BUSTAMENTO Melbourne’s Bustamento, a mento combo led by Nicky Bomba of very recent visitors Melbourne Ska Orchestra, are heading back over the border to be one of the headlining acts as this year’s Blenheimfest, which will take place as a two-day camping festival up in the Clare Valley. By Robert Dunstan From humble beginnings, the licensed outdoor festival, which boasts food stalls and a market area including an op shop, has greatly expanded and now attracts several thousand patrons. All proceeds are going directly to New Hope Cambodia; an organisation that helps provide free education, medical and welfare services to the people of Mondul Bai and Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Various Nefarious will be roaming the site. Bustamento have been playing around the place for a number of years – they were last in town to do a big show at the Governor Hindmarsh with Babylon Burning – and play music known as mento which is the lively Jamaican folk music from the late ’50s that preceded ska and reggae. Nicky Bomba was keen to chat about the combo heading to Blenheimfest on Good Friday.

“And then, ages ago, I saw a band playing mento which inspired me to form my own thing doing that kind of music,” Nicky says. “So it’s old school mento which is regarded as Jamaican folk music, but we add our contemporary flavours to it. We give it a little twist.” Nicky goes on to say that while it’s mostly original material penned in that style, playing mento allows them to do a few covers. “So there will be six or seven covers in our set, but it’s not going to be songs that most people are familiar with,” he says. “The covers we do are pretty obscure. And, it’s just a lot of fun and much of that comes from the three or four-part harmonies we bring to it. And, mento really has a tradition with it.” The band have been operation for almost 13 years. “But it all began as a kind of hobby band in 2005 and we didn’t play all that much for the first couple of years,” Nicky says. “And then we started getting more and more gigs so we recorded an album, Intrepid Adventures Of The Lost Riddim Islands, and did a national tour. “And from there we started getting invited to play festivals and it’s been great that people really like what we are doing and want to book us,” he continues. “And we just did a festival in the Blue Mountains – The Blue Mountains Music Festival – and played just after Paul Kelly. So, it was great to be associated with him and play on the same stage. “So we were approached about Blenheimest and were told it was a festival that was about an hour and a half

outside of Adelaide and we thought that sounded great,” Nicky says. “We all thought, ‘Yep, that’s quite achievable. Let’s do it’. And, it’s been great that the organisers have been so understanding about what it takes to get a band over from interstate to do a festival.” Following the release of their debut, Bustamento then put out the wonderfully-titled, Intercontinental Journey 7, and are currently working on a third offering. Nicky concludes by saying they got their name from Prince Buster (who sadly passed away only a few months ago) who was born Cecil Campbell. “We were looking for a name and found out that his middle name was Bustamente,” he says of the Jamaican singer who got that name from the Labour activist and first post-independence Jamaican Prime Minister William Bustamente. “So we just decided to call ourselves Bustamento,” Nicky laughs. I like to joke with him that he’s a rock’n’roll veteran, but he hates hearing that. “Please print that!” Otto laughs. Printed it is. And what about that crazy EGC guitar you play Otto, made out of solid aluminium? A melted glob of recycling cans? How does it give you the tones you want?

The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel is set to play host to one very powerful and respected Australian post rock quartet sleepmakeswaves as they tour their new studio album Made Of Breath Only. You may have seen them recently support Underoath at the Gov, but we are promised a completely new set with this completely new album. By Ian Messenger I spoke to Otto WicksGreen, pivotal man of sleepmakeswaves and that rare breed of alpha dude who is sublimely humble and unassuming. He was disembarking a train somewhere in Sydney and kindly appeased my worries that it was not a good time for a phone interview by saying that in fact he thinks better whilst walking.

