SIRQUS ALFON
Royal Croquet Club is returning for Adelaide Fringe although this time it will be located at Pinky Flat (Tarnda Womma) on the River Torrens on War Memorial Drive. Once again, however, the open-air space will boast an array of venues – Ukiyo, The Black Forest, Panama Club, Menagerie, The Parlour and Neon Forest - with over 40 shows over the course of 32 days and nights.
By Robert Dunstan It will also boast a number of Australian premieres including Sirqus Alfon’s I Am Somebody, which will run in Ukiyo for the duration of the festival and is a musical phenomenon that mixes beatboxing, clowning, chaos, magic and comedy to create a genre all of its own. Hailing from Sweden, Sirqus Alfon (using stage names Babham Halim, Ejve Åhlsten and Emilio Åhlsten) began life as a street performance act “Yes, the three of us started out at the age of 16 back in 1997, so 2017 is our 20th anniversary,” Erik Rosales, one of the three performers and a creator behind the company, says. “So it’s been a while. We were street performers for about seven yours and toured all around Europe and North America. And we’ve also done a lot of work with Clowns Without Borders.”
“And we are in China at the moment – in Shanghai for nine shows – and we also did the show in Edinburgh [Scotland] and it was wonderful – really great – to see the response we got. So we were really happy – it was our second time there – because there is just so much competition. And we had people coming back to see the show over and over and again.

“And there’s a quite funny thing I have been inspired by,” he says with a laugh. “A friend of mine, who gives speeches about technology, always asks the question, ‘If you wake up tomorrow morning and couldn’t use your smart phone, would you be happy?’ And, of course, everyone wants to wake up in the morning still being able to use their smart phone. It’s around 90% of people when they are asked. “But technology is also something that brings people together,” he states. “For example, being in China at the moment, we’ve seen that everyone here is using WeChat. So we will have to adapt the show to incorporate that. Because
“And it’s funny because at first they go, ‘Wow, look at all that amazing technology. How cool is that?’ But they don’t focus on how we are communicating with the technology.” The multi-media show also involves some audience interaction. “And, basically, that is down to our early days and our work on the streets,” Erik suggests. “As street performers, you kind of need that interaction because it helps people give you money if they feel engaged.
Clowns Without Borders was founded in Barcelona in July of 1993 “That is down and takes “But we are circus-style to our early days also very much performances and our work on using any new to refugee the streets. As street technology that camps comes out,” he performers, you around the continues. “For world. kind of need that instance we use interaction…” 3D printing in the “So, yeah,” Erik show now. And says. “We’ve done a lot of the show is refugee camps in about how to communicate quite a few countries. and work with all this new We recently did a camp in technology. Palestine.” The company also tour the world under their own steam and their current show is I Am Somebody, which has garnered strong reviews wherever it has played as it is a family-friendly offering that appeals to all ages.
quite close to themselves. I mean the worst thing that can happen is that their battery runs out.
“And technology is not something that is so exclusive anymore,” Erik says. “If you are on the subway, most people are looking at their smart phones or their IPads or whatever. And everybody seems to keep
they don’t have Instagram and Facebook here, they all use an app called WeChat to communicate. “Everyone is on it all the time and it’s their main means of communication in much the same way we use other social media,” Erik says. “And the Chinese are really into technology. Which has not been a total surprise.” Noe of the crew have been to Australia previously. “We’ve somehow travelled all over the world but never got down to Australia,’ Erik says. “So we’re really happy to be finally coming down as it will be the final piece in the puzzle. But we do have some friends in Adelaide. “One of our early mentors is from Adelaide and is
living back there now,” he continues. “His name is Dave and he is a really cool guy who used to sell juggling equipment in a little tiny city in Sweden. And he also played didgeridoo. And we met him at festivals when he went to them to sell his equipment.” Erik goes on to that much of Sirqus Alfon’s 20th anniversary year will be spent touring a new work. “It will be a busy year as we have just started a relationship with Aurora Nova, a big touring production company,” he says of the 20-year-old Berlin-based booking agency that boasts of growing roster of international artists and companies. “So there is a lot of work coming up for us,” Erik states. “We will be touring Germany, New Zealand and France with a new show. And, happily, that has come up really well which is not always the case. You can sometimes work for half a year creating something new only to then think, ‘Hmm, it’s okay but it’s not that good really’. And, with I Am Somebody, there might be something that lasts only for a couple of minutes in the show but we may have worked on that for a month and a half before we got it right and were happy with it. “You need to experiment – I don’t really know how to describe it – and somehow make it become closer to the audience,” he says. “Anyway, it’s always good to be proud of and happy with what you are touring,” Erik concludes. Sirqus Alfon’s I Am Somebody runs at Royal Croquet Club’s Ukiyo from Thursday 16 February until Sunday 19 March apart from Mondays with tickets at <adelaidefringe.com.au/ fringetix/sirqus-alfon-i-amsomebody>.

