists are a highlight this year. Australian comedian Lawrence Leung invites curious adventurers to step into his dubious, hilarious laboratory of Very Strange Things and Em Rusciano will perform with an 18-piece band for the first time in Difficult Woman.

ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL The world’s largest cabaret festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, is back from Friday 8 June until Saturday 23 June at Adelaide Festival Centre and will feature more than 330 artists from five counties (including 280 Australians and 116 South Australians) in 52 performances. This year’s festival presents 16 world, 10 Australian, and 11 Adelaide premieres as well as 10 exclusives and three original shows commissioned or co-commissioned by Adelaide Festival Centre’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival. With this year’s theme of ‘EYES OPEN’, audiences should prepare for a diverse program of music, comedy and cabaret. Adelaide Cabaret Festival artistic director Ali McGregor: “I wanted to capture the sense of change in the world at the moment and how cabaret is, and always has been, at the forefront of telling the stories of change, reckoning, futility, and fun. I am so proud that we have such a diverse and international cross section of the very best that the cabaret genre has to offer. “I’m personally involved in the debut of my new show about Yma Sumac, directing a line-up of my some of my favourite variety, burlesque and circus acts in Glorious Misfits, and a show celebrating the work of Tom Waits with Charly Zastrau returning to musically direct. Plus, of course keep your eyes peeled for our cabaret dinner and the ever-popular opening, closing and (my favourite) family galas!”

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and artistic director, Douglas Gautier, echoes Ali’s sentiments.

“Adelaide Festival Centre looks forward to delivering Ali McGregor’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival program. This year all festival events are back under one roof at the Festival Centre and with our brand new Walk Of Fame, foyers, bars and cafes open, we are ready to welcome some of the world’s greatest cabaret artists and the audiences that love them.’’ Festival headliners include Broadway royalty and two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone in Don’t Monkey With Broadway and Tony Award winning and Golden Globe nominated co-creator of Hedwig & The Angry Inch, John Cameron Mitchell.

For one night only, The Cat Empire and a special guest line-up of cabaret artists will explore how we see music in Them There Eyes. Rock enthusiasts will flock to You Am I Plays Spinal Tap (with front man Tim Rogers). Known for her razor-sharp wit and sassy stage presence, Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black’s Big Boo) brings jazzy reinterpretations of Bowie’s greatest hits. New Zealand’s charming rat pack, Modern Maori Quartet showcase Maori waiata, showband hits, pop classics, and originals, while cclaimed artists Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney will share backstage confessions and decades of theatrical highs and lows in Bosom Buddies. Madeleine Peyroux will deliver jazz and blues standards in a stunning Adelaide premiere. Joey Arias returns to the festival to revive the spirit of NYC’s legendary Club 57 in Three Floors of Madness. Archie Roach and

The bizarre story of a giant ape set to rock music is narrated by neo-punk cabaret diva Yana Alana joined by HOMOsapiens in The Legend Of Queen Kong. Opera Australia soprano Antoinette Halloran’s Taking it Up the Octave is hilariously risqué while being breathtakingly tender.

Artistic director Ali McGregor will display her extraordinary vocals when she transforms into 1950s Peruvian songbird and Hollywood darling Yma Sumac. She will also reembrace her circus days with a selection of mischievous burlesque acts for modern-day vaudeville sensation, Glorious Misfits. Adelaide Cabaret Festival favourites are back again this year – the opening night Variety Gala, Closing Gala celebrating the winter solstice with soulful songs and Family Gala with a musical junkyard theme.

Punters will stay warm at this year’s Wintergarden on the Riverdeck and Adelaide Festival Centre’s new Star Kitchen & Bar will provide nourishment for all the senses between shows.

Adelaide Cabaret Festival runs from Friday 8 June until Saturday 23 June at Adelaide Festival Centre Book via BASS on 131 246 or online adelaidecabaretfestival.com. au.

IT WAS A GOOD GOOD FRIDAY By Robert Dunstan When award winning Waymouth St hotel the Grace Emily announced that, due to a change in the liquor licensing laws, they would be opening the doors for the very first time in its long and lengthy history on Good Friday, there was much rejoicing throughout the land – well, at least in Adelaide and surrounds. Armed with this information, it took local person about town Evan Williams less than a minute to figure out that if he were to arrive at the pub when it opened, he could order a Coopers Dark Ale and go down in the history books as the first person in the known universe to buy a drink at the Grace Emily on a Good Friday. Thus, he arrived at the popular pub well before it was due to open and plonked himself out the front in his easy chair and proceeded to count down the hours.

Then, having helped carry out the pubs ‘No Pokies No TAB’ sign, he marched up to the bar and ordered a pint of the good stuff therefore going down forever in the annals of history, Well played sir.