It’s a bit of a cringe, we wish we didn’t have to do this, but it’s the reality of the industry, it is what it is.” I was wondering if sleepmakeswaves had worked with Nick DiDia before. “Yeah Nick DiDia did our last record Love Of Cartography and so it was a pretty natural decision to get back into the studio with him because the relationship was already established. We knew how he worked and what a great producer he was and what kind of vibe he was going to bring. “What we loved about working with him is his focus

“Because it is all aluminium and there is no wood in the guitar and electric guitars are all about resonance… You pluck the string and it resonates across the wood and the pickups pick up that resonance… But aluminium is a much more naturally resonate material and so you just get more of everything. You get more highs, more lows and more mids. “You get this amazing clarity. And, with the kind of pickups I use on my EGC which are wide ranging you pick up that whole spectrum. The way I look at it, it gives me more colours to use. And, then I paint those colours with EQing on the amp and effects pedals and stuff. Which means I have to do more work to get the sound I want, but it means I have way more options available. “So everything from beautiful slinky cleans to roaring crushing overdrive sounds I can do. I recorded a bunch with the record, and it’s definitely my favourite guitar to play live. American doom metal merchants Windhand and heading to Adelaide for the first time although it will not mark the first time they have played in Australia as BSide Magazine discovered during a particularly engaging phone conversation with drummer Ryan Wolfe. By Robert Dunstan “We came down about two years ago and did four shows in New Zealand and then five shows along the east coast of Australia,” he says. “And we did that tour with Beastwars, a [sludge metal] band from New Zealand. But, no, we didn’t get over to Adelaide on that trip. “And we had asked why we weren’t going to Adelaide and were told it just wasn’t going to work out,” Ryan sighs. “But we’ve heard so many cool things about Adelaide that we’re really pleased it’s happening this time.”

“No, we try not to pay him at all,” Ryan laughingly jokes. Windhand have had a couple of line-up changes along the way. “Our original bass player, Nathan Hilbish, graduated from college and now works at building amplifiers and guitar pedals,” Ryan says. “And he’s become pretty good at it [he’s endorsed by King Buzzo of The Melvins} and now runs Hilbish Design. He’s actually built couple of amps for the guitar player with King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard.

“It was something that wasn’t there before so we asked him to join the band and he

agreed,” he adds. “So here we are five years later.” Windhand’s latest release, Grief’s Infernal Flower, has been their most widely accepted to date. “It’s done pretty well, yeah,” Ryan reflects. “And I think one of the reasons for that was that we worked with Jack Endino [Soundgarden, Mudhoney and, of course, Nirvana] who is such an awesome engineer. And, hanging out with Jack and watchin’ him at work was just fantastic. He’s probably forgotten more things than I’ll ever know. “Y’know, we were in his studio and Jack’s nonchalantly sayin’ things like, ‘Oh, that’s the amp Kurt Cobain used on Bleach’. And we were all just like, ‘What!’. So, it was amazing recording Grief’s Infernal Flower with Jack. “And working with Jack was something we’d been thinking about for a while as we were all big fans of the SubPop label, especially when we were younger,” Ryan adds. “And then Garrett [Morris], one of Windhand’s guitar players, met someone who knew Jack and it all started rolling from there. “And we also did a tour with a band called High On Fire who had worked with Jack on one of their albums and they had nothing but good things to say about him,” Ryan then announces.

“And the new album is one of the reasons we are coming down on tour,” he adds. “We had planned to get back [to Australia] last summer but there were scheduling problems.” While undertaking some research prior to chatting to Ryan, I came across an amusing eight-minute interview on YouTube the band had done for the website Kids Interview Bands at <kidsinterviewbands. com>. During the interview, when asked what his first album was, Ryan says that, ‘It would have been a Van Halen album but my mom wouldn’t let me buy it so I had to buy a Tears For Fears album instead but then became a big fan’. “Oh, that interview was a lot of fun,” Ryan laughs. “In fact it’s probably one of the coolest interviews we’ve ever done because Kids Interview Bands is a very cool thing. POWER RANGERS (M) ** The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which now drop the first two words as they sound dumb) have been around for an awfully long time, and have featured in several dire TV series and two ghastly ‘90s movies, and now it looks like a new cycle of crappy pics (and tawdry related merchandise) is on its way thanks to this tedious reboot. Retelling the Origins tale of the Rangers with fancy FX, name actors and jaded attempts to appeal to minorities, it’s a mostly mind-numbing experience that combines Japanese manga and ‘kaiju’ (look it up), American teen-epic clichés, grating pop sound tracking and the most cynically calculated cashing-in, sorry, ‘franchising’.