Underøath
American hardcore band Underøath have reunited for a tour to play their classic albums They’re Only Chasing Safety and Define The Great Line, so BSide Magazine enjoyed a conversion with founding member Aaron Gillespie who plays drums with the band along with providing any ‘clean’ vocals and also enjoyed a stint behind the kit as a touring member of Paramore and well as being a member of The Almost. By Robert Dunstan The two-time Grammynominated Underøath formed in 1997 with its members coming from the Florida townships of Tampa and Ocala and had released a series of albums and undergone several lineup changes before 2004’s They’re Only Chasing Safety catapulted the band into the major league.

And then we thought, ‘Well, let’s wait a couple of years and do the albums They’re Only Chasing 8
Australian tour and I suggest it will have been a long time since they tackled that material. “Ha, no,” he laughs. “We spent most of last year touring those two albums. We’ve been at it since January of 2016 and must have done about 100 shows since then. We’ve just been having a break for the holidays and haven’t played since October. “So we’ve had a bit of time off but we now need to rehearse so that we can be sure we don’t suck when we get down to Australia,” Aaron adds before going on to say the reformation shows have gone extremely well. “That tour last year was the most successful we’ve ever done,” he states. “Which is funny because, all these years later, we got back together and some of the
shows sold out six months in advance.” The band, for want of a better word, have had a tumultuous career with Underøath having to endure a number of line-up changes and Aaron being the only original member. “That’s interesting because I get asked quite a bit about being the only guy left,” he laughs. “But, the thing is, Underøath were a local band from Florida, and like any band just starting out, there’s going to be changes. And, to many, our current line-up is the one the world knows as Underøath because this is the line-up we had when had a first big success. “So, yes, while it’s true that I am the only original member, this is the line-up the world knows,” Aaron adds.
three at most – that turned into a three-year thing that included that Australian tour,” he says. “But now, with Underøath getting back together, I just don’t have time. But Paramore are still doing their thing and they remain good, good friends of mine.” Aaron says, being a surfer, the aspect he enjoys most about our country is the beaches. “It’s kinda like coming home,” he suggests with a laugh. “Because I grew up surfing, it’s kinda like being home but it has a different flavour. And, typically, I’ve always been down to Australia when it’s your summer so it’s like a holiday in the sun. I don’t live in Florida anymore – I live way up in the mountains – so it’s good to go somewhere where it’s pretty warm.” Aaron, a Christian, as are all the band members, is no longer involved in any youth group activities. “No, I haven’t done that for a while now,” he says. “I kinda found, for myself, I am a better voice outside of any form of organised religion. That works for some but I don’t think it’s for me anymore.” The musician has his own home studio. “So I’m always working on my own music and just released a new solo record [Out Of The Badlands via Tooth & Nail],” Aaron reveals. “I’m constantly workin’ on music. I’m one of those kinda guys.”
“This is the line-up that started making records professionally and doing the whole thing for real. “And most bands go through tumultuous times,” he then considers with a laugh. “When you are touring with six other guys there’s always going to be one person who is always happy and another who is going to be pretty pissed about something. And there’s always the one guy who is going to act like a total dick. It’s just the way it is when you are dealing with five other people because there are all these different emotions coming out. Everyone is different.” Aaron was last in Australia as a touring member of Paramore. “That was something that was just supposed to be for a couple of weeks – maybe
Aaron, whose mom sang in Christian country band Daystar, concludes by saying that Underøath are not sure what their next step will be. “For right now we are just focusing on this tour and getting everything running again,” he says. “But we do have big support tour coming up in the US with Bring Me The Horizon and then we continue our own tour in the UK as part of this reformation thing.” Underøath will play the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, on Wednesday 15 February with tickets via the venue or OzTix and sleepmakeswaves as special guests.