Five pseudo-tearaway adolescents in Angel Grove (which is meant to be in the US but looks like Vancouver, and it was) are united in weekend detention and wind up digging up and reactivating the Power Coins, becoming the Rangers and familiarising themselves with that complicated plot about the prehistoric battle that left onetime Earth-defending Red Ranger Zordon dead millions of years ago and the evil Rita Repulsa dormant. Zordon has been uploaded into the standard underground ship’s computer and is portrayed, 16

amazingly enough, by Bryan Cranston, whose high-flown pontifications about acting in last year’s autobiography A Life In Parts didn’t stop him taking the money and running here. Lots of clunky character stuff happens as the kids discover their dopey powers, and they’re an irritating bunch numbering Jason (Perthborn Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Zack (Ludi Lin), Billy (R.J. Cyler), who’s “on the spectrum”, meaning he’s the first autistic superhero (according to the publicity), and Trini (Becky G), who talks about girlfriend problems, which supposedly makes her the first lesbian superhero. All this posturing and deliberate controversycourting then takes a backseat as bad Rita returns, and she’s played by Elizabeth Banks, who isn’t taking any of this shtick seriously for a second and is the best thing here as she hams it up royally. Directed by Dean Israelite (of the superior time-travel saga Project Almanac) and with only one of the Rangers’ creators credited (Haim Saban is in there but Shuki Levy isn’t, so lawsuits will surely follow), this is dreadful enough to have you thinking that sequels couldn’t possibly happen. But, so help me, they are, so morphin Hell!!!

SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND: THE ALBUM, THE BEATLES AND THE WORLD IN 1967 Brian Southall (Hachette Australia), 192pp, $39.99 The Beatles’ six-monthsin-the-making Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band turns 50 in June 2017, and while many jaded types insist that Abbey Road or The White Album (a.k.a. simply The Beatles) are better or less twee or whatever, there’s no denying the huge and lasting impact its 13 tracks have had - or is that actually 12 tracks, as the title tune is essentially the same when it’s reprised? Or maybe 14, if you include the weird dog whistle at the very end of A Day In The Life and the infamous ‘inner groove’? At any rate, Southall, a longtime journo, author and more (who’s personally worked with various Beatles, which is pretty unusual for this sort of thing), here not only details the production of Pepper - how it came after the individually-profiled band members had stopped touring, the genesis and production of each song, and so forth - in the book’s ‘A-Side’, but then offers a ‘B-Side’ where the world as

it was in 1967 is studied, and he demonstrates the enormous impact the Beatles’ creation had upon it. Therefore legions of Fab Four fans can revel in bits of trivia they still might not know (Ringo objected to the line “Would you throw ripe tomatoes at me?” in With A Little Help From My Friends and he helped change it to the sweeter “Would you stand up and walk out on me?”) and some rare photographs, and then get a potted history of what was going on during the long-lost, much-mysticised ‘Summer Of Love’. Movies like Blow-Up are analysed, Dr. Timothy Leary and his love of LSD is discussed (and how this led to the sometimes hazardous wonders of psychedelia), and everyone from Muhammad Ali and Che Guevara (who died on October 9 1967) to Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Mama Cass, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys and The Monkees get a look-in. And yes, most of them were damn jealous when they first heard Pepper. And, what else can be said? A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Melbourne-based singer songwriter Abbie Cardwell is using a national tour with Tony Joe White as a great excuse to slot in a couple of solo shows in here home state of South Australia so BSide Magazine enjoyed a quick chat to her over the telephone.

who fought in the Mexican Revolution. “But we have no idea when that’s going to be released although there are discussions about it coming out via a European record label,” Abbie adds. “We’re just waiting to see about that.” Abbie was recently featured in the Mexicanmade documentary I’m Here For One Night which has enjoyed world-wide screenings. “And, at the beginning of March, it showed again in Mexico City and it’s still getting picked up by little film festivals around the world,” she says. “They are still getting I’m Here For One Night accepted into lots of independent film festivals. But, I think it would be great if they could release it through iTunes because it could then be promoted properly and more people would get to see it. “Personally, I’d like to see another edit,” Abbie whispers, “because a lot has happened since it was filmed. But, I still think it’s a very powerful documentary about Mexico because it shows an Australian girl go over and become totally enamoured with their country. “There is a lot of negative stuff coming out about Mexico, especially in regards to politics, so to see someone from elsewhere enjoying their food, culture and music is a very positive thing,” she decides. What is the fascination for you with Mexico and where did it come from? “That’s an interesting question and one I get asked

a lot but I think it’s something that just somehow happened to me,” Abbie responds. “I just felt really called to go there. I’d also been collecting some vintage records of some quite cheesy Mexican stuff – things like Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – and I just fell in love with it. “And then I started listening to Mexican remixes of hit songs from the ’50s and ‘60s and was just stunned at how great they sounded,” she continues. “It was just that the remixes were so much, much better than the originals and I started to wonder just what was in the water down there. So I knew I just had to go and visit Mexico to find out.” Abbie concludes by revealing that she has all the songs for a new solo album. “So, at some point this year, I will be recording them,” she says. “But I still really don’t know exactly what I’m after with that because I’ve had such an interesting journey. “I’ve gone from being a singer songwriter doing fairly reflective music to playing with a 10-piece band in Melbourne and also working with a Mexican band,” Abbie continues. “And all those collaborations have really helped my song writing. So, to now just bring it back to it about being just about me is both fascinating and interesting. “Even I don’t know how my next album will sound – it may well depend on the producer I use,” she says with a slight sigh. “But I’m guessing it may be an amalgamation of all my influences over the years. “So there may be a pinch of Calexico, a bit of Mexicana and all kinds of other stuff,” Abbie laughs. “We’ll just have to wait and see.” Abbie Cardwell play McLaren Vale’s The Singing Gallery on Saturday 8 April, the Wheatsheaf Hotel, 39 George St, Thebarton, from 4pm on Sunday 9 April with Max Savage and will open for Tony Joe White at the Governor Hindmarsh, 49 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, on Tuesday 11 March with tickets via OzTix.

Adelaide’s Michael Petkovic set up Move2Live in January of this year as a way of encouraging people to meet up, exercise and then socialise over a few refreshing beverages with the aim being of getting folks from all walks of life together and become involved in a community event. By Robert Dunstan It was a couple of tragic events involving close friends with mental health issues that led Michael, who freely admits to once having some issues of his own in that regard, to putting together Move2Live. “I thought Move2Live was a good idea for people to maybe focus on ways of dealing with things happening in their lives in a positive way,” he says. “And I knew that exercise is a great way of clearing your head. That’s helped me in the past so I thought that if I set it up it would be a good social catch up for people as well as an opportunity to also get a bit fitter and feel good. When Michael first organised Move2Live in early January, he was the only person who turned up, but the regular weekly event now attracts quite a number of people with many new friendships being formed.

And, there’s always a group of walkers. So, it’s about four kilometres for the walkers and about five and a half kilometres for the runners. All that takes about 40 minutes.

“And then we all walk back to the pub together for a few cheeky ones,” he adds with a laugh. “And some people will hang around for quite a while before slowly drifting off home.” The concept’s name has changed from Run For Life to Move2Live since January. “Run For Life was my initial name for it because I love running,” Michael says. “But once you begin to share ideas with people you understand that not

Anyone is welcome to come along and join in and while we’ve yet to have someone come along in a wheelchair, they would be more than welcome to join in.” Michael goes on to say he chose the Grace Emily Hotel as the meeting place due to the pub’s community-minded nature. “I knew that both [owners] George and Sym would be supportive of what I was doing,” he announces. “They are both lovely human beings and it’s nice to do something that is very much aligned to what they are about. The Grace is just a good place to meet to people and you never know who might be there. “And I’m glad I’m doing it at the Grace because I am a big believer in supporting small, independent local businesses,” Michael adds. “And it’s been good for them as we’ve had people roll up to Move2Live who are not necessarily Grace Emily regulars and may not have even been to the pub before and experience what it’s all about. And popping in to the

Grace is definitely an experience because it has such a lot of character.” Michael concludes by confirming that Move2Life will continue during the upcoming winter months and beyond. “I’m fully committed to rockin’ up to the Grace every Wednesday evening for the foreseeable future,” he says. “And if there is a night I can’t make it I’m now confident that someone will step up and take over for the night.