Tell us about some of the fantastic acrobatic feats you perform in Elixir. “The show is set in several acts, and so each time you drink a potion the physical attributes of the performers on stage change. We then record the results and experiment a little more with more potions. By Catherine Blanch Following a triumphant tour of the UK, performing to sold out audiences at Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe Festivals, the Best Cabaret Brighton Fringe 2015 award-winning Head First Acrobats are once again bringing their sexy circus bodies back Adelaide Fringe with their own unique style of breathtaking acrobatics, bold circus tricks, zany characters and hilarious comic timing in Elixir. Featuring National Institute Of Circus Arts in Melbourne graduates Cal Harris and Rowan Thomas, we speak with founding member Thomas Gorham who tells us how the trio got together. “I wrote the original version of Elixir when I first finished school,” he begins. It was written for me and another acrobat called John, but he hurt his back and his knee and was unable to do the show. It was when Cal offered to help me build a teeter board – which is like a seesaw that you do flips on – we started doing some hand-tohand acrobatic together and we just found it really easy to work together. From there we decided to continue with the show and rewrote John’s part for Cal and created this show. “That was back in 2013 and Cal was still at school so we didn’t do too much with the show in the beginning. Then we decided to make it a three-person show and that’s when Rowan got involved. From there it became less of a drama and much more of a comedy. Rowan is a bit of a clown so we rewrote some more of the show. When the 10
boys finished school we went on tour and haven’t stopped since.” Your shows have a bit of a pantomime theme to them. Do you have a background in theatre? “No, I started out as a break dancer, Thomas says. “I wanted to make a career out of being physical, but being a professional beat boy in Australia wasn’t exactly a smart move for my career so I ended up at circus school.” Tell us about Elixir. How did that story of trying to create an elixir of everlasting life come about? “My original piece was a 15-minute solo show which was based around Brumby’s Bakery in Melbourne, and my final graduation showcase piece was a head trapeze/ breakdancing act where I was a zombie. So I wanted to write a show that would justify that sort of absurdity,” he explains. “Originally we were going to make different potions with different effects, but then we started thinking about how zombies were made – meaning that they’re not really magical but are made in a laboratory. We put a lot of pop-culture references into it and added a plenty of comedy, then all of a sudden we’re in the lab, sneaking around, drinking potions and making zombies.”
“The opening act is handto-hand acrobatics which is us standing on top of each other, flipping over, and doing handstands and headstands on top of each other,” Thomas says. “We also have some ladder acrobatics, hand balancing and some head trapeze – which is a trapeze that swings from the ceiling and you balance on it on the top of your head. The clowning character does some work in the giant Cyr Wheel; he’s a really technical artist that goes upside down and spins around with in the Wheel. Then we finish with the Teeter Board act which is the seesaw.” Having previously seen Head First Acrobats perform, I can honestly say that some of what you guys do is a little nerve wrecking. Even with all your years of practise and performing, do you still have moments where you get nervous? “Absolutely!” he chuckles. “It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve done a trick, if you could die doing it you’re focussed [laughs].” What’s the scariest thing that you do?
And these zombies imaginary or are each of you playing many different characters?
“Probably when I’m swinging on the head trapeze,” Thomas says. “I’m balancing upside down on a small platform that is attached to a bar while it’s swings from the ceiling; that moment that I let go and have to free balance is just a bit nerve wrecking every time… because if I fall off, I’m upside down!”
“We just play ourselves,” he says. “But, without wanting to give too much away, one of the characters does turn into a zombie.”
So, what part of you woke up one morning and decided that you wanted to spend your days putting your life at risk?