‘And while I would like it to eventually expand I’m really just feeling my way with it,” Michael says. “But I would like to see some local councils set up something similar in their area. a rap thing,” Tony Joe says. “And that’s just me playin’ some guitar and Billy Bob talkin’ away and doin’ some rappin’.” Speakin’ of fishin’, as we were earlier, didn’t you once invite Elvis Presley to accompany you one time? “Oh sure,” Tony Joe confirms. “My wife, Leanne, and I had been invited to go see Elvis play in Vegas because at that time he was doing Polk Salad Annie every night. So, we got flown there for a week and put up in a hotel and got to see Elvis every night. “And I’d said to him, ‘Hey, if you ever want to get away from all this for a while, I know a nice little quiet spot where we can hang out and just do some fishin’.

By Robert Dunstan When swamp music exponent Tony Joe White last done paid us a visit it was to play the boutique BlenheimFest camping and music event and many were disappointed that the music legend was unable to schedule a concert in Adelaide. Be that as it may, when Tony Joe heads down to Australia on his current tour, he will kick off his visit, that will include a spot or two at Byron Bay’s Bluefest, with a show at his regular city haunt at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel. “And I can’t wait to come back down and see some good weather,” the Louisiana-born musician announces over the telephone. “We’ve had a pretty bad winter here in Franklin [the suburb of Nashville, Tennessee, where he now lives in an Antebellum era house with a recording studio attached],” Tony Joe reveals in his long, slow steady Southern drawl. “it’s been a pretty strange winter all round,” he continues. “Y’know, some days it’ll be spring weather and the next if will be only 33 degrees [Fahrenheit] and then it’ll be like spring again and then the next day you’ll get some snow comin’ in. 22

“I don’t know what’s going on with the weather these days but I sure do know it’s really messed up my fishin’,” he sighs. “Startin’ in October, the kinda fish I look for, white perch, are supposed to be in season,” Tony Joe says. “And while they’re not real big, they’re a real good eatin’ fish. But, y’know, I’ll go out fishin’ to my little spot I have there down by the river and it’ll be a beautiful sunny day and then suddenly the temperature will drop and the rains will come. “So the perch don’t know what to do and I don’t know what to do but walk back home in the rain,” he says. “But maybe that’s why I have written so many songs about rain. Y’know, Rainy Night In Georgia, Out Of The Rain, Rainy Day Lover…” Indeed! Tony Joe’s latest album, his 19th, is titled Rain Crow.

And then Billy Bob asked if he could come by my place and see my studio.

Rapid Eye Movement I would have first come across singer songwriter d Henry Fenton when I had interview him for another music magazine entirely when he release his debut album, Autumn Sweet, back in 2002. I didn’t come across Henry – don’t dare ask what the letter ‘d’ stands for – again until three years later when, out of the blue, I got a phone call from him asking if I was heading along to see R.E.M. play Adelaide Entertainment Centre. “I’m in Adelaide and Mitch has gotten me a couple of tickets,” he said of producer Mitch Easter who helmed Henry’s Autumn Sweet album and had also been involved in R.E.M.’s early work.

Silly me was unable to take up Henry’s kind offer at that time – he later told me he’d also gone out to dinner after the show with the band – but we did get to know each other later when he came to town as part of his day job and was able to stay here at length. So, Henry was generally talking to people about rapid eye movement and generally keeping an eye on things during the day and then doing as many solo gigs as he could at night. So I got know him quite well and some adventures were had.