“My coach said to me one day that I would be good at this and I agreed to do it,” he laughs. Which performance moment most amazes you about your two acrobatic cohorts? “Cal is one of the only people in the world who can do a handstand on top of a freebalancing ladder, so it’s a pretty rare trick. He is about 152cm, which is quite tall, so that trick must be pretty scary for him – even though he does it all the time. “For Rowan, there are so many technical moves in his Cyr Wheel act; some of them are so complex that I don’t even know what’s happening,” he says. “If there was anything that would make him nervous, it’s probably one of the big tricks in the Cyr Wheel but, honestly, all of his tricks are really hard.” How similar is this year’s production of Elixir in comparison to last year’s performance? “We’ve had a lot of things change on the technical side, so we’ve got a really good sound, lighting plan and plot which have really upped the production value of the show. Comedy wise, it’s also improved; we’ve added so many more jokes. We started out as quite an acrobatic show, then an acrobaticcomedy show, and now it’s like a comedy-acrobatic show [chuckles].” Are you happier with it that way? “Absolutely!” Thomas enthuses. “We haven’t cut any tricks or acrobatics – we just kept putting more and more comedic moments into is so the show has got funnier each season. The only way to make this show even funnier is to keep finding more jokes, so that’s what we did.” Head First Acrobats’ Elixir runs at The Peacock at Gluttony, at various times from Tuesday 21 February until Saturday 18 March. Book at FringeTIX.
BOB’S
BITS with Robert Dunstan
Get set for a double whammy! The fact Sydney’s Lachy Doley Group are coming to town to launch their new offering, Lovelight, is cause for considerable celebration as they have asked that legendary power soul Double Wammy! reform and to roll up and join them.
I remember it well as (somewhere) I still have the official invite as it was a big affair funded by a major record label. The band had somehow inked a deal with a little label run by Neil Mumme (who used to run the Great Southern Blues & Rockabilly Festival at Narooma) and he was, in turn, associated with Festival Records who
shows in Adelaide for Austinbased guitar slinger Denny Freeman who had once played in a band called The Cobras with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Later, when Denny came back to town as a member of Bob Dylan’s touring and recording band, he again played with them at a low-key show at a pub somewhere on Waymouth St. It was a low-key affair because Denny certainly did not want Bob to hear that he was moonlighting. Anyway, that all brings me round to first time I came across keyboard player Lachy Doley and, I remember it well as he was also wearing shorts. Thing is, Lachy was in shorts because they formed an integral part of his school uniform and he had just

“When Glenn came to Sydney to play, Jimmy Barnes had recommended me to him,” Lachy had told me during an interview a couple of years ago. “And so I played some shows in Australia – one in Sydney at The Basement which was filmed for a DVD and one down in Melbourne – with Glenn and then, when Jon died, Glenn contacted me about playing on a tribute version of Highway Star. “He told me he was also getting Steve Vai and Chad Smith involved and it turned out great – it’s a really rockin’ version,” he says. “So I was stoked to be involved. “And there was some talk of doing a European tour [for the tribute album], but it never happened,” he’d then added with a noticeable sigh.
As such it only serves to remind me of the first time I saw Double Wammy! in live action mode and reckon it would have been in the late ’80s when they were regulars at long-gone and much-loved city venue Club Foote. It was back when Brian Morrison, who now plays guitar in the band who helms (mostly valve) amplifier repair shop Cityamp Workshop (2834 Logan St, Adelaide, SA, and contactable on 0409 756 388), was the combo’s Hammond player and I recall one night the instrument being rocked back and forth and back again while he was delivering a blistering Booker T-inspired solo. It added greatly to the show’s theatrics and, once seen, is something that is never easily forgotten. They became a band I always made a note of going to see whenever they hit the stage and I have rather vague recollections of them undertaking some kind of album launch at Hindley St’s Cargo Club sometime in the early ’90s. I do, however, have much clearer memories of when Double Wammy! did a CD launch at the Wheatsheaf Hotel.
put on quite a shindig. From memory, if was a Thursday evening and guests were treated to some cube of cheese on a stick and there were, of course, some complimentary liquic refreshments. And, of course, Double Wammy! played a number of numbers from their new album. I can also readily recall another occasion Double Wammy! played the Wheatsheaf Hotel as it was a very hot afternoon – it must have been summer – and they were set to play out in the beergarden. And the reason I remember it well is because they were all wearing shorts due to the oppressive heat! Until then, Pearl Jam were the only other band I had ever seen wear shorts on stage and that was only in video clips. So, to experience such as thing in the flesh was quite a musical treat. I also recall when Double Wammy! organised some
come from his chosen place of learning to a Double Wammy! rehearsal session at Derringers. He’d been seconded into the band due his brother, Clayton, leaving them to forge a career in Sydney where he has gone on to play keyboards with Jimmy Barnes and also frequently tour with Canada’s Harry Manx. Lachy, after playing around town with Double Wammy! as well as The Blues Brothers & Sisters Of Soul and leading his own acid jazz group, Planet Groove, then also took off for Sydney where he has also forged a considerable career as a member of Jimmy Barnes’ touring band as well as leading his own band. His prowess on the keyboards has also led Lachy to work with a number of high profile people and when Deep Purple’s keyboard player, Jon Lord, passed away some three years ago, that band’s former bass player Glenn Hughes put together a tribute album
As well as often working with Jimmy Barnes, Lachy also became an unofficial member of popular Aussie rock band Powderfinger until they called it a day. “Powderfinger had wanted a keyboard player on their [2013] album Vulture Street,” Lachy explained. “And someone suggested me to them. So I played organ and piano on that. “But it was about four or five years later that they rang and asked if I wanted to go out on the road with them,” he’d continued. “And then I played with them on every single show until the very end. “So that was pretty awesome because we also toured the world a few times,” Lachy added. Keyboard wizard Lachy Doley has a show with his band at the Governor Hindmarsh, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, on Friday 3 February to promote a new album, Lovelight, with tickets on sale now via the venue or OzTix and power soul combo Double Wammy! as special guests.

SPLIT (M) **1/2 LIVE BY NIGHT (MA) ***
Ben Affleck’s first feature film as director was an adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel (Gone Baby Gone back in 2007 and starring his brother Casey), and now this, his fourth, is based upon another Lehane work (the second in a series following Joe Coughlin, and that actually might be a bit of a spoiler, as knowing it means that you can be pretty sure that the character survives this one). It’s a handsomelooking, strongly-played and often impressively violent epic, and yet, in the end, it somehow falls short of being a modern classic. During the Prohibition era we meet Ben’s Bostonian Great War veteran Joe, a shonky sort and bank robber with a disapproving police captain Dad (Brendan Gleeson as Thomas and playing up his Irish accent) and a notso-secret girlfriend named Emma (Sienna Miller), who’s also the partner of muchfeared gangster Albert White (English actor Robert Glenister playing up the nastiness with glee). When convoluted circumstances lead Joe to prison and then the employ of another
major crim kingpin (Remo Girone as Maso Pescatore), he’s assigned to take a gig in Tampa, Florida, setting up a gigantic casino and bootlegging booze with underhand help from piously religious police chief Figgis (Chris Cooper), whose aspiring actress daughter Loretta (Elle Fanning) is set to play an important part in the saga. Joe also falls for Graciela (Zoe Saldana, who’s not Avatar blue or Guardians Of The Galaxy green here), runs afoul of the KKK (cue lots of casually racist talk) and winds up attempting to convince us that he’s a sympathetic, principled and decent guy, which is really a bit of a stretch given his tendency to shoot up all and sundry with the nearest tommy-gun. And yet Ben is nevertheless good here, and shows a deft hand at staging bloody gunplay (especially in several showy montages vaguely influenced by Martin Scorsese and his Goodfellas, perhaps) and coaxing pleasing work from a name cast (Brendan, Zoe, Chris and Elle are particularly fine), although it all winds up just missing the mark… much like Ben himself (ouch!).
Mad Dog Bradley
Psychodramas and horror flicks would have you believe that multiple personality disorder (the more PC term is DID, or dissociative identity disorder) is extremely common, exciting and scary, and yet in actuality it’s very, very rare and not particularly cinematic, even if writer, director, producer and bitplayer (of course) M Night Shyamalan thinks otherwise. A trio of Philadelphian teens, namely emo-ish Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy from The Witch), birthday girl Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula), leave a party and are somewhat improbably abducted by an uptight-looking guy played by a bespectacled James McAvoy (a long way from his X-Men niceness). Locked up in a windowless room, the three at first think that more than one villain is behind their kidnapping, and yet naturally it‘s revealed that ‘Dennis’ is just one of a series of 23 personalities within the one guy, and therefore McAvoy has the actor-ish opportunity to play about 10 or so of them. And they include: campy, arty Barry; a dim 9 year old named Hedwig; and even (spoilers?) Patricia, a prim lady who freaks out when sandwiches aren’t sliced properly (and reminds
us that McAvoy looked great in drag in the filming of Irvine Welsh’s Filth too). If you can get over the little fact that the svelte James could easily be overpowered by three strapping and frightened teenagers then you’ll also probably swallow the whopper notion that the girls (and the star’s other ‘selves’) are worried as their captor is supposedly just about ready to manifest a would-be-terrifying 24th personality, and that his psychiatrist Dr Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley, also in MNS’ The Happening and the original Carrie too) has a wacky idea that DID people are the next stage of human development, or something (like the X-Men, perhaps?). And, um, we wouldn’t be building to one of those boffo Shyamalan twists… would we? Although McAvoy is obviously strong (albeit in a ludicrous role/roles), there’s so much here that’s simply wrong, and the last 30 seconds have already proven hugely controversial, as many audiences don’t understand the final nutty revelation. And that trick isn’t going to be given away here, especially as genre fans are such an easily breakable bunch… get it???