We were young and carefree in those heady days – and still are to some extent – so it was nothing to pop into Jive before one of Henry’s gigs at another venue entirely to have a couple of shots of Jägermeister – a drink I had first experienced with members of Eric Burdon’s band some years before and had likened it to cough medicine and, as such, avoided it all costs. But, when in Adelaide, you tend to treat visitors to what’s on offer and enjoy it while in their fine company. So, we would have a couple of

shots of said drink before having a few more for the road and then heading off on our merry way. And, we were often quite merry by then. Henry and I have also had some other adventures such

as the afternoon we drove up to Peter Lehmann Wines in the Barossa to attend an A Day On The Green concert in a borrowed car. Once there, we then discovered I had been given VIP passes to the indoor bar area. “Oh, great,” Henry announced while stuffing the car keys into his pocket. “That gives us full license to fully run amok.” We didn’t however as the prospect of driving a borrowed vehicle back to Adelaide at the end of the concert was just too daunting. Last week Hoodoo Gurus and Violent Femmes headlined and throw in some Whitlams, Tim Rogers and Models and there wasn’t a gangbanging delinquent under 25 in sight. When Violent Femmes started their set I had an Annie’s Lane Shiraz in one hand and a roasted potato with extra coleslaw in the other, so let me say I was a near-satiated man. Perhaps The Rolling Stones were wrong and satisfaction is

getting excited, much to the annoyance of security who had a hard time keeping a suddenly happygo-lucky and rodeo yahooing citizenry within the all-

achievable here on this dismal crust of earth.

Blister In The Sun rings out across the hallowed dirt of Annie’s Lane and the crowd erupts into a semi-drunken fit of interpretive dance. Who wants to keep a straight face and speak of terroir now? When the instruments cut out and the audience chimed the lyrics in that warbled drone only a concert audience knows how to achieve it reminded me of the good old hands-up-inthe-air-and-sway-like-youmean-it eighties. A time when Violent Femmes, we were later told by front man Gordon Ganno, did their first show in Australia supporting the Gurus in 1985. At this stage, people were

important white lines demarking aisles of safety and order. I took a sip of my shiraz, noted hints of plum and chocolate and maintained my real estate with near murderous resolve. Before you knew it, Femmes brought out another hit, American Music. The whole crowd was clapping their hands way above their heads, which if nothing else was a fantastic display of group exercise. My soul was soon shuttled smartly to the underworld by Femmes contribution to cult movie The Crow, a brooding and dangerous Color Me Once, a live musical experience that would be hard to forget. Gone Daddy Gone and Add It Up capped it off for any doubters. Just a single stage at A Day On The Green is a great idea. It keeps it smaller and more

manageable for punters unlike bigger festivals, and gives you a chance grab another drink and have a quick piss before the next set. When Hoodoo Gurus took stage, a replenished gathering of thousands simply couldn’t contain their excitement to be in the presence of Aussie putem-on-the-five-dollar-note royalty. Dave Faulkner and bandmates ripped into I Want You Back and Bittersweet, then in true Faulkner style chatted to the sea of faces as if he was merely in a little Sydney pub three decades ago with only their roomies in the audience. Such a nice guy. Why can’t someone like him run the country? A beautiful moment when I saw a man in a wheelchair dancing with his friends, spinning around with abandonment to this good Aussie pub rock. What’s My Scene? and Like Wow – Wipeout completed the circle, and then everyone could stumble back to their poorly erected tents or hopefully correct charter bus with the correct faces of their friends staring back, and not horrified strangers, if they could even make it that far, or if they even cared.