CARUS THOMPSON It’s been a while between drinks for WA’s Carus Thompson – his last release was a double live album – but he’s now back with a brand new offering, Island, and a tour that will kick off in Adelaide with his band at a Sunday afternoon, family-friendly matinee show that will also have Nathan Gaunt as special guest. By Robert Dunstan It’s been five years since the release of Carus’ last studio album, the Greg Arnoldproduced Caravan, but the musician says there are reasons for that.

“I’d been listening to a lot of Springsteen and just wanted “Well, since then I’ve had two to write some songs using kids so all that kinda puts a simple, everyday stories bit a stop to everything,” he but one that had an epic laughs. “And Caravan was theme,” Carus also the third record in reveals. “I wanted a row that I’d done to write storywith Greg [Arnold “It was the songs and of Things Of Stone first time I’d that’s what & Wood] and I focussed the third album ever seen him on and I’d sent over to and I didn’t realise because I’d Nashville to get been touring mixed. what an incredible Europe so performer he often, I just “So it was the end wanted to of a cycle – a decade is.” settle back here of hard-core touring and also try and throughout Australia write songs about and Europe – so I really felt what was going on here.” I’d reached a certain point,” Carus continues. “I always Carus, who is confident that felt that you wrote a record, his followers have remained then you recorded it and faithful and knows that he then toured it to death and has a strong following in then took a bit of a break Europe, ventured along to to recharge and write new see Springsteen in concert songs. recently over in Perth. “But because I was so busy “That was pretty amazing,” with the children, I didn’t he enthuses. “It was the write for quite a while,” he first time I’d ever seen him says. “But then we built a and I didn’t realise what an granny flat out the back of

incredible performer he is. Watching him, I could understand that’s kinda what I’d always been trying to achieve with my own shows – not that I’m ever going to be playing huge stadiums. So it was a real lesson. There’s an emotional and intellectual side to what Springsteen does but it’s also very entertaining as well. He knows how to get a place rockin’.” “Bruce totally understands that it’s all about the moment,” Carus suggests. “It’s in the now and all about that moment which is the way a live show should be.” Island was produced by Joel Quatermain of Eskimo Joe. “I went to school with Joel so I’ve known him since I was about 14,” Carus says. “And when I spoke to Greg [Arnold] about working with Joel he said, ‘Just do it. It’s an important step’. And I think Joel is going to become one of the big-name producers over the next few years. I probably won’t be able to afford him next time. “He’s just got it going on and he’s really easy to work with,” he continues. “That’s not to say we didn’t have disagreements about some stuff, but you need that when you are making a record.” Joel also gets a couple of cowrites on the album. “They were songs I took along to record that I thought were finished,” Carus admits with a laugh. “But Joel would say, ‘No, no, we need to cut this bit out or add this. We need to work on this part’. So I just let him go for it because I’m not so precious anymore that I feel I have to do it all myself. But there were other songs Joel felt were fine.
“And because Joel is a drummer, he has such an incredible sense of melody,” he adds. ”He knows pop melodies and hooks inside out having worked with Eskimo Joe. Their music is quite different to mine, of course, but you can’t say they didn’t write really good songs.” Double J have already picked up Lies from Island to play on daily rotation. “And that’s great and really exciting for me because I don’t usually get that kind of response from radio,” Carus confides. “Although I did have a bit of success early on with triple j because I had a song, Ain’t No Crime that was the opening song on a compilation they put out.” When I saw that Nathan Gaunt was to be special guest for this tour, I thought Carus may have enticed him out of hibernation as I had not seen his name for a good number of years. “No, no,” Carus, who will tour Europe again soon, laughs as we round up the conversation. “Nathan went over to the US where he’s done really well for himself. He got spotted somehow by Carole King and ended up touring with her and it all gone from that. And he also got known by someone who used to work with Jeff Buckley. So it’s great that he’s going to be doing these shows with me.” WA’s Carus Thompson will have his band with him when he steps into the Grace Emily, 232 Waymouth St, for a matinee performance on Sunday 12 February to launch his new album, Island, with Nathan Gaunt as special guest.