“And we all got into costume for that and also had a cello player and an accordionist,” Brad says. “So we did a run of shows one weekend and it was really successful and heaps of fun to do. So that was Dave Grohl’s old band and now we are doing his current band for the fundraising concert.” Also on the three-way bill at Prospect Town Hall will be Wasting Worlds. “And this will be their debut show,” Brad reveals. “I’ve been teaching and mentoring the lead guitarist for a number of years now. And, while he is still only 17, he shows a lot of promise. So I said that if he were to get a band together, they could have the opening slot at the concert. “And I sat in on a Wasting Worlds rehearsal the other night and it’s all coming together for them really well,” he enthuses. “They sounded fantastic. So, it’ll be good to have a bunch of young kids with a lot of promise playing the opening spot. And they are as fresh as a band can be.” Brad also works closely with Adelaide’s ARMI (Australian Rock & Metal Institute) and that organisation will be providing an all-star band for the occasion. “I’ve known Christian [Broome] and his partner Connie who run ARMI for quite a few years and they have a great teaching facility

where I have also taught on occasion,” he says. “And Christian, being very supportive of mental health issues as are a lot of people, has put together an all-star band featuring many of the students. “So that will showcase what musicians can learn by getting involved with ARMI,” Brad reasons. Brad concludes by saying there are plans afoot to stage more concerts for the foundation in the future. “That’s the aim,” he says. “We plan on doing a couple of major events each year as the foundation is going to be an ongoing thing to continually raise funds to put on the kind of activities we want to present at mental health wards. “And right now we are also in the planning stages for a big quiz night for July,” Brad says. “So that will be something a little different from a concert but will still be a lot of fun.” Club5082 is proud to be supporting The Emma Roscow Foundation with a special mental health benefit concert at Prospect Town Hall, 126 Prospect Rd, Prospect, on Saturday 8 April that will feature White Collar Heroes playing the music of Foo Fighters, ARMI All Stars and Wasting Worlds with $10 tickets at the door. Nick Oliveri is a living legend of the Californian desert rock world. Core contributor to Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss plus numerous other outfits including his own band Mondo Generator, Oliveri will be headlining Holy Land at Producers Hotel with his renowned solo acoustic set. By Ian Messenger When you hear ‘solo acoustic’ don’t expect some picnic rug affair with hampers of pickled cucumbers, aged cheese and hibiscus flowers floating in bottles of chilled rainwater. Instead, be prepared to have your head knocked off your shoulders by a man who sings so loud and with such musical rage that he makes the tatt’d up Benji and Joel Madden look like Jonny Depp’s Pistol and Boo going wee-wee in their little teacups.

“He’s just a great guy, and he’s lent his name and his playing and his help in so many ways for my life it’s not even funny, you know. He really catapulted The Queens to a new level. The record label had even taken us more serious, everyone took us more serious, and Dave gave us that help. I couldn’t say a bad thing about him. He’s a great guy you know, and he’s got his playing to back up how cool he is!” Oliveri remarks. “He plays as good as he is a person.”

“Dude, a world without Motörhead is terrible. A world without AC/DC, The Ramones and Motörhead is like one I don’t wanna be in, you know what I mean. We need these bands to keep us going in rock, flying the flag for good hard rock’n’roll that’s dangerous and sleazy and good… everything’s so safe now, it’s really sad.”

“But I saw this band play, I didn’t know who the hell they were but we didn’t ditch it, we stayed and watched. It was like, ‘Whooooh!’ it was so good. And Scott Reeder ended up being in Kyuss, Alfredo Hernandez ended up being in Kyuss and the first Queens record. It was their first band, I saw this in ninth grade, and it’s really stuck with me… Kyuss ended up covering two Across The River songs I think on Sky Valley. . .

Oliveri coins his solo shows as Death Acoustic in light of other genres such as Death Punk and Death Metal. I asked him about his foray into acoustic with the Demolition Day LP.

I had heard that Oliveri played on stage with Motörhead, which sounds like a marriage made in one of the more finer parts of hell. I asked Oliveri about that tour in Germany back in 2005. “Nobody treated me better than Motörhead in any tour ever. Any band, any opening band or headlining band or any band I’ve ever toured with. They were the coolest, coolest guys of all time. And, you know Lemmy’s a huge influence on my life and he was such a good, good guy. He really was great to me and he knew how much I loved him. . .

“I’ve had that song for a while but never quite knew what to do with it,” Henry says. “It started off as just something Dave [Krusen] and I would jam on and then Mary Beth added the bass. “And then I found out that Mary Beth could speak French,” he laughs. “So I just wrote some random things down and asked Mary Beth to speak them in French. So it’s almost become like another instrument.”