an album that didn’t treat the listener as someone who could only listen to a three-minute pop song. It was a challenge to sit and listen to the entire musical experience. “And it’s a fantastic piece of music and incredibly wellwritten by a guy who was only 17-years-old at the time,” Daniel adds. “That’s just amazing.” When musicians Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth elected to pay homage Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells in the Blue Mountains to a few friends and family, little did they know the concept would be such as success they are now able to successfully tour it around the world as Tubular Bells For Two. By Robert Dunstan “Aiden and I were completely taken by surprise because it started out and an exercise for us to reconnect,” Daniel announces. “We grew up together but had moved apart so when we found each other again, one of our favourite pastimes was getting together and listening to vinyl with a couple of glasses of wine. “And one night, during winter with a big fire going, Tubular Bells was one of those vinyl albums we were listening to,” he continues. “We just happened to put it on and we then thought it would be a good album to do with just two guitars. That was all we wanted to do with it. So we started mucking around with it and then thought, ‘Why don’t we learn the whole thing and then put it on at our local café’.
Tubular Bells certainly wasn’t a party album but more one that was best experienced alone in a meditative state.
“It’s funny you should say that because, at the beginning, I go into a very meditative state,” successful it’s been. Daneil says. “It We’ve been very slowly evolves “In the grateful and over that humbled by it” beginning some 10-minute or so thought it might be The opening musician a parody because we motif, so thinks that used were doing it at Fringe Ithat success has come Festivals, our aim has to get about due within always been to present the to many having fond the music of Tubular moment. memories Bells in the truest “And I of the original album. way we can.” need to do that because “We didn’t realise performing this what an important album piece is incredibly stressful,” Tubular Bells was to many he adds with a laugh. “The people,” Daniel says. ‘We music is quite mellow but I knew it was considered to be an iconic album but we didn’t often find myself thinking, ‘Shit, I have to race over to

this time we’ll be performing the show in a proper theatre {Dunstan Playhouse]. Last time we were there, as good as it was, we were in a tiny little venue that was very cramped. I mean, it was great and the atmosphere was fantastic but it was a bit uncomfortable on those wooden planks.
“So we can’t wait to do the show in Adelaide in a theatre because it works best in a proper theatre with great sound,” he adds. “So we’ll be able to give people that this time.” Mike Oldfield has also become aware of the concept. “We’ve talked to him a few times over Skype and he’s given us his blessing and been very supportive,” Daniel says. “So that’s been great because he’s told us to keep doing it and he’ll reap the royalties. “And while in the beginning some thought it might be a parody because we were doing it at Fringe Festivals, our aim has always been to present the music of Tubular Bells in the truest way we can.” Tubular Bells For Two, a recreation of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, will return for Adelaide Fringe and will be performed at Dunstan
“But one thing led to another and we had the crazy idea of when, at the end of side one of the album, a procession of instruments is announced and we thought, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be fun to include those instruments as well?’ We could announce them and then run around the stage and play them to try and make it sound like the original album. “And a friend ran a theatre restaurant in Katoomba so we approached him about the crazy idea and thought we’d get around 30 people,” Daniel says. “So we booked a night and it was going to be the one and only time we did it, but it sold out.” Since then, of course, the show has taken off.
realise it was such a personal one for so many people. Over the years, we have heard so many stories and, remarkably, they are all very similar. Somehow, in some way, Tubular Bells, helped people grow and gain a better understanding of themselves.
“We got asked to play again and again and then we toured it all around Australia and we’ve also taken it all over the world,” Daniel says. “We just can’t believe how
“And I wonder if that’s because it’s an instrumetal album that was thrown into the world of pop and rock music but gave people time for contemplation. It was
the other side of the stage to play that instrument next. I wonder if I’ll make it’. So the opening is the way to keep yourself calm and relaxed so that you can give the rest of the performance full justice.”