Singer songwriter D Henry Fenton was born in New Zealand but moved to Sydney many years ago where he played in various bands before striking out on his own. By Robert Dunstan Since then he has relocated to Los Angeles where he recorded his latest album, Twice I Fell Down Once, with his band, The Elizabethans. As this country remains his virtual home, however, Henry is back in Australia for a national tour, where he will conclude it by playing in Adelaide. BSide Magazine got on the blower to Henry early one Sunday morning while he was in Sydney, at the ABC studios, waiting to do a radio interview with Simon May.

“Mary Beth I’d met at a party,” he continues. “And, she’d brought a double bass along and I was like, ‘Oh, you play bass?’ And, my bass player had moved back to Ohio so I called Mary Beth and asked if she wanted to play with me. “She’s mainly played in blues bands but has done some country stuff,” he adds. Mary Beth will be making her way to Australia for the first time, although Dave is unable to make it on this occasion.

“Hummingbird is amongst all the other studios in LA and we could look across to Universal Studios from the outside deck,” Henry laughs. “And, all up, we would have spent about four weeks doing it. But we’d do a week and then have time off before going back in.” A number of guests feature on the album including noted Australian guitarist Mark Punch, while percussionist Frank Divanna adds his touch to five songs. “Frank plays bass with Trash Can Sinatras,” Henry says of the on-going Scottish band whose singer, Frank Reader, is the brother of recent visitor Eddi Reader. “Frank’s become a really good mate of mine,” he then continues, ‘So when I was doing the album he said he’d come in and do some percussion. “And it’s funny because Frank got the gig [in 2009] with Trash Can SInatras after they’d been talking to Dave Krusen. They were talking to Dave about bass players and Frank’s name came up.” The Sea Is Me The Sea Is You reminds me a little of

“And he just came back with, ‘Oh, it’s always raining in Portland’, so that’s what we wrote the song about,” he continues. “Apparently, Portland is on the same latitude as London so it rains a lot.” If pressed to describe Twice I Fell Down Once to anyone I would hesitate and then maybe describe it as, ‘Like an Australian version of Tom Petty’. “Ha, I get that a lot,” Henry laughs. “People will say, ‘Oh, you sound a bit like Tom Petty’, but it’s funny because I don’t listen to him all that much. “Tom Petty writes great songs though, so I just take it as a compliment,” he concludes. A giant rhythmic march bleeding vocals of battery acid yet brilliantly underpinned by sagacious intentions. Screen Dreamer is a beautiful song, and perhaps my favourite. It is deeply romantic and shows a breadth of artistry that may inspire those who are bored with the ubiquity of this genre in underground music scenes. I kind of wished the album ended here, and left out a couple of other fillers. A very strong LP though, lots of solid five star tracks.

BURIED FEATHER Mind Of The Swarm (Cobra Snake Necktie Records) Reviewed by Ian Messenger It was about a year ago I managed to see Melbourne’s

Buried Feather play at The Grace Emily Hotel and what a show that was. At first, I thought someone had floated a trip in my drink but no, it was the music. A psychedelic swirl with more colours than a Rainbow Paddle Pop melted into a puddle you can’t stop gazing into, that night I had a childlike high of experiencing something so good for the first time. As an adult new experiences are sadly such a rare thing, all we have are new albums and new babies, and so with more glee than in Glee The Musical 36

I put on my headphones and had a listen to the sophomore LP of these psych rock dreaming bandits Buried Feather with their frightening Orwellian title, Mind Of The Swarm. This album has been released on 180g vinyl by Cobra Snake Necktie Records

and revered German imprint Kozmik Artifactz. I am immediately spaced out while trying to make a cup of tea in my kitchen by this uproar of energy, psychedelic fuzz and almost grunge–like repetitive power grooves as if Kurt Cobain had been born out of Yoko’s womb to be wet-nursed by a lactating Gandhi, oh yeah! In the space before the second track Dust begins I realise I have put two whole teaspoons of sugar into my tea when I normally only just have a few grains sprinkled in. I am disintegrating.
